This restaurant is right on Highway 290, has a drive-thru and great meat selections. The service was really friendly. We ordered their chicken and cheddar jalapeno sausage with potato salad and macaroni and cheese. The macaroni and cheese was my favorite and the chicken was delicious and cooked perfectly.

You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but my favorite are the brisket sandwiches with the spicy bold sauce. And if you’re dining in, don’t forget to grab some Blue Bell ice cream!

This was my 1st time eating at this BBQ spot. I have traveled many places and have eaten so many so called "the best bbq spot". Well I just found one of those actual best bbq in Texas spots. This place did not disappoint at all. 1st of all the price was just unbelievably low for the amount of food I got. The brisket was so tender and juicy, the jalapeño sausage was amazing, the pork ribs were straight 🔥 and the kicker that really caught me was the slamming sausage. The tea was fresh, mac n cheese was so delicious, corn on the cobb was tasty and the environment was very nice. Mr. Sam was walking around greeting all the customers and it really makes you feel welcome and right at home. Definitely a 10/10 I will make this my monthly visit spot for bbq. I can't wait to go back. Oh and one more thing, that bold sauce was AMAZING!!!

I’ve been here more than a few times and well I’ve got to tell yall, that it has NEVER let me down! I’ve had all of the heavenly delites they offer. This time around I had the 2 meat plate(smokehouse special) and had 2 of the sausage slammers wrapped up for the road. They didn’t make it in the picture. I was hungry! But if you go, you too will go back a few times. I’m just saying. Try it all if you can eat but if not you’ll have more than a few reasons to go back and try it again and again. South side is in my top 5 across Texas bbq joints.

Let me tell you I've been visiting Texas for a week and found this gem! The people are super friendly and great atmosphere. The brisket was perfect but the surprise was the bacon wrapped sausage OMG! I'm coming here again and bringing my Texas friends because they are all super jealous!!

I can’t say enough about this place! We tried just about everything- brisket, chicken, sausage, Turkey, slammers and peach cobbler. Absolutely delicious! Super friendly staff, awesome facility and huge inside!

This place was great. Fresh bbq and friendly staff! I got the three meat plate with potato salad and mac&cheese. Portions were big. Turkey and pork ribs were flavorful, juicy and tender. The mac & cheese was the best I've ever had! Potato salad was also delicious. Sausage slammer was equally delicious. If I didn't live 2 hours away I'd visit every day!😂 The pecan pie was also great! They have a meat market on site and bought some sausage and slammers to make at home.

Best barbecue place hands down used multiple occasions for company lunch events. They were always on time and their staff is incredibly hospitable. The company lunch events were for 70 + personnel and they all enjoyed the food. I highly recommend the brisket and half chicken with the side of their amazing mac and cheese dish

I’ve been passing by this place for the last 5 years and never stopped in for one reason or the other. Finally made it in today and I am so disappointed in myself for not stopping in sooner!! We ordered the Southside Combo sandwich and plate. I had the sandwich with brisket and sausage and OMG…the meats were both juicy and busting with flavor! Everything was great from the way the sandwich bun was toasted and dressed or buttered with the juices from the meats. I travel to the Elgin area about once a month and I guarantee that I will be back to try more and leave another review on sides like potato salad, mac and cheese, etc. Don’t pass this place up!!

Portions could be increased by 2 more slices of beef a few more pieces of sausages for the pricing. But the environment extremely clean, free of odors. The bathrooms are kept clean, stocked up and free of falling.

Went here after church on a Sunday around 11am. Line was short. Staff were very friendly. Food was great! I was happy they had a great selection of Coke products including Coke Zero and Cherry Coke. Dining room was nothing fancy but no big deal to me. It was clean. Great lunch!

Try the beef ribs if they are not sold out.... the cream corn is DELICIOUS.... the chicken is seasoned well and moist even at the breast. The service is friendly and there are always smiles in the dining area.... just good Texas people And food....

