Chicken Fried Deer Steak anyone? Yes, please. Took a drive to Bay City this evening (from Galveston) to spend time with my cousin who has been working in the area (he's from LA). Highly recommend The Fat Grass Restaurant and Bar. Excellent all the way around! He had the Red Fish, my husband had the meatloaf. We loved the meal, desserts, atmosphere. Pleasant surprise and we will visit again if ever that way.

We didn't go for food (but everyone I was with says the food is Amazing) this place transform's from a nice sit down restaurant into an awesome bar. The staff was friendly and the drinks are decently priced (and made well 😉). This place is definitely worth checking out.

Nice atmosphere, friendly and prompt service, we ordered the mozzarella tower and it was served with marinara sauce and ranch. Both were good, the mozzarella was crusted and flavorful. However it was so large that the center of the mozzarella was still a little cool. We ordered the Reuben sandwich and I got the kettle chips while my wife got the sweet potatoes fries. Both were tasty, with the chips having a wonderful crunch. The sandwich satisfied perfectly and I look forward to going back again.

One of the best places in town to get some food and drink, the atmosphere is great and the service is on point. They have live music sometimes as well. The food is the Main point though. I have been there probably 100 times and they never disappoint. The Fatgrass Ribeye is the go to. Little pricey but completely worth it.

Always chef prepared food and great service. A little on pricey side for me to go as much as I’d like, but the food is definitely worth it. You do get what you pay for and it’s quality. Not a complaint by any means though. Overall 5-star for me in all areas.

Great service and even better food!

My husband and I had meetings in Bay City for our insurance company and came across this restaurant. As business owners, we know how important reviews can be for a business. We would highly recommend this restaurant. The food is awesome, service great, and the ambience is worth coming back to. The fried pickle spears are the best fried pickles we have ever had, so I hope they do not mind me trying them at home. We appreciate great food and service...thank you.

We are regulars at the Fat Grass and have shared many memories here. The food is consistently good and the prices have remained the same. While as regulars, we wish the menu would rotate; the nightly specials are always worth taking a look at. The battered portobello, calamari, and blue nachos are favorite starters; the salads are fun and original; the steaks and fish entrees are great; and the desserts are pretty good across the board, if you get that far. Drinks are great and the wine-by-the-glass is a. Enter-than-expected selection. Overall, I'd say this is by far the best restaurant in Bay City and the chefs seem to have passion in their expertise. Come here for the memory, and understand that the restaurant does a great job of providing jobs to locals trying to become a great foundation within the service industry.

Had a super good experience here for a late afternoon lunch with business partners. Nice vibes & Matagorda County courthouse views. The Fat Grass burger was perfect. Friends loved the Cajun shrimp pasta & boneless buffalo wings! Can’t go wrong with the fried pickle spears appetizer & a margarita! Thank you!

The only problem was that we were at a group meeting, and unfortunately, there were 1 or 2 voices that were high pitch, and we could hear their voices in the meeting room. The food was wonderful! Below you don't list fried shrimp which was perfect.

Rating a solid 5*. We met another couple today for a late lunch. They came from Victoria, us from League City. This restaurant was chosen because of the building coolness so we gave it a try. We all had a really good time there. The food was excellent, restaurant very clean, service was perfect, and we loved the building. Problem is, we wish you were closer than 65 miles away! We will however stop in again when in the area. By the way, do you make your own sauerkraut? My wife and I are convinced you do because nowhere in the world have we seen it made this way other than by hand. She loved her Ruben.

Excellent food and service. We had the bacon wrapped jalapenos and lobster cakes as appetizers. The redfish on half shell and the chipotle chicken burger as the meal. Everything was cooked very well and it tasted great. The waiter Shane was very attentive, warm, and knowledgeable. It was a great first impression and we are looking for to the next visit.

Great food, great drinks, and a great vibe!

I had the Mahi Thermador, it was so good! Whatever sauce they baked it in was fabulous—creamy, cheesy in the best way, and perfectly seasoned. They have a nice patio area if the weather is good.

We stopped because we were driving through town. It was amazing! We had the crab cake appetizer and the sauce was awesome! We had the Mahi for the entree the sauce was so good we about licked the plate. We had our dog with us so we sat outside. Service was great! If your in town stop by you won’t regret it!

