Literally the best omakase at this price point. 10 piece was around $75/person. All the fish is prepared to perfection and literally melts in your mouth. You almost dont want to swallow through food since it's so good.

Social media is one of those tools where you can either be lead astray or shown to some amazing gems. I've had more duds than stars, but I'm so happy to state Ohshima is an exceptional sushi restaurant with an experience close to what you'd have in Japan. Let me take you to an omakase experience at Ohshima. Service Something to note is they do not do any American style rolls. They have a clear sign stating this and it gives you a clear idea this isn't a place with volcano rolls or some other baked California roll. They also do not have soy sauce available. How they prepare and create their dishes have exactly the intended taste they mean to give you. The creation is intentional and is reminiscent of how they make food in Japan. Service was very attentive. The servers were watching each diner so they could quick take dishes away so it wouldn't clutter the space. Even though we ate at the bar it was clear to see how focused the servers were to the diners' needs. The chefs were also entertaining. Of course it depends on who you get but the best experience for omakase is to sit in front of the sushi chef and let them do their magic. Dinner Service As mentioned, we ate here for the omakase. Omakase is when you let the chef create the dinner for you based off multiple types of dishes, in this case sushi. They do omakase here in 10, 12, or 13 pieces. This review is specifically for the 12 piece. Here's the dinner in order: Appetizer - Fish ceviche: nice spice and freshness, could totally see this go well with a tortilla chip haha. 1st - Sea bream with matcha salt: light & delicate with a gentle lingering taste at the end. 2nd - Bluefin tuna: large cut with a beautiful ruby color. The meat is tender and has a nice chew with little resistance. 3rd - Jumbo Hokkaido scallop with a plum paste: pure freshness with a burst of flavor from the plum paste that disappears as quick as it appears. 4th - Amberjack (kanpachi) with marinated jalapeño on top: a more dexterous bite, the jalapeño makes a solo note when first tasted but slowly merged into the flavor of the amberjack. 5th - Seabass with yuzu kosho: a slight spice with the yuzu kosho, the citrus brings out the natural flavors of the seabass which melt gently into your mouth at the end. 6th - Cherry salmon: a vibrant orange hue shimmering in the light, the fattiness of this cut of fish feels rich in flavor. 7th - Japanese butterfish with shiso leaf and onion minced on top: the fishiness is very obvious, but the garnish helps cut the flavor at initial taste before it takes over. 8th - Toro: the most decadent fish of all. Slightly sweet, fatty, and instantly starts breaking down in your mouth, the flavor is closer to a fatty piece of beef than fish in all the right ways. 9th - Opal eye snapper with shiso leaf and spicy sour soybean paste: well balanced flavor with a brightness from the shiso leaf. 10th - Seared black cod with sweet soybean sauce: a sweet cut with a smoky flavor from the sear, a wonderfully composed flavor anyone can easily enjoy happily. 11th - Black snapper with truffle oil on top: the truffle was more restrained than I expected. The snapper was tasty, but was expecting a little more decadence from this piece that I didn't get. Not bad but slightly disappointing. 12th - Botan ebi: fresh shrimp from San Francisco, the final piece of the 12 piece omakase. Fresh, chewy, and slightly sweet. This sushi is meant to leave you with a satisfying last note. Conclusion An amazing dinner service with hawkeye attention to detail, from the sushi chefs to the servers. It was great to have a meal where it felt like we were taken care from start to finish. It was the closest I've gotten to eating as I did in Japan and I'm excited to return when the craving hits me once more.

The best omakase deal in Orange County. The affordable price doesn't mean lower quality. All the fish was fresh, the rice was prepared to perfection, and the flavors were great The sushi chef was mindful, educational, and skilled, too! The uni spaghetti was about too rich for me.

Kostik Quetzalli

Amazingly accommodating staff! I was able to enjoy a worry-free dinner due to their expert knowledge of the menu and ingredients. The cuttlefish sashimi is beyond belief and you absolutely should try the green tea flan!

I’ve been coming to Ohshima for years, and even with the change in ownership, the quality has stayed impressively consistent. The jukusei sushi is really well done, the shari well-seasoned and balanced. Their yellowtail carpaccio is a standout, and the kizami wasabi adds a nice kick (it feels housemade) —definitely worth trying. Still one of the most reliable sushi spots in OC

Went to Ohshima with my family and had an amazing experience ordering omakase with a few self-selections too. The pricing is a bit high, but shows in the food's amazing quality. Service was great as well with customers pretty respectful of the quiet ambience. Bit of a hole-in-the-wall place with small seating, so large parties might not work well. Sake clams had a small kick of alcohol that took my family by surprise. Had Asian glow before the main course even arrived. The seared black cod and every cut of tuna were my favorites. I've gone back a few times with each time being just as nice as the last. Would definitely recommend this place for more special occasions.

