For a cafeteria style Chinese restaurant it is so good and you get good sized portions. Their garlic wings are to die for! I've always been happy with my choices there. They also sell fortune and almond cookies as well as chili sauce. Good prices too.

This is freshly prepared food that is ready to go. Their chicken wings are some of the best that I have ever had . Get the 3 item combo, it is enough food for 2 people and it comes with a drink.

I've come here since they opened around twenty years ago, run by a mom and dad with sons and presumably an aunt and hired help. Dad(?) still works in back cooking. Extremely cheap style Chinese type fast food, used to be even cheaper at $.99 an item but I feel quantity and quality has gone up with price. Noodles are really popular with kids and I base this on me taking them to my kid's school for ethnic day where they were the most popular item, looks like they're deep fried french fries like for a few seconds to make the spaghetti tasty, never seen it done like that. Chicken, beef, and pork are all good and won't make for restroom stops like Rice King might. I like pretty much everything here! So why only four stars? The conversation right in front of me, in English, between mom and aunt(?) about how much to charge me for four kabobs. Two for such and such a price or four at one price each, well why the hell would you charge me for four singles when two doubles are cheaper, paid for four singles but took notice. The grown son is very cool and would never do this but he wasn't on register that day, haven't seen the other son in years so maybe he took off for college or something. We are fortunate to still have this restaurant in Clairemont after all these years and it seems popular. Edit: I updated one star because I didn't want to drag the rating down but I'm still not real happy over that lost dollar.

Great price, good food, broad selection for a cafeteria style restaurant. Rock solid, family owned business where at least one of the sons is always working the front, and due to the high volume of traffic the food turnover is frequent so it never has a chance to dry out or get blech! Quality is very high, especially for a restaurant of this type, price range, and style.

There was a long line of of the door, and I found out why. Not only was service exceptional but friendly and fast. All the food is on display, buffett style and you choose each item for just a few dollars each. To my great surprise nothing was served from those steam tables but made fresh upon orders. Great experience

The orange chicken WAS SO GOOD. the fried rice was amazing and it's the perfect place if you want peace and quiet, while also getting great food! It was really sad when I found out some fried lumpia was out but it was overall great! Totally recommend for some lunch or dinner!

Best food for the price anywhere! You can get a whole dinner for 4 for $40. And get the extra family size shrimp with it. It's so good! Family run. Closed on Sunday.

Great place to get a quick takeout order of Chinese Food. If you get there early enough there is always a good selection. They even have some "cooked to order" items not on the menu. Just ask for it and it will be prepared fresh while you wait. Family business so Mother is taking orders along with her son and Uncle is in the kitchen in the back. Good food!!

We have been looking for just a good traditional Chinese food take out place. So many places on Convoy St are fusion or just try too hard. We ordered from Fortune Cookie Express tonight for takeout. We ordered the vegetable lo mein, BBQ pork fried rice, orange chicken, cream cheese wonton, and hot and sour soup. We just finished our meal and this is exactly the Chinese comfort food we've been searching for. We tried PF Changs a few nights ago (don't judge) and Fortune Cookie Express is hands down way better. This is our new neighborhood Chinese takeout favorite.

Customer service is excellent. This small family-owned business is the place to go if you want Chinese fast food at a reasonable price. The food is amazing, and I refuse to go anywhere else when I want to eat Chinese cusine.

Best Chinese food in the area in my opinion always get combo #5 bbq pork fried rice very good but it does take a bit to make i recommend add a few spoon fulls of bbq sauce when it's done gives it that extra savory taste that u didn't know u wanted

I really like this place I have been going there for over 20 years. Still a really good value. Love the Orange Chicken, fried rice and lo mein.

Purchased the party tray and was not disappointed. Plenty of food to feed an army! Will be coming back.

Wow, finallly had dinner here. Their sweet teriyaki chicken is so cravable. Usually when I get teriyaki chicken from a buffet style food place, it is bordering on Sahara desert dry but this was so plump and juicy and flavorful. Plus it had just the right amount of sweet teriyaki. Not overbearing, just enough to get a hint of sweetness but allow for the chicken to still shine through. PERFECT!! Definitely coming back here again and again and again...... you get the idea.