The Cajun Seafood Pasta...oh mannnn....delicious! And the White Chocolate Raspberry Creme Brulé...next level! A must visit while in Bay City. I highly recommend this place.

Service was great and food was great! I had the lemon artichoke chicken, and it came with grilled tomatoes and basil pesto fettuccine noodles. It was good but lacked salt. For salad, I had the field salad that comes with goat cheese and a pineapple vinaigrette. WOWZA. One of the best salads I've had. My husband had the chicken fried deer steak and he gives it a 7.5/10. Lacked salt but the sides were perfect.

One of the best places to go have a meal in Bay City. Food was excellent, atmosphere was good, service was good. We come in after work with work clothes on and still got to sit down and eat. They have a bar side, white table cloth side and outdoor patio for all sorts of people. Definitely recommend. Prices are perfect for the food portions.

The food was excellent so do not let my review take away because it was an excellent experience. My ribeye was a little fattier than I prefer, but that could be me and yes, I choose ribeye because it has some fat. Joe, behind the bar was stellar. Great drinks, great suggestions on meal and owned up to the secret menu which I heard about. Great experience all around. Sorry steak was a 4.5 out of 5 just because of the fat content. Try this place…. It was fun.

An unexpected to stop here for lunch and we were rewarded with an exceptional meal. The resturant is located in the historic area of town in a very quaint building that's tastfully decorated. I had the avocado toast which was an explosion of perfectly matched flavors. I hope to pass through Bay City again someday to try another delicious meal at Fatgrass.

What an amazing culinary experience. I am not sure what is the best dish. The tuna tar tar appetizer was beyond any expectations. The chicken covered in artichoke cream sauce with pesto pasta an absolute if you like comfort food. Cobb salad and tuna steak with BBQ wings did not disappoint. Culinary delight to be remembered and recommended for years to come. Desserts must have include blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream, coffee brownie and lovely cheesecake

The food was very good.. the green Chile burger was so good.. the bread was so soft sweet potatoes waffles fries.. Meat loaf was delicious. Beer was cold and crisp. Five star for me.

Tomato soup was a bisque and really good, the Classic Club was lacking on the bacon, like barely and it's my favorite part of a Club. The fries were very crunchy yet tender inside.

Valeri was a very nice and informative young lady. Offered good suggestions on beer and menu selections. Tuna tartar was terrific. Seasonal craft draft beer was an unexpected pleasure in a small town pub. Go there!

If there isn't a chef here I'd be surprised; the meatloaf my wife and I shared was so tender it didn't need a knife to cut and had a slightly spicy sauce that made it marvelous. The accompanying "mashers" were equally delectable with green beans on the side. The waitress graciously offered to split into two meals and was courteous, attentive, and prompt. Recommend a visit when in Bay City Texas.

Fansiest bar/restaurant in Bay City. The establishment is very clean and doesn't have all the loud music with obnoxious drunk people. The food is very good with the Tuna tar-tar being the absolute favorite and is to die for. There's alot of food options and I hear they actually have a chef which is pretty cool for a small town. The prices are on the higher end for bay city but somewhat reasonable. The service, isn't the best and I find that you often have to flag the waiter or go to the bar to get a drink. Other then that, this is a quality restaurant with a nice indoor/outdoor vibe!

The food deserves 5 stars at least SAM'S BBQBurger does... But the restaurant/bar itself is 3 at best... let's start with dining outside: very pretty but if they are gonna have these huge plants behind the chairs they have to trim them! Also the waiter visited our table twice while we were out there we kinda felt forgotten. This happens EVERY time we are seated outside. Dining inside:they have a HUGE bar and it's beautiful but they have no space for tables sans one row of 4 cramped 4seat tables and 3 2seat booths the very rarely open up the large dining room and when they do it's the same as outside- you're forgotten. The waiter are always very friendly but you will never see the same waiter on any other visit to the restaurant.

