Opinions de Zushi Puzzle Alameda
Fantastic omakase experience!!! From fresh sashimi with truffle oil to crunchy, flavorful handrolls to the most buttery toro, Roger took us on a beautiful culinary journey. He was super knowledgeable and we left happy and full! 10/10 highly recommend
The entire team at Zushi Puzzle consistently create the most innovative and delicious oceanic treats on the West Coast. If you find yourself in San Francisco craving sushi, the choice is clear. Sit back and devour the best cuisine with exceptional top-tier professional service. Highly recommended. There is no substitute
I have been coming to Zushi Puzzle regularly for 12+ years now. And unlike so many places where quality or creativity takes a hit after a while, Roger continues to serve what I believe are some of the most creative, freshest and highest quality dishes in the Bay Area. Not limited to sushi restaurants - among any restaurants. Every visit is an exceptional experience, but if you have time to plan ahead, try to reserve some of the limited seating at the bar. Enjoy!!
We had the omakase at the bar with Chef Roger and I believe it might have been the best meal I've ever had! Roger was a joy to listen to as he explained each fish and gave us tips on the best way to enjoy it. Each plate was seemingly more unique than the last - I will definitely be back!
Our last day in SA and I have to say that Roger was the cherry on the top! Best sushi I had in my life! You have the sit at the bar to get the best experience and taste explosions. Roger was very nice and also told us how to eat each delicious sushi he made. This is a story that I have to tell anyone who will visit SF!!! Thank you very much, Roger!! Please come to Germany and open another restaurant ✌️
Came here for omakase on my birthday today, and this was the BEST omakase experience I’ve EVER had. The fish alone was incredible, but Roger (sushi chef and owner) alone made this an unforgettable experience. Sit at the bar, chat with Roger, and have him educate you and feed you some of the best fish you’ve ever had. Absolutely amazing.
Are you kidding me! If you like sushi then you MUST go here!!! This is not just a place to go on vacation! In fact, it's a reason to go to SF for anything even if it's just to go here! The fish was unbelievably tasty, fresh and extremely well prepared!! It doesn't matter where you live on this planet, if you like sushi, you MUST go here!! Roger is welcoming, helpful, knowledgeable and extremely kind! One of the best food experiences of my life!
This is a singular experience in SF I recommend to everyone. Sit at the sushi bar and let Roger take care of your. Hands down my favorite omakase I’ve ever had.
Roger knows everything possible about the fish he brings in for his customers. But he’s always careful to ask you if you like certain items before placing it in front of you.
Incredible omakase with Roger at the chef’s counter. I love how interactive and thoughtful he is with each guest. Every piece of fish is unique and flavored to perfection! Personally love the hand roll, scallop, tuna flight, ikura and wagyu! His surprise homemade desserts at the end were exceptional.
Prob the best omakase experience I’ve ever had. Incredibly high quality & tender fish, ingenious flavor combinations, all handed to you casually by the chef. The vibe is like a high end dive bar - the bar only seats 8, and Chef Roger stands in front of the guests cutting / torching / seasoning fish. Chef Roger is very friendly and warm. The high price tag was worth the crazy amount of fish we ate. We were told to wave our napkins in surrender if we couldn’t eat any more, and no one did.
Chef Roger just gave us the most amazing sushi dinner event possible! Friends took me here for the Omakase experience at the bar - totally worth it. It is not only about eating high quality food but also learning a lot from Roger about sushi and how to enjoy it best. Thank you my friend - I will come back from Germany to your restaurant for sure ✌🏻️
I wish they had an option for 6, 7 or 8 stars. First, the service was unbelievably good. John not only was helpful and attentive, but he made fantastic suggestions and guided us to an amazing meal. The sushi was amazing. At John's suggestion I had the New Zealand and Scottish salmon nigiri to start and then a series of specially rolls. I'm not usually a big fan of rolls because I feel like some places hide interior ingredients in there. Not the case here. All of the rolls were well balanced and delicious. If you're in the area, don't miss this unassuming little place!
