A really nice place, we had a really good breakfast. A special mention for Donna, she is such a delightful woman. Full of happy energy! Thanks Donna! Bless you
I love the atmosphere family friendly, big yummy plates, reasonable price. I highly recommend thank you. Blackbear diner for making my breakfast beautiful
Visiting the area and this was the only place open before 7am. After trying it, I had to keep coming back. It's clean, quiet, and I enjoyed the bear theme. Large portions and good coffee. Love the 2 egg chicken fried steak platter.
Delicious breakfast with large serving sizes. Kids loved the kids menu options.
Two of us had lunch on an early Thursday. We got a Ruben and a Tuna Melt and split them. We told the server and so the sandwiches came out cut exactly in half. Nice touch. The corned beef was plentiful and balanced well with the sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing. Yummy but slightly dry meat. The Tuna Melt was Albacore with a slightly sweet salad and cheddar cheese. Really good. Both on grilled swirl rye. The service was friendly and efficient. The menu is extensive on newsprint, which was fun. We will go back. Try it.
Great, authentic American breakfast dinner, offering anything you can dream up. The best "thing" about the place are the people, the staff that is super nice, very helpful and even under the worst stress smiling. Special thank you to Donna, for starting our mornings at Sea Otter with great food, coffee and positive energy. We will be back next year.
Plenty of parking in a lot net to a gas station. Went in on a Monday morning around 9am in a party of two. Ambiance was quiet, clean, and looks like a faux cabin, which was really nice. We got seated immediately, got waters, and our server came to take any additional coffee orders. I ordered the Volcano and let me tell you, I regretted nothing. IT SLAPPED (and that's young people talk for absolutely phenomenal). It was three huge, tasty pancakes and two of each: bacon, sausages, and eggs however you like them. For $14, it was a steal. I'll definitely be back.
OMG! DO NOT Pass Up Visiting this location. We have a local BBD near our home, but this one is the best I have ever eaten at. The service impecable, staff friendly and the food extra hot and delicious. Since this was my birthday I decided to try something new, Southern scramble. What I like best, I did not have to ask that the scrambled eggs be cooked extra well. It was perfect. I also had a small glass of cranberry juice. I mention this because every other BBD only offers medium and larger (that's a lot of sugar). So Kudos on the small size. The portion was just the right size to keep me going all day long. Thanks for making my day special. We also learned the daughter of waitress would enjoy her birthday tomorrow! So cool.
Michael was the best! Good recommendations great service. A very nice experience in a time when there seem to be less
Staff greeted us rapidly and found us a nice spot to sit. Food was served quickly and our questions were answered promptly and fully about the food and service. Food was well presented, in generous portions and delicious. One of the best Diner experiences I have had, fully recommended this place.
When you don't want to make a big deal out of a meal, just want to relax and have a hearty meal, attentive service. They have a full turkey dinner, which many restaurants don't have excep holidays!
Stopped in @10am for a birthday breakfast for my dad. The restaurant offered plenty of parking, clean inside and out. We were promptly seated and offered drinks. Our order was placed and was severed quickly. As always, at Black Bear, large portions and tasty. The only disappointment, was the consistancy and taste of the gravy, for the biscuit. Staff sang happy birthday, gave my dad a muffin with a candle and a small stuffed black bear. Great service and food. We will be back.
Awesome food, mostly. We had pancakes, waffles, vegetarian omlette everything but hashbrown(came with omlette) was good
They have huckleberry milkshakes! They are the best! The waffles were good, but not the best I've had. My dad liked the Denver omelette.
One of the best black bear diners - nice, fast service, steak was not overcooked, tables clean...
10/10 would come again! Great service, lovely restaurant, and delicious food! Kevin was our waiter and he was fantastic. Would highly recommend this place.
Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend! Would give 6 out of 5 stars if I could. They have a large variety on the menu, our waitress was excellent and personable, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. Their steak is delicious and could put many quality steakhouses to shame, and it comes with two generous sides, a huge side salad and a wonderful cornbread muffin. We went on Father's day and dad got the prime rib special and he loved it. All the rest of us had other cuts and none of us were disappointed. And the best part is the unbelievably low prices. $20 for a 10oz ribeye, taters, veggies, salad and cornbread is incredibly reasonable! When we first saw the prices, we were a little deflated because we thought there would be small portions and the food would be mediocre. But when they brought our plates out less than 10 minutes after ordering (!), we realized we were completely wrong. This was probably one of the best restaurant experiences I have ever had. You have to stop in!
We decided to try out a local spot in Monterey, across the street from black bear, it wasn't all that. We are from fresno and black bear is our go to spot, which the Monterey location did not disappoint. Excellent customer service at every location so far, keep up the great work!
We ordered the original scrambowl to share and without even asking, they split the order on two plates for us. All the ingredients were fresh and tasty and the portion was perfect for two. We really felt welcomed by the staff and the whole place had a laid back, country vibe. We bought a small mixed berry pie to go and it was so good! Although we wished it had pie crust on the bottom of the pie as well, the fruit made up for it!
Amazing portions, staff is always attentive and friendly. Thought it’d be like some other breakfast franchise we’ve been to but this restaurant’s quality and attention to detail surpasses any other competitors. The portion sizes are huge, you will never leave this place hungry or dissatisfied with their customer service. New favorite place of ours that we always look forward to go to.
We like to eat here, when we are tired of cooking, and want to experience homemade food, no pressure and a relaxing atmosphere. Juice and nicely cooked food with simple, familiar and expected flavors. It is definitely comfort food. Very friendly and nice servers, no exceptions. The portion sizes are big "American size". The best part of the menu is that you can have breakfast in the evening and dinner in the morning.
This place is a MUST STOP. The portions are HUGE! The team is Amazing and they work extremely hard. Menu is easy to read and meduimed priced. Lots of choses. Lots of parking and two entrances. Well lit. Black Bears are their theme and the use it well. Kid friendly and great atmosphere. Lots of seating including counter seating. Highly recommend this place
The place is definitely one of the highlights of our California road trip! Amazing food for reasonable prices, wonderful music playing in the background, clean restrooms and very friendly and attentive servers. In love with this place, will definitely come again and recommend it to my friends.
The servers are on point. The only compliant is if your glass is half empty they could ask would you like another, please nod or shake your head. Since they manage to always catch you with a mouth full of food.
We had such a wonderful experience at Black Bear Diner! The portions are absolutely huge. My husband ordered the New York steak and it was gigantic — seriously impressive! Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. We also ordered one regular meal and one from the kids’ menu, and it was more than enough for us. We left completely full and very happy! The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and our server was incredibly friendly and attentive. The service really made our visit even more enjoyable. Great job to the whole team — super experience! We will definitely be back!
Black bear diners are one of my faves. They've got a variety of things on their menu. Always come back for their sweet potatoes fries.
Service was phenomenal, as was the food. No wait to be seated, the food came quickly, and the staff went above and beyond to assist us. The supervisor, I believe his name was Jose M., was very attentive and helpful in the payment processes. This is a frequent stop when I'm in town and I'd most definitely recommend this location.
What an amazing team they have here, even on Thanksgiving which is the day that I went. Food was delicious in where I always get omelettes. Will definitely be back again when I visit Monterey!
Yummy diner food. Good at accommodating vegetarian requests. Lots of sweet options and lots of protein options, if you eat eggs or meat. Fun atmosphere. Cute bears everywhere. Family friendly, except the whole restaurant is surrounded by adorable stuffed animals and toys for sale. Be forewarned if you're coming with kids who will want things.