The food was pretty good and the 1$ mimosas were great. I was disappointed in the service though. Im not sure if maybe our waitress was just having a rough day. I had read a review about the ceviche but I didn't see it on the menu. Our waitress just didn't come around enough and when she did it seemed like she just wanted us to hurry up and say what we wanted so she could leave. I had to get up and go to the bar at one point for a drink cause we were quite thirsty and had no clue where she was. All in all I would go back and hopefully the service will be better next time! 🙂

The food at Fat Grass was good. We had the stuffed pablano and the Mahi. We also had the ceviche for an appetizer, again the food was good, but the service was incredibly slow. We were seated for 7 to 10 minutes before our drink orders were taken. Once we received our check we noticed charges for cocktails that we didn't order, receive, or consume. Our server did correct that error with graciousness. 3.5 stars would be a more accurate rating.

Food was good, service was great! Atmosphere was excellent with one stunning exception. It smelled like it had been mopped with a soured mop. For those of you not familiar with food service work it’s an almost indescribable however distinct odor. Not overpowering, but unpleasant. It faded into the background quickly however....

Had an excellent lunch here with some co-workers, always love the unique burgers, and local food options. We were seated next to the door and there seemed to be a house fly problem which made the experience less than ideal. I will be returning soon though to enjoy this local flavor!

Just visiting Bay City for a weekend, we chose this place for dinner and had a very nice time. Good atmosphere, the service was very good and the food was pretty good too. Calamari was a little bit too crunchy for us but it was tasty. Lobster cakes were cooked perfectly and had great texture. They could have used a bit more lobster meat to increase the lobster flavor. The meatloaf dinner was excellent 👌🏻 For cocktails we enjoyed the strawberry mule and a gin and lemon drink. If in town again we would go back to try some of the other dishes.

A bit overpriced, but food is good, atmosphere is good in the day and evenings! Drinks are really pricy, but it's one of only a few bar and grills that are worth calling both. Update 6/2017. Crab cakes are ok. Pic of fish tacos. Fish is fried in fish tacos. Underwhelming. Salad was not as fresh as I'd like. Still 4 stars, but barely.

Place was nice and clean. My little girl enjoyed the small fish pond and waterfall. Monte Cristo was very good. The wings were not very good. Waiter was very friendly but apparently a big top had sat down right before my party of three so food took nearly 45 minutes to arrive but we were outside and enjoying the breeze so it wasn't a rush.

Love the food here. And the staff is great - super attentive. Parking can be tricky if you don't know how to parallel. Sweet location. Whole place feels like old money...like the grandchildren of cattle barons and oil big wigs would eat here.

Hamburger was delicious! The Chicken Alfredo was less than desirable. It could be we showed up close to closing as we thought the restaurant stayed open as late as the bar...

Had an issue with my meal, small thing that happens occasionally at most restaurants, the staff was very professional, quick service and handled it very well. The chicken was crispy, the sauce was a little thick, but had pretty nice flavor. I asked the waiter for a recommendation and he chose the artichoke chicken. The dinner was a 4.5. service was 5. Where they got 4 comes from the dessert, presentation looked great but it was not great, very thick, and kind of dry. I liked the overall atmosphere, very clean and the bar was beautifully done wood work. Will come back.

Everything we ordered was prepared with great care and had beautiful presentation. It also tasted very good. I had sirloin which came with a very interesting wine reduction with something that made it taste sour and that was actually very good combination. The green beans came tightly wrapped in bacon and it not only looked nice and prepared with great care, but also tasted great.

Despite great good and good service previously, we walked in, told the bar tender (or server behind the bar at the time) that we'd like to sit outside, have a few drinks and have dinner. He said go ahead and sit anywhere, someone will be with U shortly. We sat in the middle of the out door patio at a picnic table. We were looking at menus when the server comes out, walks pass us and tends to another table. A min later a different server comes out, tends to another table and goes back inside. At that point we walked out. Ppl sitting outside are not "valued" as much as customers sitting outside. We chose fat grass for the clean environment and being able to smoke outside while drinking or dining. But expect to have to go inside to make all Ur orders :/

The food was good. Our waitress was not especially attentive. The bread was so dry it seemed like it was stale so they toasted it for way too long. I tried one piece, it tore up my mouth and I thought I might break a tooth. I like a good sourdough? But I want it to be soft on the inside. I would like to see a dinner salad for a plate that cost $25, house salads dont cost that much to make.

