Being mexican myself , I know what good mexican food taste like. And let me tell you , the food is delicious. The food is a step up from your typical mexican food. The margaritas are delicious , we had the delicious chicken bunuelos, tacos cochinita pibil, and the ribs . All was mouth watering food !!!! It is a must try in astoria !!!!!! Service was also great , must I add.
Oaxaca at its finest. We were tempted to put 4 stars because hostess wasn't accomodating and did not place us in another table away from entrance (we were shaking because of the coldness). However food was so good that we couldn't let situation influence rating.. definitely recommend it. Just make sure that on reservation you specify to be seated away from entrance(if weather is cold).
Everything at this restaurant is amazing. Taste fresh and def enjoy the creative dishes. The food comes pretty quick and the serving sizes are perfect And always end up bringing food home. My favorite drink is "Alma del sol" and can't be beat! Been here a few times now and everytime, the experience has been amazing. Staff is super friendly and always have great recommendations. The restaurant is beautiful and is perfect for any occasion, dates, family dinner or a weekly drink. Love this place.
Rural Oaxaca was our next stop for my birthday celebration! I was expecting to eat the typical Mexican dishes like enchiladas and tacos, and while they do serve these, they also serve dishes like short beef in mole sauce, esquites, fush stuffed with crab meat, shrimp and lobster, and many more. The story beef was divine!divide! The meat was fall off the bone tender and the mole sauce was rich, sweet yet tangy. My crew had the chicken enchiladas and the mixed seafood enchiladas which they couldn't stop eating. I ordered a side of exquites which is Mexican grilled corn slathered with creamy , cheese, lime-scented chili flecked sauce. The drinks were also tasty especially the hibiscus margarita is a must and the Alma Del Dol a fresh watermelon and casa noble reposado drink is pretty and refreshing! We're definitely going back!
Whoa, I really love Ruta! This spot has some of the best molé sauce I’ve ever had! Every dish at the table was beyond delightful. I had the chicken molé enchiladas, and my partner had the short ribs. I promise you’ll want seconds, but the portions are pretty big so maybe you’ll hold off. I will come back again! I need to try their coffee flan 😍🤤✨
Food is absolutely delicious! Finally Astoria has a good (fancy) Mexican spot! Food, drinks, music, service is always spot on. We’ve had most of the tacos-shrimp, steak and pork (pork has very generous portions). We’ve also had the special of the day (fish stuffed with crab meat, shrimp and lobster)- paired with a Spicy margarita- DIVINE! We always close our meal with their amazing Tres Leches that is perfectly moist! Definitely one of our favorite spots on Broadway!
Took a one hour ride all the way from Long Island based on a recommendation and this restaurant did not disappoint! The food was incredible and fresh and the service was fantastic. Can't say enough positive things about this restaurant! Make sure you leave room for dessert. Update 04/21/2022 I went to sister location in Patchogue. I can't say enough about the food and service. Everyone is treated like a "regular". It's like taking an hour vacation away from everything...right around the corner from you house while still feeling at home. 5 star authentic food. I highly recommend.
Attentive staff has you feeling as if you’ve been transported to San Augustin …and that is just the beginning. Lively authentic tunes (Sunday is a must!) -if they offer specials, I highly suggest you accept because the chef never ever disappoints. Casafortunas gave me flashbacks of Puerto Escondido; “delicious” doesn’t do it justice. Huatulco inspired cochinita tacos brought out my inner velociraptor -quickly devoured. Barely had room for the tiramisu (tira-mezcal) which was just wow. Wow. WOW. It’s not just hyperbole, the food is soooo good, and the service is on point. Arrive hungry and be prepared to feast.
Surprisingly Awesome food, very unique Oaxacan Taste, good size portions and very cool interior atmosphere, friendly staff that really make us feel welcomed. We tried the Mole in various plates... all amazing, freshly made Guacamole and a great variety of special drinks. Parking was a challenge so next time we will take the Metro or Uber. We will definitely come back for more!
I love the food here, the tacos are delicious but my favorite app I’ve had is the Ruta Nachos; probably the best I’ve had in all of my experiences at Mexican restaurants in nyc. I visited the Long Island location, there was a mariachi band, if you don’t really like loud music then avoid on nights like this.
