Opinions de Habana Restaurant and Bar Austin
My husband and I enjoyed a fabulous meal here last night. So so so much so that I wanted to make sure to review the restaurant today. It had been probably a year since we’ve been there And I just forgotten about this wonderful option. It’s been around for many years. We shared a roasted and perfectly crisp on the outside and moist on the inside half chicken with Cuban beans and rice, yucca, and a delicious Cuban salad, but even had grilled scallions, a little bit like tiny onion rings, and the salad had wonderful field greens and fresh veggies with a wonderful mango salad dressing. The service was friendly and quick, and it was lovely to listen to Cuban music in the background. They also have outside dining when the weather is conducive. Highly recommend this restaurant and we will plan to return soon!
By far the best Cuban food I’ve ever eaten! Every single person at the table had something different so we were passing each other samples. It was not one bite of disappointment, just as amazing as the other. Thank for a wonderful experience Habana!!
Update: Been 3xs now and I get something different every time. Every dish is so flavorful and perfect. This is the perfect date night if you really want to impress with stellar flavors. There is always to go boxes bc the portions are so big. 10/10 highly recommend!!! Not many places knock my socks off, but this place did. From the food to the atmosphere, everything was fantastic. I have been spreading the word to anyone who will listen about this amazing restaurant. I went last weekend and I am already planning another visit, and I can't wait!!!
Tama. Cubano are super fantastic / The Pork shoulder is to die for as well. Our server MiMi is running for the mayor of Austin. Drink's kept coming, never had to ask. Very festive atmosphere. Good for couple's or groups. The wait staff is uber cool. Did not meet the manager however they must be good or most certainly the service would not be impeccable, as it most certainly is. Nathan manning the front door waiting to guide the Diner's to their delicious delight. Our first time here and it was difficult to depart as the ambiance was attractively AMAZING!
I’ve gone here for over 10 years and it’s always so delicious and consistent. German is the man! He always takes good care of anyone that comes inside the restaurant. This is a go to spot in Austin.
AMAZING sandwiches! Our server was extremely attentive and friendly. We loved the authentic Cuban sandwich & Caffe Cubano. Definitely will be back in the future!
This little hole in the wall restaurant may not look like much on the outside, but the food and drinks are amazing. We attempted to order way more food than 2 people could eat, and they tried to talk us out of it. They didn't try to make us spend a ton of money, though we did because we wanted to try a little of everything. The servers are all friendly, based on the ones I interacted with, and the different sauces paired well with the different meats and sides. I recommend trying a little of everything when you come. I will definitely be making the hour and 20 minute drive again for this amazing restaurant.
I was highly impressed with this place. The ambiance, setting and even location made you feel far away from the city. The service was great, our server Marcos was really attentive and patient. Food is fantastic, ropa vieja, vaca frita, paella were all fantastic! The rice and the beans were tasty. Pollo Friday was the only meat that I'd say is average. The sangria was great, President beer was served with a chilled glass. The un poco de todo appetizer had amazing wings, the tostones were a little thick but well cooked. The yuca frita was also great. The maduros (plantain) and yuca were fantastic. Only 5 stars cuban place I've rated across 5 different states. Highly recommended!
Barely made happy hour. Sat outside. Cool Cuban/Caribbean music. Great service. Momma had the plantain chips Nacho appetizer for dinner. I had the Cuban sandwich. Having had multiple Cuban sandwiches in Miami. Ft. Lauderdale, and Key West, and I make them at home, this was by far the best Cuban sandwich I have ever had. I am changing my recipe for home because of this sandwich. Beef empanada was also very good. Worth a trip. Forgot the tres leche cake. Cuban grandmothers recipe. Come prepared.
A really inviting low key place with some excellent tasting Cuban dishes! The ceiling fans keep the patio air moving on a hot summer evening, while you sip a classic mojito. " Un poco de todo" appetizer plate had something for everyone, wings and empanada were my favorite. "Lechon asado w/yuca con mojo" is a fantastic roasted pork! Make sure you arrive hungry because the portion was huge. Definitely worth the trip!
