Came here for breakfast with a friend before taking her to the airport. They were open early, and had outdoor seating, so it was the perfect location. The staff was all really friendly. The matcha was really tasty (can be rare). The food was really fresh and tasty, and I would return just for that. As we were leaving, I noticed people showing up with laptops, and I asked someone if this was a good space for work, and she confirmed that it is, so I will be back for that! Excited to explore this gem more.
We had some wine and listened to some live music. It was nice.
I'm a vagabond, highly educated idiot. I want to tell you these people treated me with respect and kindness and that is raret and rarer on this street. The staff was kind and courteous and even respectful to me even though I appear as the ragged pirate I am. I give them mucho respecto for being honestly open to the idea of new customers and new experiences I highly recommend this place if you want to sit in private you can sit outside and a nice shaded picnic table with a fan blowing on you, you can go inside and soak up the AC and read a book if you want to. Places like this are rare and cherish to me. Please continue being cool
We had a bunch of seniors with us looking for great food and hit the jackpot. The food here is wonderful as well as the drinks. Rosalinda took care of our party and what a treat! She gave us patient 5 star service and I will def be returning with the fam.
I love this place — they make great coffee. The only reason I’m giving it a perfect score is because of the guy who hosts the bingo. He is amazing.
Love Opa when you’re craving Greek food or just need a nice coffee or glass of wine. The outdoor patio is anchored by a huge tree and is so cozy when it’s nice out. Inside has plenty of seating and a great place to work, read or have a book club discussion!
I hosted a wonderful Baby shower in their private room in the back of the restaurant. They set up the area with a private barrier and placed flowers on each of the tables. All of the guests were very delighted with the pizzas and the Greek shareable platters were delicious. They had a plethora of drinks, wine and espresso drinks. The staff took care of all the details. I will definitely consider this cozy place for any other event needed!!
Honestly one of the most complete cafes in town. From the welcoming service, tasty food and good coffee/drinks it never fails to deliver.
This place is great! A good alternative to a Starbucks for some focus time or for a nice little hang out session with friends. I went here around noon on a weekday and it wasn’t too busy. I ordered the breakfast croissant sandwich which the person at the counter helped me pick out! I didn’t have any expectations of the place but I’ve seen the building around and kept meaning to check it out, I’m glad I did! The sandwich was delicious with a super flaky/fluffy croissant, delicious cheese, and the perfect crispiness on the prosciutto! I will be coming back with friends! Thank you :)
Their happy hour, first of all, is amazing. Half off glasses from open bottles of wine and a good food selection. Their outdoor patio is very cute and rustic, but it's still quiet enough to where you can get work done with minor disruption. And their music isn't too loud, which is a huge plus.
Love it. If you want somewhere to eat and drink well and also chill and hang out for a bit can’t think of a better place than this ! Patios pretty. The cashier/bartender lady at the counter was so sweet too. Maybe a little loud next to the street, but 10/10 at what it does.
I’ve been coming here to study for the past 5 years. They have this seasonal drink called a Fireside Mocha that is the best coffee I’ve ever had in my life. The vibes are always right and there’s lots of indoor and outdoor seating. I also love the meatball plate.
OPA on South Lamar is a great spot for delicious Greecian cuisine, and has a very serene atmosphere adorned with beautiful landscaping and greenery. The enormous Live Oak Tree is one of my favorite things in Austin. Nicole and Celena are very kind and personable. OPA hosts many events throughout the week including Wednesday's Open Mic Night which caters to local and traveling artists as a welcoming creative space for sharing all forms of art. OPA is a true gem of Austin, just south of the river. 10/10, highly recommend. 💙🇬🇷🎶 -Mnemosyne
Great spot! Super chill with an old-world charm and post-modern atmosphere. Amazing outdoor & indoor spaces, both with tons of ambiance. I had a tomato based pizza with Falafel, olives, arugula, and lamb. It was exactly what I had been craving. Freaking sublime experience. I highly recommend! Shout out to my bartender / server, Josh B. And best of all, they have a BIKE RACK!!!!! That's worth a star all on its own. Am I right, ATX?!
