Opinions de Famous Sichuan Albee Square
I came to Famous Sichuan restaurant with a large group and we ordered family-style. The staff was very accommodating and made sure everyone was happy with the dishes we ordered. The cold sesame noodles and spicy boiled beef were both delicious.
Don’t believe the negative reviews. As someone who finds myself very critical of pretty much everything, this place was a pleasant surprise. Our typical hot pot spot was overly crowded so we made a decision to go here. Food we thought was good, portions were nice size, and we basically stuffed ourselves for just over $100, an easy feat here in nyc for a dinner for 2. People just want to complain.
Great Fish Filets w.Garlic Sauce, not crowded very reasonable pricing. I ordered this place once with my friend and I am hooked since then. I loved the fantastic mood and flavorful dishes and drinks. Keep up the good work.
If you like sichuan, you'll love these dishes! I had the braised fish in chili sauce and the dry shredded potatoes and peppers. They were perfectly spicy, the chili sauce was to die for, the fish was so soft and yummy. Other places have the long red peppers and they've tasted like air, simply a texture, but the ones that came with the potatoes were pretty fucking hot 👅 peppers aren't my specialty so I have no explanation. The sides of rice are well priced. Service was great; everyone was very kind and warm. I'd eat here every day of the winter if I lived closer. My only complaint would be that the "tea" tasted like hot dishwater. The food is good enough to overlook this.
Delicious Hot Pot. Vegetarian broth is very spicy. I love spicy, but asked it to be a little more mild which was perfect. Watch out for those Sichuan peppers! We added cabbage, sprouts, Chinese greens with garlic dipping sauce. This is my second time there and we were a group of three. It does not work that well for one because there is too much leftover food. Too bad my companions don't like mushrooms! I will return.
Went this past Sunday. Our waiter was super accommodating to our party of 12, service was quick. Didn't get to try everything my family ordered, but everyone enjoyed their food! I loved my pan-fried noodles with beef! Based on some of the other reviews, it seems a lot of dishes are hit or miss. Totally understandable-- they have a huge menu! I'm glad we stumbled into this place. It hit just the spot :)
We must have ordered enough to kill a small village. We literally ate everything on the menu well not really but almost. Would highly recommend the crispy dry chicken it is so so good. The human lamb is amazing as well the fried dumplings next level. Make sure to get some hot oil on the side. And don't forget to get some beer to wash down all your food. So delicious
The chef explained the delicious eggplant without fish, and the Sichuan pepper ice cream, which tastes like electric strawberries, was a surprise.
Excellent food!!! And this is coming from someone who grew up eating delicious home cooked Chinese food. The sliced beef with peppers (C23) and Chinese veggies with garlic sauce were both amazing. The beef in particular had a really nice flavor where you could taste the ingredients but they didn’t overpower the natural flavor of the meat at all. And the beef was also the perfect tenderness with just a tiny bit of crispy edges here and there. Definitely recommend this spot, the vibe was also chill and it wasn’t too crowded even on a Saturday night. The only thing I’d say would have improved the meal is if they had some music playing! 😁
We stop by and had a good experience. We had beef and broccoli, shredded beef with pepper and bean curd and chicken low mein. The food was delicious, the shredded beef was great.
I had an amazing experience at this Chinese restaurant. The food was simply outstanding. The flavors were rich and authentic, transporting me straight to the heart of China. The Peking Roast Duck was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the spicy Sichuan dishes had just the right amount of heat. The service was excellent - the staff was friendly, attentive, and efficient. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting. I will definitely be coming back for more!
The food here was excellent -- the Chengdu Spicy Fried Tofu was crispy, well spiced, and so easy to scarf down. It was pretty empty on a Monday evening, which was exactly the low-key ambiance I was searching for.
Loved this place! My two gripes were that I noticed the water was already "made" upon entry - just a few ice cubes were added and then brought to us (and I watched them melt in less than a minute), and the menu is SOOOO extensive.. literally over 150 items/preparations to choose from. Picking an entree felt like taking a standardized test with no prep. But the food was AMAZING! Our table had cold noodles, orange chicken, pork fried rice and double cooked pork. 10/10 would recommend.