We have finally found our favorite BBQ joint! The Brisket baked potatoe was huge and delicious, and the sausage sandwich was mammoth-sized as well. I highly recommend this place for your next hankering for good BBQ. I can assure you that you won't leave hungry.

Fantastic barbecue experience! The sausage was just simmering in its own juice, all the more tender and delectable. The brisket? Moist and flavorful, with a to die for smoke ring. The potato salad is some of the best I've had at any barbecue place, hands down. The macaroni was also tasty but not a personal fave - I'll probably try something else on the sides menu next time. Next time? Oh there will SO be a next time!

Meat lovahs only!!! Blessed enough to have eaten at Southside since I was a child & I even remember the original building with its screen door and the railroad tracks next door!! Always delicious food. Yummy dessert, fantastic sides, iced tea on point, buffet with all the fixings!! God bless Southside Market!!

Great! Lunch today at Southside. Had the two meet plate, with pork, belly and lamb rib. Both can be hard to find, and both were done perfectly. Beans and coleslaw for the sides, beans barely done but good, and coleslaw was very good. Topped off with a shiner Bock

I make the trip from Houston to Austin occasionally throughout the year almost every time I make sure I get to stop by Southside. I eat At many different barbecue places, but southside is by far my favorite! This Trip I got the three meat two sides and it was delicious! The sauce is outstanding, my favorite. You have to try this place to know what real Texas barbecue tastes like!

Worth the trip to this BBQ location! Sausage is superb. Highly recommended! They take CC and have a huge amount of variety from brisket to sausage to 3 types of ribs including lamb and baby back! They also serve fresh daily made sides (potato salad FTW) and desserts! Brisket is decent and the regular ribs were a little dry, but that didn't matter as the sausage was beyond fantastic. No need for sauce but they have it along with delicious hot sauce. We ordered meats by the pound but they also have sandwiches and plates that come with sides. Lots of merchandising available for purchase and the staff is very friendly while running this beast of a BBQ joint! Enjoy!!

Great brisket and sausage, a little pricey but it's quality BBQ. We ran into this place on our way to Houston and glad we walked in to try it cause it will definitely be on our itinerary when traveling in that direction.

They have multiple locations between Austin and the western Houston area. They represent the traditional Texas meat market and bbq shop. This is a great example of how the Texas bbq scene came to be. They use oak for their smoking process.

This is some of the best barbecue not only in the state of Texas but that you will ever taste. I do believe they're the oldest barbecue place in the state of Texas and they definitely have the art down. When you consider the grocery chains have picked up their sausage to sell in the grocery store once again that tells you the quality of their products. Anything you get off the menu here is going to be good. They're pinto beans are a favor to mine because I hate ranch style beans and these are not that type. Their potato salad is creamy and delicious. Brisket of course was smoked and cooked to perfection. Chicken was tender and juicy. And their sausage again is some of the best I've ever had in my life.

This is by far one of the best places in the world to get a traditional BBQ meal, portions are fabulous, prices are good and taste is out of this world. Worth the travel just for the smokey taste. Lots of history told through the pictures on the wall, a whole experience for a tourist, you can even buy a texas-shaped pie.

I ordered the Elgin Sausage, a nostalgic choice for me since I grew up enjoying it at Meshack’s BBQ in South Dallas. The food was great—my only minor complaint was that the barbecue sauce was a bit lighter than I prefer. However, the highlight of my visit was Jose in the butcher shop. He took the time to walk me through the different sausages, sharing his deep knowledge and passion for the craft. I was truly impressed—this guy needs his own butcher shop! Overall, a great experience, and I’ll definitely be back.

Walking in to Southside you are met with such a friendly atmosphere. I didn’t feel rushed and was not in a hurry to leave because we had such a great experience. We were approached by a gentleman who worked there that was so nice and sweet. We will definitely return soon.