This hurts my carb loving heart to do... but this restaurant has the food of a 5 and the service of a 2.5... the sad truth is Fat Grass gets most things right. Just to lose favor on the simple things. They have AMAZING bread they set on the table... but they never have any made.. the last time I was there in the middle of a slow lunch day they even told me they needed to unfreeze more. Which is shocking considering I thought it was eating on point baked the same day goodness. If it's just frozen bread for Christ sakes you shouldn't run out. It's lunch time! Make enough. Other than that you'll also find most the staff seems to have forgotten that they work there. Fairly lazy.. this may be more of a good bar hangout than a lunch spot. I'm not sure.

Food was great, service left a little to be desired. All employees gathered around the bar, chatting, foul language from employees and customers. Air conditioning was blowing extremely hard and fast, ceiling fan on high. Mentioned to our waitress she just laughed, said I'm hot. Seemed like a lot of buddy buddy going on.

I went with a coworker for lunch. We left court and walked right across the street, very convenient. I really liked the atmosphere there, very relaxing after being in court all morning. We went a bit after 11am and it was nearly empty, guess we beat the lunch hour crowd. I ordered an advacodo burger with sweet potatoe fries which was pretty good. My coworker ordered boneless wings and fries. She didn't like the wings; said she's had better. Overall though it was decent. And waiter was friendly.

I had the club sandwich and fries, It was ok it wont be on the top of my list to order next time. But Im willing to try something different next time. It was first time there.

so with this they have unseasoned food so if you have covid and don’t have taste you’ll love it here. Had coworkers come here after work about 5 we all ordered a lil bit of everything steak taste like they soaked it in bbq sauce the fried pickles where the best thing besides the MARKET PRICED WINGS which is 13.99$ for 6 wings medium bone in size they where good but not good enough to charge so much service was slow but I guess it came with the cook eating two servings of wings before mine came out steaming hot so no complaints the wings where the best seasoned thing besides the fried pickles and a friend had a burger he said was good but every thing else 👎🏾we drank a lot and was hungry I still went on to eat a salad from and a Panera Mac and cheese from Walmart servings where in my words skeet

Nice bar, which is where we were seated(Astros game was on so YAY) Server was OK but never once smiled (not the birthday experience one wants) the calamari and green beans were excellent! The rest of the dinner was mediocre at best. Kinda pricey for a less than desirable evening out.

Food was excellent, service at noon not so much, and they weren't even that busy. I had the chipotle chicken sandwich with fries. Server was pleasant, but she took a while to take our drink order, longer than usual to take the food order and quite a while receive bread, and we had to flag her down to refill water. Food here is always so good I hate to leave a mediocre review but the service really dragged down the experience this time. Don't hesitate to try it, but don't expect to make it in and out in under an hour at lunchtime.

I ordered the bacon wrapped jalapenos and calamari for appetizers, the Ahi tuna steak for main course and the bread pudding for dessert. The food was amazing. The bread pudding could've came with a little more ice cream. The service was terrible. The wait time between ordering the courses was way too long for the few customers that were in there. If they adjust their service schedule I would have rated a 5 star.

So I wanted to leave a review for this place because I live locally and had been told by many people to try out this place. I will say the atmosphere was decent and was pretty chill. My biggest gripe with this place was that after we ordered our entrees, our waiter disappeared out the patio exit and was gone for a hot minute. We sat close enough to the bar to overhear the owner/manager telling someone to grab some chips at the store so we put two and two together and realized our waiter took a trip down the road to grab chips and soda while he had us at a table. That's extremely unprofessional. One of the owners who was drinking at the bar when i asked where our waiter went he was like oh to the restroom and laughed and said something to the line of " Dang he had one job". I had to go up to the bar to get a refill on our drinks. He then came in 5 -10 mins after our food arrived with a 12 pack of soda and, of course, a bag of snacks. We ordered the club sandwich and Turkey sandwhich, which tasted ok it wasnt alot of food for the price, and the onion rings were doughy. Also, our appetizer we ordered was the calamari, and it was like one huge ball of fried batter was all stuck together. Needless to say, this wasn't a great first impression, in my opinion, not sold on whether we would dine here again.

