We ordered catering for a large group of 140 people. We order street taco trays and all the accompaniments. Everything was fresh and so delicious! All trays were ready for our pick up time. Everyone was very professional. Thank you! We will be back!
I have been eating here for over 20 years. I love the crab enchiladas and ground beef enchiladas. The service is always excellent. The owner is really nice and he has always treated me like family.
La Penca Azul is my go to for Mexican food. I usually order for pickup but when I go inside, it's always a good crowd. And they have a lot of different tequila. Great service and the food is really good too.
Wow, happy music set the tone of the evening and the delicious food was the cherry on top. The staff was so welcoming and I was delightfully satisfied with my dining experience this evening. Definitely will refer friends and family and plan on dining at LA Penca Azul again soon.
When the taco truck is closed, we love coming to the restaurant for tasty tacos. The tacos are so good and the salsa for the chips are homemade and also worth coming in the restaurant. One thing that bugs me is when they charge for cheese differently every time. Sometimes they’ll charge you cheese for each tacos and sometimes it’s one cheese charge for all the tacos. Overall, this is our favorite taco restaurant on the east bay.
Not sure about the food, but the bar is well stocked with a variety of tequilas and our bartender, Jessica, was amazing. We had 4 different drinks, all of then excellent.. She was attentive and friendly, even when the bar got busy. And, she had a great playlist going with hot reggaeton beats. The chips were warm and crunchy. Will go back to try happy hour for sure.
We came, we were seated, we ordered, we ate and drank! We have been to many events with the food truck and never disappointed, while on a date lunch in Alameda my wife said lets go! She had the combo fajitas and I had a triple combo taco enchilada and tamale i had a top shelf and she had skinny margaritas she also had a shot of centinario tequila. We loved our meals And, the service was excellent.
I'm usually wary of any "authentic" Mexican restaurant serving nachos, but thankfully it wasn't all Tex Mex. Menu is very large and the plates are very generous. My happy hour classic margarita was great and the food is good quality. Unfortunately our server couldn't answer questions about plate size, but otherwise the ambience felt like Mexico :)
I like to come here because of the food and drinks. Happy hour starts at 2:00 and they have a nice menu. The peach and mango Margaritas are delicious. The enchiladas on the happy hour menu only come with the green sauce. They do not accept the gift cards from American express, MasterCard and a few others. Cash and credit cards only. They have hand sanitizers at every table. They have inside and outside seating as well
This review is for people who want to know what I consider to be a good restaurant. This Mexican restaurant is extremely popular with the locals and is well-known. The food is excellent, portions are large, service is amazing. Quality on all fronts is superb: shrimp are fresh and huge, chicken breast is used not thigh meat, chips are non oily, salsa is good [needs chunks of onion, pepper tho], fresh tortillas, etc. Also note the diversity and wide variety on the menu, all at good prices for California. Fish is fresh and can be used in all entrees. Note they also provide cold CANS of Diet Coke to ensure quality; not flat DC mixed w carbonated local tap water…blech. Also notice whole beans are offered not just lard infused refried beans. Utah’s mediocre Mexican restaurants need to come here to learn how it is done! Mostly they are garbage.
Great small restaurant to eat out at. Owners where very friendly and hardworking. I had the tota and the esquite, which were both very flavorful and packed with condiments/food items of my choosing. The flan dessert was absolutely decadent. Overall great place to eat at and at a good price. Definitely recommend giving it a try if you are in the area.
I went to this restaurant/bar last week and it is really nice. Inside had plenty of seats and a nice bar. A pleasant atmosphere with a family friendly vibe. We decided to sit outside and were served …
Very good food for a long time. Fair prices. Good service and nice people. It has done a good business for a long time.\n\nI also like their place in Bay Farm Island on Island Drive.

A friend invited me to eat there; she said she had smelled the food from there and that it was wonderful. The first time I went, the food really was wonderful, especially the cactus salad. The second time wasn't as pleasant; I ordered the same food as the first time, and the tilapia was soaked in oil, and the beans didn't taste very appetizing. But even so, it's worth a visit for anyone who just wants to have a drink; there's a bar in the back with TVs showing sports.
La Penca Azul has the best Mexican food In Alameda. I come here to eat with my family and friends and I enjoy my dinner every time. I usually order the street tacos, or tamale dinner. Good flavor In the steak tacos very authentic and the Tamale plate has a very good green sauce on it, love the beans and rice too. I would say maybe work on the service, no utensils one time and are waitress was not checking In on us and took a while to get are bill. Good food, give them a try!
The fish seemed refried and didn’t taste very fresh. However, everything else was good, with great service and fast attention.
Stopped in here for dinner on whim- cuz hungry. Nice staff, fast service, and very generous portions. House margarita was just meh (but only $12.00) prices were very reasonable. They didn’t skimp on the chips and salsa. We dined I. But there’s lots of outdoor dining space available. Bathroom was a bit grunge. All in all, I’d definitely eat here again.
Their Salsa and chips are amazing. We were promptly served our drinks with them upon sitting down at our table. They use corn tortillas for their street tacos which is way different from what I'm used to being served on flour tortillas. My only gripe would be the prices. I live in Sacramento where even the best taco spots only charge $1.75 for street tacos. Here it is $2.99!