First time ever even seeing a Black Bear Diner. If you or your little one likes bears, this place is amazing, I love the bear decor. Food is genuinely so delicious, and if you like spicy, try their Papa Bear hot sauce! It was so good, we bought a bottle. Our server was very nice and friendly, took care of us well. I had 2 pancakes, sunny side up eggs, bacon, and country potatoes along with some of that delicious hot sauce and everything was so delicious, no complaints. The pancakes are incredible. Paired with a vanilla cold brew which was also delicious, not as sweet as most vanilla cold brews are. My partner got the sourdough burger with french fries and everything was delicious as well. My only very minor dislike was the water here. It has this kind of flavor that the water fountains at parks have, but if you're into that, that should be no problem! Overall, amazing place and we will be going to all different Black Bear Diners in the future!
Burnt out on fish I was looking for a good spot a to get a classic breakfast and we landed on this spot. I did the steak and eggs and it was delicious and just what I was looking. This spot is 100 times better than Denny's or something and the service was amazing. Definitely would recommend this spot for breakfast.

The seafood is well priced for the area. I ordered to go orders for friends and it was 20.00 a plate, average.
We've been coming here for their breakfasts and it's always plentiful and delicious. \nTheir service is great and very attentive and helpful.\nWe like the atmosphere and the hometown feeling.
Great menu and food. Fun atmosphere. Great service. Easy parking. Better than Denny's.

Best. Food. Ever. We looked for breakfast as we were passing through Monterey on a road trip. Best choice we did. The food was amazing and our waiter Maria was an absolute delight to meet!

Our first trip to a diner and it did not disappoint! The food was delicious & generous. Reasonably priced. Our waitress was so friendly. Highly recommended!
Good food and large portions. Cozy interior design with severel Beats. The prices are reasonable. Had to wait a bit for the food.

3-30-25: Came to Black Bear in Monterey and the parking lot was full, S/O and I enter and people were waiting in the lobby for tables. I checked in and was told about 10 minutes. Shortly after we were seated. After looking at the menu we ordered from the Specials menu French toast with strawberry cream cheese filling, topped with Fresh strawberry and whipped cream, added 2 eggs scrambled and bacon. We also order from the dinner menu the Blackened Salmon with mash potatoes (turkey gravy) with green beans and a side salad with Dr Pepper and an ice tea to drink. The salad came and shortly after the meals. The French toast looked good and my S/O said everything was delicious she finished the whole plate. The blackened salmon was good they definitely use a lot of black pepper. Mash potatoes and green beans were nice and hot too and I finished my meal as well. Overall good experience with good service.
Had a wonderful dinner here with my son. The options are wonderful and we both craved a nice good pasta dish he had the Cubs penne with marinara and I had the adults dish chicken parmesan with pasta. Such a super good filling meal for the both of us. A great place to bring the family and the people who work there are very nice. Great food great place and I totally recommend it if your hungry!
Don't get the pasta. Stick to breakfast dishes. They are excellent
Good location, friendly and fast service. The interior is like any other Black Bear Diner -- cozy and clean. I ordered an eggs benedict, but was disappointed that my eggs were overcooked. The Hollandaise sauce was nice and fluffy though. Portions are large and hearty. The hot sauces, however, tasted one-note to me; they tasted like beans & chili. The Mama Burn is the sweetest sauce, but overall, the house spices do not offer any diverse flavor profiles.
We had breakfast here with 4 friends, on a Sunday 8am . The friendly waitress greeted us and let us know that it would be a while because she was the only server on. It did take quite a while, but wasn't her fault. They didn't have enough staff in for the amount of people that needed served. When our breakfast came out it was good. Portions are decent size. I was disappointed though because their menu did say they had gluten-free toast. Which she told me they never have. Prices quite high to us ( we aren't from West Coast). Good breakfast.
Family friendly place. We had dinner . Everybody was happy and relax. Kids told us a lot of stories !
