Recently my family and I traveled to Grass Valley for the holidays and absolutely loved your cafe. I especially enjoyed the Jamaican tofu and am hoping you could share with us the recipe. If not could you please just tell us the ingredients?
South Pine is such a wonderful little spot in the heart of Grass Valley. Our server, Anna, was great, as was the food. The green drink was bomb, and so were the ollaliberry pancakes and garden scramble. Their vegetarian options are great! Our server dealt with a table beside us that was awful to her from the beginning. Sending back toast because she didn’t want it, and arguing with her about a 1.50 charge for salsa that she asked for, throwing a fit because she expected it to be complimentary. Anna handled it as best as she could, but these ladies were incapable of being pleased. If you are going out to eat, please expect that everything you order will be a cost. Otherwise, eat at home. And be nice to your server, it’s a reflection of how you treat others, and these ladies need to take a hard look in the mirror of self-reflection. Support small business and be kind! Thank you for the yummy food. 🫶🏻
This is a cute breakfast spot. It can be busy on the weekends but worth the wait. You also may have to hunt a bit for a parking spot. Once you get inside you will be greeted by friendly staff and a homey vibe. A classic country kitchen with elevated flavor. All of the breakfast staples are on the menu with a little creativity. Won't disappoint, but go on the weekday if you are impatient.
food is amazing, great service, you people need to come here.

Truly Head Cook loves cooking Walked in with friend from bayarea I have known Jim Rego for over 50 years And he didn't disappoint with this one!!! Here’s what we had: •Lobster melt •Lobster eggs Benedict •Salad w Parmesan garlic dressing •Breakfast potatoes Everything is 10/10 flavorful My favorite was everything! Parking can be limited but you will always find some depending on how busy it is. Service 10/10 Place is clean Love this place and I’m coming back!!!
This is our FAVORITE breakfast spot. Service, food quality and menu are incredible. Some of our favorites are the chorizo breakfast tacos, lobster scramble, and always the amazing weekly specials! dont forget a green drink!
This is a very high quality breakfast experience. The food, atmosphere and service are amazing. No complaints, but if you’re looking for a cheap breakfast this is not the place
We have dined here now about 7 times ! Not from Area so we travel from Downieville… not once have we been disappointed.. everything is delicious! Pancakes - the specials ( few weeks back ) loco moco - my taste buds were incredibly happy ! Fresh juices - love the ginger lemonade.. the coffee is amazing! Seriously they have flavor dialed in - often busy be patient it’s worth it !!!!
Great little place. Food is excellent. They make their own sauces. They make fresh muffins. The blueberry muffin with lemon glaze is superb.
Excellent food. The Huevos Rancheros and Chorizo Benedict with Jalapeño Hollandaise sauce were amazing. My daughter enjoyed the Mouse pancakes with fruit. Unfortunately the espresso machine was down when we went but the food was still 5 star quality.
The lobster Benedict is always bomb! Make the home fries cheesy garlic and its chefs kiss!
Great place! Excellent food, service and a great atmosphere. Homemade ketchup, jam, full bar, highly recommend!!
A favorite local yum-yum destination! Great service and food 💯❤️
South Pine Cafe is my GOAT breakfast place. I currently live in Denver, and have lived in great cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston. Each of these cities have a great culinary scene, yet every time I come home to visit my parents, I look forward to Sunday breakfasts at this place. The food is delicious, consistent, and has its own character without being too exotic. I have yet to fine a breakfast place with the same level of quality as South Pine Cafe.
Excellent food and waitstaff. We got a portobello and a lobster sandwich and I can't get them out of my head. Lisa was our server and she was killing it not just for us but the tables around ours too! Everyone was very friendly, happy to be there. Tip them very well! They deserve it.
I came here for lunch around noon. I have never been here before, and they sat us in a booth in the corner by the kitchen and it was freezing. But they were so amazing and moved us immediately and then the food we had was phenomenal and the service was even better! There's a lot of team work going on here. You have like 3 servers! Carly and Lisa were our helpers today and they were great. . we ordered the lobster melt which I highly recommend. And we also got this homemade blood, orange and cream pancake. And that was also phenomenal. I am looking forward to coming back to this restaurant. Thank you for a great time.!!!
I try and grab brunch here whenever I pass through Grass Valley. The food options are all great and the portion sizes are generous. It's a great place to get brunch with friends or family while visiting. Highly recommend the many Mimosa flavors and fresh juice.
