Sutton's is a Chapel Hill institution loved for its nostalgic atmosphere, friendly staff (especially Don and Mimi), and classic diner fare. Popular for burgers and sandwiches. Some find the breakfast and sides underwhelming, but the overall experience is highly rated.
Tip: A must-visit in Chapel Hill for the nostalgic atmosphere and friendly service. Be prepared for a wait, but the line moves quickly.

Love! Love! Love! Sutton's is classic Chapel Hill! No matter how long between visits, they always remember me and welcome me with my favorite: an old school (read syrup) classic Cherry Coke! Many great memories!
Had a great sandwich there!
Great food and prices and the staff was really friendly, will be back! 😊
Small town Americana at its best. Good food, fine service, interactive friendly staff, and a warm environment. Fair price point and served HOT. Really enjoyed their coffee.
It's our every Sunday morning after church comfort food Kind of place. More importantly, it's the comfort of being in a restaurant With great service and "team Sutton's" staff that gives it that down home North Carolina feeling.
One of my favorite restaurants of all time. Great food, friendly people, and very reasonable prices all of which bring me back several times per week. Highly recommend!!
This may be the BEST burger I've ever had. Clean, modest, "hometown" establishment, very friendly people. LOVED my first experience at Sutton's. Will definitely be back!
Don't let the name confuse you; this place is not a drug store but is instead good eats. The restaurant took over an old drug store (hence the name) and has a college town vibe mixed with wholesome country diner. The menu also reminds me of your classic diner with a focus on sandwiches and everything I've ordered (been here half a dozen times?) has been on point and very reasonable in price. The staff get to you quickly and are always polite. Definitely worth the 20%+ tip. I'll continue to frequent this place. Also, try the Ruben!
Place is good. It's got an old time parlor feel to it. The wait staff is attentive and the service is quick, even with a crowd. Food is pretty good too. Portions are proportional to the prices. Feels like part of the fabric of Chapel Hill. Check it out.
Never been here before but heard all about it. This place is cool! Such history and heritage with the UNC campus being there, the players that come in, pictures all over the walls. The service was prompt and polite. I ordered the Lone Star hotdog. It was every bit of a 1/4lb hotdog. The chili was good and made it complete. Sutton's may be old but it was clean! A health score of 99! Their burgers are big and messy! You know it's a good burger when half of it falls into your plate while eating it! I will be returning to this place again!
Stopped here on a friend's recommendation Anna we're so glad we did. We had already eaten lunch so we just grabbed an ice cream. It was very tasty. Bob at the register was great. We enjoyed our time there and will definitely be back.
Perhaps the best burger for best price anywhere on Earth. The All the way burger floors me every time. Only pitfall is that its so big you have to almost unhinge your jaw. Figure in they are smart enough to go with crinkle cut style fries and this is a cant miss.
The most charming spot in Chapel Hill. Servers are always so friendly, menu has a lot to choose from and the food is so great and very affordable. Their cherry limeade and their sweet tea are also perfect!! A must stop anytime you’re on Franklin Street.
Giving Sutton’s a five star rating based on their kindness and community involvement. My daughter was out running during the recent lockdown on campus. She ran there and let them know why she was there. They let her and others stay past closing until the lockdown was lifted. They offered her food and drink, put on the news and kept calm during the incident. This wasn’t an experience anyone should go through but they were kind and generous throughout. I’m very thankful and will stop in to personally thank them the next time I’m in the area.
A Chapel Hill classic! I love the hamburgers, and the prices are very reasonable. Check out pictures of Carolina students, faculty, and athletes that have dined here while you enjoy delicious food. This place is a living piece of Chapel Hill history!
I often think about this place when I am away from home or right when I miss them being open. From the nostalgia of the pictures and the food you cant go wrong. I usually dont have to even glance at the menu. Getting the cherry smash as my drink. For the table some chili fries. Then for my entree it's a toss up between a couple of chili dogs or a double bacon cheese burger. You cant really go wrong with anything that comes out of the kitchen
Sutton's is very special. The staff are friendly, the food is simply and delicious and their location on Franklin Street is perfect. We have enjoyed a number of visits and our kids are thrilled to find coaches and athletes dining-in. The photos on the walls are an enjoyable glimpse into the past and the candy is a great take-home treat. The local toffee/brittle is excellent.