Overall Experience: A cozy sushi spot with a calm ambiance, attentive service, and high-quality fish, offering a well-paced omakase experience at the bar, though first-time guests may benefit from clearer menu guidance. Location/Parking: Located in a strip mall with plenty of parking spots as nearby businesses are not that busy. Reservation: Easy to make a reservation via phone during their open hours. Ambiance: Restaurant isn't big, 13 bar seats and 7 tables that fit 2-4 people. Very calm instrumental music playing in the background. Guests varied from couples to families with kids. Service: If sitting at the bar, your main server is the sushi chef behind the bar. After sitting down, I was asked "Omakase okay?" by the chef but wasn't asked how many pieces(they have options of 10/12/13) or given any explanation on their offerings. It wasn't after scanning the QR and hearing the parties next to me(who sounded like they have been there before) ask for the 13 piece option that I realized there were options. This can be improved as not everyone is a returning customer and may like to know that they can choose. The other servers will help with drink orders and anything from the kitchen. The chef paced the experience well and adjusted to serving the Sweet Shrimp when the Shrimp Miso soup was brought out. He was attentive to refilling the ginger on my plate as I finished it. Servers were attentive to providing me with refills for my hot tea whenever it was empty. Food: Everyone, at least at the bar, seemed to have a "ceviche" for a starter on the house. However, the fish felt fully cooked compared to what is known for a ceviche in other cultures. 13 piece Omakase -Sea Bream -Bluefin Tuna -Scallop -Amberjack -Sea Bass -Cherry Salmon -Japanese Butterfish -Sweet Shrimp(option for the head to be cooked in miso soup or deep fried) -Toro -Big Yellowtail(winter only from Japan) -Black Cod -Striped Jack -Santa Barbara Uni My favorites were the Cherry Salmon, Toro, and Black Cod. The Black Cod is seared and had a great dual texture of crispy on the outside but so buttery on the inside. Value: As of February 2025, the 13 piece omakase with miso soup is $118. The hot tea was $3 and came with unlimited refills. Definitely worth it for the quality of the fish and the service overall provided by the staff. Extras: If sitting at the bar, there is a 10 piece minimum per person and the first 10 pieces will be omakase. If sitting at a table, the servers will give you a sheet menu that you can mark directly on for your order.

I've been coming here since a friend's suggestion last year and I am never disappointed in the slightest. Every piece of sushi I've had is so fresh and flavorful. They apparently get a lot of their fish straight from Japan. My favorite appetizers are the steamed abalone and monkfish liver. I would be happy only eating those, but you would be crazy to not get the omakase here. I got the garlic buttered clams on the house one time and it was also delicious. My very first visit had a long wait time outside but nowadays I just call in advance to reserve a seat. This is my first choice for sushi in Southern California.

I’ve been going here for a decade and a half. It is my go to high quality and authentic sushi place since my college days. Ohshima is as good as you are going to get with Sushi. If you think you can get salmon anywhere else, ohshima offers something different. The cherry salmon they have is heavenly. What you cannot miss is the love orange clam and black cod sushi. I’ll always come back for more.

Phenomenal. Best sushi in Orange County. Richard was our chef and he did an amazing job. Recommend sitting at the sushi bar for the best experience with the chefs. Will be coming back here for every future special occasion. Also the sake selection was great!

Excellent sushi restaurant hidden away. Omakase was fantastic. The fish was very fresh and the service was great.

One of the best Omakase experiences in Orange County. If you have a chance definitely sit at the sushi bar to have the full experience. As fresh of fish you can get and properly treated sushi rice. Huge variety of catches, decent sake collection, and select beers. Prices are reasonable for this quality of food. You can tell they put a lot of attention to detail with their precision and patience. As authentic as you can get here in SoCal. Highly recommend! Definitely try to make reservation via phone to avoid the long waits.

We’ll where do I begin? This is definitely a hidden gem. Didn’t even know this was around the corner from my house. The atmosphere is soothing dim lighting and the ambience is great. The quality of fresh fish is so good be prepared for your taste buds to be amazed. This brings me back to when I lived in Japan. So many memories of great quality food cooked to perfection the zenzai and the chocolate bar is so delightful. The customer service is so good everyone here is so attentive and welcoming other people who sat next to us highly recommended this amazing spot. If you want some high quality food and sushi come here

This is my holy grail for sushi!!! I am not kidding when I say I think about this place at least once a month 😂🤤 The omakase here is such good value it’s insane, I mean come on just look at the pics!! 🫶 The omakase here is a bit frustrating to book as you can only call for reservations between 5:00-5:30 pm and their phone lines are extremely busy. However, if you’re able to book a reservation, it is so worth it because you can avoid the 2-2.5 hr wait times 🙏🏻 The fish here is always consistently high quality and the sushi chefs are always kind and generous. The ambiance is nice and intimate especially when seated at the sushi bar. I highly recommend ordering the seared black cod & cherry salmon a la carte because 1 piece just isn’t enough 🙈 Each piece of fish is amazing and I can’t wait to come back!! 🫶

OMG! My #1 best authentic sushi place ever ♥️♥️♥️ after eating at this place, I haven’t found another sushi place that could replace it. Always worth waiting! I recommend for special occasions and dinner with friends or family. The ambient is nice and cozy. Some fish are from Japan and market price sushi are delicious 🤤 Price can be a bit expensive, but it’s worth every penny at this location. Highly recommended 🙌

Amazing omakasi! Great little gem but can very challenging to find a spot here. I've been trying to eat here for years. This place has some of the best fish I've ever eaten. The chefs prepare everything with heart and their presentation brings out the wonderful flavor of the fish. No need for soy sauce because each fish is prepared in such a way to bring out the most flavor. Blue fin toro was such a treat.