We were early for the dinner crowd, so it was pretty quiet, but great food! The twice cooked pork and the glass noodles with ground pork were delicious! They had heat to them, but it wasn't the kind that peels your mouth's inside. Very flavorful. Next time I'm in NYC, I will go back.
Excellent food. Chongqing chicken is great, ask for extra peppers though, they will make it mzungu style if you don't! Chili pork dumplings were also great, and their chili oil is very good. Food is fast, the lady is friendly enough, venue is comfortable. No frills, just tasty.
Fast service and such good food! We got beef noodle soup, their pork dumplings, Sichuan spicy cucumbers, and the stir stir fried spicy beef. Everything was amazing. The dumplings melt in your mouth, the beef had a nice crunch and crispiness to it, the beef noodle soup was amazing. Love this place!
Our favorite hole in the wall !! We can't get into the city and not stop by here!! We stumbled upon Famous Sichuan very randomly one day while walking around. We ll be going back all the time!! The food is soooop good that when you have finished your dish you will drink the rest of it!! Can't wait to go back ...slurp ...
The food was absolutely amazing!! The broiled whole fish in chili sauce was delicious. The spicy stir fry in the hot pot was also very good. And the service was great the people working there were very kind. I would recommend everyone come to this restaurant soon! Very good Szechuan food.
Pretty dead at lunch on a Thursday, maybe because it was late, post-1pm lunch. But the lack of any wait is convenient. Lunch specials on the back of the menu for about $8-9. The usual options, chicken and beef deep fried or with peppers or broccoli or whatever. It comes with white rice and a soup. The hot and sour was completely clogged with stringy white mushrooms, so if that sounds delicious to you then check it out. It wasn’t my thing, but the rest of the soup was fine, decent flavor although a bit bland. My colleague had the general tso’s and I tried it. It had some seasoning that was interesting and good, although it could just be well reused frying oil as my colleague pointed out. The chicken with broccoli was okay, the sauce was very salty. The service was okay, definitely not rushed. I note hat my colleague paid the bill so I didn’t see it and can’t opine on the payment process.
Wow! It reminded me a little of the Dr. Who police box, tiny and unassuming on the outside and opens to wonders. This place looks like an old barely surviving restaurant from the outside, and opens into a newly updated beautiful interior. There's sometimes only one person handling those seated inside... and with plenty of packing for pick up and delivery... she's often really busy. But always with a smile, and a help. Right off the bat we were offered a free bowl of soup. I had the hot and sour, and it was spicy, but not killer spicy... just right. Everyone got different main courses, and no one was disappointed. The fried dumplings were slightly more popular in our party than the steamed ones. The main dishes (I had the tripe) were all cooked just right and had a kick... but NOT a boot to the face. No room for dessert, so I can't report on that. The portions were all generous.
I appreciate that this place is open late. However, I was surprised to pay $12.95 before tax for just six dumplings (while paying cash). After tip, I spent $17.
The owner was very kind and brought us our food, which was delicious. The room had some boxes, with supplies lying around. Not a messy atmosphere, but not super nice.
Seriously great meals. We ordered the salt and pepper spare ribs which were delicious and the spicy noodle soup. Green tea ice cream capped our meal. Staff is courteous. Quiet and friendly atmosphere. No need to get frustrated waiting in line for "Joe's" across the street when you can have equally good food here!
A little pricey and out of the way, but overall really nice! We visited my sister who graduated from culinary school recently, and she was raving about this place. The food was really good! The only critique I had was that it felt just a tad cramped, but I am claustrophobic so I wouldn't take that too seriously. Just personal preference.
"After the 4th of July fireworks, it was late, and most Chinatown establishments were closed. Finding Famous Sichuan restaurant open was a relief! The late-night availability is a significant advantage, especially during holidays when options are limited. The food was delicious; everything ordered was enjoyable. However, the service was not pleasant. There was a long wait to be seated, and it took nearly half hour for someone to take the order. While the food and convenience were great, the slow service negatively impacted the overall experience."
