Nothing fancy about the food is setting but just very well done. The burgers were terrific and the desert even better. Best of all, unlike other establishments in Colfax, they are welcoming of people of different color and persuasions than the local population
A friend and I stopped in while traveling. The place was busy for a 4:00 in the afternoon. The service was refreshing, friendly helpful and fast. excelled. Menu was huge. Tons of things to try. I loved my Mexican salad. So yummy. I added TRI to and it was a huge amount of meat. The avocado was perfectly ripe. My friend had the BLT and it was Huge and she said tasted great. We decided to try the bread pudding dessert and it was warm and so good, we added ice cream on top and well AMAZING! It was also large. The waitress was very attentive. We over tipped because all in all we were in and out of there in 45 minutes and back on the road. We both want to come back and bring our husbands.
In a place with functionally no competition they really don't HAVE to make good food. But they do! They really make fantastic food here! I may need to make a special road trip back up to get my hands on one of their sandwiches again. DEFINITELY worth stopping. It's also right next to a surprisingly good motel, so this is a fantastic place to stop for the night!
The food was great and came out quickly. I taste good. The sourdough toast was really tasty perfectly buttered. Seva was really happy with the pancake was shaped like a Mickey Mouse and yeah, he seems to like this place more than the other breakfast spots in town so keep up the great work!
Absolutely every dish exceeded our expectations! Fabulous place to eat. Cannot say enough about the staff. Everyone working together to make our short visit enjoyable.
I just wanted to say to all the servers thank you very much for splendid service it's nice to see your smiley faces even though I look like a grump but I'm not I'm just introverted had an excellent visit on Sunday 21st September 2025 considering it was pretty packed in the morning excellent service and a big fat thumbs up !
The Teriyaki Mushroom with Swiss Burger was so amazing. They made it perfectly and had awesome employees and customer service.
Cute roadside cafe with delicious food and friendly service. Located right off of I80 with plenty of parking (park on top in front of building not below next to motel). We ordered a pizza, French dip and steak sandwich. Steak sandwich was amazing. They cut the steak on site. Thick cut and tender. House made potato salad was amazing. Sauce on pizza was delish. Totally recommend this spot on your travels.
Food was Great, Service was EXCELLENT, servers had a positive attitude, great suggestions.
This is an old fashioned American roadhouse. You can order breakfast, lunch or dinner from their extensive menu. My friend had the eggs Benedict while I had the salmon spinach salad with mozzarella balls and artichokes, an expected menu item. I forgot to mention there were salads an berry pies.
The food, service, atmosphere was all above and beyond. I had the rib eye and garlic fries and it was amazing. We got there at 8:15, 45 minutes before closing and they were more than happy to seat us and feed us. Highly recommend this place. I know I'll do the 40 minute drive to go again!.
Love the vibe and the food! Wait staff was friendly and never stopped moving! We enjoyed the carnitas burrito (with a pancake for my bread option as a side!) Yummo. I haven't had a pancake in years!! Hubby had the traditional eggs bene and ate every bite! Thick ham on each side made it a huge meal. He still ate every bite including his hash browns while I took some leftovers home! Avacado on the burrito was fresh and plentiful. Carnitas was delish and hash browns cooked just right. People coming in non stop but great use of space meant no waiting for a table. Great find just off 80. Lovely breakfast on 4th of July. Thank you for being open!!
Holy moley, stop here for a delicious burger and fries 😋😋😋 Sweet potato and classic fries were perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside!!! Also, homemade onion bun 👌🏼
Huge selection, definitely can find something for everyone. Everything looked good it was hard to decide. Great stop right off the highway to grab a bite. Fair pricing and good service.
I really enjoyed this restaurant. The waitress that attended us was very accomadating and attentive to my groups needs. The plates were bigger than expected. I ordered the hamburger and it had to eat it in 2 days. I love that they asked how I liked my meat cooked.
Randomly decided we were hungry on a road trip. Great food. Great service. Reccomend the French Dip and Chicken Fried Streak. Yum!
My new favorite restaurant. I've enjoyed the thick flavorful chili, their outstanding pork chops and the tender, juicy prime rib! The service is above and beyond. The people there make you feel welcomed and appreciated. They are attentive, friendly and fast. The atmosphere is welcoming and homey. I'll be going back!