I love this place, fresh food and plenty of seating. I love to sit outside, under the big tree. There is a good amount of shade, soft music and beautiful plants all around. I came here today for a Greek Salad. Its been on my mind for months. I was so excited when I saw it came with 2 Dolmas. I love 'em!
Love this original austin, locally owned coffee and food joint. Live music is always fun and can be surprisingly good quality. Open mic nights on Wednesdays are fun and very friendly. One of the spots I hope can remain for many years. Food here is also delicious. We shared the Mediterranean plate tonight... fantastic!
Have loved this place for years and will Always come back when I’m in Austin. Best hummus in town!
Found this place on maps juat looking for somewhere to have breakfast/brunch. Celine (sorry if I misspelled your name) was incredible, extremely kind, gentile and thoughtful. The environment is great either outside or inside. We had a White Mocca - amazing, but our favorite was a creation from Opa, the Banana Splir Latte, fenomenonal! And the food? I won't forget the Baked Fetta anytime soon, it was pure perfection! I mean, just take a look at the picture. Looking forward to come back and do it all over again!
Definitely a surprise! I had always wondered if I would find quality greek food in Austin and this is the best I've had! The hummus trio was delicious, with the pesto hummus being my favorite. I had a traditional greek salad and the skewer plate, both extremely fresh and flavorful. I'll be back!
Coffee, service, pastry -- 5/5 -- I love the semi-enclosed outdoor area. The large trees buffer (some of) the traffic noise/pollution. Inside was cool, spacious, with ample natural light for reading, and a few darker spots for chilling. Good music, not too loud. I'll be back to try the savory Greek fare, for sure.
Went for Bingo night, had fun with the kids, we won several different drinks to dry, some kid friendly, some adult only. The bingo host was very interactive and kept things upbeat and entertaining. Bartender was very sweet and did a great job holding down the fort alone. The whole family can’t wait to go back.
This place is such an Austin staple. The food and coffee is amazing. It's a great place to WFH with free wifi for the customers.
Great outdoor patio with large mature trees and lots of great seating! The iced coffee here is quite good and this’ll definitely become a place I come back to every once in a while to get some work done or hangout with friends. The inside has a very cool rustic home kind of atmosphere which makes this place feel very welcoming. I also am curious to try their food next time I stop in.
So cute! Coffee and sweet breads were very good. Excited to try the food menu, I've been twice and didn't even realize they served food until I saw someone order a plate.
Highly recommend the Greek salad! Opa is a neighborhood wine bar gem with friendly staff and a great place to lounge for hours (indoor or on their lovely patio).
This is always my stop durning traffic. The great food I remember! Even though it was busy the barista took the time to recommend a wonderful rosé. Love this place.
This is the best establishment in all of humanity's history for liquids, nutrients, sound waves, live music, comfortable warmness on the flesh, joy, and attractive souls. The highest of vibes are to be had here. We heard the music and saw the ambience. Then we literally made an illegal u-turn to be here. Excellence on all levels. Minus one thing. Its a little gauche to have a tv and sports playing. No offense and no disrespect. This is a classy place. Please do yourself a favor and spend your money here. The best choice you'll ever make for the betterment of your life. I love you Opa! Thank you.
I honestly loved everything about this place. I stopped in and immediately felt how warm and welcoming it was! iI’s family-owned and you can really tell they care. The food was AMAZING. The gyros were so fresh and flavorful, like the kind you keep thinking about after you leave. The guy at the register was genuinely so kind. I asked for feta and he gave me a whole block without hesitation ! You can tell everything is fresh and made with love. The outdoor patio is so cute and cozy, such a nice spot to sit and enjoy your meal. The whole experience just felt happy and comforting. I left in such a good mood and already know I’ll be back because I want to try literally everything on the menu. This place is special and absolutely worth supporting. Highly, highly recommend.
I’ve been going to Opa regularly for a while now, and I can so proudly say this cafe has the best coffee, matcha, food, staff, music, and seating out of all the cafes in Austin. Everyone is so nice and approachable, they really care about you having a good experience whether that’s with wine or even a macaroon! Lots of parking and perfectly tucked away even though it’s on a busy street. The outside has so much seating with plenty of shade.
