When you want a restaurant where you can depend on the quality of the food and the excellence of the service, this is the place to go in Syracuse. The ambiance is great, and I have never been disappointed in my meal. If you are hungry, start with an appetizer such as their delicious French onion soup. Then visit the salad bar (see update below) where you will find excellent self-carved dark and light bread and fresh greens. Add-ons include artichoke hearts, beets, chickpeas, onions, pepperoncini, croutons and crumbled bacon. A variety of dressings is offered. They start preparing your entree only when you visit the salad bar, so you have plenty of time to enjoy your salad. The steaks are excellent and arrive cooked to the degree you requested. Their baked potatoes are always perfect. They offer a variety of desserts, but I always order the raspberry cream which has been on the menu since the '70s. I'm as susceptible as anyone else to trying the new restaurants in town, but I always go back the Scotch & Sirloin. POST PANDEMIC UPDATE: Unfortunately, the menu is much more limited than it was pre-pandemic. They no longer offer the top sirloin or the raspberry cream. The most regrettable loss is the salad bar. This is understandable in view covid, but instead of including a side salad with entrees, you now have to pay $10 or more for a salad, dispite the fact that the prices of entrees have been increased. The service and ambiance are still excellent, but we may not be dining at this restaurant as often as we have in the past. UPDATE-2: When my daughter returns to Syracuse, the first place she wants to go is this restaurant. It not only has great food but also great nostalgic value. UPDATE-3: The acorn squash is not what it used to be. I'd skip it. UPDATE-4: As is our custom, we went here for an early dinner on New Year's Eve with close friends. The service was not up to its normal standards. My friend ordered a glass of the house white wine. The waiter brought a glass of the house red. After the food was served, no one returned to our table to see if everything was okay. Unfortunately, everything was not okay. One of the dishes delivered was room-temp risotto with room-temp nearly-raw scallops. The recipient decided she would take the meal home and cook it as leftovers. Consequently, she spent the meal watching the rest of us eat. Halfway through my meal, I was able to catch the attention of our waiter and ask him to bring the ketchup and A1 sauce I had requested when I ordered. Obviously, this is not normal for this restaurant and may have been due to understaffing on a night when every table was taken. UPDATE-5: Return to the Scotch when my daughter returned to Syracuse for the holidays. I ordered a bowl of French onion soup and the top sirloin steak with french fries. My daughter had the large prime rib and my wife ordered a meatball appetizer and the scallop special. For the most part, we enjoyed our meals, but one glitch was that my wife had requested no salt added to her scallops because she's on a restricted salt diet. However they arrived quite salty.
Only sat in the bar area, the round fireplace is a wonderful, warm place to grab a great cocktail that is a wonderful atmosphere. Didnt stay for dinner, will give that a try next time. There were at least 6 other cars waiting in the parking lot for it to open, and the bar was immediately busy. Ill Def be back to try again for a steak.
We've been going to the Scotch n Sirloin since my father first took me in the 1980's. I haven't been there recently since about a year & a half & we saw a couple "less than 5star" reviews. Our anniversary was Saturday & Scotch was a first thought. I called for a reservation & he was friendly & asked if it was an occasion. I confirmed it was our 28th anniversary. Anyway, the service was great not just good. They were attentive wo hovering, a skill that most wait staffs should learn. We had a NY Strip special & prime rib & lobster...All medium and everything was cooked to perfection. After dinner we were getting ready to go(we passed on desert bc we ate everything) and out comes a sundae w a candle. Simple, small but perfectly thoughtful & discreet. We really appreciated that small simple gesture. For my money Scotch continues to be THE steakhouse in Syracuse, NY . Thanks Scotch!
Everything was delicious. Steaks cooked perfectly as I remember. Last one still open I think. Please don’t close this location. A lot of loyal customers in Buffalo are very sad we lost this restaurant. Now I will make the drive once a year with my family to support this one. Please support this place and keep it going! ❤️
My wife & I had an amazing dinner with steaks cooked to perfection! The atmosphere & waiter were excellent also. We sat in the Bistro area that encompasses a huge fire pit. I can just visualize in the winter time the heat that would put out. The decor in the restaurant is also very inviting & cozy. Highly recommend Scotch & Sirloin to all diners looking to have an enjoyable evening with a fantastic meal too! I post a must deserving 5 star review. We will be returning again soon for another enjoyable evening!😊
Our Scotch n Sirloin back in Buffalo closed a few years ago so we decided to make the trek here ! We had been to this location back in the late 80s when my wife went to school at SU… upon arrival it looked the same! I hope the current owners can do something about the tired and worn exterior and get rid of the artificial Christmas tree branches in the planter and tell the owner of the closed credit union next door to cut the lawn! We were hoping for better inside and it was! Stepped inside to a classic American steak house! Our steaks were cooked perfectly! My wife got the 7oz filet and I got the 16oz bone in ribeye- both super tasty. The accompanying sauces were an added bonus! Baked potato and green beans performed and hot upon arrival. Wine list is substantial and varied prices and selections. Service was excellent- attentive and friendly. Owners please fix up the exterior of the building!!!! You wouldn’t want to discourage people from coming in!!!
High end steak house with a somewhat limited menu. We sat inside in the dining room, but they offered outdoor seating along with a lounge option. Very extensive liquor menu. Although we were there to celebrate Lisa's birthday, neither of us sampled the liquor. When I made the reservation the gentleman asked if we were celebrating anything, and I told him. The picture on this review is of the lovely dessert they brought us. It looks like a flower. It was vanilla and mint chocolate chip ice creams with whipped cream, and delicious. We both had beef options - the sirloin for me, and the filet for her. Both were perfectly cooked and drained just right. Lisa reports that the mashed potatoes that accompanied her dish were the best she's ever had, and I had to agree. I chose the steak fries, which were wedges, and also fantastic. To start we had the French onion soup, also delicious - not too salty with just the right amount of onions. In a romantic twist, we went there 19 years ago for our first date. Highly recommend. Dinner for two, with soup but no drinks was a little more than $100, but worth every penny.