Food is good. Service is excellent. ambience is OK. Everybody here is attentive asking suggesting feeling like you belong. Thank you for the great service.
$30 for 6 tacos that were just ok, and the meat had a significant amount of tendons/ fat. \nWhat happened? That's too expensive for mediocrity.

Ducking into Azul Taco Bar for a late lunch, I was immediately drawn to their taco bar setup—there’s something satisfying about watching your meal come together right before your eyes. The fresh tortilla game here is undeniably strong. Watching the masa transform into warm, pliable tortillas as soon as you place your order creates that authentic taqueria anticipation. I went with two carne asada and two al pastor, and appreciated the extensive salsa bar where you can customize to your heart’s content (yes, even rice if that’s your thing). The horchata deserves special mention—creamy, well-spiced, and the perfect complement to the meal. The back patio offers a pleasant escape from the midday rush with ample seating. While the tortillas are made fresh, they lack the structural integrity needed for a proper taco experience. The soft texture crumbles under the weight of juicy meats, turning what should be handheld perfection into a messy affair. The execution is decent and the atmosphere works, but at these prices, I expect more authentic flavors and better value. The fresh tortillas are a nice touch, but they can’t justify the premium pricing when the overall experience feels more upscale-casual than genuine street food. Worth a try if you’re in the neighborhood, but I’ll be seeking out more authentic options that deliver better bang for your buck.
We've had great meals in the past, but this time something was a little off. It was a Saturday, wasn't too busy at dinner time...but the staff didn't seem too attentive. No silverware on the table, a nachos appetizer was brought out with no plates and the silverware, they filled an order wrong (ordered a shrimp enchilada but came as beef but decided not to waste the food by requesting a do-over). Food: the nachos were good but again no silverware or plates (we asked for plates and a nice gentleman helped us but our main dishes had arrived before he returned with the plates). Every dish that had beef was dry-tacos, burrito. We ordered lengua burritos and they were a fine dice and a bit dry. Ordered the fish taco meal and the fish was flaked into bits, not grilled or fried fish pieces. The receipt came but it was hard to decipher what had been ordered, especially since we got beef enchilada instead of shrimp. Couldn't tell if the waitress was tired or disinterested, she didn't seem as welcoming as other wait staff in the past. Food was OK but the service may be a greater factor when deciding to return, unfortunately. Really wanted to love the place like before...
I came to this spot late at night, and it was very crowded, which is always a good sign! I ordered two tacos--one al pastor and one pork--and they were packed with meat and full of flavor. The salsa …
La penca Azul seems to be back to relatively normal operations post covid-19 shut down. Not serving fountain sodas yet, only canned sodas. street tacos were tasty and the chips and salsa are back …
La Penca Azul in Alameda was a letdown overall. The atmosphere feels very dated - dim lighting, old furnishings, and a general sense that the place hasn’t been refreshed in years. It didn’t add charm, just made the experience feel a bit tired. Although the variety of booze in the glass windows gave an interesting design touch. The food was overly heavy, and not in a satisfying way. I struggled to finish my breakfast, light order meal, and my stomach felt weighed down for hours afterward. That lingering discomfort was enough for me to leave the leftovers behind, which I tent not to. Service started off well, with friendly attention at the beginning, but unfortunately, it dropped off sharply. Toward the end of the meal, it was hard to get anyone’s attention, and the checkout process was a mess. They completely forgot about us, which was especially frustrating during a lunch break with limited time. There were a couple of okay moments, but overall, not a place I’d be quick to return to.

I had a very disappointing experience at La Penca Azul. I was seated at my own table and was not part of a larger party nearby. I did not order with them and was not sitting with them. However, my charges were placed on their tab without my consent. I repeatedly asked the waitress to remove my charges from that party’s bill because I was dining separately. She never once asked if I was with that group. Instead of correcting the mistake professionally, she refused and began dismissing my concerns, saying, “It’s only a few dollars,” which was very insulting. The issue was not the amount. It was the principle and the fact that gratuity was being added incorrectly. Eventually, she split the bill but only separated my food items and still charged gratuity. At that point, I did not want to continue going back and forth. I had a 1-year-old with me who was crying, and I was ready to leave. Service overall was poor. The waitress brought my food but never returned to check on me. I was not offered a booster seat for my child . I had to ask for one myself. The entire experience felt dismissive and unprofessional, and having two children. I expect better service and accountability when dining out. Unfortunately, this experience was unacceptable.
Had a bad experience , I been here several times . Usually we order the same food but this time we got box jalapeños poppers . Our food had no flavor and now they lost our service . Wont be back !!! Jack in the box has better jalapeño poppers and for cheaper .
nice spot, for some reason they made me and my wife sit in the back room alone with no one else, they didnt bring any other customers back here either. it felt very intentional. we werent bad customers either so we were confused about why we had to sit far from everyone else in the establishment. the place wasnt even near packed at the time we arrived. it felt like a micro aggression.
