Opinions de Hunan Cafe #2 Alameda
a must have! lily is the sweetest lady and we’re so fortunate to have found such a gem in the community - definitely recommend to any lover of chinese food! super fans of the vegetable chow mein, beef chow fun, combination fried rice, orange chicken, sautéed green beans!
This restaurant served quality food at a speed that rivaled any fast food restaurant. The restaurant itself is sparsely decorated and located in a tiny building which gave it a great neighbourhood vibe. The staff was great and gave us helpful recommendations. If you like spicy, I would definitely recommend the Hunan chicken.
Lily and her family are the kindest restaurant owners in SF. If you’re spending your money anywhere else in SF for chinese food you are making a mistake!
Best-kept secret! Hunan Cafe is a hole in the wall in a more residential area of the Outer Richmond. It doesn’t look like much and I haven’t seen people eating in it but it must do a big take out and delivery business because the food is amazing! So fresh and the noodles and potsticker wrappers taste homemade. I bought 3 dishes, rice, and potstickers for $40 (before tip). This is my go to Chinese restaurant
So I grew up on 37th ave and now I live by the beach. I discovered the Lovely Lilly and her husband -(he's in the back cooking!) a few years ago and am so very glad to see that they survived the pandemic! The quality of the products and portion size is Awesome I mean, my teen daughter and I were able to eat 2x!! on MongolianBeef add Broccoli and Side of Rice:) The potstickers were a little too thick but the Crab Rangoons are a hit! Will Always return for a bit of Hunan and the charm of this homegrown gem!!
Some of the best Chinese food I've had ever. General Tso's (Cho's) was well sauced, crispy beef was nice and crispy, green beans were very flavorful, eggplant was nice and purple, scallion pancakes where like pizza's! We had a wonderful time with out family.
A local gem! They do takeout only but they are super fast and priced so well, and the food is very flavorful and not greasy at all. Lily is the sweetest! Tip: if you are able to wait for the food (which is very fast), reduce plastic use by bringing your own containers, they will pack the food for you :)
Love this place and the lovely owners. Such a great local spot for the neighborhood. Feels like such a classic take out place that will always have your back. Food comes out crazy fast too. I love you hunan cafe!!!!
Amazing little Chinese food restaurant run by a husband/wife combo - some of the hardest working folks around! Lily always works the front and is the sweetest person you’ll ever meet. Everything I’ve ever had here has been delicious and fresh, but the Mongolian chicken is one of my favs. You can’t beat the prices here either! It’s a special place, go see for yourself!
We passed through on our way back to the airport for a quick dinner. Lily is the nicest person and she gave us plates and chopsticks and silverware. I wish we could move back but I’m glad I could grab some food from her. I can’t wait for our next visit.
As everyone has said before, Miss Lilly is the sweetest person on earth! I had the chicken with black pepper sauce upon her recommendation and it was absolutely delicious! I can’t wait to go back. Don’t pass up Hunan Cafe #2!
We were visiting the area from abroad and didn’t know that they didn’t do dine-in really, but the lady was happy for us to eat in as long as we were happy getting our food in takeaway boxes, which was just fine. Decent food, good portions, good prices, and the lady running the place was just lovely.
Fantastic food and Lily is the nicest person! We love this place in spite of its total lack of ambience. Definitely a take spot rather than dine in ( though there are tables, too). Chicken fried rice and cashew chicken are my favorites
Takeout only and dinner hours only. Black pepper chicken and cashew chicken are so good! Good flavors and fresh veggies. A favorite takeout spot for the neighborhood
This Chinese restaurant is one of the best I’ve had the pleasure to eat. The owners are a couple and the make the best Chinese food in the city. Prices are also reasonable too with good portions. Although it says that they are open early, I asked the owner and she said they are now open from 4:00pm to 9:00pm. It would be really great that people buy Chinese food from here when they are craving for some. I live in South Bay, but when I come to the city, I make a trip to this lovely restaurant.
We had the pleasure of dining at Hunan Cafe #2, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was outstanding, and served promptly and very hot. It was absolutely delicious! The host, Miss Lilly, is a sweet, charming lady, and made us feel like we were dining in her home. She chatted with us about the neighborhood, and asked us about our home area. Overall, a wonderful dining experience! This is not a fancy place, but if you want authentic Asian food at an unbelievable price by a friendly, helpful staff, you really should check this place out.
Easy to find. Only customers at the time we ate. Lots of people ordering takeout, though. Lady owner is very friendly. Food is definitely worth the price -hot, fast, and tasty. You will get filled up with the portion size. Pot stickers are huge. Will definitely go back when I am in the area.
Incredible spot for take out! Lily is the sweetest person you'll ever meet and her food is fresh, quick, and always delicious. We order from here at least 2-3 times a month.