Sutton’s is home. Great food, better prices and amazing service. Nice atmosphere, great pictures and neat finds (old candy from your mothers childhood that she never imagined tasting again, can be found here), service is amazing! 10/10 recommend!
Timeless classic, great burgers
If you are in Chapel Hill, a visit to Sutton's is a must. Their burgers are the best in town. The potato munchers are my favorite item. If you feel like being "healthy", they also have great salads and wraps. The service is fast and the staff is helpful and friendly. No visit to Chapel Hill is complete without a meal from Sutton's.
Great food, good prices, and very friendly staff. Suttons has a relaxed atmosphere and was nice to just chill out at. I had a double cheeseburger and a Butterfingers milkshake- both were delicious!
This place is THE SPOT in Chapel Hill. My first meal in town was here, when I was a wee little hopeful high schooler visiting UNC. And I miss those burgers and potato munchers even today. Definitely pay this staple a good long visit.
My Favorite food spot at Franklin st! And they do really have a pharmacy behind the dining space with so many old memories. Highly recommend Turkey on focaccia! Don’t miss it!
I really enjoyed the breakfast at Sutton's. Simple, but done well. The pancakes are excellent and the bacon and eggs were as expected. The prices are reasonable as well.
Old timey Drug Store - just feels good in this place! Lunch is like your mom would serve on a summer day.
yummy sandiwch wpastrami avery yummy sandwich was very tasty
Great food, great environment, great price. Small to medium portions but just enough. I recommend the turkey bacon deli sandwich w/ sweet potato fries! Solid lunch!!
Great place to eat and enjoy the college town atmosphere. Very cool jerseys and pictures on display.
The best place to eat & socialize in Chapel Hill for breakfast/brunch/lunch. The food (our regulars:hotdogs, burgers, fries, grits, French Toast & filled breakfast sandwiches & if you are hungry, do not miss the Mandarin Salad!) is always good and the kitchen gets food out in a timely manner. Holly & the rest of the wait staff are great. If there is a line of folks waiting to get in, Joe keeps it moving and is always accommodating no matter the number in your party and if there is a wheelchair in your party, it is an easy roll in/eat/roll out. The new guy at the register is catching on quickly and is now comfortable enough to let his personality through which is good. Don runs a great hometown/college town place and everyone is made to feel at home. They now close at 2:30 due to staffing shortages (that affect most eateries). We haven't been to the other two locations, but hope to sometime.
Solid food at excellent prices & very friendly staff. Interior is unique and makes a nice experience
Neat little place. Service was outstanding. We had a cheeseburger and a club sandwich with fries. Both were excellent. Also, for a place in North Carolina the sweet tea was on point! Would highly recommend stopping in for lunch!
This is a landmark and historic restaurant in chapel Hill. It's like stepping back in time to the diners of the 1960s. The folks here are fabulous. I really enjoyed the pancakes, sausage and grits. The egg breakfast was also very good. Highly recommend a visit here
Absolute legend on Franklin Street. Great food and drink. Chicago dog and cherry limeade have been my go-to since my freshman year like 15 years ago and it's always perfect. Great burgers and stuff too.
Lots of history, many Tar Heels shirts and awesome food in just one place. I had the chicken breast sandwich and it was delicious... Don't forget to try the sweet potato french fries! Prices were pretty good.
Just what I was looking for in a Southern college town. The crowd showed I wasn't alone. Reasonable prices for good portions. The beef Lone Star hot dog was quality with generous amounts of bacon, not just a single strip like I expected. The kitchen staff are a show in themselves with how quickly they fly at lunch time.
We always love a trip to Sutton's. Great diner food and friendly service. Sometimes there's a bit of a line to get seated, but we always find it worth it. Make sure to save room for a milkshake!!
The food here is always really good. Personally I like the pancakes for breakfast and burger for lunch but I'm sure everything is good. The bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich is also really good, I got it in a wrap and it was incredible.
