Opinions de Hapa Sushi Grill & Sake Bar - Pearl St. Boulder Boulder
We enjoyed this place. Husband and I ate here for the first time and visited again towards the end of our trip. We enjoyed every dish we ordered. The service was always on point and great. Each dish is worth the try. The only thing inconsistency was the first time we ordered our sushi, they automatically came with wasabi. The second round of sushi we ordered didn’t have them on so maybe it was a mistake initially, but it didn’t bother us too much.
Sushi fusion done right. Highly recommend the “orgasm rolls” Deep fried sushi and other unique sushi combinations. Outdoor patio is in a great location and is primarily tucked away from the main sidewalk
The food was great. I highly recommend their specialty rolls and spicy miso soup.
Hapa Sushi Grill and Sake Bar did not disappoint. We made reservations and we were seated promptly at our reserved time. To our surprise they had a great happy hour selection so we ordered several items from that menu. The food was delicious as well as the sake. Our server was on top of it! We will definitely be back!
Great fusion with creative dishes (and names) and friendly service - it’s been nearly twenty years since the Pearl st location’s been opened, and Hapa continues to thrive, with good reason. The mix of Hawaiian, Japanese, and local cuisines gave the family a wide range to choose from (i.e. everyone found dishes they could love).
I recently visited Hapa for the first time, and I was not disappointed! The Multiple Orgasm roll, which includes cream cheese, salmon, and a drizzle of sweet soy, was absolutely delightful. We also enjoyed the crispy lava tofu, served with teriyaki sauce, broccolini, and ube mash, everything was delicious! And we wiped our plates clean. The service was prompt and friendly. I will definitely be returning!
I am at Hapa right now and I have never had better calamari. I have tried calamari all over the world, Europe, Asia and coast to coast in the United States and it is hands down the most incredible! The service here is also top notch! Just WOW
Awesome service. Delicious drinks like sake. Great sushi and good happy hour!!
Such a superb experience. I have been dinning at Hapa for years and it never disappoints. The ambience of the restaurant inside and outdoors is tranquil. I feel I tend to be a bit more picky about sushi, and Hapa has always exceeded my expectations of delicious sushi. My personal go-to roll is either the multiple orgasm or orgasm roll. Definitely worth trying out! I feel like the service is fair. The staff has always been welcoming. There have been occasions beverages didn't get refilled until after I've finished eating, which is tough when you're eating pretty spicy sushi! The staff may be spread thin though due to current shortage.
Our server, Savannah, was great. She was attentive and helpful. We split the beef teriyaki, and she's had the kitchen split the order on to 2 plates (so my picture shows half an order - plenty for one person), and it was very tasty. The menu bills their Hawaiian-style teriyaki sauce and it has a great flavor. The Hapa Roll (spicy tuna) was very fresh and had a nice texture.
Fun place for innovative sushi. One of our goto places on Pearl Street mall. Flavorful and interesting rolls. We have been here more than a dozen times and had only one minor anomaly, but even then they were super anxious to make things right. Staff is friendly and attentive, thanks for the great service Izzie!
Cocktails and food were on point- multi-org-roll was delish beyond delish
Fresh and tasty sushi 🍣 😋 Wonderful staff and great atmosphere, we'll be coming back for more. EDIT: Went back a few weeks later, and it's still great. Highly reccomend the mochi ice cream!
Hapa is always fun, vibrant, and the service is excellent. The array of food options satisfies my love of sushi and my husband's love of anything not sushi! He had the green curry bowl and I had a few specialty sushi rolls. Absolutely fabulous and the best spot to celebrate our anniversary! Thanks for a special evening! Hot Sake!
Great place and some of the best sushi around and the caviar is to die for. The wait was a little long but it was worth it the food was amazing the service was great and I would 100 percent recommend it.
Fresh sushi and great poke bowls. Loved the orgasm roll, but it was a bit filling. Wife loved the multiple orgasm (mostly for the fried pieces and cream cheese, but also double entendre intended) I'd recommend the pure sushi and sashimi route as all the cross ordering was a bit weird.
Thank you Hapa for another amazing meal. I have loved going to hapa, especially during happy hour on Pearl for almost 20 years. Their ramen is amazing too with the sake soaked boiled eggs, what a great touch. Thank you so much for supporting all of the Marshall Fire families with a gift card. We have so enjoyed it!
Exquisite sushi dining experience in Boulder! The sake options are limitless, and the sushi ranges from typical to extraordinary, with my personal favorites being the Multiple O and Spider rolls. The waitstaff were lovely, and the atmosphere was busy yet serene. We’ve dined here for both dine-in and take out, and every experience has been amazing.
