Roosterfish, an iconic bar on the vibrant Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, has been a local staple since 1979. It's renowned for being one of the first gay bars in the area, contributing significantly to the community's history. Its revival after a brief closure has kept the legacy alive, blending its rich past with a polished, contemporary vibe. The house special old-fashioned is a unique spin on the classic cocktail and is a must-try for newcomers. Trust the bartenders' expertise here; their skillful recommendations are on point.
Lovely bartenders and ambiance!! Always pleased with the service, drinks, and fellow patrons when I stop in here for drinks!
A great place to hang out and have a good cocktail with friends or alone. The bartenders are friendly and it's never too crowded during happy hour. The drink menu changes seasonally, but make sure to try a Watermelon Fresca or Rocking Chair if available.
Had an excellent time at Roosterfish. The venue is great, but the service is amazing. Big shout out to Jordan, Matt, and Baron on the doors for a stellar evening. If you're ever in Venice be sure to visit!
Stopped by here for drinks after dinner and had a great time!
They have the best drinks, security, and bartenders! Bri is the best bartender, hands down, very attentive, good vibes, and shakes a good cocktail. They have a DJ who plays house music & top 40 Thurs-Sunday. Celebrated my birthday here recently and it did not disappoint. Make sure to check out the patio when you go. Although it’s not technically a gay bar anymore, there are some fun surprises in one of the bathrooms. Remember to look up ;) Thanks for the great memories, Roosterfish!
The vibe here is really cool and the drinks were good! $17 for a cocktail.
I love this place! Great drinks fun atmosphere friendly staff... wish I'd live in Venice I'd be there every night!
I’m from out of town. Matt was a phenomenal bartender. We had great conversation, and he made my experience at Roosterfish even better than the stories I was told about how great this bar is! Thank you guys for making an experience so memorable! Cannot wait to be back!
Bartender was crushing it solo. Great drink. Great service.
It’s a really chill spot during the week, starting Thursday night it starts to pop off because the music is really good. The drinks are usually relatively strong and the staff moves fast. Good for dates!
First time in this very boutique area in Venice, sunday vibes, it took a bit to warm up to the bar but I deeply did. The decor and music was on point. The drinks were delicious, Sonia was our bartender although she was busy, she was keeping an eye on us. Great bar, great joint great vibes.
This no longer is the Roosterfish that it use to be. It is no longer a gay dive bar and that era is certainly sorely missed. However the new owners have done an excellent job at bringing the place back to the current era. The bar is very cool, with great music and ambiance.
Great vibe, good music selection and not so loud so you can actually talk. Drinks are good and strong, outdoor patio nice. I went to roosterfish a few times when it was a gay bar before it closed down and reopened a few years later. This is not the same Roosterfish though there always seem to be a few gay people there and the crowd always seems chill.
LOVED IT!!! Stiff drinks at the right price. If your a guy you'll get great service. If your a lady you'll need MAN candy to get attention BUT when you do you get what you pay for! :) Love the people and the atmosphere. Weekends are the best, even Sunday!
This place is great. The cocktails are delicious and the service is super friendly and fast. I also left a brand new sweater there and the manager reached out to me to return it. Definitely will come back here again!
Renovated spot right on Abbott Kinney in Venice. Fantastic atmosphere to be in groups with your love ❤️ or by yourself. Nice crowd.
Spectacular cocktails at this hip joint on Abbott Kinney Blvd. Combine that with the extremely friendly bartenders, and you have the perfect combo.
Nice, friendly place for an afternoon drink if you are nearby on vacation.
VeryIt's the perfect spot to escape the crowds and unwind. The atmosphere is chill and inviting, making it ideal for a night out with friends. You'll definitely want to add this place to your list of must-visit spots.
While They Don’t Serve Food Here It Doesn’t Stop The Immaculate Service. The Staff Is Always Kind And Treat You With Respect!! Love This Place Good For A Friend Group On Weekends Or A Little Solo Date Night Or Enjoying The Company Of Another
Very suitable place for a cocktail in between the day, shopping, before or after meals. Drinks well presented and balanced. The list has something for every taste! We enjoyed sitting on the back patio, nice open space garden.
Great drinks and space to meet friends!
Maria the bartender is really good with her drinks. This is definitely the weekend turn up spot. Live music DJ and it gets crowded. Definitely recommend if you’re single looking for a fun night. Not somewhere to bring your date.