This is such a cool place. It's got an old-fashioned drug store and lunch counter vibe because it's authentic, having been a cornerstone of Franklin St. for90+ years. Their fries are nothing special but the burgers are amazing - I had a 2/3 lb double cheeseburger with chili, onions, and mustard. It was good for my soul. You'll love the collection of UNC memorabilia, and the staff is absolutely delightful and kids will love the selection of candy.
One of the few Chapel Hill restaurants remaining from my undergraduate days at UNC. Great food and memories. I miss the Rams head Rathskeller, Ye Olde Waffle Shoppe, Hector's, Swensen's, and Mama Dip's.
Such an iconic location. Hot Dog special on Tuesday and Thursday was a real good tradition we had. If you order a Cherry Smash by miming the People's Elbow, they will recognize you years later and do it with you every time you walk in, even if it's been years. We're lucky to have this establishment in Chapel Hill. Should be a protected monument honestly. If I ever ran for Mayor, I'd run on that platform
Timeless diner with a lot of history. Decent food with welcoming service. My kids love the candy section!
I love Suttons. This place got me through undergrad and was a big part of what made me feel welcome in Chapel Hill. Their food is good and reasonably priced, but more importantly, the servers are all so kind. It was one of the first places that I ate when I arrived in town and one of the last before I left, and I will really miss it now that I am gone.
It's my favorite lunch spot while shopping on Franklin St. It's like going home. The food is always excellent and the staff warmly welcomes you. It has the old town feel to it which is appreciated since so much in Chapel Hill has changed.
Holy moly. I look for three things on my lunch breaks: cheap, fast, and delicious. Sutton's nailed all three. I got a sandwich and a burger. That burger was AMAZING. It tasted of the tunes my soul longs to hear every meal. I should have gotten three of them! The chicken salad sandwich had some spicy sauce on it that really added a nice change to it. Also, the staff was quick, accurate, and super nice! 11/10. I can't get over that burger.
I love Sutton's. I am a long time customer and fan. It is so much fun looking around at the history of this place. A true UNC landmark, with wonderful staff. The cheeseburgers are always the best option. Always piping hot and fresh. Best chili topping in town. Everything is made to order so you will always get your food fresh and hot. My family and I always make this a tradition before a home football game. Maybe one day I'll make the picture boards.
They have great Orangeades, hot dogs, and breakfast! I love this place what makes it special is Holly the waitress she will remember your name after one visit if you're nice to her, she has worked there for over 10 years. Sutton's is owned and operated by family and trusted staff. It has 100's of sodas to choice from, candy by the pound, and home town grill. Thanks for the amazing experience.
Great burger. Friendly and attentive staff. Clean and well lit. Nice retro atmosphere.Try the "potato munchers" if you are a jalepeño poppers fan. I would definately recommend this establishment and look forward to eating here again.
Sutton's Drug Store is the best lunch spot in Chapel Hill. The prices are perfect, the staff is incredibly kind, and the menu has the perfect items for a hot summer day. I highly recommend this super cool, chill, restaurant.
Whether it's Breakfast, or Lunch, you just have to come on in. Good southern hospitality and good food. The history of this place makes it nostalgic. Great atmosphere in a college town
Awesome experience! Good was fantastic and service was fast and friendly!!! Can’t wait to come back on our next visit to Chapel Hill!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast experience this morning. The food was absolutely delicious and presented beautifully. The service was equally impressive; the staff were attentive and very friendly. I truly felt well taken care of throughout my meal. I would highly recommend this establishment for a wonderful start to the day.
A must while in Chapel Hill. The down home, divey environment is so comforting and the food value is great. We’ve taken family here and I plan on doing it again ! We love Sutton’s.
We had two Newyorker, 1 kids burger meal and one phillysteak wrap. Everything was delicious, reasonable prices, and Mimi was so lovely, friendly and helpful. 😍
Their biscuits are AMAZING!!! So fluffy and tasty. They’re not crumbly like some are, and they don’t leave that weird mouthfeel like a lot of places do. They taste like fresh, homemade biscuits. I’m obsessed, with a little jam and butter they give you on the side🤤. I’ve never had biscuits outside of home taste SO good.