J

Best sushi place I've been to in Orange county and LA area. Their fish is very fresh and they add some sauce on top that's delicious. I highly recommend the cherry salmon and the baked tuna tendon. Make sure to get 45 minutes before they open or you might have to wait a couple hours.

S
Steve McGuffey

Wow. This is the best REAL sushi, not the American sushi that you may find. Had the omakase, each piece was delicious imported fish from Japan, Japan saki and Japanese beer. All fantastic. Be prepared for $100+ a person for sitting at the bar. But it was worth it. Reservations a must!

J
Jonathan Hunt

The Omakase is very good. Excellent selection of fish. More selection than even more expensive places I have been to. The staff is very nice and professional. The other items on the menu are good too. The wasabi squid appetizer is delicious. Very good for a quiet and intimate date. Best in groups of 2. Larger than that and it is more convenient to sit at a table, but Omakase is better at the sushi bar.

Ohshima Sushi is a hidden gem with a rich 17+ year history. The restaurant boasts affordable yet exceptionally high-quality sushi. The authenticity shines through with skilled Japanese chefs crafting each dish. A true haven for sushi enthusiasts seeking both tradition and value.

This was one of the best sushi experiences I have ever had. You must try this place! We went on a weekday so it wasn't too bad. Their omakase menu is plenty delicious and filling. Their fresh water eel is amazing as well.

This place is Michelin rated meaning it’s definitely a good place for sushi, and indeed it is. I’m sometimes afraid to order omakase because I never know if what the chef likes will be what I like. This place doesn’t disappoint. The chef knows what you will like as well as what everyone else will like. Uncanny!

A
Aftab Khan

Awesome omakase! Not cheap, but you’re getting a premium experience - some of the thickest cuts of fish I’ve seen in a piece of sushi (particularly their Toro, and the live shrimp). Everything was super fresh and flavorful.

B
Brandon Lacey

Just call ahead (5pm-530pm) and try the sushi. I have only had the sushi so I can't vouch for anything else. I just noticed I hadn't written a review. This was one of the best sushi places I have ever been to. Idk what's up with the other reviews who say otherwise, maybe it was just a bad day for them, but when I went it was amazing. Chef's choice is the way to go if you LOVE sushi. Might not be for the casual sushi person because the fish you have never heard of might be a bit strong. I believe it was $45 a person for 8 pieces which again sushi lovers will understand and happily accept once trying it. They have a neat little bio of the place too on their website. It was the awards and the bio that originally won me over.

best omakase in the OC, possibly So Cal. I usually can afford to only eat here about 1 or 2x per year, as when I go, I camp out at that sushi bar for like 1.5 hours until they close for either lunch or dinner. Keep in mind, this is no longer a hidden gem, and too many peeps KNOW of this delicious place. Sushi is ALWAYS fresh. Flavors are excellent! Only get one piece though per order. Also know, you ain't getting any soy sauce either unless the chef adds it to your order as the plate needs. It is chef's choice first and then you can order off menu next. there are probably no more than a dozen and a 1/2 seats at the sushi bar, and I think no more than 6 tables inside, so small. But well worth the wait. Only 2 or 3 peeps can sit at the sushi bar in a party. If you want to sit there quicker, best to get there about 30 to 45 minutes prior to opening to guarantee a seat at the sushi bar! ENJOY!

Chilled glass. Good beer. Paper straw has structural integrity. No. 1, 4, 5 and 9 were delicious.

This is one of my favorite Omakase spot in Southern California. We ordered Omakase chef special with ten different fish . Including Toro, halibut, fois gras , cherry Salmon etc . The food taste so amazing. The sushi is spectacularly good so fresh so delicious, best quality Sushi I’ve had . This place is super small , before you come you’d better make reservation.

A
Austin Ferron

One of the best sushi places I have ever been to! They have nothing but the best quality fish. They serve omakase which means chefs choice. So if you sit at the sushi bar, you get 8 pieces of fish of what the chef thinks is best that day. Sounds risky but I have never been disappointed.

B
Bau&Hoa

Sat at the bar. Experiencing the chef making wethe sushi was very great. Sushi was delicious and felt quality of seafood was amazing. I enjoyed the side dishes also. Fried fish bones was great if you like fried fish bones texture.

m
matthew piercey

Fish is amazing. They keep it original and simple. If you're looking for American style rolls with a bunch of eel sauce and mayo, and want to mix your wasabi in your soy etc. this is NOT your place. This is traditional and excellent fresh fish. Probably the best place in Orange County.

D
Diana Chi

This is one of the best places for omakase or sushi in general. Everything is very fresh and delicious. And the price is very reasonable compared to other similar restaurants. Highly recommend getting a reservation or be prepared to wait.

M
Mai Tran

The best omakase one can get in orange county no doubt. Can't really describe, must be experienced. After the 8 piece omakase at the bar, we ordered 3 of our choice and one more of the chef's choice. 12 piece each person. The bill for 2 before tax was $90. Best come as 2 to get seated easily at the bar.