Been here a lot of times and every visit turns so satisfied. Usually I struggle to find a nice place with authentic Mexican food, and Ruta Oaxaca exceeded my expectations! Food it’s mad delicious, and drinks as well. Everything feels so fresh, and the environment makes me feel like im back in Mexico. Plus, the staff always makes sure that you have a good experience every single time. Don’t hesitate to give them shot, trust me, you won’t regret. If I could I’ll give them 10 stars, but google doesn’t allow it, LOL.
Husband and i stopped in yesterday afternoon and the food and customer service was outstanding. We both had tlayuda and they were delicious. Husband had a very delicious steak and I had octopus, both dishes were really good. Coffee flan was delicious, this restaurant exceeded our expectations. Will definitely be back.
This place is probably one of the better Mexican cuisine places in Astoria. You get the vibe that it's a bit more fancy than your typical mom and pop taco shop but not overly upscale, definitely a good date spot. As others mentioned menu prices are a bit on the pricier side for what you get however the flavor of the food is worth the extra dime. I had the steak tacos which were very tender and savory, coupled with the Alma del sol cocktail which was extremely refreshing. Service overall was fairly good however could've been a bit more attentive especially on a not so busy night. That being said, great food can make up for slightly sub par service which is certainly the case here. I will definitely be returning.
Great interior setup. Good service. AMAZING FOOD. Salsa is delicious, ribs are melt off the bone, esquites have a great char finish on them. The salsa verde that comes with baby potatoes is out of this world but also spicy fyi. Crispy platanos were also great. I had the red sangria which had a good balance to it. All and all a well refined Mexican cuisine and new Astoria gem!
The tacos here were delicious and filling! My favorite were the cochinita tacos. The waiter was so nice! We asked him for sugar to add to our Arnold Palmer and he brought us tasty agave! Each table also gets complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was unique and flavorful. Only thing about the tacos were that they fall apart but they were loaded and they didn't skimp out on the meat.
Hands down one of a delicious Mexican cuisine restaurant that came in town. And this time it really brought it’s own spices. In love with their little crisp pollo dumpling that the chef sampled me. It was out of this world good, to me it had a unique mouth watering taste. Try it for yourselves. As well as the tacos, I mean it is Tuesday after all. Check out this gem because it gives me Mexico City vibes.
Great place, clean and the service excellent, I can recommend it 100%. Hand made tortillas 👌👌and the most important... food taste awesome!! There are many restaurants and trucks serving mexican food specially in Queens but to be honest just a few can be on the top five in NYC and Ruta Oaxaca is in my top 5.
Been wanting to try this place for a while and finally stopped in for brunch this past Sunday. The food was excellent - we got the shrimp flautas as an appetizer and then the mole enchiladas and chilaquiles (with chicken added) to split as our main dishes. They also had a great buy one, get one drink special and their sangria is fantastic. Service was quick and attentive as well. Will definitely be going back to try their other dishes.
Returned for lunch last Tuesday after about a year and a half away when we loved it last time. Cannot wait to return again! Emilio was once again our server, and again, no request too much. Carlos, the chef came out to meet us and could not have been more gracious, even gave us yet another amuse bouche of tortilla soup since we so enjoyed the one at start. The cocktails are unique and delicious, the taco deal for taco Tuesday is great, plus no problem to mix them vs so many other restaurants. Great guacamole and made fresh to order. The traditional mole is FAB and the chicken enchiladas with it had the most moist and tasty chicken. Substantial portion, so we shared! Modelo Negra on draft! Emilio and Carlos very kindly gave us a delicious churro bread pudding for dessert too! Cute and clean. Can't wait to return, wish was closer! Have already recommended to friends. Highly recommend!
The best lunch I've had in a long time occurred at this unassuming Mexican restaurant located in Astoria. From starting with the traditional margarita to ending with dessert everything was beyond expectations. The chips and salsa were very good but then the vegetarian empanadas really started to get this excellent culinary experience going. The star of the show came next, the beef short ribs in Oaxaca mole. The beef was wonderfully tender and flavorful but the mole took it to another level. To put it plainly it was the best mole I've ever had. The pretty and tasty dessert was the perfect finish.