We come a lot to Bay Area from Brasil. No trip would be complete without a wonderful meal here. No idea how source such great fish. Simply unbeatable
Roger is the godfather of SF sushi. He has been serving since 2004. He knows all the best cuts and will show you how to eat sushi the appropriate way. This is a SF local secret. Try to get a bar seat for omakase. He feeds you till your full. The atmosphere screams locals only. Leave your attitude outside and let Roger guide you through an amazing meal. There is rumor he might retire in a couple years. This is one of my favorite places for 🍣 sushi.
Randomly found this place with great reviews and popped in at 7pm on a Saturday wanting to leave the crazy crowds at Fisherman's warf. They were able to seat us right away without reservations and service was spectacular. The sushi was insanely good quality and well priced. The service wasn't super fast because they only have 1 chef who was also doing an omakase seating while we were there but we had our whole meal within 1.5 hrs which we thought was normal speed. Absolutely would come back and recommend!
Read the reviews to the superb little sushi place. The owner/chef is very entertaining with made our early dinner pleasurable from a distance. The bar seating area was preoccupied by patrons dining so we did nit get the full experience. Either way. It was a great dining experience. I ordered a tempura chicken appetizer with lemon wedges on the side. The combination was terrific. Fresh and tasty! The salmon sushi roll can with avocado, cucumber, and wasabi / fresh ginger too. Great combination!! Filling but not too filling. I would recommend this place to sushi lovers.
Roger is incredible. His passion and love for flavors and his craft come through with every bite. This will be our new go-to sushi spot. Call and get reservations at the counter for omakase! It’s the best. Thank you for such a wonderful experience.
It was such a wonderful and enjoyable experience. Roger and the rest of the staff are incredibly loving and friendly. We could not have asked for a more memorable experience. Thank you so much for making us feel so loved and cared for! Ask for the sushi bar seats - you will not regret it! It is your very own omasake experience, but better because in addition to really good sushi, you get to enjoy Roger's company. Highly recommend the aged tuna, Norwegian mackerel, and Wagyu nigiri! Also, make sure to leave some room for their in-house ice cream and desserts!
Sat at the bar for my wife's bday omakase dinner and Roger, the sushi chef/owner, did not disappoint! Some of the best fish I've ever had, great conversation as well, Roger is very knowledgeable! Some of the major highlights. 2 kinds of uni on soft tofu (Roger prefers it this way and wow it's good), yellowtail nigiri, blue fin tuna a few ways , soft shell crab hand roll and last but not least a5 Japanese wagyu nigiri with shaved foie gras! Had about 15 courses each, came out to about $200 each and that's with a big bottle of sake, tax and tip. Worth every penny!
I’ve been to a fair share of Omakase experiences in SF and Omakase with Chef Roger at Zushi Puzzle blew my mind! The fish was impeccably high quality, mouth-watering, and experience was very personable and educational. I enjoyed fish I had never even heard of - monkfish liver, Korean halibut, aged toro and more. The lampchop lollipops, spider crab handroll and home made wasabi ice-cream were dishes to remember as well! He is so thorough with each guest and I promise you, you will NOT leave hungry! Omakase with Roger will change your mind and shift the baseline of an Omakase experience for you - I promise 😋
ABSOLUTE MUST 🍣 Hands down the best sushi I have ever had in my entire life. Food, service and atmosphere 11/10. I’m truly not exaggerating one bit. Doesn’t look like much on the outside, but make sure you get a spot AT the bar with Chef Roger (sits about 6 people). The fish is so fresh, he will provide three different variations to a fish, coaching you on how to properly eat each dish, with a lesson on what makes it special. Each fish comes from a different part of the world, Scotland, Japan, Korea etc. He puts so much love and care into each dish, he explains that good food comes from the heart, not the mind. He has different sauces and garnishes, and it really changed my perspective on how I have been eating sushi. He has an amazing personality, very funny, you really connect with him, and it feels like a vip experience. We got lucky and got same day reservation but they told me, as well as reviews I saw, you need to call ahead. Wasn’t a cheap meal, but we did not care one bit. For this experience, it was worth every penny. He ended it with a wagyu sashimi with foie gras garnish, and we don’t eat dairy and he gave us sorbet for dessert as alternative. He also starts off asking for allergies and is very accommodating.