Yesterday was my fiance's and my last night in San Francisco and I had to save the address to this establishment so that I could write a kind review. The service was impeccable and the waitstaff attentive and neatly dressed. I felt like I was a guest and not just a person filling a table. The best Chinese restaurant out of all the ones I have tried (and have we tried a lot in San Francisco!! He loves Chinese food) and best service. Waiter told us that we should only get a plate and share it as well as an entree and share it. We did upon his suggestion and we were happy to have listened to him. Excellent owner! Portions were enough for two or even three. My fiance and I left the restaurant satisfied and happy. Thank you for such excellent service!!!!
I have been eating here so long Lily has mine and my husband's favorite menu items memorized. She literally got me through law school so I didn't starve. She's a gem, and the menu is solid and a scrumptious adventure. Try the salt and pepper shrimp, the crab puffs, sesame chicken or spicy eggplant for some of our go to's! The food is prepared quickly and reliably, and is still a great value. Do yourself a favor and join the club of rabid, long-time fans.
Kindest and sweetest owners in the world! <3 These other one star reviews about the building itself should take a look at the affordable prices on the menu... Anyone with eyes can see it’s a hole in the wall. The amazing food is what matters. Also if you try to come close to closing time, of course you will be turned away (like literally every other restaurant)... Don’t be entitled and just enjoy the food! 🙃
This restaurant is fantastic! I ordered a huge meal that took less than ten minutes to be prepped and packed ready to go and it was delicious too. The service is really friendly and there’s a great positive energy at the place. A staple in the outer richmond for sure.
My favorite Chinese take-away place. The lady at the counter is very kind and attentive. The food is good, with many options in pork, chicken, and seafood. Also, a large variety of vegetarian options. Reasonably priced.
Really excellent value. basic, reliable, takeout Chinese (to be fair, very basic--probably fewer garnishes and frills than panda express) At some of the other neighborhood takeout the sauce is great and price is higher but can count the few pieces of meat floating in it--Here, each entree is packed with quality meat (no gristle disguised as protein) and fresh vegetables. People extremely nice too. For the value, Hunan#2 is hard to beat.
Definitely one of my favorite Chinese food places ever! I crave this place a lot. Lily is also the nicest, sweetest, and funniest person. You can see how sometimes she gets overwhelmed with the amount of orders coming in since she's the only one dealing with customers while her husband does the cooking in the back. Truly a good hole-in-the-wall place. It's not about the service or the decorations. We once had to wait because her husband (the cook) went out to do a delivery and I thought that was hilarious and awesome (only happened once) and in the meantime I chatted with Lily. My favorite things are: - egg flower soup - chicken chow mein - spicy chicken with string beans - five taste chicken
Really great food especially for the price. My wife and I get take out from here once every month or so and we've never had problems. The woman who runs it is very friendly and very efficient. Green Onion Pancakes and Five Taste Chicken are somethings you should really try.
This hole in the wall Chinese food spot is my favorite of all the Chinese restaurants in the Richmond. Probably because I don't know what to order at the higher $ places, but why spend more when Hunan Cafe #2 consistently delivers excellent and hardy Chinese food at very affordable prices. The lady who runs the customer facing side is very sweet and I've enjoyed every interaction with her. I just wish it was across the street!
I’m pretty sure the lady that works at front is the nicest human in the whole world. So friendly, so welcoming. The food is unbelievably fresh, not heavy at all. Super tasty, 100% the best Chinese place around. Trip #2 update: order the ginger onion chicken. It is absolutely fantastic. Furthermore, Lily actually tried to come out in the atmospheric river to bring my food to my car because literally, like mentioned before, she is the best person on the planet.
amazing food! very quick service and huge portions!
Fantastic. Decor is straight from the 70s so most people get takeaway. The restaurant seats about 20 max. We came after walking Land’s End. The argh Rolls and giant pot stickers were a great way to start the meal. We followed up with Mongolian beef, fried rice and king pao chicken. Delicious. Everything chopped small for easy eating. The owner is also so nice. Great service.
First night in San Francisco was a success because of this friendly and affordable Chinese treasure trove. The dishes we ordered were all fantastic and my rabid family scarfed them all four dishes down whithin minutes. Each one was executed very well and was delicious with the accompanying rice. I am sure I have waited longer for my food at McDonalds than at this place! More like Hunan Cafe #1
The food , is great !! This is great authentic local restaurant . If you care for interior design of restaurant this is not you place . But if you value , good food , small local unique business than you will enjoy . And the prices for what you get is absolutely cheap ! Great quality and fast service !Highly recommend this place

Very nice owner, she’s very friendly. All the food is made to order so the food you get will be piping hot and fresh. I love that. The fried chicken is more than perfect. It’s like the chicken I cook at home! It’s so juicy, perfect garlic taste and right amount of seasoning. I will go here every time I’m in San Francisco, the prices are affordable to anybody.
