I wish I could submit 6 stars for service. It was really good. Outstanding cuisine. I am vegetarian, and was able to find plenty of options for myself not only from vegetarian menu section but also among appetizers and soups. Will certainly be back.
What an amazing gem in the heart of Baltimore! The food was amazing starting with appetizers-eggplant and some filled pastries, amazing lamb and beef entrees and finishing with desserts! Every dish was perfect which is a rare occurrence at any restaurant. Prices are moderate and value for the $$ is best you can get. The place is nicely decorated and service was excellent. There is street parking in front but also a large paid parking lot next to the building. We will be back!
9/17/2025 My first afghan restaurant and on a nice rainy day. I ended up here with help of the timeleft app, was seated as soon as I walked in the door. I started with the AUSHAK and a glass of white wine. Both were great I love how tender the pasta is, the yogurt mixed with the cilantro sauce( they give for the table) by far is the best combo. The naan was thick and such a good touch to soak up all the pasta sauce. Ended up the meal with the afghan style ice cream which had a taste that I was not used to. I loved the fresh fruits and the cardamom in the ice cream had my tastebuds singing. The seating has 2 areas and a nice little bar in the back. I noticed a new customers coming in and requesting single seating which was not a problem for this spot. Our server was very punctual clearing plates, getting refills I just would have loved to hear about the new items and drinks that were on the table before I ordered. Bathroom rating:5/5
Delicious and unique. Stopped by for a solo dinner, very friendly and professional staff, large space, good wine and cocktail selection and so many food options! Haven't had Afghani food before and this was a treat. Ordered the salmon specialty and some bread. Highly recommend and would come back on a future trip.
I was first a little skeptical of visiting because I had previously DoorDash'd food from The Helmand and wasn't super enthused. However, they really delivered when it comes to in-house meals. I visited with a party of over 10 and they were able to accomodate us and serve us quickly. They have lots of fantastic vegetarian options revolving around rice, lentils, and curries. Everything we had was colorful and flavorful. Would definitely love to visit again.
Really great food. Tender cooked meats in delicious savory sauces. The dining room is nice. It is a really busy place and fills up quickly, so reservations are best. The Turkish coffee was really good. My only complaint (and i know this sounds strange), but the food came out too quickly. We ordered an appetizer, and it came out 2 minutes later. We ordered dinner, and it came out in 5 min. I just wanted to sit and chat with my friends for a few minutes and enjoy the ambiance. Overall, it was a great experience and I will go again.
We’d heard about The Helmand for years and finally got around to visiting. Went on a Wednesday evening. The naan was the best I’ve ever had. The mantwo was a good appetizer. We both had lamb shank as our entrees and really enjoyed it. The kabuli rice that came with it was extremely good. For our first time having Afghan food, I found it to be well flavored and tasty. The staff was very attentive as well. I would absolutely return.
Absolutely loved our experience at The Helmand. We ordered the Chicken Kabuli and Zardaaloo Challow, along with their refreshing summer yogurt and cucumber drink — everything was top-notch. The flavors were rich and beautifully balanced, easily among the best Afghan dishes we’ve had. The service was just as impressive — our food arrived within 10–15 minutes, and the servers were attentive, warm, and professional. The ambiance is elegant, cultured, and rich with character, making it a great spot for everything from casual meals to special occasions. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy incredible Afghan cuisine in a welcoming and refined setting. We’ll definitely be back!
Great Afghan food in an authentic environment. Service was also great and I enjoyed the waiter's suggestions for the food.
Absolutely MUST try!! I am a total foodie yet rarely leave reviews – but this was one the best meals I’ve ever had in my life. Everything was so perfectly spiced/salted. We started with the pumpkin appetizer, which was delicious and similar to butternut squash. The flatbread was awesome (and made in-house, in a wood-fired oven!). I can’t remember the names of the entrees – one was a salad with the most tender, flavorful steak, and the other was a chicken dish special. The service was also excellent! We’ll definitely be back when in the area.
Delicious food - plenty of space - quick, attentive service. If you look in and see an empty place don’t be surprised and turn around. I’m always hesitant with an “empty” place, but there’s a second room! The food I had was all delicious. I took their recommendations which were stellar. I can’t remember the names but the lamb with rice, carrots, and raisins was 10/10.