My husband and I dined at Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine yesterday and we had a wonderful experience. The service was very friendly and warm. Every dish was delicious! I was especially impressed with my drink, Paloma En Cantarito, which has fresh grapefruit in it and was perfectly balanced. I think it is the best drink I’ve had in a while! We got the ceviche, esquites, the Pechuga & Mole Verde, and the Beef Short Ribs. Both entrees had mole and they were they were extremely flavorful and different. The mole in the beef dish was sweeter and smokier while the mole in the chicken dish was spicier and more herbal. We really enjoyed both dishes. We had the tres leches for dessert which was a great way to cap the meal. I would definitely recommend a visit here to anyone visiting Astoria!
Wow one of the best Mexican res in Astoria by far hands down ! So many of my friends have told me about this restaurant so I was very excited to give it a try ! Well they weren't lying everything was incredible We sat at the bar and the bartender was very friendly and made some really delicious cocktails, my favorite was the hibiscus margarita! They brought out some homemade salsa and chips that were so good we ordered the steak tacos which had a very generous portion of meat , so tender and very tasteful ! Followed by the Shrimp Costenos Served in a pineapple with Chipotle marinated, passion fruit and pineapple salsa, sweet potatoes pure. So looking forward to coming back to trying more options next time ! Also heard they have an amazing brunch !!!
Great Mexican spot close to Broadway train station in Astoria. They have nice wall decor elements and some natural light in some areas of the restaurant that really elevates the overall aesthetic. The service was great and friendly. The menu has many options from common favorites like tacos and quesadillas to speciality items. We ordered the shrimp tacos, a shrimp and pineapple dish called shrimp costenos, and the street corn. The shrimp costenos was superb, so much unique flavor. We've never had anything like it! Prices are good and portion sizes are great. We had an amazing time coming here!
This restaurant was so delicious. I’m extremely picky with Mexican food in the USA but Ruta was amazing. I was recently in Oaxaca and I’d say this is as good as you can get outside of Mexico. Fresh food. Not greasy. Nice ingredients. Good service. Cozy ambiance. This is my new go to restaurant.
Amazing enchiladas, corn & drinks!! Go here if your in the area!!! Update - we went here one year later & still so good! The nachos were amazing. Ask for the habanero salsa - will elevate all of your dishes! The only con- we found the chips to be slightly oily! Otherwise will definitely be going here again!
SOOOO DELISH~ oh and of course the decor is my FAV COLOR~~~ PINK!! 💖💪🏻💖~ first time here and we were SO EXCITED TO TRY!!! ~~ the staff was SUPER FRIENDLY and the food AMAZEEEEE 👍🏻👏🏻👍🏻👏🏻!!! This place is NOT your typical Mexican food 😁! Instead it’s Mexican with a gourmet twist 🥰💪🏻!!! The meals were not only DELICIOUS but the presentation and food combination were SOOOO GOOD!! My hunnnies Jeff and I started with the guac!! AND because I LOVE to eat I began by eating about 500 nacho chips that were served for the table! Yup! Wayyy too many but the salsa was sooo good! That wasn’t it tho~ because I coupled those chips with a tasty beverage! The Flaka (like a margarita 😍)!! It was the drink on the menu with no sugary filler juice nonsense! Why waste the calories when I can just eat more chips…LOL 🤣!! Then for our meals, I originally intended to order brunch but of course I instead go for the hearty Steak Oaxaqueno~ NY strip steak topped with plantains, queso and I think mole sauce!? You can see in the pic! It was SOOO DELISH and had a bit of a kick which I loved!!! Jeff ordered a brunch item which was the Huevos Rancheros which again was sooo good! What I LOVED most about this place besides it being pink 😜, and the staff being so nice was that the food was different! It was gourmet! It wasn’t your average Mexican food which is why I loved it!! OH~ and also they gave us a free mini sample of the chicken tortilla soup to try!! ~ what a great idea~ because it was sooo good I would go back and order next time or even for takeout!! So all in all~ I DEF RECOMMEND!!! Can’t wait to go back and try the others dishes!! Hopefully I’ll be able to control my nacho chip intake so I can order more apps to try!! ~~~ 💖💪🏻💖💪🏻
I cannot begin to explain my experience in this magical place. I don’t want to sound corny by saying this is the best Mexican restaurant in queens by miles but I will. First was the smile and confidence of the hostess. It was genuine and authentic. We started with the cocktails which featured high end tequilas not that headache inducing well tequila mist Mexican spots sell. Some serves in clay pots some in glass the exotic salts that dance on the rim and the burnt pineapple that coated my palette was just one of the many amazing cocktails served. While we came for breakfast it was absolutely a great choice by the wife ofcourse. With probably the best flavor profile, texture sauces and the mole was rich and deep in tradition that only a great grandma from mexico could capture. I was literally transported to a small kitchen in mexico. The eggs were perfectly made, nothing too extreme to knock the flavors off balance and it seems like everything ordered was a hit as well as beautifully plated. Finally a authentic Mexican spot that taste as good as it was presented. My favorite Mexican spot in Astoria. 5⭐️ A big future ahead.
