Avis sur Awash Ethiopian Restaurant Albee Square
Delicious food, delicious ambiance. I was so impressed with the veggie platter. The waiter forgot to bring me my lemons for the water, but the water was perfectly chilled and I didn't miss 'em. Will be back again and again.
12:10 4 Serious question, who, besides Ethiopians, know out of the gate that Ethiopian food is awesome? Don't be scared by the fact you don't have utensils (it's actually a nice throwback to when you were a kid). Do wash your hands very well before eating (you should anyway). After a beautiful renovation a few years ago you feel the quality of those place come out in the ambience and not just the food. It'll be hard to figure out what you may like so opt for a combo with meats. Extra spongy bread will help you soak up all the goodness. The sambusas are a crowd pleaser to start (particularly for the kids). If you drink give their specialty cocktails a try or the Ethiopian beer. I'd also recommend coming here on a weeknight as it can get packed on the weekends (I think the word is out). Itd be great if they had more help during those peak times but if you're patient it's worth the wait.
Great Ethiopian food in a groovy environment. If you ask me it’s probably the best Ethiopian restaurant in town. The vegan combo was very generous and absolutely delicious.
Delicious food. The vegetarian combo platter was absolutely phenomenal, I could have eaten several platters of it. My only complaint is that the plants in the restaurant were not real, which was disappointing. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant and would definitely come back.
Great restaurant with large plates to share. An assortment to eat, chicken, fish, beef, vegetarian, and vegan options. The drinks are delicious , some might say pricey, but it's on point for New York. They also offer Ethiopian wine, beer, and coffee. The staff here is also excellent and very attentive
Great food. They accommodate gluten free and celiac people well.
Great food and the staff was super nice. Worth it! The vegetarian sampler for two was amazing and the portion was more than enough.
So good. Went as a party of 3 on a monday, got the BK chicken combo platter. It was so, so good. Everything was very tasty and went so well with the (copious) injera. I didn't get anything to drink, but the cocktail list looked fun and there was a nice looking wine list.
This place is legit! Such great flavors and the staff is really nice. There were three of us and we got both the vegan and meat samplers and that was plenty of food (plus we got to try almost everything, which was awesome). The beef and the red lentils were my faves but really enjoyed eating everything! Also, the frog tiles in their restroom are just adorable. Love this place, highly recommended!
First time sitting down for Ethiopian food. All the spices were unfamiliar, and it was exciting to have something new. I can't compare it to other places because of my limited experience, but it was all very delicious, and I was happy eating vegetables.
We're so lucky to have great Ethiopian in the neighborhood. We always get the vegan sampler and it's always amazing.
Good food, good service, high quality, I like the paintings and plants. The decor is pleasant as well. Doesn’t take apple pay?!? Good water. Good for groups of 4 and couples. If you have acrylics take them off and come to this restaurant!!!
I would like to first thank Milka and Romeo for being not only an amazing hosts/owners, but also an amazing couple who went above and beyond to make my engagement gathering the most memorable, special moment ever. The food was amazing, the drinks were fantastic and a lot of the guest were loving the food that was served. I was blessed to have been able to have such an amazing event hosted by both Milka and Romeo and I strongly recommend everyone to go and experience an awesome time at Awash. You will love the vibe, atmosphere, music and the attention that the staff will give you. Thank you once again , many blessings and I will be back soon!
This is literally one of my favorite restaurants. The food is phenomenal. The staff is so warm and helpful. The atmosphere is relaxed. I highly recommend the vegetable sambusa and the avocado salad, two thing I nust order with my dinner every time I am there. The honey wine is also nice.
Excellent Ethiopian food! I got the vegan sampler and by the end of the meal I couldn’t breathe I was so full! Beer was nice and refreshing. Service was excellent!
We wanted to try something new and decided to try Ethiopian food without any knowledge of the culture. It tasted a bit similar to Indian food, the spice/flavor is lighter than Indian curry. We asked for recommendations, and we ordered Beef Sambusa for appetizer. I loved the sauce. As for entree, we got the meat combination, it included lentils, chicken curry, beef curry and vegetables. Loved it. The portion is HUGEEEE even for 2 ppl nevertheless I enjoyed it. As for drinks, the ladies ordered honey wine. It tasted sllimiliar to plump wine. They LOVED it. As for me, I got the Ethiopian beer and it tasted okay. Parking is available on the street. The area is a actually quite.. we left at 10pm and there was barely any ppl compared to Williamsburg area.