The food is great - the order is quick. Second time going there with my husband. First visit ordered soup - was massive. And also ordered fried rice and the broiled beef. In the pictures below are The pork dumplings which are great - can tell they are freshly/home made. Lots of flavor. The broiled beef is also soooo good. We asked for spicy but it wasn’t very spicy. I think they were afraid to make it too spicy for my husband (😆) but he can handle spice better than me. I would totally recommend going there and trying the broiled beef and dumplings!
Well the food is alright; tried their orange chicken which has a pretty good flavor. What I’m worried about is how fresh the chicken is. Has a weird texture to it, and the meat also looked different. So I’m not entirely confident how fresh their food is. Soup came free, but I did not try it as it came with mushrooms which I hate. Surprisingly, I was the only one in the restaurant, and still took them about 20 mins just to take the order. The place being completely empty is a red flag. The lady was casually talking to some people while I sat at the next table for 20 mins for her to take the order. Extremely poor service.
They charged $16+ for a order of spicy beef noodles. That's almost double what it cost. The beef is not as fatty as before. The soup base is not as good as before but still the best in the area. Sadly, I cannot order from here again due to the outrageous pricing. To be fair, if you have money to blow and are looking for really good spicy beef noodle this is the place.
It's a spacious restaurant with a nice decor and environment. On a Friday-Sunday night, it's almost double the price of Mon-Thu lunch special. For spicy lovers, as long as you're judging it against other neighboring restaurant foods, it's not too bad, but I certainly won't be going back to eat by myself. I ordered the Big Fish in spicy soup (super oily), Veggies with Beef, Pig Fat (Tough n Chewy). Seasoning was slightly heavy though acceptable for most. But very good service as the waitress was incredibly patient. Another plus is that they don't sell alcohol so if you have a group, you can bring your own booze. What threw me off is the soup base for hotpot costing $10-$15 though they promised me Mon-Thu is 1/2 price. 3 Stars for the benefit of the doubt and the meal was not all that pricey.
Appreciate the huge variety of the menu but a bit pricey for Chinatown. My order of steamed fish came out to $50 after tip Helpful staff answered any qs I had Cozy ambient lighting
Food was okay, service was suboptimal. The service woman was nice but a bit confused and we waited a long time for the rice and only got it after asking (it was included in the menu) - you'll probably find a better place!
I would like to give these guys more starts but I can't. Ordered pork dumplings (they are not just pork they have cray fish in them) but nothing is written on the menu. I don't eat sea food so this was a shock and really didn't sit well. Called up and they said they would exchange them, so customer service is great! (Though the delivery guy wanted another tip 🤷♂️ guess they where changing an item. Not sure how I feel about this) The noodles where tasty, but the crispy shredded beef was such a let down. It was way too salty and no sauce. Maybe the no sauce is by design but it's different to what I was expecting and still did not taste good so unfortunately it was a total bust. Especially as the area is inundated with so many great places to eat. Oh and it's totally over priced for what you get though the portions are pretty decent. Those 3 dishes plus tip was over $50.
If the tea cost 4dollars you should let us know before you serve, we thought that's free or we can choose water, poor quality of food,if you have 40 dollars budget for each person just go to others I really mean it. First and last time.
Google has a picture of delicious looking beef noodle soup that was posted under 'Chowbus". So based on that, and the boss recommending the beef noodle soup, ordered that. It was rather disappointing, no relation to the photo that had been posted, which the boss said is not a picture of their food. So the first important note to patrons is don't look at the pics posted because many to most of them are from Chow Bus, which apparently are random general pics, not pics of this restaurant's food. Now my review of THIS restaurant's beef noodle soup: Lackluster. Slightly below average. Beef was lean, dry, somewhat tough muchly thin slices (not braised beef with soft chewy tendon). Soup base was spicy (good) but thin and kind of on the watery side compared to others with thicker bases. Noodles were very soft and over-cooked - no they the way I like in beef noodle soup. It wasn't horrible, but for over $20 before tip, this beef noodle soup wasn't worth it and no reason for me to return. :(
Mapo tofu tasted good but it was not mala at all, was not what I wanted. Service is fine but they basically hide tip into your bill which is ???. Also the prices here are ridiculous for Chinese. Don't recommend
Highly inflated prices for sub par Sichuan. Steamed dumplings arrived cold. We should have known as when we entered the restaurant at 5:30 we were the only ones and when we left at 6:30 we were still the only ones!