Very suitable place for a cocktail in between other stops, shopping, or before or after meals. Drinks were well presented, and the list has something for everyone. We enjoyed sitting on the back patio and happy to have missed the Saturday rush.
The theme here is very cool, drinks were solid and knew I wouldn't regret ordering a Manhattan and then an old fashioned. There's also an outdoor patio with seats and heaters. Decor was awesome. Beware there's only 2 single bathrooms for this place which is fairly large and gets crowded so definitely don't wait last minute to go. Nothing against the DJ last night but I wasn't feeling the music.
The atmosphere was pleasant and the bartenders were great. We went for a cocktail and were greeted as soon as we approached the bar. Thank goodness it was happy hour, as my draft beer was six dollars. Regular price was nine. I would have given a five star if the drink weren't so expensive. They have a great selection of cocktails with an artsy flair if you're into liquor.
First time here! My experience here has been amazing. Ignore the negitive reviews about the sassy bar tenders - it's just regular gay sass! The art is amazing and perfectly homoerotic! There is gay porn plastered on the ceiling of the men's restroom. Cheap drinks. Although I don't know if people know that this is a gay bar! All in all a great experience!!!
This place is alright, the patio is probably the best part, although they close it way too often. It just gets way too packed inside, and I'm usually not that into the music/DJs. One thing I love is "Abbot Kidding" which is a 1~2 hour comedy show that happens every Thursday on the patio at 8p ($20 tickets, look em up). It's walking distance to me, so this is my favorite repeating event in Venice. 90% of the comedians kill me, and the hosts are always some of the funniest ones! Anyway, I love the comedy show and wish that I could chill on the patio more esp with Covid and everything.
My experience here wasn't quite what I was expecting, but that's what I get for having expectations! A few friends said that knowing me I'd like it better than WeHo places, and they were right. I was a little sticker shocked at drink prices, although the daily special is a nice feature. The availability of indoor and outdoor seating/standing was great. I went late on a Sunday afternoon and the vibe was perfect. It has a low-key dive feel that I loved, and friend of mine and I were able to have good conversation. Go expecting quite graphic art that is somewhere between amazing and scandalous.
This is actually a great place...BUT, they definitely need more bartenders especially during happy hour. One would think right, I mean. 🤷🏻♂️ It's a little annoying having to wait 10-15 minutes for a drink at a bar. Acknowledge your customers around the bar while mixing drinks. Don't wait to be waived down by one. Customer service 101!
went here on a night out with friends! The drinks were really good and the vibe was great! The DJ was good too although people were shy to dance. Would definitely recommend! Only ding is I wish the bartenders were able to recommend drinks better.
Patio needs to stay open later, music/djs aren’t popping enough to close the patio at 10pm…
Great bar, great music, great drinks and great vibes. The happy hour is okay, but it is daily (even on weekends). QR code menus throughout. Gorgeous ginormous patio + plenty of bar, table and booth seats. It's a very all inclusive space #AllAreWelcome
NOT a gay bar in the slightest lmao Had one $20 drink, which was decent, and then left. Door guy who was nice told me it used to be a gay bar, now it’s for “everyone”. It looks and feels extremely hetero now. Vibe/atmosphere is fine I guess, depends on what you’re looking for. This and the brig next door are the only two bars in the area, so options are limited. The old fashioned I ordered was well-made, the bartender was nice, and I didn’t have to wait long to order or get my drink for 10pm on a Friday night. No food options available/sold.
I went on a lively, crowded, Saturday night. No tables or seating were left when I got there; but the music was good, women were dancing, I had a nice time. Personally, I didn't get harassed by staff as other did, nor did the bouncer treat us bad. The service was indeed lacking though, I had to go around to a particular bartender that paid attention to me, as oppose to the nearest one. Pricing is a little high, tbh on top of the fact the beer selection is also lacking.
It's so sad coming to this place remembering that it used to be a queer bar. There was not a trace of that spirit to be found when I went. I went in just after midnight on my birthday, just to grab a celebratory drink with my partner: The bouncer and bartender were so rude it felt as if they must have rehearsed thier attitudes to a company standard. There was a table full of seemingly straight White (exclusively so, in LA 👀) patrons singing negro spirituals loudly in jest. Another dude starts openly flirting with my boyfriend (like being touchy feely with him right next to me), which was honestly a bit of a relief until he asserted that he was straight... Ok. The vibes there are a mess. The drinks were good though, so if you just need a cocktail and you happen to be on that block, maybe it's worth stopping in. Otherwise, it was pretty dreadful imho.