Stopped by South Side BBQ and everything was on point. I had the brisket, sausage, beans, mac and cheese, and potato salad and not a single thing disappointed. The brisket was tender and full of flavor, the sausage had a great snap, and the sides were just as good as the meat (which says a lot). The mac and cheese was creamy, the beans were seasoned perfectly, and the potato salad tied it all together. Good food, solid portions, and definitely worth the stop. I’ll be back for sure.

The food never disappoints, there's plenty of seating, and the staff is excellent. They ran out of peach cobbler, so I opted for the cobbler they had (a-la mode, of course), and it did not disappoint. I also love the atmosphere. I knew every country song they played!

Ambience was charming, lots of seating space, and well maintained. Quality of the food over all was really good; however, I will say we were underwhelmed with the lack of flavor the brisket had and the lamb ribs were pure grisel/fat, definitely would not recommend. Also they only had one original barbecue sauce in stock and we found it to be really bland.

Old School BBQ Brisket: Tender, smoky, solid bark. It’s not trying to be wagyu—it’s just honest, old-school brisket. Not the juiciest cut I’ve ever had, but the flavor was there. Jalapeño Cheese Sausage: juicy. spicy kick, melty cheese inside. One of the best I’ve had. Baby Back Ribs: Clean pull, great seasoning, but I could’ve used a little more smoke punch. Still, they didn’t need sauce, which says a lot. If you want craft BBQ, this might not be it. If you want a taste of tradition? Pull up a chair.

This was my welcome to Austin BBQ experience. We visited SM&B based on the recommendation of a friend of a friend. We arrived about 1:30pm. There was plenty of seating for our party of 5. The staff was courteous. The young lady at the ice cream counter was wonderful. She has a lively spirit and she's full of goofy but funny jokes. I ordered the 3 meat platter. My platter came with brisket, jalapeño cheddar sausage, baby back ribs, mac&cheese and coleslaw. I also ordered the blackberry cobbler for dessert. The cobbler lacked the sweetness of the cobblers I usually receive at restaurants. The coleslaw had pretty good bite and it was a good compliment to the fatty meats. The brisket was pretty good and if I had to rate it on a scale of 1-10 I would say it was about a 6. The sausage was really good and if I hadn't stopped somewhere else while on this trip I would've said it was the best I've had. It was good enough for me to purchase a family pack before leaving the store. The Mac&cheese was enjoyable and came with a crumbly topping. I would rate that about a 6.5 out of 10. While on our trip we visited a few other bbq places that we feel performed better thank SM&B. I don't know that I would make the trek from the airport to visit again but there were plenty of people there and there was a full line in the drive through so it's obviously a popular choice. I say give it a try and see what you think.

Southside BBQ has the BEST chicken salad I've had in a long time. 😍 BUT, I had to update this review. I tried a Tuesday- chicken thigh sandwich- special. Somehow, this place managed to take the most tender part of a yardbird and make it... inedible. The thing was just too tough to chew. It wasn't worth the discount.

Lunch room style setting with plenty seats. BBQ is really good, but if you like sweet & spicy sauce on top you won't find it here. Lunch: 2 meat plate (sausage and chopped brisket - brisket was amazing) with potato salad (unsweetened - not my fav) and beans (I thought they were baked beans but they're bland pintos 😒) with bread. Also had the blackberry cobbler with ice cream ( Best Dessert Ever). I had way more than I needed. Also tried my BF's mac and cheese - it's not baked but it's alright. I'd get it next time. The turkey is juicy as well. Pros: Great price, fast and friendly service, crushed ice, bluebell service bar & plenty of room. Cons: Flies inside, restrooms not great, bbq sauce mediocre.

An authentic Texan barbeque experience. I ordered the two-meat plate with lamb ribs and pork chop. Came with choice of two sides. The food was great but was on a bit fatty side. I liked the bold BBQ sauce better than the the original version, maybe because I prefer stronger flavors with a touch of sweet in them. Cost of the order just under $17 for one person.

