The location is great to view the bay. They have great decor that is interesting to look at and it adds to the ambiance. I was very happy my fish and chips came with a salad. All the food was very good, including my husband's fillet of sole. I would definitely come back and I would recommend it to anyone in the area.
Beautiful place to eat as it’s right on the bay. If you go for breakfast like I did, you can watch the trawlers start fishing. You can also see plenty of wildlife like seals playing. Personally I think it’s cute when birds are nearby and begging for food and there’s plenty of that if you sit outside. They have a great menu. My favorite it’s there Monte Cristo sandwich 🧡
My first time eating here despite hearing great things for years. The seafood chowder lives up to the hype. The bread bowl was unexpectedly delicious and I'm kinda mad I haven't been able to go back yet. 10/10 patio lunch choice
Authentic fishing village diner with crab Benedict, crab & shrimp omelets, sole and eggs, just to name a few original dishes on the menu. Giant mimosas lol and a fantastic view. Went in winter and still awesome so I can only imagine how pretty this spot is on the lanai in summer. Thank you Gills by the sea :)
Sort of a throwback local diner feel. Plenty of outdoor tables, clear partitions for wind abatement. We sat inside. Simple fare, well done. Very attentive staff. A mistake came through the kitchen, and it was obvious the 'new person' needed a bit of training on someone's handwriting. They were jovial enough about it, and the plate was corrected before it ever got to the table. We usually sit right at the counter, for just such experiences. The pancakes are serious. So are the omelets, impressively fluffy. Like, who eats that much food at one sitting? Walk out of here and you probably don't need lunch. Decent prices, near quite a few older shore houses and a trailer park. Excellent views of the water. Very homey feel, good value and good eats. REVISITED this November. Not putting the naughty into nautical themes, but there are plenty of crabs and puffer fish displayed. I skipped pancakes, went for a biscuits and a few scrambled eggs. The biscuit confused me, as I do these myself... finger spreading and folding the dough vs. rolling, lightest protein content flour (self rising) can find. These weren't breads, weren't flakey exactly, but.would hold up well to being doused in pan gravy. My wife has the Linguica special with rye. Not that this is unusual, but we took a lot of it away with us. Friendly crew still. We got there after 9, and the parking lot was half full. These folks are a local fixture, and the business seems to have a permanent clientel. Well done across the.board, counter, menu, and plates.
I had to stop in Eureka for fuel, and the kid at the gas station was eating a sando that simply put...Looked Amazing! I asked him where he got his lunch, and he popped off...Gill's by the Bay, he said they're the best! So...Off I went, and had an awesomely delicious salmon sandwich! 5 stars all the way! ☆☆☆☆☆
This is the kind of place that deserves several visits, as long as you are OK with leaving your dog at home or in the car — assuming that it is a cloudy, misty, low temperature, safe day! — because there are nearby trails great for dog walking. (Although there is an outside deck and grounds, only certified ADA dogs are permitted.) The menu is standard diner fare, and there is a range of comfortable seating options, both inside and outside. During busy times, it may take a while before your order is taken, but once it is in, it pops out relatively quickly (yay!), and when sitting at the counter, water and coffee refills are provided in a timely manner. I can recommend any iteration of things with gravy on them: full biscuits, potatoes and gravy, a half order, or “Bobbie’s Biscuit.” Portions were generous and filling. I appreciated having the option of tomato juice (which I could spice up with Tabasco), and there are also mimosas 🥂available. During my visit in early October, the specials on the whiteboard included both Crab 🦀 Omelette and Crab Benedict. Other seafood based options were also available.
Delicious fresh made food! Although the restaurant was busy the waitress and cooks were working hard! While it was beautiful to sit outside, there was a wait so we belly’d up to the bar and watched how efficient and quick everyone worked together. Ordered a cup of their seafood chowder that had clams, shrimp and mushrooms and the Sandy Beach Sandwich with bay shrimp, bacon, green onions and cheddar cheese on grilled sourdough with fries. Sitting at the bar we were able to see all of the food that came out! They had a hot and cold crab sandwich that both looked delicious . Their Pub Cod sandwich was huge! The Shrimp Louie salad was big and had a lot of bay shrimp on it. This place was definitely worth the wait! Don’t miss out!
Great and popular place. We hit the Sunday lunch rush, but didn't have to wait for a table. We got our beverages right away - lemonade tasted house-made, water, and the large glass of champagne - but did wait a bit for our food (which was understandable, as they were slammed). Food worth the wait! BLT and fries were perfect; cold crab sandwich was stuffed with delicious crab in mayo with bit of green onion - no fillers! Our dessert was mixed berry pie, and vanilla ice cream. Despite being in the weeds, the staff was friendly and took the time to explain the dishes (we were newbies), and the owner talked to us about the photos, etc., on the wall., and history. We'll go back!
We came from Sacramento for a weekend away to visit some beautiful hikes. A local who used to work here recommended this place. The crab eggs Benedict was absolutely perfect taste wise, the sauce tasted exactly like it should, although the yolk was a bit too firm, the side salad was really good the lettuce was fresh and crisp. Husband had crab omelette but he felt like there was not enough crab in his dish and there were barely any bell peppers (they are extra to add). It is a bit stuffy inside, but still a nice atmosphere. It might be better if some of the windows were cracked open an inch or two. There was a sign on the patio that only service dogs are allowed. The staff were friendly and hardworking. I would come back to try their seafood chowder next.