Southern Asian cooking is almost always good, but occasionally we run across a balance of flavor, texture, and heat that leaves me with a delightfully warm feeling inside about a half hour after I've left, and a desire to return as soon as possible. The Helmand was one of those experiences. Noodles, meat, rice, stuffed pasta, sauces, and freshly baked bread are all present, each with a familiarity that screams 'comfort food', but with a uniqueness that is unlike anything else I've had. We were fortunate enough to be seated near the back, with a view of the oven, whose flames added to the atmosphere, as well as baking their bread. Lighting was subdued, making it even more of a fine dining experience. The menu, along with the wait staff, provided enough information about the unfamiliar item names to make ordering simple and low risk. Save room for the Jala ice cream, flavored with cardamom, topped with pomegranate syrup, Asian noodles (!), and almonds.
This place was amazing!! The food had a lot of great flavors and spices. Friendly and attentive staff. I’m not surprised why this place is always packed and has great reviews.
Loved this place! Amazing food and a great location. The service was interesting - I had a reservation for 8 but I had it on the wrong date (my mistake) but they were still able to seat us super quickly even with it being a busy Saturday night - EXTREMELY nice of them. But then our actual server was suboptimal, we basically had to chase him down to get anything done. So while our experience with the service was good thanks to their graciousness but then the dining service wasn't great. The food itself was really delicious and quick my favorite was the Bendi (okra), Banjan Lagathak, and the Lamb Lawand! The mushrooms in the lamb lawand were so tasty, a nice texture and just full of flavor. For dessert the cheesecake was REALLY good, everything else was in my opinion not worth it. Would definitely come back here again!
I had never had Afghanistan dishes before. This restaurant exceeded my expectations! I had the chicken Lawand and wow! The flavors were so delicious. Alfredo did an excellent job taking care of us. I would definitely come back again and again.
The Helmand situated on historic Charles Street by Mt. Vernon monument in Baltimore is a rare gem in a city that has suffered through many failed incarnations and setbacks. Known for its Afghanistan dishes and confirmed of its authentic taste by my dinner mate who was the chief foreign correspondent stationed there, this local staple has been delivering one smashing dish after another. As an art student I visited The Helmand a handful of times, and after over a 20yr absence, what a surprise it was to be recognized by the maitre’d after so many years this time around. Good to know that they also treat their employees really well here as well. The decor of this place over the years has not veered away from its original design of Afghani cultural references adorning the walls including clothing, ceramics and a flag. Once you place your orders, your appetizers come deceptively fast. We had the mantwo and seared eggplant app. My only complaint is that I wish the mantwo came with 2 pieces. It was the most delicious delicacy topped with chickpeas stewed to perfection. For dinner we had a stewed chicken, divine, lamb special, a bit tough, and rice dish, that was similar to a birwani where the meat was inside the rice that was seasoned w saffron, raisins, herbs spices and finely julienned carrots strips. Our meal was excellent! Cannot wait to come back very soon.
Tasty and well crafted Afghani food with friendly and knowledgeable staff and nice cultural decor. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options, comprising about half the menu. Ordered the vegetarian soup, naan, vegetarian platter, vegetarian dolmas, and the cauliflower and chickpeas dish. The baklava for dessert was super yummy. All was super tasty with unique flavors.
By far my favorite restaurant in Baltimore. Been coming back at least once a month and every time the food/service are wonderful and delicious. Never disappointed by their menu and consistent food. I always recommend this restaurant to anyone who’s new to Baltimore for authentic food choices.
Food was fantastic! The pumpkin appetizer was so simple but like nothing I'd had before. I had the Aushka and loved the spices in it all. Also,I wish I could give 10 stars for food service atmosphere. Everyone was very friendly and attentive.
First time there. Highly recommend. Spotless, clean, impeccable service from the first greeting and throughout the dinner. It was worth it just for the naan. Kaddo Borwani pumpkin appetizer, Kabuli Pallow lamb, rice, raisins and julienne carrots. The Vegetarian Mantwo stuffed pastries with yellow split peas and carrot sauce. Sorry, no picture of pumpkin appetizer. Didn't last long enough to take a snap. Please try. You will not be disappointed.
Service is amazing. The staff is so kind and knowledgeable. The food is out of this world! And the Turkish coffee is 11/10 fantastic.
This Baltimore Afghan restaurant was a joy to go to when I was visiting from out of town. A waiter immediately noticed that my table rocked a little and before I even noticed it he had fixed it. Service was excellent with multiple wait staff asking if I was pleased. My food was excellent and an enjoyable plunge into Afghan cuisine. Ambience was interesting with carpets adorning the floors and some walls. I would certainly return.