Never had Ethiopian food before and this place was great!! Had the BK special and we definitely be will be returning! The staff were super friendly and gave us recs and gluten free injera too! The plants and decor was very pretty as well. Will be recommending this place to everyone I know! Definitely worth it!!!
Great food, we got the meat combo and were able to choose which veg dishes came with it, which is ideal. Nice ambiance and service
The food is great. I always get a vegan sampler when I get food from Awash, even though I am definitely not vegan. I also had a vegan dessert off of their menu, for the first time: banana bread with chocolate chips and a scoop of non-dairy pistachio ice cream. Last night was my first time actually eating in the restaurant and I liked the atmosphere, especially the art work on the walls. And the staff were all really nice and gave good recommendations when we needed them. The only thing I considered taking this down to 4 stars for is that they forgot the appetizer we ordered, so we had to reorder it and we got it well after we'd started our main meals. But it seems unnecessary to drop a whole star just for that, when the overall experience was great. So. Yeah, I'd recommend this place to others.
Truly enjoyed my experience here, from the music to the food; it is a highlight memory for me. But I'll note that the injera was very light in color, texture and flavor (if that means anything to you)...and that menu prices are slightly higher now than the pictures of the menu that they previously posted here.
One of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. Been coming here about 2 years now, and the food is always great. Which is why I think it’s important to note that last night the food was even more on point than normal that it compelled me to write this review. ask for the awaze sauce on the side too, you won’t regret it.
Excellent food, great margarita (can you believe?!), and incredible vegan options too! I love that they have Tofu Tibs, which gives me some protein when I am ordering plant-based. The staff is lovely, friendly, and professional! I look forward to my weekly Awash dinner every day of the week!
My FAVORITE Ethiopian restaurant in the city. I come here all the time with my husband who is Ethiopian (he's very picky and loves it here too) and we always bring our friends. Amazing and fresh food. Also GLUTEN-FREE options!
Awash is one of our favorites in this neighborhood. The service is friendly, quick, and attentive - they keep the injera coming. We generally polish off the BK special for two and never leave unhappy. Can't wait to go back!
Quite possibly the best Ethiopian place you can find, for more than one reason. First of all: It's not just authentic and tasty, it's also some of the bigger (and hence more fairly priced) portions I've had in any NYC Ethiopian restaurant. For some reason other places skimp out like crazy. Secondly: They have a wider selection of (again) authentic Ethiopian beers. Other places have few and widen the selection with trashy US beer. Third: The wine list is extremely well currated (with actual Ethiopian options) and fitted to the taste and range of a good menu. Awash gets extra points from this dude for having a balanced space with balanced lighting and music volume. Atmosphere! Brooklyn restaurants, it f###### counts! Many other restaurants could take a cue or two from this place. Staff is above and beyond, always nice and on point. Such a pleasant experience. Remember to get the house-made chili-paste/sauce side! Brilliant!
This place has been on my list for so long as everyone raves about it- well it met all expectations! Delicious food, great service and good outdoor setup! We enjoyed 2 share platters between 4 which was a lot of food but not enough left overs for take away. All the food was perfectly cooked and very flavoursome. I can’t wait to go back!
This was the first time eating Ethiopian food and to my amazement it was absolutely amazing. The establishment shows the theme throughout with nice artwork and the drinks were really good. I tried the rough rider (although it came in a smaller glass then I expected it packed a punch.) The food was 9 out of 10. I think I'm giving a 9 because I ordered the steak tartar which specified on the menu that u can get it raw medium or well done and the waitress never asked how we wanted it...and it totally slipped my mind. So we got raw ground steak which tasted lightly cooked but not enough. All in all I loved it and will be going back soon.