One of the best sushi places I’ve been to in a long time. Amazingly fresh fish and very reasonably priced for high end sushi. It would be double the price in LA

M
Maureen St Georges

Went for lunch and ate the 10 piece omakase. It was delicious. The fish portions are very generous and so french, melt in your mouth. We added unagi at the end as a "dessert" and it was sooo good. Highly recommended

My favorite sushi spot in the OC. Small little location that serves great options and an affordable omakase which always magnificent. If you have the option to sit at the table or the bar, I would definitely recommend the bar for the full experience. It can be difficult to make reservations as they only take phone calls for reservations between 5:00-5:30.

L

Perfect omakase! Take a reservation is a must.

L
Lauren Zou

Otoro was so amazing and decadent. We ordered an extra order ($34). Also loved the live shrimp that came in the 13 piece omakase (also comes in 12 piece omakase). Get the shrimp head fried! Kampachi was delicious. Tamago had scallions and was very flavorful. We were seated right away.

E
Eric Tsang

Excellent omakase and great value. $45 pp for 8+ courses. Recommend calling for reservations a week in advance. Walk-ins are allowed but expect to wait around 2 hours.

S
Stephanie Chau

Make reservations! you can call at most one week in advanced and only between 5-5:30pm to make reservations. There's almost always a long (~20-30) people line when they open at 5:30pm for dinner time. Do not arrive late to your reservation as they'll only hold your reservation for 10 minutes. The food and sashimi was PHENOMENAL. This was one of our more expensive meal but totally worth it. I wish we had time to try everything but good thing we got the 13 piece omakase ($85/person). One of my favorites we ordered was the yellowtail jalapeño carpaccio, which is a plate of thinly sliced raw fish 🤤

Ohshima is hands down the best sushi restaurant in Orange County (and maybe California …?). This is an authentic sushi restaurant serving nigiri, sashimi and a few basic rolls – none of those extravagant, over-the-top sushi rolls covered in sauce. Here – it’s about the fish. It’s ridiculously fresh, cut perfectly, seasoned just right, and carefully plated. Whether it’s your first time or your 50th time, you absolutely won’t go wrong with the Omakase, which is the chef’s daily special based on whatever premium fresh fish is in. Seriously, do yourself a favor and GET IT. My wife and I also like to get the uni (sea urchin) spaghetti after the fresh fish to satisfy that garlic-buttery part of our palette. Unless you go to Ohshima when it first opens, don’t expect to get seated very quickly. The first time my wife and I went, we waited 2 hours for the both of us on a Tuesday evening! We learned to do it right by going just before they opened – and even then you should expect to see a line already forming. Are you still reading? You should already be eating here!!! :)

R
Richard Park

One of the best omakase I’ve had in Orange County. The sushi was smooth and fresh. The sardine and mackerel sushi were not fishy at all which is hard to get. We had the 13 piece omakase and additional pieces of yellowtail belly, sardine and mackerel. The uni spaghetti, miso soup and fried shrimp are also excellent. Highly recommend. I don’t think I can eat sushi at any other place in OC.

S
Seal

Came here with the family, and luckily we got a table- though it was at the opening time. We got there 5 min before opening and there was already a line. Ordered Omakase for everyone and everyone was happy. All the sushies were super fresh and delicious. Definiately one of the good sushi places Ive tried on so far. I'd want to go back, if I can get a sit on the bar without waiting for a long time.

A
Allison Tran (MochiBunny)

The sushi here is the absolute best! Quality everything! The staff is sweet and accommodating, and the fish is only the top notch from Japan so it's authentic. I noticed a majority of the staff were Japanese and could speak fluently as they were speaking Japanese to each other. The place is small (which is why there's a long wait for the place) and dimly lit. The bar is most popular as there is apparently exclusive items that are served only at the bar. Despite the place being pricy, it was quite worth it. Please come if you'd like to experience the best and are willing to splurge. Be sure to also come before opening time. Anything you try is guranteed to taste amazing!

was craving omakase the other day and decided to make the drive to ohshima for some FRESH sushi. its a super affordable price point and you can also opt for the 10 pc omakase (everything minus the last 4 items) for ~$60, which is a REALLY good price for omakase. i was pretty satisfied after the 10 pcs but just HAD to do it for the sweet shrimp and uni. the fish was really fresh and a lot of them are flown in from japan. my favorites were definitely the uni, seared black cod, and the butterfish.

A
Arcade G

The best sushi I've ever had in my life. It's authentic Japanese sushi in Orange County! They serve everything preseasoned so there is no need for soy sauce. The sushi here is heavenly and definitely worth the little up in price compared to other sushi places. If you're craving sushi this is the place to go. (Possible with a reservation but not necessary)

J
Jeff Chong

One of the best omakase places hands down. I've been here many times and have never been let down. My favorites are the black cod and Toro. You can make reservations here but you have to call between 5 and 5:30pm. If there is a busy tone then keep trying. Sometimes there are a lot of people calling in. During the COVID-19 time they are doing take out only with nigiri and omakase sets being the only menu items. The omakase varies from 10/12/13 pieces. Overall, even with it only being take out, this is still a great experience.