Amazing food that consistently tastes amazing. This restaurant has changed names and owners a few times in the past 8 yrs that I have been coming here but without fail the selection, service, quality, and most importantly the price have been primo. This place is a hidden gem that my family stumbled upon one night cause it was close to our house at the time. We still go out of our way (minimum 15 miles) to come here and we swear by it

Love the wings and pepper steak. Delicious. Shop locally owned!

As a first time customer, we got the family meal and received huge portions of a variety of dishes leaving us with plenty of leftovers - great value! Very fast and friendly service on top of the delicious food. Workers were wearing masks and there was sufficient plexiglass to separate them from customers. Easy to get in and out of the restaurant and shopping center.

This place is really good, they have a selection of Chinese restaurant staples available in one two or three(I think) entree plates with fried rice or low mein, as well as made to order food if you want. The fried chicken wings are very tasty as well, pretty much my families favorite wings in SD. I def recommend this place.

As a first time customer, everything is beyond my expectation and way better than Panda Express. Their orange chicken and Thai curry chicken are my favorite. So delicious! I will definitely come back more often!

This will be a new Go-To! It is a buffet, so there is a chance they will be low on your favorite item, but I found they were consistently restocking with fresh food. The employees worked quickly but were willing to answer all my questions. I am so pleased!

Why would anyone in their right mind spend money at Panda Express with this place so close by off Balboa? Please, why?! Huge portions. Super friendly service. Great options. Might not be the most fresh Chinese food, you should already know that. FCE is a must-visit for those looking for affordable Chinese fast food to take out.

We've been buying from them since 1995, When they were called The Great Wall, for 99 cents per item. All the food is always great -- especially the fried chicken wings.

Good food and value. There was a bit of a wait and only take out due to covid right now but was worth it. I had the orange chicken with half and half rice and low main.

I always love to eat here! The food is very Americanized Chinese but nevertheless, it is very good and the portions are really good for the price. I usually get either the orange chicken or the bbq pork. You also need to get a side order of the ginger chicken wings. They’re the best!

T
Tanuki Parade

Standard "chinese food" fare, BUT prices are still acceptable, portions are large (one 2-item lasts me at least 2 meals), flavor is good, and the Hot-and-Sour soup is worthy of epic poetry and song. Seriously, I wake up thinking about the soup some days.

T

Food is always great. Good variety. Love their Kung Pao Chicken! Only place in San Diego I’ve found that actually makes it authentic by using Sichuan peppercorn oil. Mouth-numbing deliciousness.

T

Great food. Great service. They don't mess around. The containers barely close because they're so full. People seem to forget how to drive in the parking lot, so be careful. It's next to a chic fil a, so there are a lot of oversized emotional support vehicles.

This is a family owned restaurant that provides excellent customer service. I have eaten the food from Fortune Cookie Express for over 20 years and the flavor and quality of the food has not changed. They have the best Orange Chicken; no other restaurant in San Diego comes close to it. My favorite items are the Garlic Chicken Wings (always crisp) and the Thai Curry Chicken Breast with the sauce poured over white rice. My recommendation is to try the "cook to order" items which can be made hot and spicy upon request. Also, if you're a soup person the Chow Ma Soup hot and spicy is delicious. It is my go to item when I'm a bit under the weather. This restaurant has catered events for me and everyone always loves it and goes in for second and sometimes 3rd servings. This is an eatery I suggest you try.

Their Chow Mein is better than other chow Meins I have had from other Chinese fast food restaurants. Their chicken is tender and fresh. Service is quick and lady server/ cashier is polite. Tables and floor are clean. They give good portions of food too. I definitely recommend this place!