I popped into this local Mexican restaurant and was so glad that I did. This time around I only wanted a cocktail so I ordered the Amante Picante margarita. Delicious! If you want a margarita and want some variety, Ruta is definitely the place. The food menu looked impressive so I will definitely try the food next time.
Went to Ruta this past Saturday for brunch without a reservation, with 7 other friends. We sat near the front window inside, and had pitchers of white sangria along with the chips and salsa to start. The brunch itself was SO GOOD. I had the special enchiladas, which had chorizo, shrimp, and chicken, because you should always try specials! WOW, it was freaking delicious! The restaurant did get very warm at one point, which along with the spicy food, had us all sweating. Our server Emilio and another lady server brought us little frozen margarita shots and dessert to help cool us down. Again, so good! They really went above and beyond which means a great deal to me. We really enjoyed our experience and will definitely be back!
Love this Mexican gem in Astoria. The place is a cozy, vibrant spot that serves up some of the most mouth-watering Mexican dishes you could dream of. First off, their beef short ribs in mole sauce - it's like a fiesta in your mouth. Those beef short ribs are so good I dream about them. Picture this: succulent, fall-apart tender meat that's been slow-cooked to the point of perfection. Each rib was deboned and covered in a rich, complex mole sauce, creating a symphony of flavors that dance on your palate. You can cut it with a spoon. Their birria tacos were so good! These are not just any tacos - they're a messy, juicy delight. Each bite is a perfect blend of savory, spicy, and just a hint of sweetness. The meat is slow-cooked to perfection, making it incredibly flavorful and tender. The shrimp with pineapple is another star dish. It's a tropical twist that works wonders. The shrimp are perfectly cooked, and the pineapple adds a sweet, tangy punch that's absolutely refreshing. Their rotating menu of ceviche is a seafood lover's dream. Every visit brings a new surprise, each ceviche bursting with fresh, zesty flavors. And the tender octopus? It's cooked just right - not too chewy, not too soft. It's seasoned and grilled to perfection, creating a smoky, charred exterior while remaining succulent inside. This place is a must-visit for anyone looking to dive into some authentic, delicious Mexican cuisine in Astoria. It's not just a meal; it's an experience that leaves you craving for more!
A must visit if you like Mexican food. Drinks are great, they have many different types of margaritas, and a great selection of tequila and mezcal. Food is amazing and not expensive. Very flavorful, and not too spicy (if you don't want it to be). Service was great too, very attentive, food and drinks came quickly. Overall, a great option for Mexican food, one of the best I've had in New York. Strangely enough, one of the best tiramisu I've had.
I love every dish I've tried here! The food is amazing. Drinks are delicious, love the 2 for the price of 1 on Saturday's. The Rosita drink is my favorite here. Great prices so refreshing from Manhattan prices. Make a reservation if you're coming with a large group of people as it can fill up quick. The chips and salsa they give you to start are super tasty. I've tried a few dishes here, the enchiladas mole, pork tacos (cochinita pibil), the shrimp costenos, and beef short ribs and they are all worth getting. There is another location in L.I. that I haven't tried yet, but hope to soon.
We’re in New York for vacation. Absolutely loved the food at this restaurant. Even our picky eater tweens said it was the best nachos and quesadillas they’ve ever had. Spicy chicken soup, birria tacos and churros were fantastic.
The food here’s it’s just amazing. Every time I come here never disappoints! This time I went for the first time to the bar to try their happy hour and omg what an incredible menu with delicious food and drinks and of course our bartender Michael was superb with good energy and great service in general!