A must-visit Greek café in Austin — Opa delivers every single time. I stopped in at Opa and ended up having one of the best casual meals I’ve had in Austin. The croissant sandwich is the real standout — buttery, flaky, and packed with prosciutto, arugula, tomato, and a perfectly cooked egg. It’s the kind of dish that looks simple on paper but hits every flavor note when you bite into it. To go with it, I ordered the Evil Eye cocktail, and it was the perfect balance of refreshing and unique. The combination of vodka, elderflower, citrus, and blue curaçao is bright, crisp, and just sweet enough without being overwhelming. If you’re someone who likes a drink that actually tastes crafted, not thrown together, this is it. The vibe at Opa is exactly what you want from a neighborhood Greek café — relaxed, cozy, and genuinely welcoming. Great food, great drinks, and a space you actually want to hang out in. Absolutely a 5-star spot. I’ll be back.
Quaint little cafe, beautiful calm and soothing atmosphere it's really neat to come across a place like this. The food was rather excellent and lightlt filling from the simple appetizers to the lamb gyro and pizzas. Stayed late enough to enjoy some beautiful light jazz from some various performers showcasing their amazing skills. Overall a great visit only real issue was little late on the food arriving but the staff overall was friendly and knowledgeable in their menu and very helpful!!
The gyro looked so good I ate half of it before I remembered to take a picture. The pita was so fresh it was soft and delicious. The fries were done to perfection! I want to give this place one star just so I know I'll always be able to get in when I want. 😏 The atmosphere is awesome. Grab a table and get some work done or have a small friend gathering and play games. They actually have games available! My daughter and I are making this "our" place to go. Next time I hope to get to spend more time with her in that very laid back environment.
What a great place. Located right across the street from Proud Mary, the energy is much more relaxed. A solid place to work or meet people. Get the omelette and add meat balls. Super good. Americano was solid. Bathrooms clean. Tons of parking. Lots of quiet indoor seating. Shady under the trees out door seating. Happy staff.
really great food! portions are also big (except the avocado toast) but the gyros especially are great meals. the coffee is delicious and high quality but a little slow. the food is quick to come. the staff is very nice too. lots of great vegetarian options, and the seating outside is so nice. i liked the pasta salad and warm pita a lot.
Went here for trivia night on Tuesday, so I think our vibe was perhaps more boisterous than normal. It seems like the regular vibe is one of quiet bustle and study. Service was great. This place is different from a couple years ago, much more open seating inside! We got the lamb gyro, falafel gyro, and the lentil soup - all did not disappoint. For a small joint, I was surprised they got proper crispy fries. The cocktail shined a little stronger, both the chai espresso martini and the regular espresso martini were great! My table also enjoyed the stout on draft.
Their gyros have more flavor than most Mediterranean places I've been to. Their combination of spices and fresh vegetables made the perfect lunch. Would've liked more meat, but I wasn't too pressed about it. The feta cheese was really good quality as well :) Would definitely go back for their baklava. It has the right amount of sweetness and it was inexpensive. To top everything off, I'd recommend their baklava latte. Sounds strange, but it tasted amazing! (image is my friend's meatball plate)
I was looking forward to OPA!'s weekend happy hour with $4 wines from 3-7, as advertised online. However, upon arrival, I found out that the happy hour discount was only $2 off and ended at 6 PM, not as stated on their website. This inconsistency was disappointing and left me feeling misled. On the bright side, the sangria was enjoyable!
Absolutely love the Jazz Jam they host on Tuesdays! It’s been so fun listening to local musicians play classics like Misty and Stella by Starlight. They have some super fun specialty cocktails like the cherry colada, but it is a bit pricy.
I visited Opa for my first time with my family and we absolutely loved the atmosphere and outside seating. Love the Greek take on food and coffee and I really enjoyed the Souvlaki skewers and would recommend! The baked feta was also delicious and had a lot of flavor. Workers were very nice. Definitely would come back and would suggest to anyone in the Austin area looking to try Greek food.