One of our favorite spots in Austin! Everything is always delicious and the service is super nice. Make sure you try the cheese empanadas!
A wonderful meal!! The hostess / waitress was attentive and very much wanting to please. The Cuban/Caribbean decor was a nice complement without being gaudy. The music fit the theme, though a bit loud. But the food . . .! Good size portions. We had the caramelized plantains, the Cuban nachos, and the 3 meat sampler (beef, pork, chicken) which came with white rice, yellow rice, black beans and red beans. All of it was VERY tasty. A great way to end the day! If we lived locally, this would be a place we would frequently visit.
I absolutely love this place. I drive from San Antonio to Austin just to have the pork and rice here. The atmosphere is so nice and love just kicking back outside and enjoying my food. This is the first place that I go to visit if I am ever in Austin. The cooks and the owners really know what they are doing. I wish them many more years of success and great food. Update: Their food is still everything it was before. I had the ropa vieja, arroz con gandules and black beans. It was soooooo delicious. This is my favorite place in all of Austin.
Went here on a whim and so glad we did! The meat eater got the ox tail stew and enjoyed it. The pescatarian got the Coconut and plantain fried shrimp and couldn't get enough of the chipotle salsa that was with it. The Mojito and sangria was also amazing! Perfect proportions in each. Great fast and friendly service! And there's an amazing nursery next door of you want to walk around after eating.
If you want a good, hearty meal in South Austin away from the city crowd, this is the place to go. I had lunch there one day and was served with a generous portion of meat paired with tasty rice and beans. 100% would return. Bring your own container because there’s a good chance you won’t be able to finish everything in one sitting!
I love smoking cigars here in their cabanas outside. Staff and service are great. They also have a humidor to buy cigars, decent selection for what it is. Their plantain chips are awesome!
All around excellent experience! The food and drinks were amazing. The atmosphere and music were exactly what I love. German was a great host. As this was my first visit, I can't wait to share with friends and family to make sure I bring more people that I know love food to experience this with me. I'll definitely be back again!
Coleyworld approved 💜 Everything was fantastic ! I ordered the fricase de pollo and it was SO good and plentiful. The chicken cooked to perfection and juicy. It was delivered on a platter with this delicious sauce that covered the plate. Potatoes, yellow rice and black beans as well. I’m about to go heat up my leftovers now! Can’t wait to go back!
Very delicious and it atmosphere feels like your in Cuba not to mention the wait staff were very fast ans attentive
What a gem ! We went there for dinner and it was fabulous! Their Croquetas are super delicious! My seafood paella was excellent and the Ropa Vieja was super tasty and tender! Their food is absolutely authentic and to be honest - better than in Cuba. If someone complains here, has never been to Cuba. We really loved the cabanas! So cozy! And the service was excellent.
The food was delicious! We had an appetizer sampler. The service was wonderful! We would definitely go back.
Nice surprise in S Austin. I had heard of Habana as a venue and, for some reason thought it was more Tex-Mexy than Cuban. I was wrong. This is a legit Cuban cuisine and delicioso. There is an influence of T-M in the Croquetas and Guacamole with plantains. So 👍🏽. We were all happy with our meals. Service was impressive. Will return.
we were in the neighborhood and stopped in for lunch and so glad we did! i haven’t had a cuban sandwich this good since i was in miami. i enjoyed every bite, with its pillowy bread, juicy meat, and crisp bite of the pickles. i definitely want to come back for more of their delicious looking dishes!
This was my second time visiting Habana. I forgot the vibe is always just right. On top of flavorful and filling food, I love the nature that surrounds customers during their dine in experience. Habana has tons of storytelling art on the walls and classic cubano tunes playing aloud. Come get your taste of Cuba here!
