Opinions de The Rake at Admiral Maltings Alameda
All of the local beers on tap are brewed with malt from Admiral Maltings. It's a great way to learn how the same base product, with roasting and other differences, is made in to so many different types and styles of beer. We arrived late on a warm February Saturday, so they had sold out of most food items.
Beer and food was superb, had an Alluvium with tasty bean and rice bowl (with avocado and kimchi, the salsa was real flavorful) along with a delicious soft warm pretzel. The pickled cabbage and chips that came with the hotdog were a delightful combination, I was surprised at how good the sharp flavor n crunch went together.
My mom and sister and I stopped in while driving around the old navy base my mom used to be stationed at and we had an absolutely lovely time. John the bartender gave us such amazing service and the music they were playing was top tier! All the staff was so friendly and easy to talk to. The food was amazing and I discovered my new favorite cider here! Highly recommend. Amazing atmosphere and indoor and outdoor seating. Beautiful plants everywhere. Cant wait to come back! Definitely stop by!
Shaded outdoor seating, perfect for lunch or afternoon. In door seating with windows to outside or to view melting floor. Beer selection excellent, can get masters before getting full or half glass.
We eat here frequently and the rotating chef driven menu is always giving us something new and tasty to try. All their beers and spirits are made with malt from admiral Maltings and you can see the malting floor where the action happens from the booths inside!
Awesome place, good seating options, and whoever is curating their beer list knows their stuff. The vibe is way more chill than their sort of chaotic neighbors. Food is also excellent. Hoping that they do a brined chicken or fried chicken sandwich (but the chicken salad sandwich is amazing anyway) Mad props to the staff, they the best.
Wonderful service, very attentive, great food and cocktails. Not sure why anyone would go to Almanac with their mediocre IPAs when you could go here.
The Rake at Admiral Maltings offers a wide variety of fresh brews made with the company's malts. There's a large outdoor seating area with many socially distanced tables, each either under a cover or with its own extendable umbrella for shade, should it be needed. Food is also offered...and everything I've tried so far has been good. Their chicken sandwich, for instance, is made from freshly roasted fryer chickens from their own smoker. There's also a smaller patio surrounded by a planter wall, if you prefer a slightly more sheltered area in which to enjoy your drink. Whether you're just out for a beer with friends, or want to grab some food, it's proven to be a group favorite. Staff is friendly, service is good. I recommend you give it a try.
The Rake was gracious enough to rent out their amazing space to us for our wedding reception in 2023. Great menu, great staff, great memories. They’ll forever hold a special place in our hearts for hosting us on our big day. We’d give it 10/5 stars if we could 🍻
Awesome spot! Tends to be way less crowded than nearby areas(a mystery because its awesome) which is a plus for me. Beers from different places so youll find something you like. Food is solid. Staff is super nice and vibes are solid. Highly recommend. My go to for beers and chilling/reading.
Beer selection rotates but they have something for everyone including wine and cider for those who don't care for beer. The food is good as well. I had a grilled cheese sandwich and my wife liked her chicken pesto salad sandwich. Friendly staff and not too crowded.
wonderful spot to hang out with your date and have a cold one
Great drinks and small plates. Always plenty of outdoor tables, good (not too loud) music, dog friendly, and nice staff who will remember you.
A really interesting concept for a malt house. They offer free tours a few times a week. Staff is kind and helpful Great beers on tap and the food options are great too! A fantastic stop while you're at Alameda point. I stop here when I'm too early for my ferry to the city and I recommend you do too!
This is now our regular spot. We usually bike here from opposite end of the Island. Beer selection is plentiful and constantly rotating. And excellent. Most crowds go next door to almanac but this is the place to be for the music alone. Food is also surprisingly good.
This place is such a gem! The hospitality is incredible and the food is divine. Would definitely drive 51 minutes to eat here again.
We were originally planning to go to the Almanac Adventureland next door, but it was way too crowded and the lines were way too long for both beer and food. So we went to the Rake and it was everything we needed. The beer was awesome, with a varied menu. The food was amazing- my son and I both had the grilled cheese with quince jam and apples. Very tasty. There was plenty of room. The service was great. Very friendly. There was even a cornhole game as competition to the Adventureland next door. We will definitely return.
Fantastic atmosphere with an ocean view was beautiful. They had a great beer selection with several whiskeys made from their signature malt. Great experience.
Come out and check this place out it's really cool the inside has all the Hops layout inside a room and you could see them through the glass. They also have a really good selection of beers. A nice open floor plan so when you're in Alameda stop by and have yourself a cold one.
Such a great place to experience beers made with their Californian grown and malted grains!
Excellent food, friendly service and of course great beers. Really nice staff, they let me plug in my electric scooter! Pulled pork plate was very good! Went back a couple weeks later for the tour, very cool! You gotta check it out.
Live near by and have been here several times and they usually have at least 5 to 6 beers in my comfort zone. They have a limited food menu which includes a few appetizers and I really like the pickled quail eggs. Inside and outside seating is available, and they offer tours on Wednesday evenings.
Admiral Maltings doesn’t actually make beer, but at their adjacent pub/taproom, The Rake, they serve a variety of beers that have been made with their handcrafted malt. The Rake has plenty of shady outdoor seating, safely protected from the parking lot to keep your kids corralled while you’re sipping on a pint and some of the best pretzels around. We’ve seen many parents there with their kiddos at lunch on the weekends. The beer menu changes frequently, featuring different brews made from their malted grain. If you get a chance though, try their sours—they are a personal favorite.
This place is outstanding in service, food and beer! I love hazy IPA’s and there are a few options for me here. I can’t say enough about the soft pretzel. I have never had a pretzel this good! The butter and the cheese. ❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful brewery within walking distance from the port. Excellent food. Couldn't try the beer because I was at work but it looks amazing. They even have giant area to sprout grain.
Awesome Place. So much better than the Garbage Brewery called Almanac next door. Unlike the Almanac this place has a much more varied selection of alcoholic drinks. Friendly Staff. Awesome Malt Headmaster. Compared to the greasy food truck options of the almanac this place has great food and a full kitchen. Will be back again!
You come for the beer but are knocked out by the food! Of course, they have a great selection of beers, including ones that are made with their special malt. There are a couple of breweries in the area so it might be difficult making your decision on which one to visit. The Rake is definitely worth a stop. There is plenty of outdoor seating (good for COVID times) and hand sanitizer on each table. The staff wipe it down between every customer too. It's right next to Almanac so it's kind of like a mini beer row. But let's get to the food. Make sure to get the pretzel. It's warm and delicious and served with cheese AND malt butter. I have never tried malt butter before and now I want it on every carb I can get my hands on. We also tried the mac and cheese (excellent) and salad (meh, but who orders salad at a beer place?) The staff are also super sweet and entertaining. It's a great place to visit on a beautiful day.
I would like to think that my next visit will be as good as the first one. The Sticky Zipper I had from Oakland's Independent Brewing was so tasty. Balanced, hoppy and oh so smooth. What I would have to call a "danger beer" because I would happily drink it till I drop. The food menu is small. Don't skip the egg salad sandwich.