Went here today and had a good time. We had the Sambusa appetizer(with chicken) that came with an excellent tangy dipping sauce. The chicken itself is minced. For our entree we got a Vegetarian and Meat platter. The platters comes with a salad and another side which is the chefs choice. We ordered the Gomen, which is collard greens and spices. We also ordered the Awash Tibs which is tender ribeye with a spiced honey sauce. The food came out hot and everything was delicious. Although we didn't have any alcohol they do offer beer and wine happy hour from 5-7p. This place opens at 5p so plan accordingly. Short and sweet, would I recommend this place? Yes!
The food is amazing. Absolutely delicious. And very authentic. Just don’t come on a Saturday night if you don’t like loud noises.
Incredible place, regardless of the exterior look and small size, get ready for the best treat you can have of the authentic Ethiopian cuisine!!!! Extremely tasty, can be spicy if you want! Loved it all 100 times I was there! They also have Ethiopian beer! And even with a note of caramel! Oh, and of course, the Ethiopian coffee with cardamon! Must try! Pleasant prices! Vegan and meat!)
Excellent Ethiopian food, plus a nice selection of Ethiopian honey wines and beers. Terrific mix of meat and veggie dishes with spot-on injera. Service was a bit slow but they were busy the night we dined there; worth the wait, for sure.
The flavors of these traditional Ethiopian dishes are unmatched. The seasoning was deeply complex with tang and spice - which also matches the overall vibe of the place. We stopped in for dinner and loved the decor and cleanliness of the restaurant. We started of with the beef sambusa and were taken aback a little when it came wrapped in phyllo (instead of homemade pastry) - but flaky, buttery and delicious nonetheless! I ordered the Missir (red lentils), Engudai Tibs (mushrooms) and Gomen (collard greens) while she ordered the Doro Wat (chicken in berbere) and Key Sir (red beets). ALL FANTASTIC! It’s a pretty healthy portion and definitely meant for sharing. If fact, they encourage “GURSHA,” the act of taking an injera wrapped portion of food and feeding it to someone at the table as a sign of unity and respect. Overall, the restaurant is a hit with great service and amazing food. Perfect for a date, family/friend sharing or takeout - Awash is a must try and you WILL be back for this truly unique experience.
We go to both restaurants in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Both are amazing ♡♡♡ I think we've tried most of the Ethiopian restaurants in New York, and so far, Awash is the best. Not only for the food, but for the environment, and of course, the service ♡♡♡♡
I’ve been searching for an authentic Ethiopian restaurant in NYC for a year now and I’m excited to say this my favourite thus far. Everything from the staff to the food reminded me of home! Will be back again!
Quiet, cozy, and absolutely exploding in aroma, the vegan sampler is a substantial meal for 2, and potentially for 3 with how generous staff were at providing more of spongey injira bread. Would consider returning when visiting family
This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and it was delicious. The ambiance was nice and the staff was attentive. Would definitely come again.
This restaurant has become my go-to recommendation. I built friendships with the employees, who are terrific and remarkably warm. The chef works with distinctive ingredients to make great food. You can tell they care about food quality. This place deserves every customer it gets.
Incredible restaurant with delicious options for everyone, including vegetarian/vegan. The lentil dishes were my absolute favorite. So much flavor and quite hearty when ordering the platters. Great service here too, servers are attentive and kind. Drinks were a hit, with options for everyone from cocktails to wine/beer. Very good, will be back again and again.
The food here brings people back again and again. The meal was a true pleasure. The employees understand customer needs perfectly. I read good things about this place before visiting. I'm grateful this restaurant is now available.
We have been to Awash 4-5 times and the food and service has always been top notch! We've tried all their platters for 2, as well as well as a few of their entrees and appetizers and everything has been delicious and delivered with a smile. Our dinner and a movie dates are even better now that we have found Awash!
This is one of my 11 year old son’s favorite meals in the neighborhood. He wasn’t the most adventurous eater but the family went here about a year ago and we’ve been back a few times now. We get the Avocado Salad to start and one of the combination platters for the table and everyone’s happy. It’s a nice low key spot. Food is quick but not rushed and it’s a unique dining experience vs something you’d forget. Definitely recommend.
Awash Ethiopian Restaurant was a great experience. Food: delicious and filling! Meat combo had a very filling portion of meats and lentils and veggies with injera. Service: quick and friendly. Restaurant is clean and well-maintained. Atmosphere: quiet and good for a small group. Would have been nice to have some background music or sounds for ambience.