My family and I haven’t been in Habana restaurant in many years because now we’re living a little to far but we decided to go back in a Sunday afternoon to expend some family time and remember when we used to come here very often and have good time and let me tell you it’s better than what Used to be. We really enjoyed the food, still the cuban flavors we was looking for and the drinks Wow no complain the alcohol right on point especially the cuban mojito but the best was the experience we have and that was a lot thanks to the waitress German who provided us the best customer service we had in a very long time. 100% recommended base in my experience.
Great food! All 6 people in our group were VERY happy with their meal. Both pork and beef plates are perfectly made. Big portions. Outdoor Cabañas. WONDERFUL service... ask for Amy!! Came on Saturday at 9:30 and was not crowded. Really good drink options for all tastes. Bar is fully stocked. Cannot give enough praises for this place. After having gone to a “good” barbecue place and gotten disappointedly no end HABANA is a the GREATEST comeback!!!... completely recommend to all locals and tourists. Even the dessert was awesome.
This spot never disappoints. Always fresh and tasty. Excellent cubanos, congris, and maduros. Hidden Austin gem with parking!
I love Habana. I found this little oasis years ago when I moved to Austin. The little Tiki thatched huts, roof, and surrounding bamboo behind the bar adds to the topical feel. The drinks are phenomenal, along with the bartenders. My favorite is the Frojita, the Cuban version of the Pina Colada (Tres Leches style,) and the Cuban coffee drinks both traditional and frozen. The food is great too, they've expanded their menu quite a bit and it's easy to share food tapas style and the pallela is great too. I recently celebrated my birthday there with a few other Taurus friends, and they really took good care of us ! I highly recommend their tres leches cake for desert, and the Great Outdoors is next door if you want to walk off your meal in a beautiful environment. They have great large covered patio options, individual Tiki huts for up to 6 people with fans inside , searing indoors in a large dining room, spacious bar seating with lively music playing , back patio searing or bamboo surrounded larger dining below. What a hidden gem, with the flavor of Cuba in South Austin. WB
Almost close to the real arroz con pollo from my hometown of Puerto Rico. The exterior causes one to pause a moment, but once inside, it's a surprising transformation and ambience. Plantains were cooked perfectly and the right seasoning for the rice and chicken; however, the chicken could have used more seasoning to compliment the rice and balance each other. I'll give it a 9.5 out of 10 for the arroz con pollo. Tracia is a doll.
The food was amazing!. Their portions are really good, I got a Cuban sandwich, and my husband got a picadillo, both were perfectly cooked. The staff was so nice to us, we came with our dog and the owner was accommodating and helpful. The place is super dog friendly, you can tell they care about their customers. It was the best service I ever had. So far this is the best restaurant we've been in Texas. Thank you for the excellent service!
Had a great experience here with some friends. The food was delicious, like every single dish, they were short staffed on the day I went but still was satisfied with the service. I came here with 3 people and we all will be coming back at some point. I’ve been here once before on my own and had a few cocktails and those were delicious as well. Really no issues with the place besides the fact that every main dish/cocktail will put ya back between 15-20$. That’s not really an issue because the food is good, the flan was good but the cinnamon whipped cream stole the show and turned a good dish into an incredible one. The Yuca Borracho balls were incredible and the sauce they used complimented the balls perfectly. I had the Pollo Salteado which was good, not amazing but good/above average, while it wasn’t bland it could use more flavor/spices in my opinion but I don’t regret getting it. I was satisfied but not blown away by it. My friends had the Spicy chicken sandwich which looked delicious and he was very happy (and will probably be what I order next time) with and a beef empanada which looked like a normal empanada. His partner had a Sandwich Cubano which looked excellent and tasted great. Overall it has a great atmosphere and can make a perfect date night/pregame with friends, great food and good drinks just don’t expect to spend less than 30$. Again this place is worth the price I’m just letting the price conscious people know, overall o recommend coming here and trying the food and drinks for yourself
Best Cuban restaurant in Austin! Great for a quick drop in for a drink. Mocktails are great, the cocktails are even better! Perfectly situated on Congress complete with all encompassing cabana feel in Havana. Cigars present at the front, we’ll behaved dogs welcome in the back! The Cuban is amazing. Sized for two small meals or one huge one. The staff is so present and friendly. The small plates are priced $6-$9 and make perfect for a quick on the go bite. Vino says, “thanks for the water!”
