Had an absolute blast here!!! Fantastic service, great music. Tried the lemon - highly recommended. The brown butter apple - also yum. Matcha pie - first miss. Tasted like dirt. I'd definitely visit again. Great indoor seating atmosphere as well.
Great coffee but incredible pie. Have ordered whole pies (love the pecan chocolate) and the four piece sampler. Warning - if you want a pie for Thanksgiving - order it as soon as possible. I missed the cutoff date this year and I have marked my calendar so I don't miss this year! A few tables inside and a bench outside.
I was a salty honey addict. And still am, I still think of that pie years later.
I've been coming here since 2012. What an amazing place for pie, they are all delicious! When I bring them as hostess gifts everyone gets excited. Favorites are the salted honey, Buckeye, caramel apple, black bottom oat, cranberry apple, pecan, pumpkin, and chocolate chess! 🥧
Great spot and incredibly friendly staff. The pie is divine, the lemon chess pie is a perfect balance of sweet and savory and the apple pie cannot be missed. The folks there 12/18/23 were great!
They have amazing pies with interesting flavors. Loved the matcha pie and blueberry lavender streusel They were really enthusiastic to explain all the flavors to me which was really cute! Go check them out!
We have been getting pies, whole and slices, from here for years. The best thing about 4&20 is THEE CRUST! Housemade, flaky, with just the right chew, especially when the juices or custard permeates the pores, as it bakes. Interestingly enough, one of our favorites is the Salted Caramel Apple Pie. It is a meal within itself. It is loaded with chunky, yet thin slices of apples and rivers of salted caramel flow through each layer. Baked, the pie gives an aerated layer of anticipation. We also get the custard Honey Salt and Peanut Chocolate. They do change with seasons or holidays so always check. These are their standards though. For events, it is best to order well in advance. They do have whole pies available but OFTEN sell out! Service is swift, efficient and friendly. Parking can suck but it's Brooklyn so...double park and quickly grab your pie to go.
Tasty pies, always something different and so close to the subway at 4th and 9. Place is great anytime to hang and read a newspaper. The custard pies are all different and the coffee is bottomless. I'm happy to see that the pies sell out each day, I just wish they had more pumpkin pie in the fall, and a half pie purchase option/mini pie
One of my favorite eateries in NYC! They have the best pies hands down, especially any of their chess pies. The location location is also very cozy, making the experience of eating the pies at the shoppe very enjoyable.
Absolute lovely place! I'm very picky when it comes to apple pie, but their salted caramel variant was great. The staff was super friendly and the place overall had a very chill vibe. I also think their pricing is very reasonable considering the free refill.
I really thought it wouldn't live up to the hype but it was truly the best slice of apple pie I've had in NYC, actually maybe ever. I got the salted caramel apple and it was fantastic. I guess the only downside was that it was a little too small of a slice. Save your money and buy the whole dang pie! The atmosphere is coffee shop esque, people posted up on laptops and reading books and such. Quiet and relaxed. I've tried Martha's, Petee's, Blue Stove, and others, and this apple pie beats all of them. Those others were delicious, don't get me wrong, but this one won!
Three words for you: CHOCOLATE CHESS PIE. Make or buy some whipped cream to go with it. You'll thank me.
We stumbled across this gem of a bakery cafe while we were walking to Whole Foods. Being in NYC for business and pleasure means looking forward to seeing and trying great things, so this was a highlight of our trip. The nursery rhyme name of this establishment caught our attention, but it was the very first bite of our slices of pie that sealed the deal. If you are able to visit or haven't thought to go in and live in the neighborhood, let this be your sign to GO! You can order whole pies as well as cookies, bars and savory pies. The coffee served is excellent and strong. The atmosphere is welcoming, chill and friendly. It's a comfortable place to eat in alone or with friends. If you want to bring someone something out of the ordinary order a pie and know it will be a hit! We will remember our visits for a very long time after we return home.
Great coffee, pies and friendly staff. Strongly recommend! ☕
They make great pies. We always get them thanksgiving day
First tried pie here back in 2014 and still can’t get enough! I am obsessed with the chocolate chess pie and stone fruit granola (the latter of which is seasonal unfortunately but an absolute must try!!). The matcha is also really yummy. My only suggestion would be to make it possible to select the flavor for same day delivery orders (at least for whole pies if not the slice boxes) or post the daily flavors somewhere.
Great coffee, very nice people. It's hard not to eat all the pie.
Super cute interior. Tried the Black Bottom Oat which was great topped with whipped cream. Definitely a high quality slice of pie; you can tell from the first bite. They were out for the day of several but I'm excited to come back and try the apple based pies.