The food was excellent. The service could have been better. The team of servers seemed very bothered when asked questions and during a conversation at my table (that sat 8 of us) a male server was listening in and was rolling his eyes while making despicable facial expressions. As soon as he saw that 2 of us noticed it he did not come back to our table. The bus boy at the salad bar was so helpful and pleasantly polite. I would definitely come back for the food. I just hope the attitude of the servers changes. And they use their manners while reaching over my plate to get my empty glass Update: WONDERFUL! SERVERS WERE AWESOME!!! DESSERT (CHOCOLATE PB PIE) WAS GREAT!!!
My husband and I went here for our first anniversary, and it was lovely! My husband got the teriyaki steak (delicious!) with sweet potato fries (done to perfection!) and chocolate peanut butter pie for dessert (so peanut buttery!). I got the linguini primavera (so flavorful!) and the creme brulee for dessert (ahh SO good!). The lighting was somewhat on the dark side, but our table was lit by its own overhead lamp, as many of the tables are, which was very helpful. I, for one, enjoyed the mood lighting. We let them know it was our anniversary ahead of time and they gave us a sweet little dessert with candles on it and the words “happy anniversary”, which was so nice! The staff were very pleasant and extremely helpful, especially with all the questions and requests we had! 😂 I would definitely recommend this restaurant!
The steak was cooked to perfection—tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. I had the filet mignon, and it was one of the best I’ve had. The sides, like the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach, were excellent and complemented the steak well. The service was top-notch, with attentive staff who made the experience even more enjoyable. The atmosphere was elegant yet relaxed, making it a great spot for a special evening out. It's a bit on the pricier side, but definitely worth it for the quality of the food and service.
The food was good, but my prime rib was over cooked. Also, if you want a vegetable with your meal, you need to pay extra. The wait staff was phenomenal 👏
Atmosphere was great. Started with oysters on half shell & escargot & Wedge salad before our entrees. I ordered a bone-in ribeye steak that was good, but not "aged" good. Somewhat tough to be honest. But tasty. Our desserts, cheesecake and pecan pie were mediocre at best. Would I go again though? Yes.
Place doesn’t look like much from outside but the inside has a really cool almost medieval vibe. Steak was great and the beer was cold. Price was pretty high, but the service was great. Definitely worth a try.
Absolutely love the ambiance and atmosphere of this establishment! This first time I went was for my 32nd birthday I ordered the grilled chicken and tiger shrimp pasta in a white wine sauce, terrible and an outstanding lobster tail, my spouse ordered the Filet Mignon and lobster tail which was superb. The second was for my 33rd birthday I ordered grilled Faroe Island salmon which was disappointing to say the least. So we'll just stick with the steak and lobster.
Service and atmosphere was great. Prices and food itself was mid. Potatoes were served cold. For the price we paid for the dishes I was expecting more. Porterhouse wasn't horrible but wasn't the best steak I've had.
I showed up 5 minutes early with my gf 19 me 18. The host was nice and seated us in a corner. The host was a younger kid who was in my high school. The waitress (~45) with her crazy plastic surgery handed us menus and immediately asked us about appetizers and we said we didn’t know yet and her follow up was to ask us what we wanted to eat when we haven’t even opened the menus. She had an attitude about her that said she wanted us gone from the restaurant from the start. She came back every 2 minutes to ask us what we wanted to eat until we had decided 10 minutes later. Once we got the food, my top serloin was tougher than a grandma in a biker bar. Was obviously put on the back of the grill, burnt on the outside and definitely not medium rare. The guy who brought out the food (~42) seemed like he really didn’t want to be talking to us and dropped the food and left with minimal words. Me and my date got curious as to if the waitress was just having a bad night but she seemed very interested in the other older customers in the restaurant even asking them about topics in their conversations that she had walked up on. She asked us how our food was going which is standard and she had a scowl, I obviously don’t want to be a Karen and tell her it’s bad so I said good and she just walked away without even saying that’s great. That was the last time we talked to her, a younger woman (~22) came to get our plates with a smile and kindness and brought our check. I always loved coming here as a kid but now that I went for the first time without my family I do think there was age discrimination. Younger people tip too, I normally give 20% but for the service I was given I gave 65 dollars to cover a 61.58 bill. I feel it was deserved. Will not be returning.
Very disappointed in our food and quality of meat. I acknowledge we arrived late to our reservation. But the chef clearly sent us a message. We asked if it was too late to be seated (8:15) I would have preferred to have been told no then receive the quality of food served. Ordered 2 NY strips, medium rare. Served blue, one of them very tough with lots of gristle. We debated sending them back because I hate to be that kind of customer but they were too blue. Still on the cusp of rare upon returned from the grill. Wife had me finish cooking hers at home. I called the following day to mention this feedback and overall the owners responce took no value in the feedback and largely ignored the feedback due to “we are an old school steakhouse.” Not my first steakhouse, sir…. He offered a gift certificate - but was not seeking compensation. I refused as there is no need to revisit this establishment- a vestige of a steakhouse that once carried a name. Many other note worthy steakhouse around town. That being said waitstaff, bartender, and atmosphere is on point, but not worth $200 for two for a tough steak and cold potatoes. Picture is steak after being sent back.