Passed this restaurant on the way to my hotel and decided to come back for a late bite & I'm glad I did. The bartender recommended a dish since I am unfamiliar with Cuban cuisine. My dish was amazing & the portion size was more than enough to feed 2 people. There are several areas to lounge & talk. They also have a covered patio if you don't feel like eating inside. The decor inside is fascinating and bonus for them having a fully stocked bar.
I hope to get back here on my next trip. It was super solid. Three of us shared a dish recommended by our waiter. The waiter was on point. The hostices/waitresses were also attentive and welcoming. The covered seating was great. Very cool atmosphere! The food was excellent. I appreciated that there was no shortage of protein and healthy fats in the dish. The chimichurri, peppers, onions, yucca, and plantains were a treat. If you appreciate our new upside down food pyramid, you'll like the healthy food options here.
We were so excited to try this place and it did not disappoint! The food and drinks were delicious and super fresh. The restaurant is very clean and well kept up. We will definitely be back!
Always walk in here planning ahead of time to wear stretchy pants because I know you have to order nearly everything on the menu. It’s a must to bring a team with you with similar mindset. To taste all of their amazing dishes. It can only truly be fully experienced with a team of stretchy pants characters. Best food in town prove me wrong. Your plate should be unrecognizable with the assortment of quality food in it. Pro tip get the tres leches cake for dessert. There is always room for it.
This place has it ALL! It feels like home, but with way better food :) Everything my wife and I have here is par excellence. I recommend sitting at the bar to meet the locals, of which I’m proudly included. German & David know their art, and you can tell that they genuinely enjoy what they do. Be sure to get one of their free postcards at the host stand: “I left my heart in Habana” … and likely my keys. I can’t recommend this spot highly enough. Thank you and the crew for what you do. We’ll be seeing you again this week!
It's a great place to enjoy Cuban cuisine. The location is pretty convenient on S. congress just north of Ben White. Their food portions are sizable, with their sandwiches being very filling. My favorite is their Cubano, which actually comes with a generous heaping of tender lechon inside the sandwich too. I think for the portions and quality of the food, the prices are extremely reasonable, and you'll never leave feeling unsatiated. Add to that, a very friendly restaurant crew that even remembered when I dined there a month ago, makes Habana Cafe one of Austin's great classic restaurants.
Tucked away on the lower side of South Congress is one of Austin’s best kept culinary secrets! Boasting what many would say is the best mojito in the city, Habana is a great spot to eat, drink, socialize, and unwind with an extensive yet authentic menu. We particularly recommend the empanada sampler and their flagship Cubano Sandwich!
Cuban nachos, king's pork, tres leches, mojito, pina colada, Cafe con Leche. All delicious! Everything was great. The mojito in particular blew me away. I lived in Miami 5 years and you won't find a better mojito there. Never been to Cuba... 5 stars all around, and I will be back. Dog friendly, fun cabanas. Lovely bamboo garden. I recommend going nuts with tropical foliage in the spring.
Had dinner at Habana Restaurant and it was such a treat — the Lechón Asado was melt-in-your-mouth good, and the Sandwich Cubano (pressed Cuban bread with roast pork, ham, Swiss, pickles) hit all the right notes. I also enjoyed the Tostones with mojo and Yuca Frita — simple but addictive sides. The atmosphere felt tropical and relaxed (love the cabanas and outdoor seating), and the staff were friendly and welcoming — they made us feel right at home. The cocktails (hello, mojito!) were excellent companions to the vibrant Cuban flavors.
