Amazing food, friendly staff. Dined solo, ordered pony entree of country fried steak and it was the best decision I made that day. So delicious! Mash + gravy was full of flavor. Season your String beans & steak to taste and enjoy! Everything was freshly made.

First time here and it's definitely a little bit off the main road and hidden pretty well actually but... Don't sleep on this place! This is the best chicken fried steak that I've found in a minute, so tender i can cut it with a fork. The potatoes are fresh and have chunks of skin in them and the breaded okra is absolutely next level. Even the green beans are fresh and crisp. Make the drive! Amazing food! And the service was just as good as the food. I can't wait to go back and try the catfish and I also heard their burgers are fantastic as well. (The price is also very reasonable for the food received, this dinner was $17)

I came here & tried catfish for the first time. I have not had any catfish since so it is still the best catfish I have ever had. Blueberry pie was phenomenal! The muffin serviced with the plate was so good we had to go grab another before leaving. The baked potato was also cooked to perfection. The portions are huge so be prepared to nap afterwards. I'll definitely be trying the burger next time. Atmosphere was comfortable & the staff were very friendly.

Ate at the Hungry Horse for the 1st time yesterday. Had catfish, pinto beans, tater tots, & fried okra. My husband had chicken fried chicken and the same sides. Also comes with a muffin. All came out hot & delicious. Reminded me of Mom's country cooking. Only thing to remember is they are Not skimpy on their portions. Next time I will get the pony size. Great food. 👍

Definitely a we know everyone and down to earth atmosphere. Great service and personal attitudes. One of the best chicken salad sandwiches I've ever had! No nut or fruit just goodness! The side of fried mushrooms were so big I couldn't finish them! They could be a meal all of their own! Good sweet tea as well! Will definitely be going back with my family, which will go really smoothly with how the line style ordering is set up.

Utterly fantastic! I am a seasoned traveler and have not eaten better food anywhere, except breakt at Another Broken Egg. If these folks served breakfast it would probably be a run for the money!

If you're looking for a solid, home-cooked meal in Boerne, you can’t beat The Hungry Horse. I stopped in for lunch and ordered the Pony-sized Chicken Fried Steak with Homestyle Fries and Mac and Cheese. ​The 'Pony' size was actually the perfect portion for lunch—it gave me that classic Texas comfort food fix without being overwhelming. The steak was seasoned well and had a great crunch, the mac and cheese was creamy, and the fries were spot on. It’s a great, friendly atmosphere and the service was quick. I’ll definitely be coming back here next time I'm in town!

Boerne, TX !! Exactly what we were seeking - Texas bbq restaurant that served chicken fried steak and okra. Everything was tasty and the blueberry cobbler was devoured !! Very Texan and authentic country restaurant experience - highly recommended for locals and tourists alike - especially for foreigners seeking a Texas experience.

October 2025 I made it back to Hungry Horse restaurant in Boerne, Texas to try out the place. Our group entered, and were greeted by Marco (who was taking orders and manning the register). Marco was very patient with us and gave us our space to review the menu, and also answered our questions as they arose. Our orders covered the spectrum from catfish, chicken fried steak, house salad, and chopped sirloin. Each dish came with a choice of 3 sides. The food was prepared fresh, and ready within 20 minutes. The serving side are sizeable so choose you size of meal accordingly (pony, regular or large). Our orders were regular in size, with good helping of sides (veggies, etc.). Just know the food and sides have a "light" to non-existent seasoning. I expected this is done so that you can salt & pepper to your taste. Veggies are steamed, and I personally recommend requesting your gravy (white or brown) on the side. We enjoyed our visit and experience and hope you will too. July 2025 I was in the Boerne area, and decided I to see if the Hungry Horse restaurant open. Unfortunately they were not. Note, I have not eaten a one of these restaurants since they were in the San Antonio area many many years ago. Unfortunately, I've picked July. 4th as the day to stop in and try them out. I will note, that I did try and call before arriving, but there was no answering machine to pick up and tell me the place was closed. So, I took a chance to stop by. Thus, maybe next time when I'm in the Boerne area I'll be lucky enough and they'll be open. I rated the 3 stars because I don't believe in giving a place, especially a family owned business, one star for not being open on a holiday, and I don't believe in rating the place 5 stars either. So, I took the middle of the road for rating this time. I'll add more pictures when I revisit.

Food is mediocre at best. Portions are good, which they should be for the price. Cashier is a frowned face unhappy unwelcoming person. Other than her the staff seemed like down home people. $15.00 salad with no cheese. All the food is frozen or comes out of a 5 gallon bucket.

Seemed very promising when I read about it and arrived. Friendly service, and decent pricing for touristy area in Boerne, but it kinda went MEH quickly. I dont know how to feel about this... I finally found ONE OF THE BEST chicken fried steaks w tasty gravy, only to have all three, yes 3, sides be completely BLAND.. The corn and green beans tasted straight out of a can with no seasoning, and the mashed potatoes were dry and lacking flavor . Same for my wife's dish, SOME OF THE BEST MEATLOAF EVER (meatloafsandwich), but super bland fried potato slices with NO SEASONING. Kids mac n cheese was as boxed as you can get , but my son loved his burger, and it looked good. I don't know why so many restaurants are like this. Great entrées with horrible sides. I really hope they read this and make changes. You've got some great food there, but the sides ruin the whole experience. 🤷‍♂️

My family came into town on Sunday evening. We were excited to stop by this place for some good food. When we got there, the lady at the counter taking our order was so rude. She was very condescending with my elderly father and was not helpful in the ordering process. We were very appalled and taken back by her bad attitude towards us. That left us with a bad feeling, right away. When we got our food, most of the dishes weren’t very good and lacked flavor. The salad looked good and fresh though. Really saddened by this experience, as I wanted to love this place like others.

Party of 6. No one ate more than a couple of bites. Uncooked steak fingers, clumpy and cold gravy, and very old mac & cheese. The chicken fried steak is actually a hamburger patty and was greasy. I was the DJ for a wedding recently catered by Hungry Horse Restaurant and Catering, and unfortunately, many of us—including myself, the bride and groom, several guests, the venue staff, and the event coordinator—became sick shortly after eating the food that was served. While the staff was friendly and the presentation looked fine, the aftermath was concerning and disappointing. Food safety is critical for any event, especially weddings, and this experience caused a lot of discomfort and disruption for everyone involved. I hope the company reviews their food handling and preparation processes to ensure this doesn’t happen again at future events.