And then this little helper dude I brought with me tells me about TJ's Roadhouse, ..says they put out the best steak in the lower 48! So I slapped him, right upside the head! And it's the last time I take GiIroy anywhere. I had to drop off a Gnarled Whipstickler Crank to the Seminiferus Club of the Sierra for their annual long shot derby here in Auburn. It's the first time they're hosting the event, it's normally held in Palm Springs, and their head guy, Sprae Alldover tells me new records are expected because of the thinner air. Then he tells me that TJ's Roadhouse is a great place to get a steak, so off I went. And let me tell you....The food was Spectacular! 5 stars all day long. ☆☆☆☆☆
A great, authentic restaurant. I recommend it. The food is great, the waitress was super friendly and polite
Great stop on my way to Reno from San Francisco. Lots of good food to choose from and a few good craft beers on tap. The service was excellent! Will definitely be coming back!
Me&my boyfriend were looking for a good place to eat in Colfax this weekend. Went to a place called "RedFrog" had an ugly outcome and walked away from there. Then we decided to just eat at any place near by and get over with it. We came upon the TJ's Roadhouse. What a difference it made to us after the other encounter. We loved this place so much going to be regular customers now. This was the most welcoming and friendly place ever. Kim took care of us and we were very pleased with her. The food was so delicious. Kim was so happy to make my order fit to my specific needs. She did not even once make me uncomfortable when I was so specific. Loved the place and food, highly recommended it. 👌
The food is really good , the service IS AWESOME especially Leanna she was so prompt and helpful gave suggestions and her favorites.
First-time dining at TJ's Roadhouse up in Colfax CA. My son had heard they had the best burgers and that is the truth! I had the burger with an egg on it, bacon, avocado, and grilled onions with sweet potato fries. Awesome! My son had the basic burger and added mushrooms and bacon. Excellent and friendly service, Definitely will return. Kinda basic atmosphere because it's an old school bar and grill. The homemade onion bun in my photo was a little smashed because I had already taken a bite. 🤭😹💙
A quaint little restaurant in the town of Colfax, CA. Stopped for lunch on our way to Reno NV. Purched on a hill next to a motel, we almost missed the place. Staff was friendly and we were promptly seated and offered drinks. We ordered the hot pastrami on rye and the I 80 club sandwich. The pastrami was thinly sliced, kruat, sauce on a breoch bun. The club sandwich was stacked high with turkey and ham. Both sandwichs were served with fries and were very tasty!
Excellant place!! Easy parking, clean restrooms, good pricing and a great atmosphere. The burgers were fabulous with tasty beef and fresh ingrediants. The kid pancakes were "Mickey" shaped and yummy. The kid quesidilla was fresh and kept my kid quiet until it was gone!! Hiedi, our waitress, was the perfect combination of fun and smiles with great service. Defiantly go here if you are near Colfax!!! 😃❤
Great casual road house! Delicious food and generous portions with great service. Go-to Colfax location for me and my family.
Chill diner vibe. The food was diner style and quality. They have a lot of options on their menu, tons of seating. Two servers, packed restaurant but they were on top of everything and quick to bring things out.
Had breakfast with family. I had a delicious waffle. Everyone enjoyed their food very much. Server was wonderful. Such a nice atmosphere. We will be back.
Honestly one of the best breakfast places I've been to. The omelet was delicious and big. The was pancake was incredible, it's hard to find a place that makes pancakes right and these guys do. I wish they had more of a selection for syrup for the pancakes and the hashbrowns were a little oily but still good. Honestly, when I delivery to the area I'll be stopping by again.
Stopped at T J’s Roadhouse to grab a quick breakfast before getting back on the highway. T J’s is situated in a very convenient location right off of HWY 80. Was seated right away and was served a drink within a couple minutes of sitting down. Dining room and tables were clean. Food came out quickly. My omelette was hot and delicious. The servers were friendly and efficient. Great place to eat!!