YALL. This is a GEM. It’s very rare that I experience a taste that I’ve never tasted, but my tastebuds were SURPRISED at all of the rich flavor that Habana had to offer. We are vegetarian, and there is a clearly marked vegetarian section of the menu that is not half-ass, it’s full flavor and full richness! I was so happy to find a Picadillo with Impossible Meat instead of beef. The empanadas with the crazy sauces and the plantains blew our minds. The cherry on top was the Cuban sodas 😋Anthony was a very sweet and fun waiter and super knowledgeable about the whole menu! Highly recommend checking this place out!
We stopped in during the rainy 4th weekend by chance and wow did we love this place!! The drinks were so fresh and phenomenal. We had the tea summer cocktail, an old fashioned and the mango drink. All were excellent. I had the sliders app and the beef empanada for my meal- both were fantastic. Lots of flavor in the slides, perfect Cuban. The empanada was perfectly crispy but still tender, filled to perfection. The star of the meal was their chimichurri. Our server was gracious enough to give me a big to go of it! Absolutely fantastic. Everyone enjoyed their dishes - all the meats were so flavorful and tender. The plantains were perfect, according to my Peruvian friend! We finished with the tres leches and that was the best I’ve ever had as well. I absolutely loved this meal and would happily return!
Of all the places we ate over this long weekend (Chuy's, Corner Restaurant, Eberly's, In-and-Out, Geraldine's, Terry Black's to name a few), Habana's was easily our favorite. The staff is courteous, giving us space to enjoy the meal yet attentive in making sure our drinks were topped off (10/10 for the mojitos!) The atmosphere is authentic and relaxing. The Empanada Sampler is INCREDIBLE: I could eat that marinated chicken one all day, every day. I love the little details, too - each flavor has a different crimped edge, so it feels like the chef really cares about what's being served. The Island style guac is so inventive, delicious, and fresh. I'm for sure going to try and replicate the recipe. Folks say it's too expensive for what you get, but for these flavors, I'll gladly pay. They deserve every cent!

We love their tres leches, sliders, and plantains! Great spot to dine in and we often do takeout for when we host parties. Very authentic recipes if you are looking for the real deal.
Great recommendations from staff on what to order but some of us knew right out what we were getting. We know good Cuban and the ropa vieja did not disappoint.

We were looking to eat some good Cuban food and found Habana in South Austin... the ambiance was nice and comfortable we did not like the "fabuloso" smell but I have to say everything was clean. The bar looked great but we were celebrating and decided to sit outside. The little cabanas are great and very comfortable plus the music made it feel even better. After we oder some coctails and food we enjoy the weather and the music. The food got delivered but seem to small and saddly a little cold; we had the Rabo encendido... I had alot of expectations and I had to say they were not met. The meat was ok! the rice was a little cold and the portion (it was posted that served two) was small with little meat. The taste always ok, I would say ok+ but not for price. Flan was good and the best was the cortadito. In general was a ok to good experience we are coming back to try another dish.
Four stars only because of price. Felt it was just on the high side for it's obscurity and location. The drinks were pricey at $9 for an 8oz. Mojito. Will try happy hour next time. The food was a bit pricey as well. That being said, the quality of food and atmosphere were excellent. Our party of 6 sat outside in one of the wooden cabanas with grass roof. The food was very authentic. Typically when I've dined at an authentic restaurant the food can be bland for fear of turning away customers. Not so here. The flavors came on strong and perfect. The dishes we tasted had us trying to figure out just what spices the chef had used to attain the flavor. Probably the best Cubano sandwich any of us had ever had. The Cuban Nachos sound Americanized, but we're actually especially good. Plus having a choice of Plantains prepared various ways was very tasty. If you ate here during happy hour and just got a Cubano, you'd be able to escape on the cheap side and still be satisfied. The portions were so large that you could dine family style and share entrees. All in all, in spite of the price, I'd definitely go back and on the whole the experience was very enjoyable.
Atmosphere: Funky, lounge/Cuban vibe Service: Friendly and efficient Food: Pork was delicious, braised and perfectly tender, black beans were flavorful, rice was on the dry side. Guacamole was okay, didn’t taste freshly made. Plantains we’re crispy and delicious. Portions are generous. Pricing: Moderately expensive $15 for Guacamole, $14.00 for lunch entree.
