Awesome place, with an awesome history! The food, oh! So good! The staff was super friendly!

Absolutely a great time. We stopped in for breakfast and had all you can eat French toast, very tasty. The history of this location is impressive, pictures, stories and memorabilia on every wall and in the small lumber museum. Wait staff was very busy, obviously short handed most likely due to post Covid, but took time to visit and even tell us about the establishments history. Can’t wait to come back.

There is a set menu for each night. We were there on brisket night. It was delicious. The bread is amazing. We found out that the following morning was French toast morning using the same amazing bread so we came back for that. It did not disappoint. I highly recommend.

The building had an atmosphere that screamed home. I would definitely recommend this to everyone. The staff was very friendly and even asked if we wanted to taste their fresh baked bread. Must take the bread home, best I've ever had. Afterwards, you can stop at the museum to see the equipment and photos. Would eat here again.

We went to the Samoa Cookhouse for Easter dinner, and we were happy that we did! It was our first sit-down, family-style, dine-in meal since the start of the pandemic. The tables were clean and sanitized. We felt comfortable with the seating arrangements. The food -- of course -- was fantastic. I especially appreciated the soup and the homemade bread with butter before my wonderful Easter dinner featuring ham and a pineapple glaze. (Yum!!!). The service was friendly and upbeat. We could not ask for a better Easter dinner experience. Yes, we are going back to the Samoa Cookhouse for my husband's birthday!

Like coming home. As a past employee of Georgia-Pacific, we used to eat at the cookhouse before it was ever open to the public. That was a long time ago. Our breakfast was wonderful. My granddaughters really enjoyed the family style and said it was like Christmas morning with biscuits and gravy. Having the Maritime Museum next door is fabulous. Can't say enough good about the cookhouse staff. They were fabulous!

Wonderful dinner at a place rich in history. Meals are served family style from a set menu for the day. The meal is all you can eat and they are from scratch recipes as close as possible to historical recipes used at the cook house up to100 years ago. Casual setting with excellent friendly service. We look forward to going again.

Wow, what a unique and tasty experience!! Bottom line: the food was delicious. Simple dishes but with every course (except maybe salad---salad was pretty straightforward) the flavor was out of the ballpark. The restaurant has been operating since the 1800s and apparently they've been perfecting their recipes since then! They have one pre fixe menu every day served family style: soup, salad, fresh baked bread, entree and dessert. They carry on many old traditions from working with some of the same kitchen tools to utilizing yesterday's leftovers in today's soup. These practices really contribute to the overall feeling of care and comfort and home. Not to mention the price was great! Our waitress was lovely and answered all of our (perhaps excessive) questions about the history of the place and how things currently operate. Overall a fantastic experience.

Family tradition. Incredible food. Wish I lived closer so I could have breakfast here more often. The family style serving is a great experience, especially if you are having a large gathering or reunion. Enjoy the flapjacks!

Jeff was our server and so happy he was! Best service we’ve ever had, extremely informative on site seeing and the history of not only the cookhouse itself but the towns history. They were serving biscuits and gravy with pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage links, all very delicious. The restaurant itself is very unique with all the memorabilia we also liked how the menu rotates. Very down home good atmosphere restaurant

Love this place. All of the GREAT food is served family style and the best homemade bread ever. They have a great museum about the logging in that area also. All the employees are so nice and the pricing is not bad compared to what you get.

Best food ever. I love this place. All you can eat all the time...you gotta call in advance to see what's on the menu in case you don't like what they're making. You can't order whatever you want. You get what they cook. But what they cook is amazing....

Read about this place online, couldn’t be happier that we stopped during our trip. The food was all cooked from scratch and tasted amazing! Chicken breasts fried fresh when you order, beautiful mashed potatoes with bacon made from Real Potatoes, homemade cake and bread, and the pork and vegetable soup was out of this world. If you’re looking for real food, this is absolutely the spot to go. No frills, just great food in an interesting communal setting. We talked to Regina, one of the proprietors, and were happy to find out that this is a local owned business run by some beautiful people. Highly recommend it, I’ll gladly stop by anytime and only wish that my hometown had such a treasure. If you have dietary restrictions I’d suggest calling in advance- we didn’t look into this.

