This restaurant is a treasure. Our server, Mary Beth, was very helpful and engaging. We'll ask for her next time we go. The carnitas were excellent...and delivered to the table in a smoke filled cloche. It was a dramatic touch. The chips and salsa are so good, it's hard to resist eating too many before the food arrives. We also loved the skinny margarita. It had just the right amount of sweet and tart. We'll be regular customers for the month that we are here.
We loved it! Food and Service was excellent. There were 5 of us, plus we had our Schnoodle with us, so we sat on the outdoor patio. It was delightful! We'll be back next time we're "home", visiting California.
We visited this restaurant twice in the last few months. Across the board high marks both times. The food was delicious- chimichanga, cilantro rice, beans, etc. melts in the mouth. Fantastic combination of flavors. Had the skinny margarita to cut down on the sweetness of a regular one- great tasting. Our server Mary Beth was very upbeat and cheerful. She checked in on us frequently to make sure we had everything we wanted, and to ensure our experience was the best it could be. Thanks Mary Beth! Price was very reasonable. Parking easy. Music was appropriate and not too loud or soft. Premises clean and well lit. Highly recommend and we will be back again and again. It's rare to find a restaurant that hits top notch on all points but this is it!
Love chips and dip! The doggie menu is off the chart! You must try a craft of the house margaritas 👍
I spent the weekend in Oceano, came down from the Bay area. Easily one of the best mexican food I have had in California. The margaritas were on another level altogether! Our group of 10 ended up ordering almost all variants of the margaritas they had to offer and we liked them all. The flann was delicious too! Definitely definitely recommend.
I would for sure eat here again if I were in the area. Great food & great service. The restaurant was super cute and the bar was beautiful. The parking was ample even though it looked very small. Would recommend.
Date night every Friday. My favorite dish ever created is the Molcajete. Mixed drinks are great. All the food and staff are amazing.
Normally, our waitress is the best. This time, we had a different guy, and He never came to check on us. We were early, as soon as they opened on a Tuesday. The food is the best and the location is easy to find. We love the atmosphere as we can always relax and enjoy our food and drinks. Unfortunately, the table they sat next to us began talking loudly about politics and began to be a distraction to everyone in earshot. They even had to get up and look for the waiter as he was making drinks for someone who came in after us, and the table next to us, and never came to take their order. He was overworked to the point he did not notice how offensive the group next to us was, or he did not have time to do anything about it. Next time if we get him, we will get our food to go. Normally, this is our go-to spot for going out to eat. They open early enough for lunch and have good parking. Izzy is wonderful, and so is the long-haired waitress. Stay for dessert and enjoy the comfort of homemade food.
We had a group of twelve and our waitress wa outstanding. She took our drink order, came back and took our dinner order, brought back our drinks and shortly after our meals were served. Everyone was happy with their order!
The service was excellent. The young lady that attended us was all smiles and charming. The food was very good. The salsas, red and green, were both delicious and the tortilla chips were light and crispy. My wife got the taco and enchilada combination plate and I got the flour tortilla fish taco. My Cadillac margarita was adequate so maybe I should have upgraded the house tequila. Overall, we loved this place and when in town, would come back again.
The beef enchiladas were fantastic, the tamales were okay. Our server was super sweet. The atmosphere was amazing. Very beautiful.
Absolutely love Old Juan's Cantina! It just doesn't get any better than this! Great food, atmosphere and service. There is not a bad thing on the menu. Their margaritas are out of this world and they have so many different ones to choose from! Everyone is always so friendly here and I've never had a bad experience.
Wow ! Food & margaritas were excellent, even better than I remember- we highly recommend- you’ll love it.
Great place to go. The staff works hard at giving great service. Good food and atmosphere. The parking lot is always full
Excellent option for a delicious meal just a short walk from the airport in Oceana. We flew in not expecting to find much considering how little the airport is, so finding this restaurant and the lovely park nearby was quite the treat. The tortilla soup was surprisingly good, and the fish and chips were some of the best I’ve had. It was so good that I’m kinda bummed I didn’t get any pictures. It was a great dinner.
Food and service was fantastic. Been there 20+ times. Will go every time I'm in town.
