Opinions de Smith's Public House Albany
Excellent meal at the tavern. Started with chicken wings, medium hot, and they were crispy and the blue cheese dip was great. The espresso martini (with Baileys) was desert worthy. Then the two entrees, short rip melt and boar ragu. Both excellent, with the ragu as good as the best bolognese I've had (they are different, yes, but cousins). Beautiful fireplace setting with tin ceiling. Service was attentive. Will come back.
I really like Smith's the only issue trying to get a table, you can't call to make reservations, or see if it's crowded, for me it's 30 plus minute drive. If there was a way to see if we will be able to get a table. Have been there twice and had to go somewhere else, and kinda confused some of the people working there,
A friend and I stopped in after leaving a nearby candlelight event, and we’re so glad we did. I had the NY strip steak, and she ordered the bourbon salmon with an upgrade to the crispy Brussels sprouts—everything was absolutely delicious. Our server, Jeff, was attentive without being overbearing, which made the experience even better. I’ll definitely be coming back!
I've been to the Smith House several times and enjoy the restaurant more after each visit. It's a warm environment, the staff is amazing and most importantly the food is excellent. Never disappointed with my visits.
Been here a few times.. The people there are very chill. I've never ran into problems down there. The food is good. There's a separate dining area from the main bar. It's an awesome place that I would definitely recommend stopping by.
We visited Smith’s Public House in Cohoes on Friday evening for a relaxing dinner date, and the experience was exceptional from start to finish. The establishment offers a truly impressive atmosphere — warm, refined, and remarkably authentic. The period-correct design elements, including the beautifully preserved tin ceilings and detailed woodwork, create a setting that feels both historic and inviting. One of the most notable features is the expansive fireplace and adjoining lounge area. This space provides an elegant yet comfortable environment, adding a sense of intimacy and charm that enhances the overall dining experience. The food was outstanding. Each dish was thoughtfully crafted, full of flavor, and presented with care. The drink selection was equally impressive, with well-prepared cocktails and generous pours that demonstrated clear attention to quality. Service was exemplary: attentive, professional, and genuinely welcoming without ever feeling intrusive. The evening’s entertainment complemented the ambiance perfectly, contributing to an enjoyable and well-rounded experience without overwhelming conversation or comfort. For those seeking excellent cuisine, high-quality beverages, and impeccable service in a setting rich with historic character, Smith’s Public House is a standout destination. It is a true asset to Cohoes, and we look forward to returning.
2 weeks ago, I called to make a lunch reservation for approximately 20 people -I spoke to Kayla who was helpful and said no problem. Today a group of us enjoyed a wonderful lunch and get together. Our waiter was great, he checked on us frequently, and everyone enjoyed their food and beverages. Thank you very much. Cohoes High class of 1973.
This place was top notch. My husband and I were in town for a wedding and had dinner on our final night. Cocktails 10/10 great menu… ambiance?! 10/10 it was like we were transported back in time, amazing vibe….Dinner!!! So good. First off, the kale salad is a must, we shared it as an appetizer and it was fantastic. My husband got the Tuscan chicken pasta and I got the spindle chicken dish, both ahmmaazing. Couldn’t recommend this place more, well done! Hats off
Our group of 7 friends/former coworkers were very impressed with our lunch experience. The history of the building, the enormous bar, the architecture and general welcoming atmosphere were noted as soon as we entered. The menu was varied, there was something for everyone's taste and the food itself was delicious! Our server was pleasant and accommodating. We had no complaints and nothing but compliments for the staff at Smith's. We'll be back again, for sure!
So today I stoped by Smiths Public House in Cohoes. Shout out to whoever suggested this place! These Mozerella sticks were so good. Perfectly crispy texture, they were maybe fried a little too hard, but nothing to complain about. beautifully seasoned and a really nice cheese pull. Score Taste: 9/10 Texture: 9//10 Cheese pull: 9/10 Total 27/30 All in all really good. Melba sauce was awesome
I went up to Cohoes music Hall last night. We're looking for a place to eat so we wind up at Smith's public House. What a wonderful place to go with friends. Food was great. The service was awesome and The beer was good. Little warm but it was okay. That was my first time ever being there. If you're in the Cohoes area you should stop by. I'm pretty sure that you enjoy yourself. Definitely will go back again
I'm so happy this place was reopened! The Bartenders were so awesome! I love the vibe of the entire place, the historic building is so cool. Everything was great - they had espresso martinis on tap and they tasted perfect. The mozzarella logs appetizer were amazinggg and the french onion soup, burger and pizzas were great too. Definitely recommend!
Every dish was put together and executed exceptionally well! From a simple yet elegant charchuterie board to the wild boar ragu, to the best French onion soup that I have ever had in my life, and some very unique yet phenomenal desserts, the entire menu is priced right and absolutely out of this world. Our server Jordan was friendly and attentive, and the head chef himself Ben came out to thank us for our patronage and to ensure our satisfaction with the dishes. Will definitely be returning here, and I highly recommend Smith’s to anyone looking for a wonderful atmosphere in which to enjoy an even better meal!
Nostalgic atmosphere, great cocktails (love the gin cocktails) and decent food. Really wish they had fall/winter brunch but I understand it didn't do well in the late spring/summer when people want to be outside. There's a dart board and events lime dueling pianos which is fun. If you can grab a seat by the fireplace with some friends or make new ones; highly recommend.Definitely check it out.