We have always been ardent fans of Afgani cuisine. We were served by Mr. Sadiq. He was very friendly and polite. The food was delicious. The restaurant was crowded but there was no discomfort; the servers did an awesome job, duly attending everybody. There was no rush. The whole atmosphere was very welcoming.
I like the place, soeviakly close to mt vernon and historic site building. We ordered lamb kabaab and rice kebololi both delicious. For lamb soup taste like goulash soup but more light, very nice.
This place is all time! I think an absolute Baltimore must! Also it’s not frufru expensive tiny servings, it’s large servings of excellent homemade food. The flavors are unique and delicious. Also, the service was the best I’ve had maybe ever, seriously terrific experience! Thank you!
On a recommendation from a local, my partner and I made reservations at The Helmand, located in Mt. Vernon, near downtown Baltimore. The restaurant boasts authentic Afghani cuisine, and has been open for 25 years. We were lucky to find street parking steps away from the front door on such a cold night. Short of having us sit on the floor, the restaurant had an authentic Middle-Eastern feel. Two dining areas were set with white table linens and cloth napkins. Although the tables seemed too wide for intimate conversation, the staff was amenable to a seating adjustment. The star of the show was the food. We started with the kaddo borawani, an appetizer of pan-fried baby pumpkin seasoned with sugar and yogurt garlic sauce. This dish was surprisingly tasty, and not too sweet. We complemented this with a Spanish red wine and a large order of Naan. The small order of Naan would have sufficed for two. If you are familiar with traditional Indian naan, heads up. This naan is heartier, slightly thicker, and seasoned perfectly. The wine list included mostly California, French, Italian and Spanish wines. Many options were by the bottle only, but there were plenty of choices by the glass as well. We shared a main dish, the zardalu challow. Tender pieces of lamb seasoned with apricot, tomatoes, garlic, turmeric, and chili peppers were served with sweet, spicy turnips and challow (specially prepared long-grain rice). An interesting sauce of cilantro and lime was brought to add to the challow. The sweet and spicy flavors of this dish were intense, and paired well with the Spanish wine. I’m not used to eating food with so much flavor; this is where The Helmand shines. After finishing the entre, we ordered two desserts and coffee; we were pleased to discover The Helmand serves authentic Turkish coffee. The feereny was a light custard topped with fresh fruit. It was overshadowed by the Afghani ice cream, however. Listed on the menu as “special ice cream,” the cardamom-infused vanilla ice cream is served on top of dates, figs, and mangoes. Definitely our favorite. Service at The Helmand was timely, but curt. There was no engagement with the wait-staff; they did their job efficiently, and did not interrupt our meal or conversation. This felt like their style. Main dishes range from $14 to $20, with a few choices above that range (rack of lamb, for example). The prices felt reasonable for quality food, authentic atmosphere, and prompt service. With tip expect to pay about $50 per person, which would include one appetizer, naan, two glasses wine, two entrees, two coffees, and two desserts. We recommend The Helmand for date-night, special occasions, or just because you haven’t tried Afghani food yet.
Great service. Authentic Afghan dishes that were all well balanced. Great place if you love lamb. Also plenty of vegetarian options.
One of the true institutions of Baltimore, the Helmand continues to serve up delicious and relatively unknown afghan cuisine in a laid back, but elegant environment. The servers are well versed in the different menu options, and are helpful in navigating through the offerings. Recommend getting appetizers involving pumpkin to share, and differing entrees for all guests. This is a great place to take someone from out of town, or a new date. Prices are a steal compared to what you are getting. Highly recommended
Amazing food. Full of spices and flavors. Really fast service considering how busy and packed the restaurant was. Very professional service in this busy restaurant yet they were still friendly and patient. Dining room is loud but well worth the delicious food. Parking can be a bit challenging.
The Helmand was fantastic. Warm, inviting vibe with a cozy, casual feel. The Afghan dishes were flavorful, fresh, and well-prepared — every bite felt authentic. Service was friendly and attentive. Great spot for a relaxed meal with bold, delicious flavors.
We loved the cozy atmosphere, comforting and delicious food, and kind, welcoming staff members. We enjoyed the Aushak and pumpkin for apps, Kabouli pallow and lamb lawand for entrees, and afghani ice cream for dessert. Already looking forward to our next visit! Thank you!!
Delicious! Plus, we told our server we were in a hurry to catch a show, and he managed to get us out with dessert and coffee in about 35 minutes. And managed not to make it feel rushed!
Wow, wow, wow. Waltzed into this place on NYE without reservations. No problem. Sat us and within 15 minutes food was on the table. INCREDIBLE!!!
