Good shengjianbao is an elusive tasty treat in the bay, it seemed, until we discovered this place. A tiny place with not much to see. $6.75 for 6 very soup-ful and flavorful buns. We also tried and enjoyed the "shredded pork & noodle w/ green onion sauce." We left full. I would add that, while these are tasty, they are a little bit different form factor than what I enjoyed in Shanghai (smaller, fried top-down, without sesame seeds).
Great Shanghai style soup dumplings and garlic noodles. The waitress is awesome in her recommendations. It's been here since the '90s
I’ve been coming here for over a decade. Since moving to New York, I still miss just this place, the Palo Alto tofu house, and Garden Fresh. I think some of the bad reviews are forgetting - they’re a hole in the wall, they operate on small margins in a city that exploded. We’re not entitled to delicious, cheap, fast food with amazing service. Restaurants went through hell in covid, and service staff is clearly very difficult to hire in this area these days, I see help wanted signs everywhere. The people they have are almost certainly slammed at any given time. It’s unfortunate the food didn’t deliver for some people, perhaps they missed sometimes in training. But my food was as good as ever this time (🤤) and the front desk girl was plenty polite. They are take out only now.
I love this place - the combo A is very good. I also like the HunTun soup. They do have Shanghai flavor - the bun flour is a bit thicker but not affect the flavor much. I could have this every weekend - they r so busy for weekend lunch time. Long wait until 2:00pm.
I ache for the pan fried soup dumplings. Very nice, friendly staff at the register. Loads of other authentic dishes. It would be wise to view a visit here like a visit to Shanghai itself. So check the ugly American customer is always right stuff at the door and truly enjoy the experience.
i go there every two months now for the past year, never disappoint! Quality and authentic pork buns with juice in the bun. They are attention to detail: they poke holes in the take out box so that the heat will not soften the buns, staying crispy!
The best crispy soup dumplings I have ever had. They closed temporarily during the pandemic, but luckily they are back, but only to-go orders only. Please support these wonderful people because nobody makes these delicious dumplings around here.
I don’t care what others say, as a native Shanghainese, this is the best authentic 上海生煎馒头 in the Bay Area. Don’t like the service or environment, Just order takeout and put on low heat skillet for 10 mins when get home.
The go to here is pan fried pork buns and shredded pork noodle with green onion sauce. I think there is dine in option too but I had it take out. Yummy! The buns are hot and it has a little soup in it. The noodles are well mixed especially with the onion sauce. Delicious. I would come back for more.
Most authentic Shanghai daily breakfast experience I have ever got in the Bay Area.
Pan fried pork buns is one of my favorite dish from Shanghai. The crispness of the bottom to the softness of the top from the steam. The pork the perfectly cooked in the middle with the heat from the oil from the frying. The chili and vinegar adds so much flavor and it's bursting in your mouth. I love sucking out the soup. Still love going to this place in Sunnyvale, CA. Check them out, they have a full menu with other items too. 🐷🐖🐽 📍 Shanghai Flavor Shop, Sunnyvale,
My favorite Chinese restaurant. Small family owned. I come here at minimum once a week. Their food is uncommonly good (especially pork buns, onion noodles and wonton soup) and their staff are sincere. Well worth a 5.0, but seems like some reviewers were hard on their simple setting and their well-meant efforts to manage customer traffic in a small setting. Tip - They sell uncooked buns for a low price (I think $0.50 each) if you know how to cook them. PS - I would choose PF Chang's for ambiance but this place for exceptionally delicious food.
Fantastic 生煎包 and surprisingly good and authentic noodle dishes. Service was authentically grouchy. Wouldn't have it any other way.
Absolutely amazing tasting fried buns! Great people working there is a bonus!!
Pan fried bun is the best out of two options at bay area. To go only and no need to try other stuff.

A little run down, definitely took a hit from COVID. I've been coming here for years and the food and service has been solid for a while. I hope the store continues to do well.