I’ve been coming here for takeout for over 10 years! Lily is absolutely the biggest sweetheart and their food is cooked with love. It doesn’t taste overly salted or MSGed out. Give them all your money and enjoy some hearty Chinese takeout. The restaurant itself is tiny and a bit dingy, but that’s the charm of Mom and Pop restaurants! Oh, and in case you were wondering, I just ordered three dishes and the side of rice which totaled out to about $40
Best hot and sour soup, as well as chicken egg flour soup ever. The woman behind the counter is super friendly and very nice, while the chef in the back throws it down every time. Great food
Really great food and wonderful service. Very good prices too. Call ahead- Google said they were closed on Tuesday but they were open for dinner! Would recommend carry out.
This place hits. I’m no foodie but when me and my parents want a quick meal, it’s hot, fresh, hits the spot for a great price. We’ve always liked what we get and plenty of leftovers that reheat pretty good. The lady there is truly super nice. Love this local spot
The woman running it is so nice! Fresh, healthy, tasty Chinese food. You can tell they pour their love into the food. Cannot recommend more.
It’s literally the best place you could go to eat it has the best Chinese food ever and it is my favorite restaurant and you should take your kids yourself you parents you grandparents you get what I’m saying this is a great restaurant and you should absolutely go here I’ve been here a lot and it is open most of the time and u absolutely love the food and would give it 100000000 stars if I could but I can’t so 5 will do the waiter is really nice and the place is old but they do an excellent job cleaning it up and it is very nice and I am convinced that she is undoubtedly the nicest person ever. In conclusion, the food is the best ever, the people there are extremely nice the waiters name being lily if you are wondering, also the atmospheres really nice as it is clean. Go there now or you will regret it.
This is our go-to take out and the woman at the front is the BEST! Love this place and will always support it.
My favorite place EVER to order take-out! Fresh, tasty, good sized portions for a very reasonable price, and Lily (one of the owners) is SO nice and gets to know everyone personally. I still remember when she welcomed us to the neighborhood the first time we ate there, and she's remembered us (and our favorite dishes) ever since!
This place is prime example of those staple SF neighborhood take out spots that are slowly disappearing. Places where you can find good food at a reasonable price. The owners are really friendly, even to a newcomer like myself, and seem to have a loyal neighborhood following. Interior is pretty simple to dine in, most customers do take out. The hot and sour soup is nice on a cold day.
On a review binge and I wanted to share love to my favorite Chinese spot in the outer Richmond when I use to live nearby here. The friendliest lady works there and always remembered everything my friends and I were up to. Remembered our orders, took care of us and always ensured the food was top notch. Haven’t been there in over a year but looking to make my way back ASAP!!
Someone mentioned before that the lady behind the counter is the nicest human being ever. I 1000 % agree. I’ve been their regular customer and been ordering chicken xiao mein 95% of the time. The portion the price and service everything is amazing

Small Chinese restaurant own by nice older Chinese couple. 1st time ordered chicken w/ garlic sauce spicy over rice big portion under $9 looks fantastic with a lot of sliced chicken breast and veggies. Gave 4 stars bc sauce is sweeter than normal otherwise 5.

I really wanted to love this place but ultimately left disappointed. The table service I received could not have been better - she was patient and polite given how busy the takeout orders were. What disappointed me was the food. The egg rolls were decent but the sesame chicken was dry and tough with no flavour or spice. I trekked out to Richmond to try this place and unfortunately will not come back.
This review is really just let others know that this restaurant does not offer dine-in. I didn’t see that noted anywhere in the reviews I looked at so I just want to let others know that, while there is a dining space, they are takeout only. Giving three stars to be fair, even though the experience was not as expected.

The menu that appears in the photos and is linked to the Google Location shows WAY cheaper prices than reality. The difference in cost was about 50% more expensive. And whomever answered the phone was aware of this when they failed to tell me the total price of my order (or anything else related to pricing) until I showed up to the restaurant and handed her my card. I began to say something about this discrepancy, when I was dismissed, "the prices are cheaper online, and we don't know how to change it. And they are still cheaper than most other places in the city." I interpreted that as a fairly clear sign that they know about the issue and are using it as a way to get people in the door to prey on their circumstance. I am leaving this review solely because it felt like a malicious business practice. I want to be clear that the staff was incredibly polite, and the food was definitely acceptable. I'm just left with a sour taste in my mouth because the idea that they would take advantage of their customers leaves me to wonder what other ways they are being deceptive