The Diner is consistently themed to look like a lodge and has black bears and other related things hidden all over in the decor, cups, plates, etc. It makes for a very fun and immersive atmosphere. The food is plentiful and plates are huge. Their biscuits for breakfast are monstrous. They do have a few options for those who prefer lighter portions and the more health conscious, however the majority of their menu consists of large protions and heavy comfort foods. My husband and I went for breakfast, they don't have any gluten free toast or biscuit options, only a gluten free bun. I got a fruit cup which was only melon and cantaloupe. There were two grapes only. If I was rating the fruit cup alone I would give it two stars for the lack of variety and ripeness of the fruit, but it met my healthy breakfast requirements at least. The eggs, sausage, hash browns , and biscuits we had were very good. Way better than you would get at a Denny's. Staff was friendly, didn't linger around our table and gave us what we needed. Overall a satisfactory place to eat breakfast.
Classic diner, a couple steps above Dennys in all aspects, especially service. Cool dining room and good food. Pricing beats other diners as well.
It was a pretty good day for Black Bear. Our server, Andrea C was awesome--super friendly and helpful and she checked in on us regularly. My only complaint is that they don't usually get my eggs cooked right. Apparently, over medium eggs are hard for many restaurants to cook right, but I keep trying. :)
The server, Maria, was conscientious, thoughtful, and attentive during our visit. Great place to enjoy some diner style food.
Blackbear always delivers respectable portions and food is usually warm and ready to eat. The staff is lacking in edicate, but always attentive and quick with requests. I have observed questionable food handling on the line and by the foodservers but overall a decent meal.
This is a nice spot to stop for any meal and has a lot of parking, which is a big plus. We had a late breakfast here and it was good. The eggs benedict was my favorite of everything we tried. The homestyle potatoes were great too, they had good seasoning and veggies with them. The strip potatoes were very plain and didn't taste like they had any seasoning at all.

Really good. Actually reasonable price for area! Definitely had a outdoorsy interior which is not common in this area.
Black Bear Diner is one of my favorite restaurants in California but I was disappointed this last time when we did an online order pickup because the California Bacon Benedict I ordered didn’t have any bacon in it and the hash browns seemed very overcooked with a lot of it being burned and hard. Maybe they just had a new cook this time...
This is an edited review based on two back-to-back visits for dinner. First visit turned out as well as could be. No real complaints with the service or the food. The second night was the total opposite. The main dish came out within minutes of the salad and the corn muffin. That meant it was sitting on the table cooling down while I tried to finish off the salad. Well I compromised and ate only half the salad but by then, the main meal was down to room temperature. Not only that but the broccoli was so bitter it made brussel sprouts taste like candy. And I love broccoli in general. Also their homemade ranch dressing tasted more like mayonnaise. Then the portion size of the mashed potatoes was pretty tiny. This wss for a regular sized dinner meal. I ordered a "little less" sized dinner the night before and that serving of mashed potatoes was bigger. That doesn't make any sense. So if you eat here it seems like you'd be playing Russian roulette -- you won't know the quality of the meal until you get it.
The service was good, but the food not so much, at least in this experience. I got the 10 ounce steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. Was not a fan. The meat was very dry, and tasted unseasoned. But I did enjoy the cornbread that came with it, good with butter. I did not try any of their desserts, but they did look tasty.
Service was terrible. Food was good but don't expect a friendly server.
My wife and I had dinner on 8/21/2025 at Black Bear Diner in Monterey, and neither one of us liked our entrees. I had the Tri-Tip sandwich which just didn’t have a pleasant taste. It was tough and not pleasant to eat. This is my go to sandwich when I try a new restaurant, but this one wasn’t worth the cost I paid. My wife ordered the small Santa Maria Tri-Tip and didn’t eat much of it as she didn’t care for the taste either. Overall, it was an expensive dinner for food we didn’t like. We have eaten at other locations of this restaurant and liked it before, so maybe it was an off day.
Out of all the Black Bear Diner's I've eaten at the one in Seaside to me has the coolest environment. Whether you wanna sit at the counter, booth, table or need a small room for meetings or private gathering this Black Bear can accommodate it all. The staff was friendly but seemed a bit stress with the amount of guests that were eating there that day. The menu has sooooo many choices it's a little overwhelming! They have a GREAT dessert menu and there all pretty yummy. My Dad ordered Corn beef Hash and to be honest the corn beef hash was a little dry. The open face turkey sandwich was yummy but order extra gravy. Portions are ALWAYS BIG ...so come hungry or share a plate with a buddy. They also serve Prime Rib on certain days after 4pm!!