Great buns, curry soup and scallion noodles. Main down side is the hygiene. The entire place feels greasy and not been cleaned for years. But hay I still enjoy the food.
The food is flavorful the bowels were yummy and juicy and the shredded pork with sliced vegetables with noodles was excellent. It's a hole in the wall so you have to expect a hole in the wall setup. Go there for the food but not for the decor.
This place should get better ratings. Food is good but don't come here for the atmosphere, you get what you pay for. I liked the fried baos and the noodle combo. Owner seems hard working, teapot was a bit dirty on the outside.
Omg, their pan fried soup dumpling is amazing! It's like a rice bun dumpling wrapper, and the soup is nice and tangy. Overall it's good food, a good price, and I'll be coming back. Just expect to wait in line and don't expect fancy.
The Shanghai shredded pork noodle with green onion sauce is smokey and delicious, with a nice caramelized green onion flavor. The beef curry soup is light and refreshing reminding me of our trip to Shanghai. The SJB was good, perhaps best I've had in US but still not as good as Yang's in Shanghai. I like that they fry them upside down but thought base was too thickly bunched which made it chewy instead of crispy. On the upside this kept the juice in and they were very juicy. I'd skip the Shanghai spring rolls next time.
I had a to-go order and ordered the Pork Fried Rice and Pan Fried Pork Bun. It was timely with a 15 to 20 minute wait. I highly reccommend the Pan Fried Pork Bun. It had a mixture of soft and crispiness with the surprise soup inside. It stayed warm for a long time. The fried rice was okay. I wouldn't reccommend eating it alone like in other chinese restaurants. Overall, it was fairly tasty at the right price. I would definitely come back.
Shanghai pan fried pork dumplings are really tasty! Lots of juice inside. The top part wrapping is really thin. The bottom part of dumpling is thick with crunchy outside.
These are the best pan fried buns I've had around the area. They have a fairly small menu and ive only liked the pan fried buns. Must try!
This was delicious. Not sure about the reviews saying they treat you more rudely if you don't speak Mandarin. I was so scared about the reviews that I google translated how to say my dish in Mandarin when I went to pick up the food. I was better off speaking English. The lady was able to speak it and asked me to speak English. She wasn't particularly rude. Just neutral attitude.

Pan fried soup dumplings were great, as other reviewers have mentioned. The wrapper was a little thick, but overall still good. Service wasnt great, but not rude. Also ordered the egg roll, and wouldn't suggest it. Rolls were small and greasy.
Limited, simple menu. We went here for the pan fried Shanghai dumplings, which were super crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. 2 dumplings per person is a good "appetizer" but you'll definitely want more than that! Won ton soup was okay. Wontons were good, broth was really plain.
Food is overall good but sometimes the quality / flavor varies; the sheng jiang Bao are almost always great but we've had great hot & sour soup and the next time it'll be flavorless. Like others have mentioned, the service is your typical brusque Chinese service where they don't 'baby' you. Definitely tougher if you don't speak Mandarin and even then the service is...okay.
Pan fried pork bun is great, and so is shreeded noodle with green onion sause. But I think they should improve their environment, the table and utensils are not clean.
Do not get sweet sour pork!! DO get scallion oil noodles!!! Overall expensive as hell…

The pan fried pork bun (生煎包) is the highlight. The other dishes we ordered were a miss - the jellyfish and cucumber appetizer was unabashedly short on jellyfish, and the curry beef noodle soup was a watery yellow that didn't seem like curry or soup. Go with someone who at least speaks Mandarin. The order sheet is in Chinese only, though the menu has both languages, so you can at least match characters. Food comes quickly. We were asked to leave when finished because it was getting busy.
3.5 google reviews typically means wonderful authentic Chinese food with poor service. While this place resembles a third tier city restaurant which one would hope for a hidden gem, the food is underwhelming. It is authentic, just authentic bad Chinese food. You should only visit if you want to hide from your friends and family or to hold a secret office meeting.
Would not recommend if you do not speak mandarin! Other patrons and service was extremely rude. Came during busy lunch time, signed a sheet to 'line up'. Waited. Was next in line finally, and a patron just walked in and tried to take the table that was just freeing up. Quite rude, and waitresses were rude as well. Food was decent, a bit above average!
Food seems to be authentic and it was flavorful. I don't speak mandarin and this was an issue. Menu is translated to English but the order sheet is not. It took us a while to fill out our order. Waiter didn't offer ANY help. She was even annoyed it took us so long. She sent a different waiter and he was also impatient and rude. Bottom point, you need a translator or to be a native Chinese speaker when you go to this place. Don't think I will go back unless I go with someone who is fluent.
The taste is authentic. But such a ripoff! The deep fried pork look so sad and small. Everything is underweight. There are lots of other shanghainese places that are better.