We stopped here on a Sunday around noon, we're seated right away. Service was very quick, multiple waitresses checking on us throughout the meal. Food came out quickly and was fresh and delicious! Prices were very reasonable especially for the amount of food you get. Decor was very cool, lots of old signs . Highly recommend if you are in the area. It was a great find!
Great little diner with plenty of breakfast and lunch / brunch items to choose from. They have a bar with beer and wine, champagne and mimosas too. This place won't disappoint on your trip through to the mountains. Friendly and helpful wait staff. We had the Hammy and Sammy, Bread pudding and Breakfast Cristo Sandwich. Definitely recommend all.
We came to Emigrant Gap for the day and stopped here on our way home for some food and to warm up in the blizzard. I can’t stress how IMPRESSED we were with their customer service, time management and AMAZING FOOD! We will be making this our traditional spot for our visits up the mountain for sure! Highly recommended to families with children also!

Great Food! Chicken was nice and juicy, garlic fries had just the right amount of garlic flavor. The burger was almost too big to eat.

I am glad we tried this place. Warm, friendly service and good food. The place seems like a 19th century history lesson. Dining room and restroom showed signs of age. Prices were average.
Great good, only complaint last 3x we went there they had no orange juice which meant no mimosas 🥹
My burger was cooked perfectly!!! Once I finally got it. I think it took nearly 30 minutes for burger & fries. I only saw one table with a couple sitting. That is my only complaint, EXTREMELY slow service. And price... $70 for burger, fries, shake and an extra patty for my furbaby waiting in the car.
Fantastic! Wonderfully delicious, down to earth treat. They had me at bacon wrapped meatloaf, but really why stop there. Chicken chowder soup was awesome. Tilapia texture? -Perfect- just...wow. Sauce? Oh, my. I even happily ate my mixed vegetables. Plus, the sweet 'tater fries are thinly sliced & melt in yer mouth, crispy not crunchy. Hardwood chairs, so lengthy visits may get fidgety, & we were there a while; seemed a little short staffed or something but then we weren't in a hurry anyway. Date night. The bathrooms are cute. I gotta go back to try their stroganoff, bread pudding & a couple other things. Very good staff too, friendly & knowledgeable but not overbearing. Now, if they'll get a chocolate cake on the dessert menu...Absolutely delightful!
This place had friendly wait staff and very good food. I believe this Burger was called the Double Chin Burger. My son ordered this. He is a pretty large guy and still had a hard time holding this in his hands. It was very messy and scrumptious. He almost ate it all but couldn't take down the last couple of bites. He loved it. A couple could easily share this meal. He also had onion rings with it. a little pricey but worth it. oh and I had a nice side salad and a baked potato since I'm a vegetarian.
Im a truck driver that often runs out of drive hours. So when I do, on my Reno to Oakland and back, I always park my rig in Colfax and walk up to TJ's Roadhouse. Best servers in the Sierra, awesome food. As a truck driver, this place offers a warm smile and comfort for a solitude proffession .
Never been here so decided to stop in to a small town spot after a river adventure. I got the Clownifornia Burger and the wife the BLT. We both enjoyed our food, the bacon was good and fries were crispy. Loved the onion bun on my burger. Its a cool little place to stop into and would come back for the food, onion bun and local vibe to try more. 4.2 overall.
The crispy chicken and tropical salads were hearty and delicious. The dressing was on point as well (bleu cheese and ranch). My BILs double chin burger was so good!! Thick cut bacon, juicy burgers, great onion rings.....the tots were delish as well. My son liked his mini corn dogs and fries too. It took a while to have our order taken, get our food, and get the attention of our waitress but she was friendly and helpful. My diet burger was overcooked, burnt on the edges, the bun was burnt black, and the bacon was burnt black too. :( Please note it is the day before the 4th of July and there were several parties of 8 or more.
First time visiting quiant place food is good too. Right off Interstate #80 easy to find.
Enjoyed delicious burgers. Service was a bit slow when we were in on a Sunday evening.
I haven't been here for dinner, but I love the breakfast and lunch options. The benedicts are good. I also like the sandwiches, especially TJ's Meat Melt with turkey. There is a nice, relaxed atmosphere here, with friendly staff.