Waitress seemed to spread her sugar friendliness to everyone except me. Please work on being courteous and welcoming to everyone. Otherwise great food and a bit pricey.
We was on vacation in Monterey. I was craving beef pot roast. Found the Black Bear Diner on Google or yelp. The waitress was nice. They had good service from her. previous I ordered the Little less of the pot roast. It was delicious, but it was mostly gravy, little bit of vegetables and 2 or 3 small pieces of meat for $15. It wasn't filling. I wonder if I'll get bigger 3 pieces of meat if I ordered the bigger helping for $22.? I might try again at I asked if they had like garlic bread to go with the stew, instead of more vegetables. I thought the stew would have enough vegetables, but didn't! The waitress gave me the bread. It was so greasy. I didn’t like it. I gave it to my husband. I might try a different dish next time if we go to a Black Bear diner.
Good setting with large and roomy areas inside. A juke box plays oldies continuously. breakfast food average. Corn beef hash was more like dry bacon hash. Ham steak excessively salty. Service …

Slow service. Wrong food brought out. The food that came out was not close to the standards of BBD both times I went there. Other locations are great; I've had really good service and great food at other BBD locations. This location is terrible. Give it a miss and go to Butter House instead; they are excellent for breakfast and lunch.
To Whom It May Concern, My mom and I recently visited black bare establishment for breakfast during a road trip to the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery. While the aroma in your restaurant was enticing, we were unfortunately very disappointed with our meal. We both ordered the Grizz breakfast. I requested over-easy eggs, but they arrived sunny-side up with runny whites, and the bacon was overcooked. The hash browns were also undercooked and lacked flavor. My mother's experience was even worse; her eggs appeared watery, her bacon was burnt, and her pancakes were raw in the middle. Although she asked for the pancakes to be cooked longer, the new batch was still raw. Neither of us finished our food. It seemed as though the food was cooked on high heat, resulting in everything being undercooked. We chose not to send our food back, as we were unsure of the condition in which it would be returned. Given our experience, I would not recommend this place to others. Sincerely, Sad fatboy.

My first visit here was perfectly fine and good. Excellent food, service, good staff. They were even good and friendly to my service animal as she was well behaved. Upon my return today, they weren't good to her, so I have to leave this review. I love Black Bear Dinner, but that was unacceptable. I will not be returning to this location and you can considery business lost. Good riddance.
We will not be eating here again. And we do not recommend. Find a small local eatery in town, and you will have better quality food and more enjoyable experience than this place. Quality control was lacking as the food was absolutely under par, under cooked, and practically inedible. Country potatoes were not cooked throughly and tasted sour. Avocados in California Omelette were hard, not ripe, and could not eat them. House salad came out brown and veggies appeared dry and old. Ordered a chicken tender that served on a plate in a pool of fryer oil.
1-Star Review Dear Black Bear Owners and Management Team, I recently took my family to the Monterey Black Bear Diner for breakfast, expecting a welcoming and clean environment to enjoy a meal together. Unfortunately, our experience was far from that. As a father, cleanliness is extremely important to me, especially when dining out with my children. However, I was absolutely disgusted by the state of this restaurant. I accidentally dropped my keys and, to my horror, the carpet was sticky and filthy. This prompted me to look around more closely, and what I saw was unacceptable—crumbs scattered under and around our table, and floors that clearly had not been swept or vacuumed. It was evident that the staff does not make any effort to maintain carpet cleanliness while guests are dining. This level of neglect made it impossible for my family to enjoy our meal. It is clear that the facility is not being properly cared for, and based on what I witnessed, I have serious concerns about the overall hygiene of carpet cleaning and sanitation of this restaurant. I will never give Black Bear Diner my business again. A restaurant that does not prioritize cleanliness—especially in a family-friendly environment—is not a place I can support or recommend. I sincerely hope management takes these concerns seriously because no paying customer should have to experience this level of disregard for basic upkeep. **********Follow-Up Update – 02/20/2025********** I have reached out to the Black Bear team via email 3 DAYS AGO, as listed below, and have yet to receive any response. The lack of communication and follow-through is highly unprofessional. I expect a timely resolution and will continue to follow up as necessary.