This was a spontaneous visit before getting on the road. It was a warm, cozy experience. The ambiance is absolutely gorgeous along with the food experience. We were treated with kindness and care with good conversation and recommendations. The honey wine was top notch. The food was plentiful and tasty. I loved the sambusa as I’ve always had it with lentils. Theirs includes veggies with a nice consistency. Look forward to returning on purpose and on a spring day. I would enjoy hosting a gathering of some sort here.
Awash was great and really hit the spot since I had not had Ethiopian since pre-Pandemic. I ordered the meat combo for 2. Amazing price for both the quantity and quality of food you get. The lamb was my favorite but honestly every single item was good. We ate everything, including the soaked bread underneath.
Very tasty, just spicy enough. I walked in and asked if I could be out in thirty minutes to catch a movie. She told me "no problem" and guided me to some quick, easy suggestions that mixed meat and vegetables. The did came promptly, was hot and the njira bread was fresh. The music was African rap and hip-hop, like Ice Prince from Nigeria, which added to the vibe. An overall very pleasant, not crowded at 5:00 on a Saturday afternoon, experience.
For my first time eating Ethiopian food I was pleased with how flavorful it was. The chickpeas, salad, and beets were amazing. I wish I could remember the names of other sides from the vegan sampler! However, the lamb shank I had was tough with not much meat to enjoy. Service was ok. Just ok.
My husband and I came here for date night and really enjoyed the experience. The food was well cooked and delicious but not as spicy as I've experienced in other Ethiopian restaurants I've been to before. For me, this was a slight disappointment but I was still able to enjoy all of the food. The environment was trendy, had almost a warehouse feel to it and the walls were covered with beautiful art work. Personally, I would have liked to get more of a traditional feel in the restaurant. Regardless, it was clean and the staff were friendly and attentive.
My go to place for Ethiopian food. I do like the decor changes they made to the restaurant as well. Pleasant waitstaff, good atmosphere and good food. Nice to see the tweaks on the menu as well, adding a wider range for vegetarian/vegans. Recommended.
First time here and it was a wonderful dining experience. The 50/50 cocktail was delicious, consisted of honey wine, a liquor made from pure honey & seltzer. The food was amazing. We ordered the combo which is a great deal. You are able to choose the type of meats you'd like and it will come with a variety of side vegetables - a perfect way to try different flavours. Service was also lovely. Staff was attentive & very friendly. Will most definitely be back again soon! 😍
Very tasty, flavorful and filling Ethiopian food ! Will definitely go back.
Really good Ethiopian food! Excellent service! I just can't give 5 stars because of how expensive it is. Tough to stomach paying almost $30 per person just for food.
My first experience with Ethiopian food and it was a great one! They have traditional honey wine which is a great accompaniment to the spicy food. Also have gluten-free teff available. The combo platters are a great deal and the perfect way to try a bunch of the dishes. Split the meat combo and veggie combo for 2 people and we had plenty of leftovers!
Great food that’s reasonably priced. Came here with a large party and everyone enjoyed their meals. The wait was long once we placed our orders, about an hour, which would be perfectly fine if they gave us a heads up beforehand. Definitely check this place out if you’re in the area.
Awesome Ethiopian food! So delicious and fresh. The restaurant has a very nice ambiance and a cool vibe. I was just a little disappointed by the service. Not very attentive and I felt kind of unwelcome. Almost like we bother her by just being there. Would definitely go back for the food but not for the service.
Delicious Ethiopian food! It's not a 5 star for me because I had slightly better Ethiopian food before. But it is, by all means, delicious here. Service was good, but they seemed a bit understaffed and slower than maybe you'd want it to be . The atmosphere was perfect with really good music.
The food here is great. We had sambusa with mixed vegetables for starter. It was really good, and so was the entree meat platter combo for two. For dessert we tried the raisin rum cake which was fantastic. Their Ethiopian coffee is a little too espresso-y for my taste. The staff is very attentive and nice. Highly recommended!