Never had poor service and atmosphere is cozy, relaxed, comfortable and family friendly. Iv never been disappointed with the quality or flavor of the food and its always cooked perfectly but I wish they would change up the menu from tine to time or add specials or new items. Been coming her for years and its stays they same would like something new once in a while.
Great food! I got the pulled pork sandwich and it was amazing. My buddy got a burger and he said it was great as well.

The ribeye was tough and horrible. Most expensive piece of meat and only ate half.
We usually stop here on the way to Reno or on the way back, for a few years since we started gambling in Reno, but we noticed the food quality has gone down, not sure why, cause we used to rave about this place. Service is super slow, but, waitresses are always polite and friendly. We stopped there on Friday on the way to Reno and also on the way back home on Sunday. It took them about 50 minutes to get our order and it was only 4 of us, specially when there was only a few people in there. Walked in at 10:30 ordered and not sure why it took a long time. We were about to leave when our order finally arrived. I think we well not be stopping there anymore.
Typical diner that seems to cater to the locals. Lots of burgers and meats on the menu. My partner enjoyed the tri-tip with fries. The fries were surprisingly good. I had the tri-tip Cobb salad. I was disappointed in the ingredients. They used iceberg lettuce and not romaine, no avocado, no tomatoes, no green onions, no bacon bits. The tri-tip was medium rare as I requested. It was not that appealing.
This restaurant was convenient, off/on the hwy. The service was great. They were out of tri-tip for the Cobb salad, no worries the chicken they substituted was seasoned and cooked correctly, tender and juicy. The burger was ordered medium, or on their menu "perfect." I always eat my side dish first to let the burger rest. The French fries were perfect. But when I cut the burger in half, it was just a little pinker than medium, but nothing worth sending back. Later that evening i had a stomach ache and a couple of trips to the bathroom, but was fine after that. I would go back to TJ's , but order my burger medium well next time.
The meat was not as season, so it made the burgers and sandwiches taste extremely blan. For the value and price they have on their menu, the taste was definitely not there and definitely not worth the money spent. It was our first time there and would probably be the last. Overall, it was way too pricey for mediocre food.
This place was alright. Close to the freeway I suppose would be the plus. Waitress was nice but environment was so so being literally right next to the freeway. Three burgers and two beers was $75 which IMO is definitely not a great value. Nonetheless the food was decent but nothing special. The initials are great but the place could use a remodel.
I have gotten to go here twice. Staff is very nice. Food is just ok. If I'm in Colfax, there aren't a ton of options, so I might eat her again, but only because of limited options.

2 star update: Drove up the hill for the amazing fried chicken, only to find that they were closed for some reason. The sign on the window says they're open until 8pm on Thursdays, but it was only 6:30pm. On our last visit, we received free drinks, and were only charged 50% for our entrees because the service was so slow (25 minutes before ordering, and over 45 minutes after that before our food came. Our trip prior to that was on a Tuesday evening, and it was our fault for not knowing they were closed on Tuesdays. We drive up from Meadow Vista to come here, so its not only a let-down, but a waste of time/gas when they're closed and we have to drive back down the him, only eat somewhere else. If we do decide to come back for dinner, I hope I remember to call them first to make sure the trip won't be a waste. Original 4 star review: Amusing local atmosphere. The food is good, the coffee is hot, and the service suits. Will continue to come here.
Took my son to lunch here, the server was wonderful, I'd give her 5 stars for her service. On the other hand though, I spent $68 on lunch and it wasn't good. Chicken Caesar salad comes with pre mixed iceberg mix which was soggy and gross, the chicken tasted old and dry. My son's burger wasn't cooked right, and the appetizers that are $10 each are the same as the frozen ones at the grocery store. I heard they have amazing burgers, overall a disappointment .
Table seating immediate. Service VERY very slow, be ready to wait 45min. Food is good but not worth the wait. Not enough kitchen staff to prepare the food. Bathroom is to be avoided. Servers trying to please but wait is just too long.
Slooooow wait for Crappy Expensive Food, it's as simple as that, period!.................................................
Good service, our waitress was really nice but terrible food. Tri-tip and pastrami sandwich was really salty, and pizza was soggy.