Legit Mex good food and drinks in Oceano. Walking distance from the dune entrance. Very authentic decor, great selection of appetizers entrees and drinks. Chips and salsa were plentiful and delicious. Classic marg was refreshing. Staff was very cool. I would eat there on a regular basis. Bottomless mimosas with brunch wut?
This spot has quickly become my favorite Mexican restaurant on the Central Coast! 🌮 It’s perfect for any occasion a casual date night, dinner with friends, or even hosting a large party in their private room. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and there’s always plenty of parking, which makes it so convenient. The food is consistently delicious and full of flavor. One tip: if you’re a fajita fan like me, ask them to skip the sauce they usually put on top without it, the fajitas are absolutely perfect without sauce. Overall, it’s a place I keep coming back to. Great food, great vibe, and great for groups or a cozy night out.
Delicious food and an amazing resturant. I love that it looks like you can look up at the stars in the resturant. And the margarita is killer (in a good way of course!)
Outdoor dining area is not only beautiful it was created with plenty of space between tables for safety guidelines. Our server today was amazing. Very attentive and professional. Food... GREAT! My family has loved this place for over 20 years and literally only had imperfection a couple times. The vast majority of our experiences have been perfection no matter what time of day we've gone.
We had a party of 18 and they handled us well, including attentive service and excellent service. Recommend the enchiladas mole!
First time going there and I love it! Service was impeccable, they kept bringing us more chips as appetizer and the salsa was so good. 1L of marguerita fits 4 small glasses so you might want to take more than 1. Serving are generous and food is very tasty. You might not need a dessert after eating everything. Love this place!
Saturday night extremely busy but the food was excellent, the service was phenomenal and the atmosphere buoyant and fun.
The service here was incredible and the staff were very accommodating to my table of 10 people. Aside from the excellent service, the food here also blew my mind. I ordered the enchilada, sope, and taquito combo which also came with a side of rice and refried beans. Everything single thing I ate was packing with flavor and complemented each other very well. They did not skimp out on the amount of meat they give you and the cheese and sauce that came along with the items I could did not feel overpowering at all. Usually I don't like rice and beans at restaurants because they're underseasoned, but here, I couldn't get enough! If I lived in the area, this would've definitely been my go-to spot
We braved a most beautiful drive to the Coast after the third Atmospheric River to spend my Surprise Birthday weekend 🌧🎊☔️🌊 in Oceano, and arrived hungry. A quick stop to see the ocean, but beaches were closed already in preparation for the next storm. Can't wait to go to the beach tomorrow. We passed this restaurant on the way to check in and decided to grab dinner here after unloading the car. Great fresh Guacamole with fixins' on the side. Excellent Carnitas Wet Burrito. And the Chicken Tortilla Soup was pretty good too. All the times we've been to Grover Beach, Oceano Dunes and Pismo Beach, we didn't realize what Mexican food we were missing out on. Sorry, Splash, we found another favorite. 🤗😘 Can't wait to try other foods on the Menu.
Old Juan's Cantina is a fun and lively place to grab some delicious drinks and enjoy some traditional Mexican dishes. Atmosphere is lively and a mixture of locals and folks off-roading nearby at the Oceano Dunes OHV area. Definitely recommend Old Juan's Cantina and also a neat touch they bring out dishes on old skool carts to add to the experience.
Just a different experience ! I was amazed at the service and the food. Will go back here for sure! I enjoyed my meal and my party loved the atmosphere especially the design of this place if you look around there's a lot of attention to detail. For example, the rooster and chicken 🐔 in the cage makes it feel like you're in Mexico, even the restroom sink made of brick or something just made it seem legit. The food was seasoned and cooked well I can see why this place is busy! Great job and I hope the owner really appreciates their workers and compensates them well ❤️
Old Juan's Cantina has an awesome ambience, as a matter of fact they just remodeled! Their food is excellent with a wide variety of beers on top. I had their chicken mole and I will definitely be having that dish again soon. The service was awesome, the server checked on us multiple times kept my water glass full and you could sincerely tell that she wanted us to be comfortable and happy. The bathrooms were clean and easy to use. This is a great place for a date The bacon-wrapped jalapenos are a must! Update: 8/14/2023 Caramelized Avocados are still amazing. You gotta try the shrimp and crab flautas.