I started with a skinny margarita straight up. Thanks to the bartender for the heavy pour. We ordered the empanada sampler with one beef, one chicken and one queso empanada. I liked the queso empanada the most. It had the most flavor. The beef and chicken need more seasoning. I ordered the Cubano sandwich and it was delicious and huge. Great flavors! We sat outside in one of the cabanas. My shorts got caught on a couple of nail heads on the bench.
I was visiting from California. My bro in law recommended this place for Cuban/ Puerto Rican cuisine. Cozy environment. Food was good. Got sampler platters to try variety. It was big servings. Loved the plantain chips. Pricing was between $20-25 per plate. Definitely a place to try out if in area craving Cuban/ Puerto Rican flavor.

This place was ok. Portions seemed a little small for the plate we ordered. The taste was ok with some but a little plain and bland on others. Inside of the restaurant was cool and had a nice vibe. Liked that you could sit outside in a covered area if you wanted. Our service was good but nothing special. Don’t think I’d come back but wasn’t the worst.
Too expensive for what you get… :/ 3/5 empanada - i got the beef. Good size but too expensive for just one. Decent exterior fry (on the lighter side) 3/5 sandwich bistek - cant comprehend that this sandwich is $24… definitely a rip off for the quality. I got it bc it was recommended. Bistek is tough, sandwich is basic :/
Habana Soco is a very laid-back, casual cuban spot. There’s outdoor seating, which is nice on a good weather day, and a free parking lot. The service was friendly but not as attentive. As for the food, it was okay but nothing particularly memorable. Everything was decent, just not great or especially flavorful compared to other options around town. It’s also kinda pricey for what you get.
Staple foods are my preferred point of reference when it comes food, after all is why we really go out to eat. I was happy to come and sample this cuban spot and I will surely go for round 2, as the first visit was average on the food front: I ordered some ROPA VIEJA (shredded beef with rice and beans) and the beef itself was very good, but the meal fell apart with the absence of the delicious beans and moist white rice customary of this dish. The vibe of the place was simple and with cool cuban themed paintings such as Celia Cruz. The staff was very friendly and the service was fast, as I had hoped, given the fact that I was the 2nd table, early in the pm during the week. Since the rice was lacking some flavor I decided to get some avocado to add, but sadly it came at the end of the meal. The overall price tag I felt it was above the meal experience, specially when I saw the hit I took for the avocado serving alone; $8!!! ouch. Again, I'll try it again so I can sample other dishes and then let you know how it went.
Nice little restaurant in an unassuming building. Service was great but the food was expensive for the quality of the food you get. The beef empanada and the tres leches was really good. My wife really enjoyed the flan, however the rest of the food was mediocre. The atmosphere was nice and quiet and the service was really good.

Went to this place expecting a casual dinner no problem but tbh the food here is priced as high as a very high end restaurant as much as Red Ash or Guest House but the food doesn’t meet the prices it’s very very average almost like chain restaurant quality or lower. Food taste right out the can of a line kitchen. We spent $150 on 2 people that’s crazy if I were to go to a fine dining establishment and order for 2 ppl the bill would not have been this high. Tbh save your money go to a really really good restaurant like ember kitchen, red ash, intero, odd duck and you will pay just as much for 100000x better food. Tbh don’t even go here. Drinks looked good but every single thing was alcohol forward and mojitos were flat
Ate here today with a friend and it was the most awful Cuban food I’ve ever had. I’ve had Cuban food in L.A., New York, Paris and Mexico City. While I haven’t been to Cuba, I grew up in an area with a sizable Cuban community and know what “good” Cuban food is. This is not it. I ordered Ropa Vieja & Congris (a typical rice & bean side). They arrived cold. It was clear this stuff had been sitting around for 3 days and they tried to “reheat” it and didn’t do a good job. The rice and beans were hard and glossy from being old and reheated more than once. I also ordered a mojito and it came with some of the oldest mint leaves I’ve ever seen… I could tell they were already wilting because they weren’t muddled very well. The drink tasted like pure alcohol & literally had no mint flavor. Lastly, I paid $35 with tip for the hot mess of a meal I described above! Realy?! Almost $40 USD. Ridiculous 👎👎 This food was so disgusting, I ate 1/4 of it just bc I was hungry. I then went home and made me a salad 👇 to cover the stank of the aftertaste & nasty burps I had after eating this food. Here’s a pic of my wonderful salad. Total cost with fresh ingredients at home: $2.