I don’t understand how this restaurant get 5 star before. I totally understand the 1 star review. I have the exactly same experience over there. Table, plates and all other supplies are sticky. Server is terrible! No smile, just stand there to stare customers to eat, and “0” communication....how can I give more tips for this type server! Even the food, it was just ok!
Greasy and sticky plates, chopsticks and table surface. Worst rice cake dish I have ever had. Worst part, the waiter argued the tip amount, exactly like other reviews! Honestly don’t know why so many people still come here.
Worst service. Not clean. Not good shanghai chinese food. "I Shanghai Delight, 6016 Stevenson Blvd, Fremont, CA 94538" is a much better shanghai restaurant. "Shanghai Family Restaurant, 10877 N Wolfe Rd, Cupertino, CA 95014" is also much better. "Famous Food, 872 Old San Francisco Rd, Sunnyvale, CA 94086" is next to this restaurant and is a better choice.
I enjoyed the bun not necessarily the front desk’s attitude. Definitely makes your day worse. I was trying to start a chat by asking politely “are the buns freshly made”, she gave me a side-eye and answered condescendingly “what are you thinking?? Why do you even ask???” Not sure why the front desk thinks she can treat customers this way. But from other reviews, she seems to have a long history of doing that.
I would give negative star if I can. Both food and service are HORRIBLE!!! DO NOT GO HERE!!! Save your money and time, go to Ding’s Kitchen or Famous Food next door! We order cold beef for $6, and it came up with literally 10 PIECES extremely thin beef, just enough to cover a tiny plate. Their buns are just 1/4 meat with 3/4 bread that over cooked. Spent $20+ ordering food, ended up throw away large portion because it's so bad. More ridiculously, after we left, the waitress came out and argue the tip amount with us... I will NEVER visit this place again!!
Good food + Bad service. I never had such mixed feeling about a restaurant. Shengjian Bao is the best around the area. However, the service is also the worst. This front-desk lady probably is the boss, and she makes you feel like you are begging her for the food. And, she asked for extra money if you need source (what a joke). FYI, They only take to-go order now.
There is only one item on the whole menu that is pretty good. Everything else is average at best. The biggest problem here is the service. Very very rude, especially if they think you did not order enough food. BTW, four items for two adults and a 5 year old is definitely enough food. Stop being greedy! Your one-hit wonder is not going to last, especially when its not the best in the bay.
Updated: bad service so we left 10% tips. The male server threw the tips money into the dirty bowl and shouted at my face that "the tips is too little, don't come dine in next time". Food: plates and silverwares getting dirtier over the past couple years I dined here. ========================================= My go to place for Shanghainese pan fried bun (生煎包). $7/6 pieces. Super juicy. You need to eat the right way and try not to burn your tongue :D The shredded pork & noodle with green onion sauce (葱油肉丝版面) is not bad either, good flavor, slim on the meat side though. The restaurant itself is kinda hole in the wall place. Definitely doesn't look clean lol. The service can be off if you go right before they close. Sorry, I never really got a chance to take pictures of the buns because we just cannot wait when those are served..
Very good bao! green onion noodles aswell good! 4 stars for flavor! Customer service is not all that the lady in the front is rude so I don’t go often but it good 😊 .
I ordered wonton soup and pan fried buns. Neither are good. All the wontons are broken. The wontons must be refrozen and badly cooked. And the filling of pan fried buns are very fatty. Also the service is minimum. I'm not satisfied with food and decided to give no tip, then the stuff and owner of the store stopped me at the front door and forced me to pay tips. Of course they denies how bad their food is, and claiming 'We're very popular for the food'. To be honest, the so-called 'die for' Sheng Jian Bao is below average, and the wonton cannot even be compared with most home made ones from Chinese living in Bay Area. I'll never come again or recommend it to my friends.
horrible service, terrible food. $12.95 for a bowl of white rice... 生煎包 is flavorless... I won't be here again. I speak Shanghainese and Cantonese. So no cultural/language excuses. the waitress/owner only cares to say hi to a few frequent customers while her face appeared mad when I told her my 3 year old needs a high chair.

I had a terrible experience ordering food here. The fried bao was just average. The staff kept chatting with her friend while I was trying to order. A few minutes later, I ordered second time for my friend’s additional food. The staff then complained to me that it added up to their credit card fee when separate orders. She then asked me to pay by cash.