I've been to a few dozen Omakase over the years and This place is the best. The food is amazing and delicious. Not to mention, the service is very courteous and friendly. Worth every penny because Roger provides enough food to make sure you are full. I came here 3x in a week because all my friends and family had requested me to bring them to a Sushi Omakase. All 3 times, menu is different. There's no set menu. Roger explains every dish he prepares for us. He's very funny, witty and knowledgeable about sushi culture. Every person I brought here has nothing but positive comments about him. I highly recommend this place.
We picked Zushi Puzzle due to the great reviews particularly about the experience with Roger, the sushi chef. We were not disappointed. We did the sushi bar omakaze experience. Not an inexpensive but a truly unique experience. Roger led us through a culinary adventure of creative, fresh, high quality fish from all over the world! We had a range of Korean halibut, Hokkaido uni, Norway mackerel, New Zealand snapper and so much more! Even dessert was inspired! We had matcha wasabi ice cream, POPCORN ice cream, and lychee pineapple sorbet! Roger introduced us to things we would never think to try (such as delicious monk fish liver, “ocean foie gras”) and taught us how to eat the sushi. It was educational and fun. John was our server and he was kind and gracious. We will definitely return!
I had an amazing sushi experience at this SF restaurant! The sushi bar seating allowed us to interact with Chef Roger, who took us on a delightful journey from the sourcing of the fish to the art of savoring each bite. I was pleasantly surprised by my newfound love for fish varieties that I would typically overlook elsewhere. This can be attributed to the exceptional quality, meticulous preparation, and Chef Roger's expertise. The overall experience was truly worth the price, leaving me thoroughly satisfied.
Probably the most amazing sushi experience I’ve ever had. I’m definitely not a sushi aficionado or expert…but this was an incredible meal and experience. The omakase with Chef Roger was all so delicious - but my highlights were the aged toro sashimi and the wagyu sashimi with foie gras shavings to finish the meal. The salmon roe and soft shell crab handroll to start the meal are also notable mentions, as was the wasabi ice cream for desert. (And I’m not longer an “uni virgin”, according to Chef Roger.) The most expensive meal I’ve had in San Francisco this trip, but I can’t recommend this place enough!
Get a seat at the sushi bar with Chef Roger and let him work his magic. Roger is a character and a half and it’s part of the experience. If you’re a sushi purist and a stickler about what sushi should or shouldn’t be, this may not be the spot for you. But if you’re looking for low-key unpretentious good food and a great time, you can’t go wrong here. Chef Roger isn’t afraid to get a bit quirky with his sushi preparations and it’s part of the fun. Favorite dishes from the 2.5 hour omakase included: - spider crab hand roll - uni nigiri - aged toro nigiri - New Zealand salmon nigiri Also, the wasabi here is a star unto itself. Tab came out to about 170 per person pre-tip, which is not cheap but honestly very reasonable for the amount of food we got and especially compared to many high end omakase places that have popped up in the Bay Area recently.
Came here for dinner on a business trip and had the omakase experience. It was out-of-this-world good. Like other reviews, Chef Roger was so friendly and kind to us. He would teach you how to eat sushi like a professional. He would explain about aged fish. The fish was so fresh, all over the world (Korean Halibut, Japanese scallops, New Zealand salmon, Santa Barbara 888 Uni, Blue fin tuna from Spain, etc). I tasted his wasabi green tea ice cream, popcorn ice cream, wagyu A5 torched beef sushi - so different. I have eaten from a few Michelin restaurants but this was extraordinary. If you come to SF or live here and haven’t tried Zushi Puzzle, you are missing the best sushi/dining meal.

Some of the best sushi you can have. Best hand roll I ever had ever. People complain about the lack of music but honestly I love the quiet and intimate vibe. Something very endearing about this family owned business that I really loved. Came here for valentines and had a great time
We had a great time at the sushi bar with Roger. It was our first time and a special occasion for us, and we couldn’t be happier with our experience. It was the best toro we’ve had and Roger’s hand roll was fantastic. Hopefully will be back soon!

we went in with no reservation and ordered a la carte, not omakase. 16 pcs chef sashimi was 5/5 absolutely standout, a must order. the salesforce roll and miso soup was nothing to write home about, no need to order. staff was very attentive. it's a no-frills spot but i think atmosphere could be improved.
The sushi was exceptional and Chef Roger was amazing. We had no menu so the price was steep when the bill came so be prepared to spend a lot but worth the experience.

