Was my last stop for breakfast before leaving SF. The food was so good, large portions, this is the place to go if u craving mexican. Great food, real traditional flavors
The food was delicious affordable prices nice family environment
Every SF native knows this is one of the best Mexican restaurants in San Francisco. Authentic, delicious, wonderful service. Family owned and a staple. I could eat here every day. Love this spot. Can’t go wrong with anything you order.
Great seevice and good guad food chilaquiles omg
I was just tooling around minding my own business when I spotted the San Jalisco Mexican Restaurant, so I called my pal Triple E LeakPeeler to join me in some tacos de Birria, he was all in, and just 5 minutes away at his family's Chartarossa factory. Man-O-Man were those tacos great! 5 stars all day long. ☆☆☆☆☆
OMG SOOOOO DELICIOUS!! Everytime we go they never let us down. I'm the having the Camrones Suiza Marina!! YUMMY YUMMY TO MY TUMMY!!! I always feel at home. The atmosphere is so incredibly amazing!! A sweet taste of Mexico in sf. They have some of the most authentic food I've had since I lived in Texas. The plates are nicely positioned with food. Not too much not too little. This place always has my love.
Food was outstanding! Decor was fun and so full of culture. A gem.
Absolute hidden gem, I have no idea how this place has hidden in plain sight from me for so many years! Breakfast served all day, around five choices of chilaquiles alone!! I had the latest, emiliano's chilaquiles.
Oh gosh, it's always a dilemma when you really enjoy yourself. Do you tell your secrets or you keep them to yourself?! I guess it's only fair that I share. San Francisco has many fine Mexican restaurants, no doubt but this one has everything all in one. They have homestyle food, with a fun ambiance and great sangria. You will probably have to wait for a seat but it's worth it.
This is the best authentic, well-priced restaurant. The food is top notch! The flavors are amazing and as stated AUTHENTIC! Service is excellent. Restaurant is clean. You don’t feel like your wallet has been raped like other places as of late. You get plenty for the money. I love this place!
Ran into this place as we were driving by. We decided to give this place a shot. Omg this was the best decision we made for dinner!!! Everything was delicious as well as customer service!!!!! We ordered chicken Milanesa and birria seca. Super yummy and one of the best foods we have ever had. Home made tortillas topped it off. Definitely recommend this place if you want authentic Mexican food.
SanJalisco was a great surprise. This is by far the BEST and Authentic Jalisco Mexican food in San Francisco. The restaurant decor was unique. We were warmly greeted by the manager, Margarita, who was efficient and so pleasant. We ordered as an appetizer Choriqueso with Flour Tortillas...a standout! The crispy sides with the chewy queso matched the flavorful Chorizo. For main course We ordered the Carne Asada...thick cut and Medium Rare. It was the BEST Carne Asada we have ever tasted...hands down. For my main a ordered the appetizer Trio. It came with two Fried Tacos, two Chicken Flautas with an awesomely delicious Mole sauce and a huge creamy Salad on top of crispy tortilla. As a bonus Margarita gave me a side soup with vegetables and meat...as I mistakenly thought it came with a hot soup. The Trio combination appetizer was a knockout! Service was quick, warm and super efficient. As a plus, the restroom was very clean and well stocked! I only wish they had a "mild" salsa as it was too spicy for me. We WILL be back for sure! And to those that have not tried SanJalisco...you are missing out...for sure!
While travelling through California from Europe, we learned that if we want to be sure to get really good food quality for a decent price, we should head to the Mexican restaurant. SanJalisco is the point in case, large portions (we took away half of our food), delicious food and drinks, very friendly staff. When you see local Mexican people dining there, you know it’s good! Recommending to tourists visiting San Francisco as well!
Authentic Mexican food in a colorful setting with friendly service. Get chicken soup or daily special. Also their Micheladas are cold and tasty. Talented guitarist and singer Jorge comes in to play guitar and sing which nicely adds to ambiance. Worth walking over here. Neighborhood is safe. Very reasonable prices.
Great place. Food is fantastic and the ambiance is lovely. I had Lupes Special, a chicken in spicy sour cream sauce. Delicious!