Finally got a chance to visit; so many people telling us we need to get here. So great to have a homemade meal in a historic venue. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful. The food was good and well prepared. So enjoyed the museum as well that describes the purpose of the cook house. Looking forward to returning.

I used to eat here as a kid with my family back in the early 90's. It was a special treat to be able to go and eat here. The food was good. I mean home cooked good. Not fancy fine dining with famous chef good. I loved everything about this place. The history as well as the food. Now in 2022 after changes in ownership and all of that, I visited Humboldt county with the mindset of eating at this place once again as an adult, and to show my wife a piece of my own history. Things have changed a bit, but I cannot say my experience was bad. As a matter of fact, my experience was wonderful. The service was on the slower side, but lets be real here. Things are hard in 2022, so people need to relax on the nitpicking of service etc. I promise you if this place had enough help, then you would be complaining that they are too friendly! All in all I enjoyed my time here, and the food was good. The chicken soup was amazing, and the rest was good enough to give a thumbs up. The woman that served us was very friendly and polite. We left here full to the max, (actually a little too full to be honest) and happy. I would recommend this place to anyone that wants a good old fashioned home cooked meal.

EXCELLENT SERVICE AND FOOD! ☆☆☆☆☆ • We were the last customers on a non-busy Thursday (21st) but the service and food was some of the best!! Roast beef, potatoes, green beans, & some amazing bread, I loved the bean soup. Such a staple of my childhood that brought back wonderful memories. • Our server hustled the entire time. Super friendly and great at his job. He was the only server for everyone and no one went lacking. • Great relics, and photos to see. Amazing history. My husband's grandfathers were loggers so this was another flood of memories for us. • We chatted with some great guys at the end of the table, that we'll never forget. (THANK YOU Matt 🌻 We paid it forward later on our trip) • We traveled from eastern Ohio to the west coast and all over mid-America. • • • Highly recommended!

We stopped in looking for something a little different from fast food when we were doing our spring break road trip. I guess my parents had stopped here before when I was much younger but I had no recollection of having been here. I was really surprised and impressed with this place. It seems to have a neat history and all of the food that we had on the day we went was excellent. And it was served quickly and very high quality. I wish I didn't like 12 hours a way. I would seriously make this place a weekly lunch place if I lived close. We had ages 5-79 in our group of 12 and everyone loved it.

Great down home food, super friendly wait staff. Fast service. Wonderful rustic ambiance with a fascinating logging museum attached. Food is served ranch style and if you leave hungry it is your own fault. Meals are served with fresh home made bread, just like my grandma used to make. Delicious!!

It's so good I almost complained about eating too much. The service is so friendly and accommodating, it's more homey than many holiday meals I've attended. Great old-school system for table service, really enjoy how well it works. Great location, interesting antiques. Incredibly friendly folks serving delicious dishes. Can't say enough good about the place.

Absolutely incredible. My boyfriend took me here for our first year anniversary lunch, and I couldn't be happier! Not only does this restaurant have incredible customer service, but the food is out of this world. We went on a BBQ pork day; the meat was so tender, the fat just melts in your mouth. The dessert was also super yummy! I'm so happy our server was so nice to us, even after a small mix up. Thank you for making our anniversary even more special! We will definitely be back.

I wouldn't say all the food is amazing or special, but it's good for all you can eat. The service is great, and they all care for the customers. Shout out to Pam for the great service she's presented since even before I was born. The atmosphere is rustic and very themed around the history of the local logging industry. Overall, it's a great place to go by yourself, take the family, or even a large group of friends for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. -Personal opinion, the pork steaks and meatloaf usually come with gravy on them. I'd recommend you ask for it on the side, especially if you like ketchup on your meatloaf, but at least try it with the gravy first.

What a wonderful experience. We were not expecting the eating style at all but we were so happy and full when we left. They put out their menu weekly and feed just like they did over 100 years ago. 3 meals a day, everyone eats what they're cooking and how much they want! It's cafeteria style but you're served the food. The ladies are wonderful. We never felt forgotten as our waitress was always popping in to refill whatever we need. We went 2 rounds with the french toast and it was absolutely perfect. Once you're done eating, check out the museum and the maritime museum outside to the north.