Yum! Mismosas in pint glasses with fresh squeezed juices! Lemonade with guava or strawberry puree..delicious! Food was good too! Shared Eggs Benedict [called something better] with spinach bacon and jalapeno hollandaise and a grilled Turkey on sourdough sandwich! Everything was delicious!
Excellent, large portion breakfast options. Wonderful service, EVERY time, for decades! Love the berry French Toast & fresh squeezed orange juice & muffins & egg dishes & coffee is strong & good!
This place has been a favorite of mine for years. Everything on the menu is great. The homemade lemonade with ginger is delicious and refreshing. The grilled brie sandwich is fabulous!
I had a wonderful Mother’s Day breakfast with my two sons this morning. The pine cafe has been on my list of restraints to try for a while. The food was delish. Service was friendly and welcoming. Small town atmosphere was great too. And every mother was given a long stem rose . Between my sons and The Cafe I felt so full of love. I now have a favorite breakfast spot in Grass Valley .
Amazing food, it was busy so wait time for food was a little long but it was definitely worth the wait! The food was incredible and tasted great. Staff is sweet and we will definitely be back! New small town fave!
Fresh, healthy, well-prepared meals, kudos to the chefs. Great vibes: the atmosphere's warm and inviting, likely you'll see local friends and neighbors! Staff is friendly, kind, and working hard to keep everyone topped off with beverage refills, sparkling clean tables, and food brought to the table hot. Thank you South Pine Cafe peeps 🤗
Great, little artsy gem of a restaurant in downtown GV! I had the Veggie BLT with Avocado, a fresh house side salad, and fresh squeezed lemonade with ginger. Prices are a bit high, but the healthy food is worth it! What a fantastic Vegan lunch! No food pics...I Inhaled it all! Super friendly service, walked in with immediate seating after trying to find parking which was a bit of a challenge, but eventually found a spot on the street.
Always delish! Creative and satisfying meals. Great coffee.
When I went you could buy their jam in a cold jar!!! Soooo good!
Had a Father,s Day brunch here . We sat up at the bar - just the 2 of us - and had the most delicious food . The 2 bar staff were amazing and super friendly too . They worked together well . Nice clean cafe with a great vibe . So glad we chose this place to celebrate Father’s Day . I would give this cafe 10/10
Wow! Just moved to the area and decided to give South Pine a try. It was fantastic. We had one of the specials of the week: Pumpkin pie battered stuffed French toast as well as a Blackstone benedict. Let me tell you, this jalapeno hollandaise..... 🤌 chefs kiss. Well done. I loved every bite although the potatoes could be a little crisper, that's just my preference. Service was excellent too. We arrived at 9 and were seated immediately and when we left at 9:45 there were a lot of people waiting. I'd say before 10am is the best time to go, as another person suggested. I'll definitely be back!
I loved this place! My sister took me here on a recent visit and I was pleasantly surprised and charmed by everything. The waitstaff was so friendly and accommodating. And the food here is fantastic! It's one of the best breakfast places I've ever been to: really fresh ingredients and the potato pancakes are the bomb.
Really aesthetic on the inside and love the food. Very helpful employees. I come here whenever I can, if you haven’t been here yet you have to go
Terrific spot. We were warmly greeted when we came in, and the service was quick and friendly. The employees were glad to talk to us a little bit about the local area since we were visiting. My wife and I shared the Mexican scramble. It was excellent, and enough food for us to share. We also had hard kombuchas that were brewed locally. Highly recommend.
Was looking for something epic and tasty…. Boy was it amazing. We ordered some Bennie’s, some biscuits n gravy and a breakfast burrito, some from our group even got the Asian pear mimosa. Wow the jalapeño holindane was epic and the side spice of home made habanero was AMAZING. this place beats all other breaky spots and will be coming back
As a treat, my husband and I hit up SPC every other month or so for brunch. We get there early-ish and sit at the bar. My usual is either the lobster or mushroom Benedict with a side of fruit (worth the upcharge IMO) and the "green drink" while my hubby prefers the chorizo Benedict and a red beer. The music is usually good, as is the service. The menu offers a wide variety of entrees made with fresh ingredients. I have to avoid gluten and wish they had a bread substitute available so I could have their Olallieberry French toast (I avoid the Benedict's English muffin). The employees appear to be happy here, which is refreshing. Fun mimosa flavors, a coffee bar, and fresh-squeezed juice options available. It was $70 for the both of us (including tip), but like I said - it's a treat and we want to support this awesome business! ☕ 🍳
If you're there on a weekend, prepare for a wait but wow, the food was good and the service was amazing. They brought all our food out together and it was warm and delicious.