SanJalisco is the best Mexican food I’ve ever eaten… and I’m writing this from Mexico. Seriously. My best friend is an SF native who grew up in the neighborhood and has been going here her whole life. She took me here a year ago and I keep finding excuses to come back— even though I do not live anywhere near SF. My regular order has quickly become the Chilaquiles Remo (with chicken and egg). I dream about them. But everything that I’ve tasted here has been delicious. (The soups rotate daily and should be tried.) It’s family owned. The staff is friendly. The food is inexpensive. And they serve breakfast all day. What are you waiting for? Are you in the car yet?
Cute spot with big plates. Kind servers and very attentive. Chips and salsa as soon as we sat down. I had the flautas and they were very good
Excellent authentic food in a very boisterous Tijuana-taxi esque environment. Got the tres combinacion with chili relleno. Best chili relleno I’ve had in many years with a great piping hot sauce on top. Pinto beans were amazing as were tortillas. Recommended
Been coming here to have “breakfast/brunch meetings” for better than 10 years & it remains one of my absolute favorite places to eat in the city. Desayunas so good, it’ll make you sing & more varieties of chilaquiles than I’ve seen anywhere & the portions are so generous, I almost always leave with a to-go box w/ some for later. Heaven on South Van Ness. 9.5/10 Would eat here for the rest of my life.
This is by far the best Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco. The food has been consistently wonderful for the more than 35 years I’ve been coming here. Everything on the menu is flavorful and authentic. This morning I had the Chile Verde with eggs and it was melt in your mouth delicious! I live in Southern California now, so I don’t get here very often, but San Jalisco is better than anywhere else I’ve ever been. Thank you to the owners for continuing your commitment to quality, service and a wonderful experience every time!
Was introduced to this place by a friend a few years ago. Now, every time I am in the city and want a taste of home, this is the spot. Fresh hand-made tortillas, and the yummy breakfast options are always my fave. I absolutely LOVE the machaca omelette which includes shredded beef, eggs, and onion...oooh and the café de oya (coffee with cinnamon).
We stopped for a late breakfast/early lunch. My cousins and their family have been eating at this place for decades, so it's obviously a favorite for locals. The atmosphere and food are authentic Mexican, which is an experience in itself. My sister and I shared a huge plate of chili rejellnos with rice & beans YUMMM!!!! My cousins had goat birria and chilaquiles, both of which looked delicious. If you're in the area and want to try some authentic Mexican food, CHECK IT OUT!
San Jalisco takes me right back to my mother’s kitchen ❤️ The chilaquiles are exceptional — perfectly crisp, smothered in rich red salsa, and full of that same love and care my mom used to put into every breakfast. 🍳 As a kid, chilaquiles con queso were my comfort dish — my mother could turn simple ingredients into magic. She was quick in the kitchen and always knew exactly what she was doing… and so does San Jalisco. 🌶️✨
Here is my review of the San Jalisco Mexican Restaurant. San Jalisco has the ingredients of success. Most definitely the food is authentic, freshly made, and plentiful. Our service was outstanding and friendly. The location is perfectly away from the chaos of Mission Street. San Jalisco is a great date night restaurant.
What a great restaurant we stumbled upon while in The Mission District. The decor is so much fun. Bright and cheerful. We were greeted, seated and our order was promptly. We enjoyed our cold beers and our food arrived quickly. The first bite brought me back to my childhood; my grandmother’s kitchen. The tortillas were made fresh and the flavors of the carnitas was superb!!! I WILL BE BACK!!
Authentic Mexican restaurant located in the mission district. Very friendly staff and food was delicious. Get ready for very large portion! So make sure to avoid too many dishes. The service was very fast and although I found a queue of 6 people, it took only 20 minutes to get served. If you love Mexican food, this is a place you cannot miss when in San Francisco
Great portion sizes, yummy food, big menu and lots of options. Takes a little while to order meal but it was well worth the wait. STAFF seems laid-back but attentive enough. Definitely will be back!!
Atmosphere is good - authentic Mexican. Food is really very mediocre, would not go definitely to this place. The only good things were salsa and guacamole. Beef buritto was just the worst I ever had and could even imagine
Great food, excellent service. I had the veg burrito and my partner had the pork burrito. Both were good, large portions. I also liked the salsa. The only issue for me was that it smells really yuck down the hallway and they over compensate in the bathroom with air freshener and candles. Hilarious giant panties on the ceiling. The take-home containers are microwave safe and really sturdy, seem potentially reusable.
First time going there today, I got the Chorizo and eggs breakfast meal. Not to thrill with their Chorizo im used to it having almost like a sausage texture and the rice wasn't any flavor at all, a little bit salty. It came with homemade tortillas which is a plus. Will come back again and try different foods.