We had a horrible waitress. She was an Elvira wannabe. Never seen her in here before and I am a local. But I only go with my father on weekends. She definitely should not be working here. Very very rudde and her hair got into the food. !
I tried this place when I first moved up here 8 months ago. Says worlds famous best burgers. Or something along the lines. It wasn't that great. Cook doesn't know how to cook a burger. The coleslaw was God awful. Avoid that at all costs. I was craving steak. Decided to give the place another shot. It's been about 6 months. My girlfriend and I ordered the Ribeye. My 2 buddies ordered the tri tip plate. My friends were in town and wanted to treat them to a nice dinner before leaving. All 4 of our plates were cold. The chili was the only thing hot. Fries, onion rings, steaks, tri tip, all luke warm/cold. I think my vegetables were the only thing hot. I asked to warm my plate up. The waitress was super nice and good service. The cook through the whole plate in the microwave. Nothing better than a microwaved ribeye. Couldn't throw that back on the grill while warming up the rest? My girlfriends steak she ordered medium rare. The steak always barely cooked. Super rare. 2nd, and last time I eat there. Payed almost $200 and couldn't get a good hot dinner.
Food was old and disgusting. We ordered the beef french dip. The beef was clearly not fresh and burnt to a crisp. It had the most disgusting taste of old burnt meat. Against my better judgment, because I never send anything back to the kitchen for replacement, this time I did. I ordered a plain cheeseburger. That too was equally disgusting. The meat didn't taste fresh at all and was unbelievably greasy. The only thing that I was able to get down was a handful of French fries. We paid the bill and left a generous tip because the waitress was very attentive and it was clearly not her fault. I will never stop there again.
Really bummed out after todays food and probably won’t come back for a while. I love stopping here to grab a quick salad while at work. Today I ordered the same thing (chefs salad no mushrooms) that I always order. It was SOO gross. It was also missing so many ingredients. The turkey was rubbery and honestly tasted like skunk. The cucumbers tasted like they were in a container that the soap hadn’t been washed off correctly. There was 7 small pieces of bacon. No hard boiled egg and no shredded cheese, no peppers. The only good thing in this “salad” was the tomatoes. This is so unlike this restaurant. I also ordered jalapeño poppers which we totally good! But all together I paid $25 for food that was gross.
When we went in there were only 6 other customers, all of which were already eating. We placed our orders as 4 other customers came in. As those people started getting their orders, our waitress came and told us she forgot to hit send on our order and it would be a few more minutes. By the time we started eating people that came in after us were starting to leave. It seemed like they cater and socialize with regular customers, if you are not a regular, you are treated like an annoyance, even if they are not busy. We thought since they were right off the highway they might want business from travelers but apparently not. To top it off our meal was eatable but not good.
The service I experienced was the worst I have encountered in quite some time. I waited for more than 20 minutes to place my order, and by the time it was taken, they abruptly stopped serving breakfast. I ordered food and received my salads without any silverware. I waited over 10 minutes before I had to intervene and request them. Numerous employees were inquiring with other patrons if they required anything, but our table was overlooked. Ultimately, I waited over 45 minutes for my meal. I had to signal my waiter to receive the check. At no point were we asked if we needed anything. I will certainly not be returning here.
This was one of the worst burgers I’ve had in a long time. I ordered a double burger with extra cheese and it was nearly inedible. The meat had zero seasoning, there was an absurd amount of lettuce, and there were no condiments at all, making it dry and flavorless. The bun was too small for the burger, so the entire thing fell apart the moment I took a bite. Everything slid out, leaving a mess instead of an actual sandwich. Paying almost $40 for this is ridiculous. Colfax already has very limited food options, and choosing this place over McDonald’s or Taco Bell and wishing I had gone there instead says everything. I won’t be coming back.
Service and Ambience was fabulous, unfortunately for me I ordered the Fish & Chips and the fish was overcooked in old oil and I was so disappointed. Everyone else had a great meal including my husband but my meal made me quite ill later in the evening with the grease from the fish wreaking havoc in my stomach :( I really should have sent it back or asked to order something different but that's on me. $18 for fish that was less than palatable but I ate it anyways because I was just so hungry from the Nevada County Toy Run I really didn't want to wait any longer for a new or different order to be cooked.
