Real Pit Bar-B-Cue Sonoma County Reviews
The Butcherman BBQ is an absolute gem in downtown Sonoma. It’s a bit of a "speakeasy" vibe for food, you have to enter through the Sonoma Cheese Factory to find it. Their sandwiches are incredible and well worth the drive from anywhere in the Bay Area. I’m a huge fan of the Tri-Tip; it’s tender, smoky, and perfectly seasoned.
Another trip here and not disappointed at all. We would highly recommend that if you have 2 or more people to split the sandwiches and share. You will be so happy to get the best of more than just one sandwich melting in your mouth. We got this time the brisket, the BLT, and the Turkey sandwich. All were superb in flavor, freshness, presentation, all the above. They also have a wide range of specialty drinks, so don't miss out and grab one to go along with your meal. We just love stopping here every time we are in the area. Park at the town park and eat, then stroll the shops around the park. It's so lovely, and there is history right there, too. We also bring and ice chest because they have some really good cheeses in the same place to buy. So don't miss out and stop in, you won't be disappointed. Next time we are getting the ribs.... 😉
Found my new spot in town. The Butcherman Brisket Burrito is quite possibly the most delicious thing I have ever eaten. Looking forward to my next meal here
The store located across the town park. There are few dining tables on the vibrant patio for enjoying the local street scene. I really like their homemade ice cream and salads. The salads mixed with a variety of cheeses taste special.
BBQ in a Cheese Shop—A Must-Try in Sonoma! Follow the irresistible aroma and the sandwich board out front, and you’ll find this hidden gem. 🍖🧀 Order at the counter, and while you’re at it, grab a beer. 🍺 The ordering process can feel a bit disorganized, and it’s not entirely clear how or when your order will arrive, but trust me, it’s worth the confusion. They’ve got the meats! 🥩 These sandwiches are piled high with tender, flavorful barbecue, living up to the sign’s claim of being the best BBQ in Sonoma. The food is served takeout-style, so after picking up our order, we grabbed a table out front to enjoy it. They also offer restrooms, which are a nice bonus after a day of travel. If you’re strolling around the square, make sure to pop in for a sandwich. You won’t regret it! 🥪🔥
I'm not sure if this is a hidden gem in Sonoma but we were walking by the Sonoma Cheese Factory and there was an amazing smell coming from the grill and smoker so we asked where it was coming from and there is a fantastic small place deep inside the Cheese Factory. It wasn't busy but the food here is fantastic, the chicken and brisket was delicious.. This was our first time in Sonoma, but this seems Totally like a hidden gem.
During a recent 5k race in Sonoma, the air was filled with the irresistible scent of smoked BBQ. Intrigued and hungry, we had to locate the source, and it led us straight to The Butcherman! Finding a spot with truly delicious smoked meat can be challenging, but this place stands out as the best BBQ I've ever had. I ordered the Tri-Tip sandwich, and it was a game-changer. The portion was generous, easily big enough to share with a second person. The meat was tender, juicy, and perfectly smoked, making every bite a delight. The sandwich was so flavorful and satisfying, it left a lasting impression. Their sides are also in shareable serving size bowls, and we couldn't resist trying the Mac and Cheese and Potato Salad. Let me tell you, WOW! The Mac and Cheese was creamy, cheesy, and simply divine. The Potato Salad was equally impressive, with a perfect balance of flavors and textures that made it a standout. Beyond the amazing food, the staff at The Butcherman were fantastic. They were friendly, welcoming, and exuded an energy that showed they truly love their jobs. Their enthusiasm added to the overall experience, making our visit even more enjoyable. Shout out to the lady at the register who ID’ed me, she was a huge part of this enjoyable experience.
Great counter service BBQ spot in downtown Sonoma. What could be better than a BBQ joint that operates inside a cheese shop? The Mac n cheese from the BBQ joint inside the cheese shop! The brisket sandwich and smoked turkey sandwich also perfectly hit the spot. Really good beer on tap too. The outdoor dog-friendly patio tables to the side of the building can get crowded during peak lunch times on weekends, but when we went for a late lunch before they closed, there were plenty of tables. Definitely worth coming back to again and again whenever we're up in Sonoma.
Wow. Best food we ate in all of Sonoma. We stopped into the cheese store just to take a quick look before we went on our tastings and the gentleman behind the counter gave us a sample of the freshly smoked, pulled pork. They had just taken out of the smoker. It was by far the best piece of meat I've ever had! we came back the next day for lunch and we were all blown away. The high-quality ingredients truly reflect in every bite. Their sandwiches were perfect. So much flavor, but not so many dressings or toppings, everything was perfectly balanced and so tasty. We would come back to Sonoma just to have these again, and we kept talking about it for the rest of our trip!
Everything we had here was great. The staff is amazing, layed back and down. The pork belly is sinfully good. I had a ham and cheese sandwich and arugula salad. And I forgot the name of beer, but it was a pilsner 10/10.
Wow, this was so good! The meat, the dinner rolls, the coleslaw, and the potato salad—it was all perfect. The smoky, rich flavor from the wood fire really stood out, and the sauce was so well-balanced. But those dinner rolls—how are they THAT good? Even the coleslaw had such a perfect balance with the sauce. The ribs had a nice chew to them, which added to the experience. Next time, I’ve got to try the butcher’s platter so I can taste everything!
The Butcherman BBQ Restaurant was my target, and I only had an hour to get there, snag a big fat order of those world famous beans and be back to Napa, where I plan on taking credit for making the beans! My pal Oolaba Bokkoombaba from Swaziland is participating in the Incwala Ceremony on Sacramento, and just had to visit Napa, and for some reason the people of his region think Napa is world famous for beans! I didn't tell him it was the Butcherman BBQ Restaurant that deserves the high accolades! 5 stars all day long ☆☆☆☆☆
Me and my husband have visited this amazing place today. We just couldn’t resist wonderful smoked smell so decided to check it out. OMG our brisket and mushroom burger were soooo delicious. It was the best brisket I have ever had! And I used to live in Texas so I know what I am talking about :) The staff is beyond amazing! The service was better than in some 5* fancy restaurants Very nice people are working there. Definitely will visit again when in Sonoma. Please, open a location in Los Angeles! All the best to you guys!
Honestly best brisket and best pulled pork sandwiches we’ve had in a long time - maybe ever! Pictures don’t do it justice if you stop in Sonoma you have to try the butcherman’s bbq. We ordered the pork to take away as we were on a ticket schedule but came back to order the beef brisket because it was that good!
Amazing brisket sandwich. The meat was nicely smoked, rich, and melt in your mouth. It was more meat than sandwich really. Huge! The bun was tiny in comparison.
Who would have expected to find some of the best brisket I've ever tasted, in a small butcher shop, inside a cheese shop, in Sonoma California? And I'm from Texas! The seasoning and smoking were amazing. And its taste was only surpassed by the outstanding customer service from the staff. If you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. You'll thank me later
Great spot to stop for lunch! Tri Tip Sandwich - 5/5 (amazing)