Passing through or a local, everyone should do the Samoa Cookhouse twice. Once for dinner and once for breakfast. Check in and if they ask you to wait there is not only a huge amount of space in the waiting room but the local logging museum is usually available to stroll through. The dinning experience is family table based; there is a daily menu and that is what everyone is served. They bring dishes filled with different courses to share around the table. Tonight was bread, chili, salad, mac & cheese, peas and corn, and tri-tip beef. Everyone got a slice of brownie with whipped cream for dessert. I can't tell you how much it all cost as it was a gift. There were 6 of us as well. However, upon researching, dinner on Friday is $18.25 for adults and $10.25 for kids. No leftover boxes are allowed. My favorite breakfast is french toast. You should really give it a try.

If you are in the area of Eureka, you have to experience this place. It is one of a kind (literally). There is no menu because you get what they've prepared, period. The food is very good and way more than my wife and I could consume. But perhaps even more than the food is the atmosphere and history of this original cookhouse. I hope you get to meet Regina. I think she may co-own the place. She was the most pleasant hospitable lady you'll ever find. Please stop here for a meal, you will not regret it!

Awesome breakfast. Tasty HUGE French toast, perfectly cooked sausage and a little dry but good scrambled eggs. Large glasses orange juice. Coffee on the table as in a pitcher urn..Glasses of milk. Fun family style meals. Great service by the crew especially Claudia. We loved this historic place.

I'll tell you what! We came in for lunch and they were serving fried chicken. HANDS DOWN best fried chicken I have ever had. The kind of flavor that had me eatin all the little crunchy parts after I was done with the meat. Not to say they didn't give me more food, the server came around and asked if I wanted some more! I was like WHAT? Who does that? Every bit of my meal was made from scratch. From the starter bread, to the mashed potatoes, to the breading on the chicken. Regina told us that it was her grandmothers recipe, and let me tell you you could taste the love! This place was so good we came back 26 hours later for the Prime Rib dinner they were making. The entire meal that went with it had the some love put into it. This place is awesome! We will be coming here again and again....

I have to admit....I had low expectations for this place but it ended up being the best meal we had on our trip. The food was so fresh & flavorful. We enjoyed vegetable soup, homemade bread, salad, chicken parmigiano, peas, roasted potatoes & vanilla cake. You definitely get your money's worth here & you better come hungry! We will certainly be back during our next trip to Eureka.

One of the most unique dining experiences I've had. You sit down and are immediately taken care of by friendly staff. The food practically appears in front of you, and is all absolutely delicious. It's a bit on the pricey side, but definitely worth it for the experience and grub.

Please, don’t turn Samoa Cookhouse into a variant of Cracker Barrel. I lived in Arizona for a long time, where I lived, they have a Cracker Barrel. The first time I went in, there was no comparison or competition. Where Samoa Cookhouse is respecting its roots, living up to its heritage, and respecting the past of hard working men and women, Cracker Barrel is a parody with no standards. Please, don’t destroy and sterilize it.

We would have never found this place except for a recommendation from a friend. We went for dinner on fried chicken night. The menu was beef barley vegetable soup, salad, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, bread, and chocolate cake, and all were good with excellent service in a historic setting.

A
Amber Moran

Really good cookhouse/family service style. I was there for the lunch and the day I went they were serving beef short ribs, garlic mash, green beans, and fresh baked sourdough bread. Everything that hit the table was absolutely delicious! I opted for the salad to start and it was equally amazing. I only thought to take one picture which was from the small museum attached that looks at the logging operations which this cookhouse served originally. The picture is the one of the original switchboards that served the operations office. Sorry for not having a pic of the food but it was so good I totally forgot to take a picture, so that's a good thing.

My sister, my dad and I came in her for a late lunch, early dinner because she recommended this place. It's really cool. It gives a little bit of the history behind this place. We had a really nice waiter. The food was good and very filling. Their bread is amazing. It's all you can eat. They do have a set menu, it's per person but it's family style. It's honestly worth it, especially if you're not a big eater but you can always order more of whatever you want from the set menu

I am just grateful to have had such a wonderful memorable experience. This is a mess hall family style experiancd. Home cooking. The staff were amazing warm-hearted and sincere. The were nice to me and eachother. I had meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and peas with vegetable soup and salad for starter. The food was fresh and made with quality ingredients. My favorite was the vegetable soup.

