Opinions de The Olde English Pub and Pantry Albany
Delicious restaurant with very friendly staff. The atmosphere here is the best part of your visit, though. The restaurant is quaint and cozy, perfect British pub vibes.
Wonderful food, drinks and atmosphere. Really feels like you are in a London pub. I'm partial to the fish & chips but the vegan wing appetizers are wonderful. Great drink selection including NA selection. Right across the street from the Palace if you are going to a show.
Olde English Pub in Albany is a true gem. We tried the onion soup, the chili, and the fish and chips — and every bite was fantastic. The food was the clear highlight, full of rich, comforting flavors and perfect for a cozy meal. The fish and chips were crispy and golden, the soup was deeply savory, and the chili had just the right kick. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the ambiance felt authentically British — warm, relaxed, and full of charm. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town. Five stars all the way.
Cool building, warm and cozy inside. Excellent cocktails, friendly staff, and the food was on point. We were in town for a show at the palace, staying at the hyatt and this was the perfect location for us as well. Thanks so much!
We were celebrating a birthday and the staff was so nice as to not charge the birthday person’s beer. Besides that, great English decor vibe, food and drink selection. They are a two-story building and once you pass the bar section, you just wait till a server seats you. Fish and chips were so great with that English paper it’s served on. We also tried their fries with assorted dipping sauces, it was decent in portion and taste. Lastly, we tried their Kedgeree from the entrees. It was a huge portion with amazing flavors. Overall, it was a great bar with great food, staff and vibes.
Last night we stopped into The Olde English Pub on Broadway in Albany before we went to the Steve Martin/Martin Short Show at The Palace. We parked in the back lot for a mere $7. The pub staff could not have been more welcoming and accommodating 👍. They had an enticing pub menu. I had a classic reuben with shoestring fries. Hubby had a spicy tomato soup and a salad with very tender slices of chicken on top. For dessert, we shared a decadent slice of dark chocolate cake and coffee. They sat us in front of the fireplace (best seat in the house, we think). The Olde English Pub is our "go to" place before a show at The Palace. They don't take reservations, so get there early, relax, and enjoy!
Food was delicious, their fish and chips were some of the best I've had. The atmosphere was very cozy and homely, it felt like a place I could sit with friends and talk for hours. The service was fantastic, and our waitress was very nice and attentive. Definitely coming back here sometime soon! :)
Came here for the first time as a table of 5 and we were seated immediately. Candice was a phenomenal server and very attentive. We ordered the garlic parmesan wings and crispy brussel sprouts for our appetizers, so delicious! The broccoli cheddar soup and French onion soup are both homemade and the broccoli cheddar was hands down the best I’ve had in a very long time. All of our entrées were delicious as well (loved my corned beef reuben) and really enjoyed the mocktail peach mule. Will definitely go back again!
The old English pub in downtown Albany is a favorite place for me to stop before seeing a show. I always feel like I just walked into a London pub when I come here. The beer selection is fantastic, offering hard to find English favorites such as Old Speckled Hen and Fullers ESB. The bartender and wait staff were attentive. The food on its small menu is classically English and the decor is charming. Highly recommended.
The atmosphere is pure English pub right down to the low ceilings. Winston scowling down from above the fireplace. I had delicious fish and chips with malt vinegar. The waitress was possibly the most attentive I've ever had . Not overly intrusive but obviously observant of her tables and ready to fulfill any requests in a timely fashion and with a genuine and friendly smile. I ordered a sausage roll for later (pictured) the flaky pastry was sublime and the sausage just the right flavors that I remembered from my childhood cookery classes in my secondary modern 3rd year. A wonderful experience. Will definitely be back again. Maybe try the Kedgeree next
Absolutely amazing! My boyfriend and I stopped in for a quick lunch and drinks this afternoon on our way home from Albany. This place feels as if you are walking straight into a neighborhood pub in England. The deco was spendid, the signs were the perfect blend of humor and "pay attention stupid", and service was friendly and prompt and the food and drinks were delicious. I had a proper shepherd's pie, and he had a wonderful pub salad. He was especially pleased with the beer selection, and my "bees knees" gin cocktail was one of the best I've ever had. BONUS: This place is within walking distance of the Palace Theater and easy parking. We will definitely be returning!