We went on Friday, 3-8-2024, in the evening around 7 pm. It was just ok. The atmosphere was chill. There is a patio area outside. We sat at a booth towards the back. Which was totally ripped and cracked. Was that part of the decor (let's just say maybe). Anywho, I ordered a mojito drink. Weirdest flavor. I didn't even finish it. Check the video. When i left, it was halfway. It's too bad because it at least "looked pretty" the flavor wasn't there at all. Work on that bartender person. Staff was friendly, the food looked pretty, flavor wise, it was pretty bland. Idk. It just seemed like everything was pretty, just not flavorful at all. Gordon Ramsey would certainly say worse. My steak I ordered was my usual medium well, that steak was drier than who knows what. I'm glad it came with that topping on it to help give moisture back into that piece of meat. The mashed potatoes. Again, it looked super appetizing and lacked flavor. They get points for sure for making food looking good. It's when you eat it that the disappointment sets in. The only thing on my plate that was tasty was the greens. I mean, it was food. I ate it. It served its purpose. But who cooks the meals there? Do they taste the food before it goes out? Spent $100 there. That was me tipping $20 to my waiter. (Im great like that). It's definitely not worth those prices, LOL! $29 for my steak meal. Not for the hockey puck they served me. Owner, check in with your cooks. Is it complacency? Who knows??🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Food was good. Service, my God, really bad. Expecting dinning room meal. Walked in, waited at least one minute. No response from anyone. Would have been longer. Finally went to the bartender & said I'd like dinner, ordered a drink & sat at table in the bar. I was never offered table in dining room. Wasn't expecting meal in noisy bar room. Waited 25 minutes for waitress. Place had 6 people at a table. Excuse was shift change. I travel extensively & have some comparisons. I could go on about the entire meal experience with the service staff but needless to say I'm disappointed with Fat Grass service. Wait staff needs coaching on service procedure. I won't go back to Fat Grass. Management & waitress staff have become too complacent to provide good service to customers.

The food here isn't as good as I thought it would be. The menu is unique, which is nice for a change. I ordered the tomato basil soup and a salad, but let down when there was no basil flavor in the soup. The salad was a lot better. The atmosphere is nice with a large bar and patio.

Had wonderful time but either not enough staff working, or something they were overwhelmed with amount if people and couldn't keep up. Our waitress outside was excellent I wish had tipped her more she worked hard and effienct. Inside we had not even received any eye contact after 25 min! Bar was littered with empties there either was not enough experience or not enough staff.

Honestly I didn't like and niether did my fiance. We went for my birthday. He ordered a steak at this steak house. He couldn't finish it due to the awful sauce the poured all over it. A steak house should have a good steak without the sauce. I ordered halibut with risotto. Halibut was okay slightly bland and the risotto was over cooked.

Run of the mill mediocre restraunt that is trying to be upscale. This was rated as either the #1 or #2 restraunt depending on the site, and I was VERY disappointed. I even tossed the leftovers instead of keeping them. The service was good, once I was seated. The food was way overpriced for the quality. I ordered 2 Dos Equis draft beers (dressed), the lobster and rice crab cakes ($11), and the chicken fried deer steak ($20). The beers were the best part, although they were only 16oz. The lobster and rice crab cakes were decent, but about 85% rice to 15% lobster. The citrus sauce did brighten up the taste. The deer steak was a major letdown. The batter tasted of only flour, the gravy was bland, the mashed potatoes reminded me of a school lunch (complete with the shape of the scooper), and the deer steak was pounded to 1/8th inch thick and still chewy. The atmosphere was nice enough for a dive restraunt, but it was like trying to call the set of Cheers a fancy restraunt.

First and last time here. I always hate to give a bad review food was good but service was just bad. Our waitress acted like it was a chore to wait on us. Our drink order and food order was wrong. Had to ask for everything salt, sauces, to fix our order, to check on us, she kept forgetting everything what was the special and when asked what was in a drink she forgot them never checked for me. Overpriced for certain items!! Atmosphere was good. Sad - hate to see a restaurant that could do well not!!