This place is amazing. The owner, Don, took incredible care to prepare himself my daughters meal due to a severe food allergy and was happy to see her so happily enjoying it! The atomsphere was fun and sweet and nostalgic and celebratory all at once. The staff is kind and attentive and it really felt like kicking back with family in there. Highly recommend and will definitely come back during our next trip! Thank you Suttons staff!
Still perfect after all these years. I used to eat lunch here twice a week when I was a student at UNC Chapel Hill. 40 years later and I get to bring my family back. I got the burger with chili and slaw and a side of fries. It was a good as I remember. The staff is incredibly friendly and it's so much fun to look around at all the photos and history. I wouldn't change a thing about this place.
Epic 100 year-old drug store on Franklin. Scores of students, locals and visitors flock here for diner classics for breakfast or lunch. The triple deckers and burgers are the things to grab IMO. Next time we’re in CH we’ll give breakfast a try. Not trip to CH is complete without lunch at the counter at Sutton’s.
This place was pretty cool. They only serve breakfast in the morning though. Not sure when lunch starts as they're closed at 2:30. They were able to make me a chicken salad sandwich, but not the burger my husband wanted. That's okay because his breakfast was good (though they forgot his homefries). Very inexpensive. Good service.
Great local drug store with a nice eating area for American favorites including cheeseburgers, fries, and shakes. Tremendously friendly owner and staff that go out of their way to take care of everyone who walks through the front door. I recommend the Turkey Bacon sandwich, piled high with white meat turkey. Free refills on drinks. Fries not overcooked. Saturday afternoons are a good time to visit.
Great "hometown" atmosphere! Set up like an old timey drug store with signed UNC memorabilia and photos on the walls. They serve American style foods; burgers, sandwiches, fries and milkshakes. A menu with UNC inspired names. The potato munchers are a must try! They also sell local honey and locally made jams, jellies, and relishes. Try the Sutton jar pickles!
While in town for a show @ Cat's Cradle, I stumbled across this establishment stuck in time. Eclectic UNC team photos and alumni adorn the walls and ceiling. A large assortment of soda and odds and ends can be found before entering a diner style area with an obscure pharmacy in the rear. The biscuits were good and the coffee was not bad. Service was above par, but the restrooms are dated and a bit cramped. A must stop for the UNC fan.
Quaint little pharmacy and luncheonette that serves breakfast and lunch. Right on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, it is decorated in UNC memorabilia and as lunch time rolls around they inevitably become overrun with students wearing Carolina blue. The menu is standard grill fare: hot dogs, hamburgers, deli sandwiches, milkshakes, and fountain drinks. Service is great as there are not that many tables and many people looking to use them. The sweet potato fries are a really good side for whatever you decide to have.
Come n and get a burger and fries with great taste and generous copious amounts of everything. I love this place and they make their hamburgers in house. Of course there are the barrels of old fashioned candies by the front which earn an A plus but the milkshakes!
Cool lil spot.... old school candy. Nice folks. Me and my baby girl came in like 7 minutes before they closed.....we were welcomed in and served with no problem.... and not rushed out!
I am a Duke fan but always enjoy visiting this location. Place is just basic, good food at a fair price. Lots of history. I am reluctant to give 5 stars to less than higher end restaurants, but this place is unique and great for what it is.
Ol fashion diner food. Prices and portions are fine. Gets crowded, even during the pandemic so if I see too many folk dining I don't go in... it's a small space. I wish they had pork alternatives but hey...its North Carolina 🤷🏾♂️
A local classic. Their food is alright, and the white decor isn't the most flattering (it all looks a bit run down and dirty). Maybe the kitchen shouldn't be so visible, they are not exactly being very appetizing in there (unless you like a greasy grill and tired cooks). Beloved by locals. Once, just as I was leaving, this old guy walks in followed by, like, 7 cameras and reporters. I think he was some sort of UNC coach? What I'm saying is, this place is a UNC staple. Most important of all... Their milkshake score! Their chocolate milkshake is a benchmark of what a milkshake should be. Take note, other restaurants! Thick and decently chocolaty, this stuff should be in the dictionary as the entry representing the truest form of milkshake. It is on my international top 5, not because it goes above and beyond, there is no whipped cream or deep dark chocolate in this beauty, but because it has ascended beyond normal milkshake themes and become true milkshake. The concept of milkshake, no frills, just ice cream, milk, and shake. Last time I had one I think they used vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce? Not a good plan, it weakens the chocolate flavor even more than milk already does, so they are not competing for the very top spot. Still, I could barely tell, so not a major demarcation.