I would be thrilled if this spot were in my neighborhood, alas it is not but we were happy to try it. There is an extensive list of mescals, tequila and cocktails, which tells me this joint must be jumping at night. We came for lunch, arriving at 12:45 and the room already had energy by 2 when we left it was full accept the bar which still had seats. We were served chips and salsa right away and then ordered guacamole (a little spicy please). I ordered a non-alcoholic beer which they had (still January people) and the we both ordered taco plates. I had the crispy shrimp, which were substantial in size overflowing with butterflied shrimp and cabbage. My wife ordered the cochinita pibil which was large enough that she took one taco home with us. If we are ever back in the area we will return. It was a fun vibe even if they had a TV with NY1 on the whole time (👎tv has no place in a restaurant, unless there is sports on for the solo diners. News?!? That’s depressing)
FABULOUS! This place is is phenomenal it slaps every single time! They never miss! I love the sauce that the chicken buñuelos come in, the mole is out of this world. Emilio took such good care of us he recommended great options and was very attentive to our needs. The atmosphere is very lively but not too loud we could easily converse and hear one another. But the music was great as well!
Ruta Oaxaca has the most Delicious Food you will ever find. To start, the Salsa and Chips are uniquely in a class of their own. The appetizers, including the Empanadas, are expertly prepared, followed by the main courses, including the seafood, beef, and chorizos, which are always Extremely Delicious as well. The desserts, including the Tiramisu and the Tres Leche, complete this amazing dining experience. Every meal I have ever had there is well worth it. The staff is always extremely professional and attentive, and I am looking forward to going again!
The guacamole and tacos are so good, go on Tuesday for a taco Tuesday deal. The staff are all so sweet! The tacos are loaded up and have so much flavor. It had a very nice tasteful trendy design. The drinks are delicious and a good price, especially during their happy hour! Astoria classic!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ruta is an absolute gem! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm, stylish, and inviting. The food was incredible—full of flavor, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care. Every dish we tried was a hit. The staff was amazing—friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which made the entire experience even better. The drinks were also fantastic and paired perfectly with the meal. Whether you’re going for a date night, a celebration, or just a great night out, Ruta is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be coming back!
Every Ruta night is an excellent night! One of my go-to upscale yet unpretentious spots in the neighborhood. Have never tried a dish here that wasn’t delicious, and the service is warm and friendly. The chilaquiles at brunch are top notch, and the cocktail menu is impressive (I typically go for the spicy mango, but they’ve got options for every palate)!
If you love discovering great places to eat, add Ruta Oaxaca to your list. This spot delivers top-tier Mexican cuisine and hits all three of my restaurant criteria: 1) Customer Service, 2) Food, and 3) Atmosphere. Straight fives across the board. From the moment you walk in, the staff makes you feel genuinely welcomed. We were greeted instantly by both a team member and the manager, who went out of their way to accommodate us. Our server was fantastic—attentive, friendly, and full of great recommendations. The manager even checked in during our meal to make sure everything was perfect and to share info about their weekend events. Amazing hospitality. Now the food… WOW. The chips and salsa? Addictive. The guac? Phenomenal. The tacos? Obviously incredible. But the real standout for me was the octopus—warm, comforting, flavorful… just get it. Even the rice and beans were great. They were out of plantains that night, but honestly, that just gives me a reason to come back. To finish things off, the manager surprised us with the best churros I've ever had—cinnamon-sugar heaven with a rich cream for dipping. The cocktails were just as impressive. My favorite was the watermelon martini—fresh, balanced, and dangerously delicious. Ruta Oaxaca is an easy 5-star experience. My wife and I are already thinking about going back this weekend!
I absolutely love this place, food is on its point just like home the drinks at it’s perfect balance service could not have been better very polite and able to answer to our request We had chilaquiles verdes and tacos de birria flavors were delicious For drinks we had mezcalitas love them I would come back any time and definitely recommend
Really good Mexican spot! The quesadillas were full of flavor, especially the crispy shrimp ones. Chicken mole was outstanding. Same as the churros! Service was friendly. Prices were reasonable for the portions. The atmosphere was lively. Perfect place to watch sports too. Buzzy neighbourhood. Recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We pass by this place often and finally gave it a try. Did not disappoint! Their guacamole is OUTSTANDING! Chunky guac with tons of veggies - it was so so tasty. Been dreaming about it since. Food: Really delicious. The standout was the guacamole and chips. The mains were good and would definitely get again, but neither had a big wow factor (at least not like the guac had). The tacos were good, larger than expected, but slightly dry. The quesadillas were smaller than expected but very tasty. It also came with rice and beans. Drinks: Got the berry margarita and was tasty. Service: Pretty good. Our waiter was attentive and refilled our waters often. Our order was taken within reasonable time and food wait wasn’t noticeably long. Ambiance: Darker setting, good for dates. Music was a bit loud but overall pretty good place!