My lady found a hair in her food and the server didn't really care just asked if I still wanted or not. And to begin with I should have just stay out they look at us as if we didn't belong there . And the food was over priced for cold . Never again will we go in there .I could go on on my experience but I'd say if your Hispanic stay away not very welcoming to our race

The hours at this place are deceptive. It states that they're open til 2 AM, but the kitchen closes much earlier. I found this out after arriving at 11 PM and the rude girl working the door kept stating "Twelve Dollars" because the place had a cover charge. I asked what the cover charge was for, and she repeated, "Twelve Dollars". I stated that I wanted to sit at the restaurant and order food and not watch the band playing, and she laughed and said the kitchen was closed already. Not sure when the restaurant is actually open, but I won't be returning to find out.

Cocktails were atrocious. Ordered Whisky Sour with egg white and got a pre-mixed sugary abomination that was undrinkable. Then ordered a Moscow mule as that's hard to mess up but they did anyhow. To top it all off I waited 90min for my Sandwich. After asking about it six times and constant "it's just coming up", I finally canceled the order.

Went to Fat Grass for an early dinner today. I would rate the food but we were never served, in fact after about 5 minutes, no one came to our table to take our drink order or give us a menu. Empty restaurant with at least four wait staff at the bar and we were totally ignored. So we walked out and went to K-2 Steak House where we were greeted by the hostess and had a delicious steak dinner. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON SUCH RUDE WAIT STAFF.

I had to pay almost $24 for a Malibu with pineapple juice. In addition, the waiters increased the tip significantly and took advantage of my situation, even though I had said on the spot that the bill couldn't be right

NEVER AGAIN!!! We called in an order. We asked if we could substitute fries with a side salad. We were told yes. We asked if we could substitute soup for fries we were told yes. Well...we were not only charged the regular price, we were also charged $3.00 extra for EACH side salad and our 1 soup. The person taking the order asked if we would like that soup to be French onion. I told her yes. We got tomato basil. The picture is of their field greens salad. 13.99. It was supposed to be a meal for one of our family members. It was barely bigger than a side salad. BEST part of the whole experience...the person on the phone kept calling me "Sir" even after I said I am a woman🤬 $91 for 4 burgers and 2 salads. No drinks. We won't be returning!

Fairly often regulars, since we moved to the area. My wife called to order 2 orders of chicken Alfredo for pickup. Arrived and hostess stated the price for 1, looked over and saw only one on the counter. After talking with the hostess and bearded fellow behind about the confusion they told me it would be 15-20 minutes before the 2nd would be ready. I expressed that I would like 2 fresh ones, since the first one would be 15-20 minutes colder. They agreed and so I went to grab a bottle of wine from specs. Returning, both on the table, so ready to grab the food and get home. The bearded fellow who explicitly agreed to two fresh ones, let me know they had both just come out. Imagine my surprise and frustration when I open both and notice several differences that make me believe they just tossed the initial one in a frying pan and just rewarmed it. The chicken in the fresh was organized with the slices arrayed on top of the pasta while the initial had the chicken broken up and mixed in with the pasta. Further the initials pasta had strong black searing marks. Last, the consistency of the Alfredo sauce was different, with the initial having a thicker consistency. If they were prepared together, I certainly would have expected them to look alike in presentation and appearance, so one could surmise they might not have been. While I'm disappointed in the failure to receive the order right, and the subsequent failure for two fresh ones; I am most dismayed with the bold lie to my face about them being fresh and insistence on the pick-up. Not sure if management condones these practices but certainly disappointing from a place that normally strives for class.

Wanted to charge me $10 at the door they said for the band. It wasn't no band. It was some dude performing solo. He couldn't carry a tune if he life was depending on it. I told them that my Dog can sing and carry a tune any day better than the guy they were trying to charge $10 charge for...

Bacon wrapped green beans. Green beans not cooked and just look at the bacon. 100% raw. Steak cooked from frozen and can’t even chew it.

Definitely not what it used to be. My first two times going there was really good. Excellent food and excellent service. This time around it was the opposite on both ends. It took us around 45 minutes to get our food (for just two adults and a baby) and our waitress did not check up on us at hardly any point. There was no need for this considering that hardly anyone was there. Once our food came out it was cold and due to the lack of certain foods and sauces our food was horribly improvised. There was nothing good from our experience this time around