Nothing better for a hangover Sunday than a birria and fresh made tortillas. with of course an ice cold Mexican beer. Place gets pretty busy so be prepared to wait. Like all good things you must wait. A little note for owners/ managers I removed the fifth star due to Restroom conditions, they could be cleaner and in better shape. all else is great.
The service=⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The place. =⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thé vive. =⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The food. =⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ No wonder why people love this place, I just came in today to try Dia Chilaquiles with Kearny Asada which were extremely great except for the fact that they come bright onions were extremely raw, nothing that cannot be fixed of course, but this is a very nice place with a very nice environment under decoration really matches with the location. I’m definitely coming back to try more of their menu.
Great vibes at the restaurant. Came around 6 on a Saturday and did not have to wait. Everyone gets a free order of salsa and chips which were really flavorful and fresh. We ordered a rainbow trout dish which I thought was slightly disappointing. Nothing super flavorful but still good portions, would probably try something different next time. Also got the Birria lamb soup. Super flavorful and really meaty. Feels very heavy to eat as a soup as it is a lot of meat, but still good. Got the leche flan to finish off which was good for the price. Overall, good value and good vibes.
3.5/5 Decent food. Friendly service. Like the interior. They accommodated my request for a side of nopales which was pretty good. I’ve tried: - Flautas: good, not great - Nopales: very good - OJ Mimosas: very good - free chips and salsa: pretty good Again nothing truly remarkable but I would come back for friend service and atmosphere.
Went with my wife and 2 friends. The food was okay. Not much flavor and not what I expected from a Mexican restaurant in SF. The chips and salsa were better than my carnitas burrito. The service was not good at all. The waitress took our order, brought our food and drinks, and never came back. My Coke was empty and never refilled. The ambiance was cool. It wasn't too loud, and they had music playing in the background. Overall, though, I wouldn't return to try anything else.
Really hit and miss. I appreciate the hand made tortillas. I love the weekend Menudo... outside of that the food is mediocre at best. I ordered a sope and an enchilada this time around and the meat on the sope was grey and sad honestly could barely pass as a sope... no tenía ni crema ni queso... the enchilada was OK. Overall the food was kind of bland. Huge disappointment considering their menudo is actually pretty good.
My son ate birria here and recommended this place. I took my brother for his birthday lunch and we both ordered birria. Mine came with ribs and more than half the plate was bone and fat. I called a waitress and pointed it out to her. She said I had ordered the ribs birria, which I had not. It was extremely dissapointing and I didn't get an apology nor a discount was offered. I will not be going back.
The place is nice, good service. However, the food is just fine. Not bad, decent portion sizes, but nothing really stands out flavor wise. The burrito is OK, very dense tortilla and bland filling. Some unique stuff like lamb birria soup that was pretty good, but also not super memorable. Many better mexican spots you can try out in the mission.
Unfortunately, this was the worst burrito I've had in San Francisco. The steak was just ground beef. It was almost flavorless. The service and decor was really nice and I really want to like this place, but it just did not hit
We were in the mood for menudo, and after reading the mass amounts of reviews we decided to try. We had to wait over 30 minutes for a table, and we ordered Jamaica and a Michelada to start, which both excellent. Next the menudo came out, but we realized it did not have any hominy in the soup, so we had to ask for it to be added. I’ve never been served menudo without hominy, so we thought it was bizarre. Fortunately it tasted excellent. She had a combination plate with flautas and a carne asada taco. Overall it was a mediocre experience, despite the large amount of reviews and long wait times.
This was our first time visiting the restaurant. We thought the food was delicious. I had the flautus. It comes with a side of rice and beans and homemade tortillas. My partner had the flank steak omelette, it was delicious but a little salty. We were definitely a little disappointed in the service, we waited a very long time for our check, and there was also a big piece of plastic in my dish. I brought it up to the server, not asking for a refund or anything. Just wanted to let them know in case it came off of the utensil. They were using in the kitchen and she kind of brushed it off. Unfortunately, I don’t think we will be returning.