M

The meal is the meal. Each day they make something for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You go in and get served what they make. They serve as if you're family or at camp. It's brought in abundance and you can eat as much or as little as you wish. Drink is the same. I really didn't expect something that was made in quantity to be of such quality. I had the best french toast of my life today and they make it in mass. The scrambled eggs would have passed Gordon Ramsay's test, light, fluffy, soft, and creamy. As they should be. The sausage is homemade and fantastic. Juicy and plump yet the casing was cooked to perfection and delightfully crisp. If all that wasn't enough, the atmosphere is rustic Lumberjack/Logger and it has a museum attached with antique tools that were used in the trade. The Cookhouse is where loggers and Jacks would come to fill up on calories to get then throughout the day cutting and loading gigantic trees all day building up our great nation. I couldn't help but feel surrounded by history with every bite. The community, the servers, cooks, even the patrons were so kind and such a tight-knit group, it was much more than a meal, more an experience. Thank you for the wonderful beginning to my day exploring the Northern California Coast and Forests.

The last time I ate here was 30+ years ago when I was a kid on vacation. I don't recall how good the food was back then but it is definitely good now. The ambiance is of a time long ago as old as the trees that went through the mill. The lady running the place has the hospitality of an idealistic Mom, welcoming to everybody who visits. The the food reminds me of my grandmas cooking. It's all homemade: bread, green beans, chicken soup, potatoes and the brisket was some of the best I've ever had. Definitely worth a stop if want to take a trip back in time and get some good old fashioned home cooking.

Would have given 5 stars for service but there was a large group of 28 in front of us. Rather than have the large group step aside while their table was setup, and help other guests, the hostess allowed them to congregate and block other patrons for 20 minutes. That aside, excellent family style food. The menu is very simple, whatever the chef decides for day is the meal. Check online to see what's being served when you want to go. This is a historic site as well, the last working lumber camp style Cookhouse. Lots of pictures and antique logging related items all around the establishment.

We were here for a club travel dinner. Regina was the first person we met and we can't say enough about her. She's just awesome. They were very accomodating to our large group. The food was good and every single staff member did a great job bringing the food out and handling beverage orders. They also have a small showroom with interesting logging saws and pictures.

Holy cow this place is good. They sit you quick, they tell you what they are serving that day, you say yes and they bring you your food. A dead simple formula that they nail with Laser precision. Our host/waitresses was amazing and friendly and carried the entire serving area with a smile. Are food was amazing and they had a good (small) selection of local beer. Would go again!

A slice of history that dates back 1893 where lumberers would eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. Same table set up, ambiance, meals everything is preserved just how it was and I thought its pretty cool! Saw this restaurant on our way to Bandon to play golf and looked at their current lunch menu on their facebook page. Food just keep on coming, eat all you can style. Soup or salad, main course of the day and then dessert. Our server is energetic that made the dining experience fun. If you are ever in the area swing by.

Great spot to stop for breakfast with the crew on our last day up North. Eureka is a beautiful town and only made more memorable by by the beautiful people and the relentless cooking of a cook YOU SHOULD TIP 20 BUCKS AT LEAST EVERY TIME YOU VISIT. Delicious food, lovely staff, and theres a museum in the restaurant while you wait. Can't say enough how much you should visit when in the area. Check out 40 oz to Funny Comedy and let us know where to eat when in your town.

An old logger's cookhouse that's been converted into an eatery, features a very limited menu and quick service. The staff here are hard working and very nice, so be sure to have some patience with them. I came in for breakfast and the food was great! If you want seconds or thirds, they are more than happy to accommodate. Be sure to buy a loaf of their bread (made in-house) and check out the museum featuring all sorts of turn-of-the-century artifacts from the building's past.