M
Marnie Lux

The best Japanese restaurant in Orange. Very expensive but hey, if money is no object, this is it. Omakase lunch is $80. Do it.

Best Omakase I've had! I'm afraid of leaving a good review because I want it all for myself. This small gem always has a wait time.

J

So delicious, 8 out of 10 I’ll be honest 7 years ago it was much better. Long lines that it took hours to get in if you were not there before 4:30… now not so much of a problem to get in. Like I said bring honest the last few months it’s starting to get better back to the original ways.. please continue with the progress

C

Probably the best sushi I've had in North America. I compare to places in Vancouver and have had sushi in Japan multiple times at higher end places. Had the omakse menu and enjoyed all the courses. If you sit at the bar, you get it piece by piece as it is made. I highly suggest this. Make reservations too.

K

If you want high quality sushi, this place is the one you are looking for. The toro sushi was phenomenal and it will be pricey...however you are paying for quality here. This is a Michelin restaurant so it did not dissapoint. I would arrive early because there is usually a wait here. Other than that too notch sushi.

Best sushi in town. Get the omakase at the bar and finish dinner off with uni and amaebi.

Very affordable omakase experience. I got the 13 piece omakase, everything was good. Also got the uni pasta which was really good. Their hot dishes had pork and beef option as well.

Been going there since 2018. Is one of these places where when I saw they got the Michelin rating in 2019 my only thought was "of course they did, totally earned" food is sumptuous!!! Customer service is great, dropped my chopsticks on the floor and the waitress got there before me and handed me a new set... What else can be said?!

A
Alysa Nguyen

Omakasa (chef decides) is the way to go when you eat at this sushi joint, and decides to sit at the bar. I tried 10 dishes and to be honest they were all heavenly, except for one which was the UNi (sea urchin) dish which I've been informed. is an acquired taste. If you go here, be sure to try 1. sweet shrimp and get the head fried (so yummy) 4. Spanish Mackerel 2. Toro 5. neptune 3. sea bream 6. cherry salmon **** shirako fish milt, taste so good, until the chef told us, it was fish testicles. EWWWWWWWWWWWW and yummy at the same time ** call for reservation so you can get a seat at the sushi bar

A bit odd that I haven’t been here since living in OC….. but alas here I am. Have to say this might be might new go-to spot for sushi! Very reasonably priced and good quality sushi especially for omakase. Granted there’s no non-sushi items, but that’s reflected in the price. All the fish were fresh and tasty which is actually quite apparent in the photos which was what led me to try this place in the first place. And it did not disappoint. Reservation is a bit tricky and if you don’t reserve be prepared for 1hr wait at the least. One minor complaint is the lack of draft beer :/ Other than that, It was a great meal and I’ll definitely be back soon.

I had Omakase here as a surprise and was surprised for real knowing this restaurant was nominated/got Michelin 1 star. This is my first time having Omakase but from the previous reviews, this restaurant has the best experience. The food and service are both really nice. The restaurant is small and set up a little dark makes it private for people sitting around you. We sit at the bar for Omakase but they also offer a la carte at the table. Should reserve before coming if you don't want to wait in line since this place is legit. 10 out of 10 for the food quality and the kindness of the chef. We had: 1. Appetizer & Salad: something sour and salad 2. Cherry Salmon 3. Black Cod 4. Blue Fin Tuna 5. Unagi (eel) 6. Sword fish 7. Some other types 8. Miso soup We ordered out of Omakase: 9. Live Sweet Shrimp - super sweet, definitely should try 10. Uni - because I'm a fan 11. Deep fried chicken cartilage An impressive Omakase experience!

Amazing Tokyo style sushi in the heart of Orange county with omakase service at the sushi bar and kitchen service at the tables. Great service. Delicious sushi. Fraction of the price compared to same style of sushi at other places. Good deal. Not only do they have a good variety of quality seafoodi available, but they are also willing to customize for your palette. Our friend wasn't eating the rice, so they made a sashimi plate for her. Reservations suggested most days. Call exactly one week prior between 5 pm and 5:30 pm to make reservation.

On the pricey side, but probably the best sushi in the area for sure. Attentive service, in a Japanese-ish space. Wait can be insane, or at least it used to be in the past pre-pandemic. First time back since pandemic and was able to get a table with no reservations. Hate thinking about dinner, so ordered the longer Omakase, some ankimo and other rolls. I'd recommend it, but be prepare to spend money.