My husband was craving “Chinese Food”; and, I honored his request with three “3 Item Combos” and a dozen “Salt Pepper Wings”. We haven’t been here for years and was pleased with the service and delicious food. He loved the “Broccoli Beef” and wings. I loved the “Orange Chicken”, “Lo Mein” and rice. Thank you so much ☺️

I always call this the 99 cent Chinese food. That is how it started. But it is now 8 bucks for a 2 item combo with drink. It was good. I love the orange chicken and the noodles and rice were also decent. For a quick lunch of Chinese food this ain't bad.

Very good fast food Chinese location. Etter than Panda or any competitor. Quick easy and friendly service. Had pork, broccoli beef and orange chicken. Definitely better than your average express food location.

After our shopping trip we decided to get something to eat rather than cooking. Combo items ready pick are all meat. The only vegetarian item was tofu w/ vegetables (a la carte) and it took only few minutes to cook. The veggies were cooked to perfection, they melt in your mouth. White sauce was just enough, and it seasons the food enough (not too salty). The only thing was a piece of hair in the food. Maybe people in the kitchen should wear hair caps. The food was enough for family of 3.

Good portion sizes. Really good food, very flavorful - I had the chow mein, orange chix and pepper beef (and fountain Pepsi)

If you are served with a beautiful lady that has her hair set up, then you are in the right time and wont upset. Never order with the other lady, she does not know how to treat customer. I used to order white curry chicken, kabob and chicken wings. Price is good. Food is tasty. Parking is easy.

Food was edible, nothing to get excited about. Fried rice was....odd flavor. Service was fast, but it is buffet style, so....it should be. Portions were large, price....depends on what one us after to consider price. Cream cheese won tons were probably good when hot, warm when I got them, cold by the time I ate the third one.

Girl working the counter had the personality of the bottom of my shoe. Food was eh. Water wasn't cold. There are much better places to eat. Even the fortune inside the cookie was bad.

This is probably my worst experience ever at a Chinese Food Restaurant. First off the older lady that took my order wasn't wearing any gloves or a hair net or hat. While she was making my plate she grabbed the phone out of her apron and answered the phone then she went right back to making my plate. When she was finished making my plate she rung me up taking my cash. Then she went directly to another customer to make there plate NEVER washing her hands. 🤮 I just wonder how long she has been doing that without washing her hands. I stayed for 30 minutes and not 1 time did she stop to wash her hands after touching the register and money! 🤢

For the past 3 weeks I have been around 11-11:15 AM on a Saturday and for all 3 times In a row they are either closed or they are open but don't have any food ready. There is no reason to advertise you are open at 11 if you don't have any food ready till 12? You don't see any other place open but not have their food ready. Do the cooks not come in before everyone to make sure all the food is cooked and ready to be opened. 3 strikes and I'm out I have been coming here for 10 years. But not anywhere

Everything was really inedible. Lo Mein, Broccoli beef (I think), hot and sour soup (yuck), fried wonton (tasted 2 week old), fried rice. Returned the order, expressed our dissatisfaction and the woman in the back came running out....."you go now "... Not even the gesture to remake, discount later and most importantly not even an apology. WORST WORST WORST WORST. $22.75 literally down the toilet.

March 19, 22 we ate here as we've been for maybe the past ten years. However the food prices went up like not worth it. The portions are barely half of what they was. 2 Items and a drink $18.60. No wonder the place was empty at dinner. Use to be so Good here. Better off going to a Chinese restaurant. Never again. Go find out for yourself.

Came at 3pm and the food was so dry and stale..my kids said it wasn’t even “mid” they said they don’t want to eat from there ever again. So I had to try their food and it was so gross. Tossed the food. Took the loss and ordered something else from another Chinese food restaurant.

J
Julia Najera

A friend of mine got chicken wings from here and they were really good, so I gave the place a shot for dinner twice. The first time was disappointing, but I gave it a second chance - because every restaurant can have a bad night. But, boy do I regret it. The food itself does not look appetizing at all, breaded chicken used in dishes looks like tumors and the broccoli turns brown from being over cooked. Not even the fried rice is tasty, seems like a simple dish to not get right. Not to mention, my son ended up vomiting the night after we had dinner there. I'm sorry, this place is just not good at all.