I’m reviewing their service and the museum inside (NOT THE FOOD) All the meals here have been served more than 105 years. I’m not sure how good the food are but they are very crowded. The little museum inside the cookhouse is so COOL, you will get to see how old days cooking material be like and more… We were running out of time so we can’t eat but I’m sure the food is great and that’s why so many people came here. Also they only serve one dish each meal and it’s different everyday.

I have always loved this eating establishment since the first time I ever found it! Which could be twenty years ago! I know it has been there longer, much longer than that! I hope it stays longer! Everytime I am in the area I try to go! I love bringing new people with me too! Here is why: the staff are quite friendly. The place is full of history. It is clean. Food is delicious! There is no way that you will leave hungry! I am so grateful that I was able to go again! I also bought bread to bring home!

Have been coming here since I was a kid and it has not changed for 20 years, which is a very good thing. Big long tables filled with homestyle food that is replenished every time you finish a plate. The menu is set every day for each meal and you get whatever is prepared for that day...and its always fantastic. The museum is full of historical logging equipment, photos of the area from 100+ years ago, and other interesting antiques. Highly recommend taking a detour out here.

Delicious, hearty, home made food in a rustic, family style setting. We parked our RV here for a few days with Harvest Hosts and explored the area. Good food, friendly staff, clean facility with many interesting artifacts to see. There is no menu to choose from. The food is served "family style" and you eat what they are serving that day. You should not leave hungry as it is basically "eat until you are full". The German Chocolate cake served for dessert was excellent! Very moist and tasty.

Good food. A lot of it. Good service. I have only had the dinner service. I am hoping to do breakfast one day. I most enjoy the night with either pork steaks or southern fried chicken If you want to see the daily menu, go to Facebook. Take the time to tour the museum of logging. There are several dining rooms. Each with differing theme photos. Get some of the history of the building. Very interesting.

The food was good, the wait help friendly and attentive. I know they've gone through changes of owners, but our experience was similar to that of many years ago. The old pictures and memorabilia are worth checking out. The food is all served family style and all you can eat.

Every one in the restaurant that day eats the exact same meal. (It's all you can eat.) Start off with bowls of bread, then soup or salad, then the roast beef, which was what we had for lunch time. Not my type of food, that type of food is basic and not something I'd choose. Despite that, it was good food and I liked the way everyone was seated. The waitress was great and afterwards you can take a tour in the back to see all the cool old stuff. I'd recommend calling or looking online to see what they're cooking on that day at the specific time you want to go, so that you know what you'll be eating. Great place, (all you can eat.) :)

Cool lil place. Different style of serving. They bring it out to you only one meal is served. We had pot roast, rice with gravy, peas, and soup or salad. You get to pick between soup or salad but that is the only choice you make. So if you have picky eaters this is not the place. They don't bring a lot out at a time and get in no hurry to bring more. But you can eat till you can't eat any more. The food was good tho! The ranch dressing was amazing. Lots of cool stuff in the side room!

Solid place for a meal. Definitely a unique experience and typically better with a larger group as they serve family style.

Continuously serving hungry lumberjacks and visits since at least 1902 this historic eatery is just great!! It's family style dining, with the breakfast, all you can eat by the way, is brought out to everyone until you can't eat any more. The wait staff are exceptionally courteous despite facing the same issues that all dinners gave these days ... not enough staff for the demand. Still, they deliver with a smile. If your traveling along the NorCal coat around Eureka this is a must stop diner. My picture of an empty plate is just cuz I just tore through eggs, sausage, pancakes, biscuits and gravy.

Great ambiance, feel of history… amazing staff , that’s the first impression.. the food was tasty as of home , nothing more nothing less , nothing fancy whatsoever. We went for a late breakfast, it was almost lunch time , but the kind lady chef prepared breakfast for us . Their biscuits and gravy is a must try . The scrambled egg was heavenly, sausages were perfect cooked , toasts were delicious. Buy their homemade bread . The staff who served us was so amazing and friendly. We felt like home ( we were the only customers at that time ) so they were able to take care of us . Please be ready to wait to get food , as it’s made fresh ..