I made an online reservation for a party of 10. The reservation process was simple and very convenient. We arrived on time, and they already had everything set for us. The server was very friendly, and she provided us with great service. The ambiance is amazing; I loved the decor, the layout, and the music. The food was delicious! We had three entrées; the bacon wrapped jalapeños, the breaded shrimp, and the guacamole. We had the Poblano Adobo, Mole Enchiladas, Spinach Enchiladas, Burritos, and for dessert, we had the Sundae Nachos. I totally recommend this place. We're definitely coming back.
Visiting Pismo, we stopped into this Mexican restaurant which was nearby. I have to say it was very good. Excellent salsa and chips. I enjoyed my chicken tortilla soup and husband loved his meal of two shredded beef enchiladas. The place had a great vibe! Dang…forgot the leftovers sitting on the table!
After a fun day of dune four-wheeling we were hungry. I was expecting standard blah Americanized Mexican food but alas this run down looking place has quite the menu and food! From the innovative salsa ( actually had green) to my pork dish everything was too notch! My son and his friend loved the HUGE burritos too. Would recommend.
The service was excellent! The wait staff was very friendly, brought more chips & salsa, and filled our waters up. She even offered a harbano salsa but the regular salsa was hot enough for us! Great food & server nice & hot, plated with care! Loved it! We will be back!! The drive thru is very safe & smart way to get this delicious food!
5 stars!! Wow, Old Juan's delivered big time! The molcajete was insane, sizzling hot stone bowl packed with grilled steak, shrimp, bacon-wrapped bites, chorizo, sausages, grilled zucchini ribbons, avocado, queso fresco, and that rich, smoky red sauce that coated everything perfectly. Presentation was next-level with the charred 🌵 and steam. But the real standout was my wife's chicken mole—tender chicken swimming in deep, complex sauce (chiles, chocolate, spices all balanced just right). It was 🔥🔥🔥—one of the best moles we've had. Portions are generous, flavors authentic, and the cozy cantina vibe (cacti walls, chill atmosphere) right near the beach makes it even better. Friendly service too. Must-try spot in Oceano—can't wait to go back! 🌶️🍗🍤
Old Juan's Cantina is one of those restaurants our family keeps coming back to and it never disappoints. The food is consistently good — solid, flavorful Mexican cuisine that hits the spot every time. But let's be honest, the margaritas alone are worth the trip. Some of the best on the Central Coast. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, which matters a lot when you're dining out with three kids. It never feels chaotic or unwelcoming — just good vibes, good food, and a staff that makes you feel at home. If you're looking for a reliable Mexican restaurant in San Luis Obispo that works for the whole family, Old Juan's Cantina deserves a spot at the top of your list.
We came in on a busy Friday night and were super impressed with the staff! Hostess got us seated as quick as they could, waiter was also a bartender and he quickly got us drinks and food. Food was perfect and everyone was happy.
Best Mexican Restaurant I've been to in many years! Authentic Mexican food with a very large selection of tasty food! They also have some delicous vegan and vegetarian food. I had the Calabaza Tacos which are vegan friendly "(Three mini corn tortilla tacos filled with butternut squash, and corn drizzled with a coconut enchilada sauce, vegan friendly Mole sauce and vegan feta crumble. Garnished with cilantro") which were absolutely fantastic! Can't say enough about how tasty they were! The service was great, they checked up on us a couple of times to see if we needed anything and to ask how everything was. The blended Margaritas were really nice! They have a great selection of Tequilas and a full bar in the restaurant. Great atmosphere for inside or outside dining, very clean bathrooms (weird to mention, but important to me). I'll be moving down to south county this year and this will be a regular spot to eat for me, most definitely. I very highly recommend Old Juan's Cantina for couples, family, groups - they can accommodate all!
Staying here in Oceana for a week. Already been here twice. Yes it’s convenient, but the atmosphere and the food is great. Both times we have sat in the bar. Friendly staff and regulars make it feel like home. We met an elderly couple who drive from SLO a couple times a week to enjoy! Check them out if you are in the area.
We had fantastic meals. The portions were perfect, fairly priced and great service. We went on a Friday night and they were pretty busy but we didn't have to wait too long for a booth for 4 and our food came out within 15 minutes of ordering, hot and delicious. We'd definitely go back.