Amazing craft beer bar featuring Bruce made from several breweries which use Admiral malts. Added bonus: the most beautiful tasting glasses I have ever seen at any brewery. Definitely take the tour, it’s an amazing and sustainable project.
Best place to get beer in the area, if not anywhere. If you love beer, come here. (They also have non-beer and non-alcoholic options.) Why do I love it here so much? (1) they make the malt that goes into all of the beer (and spirits) that they sell. This isn't just a fun novelty, though it is fun. The local malt means that your supporting local producers and that you learn more about the ingredients that go into the beer. (2) because of #1, they get beer that you cannot get anywhere else on tap and same goes for some of off-premise selection as well, unless you go directly to the brewery. (3) related to #2, they have two casks! (4) the staff is amazing! They know beer and like people! Whether you're a beer expert and have a specific question or don't know malt from hops (i.e. don't know much about beer) they are there to answer you questions! (5) very family and pet friendly. The food is also good. For vegetarians, I recommend the rice and bean bowl, they use heirloom beans and the rice is also top quality. The only thing that makes a visit a little hard at times is the music, which can be played a bit loud. But I am more sensitive to noise than most people, so I always have noise dampening devices (i.e. various types of earplugs) with me. Other notes: they do pitchers and flights. They do tours of Admiral Maltings on Sundays, at 3p I think.
Great location close by lots of recreational spots on the island and all the homes as well. The Rake has a great selection of brews on tap and great food to enjoy on the chilliest of days. Plenty of parking nearby as well which is welcome especially in the Bay Area. Highly recommended for those in the area or visiting to stop by for a bite and brew.