Ordered biscuits and gravy and it came completely white. No meat in it. When I asked a server about it, she told me it is there. Blanded in. I know if meat is there or not when I see it. Don't recommend
Worst Black Bear Diner we have ever been to. Food was uncooked and awful dining experience of our life. This place better be shuttered down rather than providing awful food
Worst cooks ever !!! OMG My chicken fried steak was burnt and crispy even the gravy couldnt help , eggs were not very good looking , and the kids pancakes were bigger than large platter + 45 minutes to get it !! I dont recommend at all not breakfast anyway !!! Monday morning cooks there suck !!! Meal = $65 Waitress was cool , left $7 tip !!
I can't rate anything but the service which I'm not gonna give it a star , I walked in at 11:20 am while visiting the area ,the hostess sat us down right away our drink was brought out a coffee and juice that was it ,we walked out at 11:55 am of course walked to the register paid . It was not that busy since the staff had plenty of time to be BSng with each other around the kitchen area we counted atleast 6 servers not 1 approached our table. I blame management for not managing. Not happy with my visit .
Its Been I’d Say 20 years agoThey Used to Have Great Breakfasts The CARMEL Location Was Great. Then They Build the Monterey Store. I was Going there Till after 2 Breakfasts were NOT Consistent. I went Back for Dinner. I look at the Menu. I order POT ROAST. When It Came I Noticed String beans Must be From a Can. The Meat Was Tender but Bland, Gravy Watery I guess because it Mixed with the Potatoes which were undercooked onions and Carrots. I told My Server She asked if I wanted something to Replace the Beans I said No. I didn’t Finish The Entree. I looked at the Dessert Menu I Get the BANANA CREAM PIE That was Fabulous. Best Part of My Dinner. My Server was Good Tho IM NOT RETURNING
I couldn't eat it - the steak, egg, hash browns every day special. I asked for medium - it was rare and very very salty. Ate about a fourth The hash browns and eggs - tasted like the cooking oil. I just couldn't do. But I wasn't hungry anymore after my appetite was destroyed. So there's that.
All of the servers here a great. Too bad the food is straight GARBAGE. Undercooked, hamburger meat is like glue or plastic, had to spit out every other bite. Worse than fast food. For the prices, just go eat at McDonald's. Breakfasts here are disgusting. Watery eggs, SOGGY half cooked bacon, half cooked potatoes. Half cooked pancakes. Even the toast is plain white, NOT TOAST. Fast food quality for triple the price!
We did not have our rental car until later in the day, so we ordered breakfast for delivery on their own site, which they still outsource to Uber. They gave someone else's order to the Uber delivery guy. I caught it because the bag felt light and we had ordered 2 boxes plus a drink. The hostess did not believe me at first and put me on hold for several minutes, until the driver returned back with the bag that had someone else's name on it. There was zero apology. The driver was kind enough to return and re-deliver the correct order. They did not apologize to him either. We received our $55+ worth of food and due to tripling the time of the wait now, the food was COLD. We also only received 1 set of utensils and no condiments, like ketchup. The $20 burger, which I ordered rare, was closer to well done. The fries were soggy and sad. The breakfast was the better option - the eggs and sausage were decent, the potatoes were semi-crispy, but the biscuit was dry as cardboard. No jam included either. Overall, an extremely disappointing order. Not knowing the area, we later came to this diner and waited 5 minutes to be seated, but no one ever came. We then went next door to Grandma's Kitchen and had a lovely experience there.