The place felt like you were stepping back in time (in a good sense) Service was warm but spread a little thin. My meatball sandwich was thin on the meatballs which were dry. The hot chick was good and arugula salad had lots of meat
Very beautiful restaurant. It's dark, with paneled wood lining the walls, a fireplace, leather couches and chairs complete the look. A very Long Bar greets you as you enter. You can feel the history. Friendly if not quite attentive staff. Food was truly meh. Here's what we had... 5 Mrs. T pierogies, some crispy, some limp with a tasty sour cream and chive sauce for $14. The pierogies were served with a pool of oil, I think, at the bottom of the dish. Cremini Fettuccine, $19, housemade fettuccine with cremini mushrooms, cream sauce and parmesan. Nicely cooked pasta, but it was served with a GARLIC cream sauce, with garlic overpowering all other flavors. Also in the cream sauce, we found a stick of thyme. I don't have a problem with thyme, I cook with it often, but take the leaves off the stem before serving. That inedible stem should have never left the kitchen. Short Rib Melt, $22, Braised short rib, caramelized onions, Italian long hots, provolone, aj jus served on a seeded hero roll. The bread was good, but the rest had no flavor. When I ordered the sandwich, which I didn't realize until just now is one of the most expensive things on the menu, the waitress asked me if I liked spicy food. I told her I did, and she said I made a good choice. When the sandwich arrived on a hero roll, I was surprised. To me a "melt" is traditionally closer to a panini, not a hero from the local pizza place. I took a bite and was greatly disappointed in the lack of flavor and heat. I also wondered where the aus was. I ate half of it before the waitress returned to check on us. I asked her about our conversation about the heat and she responded with "Did they leave the hots off? They do that a lot." She stepped away and return with about 4 slices of jalapeño, not Italian long hot peppers, and apologized for the kitchen's negligence. She then said, "I hope that makes it better." It didn't.
Decided to try from seeing the reviews from Dom on tic tock . We had to seat ourselves as the hostess after waiting for a few minutes a regular said go find a seat and I will let the waitress or host know you are here . I ordered the chicken vodka sandwich as it sounded great and was one of the recommended items from the review we saw posted. The sandwich fell apart as you were trying to eat it and the roll wasn't toasted. They used sliced mozzarella that wasn't melted to well . The only vodka sauce on the sandwich was drizzled on to of the cheese which made the sandwich dry . So disappointed as this could be a great sandwich if made differently. My wife had the steak sandwich said it was good. The service was not good as it appeared the bartender was trying to run the bar and serve and take orders in the seating area. We got there at 1 :30 and didn't leave until 3:40 and had to ask for the check. Poor planing by not having a waitress for the seating area. Nobody could handle both areas as the bar got crazy busy which neglected the dinning area which only had about 5 tables. Cool place and bar but the food and service was a miss . One other note they kept opening the door in the restaurant to go outside which made it cold in the restaurant.
Bar drinks were great as was the bar service . The strip steak came pre sliced and $43 it was definitely not a strip. Short rib melt was likely prepackaged judging from the amount of salt. Nice place but food and table service could use some help!
Beautiful Ambiance, Disappointing Bites at Smith's Public House We were really looking forward to trying Smith's Public House after seeing so many great reviews. And honestly, the atmosphere when we walked in was lovely – it's a really nice space. Plus, the staff were fantastic! Our server was super friendly and attentive, which we really appreciated. Unfortunately, the food just didn't live up to the positive buzz. We started with the pierogies, and while they were nice and crispy with a good little sauce, they just had absolutely no flavor. It was a bit of a letdown. For my main course, I ordered "The Encore" sandwich, which sounded delicious on paper. But when it arrived, it was so dry and surprisingly bland. I actually had to ask for extra sauce just to get some moisture and a bit of flavor into it. It helped a little, but it still wasn't very good. The chicken cutlet inside was soggy and didn't taste of much at all, maybe just a tiny bit of garlic. And they were so stingy with the pickled onions that I only got one bite with that nice vinegary tang I was hoping for. Overall, it was just really disappointing. My companion ordered the vodka sauce and chicken cutlet pizza. Sadly, the bottom was completely burnt. And the pizza itself had a really odd flavor to it that was hard to place. The vodka sauce was barely there – just these tiny little dots that you couldn't even really taste. She said the whole pizza should have been made with the vodka sauce to give it some flavor. She really wanted to like it, but honestly, she left with a bad taste in her mouth, literally. Despite our disappointment with the food, we both really loved the friendly staff and the genuinely nice atmosphere at Smith's Public House in Cohoes, New York. We would honestly like to give it another try sometime, hoping our experience with the food was just an off night. But right now, it's hard to shake that initial letdown.
I was passing through town and decided to order a Buffalo chicken pizza that was highly recommended. I was told 20 minutes for pick up. I waited an additional 10 minutes for my pizza; I had no problem with that. The problem is the pizza is burnt to a crisp and it’s not even hot. Huge disappointment; I’d be embarrassed.
I really wanted to like The Smith’s Public House, but our experience was disappointing from start to finish. I ordered the chicken sandwich and was shocked to find mold on the bun. The staff replaced it, but the new sandwich came out missing the garlic aioli — and to make matters worse, the lettuce inside the sandwich was also rotting. My girlfriend’s salad wasn’t any better — it had browning, wilted, rotting lettuce mixed throughout. At that point, it was clear that food freshness and quality control are not being taken seriously here. The atmosphere was decent , but the kitchen clearly has some serious issues. It’s hard to recommend a place where basic food safety seems to be an afterthought