I really wanted to like this small, family run place. But there is one problem. The food just isn’t very good. Or, frankly, good at all. The fish could have come from any chain supermarket. Edible, probably just fine if you cooked it. But raw? No. And the way the cut and served it didn’t help. Sauces were blah. Rice was blah. Sorry
I had heard good things about this place, so I was excited to try it. We ordered three appetizers, eight pieces of nigiri, and the chicken udon. We arrived at 5:30 p.m. They open at 5 p.m., and we were the first customers there. The place is definitely more of a hole-in-the-wall and appears to be family-run. I have nothing against hole-in-the-wall restaurants, but the restaurant was empty and extremely quiet. There was no music playing, so it was complete silence until another couple came in. Even then, I’m not a fan of restaurants that don’t play some kind of background music—the silence made the place feel even more lifeless. Onto the food: The grilled sea bass was good. The seaweed cucumber salad was so-so. The mackerel that came with it tasted fishy, which could have been due to it being cured, but I just wasn’t a fan. We also ordered the fried tofu, but it didn’t come out until near the end of our meal. I’m not sure why it took so long, especially since the kitchen wasn’t busy. I enjoyed the scallops and kani (crab). They were sweet, and the scallops had a good texture. The hamachi was my second favorite. Unfortunately, the madai and salmon didn’t taste fresh. The toro was probably the worst piece of toro I’ve ever had—it was extremely fishy in both taste and smell. I’ve never had toro like that before. The unagi also had a slight sour taste. The stir-fried chicken udon was good. I was also confused by the order in which the food came out—it felt very disorganized. To make matters worse, my boyfriend has been experiencing stomach issues since last night’s dinner and is still recovering. Overall, the cooked dishes were pretty good and decent. However, when it comes to the raw items, it may be safer to order more commonly requested dishes, as they’re more likely to be made with fresher fish.

Make sure that you know what this costs before booking. Had I been booking for a special occasion - this would have been an ‘experience’. However, I thought I was booking a reasonably priced sushi restaurant (based on the menu prices online) on a random Thursday night while visiting SF & got completely shocked by a $360 bill for two (not including an expected tip). The other couple that had randomly come in (having literally just gotten off a plane from Europe & looking for quick sushi) had the exact same shock. If cost is not a factor & you want a special experience - I don’t believe you will be disappointed, but if you get encouraged to start trying things and aren’t given a menu be aware that you will get whatever produce needs to be used by the restaurant as an omasake experience and charged the very top market prices.
This restaurant was really bad. We had read good reviews and can only assume new owners. It was nearly empty at 7:30 pm on a Thursday. Sushi was mediocre and portly presented. Slapped together and scattered. The salad, instead of ginger dressing, had bottled ranch dressing.couldn't eat it. The soft shell crab was so overly-salted it was inedible. The tofu was covered in a corn starch sauce. We do not rate many restaurants bad.
I got sick! I made a reservation attempting to get omokase, but was told the counter was booked. We got there early (5pm) reservations and walked into an empty restaurant. We were asked if we had a reservation then seated at a table immediately. We ordered appetizers, a bunch of different nigiri, and an udon dish. The order of the food was a bit strange. About ¾ of the nigiri arrived first, then some of the appetizers, then more appetizers, the rest of the nigiri, then the udon. Some of the fish with the nigiri tasted off, and I'm guessing that's what did it to me. I didn't get a pitcure of the first plate of nigiri. The udon seemed like it was ½ a pack of udon. It was a pretty small serving. It did taste good, though. The tempura was ok - I say this mostly because I found an ant walked on the inside of the black dish. Everything was pretty slow. The whole meal took almost 2 hours. It looks like cooked food came from downstairs, and sushi was cut at the sushi bar. Two other tables for a total of 3 other people got seated while we were there, so I'm not sure why it took so long to get food. Initially, it was really quiet. There are wall mounted speakers, but no music was playing. What did break the silence was a couple who started watching videos on a phone with the volume up really high. About 10 minutes after leaving, I got violently ill. While driving home, I had to stop and find a place to use a restroom. Cleanliness may be a huge, much needed thing here. Because I got sick, I cannot recommend this place at all.