Drive thru got basic order correct… 1 regular link sausage cut into qtr sections… I asked for wheat bread and 4 slices ( one for each quarter section of sausage) on the original order… I MENTIONED and CONFIRMED 4 slices of bread , and received two slices of WHITE bread …. Disappointed😞

The food here is some classic Texas BBQ, they do it right for sure. The only thing negative I will say is don’t order online. I’ve ordered online twice and both times they were out of a particular menu item that was not updated on the online order page. Even the premium meats that cost more, if they don’t have that, you just have to get another cheaper meat and don’t get reimbursed. So go in person to order. It’s just easier that way. But the many times I’ve went in person; the staff was always friendly and extremely helpful. As I said above, the food is just amazing. I seriously recommend the Sausage Slammer. That thing is a magical piece of food. It’s like a jalapeño popper and a sausage had a love child. Insanely good. I highly recommend.

A friend told me how great he thought this place was. I drive to Austin from Houston numerous times a year but rarely stop to eat. My last trip I scheduled my trip just to finally stop for Lunch. It was damned good chopped beef on a bun and tasty sauce (I mix the hot and classic for a nice combo). No fat, chopped fine, flavorful. The sausage slammer, however, is something I won't order again. Greasy, gross cheese, not at all a good combination or texture. I'm sure my opinion is in the minority, but as long as they have great bbq... next I hope to try the baked potato.

This place was what I hoped it wasn't over priced hype eventho the lamb rib was good parts were tuff as leather the sides were plain portions are small brisket was the best thing I had for 33$ just another overpriced BBQ spot to drive by it looks great but smoke no fire

We were thrilled to stop here on our way back from Round Top , TX after reading the history of the place. We’ve tried multiple BBQ joints in and around Austin, so we kind off know traditions around the Lone Star state’s BBQ. The server who was helping us said the associate ringing us up would give us the bread sides etc, which was not done until we asked. Eventually we figured ourselves based on prior knowledge of other BBQ joints where to find the sauces and toppings. We liked their bold sauce, thinly sliced onions, just right pickles and jalapeños. Worst part was that with our order of 1lb beef brisket we were given this chunk of fatty tissue. We had gone back to pick up 1/2 lb to go, and after watching the guy slice meat and discard some pieces, which I assume where the fatty tissue ends, I let the associate who rang us up both times know that we had this chunk in our order. She said, maybe because we ordered it, for which I replied no to. She had nothing else to say, just a long awkward stare. Long story short that seemed like a sneaky business tactic unlike any other BBQ joint we’ve been to.

First timer, I ordered the Southside Combo (brisket and sausage) with pintos and potato salad. My S.O. had the 1-meat plate with brisket, cole slaw and mac & cheese. Someone must have been sleeping because the order was all wrong; the meats were on the wrong plates and both had potato salad instead of one with coleslaw, so demerits for inaccuracy. I guess someone also thought we wanted extra lean because the brisket was really dry. It was really sad! That said, at least the flavor was still good. The SAUSAGE, however, was amazingly moist, tender and really fantastic! As far as the sauce goes, however, I can only recommend the "bold" because the "regular" sauce tasted like it had a LOT of cinnamon in it...bleah... And I do not understand that at all! The "hot" sauce was basically vinegar and cayenne. FYI, be sure to order moist brisket. Also, FYI, the bathrooms were really good.

Good, but not my favorite. There are lots of options on the menu and plenty of merchandise, sauce and seasonings to buy. I appreciate the variety of options. They also have a meat counter where you can buy cold sausage and other meats, which is nice. I'll probably come back just for that feature. Brisket was good and the Slammers were tasty as well. Mac and cheese tasted homemade.

We both got the two meat plate with brisket and sausage. For sides we had Mac and cheese and potato salad. The brisket and all the sides were great! We were excited for the sausage since it was written on the wall that they’re known for it, however, it was very greasy and soggy. The flavor wasn’t bad but it really was just a greasy, soggy mess. Had some ice cream and peach cobbler for dessert and they were both delicious!

