Opinions de Juanita & Maude Albany
Went there for a birthday dinner. The outside area is setup very well for dining, the staff courteous and considerate. Felt very safe dining out because of their actions. Now onto the food - wow! The fried chicken was very tasty with a great seasoned batter but the steak was cooked amazingly well. Do not miss the churros on the dessert menu and they have a good selection of specialized beers so make sure to try as well.
My first time was just fine, but my second time 1y later has been fantastic especially with the appetizers and the desserts, only disappointed with one item on 10 (jambalaya, a bit tasteless). Nice patio, and good vibes inside. Great service.
Our Daughter and Son-in-law recently moved to the area and this was our first visit from the UK. Found this restaurant by chance. What a find!! Outstanding restaurant. Terrific food and the most wonderful staff. This is a must visit experience.
The menu, beer and wine list, and service are great. The cocktail menu changes often and there's always something tempting on it. Order several starters to share with your friends. The pasta dishes, tagliatelle this evening, are excellent. I had chicken with some of the best spatzle ever. Definitely get dessert with the wine pairings. We had one of each and they were all excellent! We phoned ahead on a Friday evening and they held a table for our group of five. Parking in the bank lot at the corner of Washington Ave. is free and unrestricted.
This is my second time at the restaurant and seem to come every time we have a big celebration. If I lived closer to here, I would definitely be here more often because the menu does change from time to time. Everyone who works here is super kind and we have not had a bad experience at all Take a look at some of the pictures I posted for the latest menu and what we got. The highlight for me was the duck confit and banana flan. Oh I can’t forget the steak and fruits perfectly cooked. The gnocchi with mushrooms was also very memorable. Let’s be real. I pretty much liked everything I ate. Drinks I tried something that was supposed to remind you of nacho cheese. It was interesting for sure. Probably not the drink I would go for, but you do actually get reminders of sitting at a ballpark eating nacho cheese. Try it if you’re feeling adventurous. Def will be back
Easily the best meal I've had at a restaurant in a while. The Tuna Tartare was my favorite item of the night. It had so much flavor within the first bite. The Maude Burger was really good. The Short Rib and Rib plate was ridiculously good. Both meats were cooked perfectly. The sauce on the ribs is pretty spicy, but if you're not into that, I'd have them put it on the side. We also ordered the bread, and that was good too. I really have no complaints with this little gem. I'm definitely putting this place in my husband's budget and we will be visiting soon. The staff that interacted with us was also nice . Reservations is recommended.
Never a bad meal here. Ever. Service is fantastic, ambience is perfect. Just such a slam dunk place for a wonderful meal. Take your mom! Take your spouse! Take anyone and I challenge you to have a bad time. Can’t wait to go back- a sentiment I feel as soon as I walk out the door after every meal.
Absolutely fantastic experience. Our waiter Oliver suggested some of his favorites, including (pictured) the anisette-compressed watermelon and feta salad... and the shiitake & cherry tomato crispy rice appetizers. So good - what an amazing combination of flavors and textures. Go here. Go again!
Delicious meal and I would have recommended everything on the menu. Good portions, decently quick service.
A standout in a part of the country famous for its restaurants. There were unique cocktail creations and a great wine list but the stars were the main courses which had great takes on classic items prepared and seasoned masterfully. It is somewhat noisy, but that's because its filled with happy people enjoying themselves and their companions. Reservations advised.
Top-tier restaurant that I’ve encountered! The presentation was incredible. The service was top-notch. Olivia was outstanding. My husband called to make the reservation last minute and Nicholas was so accommodating. When we arrived, he knew exactly who we were and as we were waiting, he gave us a complementary champagne while our table was being prepared. We started out with tuna carpaccio melted in your mouth, pops a flavor. It was a party in your mouth. But olive oil stood out the course salt the cracked pepper. My husband had the halibut and fingerling potatoes with a nice chowder type gravy. I had the ribeye with a slice of onion type potato wedge with peas, and cauliflower and string beans. Dessert was a lemon meringue, Panna cotta with crumbled oats and coconut and grapefruit and jelly. Sounds like a mouthful, but it was so light after such a filling awesome meal She guided us through everything in the recommendations were spot on.
What a great time we had at your restaurant last night ! The food was simply perfect and delicious and don't get me started on the wine and cocktail selection. Also warm thanks to the staff who were all lovely and big kudos to Michael the som who really went out of his way to meet all of our needs that evening :)
Second time coming here. Great spot with delicious food, unique and tasty cocktails, and top notch service. They are popular, so I would recommend making a reservation. They have bar and indoor/outdoor seating. This time around I got the halibut, and my friend got the rib-eye steak. Both came out perfect. We also got cocktails. Can't remember the names, but one was a carrot/grapefruit tequila drink with a black salt rim and the other a drink with pisco and lemongrass tea. Both were really good. They also have some great dessert and dessert/port wines. Will definitely be back again.
My in-laws invited my wife and I out to dinner. They had a gift certificate for Juanita & Maude. I never heard of the place but was excited to try it after looking at reviews and the menu. It was so good! The server was awesome and was helpful when we had questions. I got the pollo saltado. Tender chicken with amazing flavors! It came with some thick potato wedges in this amazing sauce. To drink I had the Remus which was amazing. For appetizers we had the beets and fried fish balls. For desert, we had the chocolate cake and camomile flavored dish. We had so much fun. I look forward to recommending the place to my friends.
I recently visited Juanita and Maude in Albany, and it’s safe to say this restaurant exemplifies the perfect blend of innovative cooking, genuine hospitality, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Each course showcased a harmonious balance of flavors and textures from start to finish—highlighted by some genuinely eye-opening techniques, like their Koji rice dry aging for steak. Ambiance You sense a relaxed yet refined energy when you walk through the doors. The space strikes a perfect balance between stylish and comfortable: think polished concrete or metal-topped tables, soft lighting, and a thoughtfully designed open layout that gives you a glimpse into the bustling kitchen. It’s upscale enough for a special occasion yet unpretentious enough for a casual evening out. Warm, genuine service rounds out the experience, making you feel cared for and at ease. Cocktail & Wine Program Before diving into the food, I tried their signature Puckett cocktail—a delightful concoction of black tea gin, nigiri sake, cardamom, yuzu, hibiscus, and a luxurious cherry egg foam on top. It was refreshingly bright yet intriguingly complex, with layers of subtle sweetness and aromatic spice. This was the only cocktail I had time for on this visit, but it made me eager to return and explore their unique drink list further. The staff demonstrated remarkable knowledge on the wine side, quickly guiding me toward varietals that complemented the dishes without overshadowing their distinctive flavors. Starters & Main Course The meal began with the Garam Masala-Spiced Tuna Crudo, which arrived as a visually stunning plate layered with tomato, cucumber, crispy rice, and shallots. The warming garam masala contrasted beautifully with the incredible fresh tuna. Drizzles of cardamom yogurt and bright chutneys completed the dish—tangy, creamy, and subtly sweet. I had the Seared Ribeye Steak & Baked Potato for the main event, and the Koji rice dry aging process was a game-changer. Not only did the ribeye boast a buttery tenderness, but it also had a deeper, more savory flavor that set it apart from your typical steak. Served alongside a loaded baked potato topped with creamy Brussels sprouts (infused with a subtle clam liquor), each bite was elevated further by the trio of accompaniments—steak sauce, horseradish, and grain mustard. Dessert Dessert was a showstopper: Spiced Chocolate Cake & Mousse. The dish balanced its indulgent richness with unexpected elements—sesame, pumpkin seeds, and a bright pineapple component that added a sweet-tart burst. The chili-spiked ice cream was just spicy enough to keep the chocolate from feeling heavy, making every spoonful a study in contrasts that still felt cohesive. Overall Impression In short, Juanita and Maude masterfully merge global inspiration, top-tier technique, and genuine warmth. Their cocktails (like the Puckett) are as inventive as their food, and the staff’s thoughtful wine recommendations underscore just how committed they are to crafting a well-rounded dining experience. Whether you’re drawn in by the Koji-aged steak, the perfectly balanced desserts, or the chance to explore more of their eclectic cocktail list, this gem in Albany is well worth many repeat visits. It’s a space that feels intimate and energizing—perfect for everything from a solo treat at the bar to a celebratory evening with friends.