I've been coming to Opa for several months now. The atmosphere on the outdoor patio is fantastic and is, for me, the biggest draw to visiting and revisiting Opa. Live music is a frequent occurrence on their patio and is always most welcome, and makes visiting Opa with company that much more enjoyable. From the standpoint of genuine Mediterranean cuisine, the food is alright in quality; I've certainly had better. Granted, I grew up eating Greek food in the home, so my perspective is somewhat skewed. I'd equate the quality to approximately what's available at Greek festivals. The only other issue can be a lack of parking in the area, but if you can brave the parking situation then you're in for a relaxing time on the patio the next time you're there!
It’s a veggie filled gyro with a little piece of lamb for $15 but the fries were really good
Stop by after a morning run. It was my 1st time here, and it is charming. There is seating inside & outside. It’s dog friendly, and while I was there pretty quiet even tho there was a steady stream of customers. So focusing on reading a book, a conversation among friends or computer work is completely possible. The food I chose along with hot tea & cinnamon was tasty, especially after a run… I’ll be back ☺️
I do open mic here and the host Zach is hilarious... I had an amazing time met some cool people as well. It's definitely a place I will return to.
One of my favorite spots! Been plenty of times for brunch, good coffee and breakfast. Croissant sandwich and yogurt bowl are my go-to. Food service is a little slow, but I usually don’t mind. I sit outside and have never had a problem finding a table.
I didn't get the chance to order food while there, but the environment was one-of-a-kind. They had both outdoor and indoor sitting areas, and it felt like a place where you could comfortably get work done while sipping on some coffee or tea. It didn't feel crowded or unmaintained, but rather open and cozy.
This is a great place to meet up and hang out with friends. There’s plenty of space, comfortable tables, and quick service. The menu is extensive, and the staff is very friendly. I especially love the interior design, and there are options to sit both indoors and outdoors, which is a nice touch. The place is quite popular, and we had a wonderful time during our visit. However, I do have one comment. My drink was served in a cup with a chip. I always mention this to businesses when it happens. Please make sure to check your dishware carefully. Chips on cups can harbor bacteria and pose a risk of cuts while drinking. I kindly ask the owner to address this issue and inspect all dishware for any damage. Overall, it’s a fantastic spot, but this small detail needs attention.
We got the gyro and the falafel platter and both were pretty good! It was the perfect amount of food. You order at the bar and then they bring the food to your table. We also had the sangria which was $2 off during happy hour which lasted until 6pm. Lots of nice outdoor seating and indoor as well
Great place to grab and coffee/wine and relax. The inside is so cozy with plenty of seating and the outside is a great space to enjoy the weather. They have delicious, fresh food that can satisfy your hunger and the staff is so so welcoming! Favorites were the hummus and the gyro wrap. The pita bread was so fluffy and perfect with the hummus and the gyro meat was perfectly seasoned. White chocolate mocha coffee was delicious too. I wish the spanokopita had more feta cheese but it was still delicious!
1- credit card surcharge not posted ,I didn’t notice until I checked receipt next day. 2- wine by the glass shows $11 on menu but was charged $16😢 3- Staff excellent & friendly 4- veggies fresh , fresh potatoes, falafels very dry - reheated. Proteins chicken & lamb dry as well. Overall fell short due to misleading prices and not the best food in my opinion.
It's a nice place to hang out with friends, play games and nosh. The food is more Greek-inspired than authentic Greek cuisine. The meatballs are made with Cayenne pepper (?!) and served in something like Hunts tomato sauce.
Cute cafe! Decent coffee and fun events. Their pizza really missed the mark last time, and their pumpkin loaf tasted like dirty fry oil this time. The low quality oil left a terrible taste in my mouth, that impacted the rest of my latte. Please switch to butter, coconut oil, or just a higher quality of oil (to impart better flavor). Lol, I threw the bread away.