I’ve eaten at The Helmand several times over the past few years. Each & every time I’m in Baltimore, it’s a mandatory meal. The food is just so good. So many delicious options, that it’s always difficult to choose each time. I’ve had great meals here by myself, with my husband, & with our entire family. A great experience each & every time. The flavors are so savory. It’s fun to go with several people so that you can share a little of everything. Usually a good idea to get reservations in advance, particularly on the weekends. Pay parking lot next door.
We had occasion to dine here while on a weekend getaway to Baltimore. Staying in Mount Vernon we tried to look for the best of the best to fill our long weekend. Seeing the Helmand come highly rated and never having tried Afghan cuisine before we were intrigued. The restaurant didn't disappoint. At first when we entered it looked like the restaurant wasn't full, but that was deceptive as we merely entered the corridor where single tables are lined up in a row. Around the corner we entered the spacious dining room and were given a seat near the windows to appreciate the ambiance of the whole restaurant while enjoying the outdoor views of the sunset. From the beginning, our waiter team was courteous and professional. The wine, beer, cocktail, and non-alcoholic beverage selection was excellent. Try the Riesling from Australia, it really complements the spices of the meal to follow! The appetizers and main courses were extremely well done, expertly spiced, presented simply but with impeccable precision. After dinner the desserts were an added surprise. Who knew that goat cheese would add such depth to a cheesecake and that a touch of pomegranate syrup would elevate it to five-star class? While the restaurant was a bit loud as it began to get crowded, I never couldn't hear my dinner companions nor was others' conversation intrusive, even those sat right next to us. Overall, if you're looking for authentic cuisine and a great atmosphere and have time to spend in Mount Vernon, give The Helmand a try!!
The Helmand is a true gem in Baltimore. The food is consistently excellent, but the lamb dishes in particular are on another level — tender, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. You can tell a lot of care goes into every plate. On top of that, the service here is some of the best in the city. The staff strikes the perfect balance: attentive, professional, and warm, without ever hovering or rushing you. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel genuinely welcomed every time. Whether you're a regular or visiting for the first time, The Helmand delivers a memorable dining experience.
We came for dinner on a Sunday, it was our first time there and our first time having Afghan food. It was a 10/10 experience for us. All the dishes were flavorful and the portions were very generous. The lamb was so tender we didn’t need a knife to cut it. Together we had a shared appetizer, one entree each, and we shared desserts. Each one of the dish was exceptional. All the waiters were very kind and attentive. Parking was easy to find. We can’t wait to come back!
My first Afghani dining experience, but wow! So focused on their customers! Unique dishes rich in flavor but not in price. From wine to ice cream, we enjoyed it all. And I was given a special treat for my birthday 😊
Excellent food and attentive service. We arrived late for our reservation and called ahead—staff were very gracious and still able to accommodate us, which we truly appreciated. Our order came out impressively fast (everything at once, within about 10 minutes). That said, the evening felt a bit rushed toward the end; around 10:00 pm the dining room lights were turned up, which made it feel like we were being nudged to leave. Overall a great meal, just a slightly abrupt close to an otherwise wonderful experience.
Clean, well lit, friendly and knowledgeable servers. Wonderful vegetarian/vegan options. Good food, flavors well balanced, textures smooth, well prepared and beautifully presented. Really good rice!! If I liked cilantro, which was in an optional side dip, I would have loved every single bite. Great stuffed baklava and goatcheesecake dessert. Wine and beer menu too.
I love this restaurant. The food is amazing and authentic. Most of the food is halal but they have two items that are not halal (if I remember correctly, it’s the lamb options). Service is good the people are friendly. Try their ice cream, it’s delicious and different😋 Just to mention (not in a negative way but just saying) they have only two high chairs so I wouldn’t consider it as a children friendly place. I think the atmosphere makes it feel more like fine dining experience. If I have a someone visiting from overseas or from another state, I feel like I have to make them try the food of The Helmand. Had dinner from the helmand multiple times and I think I’ll continue to be a customer 🫶🏼
I came here for the first time on a work-related dinner. I had always heard about the famous Helmand restaurant, so I was very excited to finally enjoy the cuisine. I have to say I was not disappointed. I do not recall the appetizers that we had, but many options were delicious. For my main meal, I had the kabuki pallow, which was amazing! I love the rice mixed with raisins and carrots, and the lamb was very tender and delicious. The bread that comes with the meal was not my favorite, but the main dish more than made up for it. I would recommend this restaurant for sure.