My favorite sushi place in Boulder! They have awesome specials and happy hour. The sushi is top-notch but doesn't put a huge dent in your pockets. The menu is creative (check out the names of their rolls!) and some of their rolls combine ingredients I haven't seen before in sushi- but are delicious together. Totally recommend.
Absolutely delicious. I hadn't been to a Hapa's location in over 20 years, let alone this one ever, and it was just as good as I remember. Fresh ingredients, eclectic dishes and beautiful plate presentations. The service was excellent and even with a lot of families with children and some larger parties in the restaurant it was not noisy by any means. PS - Get the Multiple Orgasm roll.
Our favorite sushi spot in town. The new space is very bright and airy, beautiful and modern design. Absolutely amazing food - creative, savory flavors, the freshest high quality ingredients. Great, attentive and friendly staff. We usually come here for brunch on weekends and there are always tables available for walking in.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hapa Sushi Grill and Sake Bar – Pearl Street Mall We stopped in for a date and found the perfect mix of atmosphere, creativity, and flavor. Sitting outside under the glow of string lights while storm clouds rolled in set such a cozy, romantic vibe. The food was as fun as it was delicious. We tried some of their signature rolls—“The Big Kahuna” (yellowtail, salmon, tuna, jalapeño, and yuzu miso) and the “Booty Call Roll” topped with lobster and garlic sake butter—which were both show-stoppers. The playful menu names kept us smiling, and the flavors didn’t disappoint. We also loved the Magic Mushrooms appetizer—avocado wrapped in salmon with sweet soy—and the Chukka Seaweed Salad for something light and refreshing. Drinks were another highlight: a chilled sake paired beautifully with a vibrant cocktail (the Curious Margarita with strawberry, jalapeño, and smoky togarashi salt rim). They balanced the meal perfectly. The service was warm, the presentation was gorgeous, and the whole evening felt like an experience rather than just dinner. 💬 In short: creative rolls, great drinks, and an ambiance that makes even a rainy evening unforgettable. We’ll definitely be back.
Delicious teriyaki chicken and streamed rice. Nice atmosphere and friendly cashier. Located in the heart of downtown Boulder. Parking can be tricky.
Stopped by for an early dinner happy hour time. The food came out on time and was definitely delicious. We especially liked the appetizers and sushi. The Brownie dessert with ice cream was super fresh and delicious. We enjoyed our time sitting outdoors.
We had a wonderful birthday meal! The multiple ______ roll is delicious. All of the food is fresh and beautifully prepared. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive to every detail of our meal.
I’ve been eating regularly at Hapa for 25 years now, shout out to the OG sushi chef Ken who still crushes it there! Who remembers him serving the best rolls up in the Fox? I wanted to mention a server I’ve had a few times recently who is just so wonderful: Meena. She’s such a doll, and is a stellar server. She’s so patient and sweet with my kiddos, and is efficient and great at juggling the pace at Hapa. Some favorites that are always on repeat for us: wasabi tobiko with quail eggs, black salt tombo sashimi, spicy tuna crispy rice, XXX roll, ebi shumai, 24 karat roll. The quality of their food is always consistent and fresh, and the energy in the place is always spot on. Give their specials a try!
Happy Hour!! We stopped by for Happy Hour and had such a great experience! The staff were incredibly kind and patient with my kids one of whom has special needs and that made all the difference. Hapa made us feel comfortable and cared for. ☺️
Great selection! Friendly staff. Make a reservation on weekend nights. Lucky we made one as people were waiting when we walked in but were seated right away.
I had a great time with my daughter at Hapa! Our server Shadi was so friendly and helpful! I would definitely recommend Hapa for people looking for great food and a great atmosphere.
First time going there since they moved from the old location, I thought it had closed when went by but learned they opened a bigger spot down Pearl just a bit. As good as I remember and if you're in the mood for sushi in downtown Boulder, it's the place to go.
We had a great experience here! The happy hour was a great deal and the food is amazing. I recommend the tuna crispy rice and the asparagus tempura roll! We had a great server named Ryan who made sure our experience was to the max!
Making this restaurant our go-to spot! Our server, Rylee, was awesome! A few friends and I came in last week for dinner, and she was so helpful, kind, and genuinely cared about our questions. They have solid crispy rice, and I loved the shake sashimi.
This place was a great pick for a casual meal. Everything we ordered was flavorful and came out quickly. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable, and the service was smooth. Overall, a really enjoyable visit.
This is my favorite sushi place of all time. The sashimi salmon melts like butter in your mouth. The multiple orgasm is just that ..orgasmic to eat. Happy hour is a great time to visit. I love the new location too. Looking forward to going back as soon as possible!