I visited this pie spot 6 YEARS ago, when I was living in Manhattan - took a trip down there over winter after seeing on social media (I think). Did not disappoint; and to this day, I still rememver the tasty pies and coffee I had that winter day. I am glad to see it is still open! I look forward to go back some day (good memories).
My first visit here and I tried both the Matcha Custard and the Black Bottom Oat pies. The matcha was very smooth. Delicious! The black bottom oat was extremely rich. You have to love rich, sweet treats to enjoy this one. I could have handled it better had I not had another slice of pie to sample but it was an interesting creation. I also enjoyed an Americano while sampling the pies. If I'm fortunate enough to visit again I'll go for the apple because it looked delectable!
I’m a sucker for the Bittersweet Chocolate Pecan Pie ($44) by 4&20! My friend who is a Brooklynite introduced me to 4&20 and I think I’ve made more purchases than her ever since. I often place an order for pick up, since my current office is not too far away. During the pick up I’ll usually add the chive & cheddar scone ($3.50) which I find very yummy or a different type of slice ($6) to try. I very much recommend and introduce friends/family/co-workers to the bittersweet chocolate pecan pie all the time, so I’m doing the same right now to whoever is reading this!
Just the best pie place in the city IMHO. They have about 4-5 pie flavors you can get by the slice, and you can get whole frozen pies to take home and eat later. Some of my favorites - Salted Apple Caramel (yum), chocolate chess, lemon chess, pecan and they have seasonal stuff like blueberry rhubard pie! Slices are about $7. They also have brownies and select savories pastries. Well worth the visit, and make sure you get the cream with the pie slices!
DAMN! Oh my damn.... I usually hate pies and would never even think to try finding a pie place but this place has made me a believer. I need more, as I'm writing this all I can think about is pie. You don't need to read any reviews about this pie place, just come in and get some!! But if you insist, I sampled the salty honey, salted caramel apple, and matcha custard. Each one was freaking outrageous, although the salted honey was just a little above the others. Regardless I can eat all three for the rest of my life. I need more......
Super cute, nice staff, and inviting atmosphere. I've been to a lot of places where the "community table" seating is uncomfortable and awkward, but the one they have here is genuinely wonderful. The menu's definitely a bit pricey, but it's a really nice space to come for a treat and get some work done.
In Brooklyn’s realm, where pies entwine, Four and Twenty Blackbirds, a sweet shrine. On Pie Day’s eve, with stars aligned, I entered in, a feast designed. With matcha custard, a vibrant hue, And malted pecan, a flavor true. Malted chocolate, a velvety surprise, Each slice a tale beneath the skies. Salted honey, a golden flow, And lavender honey, a scent to know. But amongst them all, a nod to lore, The blackbirds baked, forevermore. Yet fear not, for no birds were harmed, Just flavors crafted, finely charmed. At Four and Twenty, tales take flight, In every pie, a song of delight. So come and taste this culinary art, At Four and Twenty, where dreams impart. With blackbirds baked and flavors high, A slice of heaven, ‘neath Brooklyn’s sky.
We were staying in Manhattan and made a special trip to Brooklyn just for these pies. Our son and daughter-in-law turned us on to Four and Twenty several years ago when they bought the cookbook - our daughter-in-law has perfected the caramel apple pie and it's a Thanksgiving tradition. We had the chocolate chess and the September special, Spiked Creamsicle, which is an orange custard topped with candied orange peel. They also have an amazing selection of tea, which is served in hand knotted bags. Oh, and we also bought the cookbook for ourselves!
I’ve enjoyed their delicious and decadent pies in the past but yesterday I had picked up a blueberry pie I had ordered 2 days before. The blueberries were plentiful and delicious and the pie crust was unbelievably fabulous. I think this is the best blueberry pie I’ve ever had. Thank you. I’ll be back!
The matcha pie was to die for. It is perfectly made, perfectly sweetened. Very rich matcha flavor. Tastes amazing with whipped cream. Came on a weekday afternoon so the shop wasn't too busy. It's located on a intersection which is easy to spot. Would definitely come back again when I'm in town to try every other flavor.
Glad I stopped by. The peaconut pie and the double chocolate cookie was delicious! Brought color to a very gray morning 🩷
I've been here twice, had a slice of the salted caramel apple as well as the pumpkin and WOW, both were incredible. I'm not normally the biggest fan of pumpkin, but this one was just out of this world, thick and rich and the perfect ratio of crust to filling. The bakery itself is cute and charming, and the staff were kind and welcoming. I highly recommend!
feels like a farmhouse kitchen, to someone who has clearly never entered one. I love the quiet darkness of the space: ambience is an important part of enjoying that bespoke pie. they do it all very well -love the lemon pie, and the apple, and a good cup of coffee or perhaps the mint tea which is loose leaf so it imparts more flavor. sit by the large windows and let the traffic of Gowanus roll by.