This place is is a pretty random area but... the building is a cool place to chill with a beer. Loads of outside seating. A nice menu. Clean bathrooms. The parking is under construction right now which only means good things for this little section of Alameda. They have two really great stouts and some pretty good little snacks. It's a warehouse but has an intimate vibe. Apparently they also offer tours on Sundays to learn about what you can watch happening from the windows inside! I should have asked more questions...

Lovely spot, staff are kind, knowledgeable, and, if the banter is going, hilarious. It is 100% dog friendly. Highly recommend the ribs and wings when available, and absolutely ask for their home made sauces - to die for. Sitting indoors, you get a view of the floor-malting facility from the booths and can observe the conversion of grain into malt, which is great. They serve beers and spirits made with their malt to highlight their own products and those of customers. Outside is well shaded in hot months and heated in cooler times.
I always like stopping here for a good beer. Food is not superb but it will do. Beers are very good especially belgiand and saison. Recommended. Update Jan 2026: keep coming here when I around. Still love the variety of beers that come and go! Favorite beer place in Alameda.

I would return for the beer but not the food. The tater tots were not crispy or hot and tasted as though they were made hours ahead of time. Also ordered the brisket sandwich which came with chips and a pickle. The brisket was tender but didn’t taste like it was seasoned at all. The sandwich had spinach, red onion, peppers, an orange sauce and was a bit odd. The flavors didn’t go well with the brisket and left me wishing there was barbecue sauce and a more traditional BBQ flavor profile. The service was friendly, prompt and welcoming. Loved the atmosphere, plenty of outdoor seating at colorful picnic tables and a fair amount of indoor seating as well. We arrived on a Sunday around 3pm, lots of places to sit. Kid friendly, there were lots of families with babies or school age children.
I always wondered why the neighbors are always packed and these guys aren’t. So we decided to give them a shot. So clearly not a brewery, but you can’t hold that against them. Service was a bit odd, not very friendly, and I’ll leave it there. Beer was great, no issues whatsoever. The food wasn’t much to aspire for. And I’m comparing to other spots that offer pub food. I’d be willing to give them another shot, but probably won’t order food. The beer was good and the outdoor seating area was nice.
The beers are great. I love that you guys highlight the breweries that use your malts. Now on to the bad, the brisket. It was honestly the worst 30+ dollar plate of food I can remember. Everything on the plate was bland. The brisket was tough, the fat wasn't rendered, it was completely unseasoned. There was no smoke on the brisket, which is odd for 'bbq'. It was just a tough pile of grey meat. I was also served not hot maybe 60 degrees. The only thing done right about the brisket was it was sliced against the grain.
In a parking lot next to a gym. Off putting atmosphere. Ribs were extremely tough. Under- marinated and undercooked. Sauce was bad, tasted like a tomato based chipotle sauce that didn’t fit the palette of the meats. Links were okay. All sides were under seasoned and no salt or hot sauce was available. Servers seemed upset to be at work. Snack bar style service. Pretzel and beer was great 👍 beer cheese 10/10
Mixed feelings about The Rake at Admiral Maltings. Let's do the positives first. - Great selection of beer - Extremely warm and helpful staff - Nice overall vibe to relax with a few friends and lots of drinks Now for the negatives...well, there was only one negative albeit a rather large one. Their BBQ is awful. Not one single BBQ order was decent. The salads were better than the meat, and the tater tots were decent, but we didn't finish any of the plates we ordered. I would recommend eating somewhere else and then coming here for drinks.
I was very exciting about this place, and I love to support local business. The staffs are friendly and giving us a beer sample, and I can test the freshness of the beer. One of the biggest con are the foods, normally the brewery should have delivery a great food goes along with the great 🍺 beer. I order pull pork sandwich and tater tots, and tater tots is not crispy at all, tastes like it’s soaked in the water. I had to return it. The staff is nice enough to let us return it. Again, come here for good beer, but make sure you had a decent food before you come.

The BBQ is not good. Tri-tip was dry, tasteless, and (blessing in disguise) laughably small portions for the nearly $30 price tag. Tater tots were sad. Although we did like the coleslaw side that includes pickled onions, and the big mixed green salad was very fresh, it is too hard to overlook the expensive and lame meat. Beer menu was heavy on IPAs--we're tired of bitter IPAs and the staff were curt and not interested in helping to pick something out (it's not like they're busy). The food quality is panned in other reviews so does not seem like merely an off day.