What an experience! From booking the reservation to actually dining at Ohshima. Reservations: Call the restaurant from 5-5:30pm to book a dinner reservation. After 62 calls, I managed to talk to someone at the restaurant and secured a 5:30pm reservation. There's a 10 minute grace period if you're running late. Arrival: I arrived at 5:30pm and there was a line that wrapped toward the chicken shop in the plaza. The hostess will check you in if you had a reservation. If you're waiting in line for dinner without a reservation, anticipate a wait between 1-1.5 hours. Dinner: We opted for the chefs omakase (10 pieces) and ordered some extras at the end. We had the following for dinner: Sea bream Medium toro Scallop Amberjack Sea bass Cherry salmon John Dory Bluefin Tuna Black Cod Japanese Butterfish Uni Sweet Shrimp Everything was absolutely delicious! The nigiri was fresh and took you to flavor town with each bite. The sushi here is glazed with soy or sea salt and yuzu. You could taste the fresh natural flavors from the seafood selection for the night. The bill came out to ~ $210 after tax for the (2) chefs 10 piece omokase, (2) sweet shrimp, (2) uni and one fried chicken cartilage. Definitely worth dining here despite the painstaking reservations. I highly recommend dining here if you're looking for a date night or celebrating a special occasion. Ohshima, I'll be back! Looking forward to making another 60+ calls to dine here.

Great food, great service! Perfect for our anniversary celebration. The chefs and servers didn't know we were celebrating and the way they treated us felt like they knew. The food was phenomenal! Great omakase experience!

I had an Omakase with an additional Tsubugai (Neptune), Kinme (Alfonsino?), Tamago, shishito appetizer, mushroom appetizer, and an apple tart. Everything was really fresh and the slices on the fish were ridiculously thick! I really recommend coming here for the omakase and ala carte orders only. The appetizer and dessert are skip-able. I did see that they had karaage fugu, or puffer fish. Service was okay, water was never filled until after the meal.

This place is really authentic and high quality if you're looking for traditional Japanese style sushi. I ordered the chef choice nigiri and 2 extra pieces and everything was excellent! It's a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Luckily we got seated right away, but I suggest making a reservation if you're coming at a potentially busier time. We had several different dishes and all of them were very good, including desserts. Definitely a hidden gem!

Right now it's a automated kiosk to order drinks only with some seating inside and basically zero else. No real service. Food is "coming soon". Parking can be tough some times during the day. Overall we have been here three times and the drinks are perfection. Matcha is so so so good here. Get the extra scoop! 🍵 Excited to see how they keep growing this place.

This small sushi restaurant may not have the luxury fancy interior decor but the food beats out pretty much all the high end sushi restaurants. The fish selection, grade and quality is incredible. Sushi rice is prepared right and very light and perfect compliment to raw fish. Sashimi just melts in your mouth. You don't need soy sauce here as the fish is already marinaded and prepped to be eaten right away.

I came to this place because I heard it had authentic Japanese chefs. Keep in mind, because of this marketing, as well as the fact that they import their fish from Japan, the prices are going to be sky high. It was like $5 for one piece of nigiri, or $30 for a fish collar. This place is very popular, so make sure to make a reservation or come like 10min before they open, as people will line up outside the restaurant. Getting that out of the way… It was a great restaurant in terms of the Japanese vibe and authenticity. The chefs are indeed Japanese and you can ask them questions about the dishes which they will answer skillfully. We did not go here for sushi, though there were many people ordering omakase here. We ordered a variety of their other dishes, including two fish collars (salmon and young yellowtail), the crab stuffed salmon, tempura, and liver. The highlight for me was the salmon collar. Fatty and moist, it was easily the most delicious dish. It far surpassed the young yellowtail, which wasn’t as fatty and tasted fishier. The tempura came out hot, but it had such thick batter that I was overwhelmed by the oily taste. A thinner batter would’ve been better to let the shrimp shine. The stuffed salmon was okay. The crab inside was yummy, but the salmon on the edge was not. I did not eat the liver so I can’t say whether that was good. I’d like to one day come back for their omakase experience, where I can talk to the chefs at the bar.

This is a legit omakase restaurant. When I eat omakase, I prefer to sit at the bar so my pieces come out one by one. The temperature of the fish is right and the rice is still slightly warm or room temperature. For a larger group of 6, we had to sit at a table. Luckily they still have Americanized sushi like avocado hand rolls for the kids. They have options for omakase. We opted for the 13 pieces included uni, amaebi and Toro. The uni was Santa Barbara uni. Very yummy Japanese. The cod was small and not as fresh. I probably would skip the cod. The desserts were additional. We ordered hot red bean with mochi, chocolate brownie ish cake with vanilla smoothie. They were nice to give us extra vanilla smoothie so everyone could try the dessert. I like flan so the green tea flan was dense enough and was enjoyable. And hot dessert is my friend.

Great tasting quality fish! As with any sushi place, it depends on the fish. My cousin said it's hit or miss...which is true. I didn't have the tastiest fish I've ever had, but it was good. The sushi chefs there knew what they were doing, and delivered a good tasting meal.

Food is always good and price is reasonable. Excellent quality of fish and also very consistent. But always long line. Also you don't want to be last group because everyone wants to go home towards end of the day and don't expect any good service from the sushi chefs but restaurant services are very good.

Best sushi joint in the OC, period. It's definitely costly, but the food is amazing. Given it's popularity, expect a fairly long wait time. I've sat at a table and ordered, but this place really shines when you're at the bar doing Omakase. Again, expensive, but well worth a trip to treat yourself to something amazing.