The Salty Honey Pie is undeniably special. The space is welcoming and staff are laid back and friendly. A local gem.
My god! This place is dangerous to have within walking distance, because it is just too good. I have been here 3 times in a 3 week span and dont think it will stop. They have different pies every day but i got the ‘snickers’ slice the last time with a side of whipped cream. This was a decadent and rich treat, but the fresh mild (not overly sweet) whipped cream paired perfectly with the pie cutting through the decadence a bit. Highly recommend! Amazing pie and even friendlier staff🤙🏾
Four and Twenty Blackbirds is the gold standard for pies. They make the best pies from coast to coast. My favorite pies are the salted caramel apple, lemon chess, salted honey, pumpkin, and blueberry. You really can’t go wrong with any pie. Four and Twenty Blackbirds makes the perfect flakey crust. Pro Tip: Order your pie extra early for Thanksgiving as they will sell out.
Beyond delicious! We ordered these for our wedding dessert and they were a massive hit. The lemon chess especially. Couldn’t recommend them enough!
Very cozy place with a huge wooden table for two persons. I ordered oat latte and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. I am intolerant of too much sugar but the pie was right amount of sweetness and great with freshly made whipped cream. The oat latte tasted excellent too. I could stay a whole day.
One of the best coffee spots I have been to. The pie is top notch! I wasn’t sure which one to get so I had a couple slices. The coffee was made fresh and was very good. The small cafe space was nice to dine in and had a cool vibe. The service was very good and everything was very very fresh. I wish I lived closer to come back and try more items.
I love pie, and thus am hard to please. I feel like you can kinda get away with a crappy cake but pie holds itself to a higher, more sophisticated standard, and flaws are harder to hide. This was some of the best pie of my life. It was ABSOLUTELY the best pecan pie I've ever had, I now not only understand why people like pecan pie, but I'm now an avid fan myself. I need to get this bakeries book and learn the secrets to their crust because it is perfect. Honestly, there's not much more so say. We tried their lemon, matcha, chocolate pecan and their cranberry sage and every one could not have been improved upon. Flavors were sharp, strong, balanced, great, deep matcha, the lemon and cranberry were tart without being sour, the pecan was sweet without being too sweet (they brilliantly use bittersweet chocolate. I could probably tear through a whole one myself). It's pie done right. Smooth custard fillings, flakey gold crust. And because this place is a paradise full of magical dream people they gave us a to-go cup of whipped cream. I love them. Happy national pie day everybody. For a celebration destination, look no further than this fine place.
Upon passing Four and Twenty Blackbird, you may not know what this establishment sold if not for the outdoor stand directing you to pie… but any and all locals around here know this is where it’s at. There are a handful of flavors to choose from whether you’re ordering by the slice or getting an entire pie. My favorite is the brown butter apple streusel—it’s layered with apples (not soggy) and whatever mixture that holds this pie together, and is topped with a crumble. If fruit/apple pies aren’t your thing, lemon chess, or black bottom oat are good too. If you’d like something more fragrant and floral, go for the lavender honey. It’s custard-like, creamy and smooth, and has a great melt in your mouth consistency. You can grab-and-go or order coffee with a slice and stay for a while to enjoy the cozy vibes.
I really love this spot and none of their pies ever miss. Every single thing I’ve tried has always been fantastic. And I always make it a priority to support all the local businesses that make New York great. If you want pie, this is always the first place I suggest to people.
Swung by for Brooklyn's best pie after a bad day at a nearby salon, and was instantly uplifted. The staff was so friendly and willing to share a laugh and good conversation. They were out of my favorite slice so I was going to take just a latte (also wildly good), but the staff convinced me to take a seasonal Hojicha slice and it was fantastic. Will never stop recommending Four & Twenty Blackbirds!
I got the mushroom hand pie and the hojicha custard pie slice and both were beyond incredible. Like hauntingly delicious. They can't just be out there selling these, it's not reasonable, I should have been warned I would be haunted.