During our winter family trip, we stopped by South Pine Cafe in Grass Valley, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of the whole getaway! Stepping inside from the chilly weather felt like entering a cozy haven—warm, inviting atmosphere with that perfect small-town charm that instantly puts everyone at ease. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, even during a busy rush, making our whole family feel welcomed and well taken care of. The food? Absolutely outstanding! Their breakfast menu is creative and delicious, with fresh, high-quality ingredients shining through in every dish. We loved the hearty classics done right—perfectly cooked eggs, flavorful sides, and those standout specialties that go beyond the usual (think generous portions and spot-on seasoning). Even the picky eaters in our group cleaned their plates and immediately started planning our next visit! In the middle of a cold winter day, finding a spot with such comforting vibes, exceptional service, and truly tasty, feel-good food was pure magic. If you're in Grass Valley looking for a warm, satisfying breakfast or brunch, South Pine Cafe is an absolute must—highly, highly recommended! 5 enthusiastic stars!!!
We came here on our way to Nevada City. The food was very good. I got the lobster eggs benedict, my kids got the pancakes and waffles, and my husband got an All-American type breakfast. The orange juice tasted fresh squeezed and the lattes were very tasty. The potatoes that come with the breakfasts weren't that fantastic... It was like they were boiled and there was a half-hearted attempt to grill them possibly. However everything else was great. They even have homemade ketchup. Not sure if they do reservations, but we waited quite some time on a Saturday morning to get in, but we weren't in a hurry so it was fine.
Visited with my friends November 21st. It is located in downtown Grass Valley. This place is Always busy! I had to see the dentist in a bit so just had an egg and toast. It was good! Waitresses are hustling! My friends stayed longer as I had to get to my appointment and they were being entertained by their two kids! It's a very popular spot with a funky but cool atmosphere. Everyone seemed happy and enjoying their food! Note: they get really busy and you need to sign in when you get there. Bring your patience when waiting for your food! They have bar seating as well. I know they have beer and wine but don't know if they have a full bar.
The food here is absolutely delicious and the staff are so welcoming and friendly. We found ourselves loving the sense of community that comes from having such great energy from each and everyone working here. My wife and I even came here immediately after our wedding ceremony! We'd love coming here even if the food wasn't as incredible as it is, luckily, there's no concessions made when you can have your great vibes and eat them too.
Wow! I moved to the Grass Valley/Nevada City area about a year ago and I just found this place. Really sad I didn't find it sooner! Had a friend from socal visiting and looked up the breakfast spots in my area. Really enjoyed the atmosphere including all the hand drawn art on the walls. The food was great! Pancakes were really fluffy and bhttery, great berry sauce on top. The eggs Benedict was fantastic. The hollandaise has jalapeño in it, great kick! I also really enjoyed my hot vanilla latte was super creamy and really nice. Can't wait to come back and bring more friends
We visited with a group of friends and had such a great time. The restaurant had a great variety of options - mostly American and some Mexican, Asian, and vegetarian options. They offer fresh juices, coffee options, and other drinks as well. There was beautiful artwork on the walls for sale, a great mix of 80's music playing in the background, and attentive staff.
Always AMAZING and busy. Be patient. It is worth the wait! Highly recommend the Lobster Benedict, Lobster Scramble and the Strawberry Banana Nutella Pancakes. Everything on the menu is delicious. Something for everyone and all dietary needs. Staff is very friendly and service is impeccable. They have wonderful coffee drinks and mimosas. Also serve beer and wine. Try the Chico Chai and the Grapefruit Mimosa. Yum!
It's a small place with with a large taste! This was the place for us and our Vegan friend to all find something we would love! We had the Lobster Benny, Lobster Scramble, The Portabello Tofu Scramble and the Chile Rell the reno Special. All made to perfection. I had the Jalapeno Hollandaise sauce on the side...it's so good. BlackBerry/Mango Jam and the Habanero sauce are a must. It's a bit loud Inside and we waited about 30+ mins, but well worth it!
Went to breakfast on a Saturday late morning, which seems to be a very busy time (waited about 30 minutes for party of 3). Ordering was quick but delivery was slow probably due to the crowd. Food was good; had two eggs, potatoes, bacon and toast.
If you head here looking for great food, you won't be disappointed! While the breakfasts are a little pricier than some other places you might find, the food quality is worth it, and the service is great. Unfortunately, I have to cut a star. Sitting near the kitchen all morning, it was not uncommon to hear the odd curse word come from the kitchen staff. I'm used to language of that sort, but PLEASE know that you can easily be heard by your patrons! A family sitting in our place would not have been pleased.