We had the jalapeno sausage and the beef sausage. Sadly the potato salad was the highlight of the meal. There was nothing wrong with the sausage It had good texture and it was salted properly. It was just super mild. The beef may as well have just been beef with salt and pepper stuffed in a casing, and the jalapeno cheddar sausage had no flavor other than the jalapenos in the cheddar cheese. I expected a lot more from the sausage in the sausage capital of Texas. We didn't try any of the brisket or other barbecue. When we got there the brisket they were cutting looked awfully dry, but they subsequently brought out one that looked pretty good. I can only speak for the sausage which was disappointing.

We stopped in for lunch and I did the combo plate which came with brisket, sausage, and two sides. I was bummed that the brisket was dry. The sausage tasted spongey. The coleslaw and mac and cheese were the best part of the plate. I thought the bold bbq sauce had great flavor.

I haven't been to SSM in a great while. I still love the country atmosphere and the service was good. I thought it weird that I purchased 5lbs of sausage and brisket beans, potato salad a full meal for 6 over $100 and I had almost left but looked in the bag to find no bread, crackers, pickles, onions or napkins. I had to go back and ask them to receive all those things, they could have asked it's the neighborly thing to do! So I get in the car and was excited to make myself a little sausage sandwich for the drive back to Austin. My mouth was not pleasantly pleased as it felt like raw mush in my mouth. I don't believe the sausage was done. As you can see from the picture it had an irregular link shape that had some small parts and really thick round parts of the sausage it wasn't evenly filled therefore, it probably didn't cook even, that was a problem. When I got home. I cooked all of the sausage in the oven because it was not done. It tasted okay but not like I remember when I was younger, something has changed but it was good enough. Do better 4th generation! This is a landmark in our great state of Texas the world watches our BBQ! P.S. stop running out of peach cobbler!

I've been looking for a good BBQ restaurant in Texas and was told Southside is one of the best. Being a cook and food connoisseur myself, I was looking forward to it. Plate: I ordered the 1 meat (brisket) w/ mac & cheese and beans. My brother had the 3 meat plate w/ brisket, chicken, and sausage. Unfortunately, it didn't land where we expected. For the price, the portions were small, the meat was room temp and had no flavor, the BBQ sauce is kept separate in a pump and was cold and watered down. The mac was cooked well, but lacked flavor and the beans were ok. Dessert: Peach Cobbler was good, however there was no crust, so it was more like sweet warm peaches with vanilla ice cream. Condiments: There weren't any covers over the condiments and customer's weren't wearing mask. Enough said! Conclusion: Southside is like the fast food version of BBQ and I will not return. The hunt for real authentic Texas BBQ continues.

I went thru drive through to order on sign it says 16. Something for 1lb of brisket and 12 Something for 1lb of sausages that charged me almost 90 dollars for a lil of nothing 3 slices of bread and single serving of bbq sauce only 1 person supposed to eat the bread u order 2lbs of brisket and a whole sausage and u pay 90 when on the sign it says almost 17 a lb wow think they need to change the prices and give more sauce and bread for ordering alot of food