We came to Hapa for our two year anniversary. We were impressed with the attentiveness of the staff and most of the rolls we tasted. Our table was not ready for our 8 pm reservation but they gave us a free bowl of Edamame once we were sat to make it up to us! It’s little things like that where you see how much a place cares about service and we are so grateful for their generosity !! The gyoza were fantastic and the sushi was excellent as well ! We enjoyed our experience here our waiter Trey was friendly and helpful even tho they were extremely busy. I would come here again.
Hapa is always a solid choice for sushi. It's not the "most amazing sushi ever", but it's tasty and fish is fresh. I wish they had a larger variety of options. A lot of their stuff has spicy tuna or some other spicy fish, rather than fresh fish not mixed with mayo. But, overall, it's a good spot!
Great sushi spot all things considered. Came here a couple times with friends, and we always have a good time, although it always ends up being quite expensive, even compared to other sushi spots in Boulder. Great alcohol selection, and we all got either japanese beer or sake which were all great. The portions tend to be big, and the sushi rolls themselves super tasty. Cool+practical little table for rolls is always a nice detail (see picture). Only a few downsides on our last visit. Food took a bit long to arrive. The deep-fried veggies we got were way too large -- felt like they just chopped whole peppers/etc in like 2 slices. The calamari were also slightly undercooked and were too soft. There was a waiter in training who was very inexperienced and spilled all over our table and forgot what we were saying seconds before. I felt bad for the waitress who had to babysit him, but at least he was apologetic. Anyway, seems like they had a chaotic day that time and the few issues must not be representative because the first time I visited it was all fine.
There's an interesting water feature that flows around the sushi bar and they also have outdoor seating. It was not too busy when I arrived and while I was the only one at the sushi bar the host sat me in the corner in a less desirable spot that didn't have a sushi board nor the water feature. No one sat there the whole time I was there which made that odd to me. The sushi was pretty tasty. I also got the tonkotsu ramen special. The bowl is huge. The broth is pretty good but not amazing. The noodles and meat were overcooked but still good with the broth. Sake and beer choices are good.
Service was a little slow but all together had such a great time. The Bonfire bowl is literally one of my most favorite things in the world to get and as usual it did not disappoint. We had less time than I would have hoped to eat as food took longer than expected but not anything to complain about or keep me from coming back.
I was impressed by their gluten free menu and options. My boyfriend tried a couple regular rolls and the tempura and we enjoyed everything we ordered! They do have outdoor seating but it was full when we stopped in. The parking garage nearby is free on the weekends!
UPDATE: I visited again on 8 Sep 2025 and had a wonderful time. The food was good and service was impeccable. Added new photos to this review. Still recommend this restaurant to everyone. ------------------------------------- My family tried this restaurant a while back without me and told me about their wonderful experiences and mentioned that they wanted me to try it. Being from Hawaii, I naturally thought the name of the restaurant was intriguing; not to mention, the term, "Hapa" has a special meaning to me. I was recently in Boulder so my daughter and I visited this restaurant on 3 Aug 2025. We arrived a little later than the normal dinner window so the restaurant wasn't busy at all which was perfect because I didn't feel like waiting for a table - yes, we were starving. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted and escorted to our table. After we sat down, we were provided with one of the best service a customer can have...courtesy of Savannah - she was extremely professional, attentive, friendly, and very efficient. All quality traits that every restaurant employee should emulate. In fact, prior to ordering our food, I looked at one of the dishes that were brought to our table and unfortunately, when I lifted one of the plates, it was dirty (see attached photo). I brought this to Savannah's attention and she immediately resolved the issue, following it with an apology. Though, I would hope in the future the kitchen staff would quality check their items before they make them available for servers to bring to the tables. Regardless, things happen and it was resolved. We ordered Miso Soup, Ginger Pork Gyoza, Vegetable Tempura, and Taro (Tuna) Poke for our appetizers; Hapa Roll, Statue of Liberty (SOL) Roll, and Beef Teriyaki Dinner for our main entrées; and Da Kine Punch and Hapa Draft for our drinks. The appetizers were good; the miso soup and tempura definitely stole the show for the appetizer round. The gyoza was good; however, I was shocked with how it was prepared...it didn't have as much crisp to it as you would get at a Japanese restaurant. The texture almost reminded me of a Chinese-style (pan seared) dumpling...but it was still pretty good; just not what I was hoping for. The SOL Roll was outstanding; I'm mainly an ahi tuna guy so I was taken back at how refreshing (and crisp) that roll was - that apple provided a whole new level to that roll. The Hapa Roll was ok; for some reason, the tuna didn't taste like it should have (I found it strange considering the Taro Poke was great). I know land-locked states are limited to how fresh a fish can be, but this one didn't taste fresh at all. I have never received bad ahi when I was in Hawaii (of course), and in Las Vegas (where I currently reside). I still finished it and it never made me sick afterwards so perhaps it was just my tastebuds? Also, the Beef Teriyaki was adequate; nothing to write home to Mom about...but it wasn't bad either. The restaurant was clean with very nice décor and a respectable amount of space; both interior and exterior. The restaurant's logo was fascinating which makes me wonder of the history behind picking that logo/character. The price-to-quantity/quality ratio was reasonable and I highly respect this business for their continued support to the active men and women of the Armed Forces, including its Veterans - thank you for that! Overall, I liked my experience here, as depicted in my 4-star rating. I can definitely see myself returning for another visit whenever I'm in the city again. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Amazing bar service. The mock cocktail was great and beer ok. Vegan. Sushi spot on! Wait time 15 Minutes while serving a great seaweed salad.