Gill's by the Bay has been here for 35 years for a reason! This restaurant has a very cozy local feel, and the staff is amazing. Plenty of outdoor seating and indoor seating. We were lucky enough to be on vacation at the restaurant while they still had fresh crab in season. We ordered the hot and cold crab sandwiches, and the calamari steak. Everything tasted amazing! I would definitely stop by if you are in the area.
Food was average to good, I don't believe it is worth all of the hype. We ran into a complication while eating at the establishment, one of our party members has an aversion to citrus we advised our waitress she did great at placing the lemons on the side. Unfortunately every plat the had fries was garnished with oranges placed directly on top of the fries. Sadly the person ordered fish and chips, so she was only able to eat the fish portion. Four of use added the clam chowder... which was devoid of potatoes, a critique more than a complaint.
Maybe we had far too many expectations, the sandwiches we all ordered seemed pretty small and although well filled, they had nothing really special although expensive. The specials of the day were just another crab sandwiches. They had trouble to split the bill, we were overcharged, and it took some time to have it cleared. The waitress was busy, it wasn’t packed full but she was the only person we saw taking orders, delivering all meals to the tables, etc. Probably she had too much in her head to hear that one of us have citrus allergy and we had lemons in the side but slice of orange on the fries.
The cod and bread was super fresh but the staff seemed frazzled and took away from enjoying this cozy seaside restaurant. We were sat easily enough and chose inside since the outside tables were full. Our food came out quickly. I'd eat here again. Bonus they have a very small flower garden and a dock to walk out to the ocean. There are blackberry bushes along the back of the parking lot that we enjoyed as we walked from a nearby Airbnb. There is a small trail that is a lovely stroll after eating.
Overview: Seafood Cafe with views of the water Meal/Time: Lunch/Saturday Party Size: 2 Seated: 1137AM Ordered: 1141AM First ordered item arrived: Salad and soup out 1144AM Mains out 1157AM Decor/Atmosphere: Fisherman diner. Inside booths and counter seating. Outside patio dining area. Service/ Front of the House: Need to check in inside with the hostess. Service/Serving Staff: Our server was FM as it was on the bill. Sweet lady. Really made us feel welcomed. Awesome smile. Food: Gumbo is good. Shrimp and chicken is a slight kick. Salad has chicken peas and pickled beets. Good solid side salad. The coleslaw is lacking flavor. The fries are semi think cut but perfectly seasoned... Great Job. The clam cutlet is pounded clam then breaded and pan fried. It's heavy on the breading but its also heavy on the flavor... thumbs up. The fish and chips are pretty good too. Taste like beer battered .. flaky and moist white fish (cod) I think inside a golden brown shell. Restroom: Single men's with urinal and toilet. Clean, well lit and roomy. Sink area is clean but there were some paper on the floor near garbage can. Will I come back? Yes, I would like to check out calamari
Food was good. We got our soups right away, but didn't get our lunch dishes for over 20 min later! It was busy when we arrived but a number of tables left as we were seated, so we don't understand why it took so long. There was no explanation given either. We arrived at 1ish on a Friday. Soup of the day gumbo was yummy. Daily special fish tacos had a lot of batter on the fish... I'm used to the fish being less battered. Hubby's fish and chips were less battered than my fish tacos.
The food itself was good and well-prepared, with flavors that made the meal enjoyable. Menu options seemed solid, and the quality was not the issue. The service, however, was poorly executed. Staff and kitchen operations felt disorganized, and the waitress unexpectedly took my plate mid-bite after realizing it was the wrong sandwich. The lack of coordination significantly detracted from the experience.
Heard about a nice place to watch the bay and enjoy some good seafood. As a server it's hard eating out because you know what is going on behind the scenes but I am here to help clear things up. Sat down and was quickly met by a nice lady who was very friendly. Indicated I was a first timer and she offered some suggestions. I ended up going with the lunch special of fish and chips and bumping it up with the seafood chowder for a total of about $19. Added in a beer. Soup came first, described as creamy with clams and shrimp (no fish). Oyster crackers on the side of course. The soup was warm, not hot with no shrimp and two barely noticeable pieces of I think clam. Fail. Next up the fish and chips arrived. Fish looked beautiful (cod) with four nice sized pieces and a good amount of fries. The fish was noticeably greasy on delivery so I let it sit while I ate the fries. The seasoned fries were sadly not hot and fresh like the fish, clearly they had been sitting. The restaurant I must add was nearly empty around 2 pm when I was there. I asked for some hot fries when it was apparent they were not edible and was given some with no problem. Definitely better, thanks. Service was very friendly but just typical OK, as after the food was dropped there was no check back to make sure it was all good (which it wasn't). I want to give this place 4 stars but the deal is that you are paying for the location. And with that I would say it is a nice place to go on occasion but will not likely make a regular stop. Kudos for the eco-friendly to-go box and all around easy nice vibe there. 3.5 stars. total approx $25, $30 with tip in other words, a bit pricey for average fare and service.