First time here and the service was already great, every staff was friendly and the whole entire restaurant is unique. Mostly I love to point out the retro vibe feeling and the wall art from every corner. They have some sort of shrine thats set up beautifully, the fake animals got me but I love it. Mainly the geometric style art near some tables is an eye cathcer for me. I had a quick appetizer and beers from draft. The beer was cold and its supposed to, because I've had some drafts thats not up to cold temp before on other bars. Overall, I love the restaurant and it was live on a normal weekday.
Great environment, tasty and fancy looking drinks and delicious food. The location is perfect as it is close to Pismo beach and we stopped by for lunch after an ATV trip at the dunes. The server was friendly and kept checking on us for drinks and food. Serving size of the food was good. We passed by the restaurant the night before and it was fairly busy with nicely decorated lights both inside and out. Enough parking for everyone!
Great old restaurant feel. Scrumptious food. Fast service as we were a party of 11. We will definitely go back.

Food was good $14 for lunch special with good choices
Unbeatable atmosphere, clean restrooms, good service, pretty okay food. The margaritas are (in my opinion) overpriced and mediocre. The peach and mango lemonades are made with syrup but for the strawberry lemonade they muddle the fruit themselves. The lemonade itself is pretty bad though. I would absolutely recommend this place for that classic Mexican restaurant experience. For the food itself, you can find much better much cheaper elsewhere.
In town to visit the granddaughter, and she suggested Old Juan's Cantina for dinner. We had been here a few years back, and though we thought the food was good, felt it was a little pricey. This time we were in town on a Tuesday, so we had the Taco Tuesday special that they had. We felt the service was good, the food tasty, and the price good, for what you got. It would be our Tuesday night go to, if we lived in the area. Good chips and salsa, we left full, and the staff was friendly.
Food was good. Had the chicken mole enchiladas and enjoyed the mole which was heavy on mexican chocolate.
Vegans & those with dairy allergies beware - The complimentary chips have dairy! Unfortunately it's only mentioned at the bottom of the menu in small text, so I ate half a basket before realizing they have cheese (I confirmed with the server). Luckily my allergy is very mild, but it wouldn't hurt for the servers to mention that as they're being dropped off! That's my only complain, everything else was great! The server was awesome; when I asked about dairy in the chips she went and got me some fresh made with no dairy. They were even better than the complimentary chips in my opinion, and they gave me a huge plate of them! I got the calabaza tacos and they were very good. The sauce was great, the vegan feta was nice, and the filling was great. They were small, but the price reflected that so I can't complain. I was able to order a side of beans and rice (vegan at the time of writing this at least. Just ask for no cheese) as well; the rice was decent, it needed some more flavor. The beans were very good. If the dairy in the chips was mentioned and the rice was improved it would definitely be 5 stars from me! The former issue might seem picky to some, but food allergy issues sometimes come out of nowhere. I think this is the first Mexican restaurant I've been to that has dairy on their chips. Luckily my dairy allergy is very mild, but I know some people aren't as lucky (mine used to be worse). If the restaurant didn't offer any vegan options then it might be a different story, but they have a handful of vegan options on their menu so having the dairy in chips be clear would be awesome. I'll definitely be back!
They did a great job creating an outdoor experience in the parking lot!! I was not overly impressed with the food. It was good but I wouldn't say the best Mexican ever. The rice and beans were room temperature. I wrote it off as it was cold and windy outside. The tamale was uneven with masa. As I started to eat it I was amazed that there was a thin layer of masa. As we delved in the masa got thicker. At least we know their homemade. The pork had a great flavor and was very moist/tender. The Chili Relleno was lightly battered with a good amount of cheese. I did enjoy both!! The Carnitas was a huge portion. The pork was plentiful. Again the pork had a good flavor, moist and tender. The cucumber Margarita was awesome. I miss it was in a pint glass. Between the cucumber slices, lime wedges and ice there was very little drink.
Great little hideaway in Oceano! Enjoyed the guacamole, jalapeño poppers and a monster burrito we split. Service was fast and friendly . Appreciate the staff working ( not staying home collecting free money) and making our night out that much enjoyable. Would have given 5 stars but they are so efficient that our appetizers were only minutes ahead of main course .