Old-timey soda fountain/restaurant serving American classic fare in a retro-kitsch ambience. The BLT with extra bacon was very good. The grilled ham and cheese was only OK. The basket of onion rings ($4) was a meal in itself. Caveat: don't even think about cardiovascular health.
Sutton's Drug should now be renamed Sutton's Grill. A Chapel Hill landmark, it's now a restaurant only. It gets a lot of traffic from nostalgic alums, and overall it's a an above average "lunch counter" type restaurant but not necessarily a must see destination. If you're on Franklin Street you should check it out.
Nice place. Small but comfy. Plus you get to shop for all kinds of different locally made jams. We got several of them and they were all pretty good. As for food, we had the flame-thrower hot dog and kid's burger there. First time for me to have a specialty hot dog, kinda didn't know what to expect but I liked it, especially the bun. They made it nice and warm. Never had a hot dog bun like that. Super!
Only serve breakfast till 11 am. Time out has eggs and breakfast 24 hours. BLT was great. Gobs of chips has been replaced by a little plastic Lays bag.
The staff was friendly. I had the #3 combo, the home fries were greasy and the bacon was in a bowl near the cooking station uncovered. A good place for the couple of flies that were the store.
To me, this place is more of a Durham staple. The food was okay. It was very crowded. There's no clear place to wait to be seated because it is a drug store and restaurant. As a non-local and not a UNC fan, it was okay. However, if you are a UNC fan, then you may love this place. Such great memorabilia every where!
I had breakfast here with a friend, and I made the mistake of ordering an egg and cheese (yes, this was a bad pick on my part). My sandwich wasn’t appalling, but it was nothing special. I like the diner atmosphere, but the food didn’t match the vibe. It felt like something you’d get at the worst dining hall on campus, but it was 6 dollars.
Tried out this Sutton's Drug Store restaurant. It was packed with people. Looks like a very local and traditional restaurant. The Cheese burger was juicy, but the fries or onion ring were below par. Kind of like a food court quality to us. Do not offer hot drinks, only cold drinks, so we got soft drinks that we do not prefer. This place is pet-friendly. Overall, I will rate it 3 stars. Thanks!
Came here on a Saturday morning after a night on the town. I was pleasantly surprised given what I had heard about the food. SETTING: Walking in here is like taking a step back in time...the drug store is very old school, with pictures all hanging from the ceiling. The flat top grill is completely visible to everyone as well which gives it a diner vibe. FOOD: The breakfast menu is tiny but it has most basics...I had eggs over easy, sausage, and pancakes. Kinda hard to mess up eggs, the sausage was good, but the pancakes were really good (but maybe that was because I never eat pancakes). It was all under $10 too which was a nice plus (the weekend in Chapel Hill was cheap in general compared to Boston which was nice). One really nice thing we witnessed while eating...at the table next to us, we saw our waitress being given an envelope by a group of guys. Apparently, they are regulars and knew it was her birthday so they got her a card which I thought was the sweetest thing. Shows the community/family feel of this place.
I wanted to like this place but everything about it was sub par. It didn't have any of the old timey charm I'd hoped for. Everything is covered in a thin layer of grime. Old mismatched Formica tables, pegboard walls, and stuff stacked around feels very shabby and not the least nostalgic. The hot dog I had wasn't a deli-style Frankfurter, tasting instead like a common Oscar Meyer. The chili tasted out of the can, much like and probably Hormel brand. The flavorless krinkle cut fries were a bland, low quality frozen variety, and sodas are served in single-use Styrofoam cups (!!) Even the old (now retired) pharmacy counter with it's plastic bottles felt more creepy than cool. Promising old-fashioned charm with it's 'since 1925' vintage, it delivers absolutely none. Should change the name to Sutton's Greasy Spoon.
mediocre at best, okay for a cheap lunch. I tried their burger and I can tell that the patty is from freezer. Fries is like the frozen ones you get from grocery store. Basically everything is not fresh and frozen. Service is slow and sanitary condition is only acceptable. Since it is open kitchen, I can see the wall near grill is dirty as hell and everything is covered with oil. I will not return.