Beautiful outdoor seating area under oak trees or indoors in an old house! The food was pretty good, but the service (I hear this is typical of Austin) ... was terrible. I walked up to the register and the staff continued to talk among themselves for several minutes before acknowledging my presence. I gave up and turned to go to the restroom as someone said they would be with me shortly. Once I returned, two women perused the menu and the staff did not ask me if I was ready to order since I had been there before. Once I ordered, I waited over an hour for my food - for 2 mediterranean wraps... I had to go inside to show myself and one of the staff seemed to notice me as she then grabbed my plate and headed my direction, then greeted me with my wraps and a smile but seemingly was oblivious to the length of time it had taken. Once, I mentioned the amount of time, she just agreed that it was a long time and only asked if I needed anything - offered no apology or anything for the trouble.
Very cute cafe with a great selection of food. I had the lemon potato’s and baked feta. Potatoes were AMAZING. The feta was just alright but we enjoyed it. My bf had the lamb gyro and was up all night throwing up after our visit :(
Ordered the falafel plate. It was lacking in comparison to price vs offering of other Greek restaurants & the falafel was soft on both the inside & out, which is not what I want from falafel. Entertainment was interesting & the overall atmosphere was charming. If you're coming just for coffee & vibes, you will probably have a better overall experience.
I like the space and the vibe. There's a great balance between the laptop crowd, the chitchat crowd, and the loner crowd. I probably would rate this higher at night when the live music starts up. It's usually 8-10p I think. The salad was OK, nothing special. The lamb was refrigerated slices. But that's kind of a lesson: go here for the drinks and the music.
The food here was pretty good but not as flavorful as other reviews claim to be. I felt overhyped and let down. They had an open mic night when we visited for dinner and that was a good surprise. We also enjoyed lounging under the huge tree and the outdoor patio and enjoying the super moon!
When I saw the menu online, I got so excited. If you've ever had authentic Greek food, then you know you're in for a treat that is worth the price. This, however, was not an honest representation of greek food and might border on "insult." My husband got the gyro wrap, which was so disappointing he had a hard time wanting to finish at all. The meat was not gyro at all! I got the lentils and rice, which have an amazing description on the menu and in my mind i was thinking of all the amazing lentil dishes i-ve had accross the middle east- I am 98% sure it was Progresso lentil soup poured over instant rice. I recognized the flavor from the less fortunate days of my childhood. Needless to say, we were horrified to pay more than $50 for that. Honestly, this place could be a whole vibe if they put more into the food quality and authenticity. It had a great casual vibe outdoors that both my husband and I enjoyed while we waited for our food. I'd love to reconsider this place someday. I think the idea has a lot of potential. It is just not this day.
When you first arrive Opas is enticing. The atmosphere and patio are great, but that's where it ends. The food is Soso, especially for the price. The gyro was lacking in size and flavor however the pita bread was good. The lentil soup was very good as was the bread served with it. The dolmas are bland and seem to be from a can. There really is no service. You order at the bar, grab a number and go sit. You pay and tip when you order so the staff is stuck with whatever tip you leave then and you are stuck with no service. The default tip is 20% and given the lack 9f service.... you get the point. If you are up for a trendy place with a good atmosphere but limited quality food and service this is for you.
This place is getting expensive! Almost $10 for an iced almond milk latte. The atmosphere is ok, service is slow. Came here a lot for a while. Now too pricy given the environment.
I placed a to-go order. It took forever but it was an open mic night or so like that and the place was busy, good for them. So I ordered, the hummus, lemon potatoes, a Greek salad, the baked chicken with potatoes, the meatballs and a gyro. The hummus was a very small portion, I did not get any how it was the main thing my wife wanted I let her have it. The potatoes were not very lemony, the Greek salad had no green leaves was just topping but it did have a huge stick of feta which was nice. This should have been called a cucumber Greek salad. The baked chicken was not bad, the potatoes were the same lemon potatoes that I ordered could have saved my money and been disappointed at this point instead. I got the meatballs for my son, but realizing they were spicy, I have never encountered spicy Greek food without adding a condiment. Ohh the gyro was like deli meat slices, not carved meat. It's tasted ok, if I had to come back would likely get that. The place was suggested by someone I work with, I told him the disappointment and he said I ordered the wrong stuff. The menu had like 10 items and I thought I hit all the core Greek items. No plans to return.