Last time when we eat in here food is quite good. Though we got a little extra unwanted entertainment, which is we can hear people arguing very loudly from the kitchen. But yesterday we just order delivery from them, it was not the greatest experience. We order 4 items through UberEATS and they only send us 3. Ubers did refund us 1. Then when we ate the food. The taste is really disappointing, not like how it used to be. We order ox tongue and tripe with chili sauce, which literally not spicy at all and not enough flavoring, it doesn't even have the sichuan pepper flavor at all instead is peanut flavor. The orange beef taste terrible. Chong Ching spicy dry chicken, last time we ate there was spicy enough, but last night the spicy was barely there, even our kids can eat it. Over all we are very disappointed with our dinner last night. I still give them 2 star in hope that they will get better again.
The place is crowded with supplies that should be out of sight. And it's so cold inside, all the staff are wearing jackets, but the doors are all wide open. The service is inattentive. The four of us were seated at a large table and then they asked us to share the table. We ordered before the others arrived but their food was served first, which is when we realized they lost our order. We had to keep asking for more water. The personal plates were tiny saucers. The food was okay but nothing special at all.
I ordered spicy pork dumplings or whatever it was called (紅油水餃)and was greatly disappointed. The dumplings themselves were basically cheap supermarket-tier and the sauce was merely a faint suggestion towards authentic Sichuanese sauce in the dish it was supposed to be. It was just regular chiliflavored oil, I guess. And not even the good kind. The dish was expensive too! 6 pieces for 15 dollars. I felt sad opening my take away bag after anticipating a famous Sichuanese dish, as they advertise. The staff was nice though.
The food was good, but the service was desperately lacking. It was what my wife who was a server for 17 years calls, “drop and run” service. We needed forks and soy sauce, but nobody ever came back to check on us. Also, the restaurant was not very clean. Another thing that I needed was a new plate because there was an eyelash on my plate. That’s no big deal and happens, but normally the server comes and checks on you and finds out and brings you a new plate. The bathroom was disgusting. There was a big puddle of water right in the middle of the floor. On the plus side, there are plenty of things to choose from on the menu. And like I said, the food was tasty. But due to the poor service and the lack of cleanliness, we will probably find a different restaurant the next time we are in Chinatown
Kind of disappointing experience dining here. The dishes were not good. The pork was not fresh and had a smell like it's been in the fridge for a while. The fish fillet dish was small and costs more than other szechuan restaurants, and doesn't taste any good. The owner lady happens to be also the only server in the restaurant, who is also handling the phone and the take out orders. Overall, the food is expensive for the quality, and expect service to be minimal.
yu hsi "… -style. The staff was very accommodating and made sure everyone was happy with the dishes we ordered. The cold sesame noodles and spicy boiled beef were both delicious."
The second time I am ordering a take out soup and asking to make it not spicy, and both times comes out spicy, even though I ask so many times to make sure it’s not spicy. Very disappointed. Don’t wanna be back.
We came it was completely empty. The food is not authentic at all. Expensive and taste bad. I recommend to go somewhere in midtown or other places. The positive reviews are pretty fake. It was almost 80 dollar for two people and just 3 dishes that we barely touch because it taste so bad.
Worst sichuan food ever. Too oily, salty and not to mention the meat was obviously off! It also took forever for the cashier to get us the check. We were the only ones there until we left, that’s definitely a sign! Stay away from this place. Update: I gave $5 tip to them (they don’t deserve any at all!) while they tried to get $8, fortunately I took a picture of the receipt and Chase was great at solving the dispute quickly. Shame on this place!