I wish I had a better photo of the rhubarb pie - it’s beautiful and most importantly it tasted amazing. Finding just rhubarb pie is hard and finding it out of season in late September is even harder. I am so glad I could pre order this for my boyfriend’s birthday. It’s his favorite that his mom makes and he is so picky about pies but was really happy with one. Sweet and tart with perfect crust and crumble. Thank you guys for making it a great birthday
The pies from this place are amazingly delicious! My favorite is the Lemon Chess Pie - the best! This last time we had a cappuccino from Variety Coffee - the perfect temperature for a rainy morning. Where some places overheat their capps, here, they definitely make cappuccinos right. Also, my husband & I shared a Blueberry Lemon Muffin and Brown Butter Apple Strudel. Both were scrumptious Fall treats. The place is pretty and rustic with plenty of seating. The staff are always friendly!
We had one savory and one sweet pie. Both were absolutely delicious. Prices are very reasonable. Nice, young, atmosphere. Recommend!
I just experienced four and 20 blackbirds for the first time and I had gotten there lemon chess pie and I kid you not, it is quite literally the most delicious lemon chess pie I have ever had in my existence, almost, if not truly the best thing I have ever tasted. The tartness is just a symphony of delicious and the crust just perfectly flaky and layered and delicious, if I ever had to be on death row, that would have to be part of my last meal
I’ve been eating pie from this place for years but finally made it down to the mothership to try it in person. The place is cute! Lots of seating options. K so about the pies- they are delicious, I’m writing this a week post pie and honestly want to go back today because I need some more strawberry rhubarb pie in my life immediately. (I’m pregnant lol). I’m more of a fruit pie girl and would recommend any of them. I’m sure all the lies are great though. Coffee is good! I left my purse accidentally (did I tell you I’m pregnant?) and they kept it safe till I came to pick it up. Overall 10/10 and need to go back!
cutest little pies, salted honey was really good but super sweet. i wasn’t a fan of the chocolate pecan but others did so it just depends on tastebuds
The pies here are very good and arguably the best available in the city. I do think they were once better than they are now, but fame and volume have taken a toll on quality. I never see the women from Kansas anymore who started it all.
I’ve had the Coffee Custard which is like a tiramisu and the Chocolate Pecan pies. They were both really good!
Honestly, if the pie was warm I might have rated this place five stars since I love warm pie. Salted honey was my favourite, even though I fully expected to love the caramel apple...the rhubarb too. I have their recipe book and make the apple pie often. But, it was just okay in real life. I think it needed to be warm out of the oven. The ice cream is not really worth ordering. The prices were a bit high especially for a full pie. Otherwise, the space is gorgeous and rustic. There’s one beautiful communal table with lots of natural light and many smaller tables. The staff was really nice.
Unplanned but very happy that I finally got to try the famous @birdsblack! Coffee custard pie was so yummy. I love how it’s not too sweet, just how I like it! Coffee was not bad at all either given that it’s not a coffee shop. Would love to try their matcha pie next time. The pictures look amazing😍
This is a great spot to grab breakfast on a weekend morning. I always find myself debating over what to get because the flavors are so good. A slice of pie and a black coffee are a lovely start to your day. Be careful with seating during peak times, this is a place where people claim their seats before they order. Although the pie is good, I would say that it’s overpriced. $6 for a slice of pie is way too much. A bake shop on 5th sells (better?) for $4. And $0.75 for whipped cream? This place is definitely a treat, they would get my business more if they didn’t charge so much.
I love pie. And this place is fine, but doesn’t fully live up to its hype, and I really wish it did because I LOVE pie and nyc doesn’t have good pie shops in town. Cupcakes? Yes. Pies? Not so much. I got the Lemon Chess and it was fine, but not as good as Florence Pie Bar (tho theirs was too sweet, but they had a better texture down.) Like the pie was fine, but I always walk out wish I was in Seattle, missing the pie shops out there… :(
5.24.18 - Salted Caramel Apple Pie, never disappoints! 6/23/17 -picked up a Salted Caramel Apple pie, $40. Pricey, but worth it. The location is cute and there are a number of seats and tables. It's a nice place to spend a mid-morning slice of pie... ***Previous Review - It's some darn good pies! The location gets great sunlight and natural light throughout the day. Definitely a good local spot to support. The pies are $40, which some believe is pricey, but the pies are really good!
tried a slice of the cranberry sage & salty honey. both were great, especially the salty honey. cortado was great, too! i really liked the simplicity of environment. there was more seating space than i expected. service was chill/neutral. thank you!