Never had Ethiopian food and decided to check this place out for a first try. I will say I’m not a fan of the injera but the stewed lamb was nice and tinder, however didn’t like the sauce it was stewed in. The collard greens were great. We started with the vegetable sambusa, really good and the sauce was spicy. Great atmosphere; the waiter was very nice and attentive and checked on us plenty of times. The margarita was also really good and they use decent quality alcohol.
The food was good, but definitely didn't stand out. I've had comparable elsewhere. Where this place really strikes out is in comfort. It's crowded. Tables are small. They barely fit the plate, and the chairs are extremely small and excruciatingly uncomfortable for a person of even modest size. I couldn't wait to finish eating just to get out of the chairs. What good is decent food if you can't enjoy sitting and eating it?
overrated. entrees were too mushy without anything solid and a dish was too bitter. when asked for feedback, we asked if the bitter dish could be modified a little to taste better, but one of the waitresses essentially just said "thats how it's supposed to taste" in response. the restroom is only stocked with dish soap. only a few appetizers were mildly enjoyable. totally not worth the prices
Shady business practices. Watch out for double tipping! There were 5 of us and the menu says $9 for each extra person, so rather than a combo for 4 plus $9, they charged us for a combo for 4 and a combo for 1 which was an extra $20. Tips are included in the bill, but the credit card receipt suggests a tip. Finally, they took our reservation, but when we showed up, we had to wait 20 minutes. Food is excellent, but this was disappointing.
I’ve lived in Ethiopia for a short while years back, so knew what to expect with the food. The injera here is just way too sour and not edible and everything else much too salty. Tried to wash down the food with many glasses of water. Hard pass on this spot.
Came to this restaurant with some friends from out of town, we saw a rave reviews but unfortunately if I could give ZERO stars I would! After we sat down our food came which looked very good, but this place was crawling with roaches! They were all over the walls and coming out from behind paintings absolutely unbelievable! The waitress sent over the bus boy who was whipping the roaches away from our table, this was beyond unprofessional! Imagine the dining room look like this what could the kitchen possibly look like! I would never ever recommend anyone to dine here! Do not waste your time if you were concerned about your health…Because I was literally vomiting almost immediately. I can’t believe the amount of good reviews based on my experience. Definitely PASS on this one, there are plenty of nice restaurants in the surrounding area that would be happy to have your business.
Been on a little Ethiopian food tour around NYC and this was my 4th restaurant and this was by far the worst one hands down not even close, the other ones tasted like Jesus made it himself. Meat was super tough and bland, vegetables were not seasoned. Don’t think they used berbere on anything. The injera was great but they might as well save money and have us pick up our own food because the service was non existent. I’ve been in the restaurant industry for 15 years they never came back to the table once except take the order and drop the check. Too busy on their phones. No wonder it was empty. They don’t even have ice. First time tipping less then 30% Edit: wrote this on the wrong location I meant the one in Manhattan, my apologies
I was very disappointed! Be careful before you go as the waitress speaks poor English. She couldn't comprehend our questions! I personally asked her 3 times to make sure the food is not spicy. She ended up bringing us very spicy food! She never apologized. Then they started cooking other food to replace it and when it was finally ready the meat was as tough as rubber! Poor customer service!
Only opens for dinner. Never opens for lunch. Always puts too much spice inside of the raw beef the Indian one instead of the Ethiopian one leaving it with a gross minty flavor overpowering the dish
AVOID this place - I called in advance of ordering to explain that I’m gluten free and so would need gluten free injera (most authentic and good quality injera is gluten free naturally but apparently not here), the restaurant said I just had to add the request in the notes. When I placed the order, they then called to say they couldn’t give me gluten free injera because I hadn’t paid extra for it (despite their being no option on the menu to pay extra for it). They told me I had to place a separate order for $4.50 in order to get ONE gluten free injera (for reference, all of their dishes come with 2 injera). When I informed them that would be below the minimum order and would cost me money in delivery etc they just told me there was nothing they could do (which seems ridiculous as all restaurants can add on extras on their end). They then told me they would cancel a main ($20) so I could get some gluten free injera - so ridiculous! It’s a pancake and they were trying to charge me $20 to get it when it’s FREE with their dishes. Zero accommodation for dietary needs, rude staff who don’t communicate well at all. I had to cancel the order myself because they apparently couldn’t do it. Just avoid if you don’t want a headache.