I am a member of the US Military and went with four fellow service members during Fleet Week. We were in uniform and as such the owner incorrectly assumed I was not a local. The bill came and i added a tip that was undeserved as the food and service were both sub par. The bill for the five of us was $224.00 including the tip which i put on my credit card. When my statement arrived, three days later, I was charged $4724.00. I contacted my cc company , who asked for the original receipt which I didn't have, apparently they added a $4500.00 tip. I returned to the restaurant to get a copy of the receipt, the owner was extremely uncooperative and pretended you did not know English at all. She also acted very surprised to see me, as I mentioned earlier we were in uniform and she assumed I was from out of town and would be unable to follow up. I filed a police report and just today did an interview with a local media outlet that is assisting me. The story will be on the news in the next few days. Do not under ANY circumstances patronize this place as they are brazen thieves, even willing to rip off US Service members. I did contact the credit card company- JetBlue Mastercard. I need a copy of the receipt and the owner refused to provide me a copy. The police is involved, the local news and the court. I'll knock every door until I get my money back. $4,500 as a tip, this is insane
I ordered Mapo Tofu for 21$. It tasted really bad, almost like nothing. I never had asian food that bad before. But it gets worse. I wasn't asked for how much tip I wanted to give but it was just entered in the payment machine so I payed 27.55$. I was fine with that first but a few days later, I got a message from my bank that the payment was adjusted to 32.55$. Its a scam!!! I instruct the restaurant to refund my money!
Gets order wrong 3 out of 5 times that I order take out from them. Poor quality bar: the steam fish I ordered wasn’t properly cleaned and tasted bitter. Meanwhile price is very high. A lot of the reviews here are just outraged consumers. I would suggest: make your menu smaller and keep the food quality and freshness level high.
The food was very oily. My throat was hurting after eating their fried rice. Also, I specifically crossed out the Tip section because it was a take out order. My card was charged an $8 tip afterwards. Luckily, my bank refunded the $8 charge. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE as the food is below standard and service that they provide.
Food was HORRIBLE along with the service. I was so disappointed and was looking forward to a good meal in China Town during Lunar New Year. I didn't eat all of my meal. Only the plain white rice. The meat was fried and so salty. The waitress brought the wrong meal to our table we told her that no one ordered it she tried to make us eat it. I was happy to leave.
It’s very unpleasant dining experience. The guy looks like the owner who sat at table and nonstop yelled on the phone. The bathroom wasn’t clean and wet. We were only customer in the restaurant at time but food came so slowly and it’s cold. The woman in the restaurant did all work, hostess, waitresses and cashiers…she’s ignoring us for the check about more than half of hour. Worst ever, she dared to add the tip without my authorization! Don’t go this restaurant, you’ll very much regret it!
The fact that there was no one else besides us on a Sunday lunch time in Chinatown was a clear telltale sign. We should have worked on our instincts and walked out. We ordered steamboat - the fresh prawns and meat were more dead than my deceased grandma. The soup was like the Dead Sea. Took forever to boil. Good luck to those who dare to try for hefty price.
Don’t go. Food is not fresh . More expensive than it should. Walked in at 6:30pm and there is no anyone else. Eating for an hour, no one comes . It tells . Just don’t worth your money
Food was, unfortunately, sub-par. Portions were very small and prices were very high. We did not enjoy all but one dish, the Singapore Noodle. we ordered. Soup was served cold, food had no visual appeal, and was haphazardly put together. The server was quiet, kind, and seemed oblivious to our discontent. Do not recommend it.
8/5/22 update: I came again to try to the Braised beef fillet with Sichuan sauce. I placed my order and went to the bathroom to wash my hands. There was no soap so I told the front desk lady. While I was waiting outside the bathroom for her to refill it, I see one of the workers go into the bathroom, spend a couple minutes in there and then leave to go back to a table in the restaurant he was working at, where he continues to fill dumplings with meat with his bare hands. Knowing that he just used the bathroom and at best washed his hands with water but without soap, needless to say, I will never return to this disgusting place. 3/1/22 visit: Had the "Chong qing spicy dry chicken" and the "Cumin lamb." Both were excellent. The chicken was a $12.95 lunch special (available 11am to 5pm M-F). The cumin lamb wasn't on the lunch special list but the lady was nice enough to give it to me as I had to wait a bit to order. The interior is a bit dark and dingy; the place could use a renovation or at least some more lighting, but the food made up for it. Next time I want to try the "Braised beef with Sichuan chili sauce."