Only thing they didnt have was a sweet potato tempura roll. Always my go to but other wise they had a great selection of sushi rolls! Great variety of drinks! Awesome service!
The food was really good—especially at the downtown location (the kids’ noodles were excellent!). The only reason it’s not a full 5-star review is that they initially forgot our dessert, and we had to remind them. But to their credit, they made up for it by giving it to us for free.
Popular spot and it can get busy, but really nice atmosphere. Some rolls were super tasty, others more average, and desserts looked beautiful but could use a little extra care (the crème brûlée was served cold). Overall, I had a good time, though I’m not sure the quality matches the price enough for me to come back often.
Maybe I was just unlucky but I didn’t have the best experience this afternoon. The food was overall above average. My server did not leave a great impression. Being Hapa myself I was excited for the restaurant and expected the menu might stray just a little from typical Japanese recipes. I tried a couple normal things which were good and one signature maguro dish that while it looked beautiful I found it did not work at all for the taste of the dish for me. I don’t want to be too harsh on my server, maybe he was new, but he just didn’t seem present or like he cared. He spilled sauce on me without noticing. People make mistakes so I let it go. But then when cleaning my plates he needlessly/carelessly spilled quite a bit more sauce on the table. Later I saw him walking around with an empty but dirty server tray, holding it horizontal initially but then decided to just drop it down by his side vertically, spilling a LOT of dark sauce on the ground, leaving a sauce trail in his wake. It was in the outdoor area so maybe no big deal? I don’t know it seemed sloppy and wrong. Maybe I’m getting too worked up over sauce but this was distracting me from enjoying my experience. Finally I know this is me nitpicking and he didn’t grow up in a japanese household like me but maybe he could work on some of the pronunciation. It’s not “‘maj-ero” my dude. This I feel is a lot of little things but it did kind of add up to a soured experience for me. The other staff seemed very up to the task and the restaurant/environment was great.
i have had some decent meals here. It's never amazing, but serviceable. Tonight though I went and had dinner there during the happy hour. All of the dishes were really sub par. They tasted fishy, and unappetizing. We didn't finish any of them. Then afterward I felt really sick for a few hours. The drinks are good though and the service was good. I am going to avoid it from now on.
I ordered Katsu curry with chicken but they bought me a Katsu chicken instead. It was one of my favorite resturant in downtown but not coming anymore. The service was good thou.
Never again. Not only was service absolutely horrible from the second we walked in (we had reservations and it took 20 minutes just to get anybody to talk to us and to order water), but it never improved, and then we found this huge plastic tip in our dessert. Granted it was already comped because it was a birthday dessert, but they didn't even seem surprised and give us a few bucks off of our very expensive meals. I guess that's what snobby Boulder places can get away with.
We’ve enjoyed eating at Hapa for years, sometimes excellent, sometimes just ok, but had a bad experience this weekend when we went at 4pm with our children. The front host told me the waiting list was 1 hour; ok, so we waited with the kids just to find out when we were called that the only tables available were outside; inside was fully booked until 10 pm. Our children were now hungry, tired of waiting, the sun was going down, and wind was kicking up. Had I known we’d have to sit outside with them, I would not have waited and looked elsewhere. The host should have been clear when I put my name in that inside was booked and the only option would be outside, particularly in February when we clearly had children with us. We felt stuck since we’d waited, didn’t want to get on another list, and needed to feed the boys, so we decided to go ahead and eat, but after getting chilled, even with the outdoor heaters on (they really needed more), spending over $160 on dinner, and basically being miserable the whole time, it ended being one of the worst experiences we’ve had a hapa, much less anywhere else in town. The sushi 🍣 even started turning crusty and dry less than 10 minutes due to the cold breeze blowing across the table. If you go during the cold months, make sure it’s clear where you’re likely to be seated - personally I’d recommend skipping outside unless the weather is calm and warm and if you appreciate eating your food the way it was intended to be enjoyed. I think it’s going to be long time before I consider taking the family to hapa again after this last experience.