** Visited again recently and I was completely dissatisfied with how it went, we didn’t even stay to eat. We were sat and waited at our table for 15+ minutes for anyone to even check on us, bring water or anything, but they were steady seating people around us so we decided to get up and go somewhere with a bit more awareness. The people that sat us happily watched us leave and didn’t bother to ask if there was a problem. Or if they could help. A few of their online menus are also severely out of date and the prices in TWO places do not match. Definitely won’t spend my time coming back*** Visiting Habana was a nice little surprise; this was my first time having Cuban food, and I know for sure that we plan to come back very soon! Immediately, I fell in love with the greenery both inside and out on the patio! I can tell that a lot of thought went into making Habana feel welcoming and warm. I started with the refreshing Rose Sangria and it was the only drink I needed(just how I like it). To this day I'm still thinking about the Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich that I had: it beats out any chicken sandwich I've had from most of the big fast-food brands. We had a side order of rice + black beans, it was amazing! It reminded me of Jamaican rice and peas; I made sure to take most of it home to savor later haha. If you haven't been to Habana, this is your sign to go!
All was good except for the value. Meals (dinner) average $26-28 a plate and not worth that price. Empanadas are good boy, again, overly priced. I entitled Cuban croquettes but wouldn't try them here for what they're asking. I'm not cheap and will pay for a quality meal - these are overpriced. The restaurant was empty (is and one other couple on a Tuesday night). It's ashame - this place could do well if they weren't trying to stay alive by over charging.
As a Miami native and recent Austin transplant, I was looking for a new Cuban restaurant. I thought Habana could be a good contender but immediately had sticker shock as prices are about double that of Miami for everything from food to coffee. All things considered the menu is also quite limited so we settled on a Cuban sandwich with a side of rice and black beans and Tostones. The Cuban sandwich was big enough to split and was fairly tasty though a little heavy on the mustard. The rice and beans were small portions and lacked flavor (like something out of a can) and while I had ordered what I thought was a side of Tostones, the waitress ended up bringing an appetizer which was the equivalent of about 1 large or 2 small plantains worth of Tostones for $12. Unfortunately, they were not well prepared as even my Asian wife made better Tostones after watching YouTube once. We skipped the coffee and I opted to make my café pilon at home. Meanwhile, the search continues for a genuine Cuban restaurant in Austin.
This place has so much potential and could be great, but needs an update! The pros are the staff which is nice and friendly and the food, which is tasty. More on improvements at the end. The atmosphere is nice and there's a Cuban flair throughout. The maduros are always a favorite, but was a little undercooked. The Vaca frita was really good and flavorful and the beans and rice accommodated perfectly. The pollo saleteado was good, although the chicken a little overcooked. The kids dishes were tasty and they enjoyed it, especially the chicken wings. The mojitos were not very good. I'm not sure the mint leaves for muddled enough and they were too watered down and not very sweet. As for the updates, it almost seems like ownership is not investing into this restaurant. The outdoor cabana areas are falling apart and there are exposed nails and support. The place could really just use a good cleaning and update. I think if this is done, business will boom because there's a need for a good Cuban restaurant in Austin.