Overall very disappointed with the food. We ordered the Souvlaki plate, Greek salad, gyro, and 2 cappuccinos. No olive oil on the salad (dry/bland). If you’re Greek, you know that’s not souvlaki, gyro was decent, the feta was dry and bitter, but the cappuccinos were pretty good. As a Greek, I don’t recommend coming here for the food, it’s overpriced and not authentic. It’s unfortunate because this place has potential.
Unfortunately, our experience here wasn’t great. After placing our order, we waited 30 minutes before checking in, only to be told that only one burner on their stove was working and food would be delayed. That’s something we would have appreciated knowing before ordering. My food came out shortly after, but my fiancé’s order never arrived, even after another 30 minutes of waiting. When we asked again, they realized his meal had been given to someone else. Throughout the whole experience, there didn’t seem to be any sense of urgency from the staff. While my food itself was delicious, the overall service left us hesitant to return.
Steep priced Greek-ish entrees in unexpected coffee shop environment. Counter service, bus you own table type place. Not what we we anticipating for the $50 ticket for a salad, falafel plate, and two topo chicos.
I’ve been in Austin for 6 years and this is the first time I’ve been disappointed in food! This is what Opa tries to pass off as souvlaki! Raise your hand if this looks like souvlaki to you 👎🏼😂 Sliced rubber chicken that never saw a skewer, let alone a grill or flame, a couple pieces of iceburg lettuce and a tomato! I’ve had airplane chicken that was better quality! I mentioned it to the server and she assured me this was their normal chicken they just “ran out of sticks” 🤦🏻♀️ It’s too bad too because it’s a cute patio area and they had live music. I would NOT recommend this place though. Plenty other cute spots in Austin with live music and good food.
DO NOT GO HERE. I say this because of the total lack of saying it is a "Greek Cafe". I have been to 2 Greek cafes in my life and both were disappointing. This place is the same, but before I tell you how not it is Greek inspired there are two positive things I will say at the end. Ok so I went to this place to give it a chance just to see if the had any Greek food I can determine. Being part Greek I can tell very clearly. Anyways, I looked at the menu and sure enough there were zero things that would appease me. I went with my wife who had food allergies and I didn't want to not get anything so I got the Greek sampler and a coffee. Everything on the menu was American style food with little hints of what they consider is what greeks eat. The sampler cost 15 dollars FYI. Our food came and it did not look like a 15 dollar worth of food. Oh I forgot. They get their supplies at a place called " Restaurant Depot". How do I know? Well first when I was getting sugar for the coffee I noticed the brand that you get there. Second, the domas are from the same place because I recognized the taste and size of them (they are not good) and also they come from a can. Now back to the food. The sampler came with tzatziki, hummus, a random sauce I am not familiar with, pita bites, small amounts of vegetables, and two domas. Again it was 15 dollars. The mystery sauce and tzatziki was ok but the hummus was not good at all and I suspect it was from Restaurant Depot. On the hummus I say this red powder on top of it and being a Chef myself I looked like cayenne pepper. I tasted it and yup it was cayenne. It did not add flavor it was just there to make it look cool. Back to the hummus it was not smooth from what I know what hummus should taste like. It was gretty and bland which means it was not made in house. I was really not happy with it and yes I could send it back but we had to go somewhere important and I didn't have enough time. My wife got a gyro with fries and it can be seen that the pita bread was from Restaurant Depo. Look I don't have a problem with restaurants buying supplies from there. Just make it taste good and make it obvious to me and others where it came. I do not have any pictures because I forgot my phone but you got to trust me on this one. Ok now for the positives (Yeah). The cafe had a decent amount of coffee drinks but I just wanted a regular drip and it was good. It cost 4 bucks which was like meh. The next one was the Wifi. I did not use the Wifi but I saw a good amount of people using laptops to browse the Internet and do work. All in all this place does not have any food that is Greek. It's more of an American cafe. I'm not coming back to this place because it was really disappointing.