Visited on a Saturday shortly after we moved to the area and we weren't disappointed! The wait was reasonable for the time of day and how tasty the food is. My husband tried the Lobster Benedict with home fries and I had the Ollaliberry Pancakes. The only thing I wouldn't recommend was the mixed berry mimosa which was not a great texture. Definitely a staple for a great brunch though, and we look forward to going back!
Short version: Amazing food. Steep price. Minor issues. But amazing food, so totally worth stopping. Longer version: I've heard a lot of good things about this place and I finally had a breakfast time open to check them out. I had the special of the week: Caramel Apple Pancakes. Let me start here: These were some of the best pancakes I have ever eaten. Fresh Gala apple slices were arranged inside pancakes that were light, fluffy, and cinnamon-spiced. The caramel was (fortunately) a drizzle over the top, because these pancakes were a perfect sweetness. SO GOOD! And huge. I'm a fat man who enjoys my meals, but I wasn't sure I'd be able to eat more than half of the three large breakfast cakes. But they were so good, I had to. I can't say enough good about these. But there was a weird flaw. Spray can whip cream. I recognize that it's easier, but its limp, quickly-melting to a milk drool nature totally failed the pancakes. Spray cream isn't bad - it didn't ruin the dish - but making a proper whipped cream at the beginning of the breakfast rush takes just a couple of minutes and would match the masterpiece of the pancakes. Why shortcut and sell your otherwise perfect platter short? So many places do this: make an excellent special, then throw on some kind of prepackaged, unimpressive afterthought. It's like framing the Mona Lisa with a refrigerator magnet frame from a dollar store. Service was acceptable, but not enthusiastic. I noticed that all of us who ordered water instead of other drinks got child-sized cups with lukewarm water and no ice. I got a refill once, but not again and the other tables around me didn't even get that. So that was a fail, but did I mention how good the pancakes were? I don't regret stopping and I will most likely try them again, but the little things matter, so I can only give four stars.
Food was good and service was excellent. The cook was a grump and turns out he’s the owner. He was unhappy with my Yelp review and was sarcastic in his response. The owner needs to grow up.
Packed. Long wait. Staff were friendly and accommodating. My dish was a little disappointing as my toast was burnt....it was sourdough bread with avocado and tomato and eggs. Couldn't cut through toast. But the rest was good. Great fresh squeezed grapefruit juice but price was $7.95 a glass 🤯
Food is good not great. We had the breakfast burrito and southwest turkey melt. The meat was of good quality but seemed to be oddly seasoned tasted like cinnamon? The home fries are just not my preference I prefer a crispier potato. Service is friendly not attentive we only got one water refill. The house made garlic feta salad dressing has fantastic flavor.
I came here on the day after Thanksgiving with my family. I ordered a mocha and a half order of ollaliberry French toast, expecting a semisweet berry sauce on a moist and supple toast. Instead, the French toast was lukewarm, dry, and flavorless, more akin to cardboard rather than bread, and the berry sauce was so bitter I could barely eat it. I managed to eat one of the four slices, washing away the bitter flavor with sips of coffee, before my mom told me I should ask for something else if I couldn’t finish it. The server was apologetic and incredibly kind, and even though it was almost closing time and the kitchen was shutting down, she let me order something else. I didn’t have much of an appetite left after the French toast experience, so I asked for a cup of soup. I was soon served a cup of delicious tomato & red pepper soup. It was creamy, warm, and flavorful, with just the right amount of red pepper kick. When we received the bill, I saw that they kindly had not charged us for the French toast. TL;DR: good restaurant, except for the French toast.
The building is real easy to locate and it's a pretty building. The lobby is a decent size with a little waiting area. The restaurant is bright and unfortunately very loud because the front door slams shut every time someone goes through. Our server was Pfeffie and she was quite pleasant to chat with and was singing and a little dancing to the music that was playing. The food was a little hit and miss. We both had one of the specials of the day, I had the Roast Beef and Gorgonzola sandwich which was great but I got a side of "Clam Chowder" that was clearly Manhattan style and I never tasted or felt a clam, just the bacon that was in there. It tasted fine, but not clam chowdery enough if I could only taste the bacon. My wife got the Tutti Fruity Pancakes, which she loved. We also got a side of home fries with cheese and they were alright but mostly bland.