I was here on Aug 8, 2018. I gave an extra star for the venue's nice interior. They had kind of a snooty crowd, but that's L.A. Bar service here is extremely slow, and my bartender didn't even know how to make a Bay Breeze. Drink I got was $14 for a glorified pineapple vodka made with a cheap brand of vodka ($14 for Pinnacle is unacceptable). It was a good sized drink, at least. Most disappointing factor was that the venue is supposed to be a "historic gay bar", but the vast majority of people here are straight. And maybe 80-90% white. There's little diversity and few gay people here and it was a Saturday night. Super frustrating honestly. And the straight people here don't even seem to know they're in a historic gay space. There were zero gay events on the calendar. Sad. I can't see myself ever coming back.
DJ for New Years was very boring
Great drinks, good ambiance. The moody indoor bar also has a DJ that shows up later in the evening. Decent sized outdoor patios in the back too. Only issue for me is the bartender increased her tip and changed my total after I already signed the receipt. Immaterial amount, but principle out the window... No biggie, just credit card fraud. Something to watch out for. Other than that, great spot.
New years DJ please i’m begging for more this isn’t you please play some bangers
The owner is a terrible person!!! He was extremely rude to me and my husband I will never forget this experience He was so aggressive and offensive These type of bars are the ones that wish you never left the house in the first place absolutely horrible
This place use to be the place to go. It was one of the best gay bars in town, but those times are way gone. Once the original owner died it was the end of an era. Sunday afternoon bbq was the best. Like all cool things gay, the straights have taken it over.
Extremely rude unprofessional employees, terrible drinks and the restrooms are all dirty.
I had a good friend of mine, who had gotten their id’s stolen, try to come into the bar with their literal birth certificate and because the bouncer was on a power trip, and didn’t even bother to look at it, they were denied entry. It didn’t stop there… the bouncer went so far to call the other bars in the vicinity to tell them to deny entry anyone showing their birth certificate. I remember when this place was a really good time but until they establish genuine beneficial business practices instead of relying on egocentric opinionated individuals, We wouldn’t recommend coming here.
Great location, but the bouncer was rude and made fun of my outfit at the door. Unprofessional and unwelcoming. Not coming back.
I regret stopping into this bar at 4pm on a Saturday. It wasn’t busy in the slightest but we walked up to the bar and probably waited 5 minutes, all while being completely ignored by one of the bartenders standing right in front of us having conversation with other customers. When we were finally acknowledged by the second bartender I ordered two Long Island iced teas. The bartender outwardly smirked and said “We don’t do Long Island iced teas.” So I asked for a rum punch instead. Instead of responding the bartender just took a placard with a QR code and threw it down it in front of me. Ok, weird, considering it’s a full bar and they can’t throw together some rum and fruit juices? So I ordered a drink from the menu. Then the bartender didn’t ask if we wanted to keep it open or closed, he just took my card and put my check down in front of me without any thank you or any word at all for that matter. The service, both in urgency and manners, is lacking to say the least. The only redeeming thing about this place is the backyard patio with lots of seating and tables. Our old fashioned was poorly made and my spritz was just alright. As a queer woman, and even just a paying customer for that matter, it disappoints me to be treated like this in what is supposed to be a safe space.
I was drugged by the bartender and then followed and mugged by three men I had seen sitting at a table inside. They took my phone, wallet, and cracked my skull open, even though I was too drugged to get up, leaving me for dead and destroying my career as a pilot. I now have a metal plate in my forehead. Not a good place. I am posting this to raise awareness for peoples’ safety.
Honestly don’t recommend. SO many better spots. Left at closing after having one drink here. Late? Yes. Drunk? Absolutely not. Went to bathroom at like 1:55 and the bar closed while in the bathroom (a single door gender neutral bathroom with a urinal so my friend and I went together to save time) Their male staff pounded on the door incessantly even though it had only been a couple minutes. Then three of their male staff screamed at and harassed me and my friends and threatened to “escalate” things while corralling us like cattle..when I only tried to have a logical conversation and ask why they felt the need to be so blatantly mean to people who had done nothing wrong. Apparently the only thing they hate more than women is their jobs
So many better bars in LA. Go hit Waterfront, or Erwin Rooftop, or Scopa. This place is fine if you want a dive bar that smells like old beer and has rude front door staff. If you’re out of town, there’s a 100 better options near by.