We absolutely loved this place! We’re very new to Albany, so it was surprising that it was so close to the highway. But once you’re in there you forget all about the highway. The food was delicious: we got the chicken ceaser wrap and the fish and chips. Coleslaw that came with the fish and chips was the best I’ve had in a while. The staff was super super nice! Definitely would recommend to anyone wanting to experience a cozy little pub :)
Anniversary lunch at The Olde English Pub Have been wanting to try it for a while and watching the snow falling out our window made it seem like a perfect time. It was a little different when headed south and the snow turned to a drizzle and vanished completely from the landscape. Still, there was quite the wind whipping up Broadway so it was good to be somewhere warm. The bar area was so beautifully decorated for the season (though I had to duck my head to avoid the ornaments) and the small dining area on the first floor with Christmas tree, fireplace and jolly Winston Churchill looking down on us was immediately cozy. The sausage roll we had to start was so delicious. The sausage very flavorful and the pastry was flaky perfection. I had the pot pie of the day which was chicken and again there was a fantastic flaky crust over the rich, creamy chicken and veggies. For dessert we had a slice of their carrot cake. It's not made in-house but was still excellent, the cream cheese frosting was thick and rich. Loved the food, the atmosphere and the history of the place. Will definitely be returning.
Loved this place. Great pub food. I had the French Onion Soup - which was very good, and Waldorf Salad, which was fresh and delicious. My friend had their fish and chips, she said it was super fresh - not fishy-tasting. Wine was nice, though they didn't have the one I wanted. We ate outside and the weather was perfect. I'd love to go back at night, see about music and dinner menu. Very enjoyable staff, helpful and attentive, though not overly so.
If you are staying at the Hyatt Place or looking for somewhere to eat/drink/hang before a show at the Palace, The Olde English Pub & Pantry is the place to be. Although the method for seating guests is a bit awkward, (enter the front of the restaurant, see bartender, then exit the way you came in and walk around back to meet someone who comes out a kitchen door,) the pub food was EXCELLENT! Since I couldn’t decide what to order, I had a bit of everything. The French onion soup was flavorful and cheesy with extra bread on the side. Order the hand meat pies, Sweeney Todd can’t compete! But the best food item that I had was the classic fish & chips. This was perhaps the best fish for this style dish I’ve ever had, and I’ve been to London several times. The fried batter was flaky and tasty while the white fish was soft and juicy. What a delight! Well done! Oh, and the bartender makes awesome cocktails.Tip her well!
For a hearty lunch, we ventured to the Olde English Pub and Pantry, a charming pub nestled within a historic Albany building. The inviting atmosphere, complete with exposed brick walls and warm lighting, created the perfect setting for a leisurely meal. Both the chicken pot pie and shepherd's pie were absolute winners, providing warmth and comfort on a chilly day.
So I had this waiter tonight and yes, he brought his drinks. Yes, he brought us our food. Yes, he took away the plates. Nothing else nothing exceptional and complained that I didn’t tip them enough literally out loud so the entire restaurant could hear him. I was mortified. That happened to be the only amount that I had left to spend for the day on my per diem for work.
Tables that were sat after us were waited on and served first, we were told they had a limited event menu due to an event outside. Ordered one of their 2 available entrees for $27 not only was the presentation was terrible but the steak was overcooked, sour and definitely expired. They also charge you extra for a side of mayo for your burger 😂
Atrocious meal!! I’m embarrassed to say we drove 2.5hrs to eat here. They served our chicken tenders raw in the middle! The fish and chips were terrible. I was expecting them to look like the beer battered photos in the other reviews. Apparently they changed owners recently and along with that a lot of the recipes. The batter was like tasteless cardboard. We all felts sick afterwards. Save yourself the trip and don’t bother eating there until they get their act together! Instead of comping one of the meals they offered a free carrot cake. Not much compensation for an awful experience. The waitress was nice so we still tipped even though the establishment didn’t deserve it.