This has to be one of the BEST restaurants I've ever enjoyed in all three categories. The food presentation is a work of art as well as the fantastic flavors of each of the dishes. This should be one's bucket list.

I had dinner here for the first time a few days ago. It was my friend’s birthday celebration. We sat in a beautiful room in the back, with heat lamps. The service and food were impeccable!
Great dining experience. Creative and adventurous menu. The service is excellent. Classy but not stuffy. Wine, drink, two appetizers and two entrees plus tip was $200

### Updated Review ### Our recent visit to Juanita & Maude, a restaurant we've previously enjoyed, left us with mixed feelings. Nestled on San Pablo Avenue, it has been a reliable spot for special occasions, but this time, the experience didn't quite align with our expectations, particularly given the pricing. We started with the sweet corn & cheddar soup and the heirloom tomato tartine. Both dishes were good and well-executed, but they didn’t offer anything particularly noteworthy or different from what we've had before. On the other hand, my companion absolutely loved the ahi tuna carpaccio, praising its freshness and the balance of flavors. For the main courses, I opted for the seared filet mignon & smoky beluga lentils, while my companions chose the grilled hamachi & cold noodles and the b'stilla pastry of spring lamb & sweet cherry. The filet mignon was cooked to my liking, and the lentils were fine, but the dish overall felt quite standard. My companions expressed similar thoughts about their meals—tasty and well-prepared, but without any particularly remarkable features. Given the cost, we felt that the dining experience fell short of what we had previously enjoyed here. Unfortunately, upon returning home, I immediately became ill, and the symptoms started during the drive. It was clear that one of my dishes was the cause, as I was the only one affected and none of us had shared our meals. This incident left me sick for two days and has understandably shaken my confidence in the restaurant. In summary, while Juanita & Maude has been a favorite of ours in the past, this recent visit was a disappointment. The food was good, but it no longer delivered the distinctiveness that once set this place apart. Coupled with the unfortunate illness I experienced afterward, I find it difficult to recommend the restaurant as enthusiastically as before. I hope this was an isolated issue, but it has certainly made us reconsider.
We were super excited to celebrate our anniversary there, but unfortunately things didn't go as planned. The menu was interesting, the drinks were great, the staff was warm & friendly but... a strong dog-urine odor ruined the evening. We were seated in the left corner of the patio, and the pee smell was persistent. When we walked out we saw an old trailer on the other side of the wall and the owner probably let their dog pee on/inside the restaurant's wooden wall. Definitely not an enjoyable experience on an anniversary night, especially after spending close to $250 for two. We told our server, so hopefully they'll address it for future guests but we won’t be back :-(

Over-rated. This place, its food tries too hard. More complex than flavorful. Our party of 6-found the food overall underwhelming. The menu features chic-chic buzz word food terms meant to impress but doesn’t. Our waiter was the same. Vague, intellectual answers to simple down-to-earth menu questions. All of us were turned off by the snobbery of our server. Our group has travelled the world extensively and none of us were impressed by the quality of pretentious and disappointing, over-priced and under-prepared dishes and services. Want to pretend you’re in a gourmet place - this is your place!! If not there are way better, way tastier and way friendly places to enjoy.