We’re very fond of Szechuan cuisine and make sure to try it wherever we go. Being in NYC’s Chinatown, we visited this place considering its name and location. When we went inside, the restaurant was completely empty, and we were the only ones there. We ordered Steamed Dumplings, which were cold and tasted like they were made a day ago, and Spicy pork dumplings which were a little warm but not hot. Moreover, the chili oil had no chilies and was just oil. Next, we ordered, Bokchoy, which wasn’t served fresh either and was instead microwaved because some of it was hot while other pieces were cold. We also ordered chopper pepper fish which wasn’t on the menu, but we were told they could make it. It turned out to be a fried fish with salt, and it was served over lettuce which is not the right way to serve it. Finally, we ordered our signature dish, which we love, the fish fillet in Szechuan sauce. The quantity was 1/4th of what we have always gotten, and so many Szechuan restaurants across the US. The fish had no salt, chili, or numbing taste and was rather bland. We had also ordered the Hot n Sour soup but never got it, and it was also included in the bill, which we had to ask to be removed. The restaurant is super expensive and is not worth the money we spent there.
I've been coming here for years and recently and it has gone down. It's honestly horrible for non hot pot dinner. All of the "sichuan" dishes are absolutely low quality and taste of the same fried breading and salt. The flavor is terrible. The prices are also extremely high for the small quantity of low quality food. Avoid. Oh, and they include the tip on the bill and don't tell you. They then have a line for more tip on the final receipt. This is just dishonest. Avoid this place.
Reviews seem all over the place for this restaurant. Maybe I tried it on a bad day. It was late afternoon weekday, no one else in the restaurant. Old dirty dishes were left from previous customers on at least 2 of the tables. I waited a long time to order because the woman working was busy doing other things at the front. Ordered fried vegetable dumplings and Szechuan cucumbers, which I’ve had many other places in Chinatown and Flushing and elsewhere. Way overpriced here, my total came to over $36. I think there were 6 tiny dumplings with barely anything in them, and a gross sweet dipping sauce, not the delicious black vinegar sauce I’ve had elsewhere. The cucumbers had no Szechuan peppers at all, no flavor at all, just slightly oily with some sesame seeds. I asked for tea and had to ask twice. I waited awhile for it to steep but even then the water was barely yellow. Looked inside it looked like there were a couple of pieces of something in there, not a whole thing of tea. I had to stand up and interrupt the woman working to pay and leave. One bathroom seemed to be out of order because of packing tape stretched across the open door? Used the other bathroom that had unflushed piss sitting in the urinal. Maybe this place is open late so it tastes good and you ignore the prices when you’re drunk? Otherwise, I really can’t understand how this place has even 3 star reviews or has stayed in business. Gross/bland food, tiny portions, unclean, bad service, and way overpriced. Always walked by and wanted to try, and now I know!
Title: Scammy billing practices — beware Review: Food was just okay, but the real problem was the bill. They overcharged us by $9 compared to the menu, then claimed it was an “old menu” but couldn’t show a new one. Only refunded $5 and still added a bogus $3.31 “tech fee.” Totally dishonest. I have receipts — this felt like a scam. Plenty of honest businesses in Chinatown deserve your money more. Skip this place.
Worst lunch special ever! Avoid this place!!! The grade from health department is still pending. This place is such a mess!!! I regretted right away after the hot soup was served with a plastic spoon. The rice was not even warm. The lady was busy with her phone and the place was such a terrible mess!!! Can’t believe I chose such a place since I am in Chinatown where lots of good food can be found.
When I went to this restaurant to buy cooking utensils, I ordered shredded beef with small pepper, boiled beef (with hemp and spicy), and dry-fried bitter gourd. The small pepper beef shreds are not fresh, beef shreds taste hard. Boiled beef dish with beef horn pepper cubes, understood as spicy, beef taste hard, not spicy taste. Dry-stir-fried bitter gourd can be eaten. Overall comment: Everything is ripe! Give a star is the service attitude is good, do not give the star can not comment!