The website photos of the food set a very different expectation than what the experience was, BUT it was still a good experience and delicious.
So glad someone recommended this gem. Perfect place to stop for a bite while in Sonoma. Hidden inside a cheese company, it has a solid selection of delicious sandwiches. My one complaint is the seating area was a bit dirty, but it’s a grab your friends, grab a table, grab a sandwich kind of place. Did not take long at all to get our food, so a good stop if you have limited time.

A little BBQ joint at the back of the Cheese Shop. We got a brisket burrito and BBQ plate. Everything was juicy and flavorful; surprisingly for such a small shop in Napa. The most unique thing we tried was the smoked meatloaf. Would definitely return next time we are in town for lunch.

We came here based on the reviews, and I’m sorry to say that it did not live up to our expectations. We had the brisket sandwich, which was pretty good, although it was not very hot… But none of the other food was either, much to our disappointment. The most disappointing was the tri-tip sandwich. It was like chewing on a piece of leather and it was so tough. Beans were OK but cool. Coleslaw was bland as bland can be which was very surprising. Overall, I’m sad to say I was really looking forward to this, but not a fan.
I don’t really understand why this place has such a high rating and good reviews. I can assure these are the worst ribs I ever had. Tough, cold and flavorless. I wish I had picked another place on my short trip to Sonoma.
