Iconic spot in Alhambra and defintely one that i will truly miss when i move out of california! The pastrami and the onion rings are always outstanding and so worth the price and i love ❤️!
Amazing mid-century aesthetics. Cheap and delicious burgers. Fries are nothing to write home about but they’re super generous with ‘em. One of the best burgers I’ve had in a while. Places like this made this city fast food famous. 100% worth hitting.
After getting off work late and being absolutely starving, this place once again saved my night. There weren’t many food options open nearby, so I stopped by here to grab something quick—and honestly, it never disappoints. I’ve been here a few times already, and this combo has become my go-to order. The portion is very generous, loaded with flavor, and perfect when you’re seriously hungry after a long day. The meat is tender and well-seasoned, the fries soak up all the sauce, and everything just works together really well. It’s messy in the best way possible and definitely hits the spot. What I really like is the consistency. Every time I come back, the quality is solid and the food tastes just as good as I remember. It’s comforting, filling, and feels like real satisfaction food—not something that leaves you hungry an hour later. If you’re looking for a late meal, something hearty, or just a reliable comfort food option after work, I highly recommend this combo. I’ll definitely keep coming back whenever I need a satisfying meal like this.
Service was very quick at this location AND they accepted my HAT gift card! This location is 15mins further than the Temple City location I usually go to...so I'd also have to order a bit more to make the drive worthwhile ... was worth it.
This place does really have amazing pastrami. It’s thin, tasty, fresh, plenty of meat, not too much fatty parts, and it comes with French roll and mustard and pickles and dip. Nice and simple. The pastrami meat is really good. Usually the texture of pastrami is thicker and more fleshy but this is so yummy because it’s just slivers and I love it! Outdoors seating and free parking. Totally worth the trip to stop here.
Outdoor seating, old school diner feel. The food was amazing. My boyfriend and I got the wet fries, roast beef au jus and the steak sandwich. The roast beef sandwich was decent, the meat was very tender and easy to chew but it was a little salty. The steak sandwich was delicious! I would come back to this place just for this sandwich. The portions were decent for the price and the staff were very friendly.
Came about 30 minutes after they opened, heard it can get busy quickly here. Service was friendly and fast. Food was amazing, the chili cheese fries were so good, and a really big portion. Sandwich was out of this world, i love pastrami, and this place has good pastrami for sure. Definitely recommend this place if you have never been before.
The wet fries were wonderful. The gravy was nice and they give you quite a lot for the price of roughly $7. As for the pastrami, loaded with meat. Extremely good tasting. There is a decent amount of seats and the kitchen is open so you can see them cooking fresh meat right in front of you. Would recommend. 5 stars
Always ordered the chili fries here and today came in to try the turkey and ham with added cheddar cheese on sourdough. It was so fresh tasting and soft that I loved it! The only thing I'd advise is if and when adding cheddar cheese, just know it's shredded cheese, not slices. They do hook it up with a lot of cheese, though. Too bad we don't have these in Colorado it's one of those good distinguishing tastes. Definitely give them a try, especially the pastrami. Only negative here is no inside seating. That's not a big deal for me, but no restrooms is. All good, tho!
A long time favorite and still holds the bar high for pastrami sandwiches. Still the spot after 25 years of coming here. Tasty pastrami and great chili cheese fries. They have lots of other items hut this is always my go-to here. Great fot sharing (or not), but the food sizes are still very big. When I used to come as a teenager I could eat a whole pastrami sandwich and chili cheese fries all by myself, now I have to share the fries with my 3 kids to put a dent in them. Will keep coming back. If you've never been, give it a try, you won't be disappointed. For those that haven't been in a very long time. They now have a larger parking area in the back as well as a seating area in the back with bench style tables.
Retro corner shop serving sandwiches, burgers, and other hot food. ---------- Wet Fries with Gravy Grade: A- I don't know what kind of stock they use for the gravy but the flavor is phenomenal. A little on the salty side but not too bad when you spread it out over the fries. The portion size is also massive ---------- Pastrami Dip Grade: C- The smokiness of the pastrami is good but it is really salty. I don't know if it's the pastrami itself or the au jus but the salt overpowers the rest of the flavor.
This was first time I went there, the food was delightful and filling. The chili fries are listed as a side but it's far from it. The service was subpar but I didn't expect good service anyways they got the job done no hiccup. The hotdogs come with relish 🤮 def ask to remove, if it's not in your taste. Chili dogs have onions, tomatoes and pickles added and were surprisingly delicious. The grilled cheese was loved by the children on sourdough bread and grilled perfectly 🤤. Although it didn't appear as so the turkey burger was better than expected. Took a star away simply due to the actual customer service. Food cools down fast, Definitely eat there at the provided tables!
Used to live in Alhambra for 50+ years and would eat there quite often. I was there today (2/6/26) and decided to get some food, so the Hat it is. Was truly disappointed by the service and atmosphere. Apparently the gentleman taking the orders doesn’t like change as part of the payment completely ignored what I said. Atmosphere people drinking beer and playing some type of vulgar music while I was eating! Food was disappointing as well. They used to load up the chili cheese fries but here you don’t get enough to even cover the fries. Wow how disappointing to fall so far from the Hat that used to be! BTW I’ve eaten at other Hat locations and they have provided excellent service and food don’t know what happened to Alhambra the original restaurant!
Ordered the chili cheese pastrami fries ($19.99 w/tax). They were ok. The portion is definitely big, very shareable.
Was in the area and wanted to try before going back to LA. Thought they’d have a bathroom to wash hands and pee but they didn’t have a bathroom for customers. Food was good but they didn’t have big bags for to go orders. A bit disappointed. Bring a bag when planning a big to go purchase.
They serve you alot thats for sure for chili and pastrami. There is not much flavor going on besides the chili being very hot. I wouldnt care to come back its not like this place has the best chili or pastrami both dont have much flavor i tried a pastrami burger at a different location tbh same thing. Its cheap food for your money thats about it
NOT the best pastrami, by far. the pastrami was dry, lacked flavor. tastes more like bland ham. it tasted good AFTER you add mustard, ketchup, pickles, etc. but alone. no. the chili cheese fries bomb but without the pastrami. the burger delicious, without the pastrami though. i recommend getting both without pastrami, therefore the 3 stars.
My co-worker and I went there for lunch on a Wednesday in enough time to beat the lunch rush. We ordered a large onion ring, hamburger, pastrami, and 2 sodas to eat-in, as well as, a steak sandwich and 2 pastramis to go. Needless to say, we were disappointed in the food (maybe a bad day in the middle of the week). The burger my co-worker had she said was dry, overcooked and not much flavor, my pastrami was not loaded with meat, as they do at the Rancho Cucamonga location, and the bread was tougher than usual. The onion rings were good, but they do not offer self-service on the hot chili peppers or the soda. I was unpleasantly surprised at this visit at this location, and don't think we'll patronize it again on our lunch-break coming from downtown L.A. I tried to contact the corporate office to leave my commentary, but the website does not offer the option to do so. If management reads this post, please do better for your customers or you will no longer have any.