If you have not been there, GO! Great food and lots of it. Family style dinners are amazing! First time I was there was about 35 years ago and I remember it well. So much fun with a group of people or just a few. It's about $15-$20 a person as I recall, but it's really good. I love looking at all the old pictures and stuff in their mini museum too! Check out my pictures! Can I get a thumbs up ? ! :)

It is not the same as 20 years ago. Everyone was seated distance from each group. The last time we visited it was breakfast. This visit was dinner which started at 5 pm. It was fried chicken but the meat did not have much flavor. Most of the flavor was on the batter. Bread and soup was good but the salad was just plain. $17.95 for dinner. It is all you can eat but we did not ask for more than they brought to our table except for a couple more bread.

We stopped here because of the great reviews but we're unpleasantly surprised: with it being our first time we didn't know what to expect but we're met with a nice hostess who sat us, the server didn't really go into detail about the place or the process but we got the jist from another servers speech to some other nearby first time guests. There was a negative situation with the table right next to us, which was a little off putting, food was just okay - food and experience was not worth the price for us.

Located in a beautiful scenic spot. Museum and tribute photos are great! Food was average. Pretty sure they are experiencing the staffing shortage as wait times and frazzled workers were evident. Bathroom wasn't very clean and needs some updates. Overall I'm glad to say I've been but probably won't go back.

It took a while for us to get our food, the sausage was amazing. The other food we received was mediocre, the place definitely needs more servers. I felt so bad for the 2 girls having to serve. We came here because the place was so highly veiwed, I was very disappointed. The servers were very nice but the food was horrible minus the sausages. There was four of us eating out, they forgot to bring 4 French toast so we had to wait 20 minutes to get a single french toast for the other person.

We used to love this restaurant. Something has changed and not for the better. The eggs taste like powdered eggs, the French toast tastes stale & was cold. The sausage was good though. Staff are great & the atmosphere is historically very cool.

M
Melissa Scott

Long wait, and once seated the waitress didn't give us a chance to order drinks or any other food besides what was being served for the day. The french toast was great. That was about the only thing good there, oh and the items they had in the little museum were interesting.

Went with my family when we got there we’re plenty of open tables. I understand with Covid they’re not sitting people next to each other, but we were told there would be a five minute wait. We sat and sat. Large groups we’re seated right away. I mentioned to this to the hostess and told her I had a class. We decided to leave at exactly 6:15 which meant we’d been waiting for 30 minutes (during this whole time there were plenty of empty table)! At exactly 6:15 the hostess set us down. Honestly I wish we had just left because after sitting down we waited and waited again for the food. My children said the brisket was “inedible.” Because of my class we had to leave (I was still 20 minutes late) and we ended up leaving there hungry. I sent a message and never got a response after about a week they got back to me and said they would “investigate,” but I never heard back from them after that. Very disappointing- the whole experience from the food to how they handle this issue. Never been to an “all you can eat” and left hungry. And the charm of the long tables and Family style dining is also gone.

What a let down. This place should not be advertised as "all you can eat." and should not charge such high prices if they are going to be out if everything and guilt trip us for asking for more food. We know several people that rave about this place so we were optimistic going in but it quickly went south. We went on Southern Fried Chicken night. We arrived and had over an hour wait despite there were several open tables so we were never seated until close to 8pm. Immediately after seating, we were given the disclosure that there wasn't much bread left available (we each got one piece). It took a VERY long time to receive drinks, salad and soup which was frustrating considering how long we had already been waiting. The server did not come back for a very long time and THEN said she would put in our order for dinner. It seemed like she was intentionally stretching it out hoping we would fill up on soup salad and drinks. Several of our people did not eat soup or salad and were waiting for the dinner meal the entire time, which we had already told the server. Once we finally got dinner, the server never came back. We were served such small portions that we each had only a tiny dollop of potatoes and one piece of chicken. We had to get up and find out server to ask for more. It took 30 minutes or more to get more chicken because They had run out of mashed potatoes and were trying to make macaroni and cheese and had stopped making chicken. Finally, after waiting a VERY long time, we were brought one more piece of chicken each and a bowl of undercooked Mac and powdery cheese - it was absolutely terrible. Then the server brought a huge plate full of chicken to the table next to us and bragged that the cook told her to bring them "all the chicken that was left." The experience overall was terrible and extremely overpriced for what food we actually got and the service we received. We will NOT be back.