New owners had removed the meals that we liked, so we opted to try something else my wife's lunch was fine, mine not so good. I had the Carne asada burrito. The meat the little that existed was close to being spoiled. The other vegetable, beans inside were ok. It was Valentines day, everyone was busy. So I didn't send it back. The thing is, even if the food was good, it truly wasn't worth the price. Bummer, it used to be a great restaurant.
Nice people, pleasant atmosphere and service. Food was average for the price. I had a grilled turkey sandwich. The bread was good (they must make it in house) but the sandwich itself was a just okay. Not huge on flavor. My sister had the avocado toast and it looked good.
My rating is based on the lack of communication by staff and the lengthy wait time. We arrived a couple minutes past 12:30. There were several signs asking that we write our name on the wait list as there was no one to check us in. There were 3 parties ahead of us. 2 parties with 2 people and 1 with 3 people. After waiting 15 minutes we noticed the tables we could see were waiting on food. I was unable to find anyone to inquire about the wait time. After a 25 minute wait the parties ahead of us began to be seated. We were seated at 1:10. We were immediately given menus and water. Our order was taken at 1:20 and we received our food at 2:00. Since we were seated by the kitchen we could see 4 people cooking in the kitchen but the food was exceptionally slow coming out. The food itself was very good. But if you are in a hurry I would not recommend South Pine Cafe. Had we known how the long we were going to have to wait, we would have gone elsewhere. But again there was no one to ask.
A friend recommended South Pine Cafe and I really wanted to like this place. The "wait" to be seated was about 15 minutes (not bad), but once we ordered - our food took another 50 minutes (way too long for me). The wait staff was not very friendly, as we had to ask about our food after 40 minutes. I ordered huevos rancheros, it was okay. I would say the breakfast was average.
Came here based on the ratings. Very popular place apparently. It would have been a real long wait if I wasn't solo and could sit at the bar. Ok, so the service was great and the food pretty good. So why only 3 stars? The price! Pretty expensive, $30 (before the tip) for a breakfast burrito, a pancake and a glass of OJ. Really!? And I didn't opt for the real maple syrup, which would have added another 3 bucks. Sorry, it wasn't that good. I do have to say that the OJ was really good tho. I should add that this place caters to healthy options, so keep that in mind if you come here.
Very long wait, both for a table and through the entire meal. The food was good, nothing special and with the long delay just above cold served. Meat undercooked but edible. It's very noisy but that's probably just the old architecture. Upside: staff very friendly.
The food here is genuinely good—some of the best I've had locally, with generous portions and fair prices that make it a great value for everyday dining. The servers are friendly and attentive too. However, the experience here was ruined by the new manager. The restaurant offers Wi-Fi with signs posted but has not worked for over six months. When I politely raised this issue as a fairly regular customer, suggesting they either fix it or remove the sign to avoid misleading people, the manager became defensive, repeated 'we're not an internet cafe,' and refused to consider being transparent about why the Internet never seems to work. The conversation escalated unnecessarily, ending with me being asked to leave. It's disappointing because the core offerings of food and value are strong, but deceptive amenities and poor complaint handling fail the basic honesty test. Transparency with customers would go a long way.
The food is great, the atmosphere is quaint. We were not happy, however, to observe the hostess taking a bribe from some yahoo who tucked some money into his palm. On a busy Saturday morning we saw this guy walk in with a woman, quietly brag to the woman about the money in his palm, (they didn’t put a name on the waiting list), and then he showed the money to the hostess. They had a ridiculous exchange about how she “forgot” to call him and then he was seated- ahead of at least ten other groups of people who had been waiting. We left in anger after that.
They have a sign in sheet at the counter and I’ve done my due diligence in signing in. They skipped me twice, even though they looked at me sitting down to wait. Both times, they sat two causation males without checking the sign in sheet. The first time, maybe the made a mistake, but the second time, that was no mistake. It was deliberate. I don’t recommend.
I never leave reviews for anything however the food was so bad here I had to write this. Me and 2 freinds came in and waited 45 min to be sat which wasn't to bad considering it was the day after holoween after we got our table we had to wait an additional 45 min to get our food. The waitress was nice and served us well however the food was way over priced and very bland the house fries look like someone threw a potato at the wall and microwaved it. the breakfast burrito was not good at all my sandwich had no flavor and was super greasy. my freinds burger had a massive pile of cold and slimy onions on it making it incredibly hard to eat and not to mention the French toast was soggy in some parts and stale on others. also 8 dollars for juice is outrageous and we are all currently having some bad stomach issues from the food. Also they don't believe in AC apparently because it was crazy warm in the building.