1st experience eating at a Middle Eastern restaurant. Good experience. Staff was helpful. Thanks Modesto! Lovely table settings. Clean restroom. Drinks can be stronger. We're adults. 🙂Lamb was juicy & tender. Did not like the green cilantro sauce, it's an overpowering cilantro taste. Bread & ravioli appetizer was tasty. Rice & roasted veggies good. Pumpkin appetizers with yogurt reminds me of butternut squash😛. Spinach is also good.
Good food that fell just a little short of being perfect. I had the pumpkin appetizer "Kaddo Borwani" which was very unique. The pumpkin was quite sweet but not overdone and we'll cooked. Soft but not mushy. The garlic yogurt sauce on top is subtle but an interesting savory component that you might not expect from pumpkin. I got the lamb lawand for an appetizer and this was definitely the highlight of the night with four components plated separately. The rice was well seasoned and quite delicious but there were some crunchy overcooked bits that I could have done without. The lime mint sauce was fantastic and amazing. The lamb stew with mushrooms was quite nice. The spinach side "sabzy" was well cooked but the flavor profile wasn't quite what I liked so used the lamb sauce to complement it. The special ice cream dessert with cardamom and dates, mangoes was not as impressive as some reviewers pointed out and I would personally skip that. Finally the staff were extremely busy but the water refills were extremely prompt and dirty dishes did not sit around on the table for long. Ordering however was quite delayed and could have been more prompt. Overall decor is nice albeit extremely dim.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3.3/5 stars We visited The Helmand on a Thursday night and were surprised to find it almost completely empty. Just two other diners were in the entire restaurant, which gave it a strange, somewhat lifeless vibe for a place that gets so much hype online. The decor feels a bit outdated, and honestly, they could probably use some marketing help to get more people through the door. It really didn’t feel like a spot that’s supposed to be one of Baltimore’s most famous Afghan restaurants. That said, the service was excellent. The servers were super attentive, always checking on us and refilling our water without us having to ask. They were polite and knowledgeable about the menu. The food itself was… fine. A lot of the menu revolves around lamb, which was cooked well enough but didn’t blow us away. Flavors were decent, but nothing stood out as particularly memorable. It’s the sort of meal where you finish full and satisfied but not raving about it afterward. We didn’t try any of the wine or coffee, so can’t comment on those, but the prices were fair for the amount of food we got. Overall, it was a solid experience, but I’m just not sure it deserves the level of hype it gets online. Tasty, but not amazing. If you’re curious about Afghan food or just want something different, it’s worth trying at least once, but don’t go in expecting to be completely wowed.
This restaurant has gone downhill since the original owner died, which is a shame because this place was such a historic and iconic staple for the DMV Afghan diaspora. I’ve been to this restaurant in the past and always had an incredible experience. Now, the food is not authentic, the portions for some dishes are ridiculously small, and the atmosphere feels cheapened (they had paper tablecloths on the tables). The mantu appetizer only came with just a single piece of mantu. I’ve never seen that before in any Afghan restaurant I’ve been to. Most restaurants give at least 3-4 pieces. Also, the mantu was served on a plate of dal (lentils). That’s not how authentic mantu is made in Afghan culture at all. The chicken was very good, but the rice and dips really tasted like a terrible mockery/knock off of South Asian cuisine rather than authentic Afghan cuisine, which is supposed to taste more like a blend of West and Central Asian food usually. The firnee did not taste authentic at all. The pudding had no flavor and it was missing crushed pistachios—which is one of the most key ingredients for firnee. However, the falooda ice cream did taste good. Overall, this place isn’t terrible, but it’s not authentic, and you’d be much better off by going to DC or northern Virginia for Afghan food instead. This place just isn’t it anymore.
Attentive service and nice ambience. The organization of the restaurant was a bit cramped, we were so close to the tables next to us that we were practically eating with them. The food got my partner sick, but I got lucky and felt fine. The food tasted average.
Food - Ok Service - Poor Find somewhere else if you would like to have a better dining experience. My server always has one hand in the pants' pocket, keep heel slip outside of the shoes, throwing around the menu, silverware, and the bill. I'd spend the time and money at Subway for a better meal.
We ordered the Zardalo Challow and Mantow. Our food literally came within 2 minutes of ordering, it came literally with bread and butter. Felt like microwaved food and the meat inside the mantow was awfully dry. We couldn’t say anything to the servers because its not their fault but the owners need to do better for the food quality!!
I've been to this place before and it was a great experience, but yesterday we had a terrible waiter! Violent! From how he served the food to how he presented the bill, he was unpleasant and awful. He ruined the dining experience.