Man, I hate having to give a low review, I want to start off by saying that I've come here for many years and the services is really trash at this point, food is okay for barbecue, I'm not going to make it seem like it's the best in the state of Texas, but the sausage to me is my favorite but today on my way back from Houston, I stopped by and spent $80 on the barbecue, the service was just terrible, the place was empty as you can see in the photos and I asked them if they do military discount and they didn't even know, they had to check with this manager who was a young white girl, she came over to the register and did some things and I thought okay, good, I got a military discount which I'm grateful for!, but when I looked at the receipt as you can look at the receipt, I got a whole total of $1.20 off and what she did was just take one of the line items and take 10% off of that, so that is different from what Rudy's Barbecue does, they actually give you 10% off the whole amount and also do other barbcue places, so I wasn't very pleased about that, I don't think they should be doing that, I think they should give First Responders and veterans 10% off the entire meal but that wasn't the case here, also they forgot to put my banana pudding in the bag after waiting for the bag to come my way for some time because apparently there was confusion on who needed deliver my food to me when the place was empty so I was kind of disappointed about that it seemed like they just kept not caring about me or other customers so that is my just Chief complaint today, which is how they forgot my freaking banana pudding and gave me the lowest discount that I've ever gotten in my entire life and as you can see barbecue is not cheap $80 for these items there's definitely gone up, I don't know what we're going to do in this country if things keep going the way they're going, again I'm not saying don't go there, I recommend the place but the service needs to be picked up and people need to be aware of giving customers their food as fast as they can.

Ribs was dry and asked for moist brisket but mainly got fat..I didn't eat it mostly. I wish y'all had better side options. Service was great but the food was not.

When we made it to the 9 to order, they were out of lot of their meets.\n They would not substitute for their family meals, even though they was out of certain meats. So it's still a little frustrating. And I think that was right if you're gonna by the family meal and they're out of an item off the list, i feel that they should be able to substitute in order to be able to get that certain meal for that they are advertising for the same price. So I was very frustrated with the surface, and the manager.

I purchased 2 combo plates for my family dinner the two meats I had was sausage and brisket beans and potato salad with a side of Mac the meats were flavorless the Mac and cheese was runny the sausage was like rubber the barbecue sauce was super watery and no flavor it was like I dipping in water the only thing that was good is the pickles and the sweet tea.im not sure if there is new management but this was horrible didn’t even eat it I was throwing it in trash when I took this picture for this review it was not worth $47.36 at all I don’t remember it tasting like this at all. It’s not the same anymore place was completely empty I remember coming in on Sundays and it would be packed.

Today 09/05/2025 I stopped in. These place use to be a hometown favorite. I do not know what happen to the recipe. Today I order $25.00 (3, 8" pieces) sausage, $20.00 pork ribs (4), and $23.00 brisket (2 pieces the total was $83.00 after tax. THIS FOOD WAS BEYOND HORRIBLE. The taste of all three meats was pitiful. There was no line. We were the only vehicle in the drive thru which should have been a red flag. It took 10 minutes to receive order. I will not be returning for another long long time, if any. Very disappointed. The best of the meal was the bottle of big red soda.

Man, I hate to say any BBQ is bad, but the brisket was actually inedible here. Service was slow and unfriendly. I asked if they had moist brisket. The server didn't answer, but just started cutting. I should have stopped right there when I saw the meat being cut, that's on me. I never should have paid, but thought I should give it a chance. Very, very dry meat ... the driest brisket I've ever seen. Sadly, I had to toss it in the trash and head on down the road. That's my experience.

Smelled like urine by the bathrooms. The beans and potato salad were awful . The cobbler and ice cream area suck. Moist means all fat and lean means dry or burn? What the heck?

The service was wonderful. The service is great however, the potato salad taste it very old smoked sausage were very greasy. The turkey appeared not to be cooked all the way in the chicken is the number one thing that I will order when I return if you ask for two different scoops of ice cream, you will be charged for two different prices.

Husband called in a to-go order at 5:06 & was told it would be ready about 5:35. He went in approximately 6 pm and they did not have our food ready. We waited at least 15 minutes for them to prepare our order. The sliced brisket was dry and tough. The coleslaw was decent, not terrible but not great. Jalapeno cheese sausage was pretty good but I can't eat just that. The BBQ sauce it just awful. It tastes like straight tomato sauce with SOME seasoning. And just FYI, the food wasn't late because it was a Friday and they were busy. It's Halloween and the entire place was dead empty. Needless to say, I didn't eat. And whatever he doesn't eat, will be given to the dogs. At almost $60 for what was ordered, I am HIGHLY disappointed.