My experience is only from take out. We ordered a Greek salad, domares, falafel, humus and chicken skewers. The chicken was awful, dry and tasteless. You can see the photo. The pita was dry too. Falafel was ok. It was very disappointing Greek/Mediterranean food. And they forgot the Greek salad in my order.
Fine for coffee. Don’t waste your time for dinner. Literally. Food takes AGES to be ready. Even ordering ahead is useless because the estimates are way off.
I liked this restaurant until I spoke with ex employees and heard that they treat workers poorly. It’s disheartening to hear that the bartenders do not receive all of their tips. Nobody is allowed to see payroll and see where their money is going. Yikes! I hope the labor board gets involved. I cannot support this business in good faith. I will tell others to stay away from this restaurant.
Tried placing a pickup order over the phone and the lady said it would take too much time and be too much of a hassle to check if what I ordered had peanuts and treenuts in it. To be fair it was Sunday during what I’m assuming was dinner rush but figured it wasn’t that big of an ask… just wanted some Greek food :(
Eater beware: The falafels we ordered were from trader joe’s (same perfect shape and grainy industrial taste) and they didnt even care to microwave them enough. Dolmas are are also from a can (you can tell from the citric acid taste. Freshly made dolmas dont taste like that). It would be understandable if it wasnt “a greek cafe” maybe…very understaffed so we waited ~30 mins to be served ready made microwaved food. Not sure why they kindly force a tip starting from 20% for counter service and all that..
Worst Greek food I've ever had. I ordered the Mousaka - it was burned and tasted like it had been reheated 4 days in a row. My friend ordered the briam - the veggies tasted as though they were past their 'use by' date. The frappe was decent. Called the restaurant to speak with the owner 3x. The staff was nice and helpful. I emailed the owner to professionally discuss my concerns with the owner - she didn't even bother to respond to me!! No email, no phone call...nothing! I will never return to opa. With so many other options I recommend anywhere else.
After standing in line for 20 minutes when I only had 35 minutes to grab a bite & a drip coffee, I left without ordering. I was looking forward to their delicious Greek omelette, but it was not going happen unless I had at least an hour to wait. It was a Sunday morning with a line of at least 10 people which barely slimmed down because there was no one helping the barista. He had to ring up all of the orders and turn around and make all the drinks. I was so impressed by the time I finally got to the counter I asked his name. Santiago was hustling so efficiently and was incredibly friendly to everyone. I’m almost appalled at the establishment for being so clearly understaffed on a busy Sunday morning. They needed one person ringing up sales and another person just on barista/drinks. When I tried to order an omelette, I found out that it would take at least another 30 minutes. Essentially between standing in line and receiving my food it would’ve been 50 minutes. Weekends on South Lamar are very busy, especially in the mornings. It astounds me that a busy café would only have what appeared to be one barista, one cook and a busser for the entire shift. I wish I had more cash on me to tip this amazing worker. I hope they double his pay because I’ve rarely seen someone hustle that hard. No café should push their employees to the brink and expect their customers to stand in line for 20 minutes to place their order. Furthermore, I don’t know if their AC is broken or if they just turned it off at the first cold snap but it’s very hot inside, particularly when the kitchen is open. They have tons of windows and only the front door propped open. It was so uncomfortably warm inside that all the patrons were sitting outdoors. I have been patronizing this establishment for 10 years and was incredibly disappointed by my recent visit. They are no longer near the top of my list for cafés in my neighborhood.
I remember when Opa opened on S Lamar. I think we were one of their first customers as we were served their Greek fare in a fun environment. I’ve enjoyed watching Opa becoming a solid establishment. Over the years, I’ve never considered the staff to be overly friendly or welcoming or acting as if they cared people came in - if that is your vibe, not a problem. However, I don’t think I’ll ever go back after last week. The staff was just down right rude, unhelpful and even unkind. In a world where so many are stressed, isolated, at odds with each other, this type of behavior for a public facing job just isn’t necessary or acceptable. Good bye, Opa. I’m sad & sorry. I don’t mind paying the high prices for going out, but I think management needs to up their service game & teach some skills or let people who just bring Opa down, go.