Disappointing experience. All the dishes are slightly worse than expected. The bierria goat soup is too acidic. The Roy's fish tacos are tasted like nothing. Fried plantains are decent. The micheladas were excellent though. Restaurant is small, there was a slight wait on Friday during peak hours
Was excited to try chilaquiles here after heading this was a great Mexican restaurant. Was extremely disappointed. The green sauce tasted like gravy rather than a flavorful tomatillo or jalapeno or avocado based green sauce that I would expect for a Salsa Verde. The chicken was not flavorful at all and generally found the plate to just be.... flavorless slop. I really wish I liked it more but I was really disappointed.
We arrived here and waited about 20-25 minutes to be seated because they were full and had a waitlist (no problem, we were willing to stay as this made us think it was going to be a great experience as witnessed by its popularity). Once sat, it took almost 10 minutes to put in a drink order. We attempted to also order an appetizer but were told no, that another waitress would take our order. Another 15 minutes pass by in which the table of 3 who were seated after us already had their drinks and food-we still haven't been able to even order at this point. I flagged a waitress down who was cleaning another table and asked to order; she wad pleasant and said someone would be right with us. We ordered and the person who assisted us was friendly. Maybe 10 minutes pass by and my partner's food came out. Mine never showed and nobody ever came back to our table to deliver it or explain what was going on (I ordered mole enchiladas-not something that takes an extended amount of time to prepare). Finally 15 minutes later I flagged a other waitress down who sent over the original waitress, telling me there was a mistake with my order so they were remaking it. I was extremely annoyed at this point as the service was absolutely not there for such a popular place. I forgot to mention, the earlier table being cleaned was already full of two patrons who were drinking & eating their food yet I was still waiting. This was two tables that were sat right after and far after us who were promptly served. My enchiladas come out soon after and everything looked great except for the tomatoes that I'd requested off. My partner enjoyed his fish tacos aside from the lack of sauce and repeated requests for limes. The ambiance is special and the decor is nice, but the overall service (mainly lack thereof) is what prompts this negative review. It's worthy to note that the presumed 'regulars' visiting this restaurant were taken care of with speedy service (waitresses hugging & conversing with patrons) while we never even got a single drink refill.
It was difficult for me to write this review due to the fact that I wanted to make sure I knew what I was writing about because I take a review very serious We went to this restaurant about two weeks ago, and I noticed the service it caught my attention a lot So we decided to go back again, and I wanted to make sure it wasn’t just me It was the same scenario with the service? Not one time where we greeted when we entered Not one time where we offered refills on our water Not one time where we offered tortillas which by the way, are handmade and are delicious. The food was good . And I understand that a lot of people are probably gonna say all the restaurant was busy while it wasn’t busy .
Disappointing experience. I can’t recommend San Jalisco, especially as the meal made me ill. I stopped in on a whim, hopeful due to the busy dining room. When I asked if the mole was good—a reasonable benchmark—the server confidently said yes. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. 8-48 hours later, I have all the worst symptoms of foodborne illness such as salmonella, norovirus or E. coli. Given my previous meals were all strictly home-cooked or packaged snacks, the mole dish likely caused this, suggesting improper food handling and bacterial contamination. Even without illness, the dish disappointed. The mole was thin, overly sweet, and chocolate-dominant, lacking complexity and depth. The chicken was fatty and gristly, prompting speculation from a friend who tasted it that it wasn’t even chicken. The imbalanced dish featured excess sauce, minimal starch, and a sad side salad with limp lettuce, an unappetizingly soggy tomato slice and pale radish. Chips arrived cold with bland, watery salsa. Refills came for salsa but oddly not for water or chips. My bottled Mexican Coke cost an excessive $5.20—twice retail price. It was rung up as a “refresca Mexicana” instead of a soft drink. Given dishes run $22–$40 with tax, this quality and experience are unacceptable. Many other local Mexican restaurants or taquerías offer far better value. If better menu options existed, staff guidance should have pointed me toward them—but the indifferent service matched the lackluster meal.
I know this is petty as hell but I once got into an argument with one of the owners, who started insulting me for my weight and attitude (I am neurodivergent and I was 14 at the time) and now every time I take my grandma there she looks at me like she wants me dead
This place is beyond disappointing. The chicken mole had to much cinnamon The beans had to much salt The fajitas was very tough and zero flavors They came with no sour cream or guacamole! The red enchilada sauce tasted like tomato sauce Forgot to bring out one plate and made the excuse they are busy while everyone else had their food for15 minutes at our table The chips were stale NO MARGARITAS! What Mexican restaurant doesn’t have margaritas?! LAME!!!!!