Came in with family members for dinner. We were a table of 3 and were sat within 15 minutes. Kyle was our waiter. Great job Kyle. We ordered the chili Verde, the Adobe poblano, and the #3 Mexican Combo. Chips and salsa were brought to the table and were very delicious. We also ordered a Margarita, poured with a heavy hand a d was oh so refreshing. Our food was brought out and everything was delicious. The toastada was placed under the enchilada so it was not crispy. Thank you for a wonderful dinner experience. Place is on the noisier side.
We are on vacation in the area and found this excellent Mexican restaurant based on ratings snd reviews. We were lucky to get the Taco Tuesday special for the table. It was delicious! You have a choice of meat (fixed portion but good amount), rice, bean, cheese, tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, and of course tortillas. The $25 deal that was way too much for the two of us, we were hardly able to make a dent, it is definitely enough for 3, maybe even 4 people! The environment and decor was very pleasant and contemporary, and staff were all friendly.
The food was okay. I wasn't a fan of the enchilada sause or the refried beans. The chips and salsa were delicious. Plenty on the menu to choose from so if i do go back il try something else. The prices for things were a bit high in my opinion. The staff was very friendly and attentive.
Love this place, but they need to update some things like the menu Some of the dishes are bland, a little too similar to cafeteria food. For the price it’s ok. They do have a great bar area.
This is an older Mexican restaurant with a dated interior but great service and great good with large portions. Red and green salsa with wonderful chips were served right away with water. We had homemade tortilla soup, veggie enchiladas, a combo plate of chili relleno and chicken enchilada, and a mole enchilada plate. All were delicious and the portions were very generous. We will be back!
We truly have enjoyed Old Juan's Cantina in the past. This experience tonight wasn't the best. We had a reservation for 11 people. We had to wait much longer than we thought. There were at least four of us in the party that received food that was not hot. The food wasn't as tasty as usual. Our waitress Chelsea was very good, very friendly and I have no complaints with her. I'm certain we will give Old Juan's another chance but it could be a little while.
Good menu, has the regular items but also different items you might not expect. Had the Mexican veggie bowl, generous portion and very tasty. Tortilla chips and two salsas, red & green, were also brought to the table. Salsas were also tasty, maybe could use a bit more heat. Good service and the decor is a traditional Mexican theme, casual, comfortable, inviting. This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant in the five cities area.
We ordered the enchiladas chicken mole. I thought they tasted a little too sweet, but my wife is Hispanic and said they tasted great. The rice and refried beans were good. The chips and salsa were just okay. We also ordered the lime margaritas, which tasted average. The staff was efficient and friendly. The prices were a little high, even for California.
First time at Old Juan’s Cantina and ate a lot of food. The shrimp fajitas and jalapeno poppers were good. The vegan tacos were surprisingly delicious. My only complaint was lack of heat, temperature wise and spice wise. Food was all a little tepid. The chips were stale. If everything had a little more heat and flavor, and chips were fresh, I’d give it 5 stars.
Old Juans has an extensive menu . It seems to be busy all the time not just when the tourist are in town.

It was a bit busy waited 15 minutes to be seated. Bummed that they didn't have Aguas frescas. The food was good and flavorful. I had the chicken mole enchiladas, warning if you don't like chocolate in your mole these enchiladas are not for you, the sauce is sweet. The TJ taco sampler was delicious.
I really loved going to the beach. It was nice to come here but I feel the food couple have had a little more flavor. The staff was friendly and the place was clean but I think when I visit the beach again I think I would like to try another place. But if you need a nice meal then this is a nice place :)
We stopped in for lunch. Service and atmosphere were were just fine. I will say we were surprised regarding relatively high prices and small portions.
Just love the ambiance..a true delight with an authentic Mexican flare! We sat at the bar and the bartender was very friendly and service was good. The chips, salsa and fresh Pico de Gallo was great! However, the food was mediocre at best, I'm sad to say. The carnitas was dry and the chili relleno was doughy. The salad and Chipotle dressing was excellent!
I don’t understand such high reviews. It was mediocre at best. The Mexican pizza had no flavor. The tortilla soup had olives in it, which I found strange. I’ve had much better tamales. The salsa they bring to the table reminds me of pace picante sauce. The margaritas didn’t taste like it had any tequila in it. It tasted like lemonade. No one greeted me when I entered the building. I would suggest finding a more authentic Mexican restaurant. Our server was nice, the food just wasn’t worth another trip. They did have a nice patio as well.

I will not go back.