I really hate to write a bad review but after eating at this place I got soooo sick vomiting all day. I ordered crispy bacon and some of it was nearly raw. Tried not to eat that part but can’t help but wonder if this is what made me so sick. Nice staff and cool atmosphere but I can’t come back after this experience 😞 Edit- ate here March 19th around 11am. Ordered two pancakes and bacon. Had nothing else to eat prior and was feeling 100% working on my farm prior to coming. I started to feel nauseous pretty quickly after eating and by 12:30p started vomiting every hour for 12 hours. Couldn’t keep anything down all day.
Mess of a sandwich. They're nice folks and a local staple, which is why they get two stars. But it was a 1 star meal. Edit: Not sure how to reply to owner. I've added a photo. The bread was either too old or just too dry and fell apart before the waitress even put the food down. I tried taking a bite but the bottom fell out. It also had no condiments. I know people interpret the club sandwich differently, which is fine, but it compounded the issue of a sandwich that was too dry and falling apart. It's not the first time I've eaten at Suttons, might not even be the last. But I hate sending food back. It makes me feel bad and often times I'd rather just not deal with it and just pay and leave. Again, service is nice, and I love the vibe of the joint.
On Thursday August 18, while in Chapel Hill for business for the day, tried Suttons for take out lunch. Ordered The Lone Star and Big Cheese (I think I got the name of cheese dog rignt). Very disappointing on the quality of the alleged hot dogs, were they trying to be a hot dog or sausage? The quality of it was gritty and almost looked like rolled dog food. As a Chicagoan maybe I am spoiled by higher quality Vienna hot dogs or from being a fan of Nathan's hot dogs. Needless to say this was a waste of money cause neither hotdog was very editable. On a plus side the staff was very friendly and out going. If this had not been a take out order and I was heading out of town probably would have gone back to complain.
I order here 3 times a week and it’s been good but the last month it seems they don’t care anymore. They never prepare the food like you ask anymore. Got a burger today asked for extra Mayo and of course no extra Mayo, asked for my burger to be cut in half and they only cut the tip bun. And of course my burger is cold by now. I’m sitting at the counter waiting for my food and they just walk right around me knowing dang well they took my order to the counter. So after speaking with them they have nothing to say but everyone has bad days. I work very hard for my money and I expect to be treated just like everyone else but I guess my money is no good. It’s a great guy at the register and the one lady who helped me figure out where my food is awesome too. Wish they treated all customers the same
This isn’t a knock on Suttons per say but I am super annoyed with the experience I had this morning in regards to the homeless people who harassed my family as we were getting out of the car. I had my 1 year old and wife in the car, when we parallel parked next to the Wells Fargo atm right by the suttons breakfast spot. My wife and I have always loved eating there when she was going to school at UNC. Chapel Hill and the businesses there have slowly let the homeless infiltrate every part of the town. The three men starting approaching me while I was getting my infant out and yelling at us calling my wife shorty! I almost pepper sprayed them but decided just to drive off and give up on eating at our favorite chapel hill breakfast spot that I’ll never visit again, unless they resolve that issue. Had the same situation happen in Harris teeter at car mill in Carrboro where a homeless man was harassing us while we were trying to buy groceries asking us for money IN THE STORE! The “progressive” nature of chapel hill has slowly made this issue worse in my opinion and I’m happy I don’t live there anymore. It would be nice to enjoy the business when we visit family there without feeling in danger, but I guess that’s not a reality for now. Hope none ends up getting hurt. It’s really sad. The state hospital there has essential caused a Mecca for homelessness in that town.
Used to be good. Not anymore. Ordered a 2 egg cheese omelet with bacon on the side with grits and a biscuit to go. Received what looked like an over done egg tortilla with a sprinkling of cheese on one side, broken up sausage pieces, and cold grits. Decided to try to eat it anyways and there were egg shells in the "omelet". Paid around $9.00 for something I had to throw in the trash. Will never go back. :-(