Disappointing atmosphere, the people working were very busy charring with a regular who was in front of us, already had her coffee and was just chatting, we were at the counter for a good 5 mins without being acknowledged. The pies are great, but thick crusts - if you prefer a tart fine, this isn't for you. They are hearty, sugary, and filling! Great value for money. The coffees were good. All the tables except 1 were empty but dirty, and we didn't want to sit on the table for 10 (we were only 2)
i’ve had their matcha custard, which had no matcha flavor, and the june 2024 black currant apple rose, which had no rose flavor. sweet but not cloyingly so. it seems their crust, which is buttery heaven, is their strength while the fillings can be underwhelming. probably better enjoyed without knowing the flavors so you don’t go in with strong expectations :-)
Amazing Pie but they didn’t have anything to serve warm apple pie. Pie experience would be 9 out of 10 If they did. I suggest buy a whole pie take it home and heat it up
Came all the way from NJ expecting a warm slice of pie, but the service was kinda cold. Latte wasn’t hot, pie wasn’t warmed up, and no one offered. You’d think a pie shop would be all about warmth. Anyway it’s my second visit, not great.
A pie store with different kinds of pei. The apple pie is nice and can have ice cream together 🍦🍎🥧but all pies are made before the day and can not heating when you eat it, it's a pity⋯ Href’s have lots seats with the charging so you can spent time here. Also offer coffee for take in or take out.
Lovely pie, good coffee, charming interior. All that is why I'll keep going. It's the kind of place though where the service is subtly hostile. You're fine if you, the customer, set the tone heavy with respect and propriety. If you ask for anything that could be interpreted as an inconvenience, you'll receive an attitude that implies you're the problem and how dare you be so entitled and not imagine what it's like for them to be on the receiving end of that question. I stayed until 5:57 the other day and felt like I was being pelted by bad vibes, called out "thanks" as I walked out and was met with what felt like a pointed silence. For context, I'm in hospitality. Being hospitable is not very hard, unless you fundamentally don't believe in the spirit of hospitality.
I wanted to love this place- but I didn’t. I ordered a slice of the caramel apple and the coffee custard. The custard was perfect in texture but the coffee flavor was a bit off. I expected a richer flavor. The caramel apple I thought would be tart and sweet but it tasted like simple apple cinnamon pie. Not much caramel sweetness. I ordered an ice coffee which was also ok. Although not as great as I had hoped I would return to try different pies as they alternate pies. It is 6.00 for a slice and about 45 for a whole pie 🥧
My bf and I got two slices of pie and one coffee. Upon ordering I noticed they have a sign, “buy any two slices of pie and get one free slice of salty honey pie.” They did not offer it to us, so I let go.. a few mins later a customer ordered a couple slices of pie and a worker automatically offer them the free slice of pie…. Makes me wonder if they forgot (I doubt it tho) or we were being discriminated… My bf was planning to buy a few pies for the holidays, but after today we won’t be coming back. Btw, the pies are not that great and it is not memorable. I prefer Petee’s Pie Company in the LES.
Refused to warm up my apple pie slice! I was so excited to try this place, but the experience fell flat. A cold slice just doesn’t cut it, and their unwillingness to accommodate such a simple request was disappointing. Will not be coming back.
This place looked nice in the photos so was excited to check it out. Unfortunately it was a huge letdown. Pies are way too sweet and just generally not that great. Service is also bad and very not friendly. Do yourself a favor and skip this place.
$46 for the Carmel apple pie, service is terrible. Staff act as though you’re bothering them. Pie cost increasing, no longer buttery or flaky. Not worth it anymore.
Not a great experience. Walked in to order a few places of pie, we normally go a few times a year and came in excited to pick up the pie. We were immediately met with an attitude like we were impeaching on their alone time, the plave had one other customer there. I initially said I wanted a few pieces of pie, she asked " Well how many is a few", I was originally going to do 4 or 5 but wanted some recommendations or to be treated with respect not as a nuisance. Ended up ordering 3 pieces, and they messed up one piece. So on top of the terrible service they also messed up our order. I also never leave bad reviews or any at all, but we were met with an attitude when we were here 6 months ago too but decided to come back and give them another chance. The pie itself ( the pieces that were correct) however the service sucks.
Rude staff with attitudes. I don't expect them to be overly friendly or nice but it's not necessary to be unpleasant and rude. Pies are decent and on the sweeter end but plenty of good pie places in NYC without a dash of attitude on the side. Not worth the bad experience.
The pie was cold, the lady at the register doesn't even offer to warm it, the ice cream was okay. Not very welcoming at all. :(
Went in to order 1 lemon chess pie and 1 slice for my birthday but was met with attitude. I do not expect overly friendly service but the way I was spoken to made me felt uncomfortable. The lady taking my order was very snappy and repeated herself loudly when I didn't respond immediately. The pie overall was actually decent but the attitude you get from the staff is not worth the trip.