We came here a year ago and it was very authentic. We live in San Antonio so whenever we come to Austin we want to eat some authentic Cuban. Spending the day here, we waited until night time to eat dinner and decided we’d stop by Habana before heading home. We ordered yuca Frita and papa rellena for appetizers. The second order of papa rellena was cold - okay no problem. We got it redone and thought nothing of it. Simple mistake I’m sure. Once the food came out, that’s where things took a turn. I don’t know if the cook is new or they have new management… but the food just didn’t taste right at all. We ordered chicken y arroz and the arroz didn’t even taste like yellow rice. The chicken was super dry - almost like it was cooked overnight and left out for 8 hours. My wife and daughters didn’t finish their food and just gave it to the dogs instead. We came with high expectations but came out not wanting to come back :(
Food was super salty, I must've had 4 glasses of water because of all the salt. We ordered Rabo encendido (ox tail), outrageously expensive ($46 for 2 people) and only gave us 4 pieces of ox tail s…
I went to this restaurant 3 times in total. The first was around four to five years ago, and I really enjoyed the experience. I was there with my girlfriend, and we enjoyed the food and ambiance. T…
I normally don't post but this place was a BIG let down. Food quality did not match price point. Waitress was: inattentive, poor attitude, killed the vibe, and rushed/pressured me to give a undeserved tip. Manager indifferent to my comments. If you really know about Cuban cuisine just avoid it and make food at home.
I went to Habana for a Timeleft event and was shocked to see a 22% gratuity ($12.32) automatically tacked onto my bill. This wasn’t a private party where I was hosting a large group, it was an event organized by Timeleft. Charging attendees like this feels sneaky and unprofessional. I called the restaurant the same day and was told they would refund the gratuity in a couple of days. Four days later, I called back, only to be told the owner decided not to honor the refund and that “there’s nothing they can do.” This is incredibly frustrating , first you promise a refund, then go back on your word? That’s not how you treat customers. I’ll never return and I’ll make sure others are aware of this experience. Update: I emailed the owner after their public reply, as they asked, and never received a response. This proves how dishonest and unprofessional they are making promises they don’t keep. It’s not about the $12, it’s about integrity. Bad business all around. And when the owner operates this way, you can’t expect any better customer service from their staff.
This is NOT Cuban food AT ALL!!! This is a regular American food restaurant that they just painted the restaurant yellow, put some music and called it Cuban Food. As Cuban I feel offended by it. Servers don't speak Spanish, they don't know the culture, they have no clue how to do mojo, is just HORRIBLE!!! I Do Not recommend this restaurant. Again, to who ever read this, THIS DOESN'T REPRESENT THE CUBAN FOOD.
Here is my honest review of this restaurant: As someone that is of Latin descent and enjoys Cuban food very much. No one greeted us at the door or asked us to wait to be seated so we took initiative and walked ourselves to a table after waiting on someone to acknowledge us. Got our own highchair and brought to the table. As someone that has waited tables before I can understand how backed up a waiter or waitress can get, but there was only two other patrons in the restaurant. My main issue with this place and why I’d never go back is the ridiculous prices for the quality of the food. We visit Miami often(ton of Cuban restaurants) so we are very familiar with quality of food and pricing should be. The prices at this restaurant were ridiculous for what it is. (Not fine dining) the plantains were not good—-ordered them separately to our meal. The meal was not good. The empanadas were not bad but barely any meat inside. They also automatically charge you 22% for tip for a party of 5 (even if the service is bad) I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant based on our experience there. Look through the menu and check their prices before you go.
Food was ok but is over prized for a ropa vieja $30 a person for rice beans and meat, the service was terrible lady didn’t offer nothing just brought to me water one glass never come back to see if I need anything or more water I will expect at least for the price for her to offer mor water, the tipping is on the machine already showing the minimum percentage of 22% is no way so $30 + tip. Ever will come back to this place
The food was not good at all. I had the Cuban sandwich. I figured try something simple but the pork was so salty there was no way to eat it. My wife had the ropa vieja but it lacked. The plantain was terrible and not to mention the sandwich with fries was 25 dollars. Had the food been good it would be worth it. They offered to remake it but I don’t see how it could have gotten better. Service was ok. The best thing there was the soda.