After coming here for awhile, I thought I would write a new review. Ohshima definitely has one of the best omakase experiences in OC, but I have had a couple of bad experiences when the owner ends up serving me so it doesn't get 5 stars. If you order omakase at a table it's around $40/person, at the bar it's around $50/person. I always sit at the bar and usually add on sweet shrimp (choose the miso soup option) and uni because it's so good. I would recommend being seated closer to the door because the sushi chef at the end is my favorite and doesn't serve the sushi too fast, and you also won't get served by the owner since she is usually at the stand by the bathroom. TIPS: *Reservations are taken from 5-5:30PM for the following week by phone only. *Sit at the bar, you get your sushi one piece at a time instead of all at once which makes the omakase experience much better. *If you are celebrating a birthday let them know and they will bring out a warm chocolate cake with vanilla shake shots. *If you want to sample some sake before deciding on a bottle, be sure to specifically mention that and make sure it's complimentary because we were charged $16 for 2 samples by the owner when we were never charged before. *It's a very small casual restaurant, so no need to dress up.

one of my favorite sushi restaurants. however, the reservation process is tedious, where you can only call at 5pm and weekdays for a 30 min window. if going without a reservation, then the wait can be up to 2 hours.

Service was wonderful, and I hate to say it, but food was just ok :/. Ive grown up on fish my whole life and was stoked when my friends chose a traditional omakase type spot. But as much as it feels sacrilegious to say, sugarfish is way better and half the price. The fish just wasn't excellent and the bill was $$$. Wish this place the best, but won't be back.

Tried the Omakase at this place, located in the plaza in Orange. The restaurant itself is very small and dark, a few tables with a bar with all these amazing sushi chef. I still don't know why most omakase places don't have more comfortable seating, especially for the price. The lighting was also extremely dark at the tables. We ordered one Omakase and my favorite black cod, uni pasta and steam clams to share. All the fish are so fresh and extremely delicious, even the Wasabi tastes very differently. The miso soup with shrimp heads are very delicious! We celebrated his birthday there, but the ambiance doesn't seem to cater to celebrations. I have to say calling to make reservations at this restaurant almost made me not want to go here. The phone line is only available in between 5-5:30, and most of time it will be busy tone. I had to call 4/5 times to make reservations for dinner. Overall food : 5🌟 Dining experience: 2 🌟 Booking experience:-2 🌟

Surprisingly good value for omakase to-go. Sushi itself was a bit disappointing, though. Generous cuts and reasonable quality for a random strip mall in Orange, but not enough to be worth the drive, especially if you're used to downtown Los Angeles' Japantown or, further west, Sawtelle.

Last night 7/4/2018 was my third time dine at Oshima. I was disappointed with the chef special sushi plates. Four of us agree that something we’re not right with last night sushi. They were not that tasty like the previous times. I think that it may be the massive production. We ordered 4 plates of chef specials and so another 2 tables. I wish the chef only made 5 pieces at a time so sushi stays fresher. The capachos were really good. And other snack dishes were so delicious. The service was so so One of the chef (the second oldest guy of the four) was rude. Well I hope because he does not speak English well. I will come back to dine at the bar. May be the sushi will be fresher then. Bom apetite!

I have been coming here for years, could always count on great food and service. They had an ownership change last year. The new owners are ruining this place and its reputation that the old owners took well over a decade to build. Gave me an attitude and made me feel totally unwelcomed. I feel sad for the wonderful chefs and waitresses I've known for many years. This place used to be packed with a line of people waiting outside. Last two times it wasn't even half full on Fridays. 5 stars for the chefs and waitresses and 0 for the new owners. Sayonara to the wonderful memories I had here.

Went in for lunch recently but been here many times previously with mostly good experiences. Noticed new ownership right away. Omakase still a good deal. All other items on menu are tiny portion and overly expensive. Average service and servers. When ordered cold green tea got plastic bottle tea from market, unacceptable at their price point. Tried few items and spent over $350 for lunch for two but overall lackluster service, quality and tiny portions with high $$$ was a disappointment.

UPDATE Great change in the recent months. Wow! What a change for the WORST! Where do I start Everything from the green tea, hand rolls were soggy!! so much soy sauce on sushi, chefs changed, waitresses changed, and I suspect the owner changed. I have been coming here for years… so sad. Everything changed and not for better. ——- Great Sushi however making reservations is difficult, service is slow, it takes a long time to get inside even when they open. A lot of room for efficiency improvement. But one of the best sushis for the price.

Food was ok but way too expensive. More than that the service was offensive. It was also for a birthday we ate here. Wouldn't come again due to service.

A

Don’t get omakase here. We reserved for five for a birthday meal. This is more sushi than omakase. The way they serve is they just bring out a plate with all ten pieces, instead of the chef making it one by one and explaining what they are. The experience is really lacking, we finished within fifteen minutes. The fish were fine but not impressive compared to other omakase places.

I used to really like this place. Now, it’s under new ownership. -The tables are now arranged to maximize the number of seats in the dining area. Every time a server passed behind me, she would bump the back of my chair because it’s so cramped in there. -There are tacky signs posted on the wall, encouraging patrons to finish their meal within 90 minutes. -The service is really fast and efficient, but the servers tend to hover when your meal is over to get you out quicker. I felt rushed and uncomfortable trying to calculate the gratuity with a server literally looking over my shoulder, waiting for me to input that info. -The prices aren’t that transparent. “MP” (Market Price) is kind of a cop-out if everything you want to order is MP. Someone said they paid $65 for a 10 piece omakase, but we paid $95 for a 12 piece omakase. Something smells fishy. -MOST IMPORTANTLY: the quality of the food, specifically the fish, has taken a huge nose-dive. Considering everything in its entirety, it’s just not worth it to dine here again.

⚠️ Double-check your bill! ⚠️ We came here for a special family dinner to celebrate my birthday, and unfortunately, it turned into a disappointing experience. We ordered the Omakase and an expensive bottle of sake. The quality of the sushi was underwhelming—rice was mushy like porridge, and the portion sizes were noticeably smaller compared to when the previous owner was in charge. But the worst part? We were charged $115 when our order clearly added up to $97. When we pointed it out, the owner didn’t apologize or explain—just quietly brought a corrected bill. It felt dishonest, like they were hoping we wouldn’t notice. It completely ruined the evening for us. Please check your receipts carefully, especially if you’re here on a date or a special occasion. You deserve better service and transparency.

J
Jack Yao

The omakase is only 12 or 13 pieces of sushi that come together, no separate courses, makes you really full after all the rice. And not even one course of sashimi, how can this be called omakase? it’s just sushi combo.

J
Jason S

Been coming here for years unfortunately the original owners left and the quality have gone way down. The flavoring was nothing like it was… about the same fish quality as a typical Korean sushi joint and nothing wrong w that except they charge 3x more than your other similar Korean sushi. Lunch was $150 per person with no alcohol.

E
E L

This place is terrible!!! Don’t do it! It’s like $100 pp for 12 piece omakase and they don’t have a price on the menu. Everything is market price. Fish was so fishy and chewing stringy. They have fake Yelp reviews and hide real ones. If you you dig in to real reviews you’ll see ppl complaining and the restaurant hiding them. They have new owners and the service and quality of food has gone down hill. I’ll forever tell everyone this place gross.

M
MT

How is that sushi comes out in three minutes? Are the rice pre made and the chef slaps the fish on the rice? Omakase should be a dining experience. I also noticed that after the new ownership, the omakase sushi rice is somewhat flat and round (cookie cutter) and wasabi on the plate. You cannot heat cup of noodle faster than they made the sushi. Two people including tax, $289. Im not sure if the sushi chef can give me a straight answer!

Worst experience ever. First of all, has a 5 month old baby girl (NOT ABLE TO SIT BY HERSELF) Brought a stroller, OF COURSE. While putting our name on wait list, no one told anything about bringing a baby with stroller in the restaurant. After waiting almost 2 hours (which is understandable since this restaurant is busy), a waiter said the stroller is not acceptable. Even we are sitting on a table for 4, we only had 3 adults. We just needed to move one chair out and put the stroller inside. However, the manager and waiter kept said it was not allowed. And they said there is even NO HIGH CHAIR in the restaurant. I can’t believe that there is any restaurant out there without high chair nor accepting a stroller. I did not want to go another restaurant since I already waited 2 Hours. I needed to carry 5 month old baby and had to eat. This is not a cheap restaurant. They should have better service. Or at least, let customer to bring a stroller if it is not blocking others.

G

Service wasn’t much there except sitting me down at a table and bringing over my food, I tipped about 10% and signed the receipt. As I walked to my car, the waitress came running out with her little kiosk and said I forgot to pay. Okay, maybe I forgot to sign but as I entered the 10% tip again and signed again, she asked me why? I knew she canceled the first transaction in order to get higher tip, she was trying to put me in an uncomfortable position on the street alone for me to tip higher. Begging is one thing, but to ask for more money on the street, which is basically panhandling, is another thing.

F

My family used to love coming to this restaurant but with the new ownership, they overbook the reservation. Expect to wait at least 30 more minutes from your reservation time. Service is quick but they rush you to finish your meal in 90minutes.

H
Hana Yoo

Its sad to see this once amazing restaurant become a mediocre omakase spot. I sat in the sushi bar, and the chef who was making our omakase had no regard to me being left hand dominant. Spinning the sushi pieces each time yet no clue to the customer being dissatisfied. Food was not as it was, too much salt. And why the soy sauce pour-over on a fresh negitoro handroll… ? need I say more. We’ve been here many times, and the last time we had a Japanese chef serve us.. very well.. but today he’s gone. To the new owner.. Please hire ur chefs back.. I am not sure if him or any of the Japanese chefs are coming back, but if anyone has sightings, please comment.

Used to come to Oshima quite a bit. This time around, the food quality has really gone down hill. We typically always order the ten-piece omakase and some sides. The omakase was certainly not worth the $70 this time around. Some pieces of the omakase were good; however, other pieces were really not great and not fresh at all such as the black cod. Overall, the quality of the fish is certainly lacking compared to before and we could tell that it was not as fresh as before. We will definitely not be coming back. My advice to management: it’s ok to raise the price of the omakase but do not sacrifice quality. I would come back if the price of omakase went up and the fish was actually fresh compared to before. We get it, inflation is a big deal but there are ways to combat it in other ways and your good customers would understand.