Came today for lunch for the first time, it was also their 3rd anniversary. They had a Mariachi band and tequila tasting to celebrate. We had an excellent meal, drinks were buy one get one free until 4pm, and service was outstanding. Queso fundido (not pictured), shrimp, pollo asado, and carne asada tacos, enchiladas campenchana, and tres leches for dessert. Everything was delicious!! I love going to a restaurant where I feel welcomed and not rushed. Can’t wait to come back!
Amazing staff and service! Came here with a group of six on a Saturday. The chips and salsa are amazing, and everything I tried tasted so good especially the desserts. It was super loud in the restaurant so don’t expect to have easy conversation at peak dinner time. I ordered 3 different tacos and one of them was incorrect when it arrived, but that’s likely due to the noise.
Ever since watching Chef’s Table episode with Enrique Olvera, I wanted to try mole. Realized it’s not easy to find a mexican restaurant that serves mole, so def excited to try it for the first time here! I ordered La Chingona margarita with Pechuga con Mole. Amazing. It was my friend’s birthday so we tried their Tres Leches, coffee flan & mezcal tiramisu. I KID YOU NOT — must order mezcal tiramisu. Ended the night with chapulines (fried grasshopper) & mezcal. Never had the delicacy before, and it was the highlight to our Mexican experience. It wasn’t food; it was an experience. Quality all the way.
This was my second time visiting this restaurant, and it didn’t disappoint! My friend and I accidentally found this place a few months ago, and since our first experience was great, we decided to come back today. everything was wonderful—the waitresses were friendly, and they even gave us a complimentary little bowl of chicken soup, which was a nice touch. The menu has a great variety of food, and the drinks are delicious. This time, I got a mix tacos, and it was just as tasty as I remembered. Overall, a fantastic place with great service and food. Highly recommend!
We had a fabulous time at Ruta! The restaurant was open and airy, and had lots of fun, bright decorations. We were seated immediately and we were given complementary chicken tortilla soup. I ordered the Chilaquiles, which were delicious and had a great blend of flavors. My partner ordered the mole enchiladas, which had a lovely savory and smoky flavor. We’ll definitely come back to Ruta and highly recommend to anyone!
Delicious Oaxacan food. Even the salsa at the start of the meal had very distinct flavors. The ceviche was super fresh and tender. The ribs with mole were very tender, and the mole sauce serving was rather generous. It was also quite sweet, which the waiter said is customary for Oaxaca. Dessert was also good. All the portions were large. The waiter gave consistently good advice. He was pretty upbeat and friendly. I almost want to take away one star because the place is extremely loud and we could barely hear each other among the music and voices that carried over from tables far away. I hope they do something about that.
Great Mexican spot in Astoria, finally!! Food was great, service is on point and drinks were strong!! Brunch had buy one get one free on drinks, which was nice. I appreciate them not cheaping out on beans on their nachos..some of the best nachos in town btw! I will be a customer as long as they keep up the quality of the food!
My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to grab food. Not sure if it was the manager or chef but he convinced us to stay even though we were not dress (you don’t have to dress up) but we sat by the bar. Great customer services, also gave us recommendations. Food was delicious and the drinks were strong. I would definitely come back. Can’t complain. Place is beautifully decorated and clean.
We visited this place on a Friday night at 7:30. The food arrived quicker than we anticipated, but once the restaurant got busy, it was a bit challenging for the staff to attend to us. However, if you visit during a less crowded time, I’m sure everything will be smooth sailing. The food was passable, but we didn’t try anything particularly memorable. Nevertheless, it could be a decent spot for a casual meal.
I really enjoyed the drinks and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant along with the music choice. Very authentic. The food was good; however, it did seem to have a twist. While adventurous palates will be delighted, those seeking traditional tastes might want to explore other options, so keep that in mind ! :)
Dining in Astoria is consistently on my list, and if you're feeling lost about which place to try, go to Ruta Oaxaca. Wonderful service that was patient as we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. They immediately gave us chips and salsa and replenished when we asked. The drinks were fine, rather typical, but the food was outstanding. Every bite melted into your mouth without making you feel too heavy. Most of our party ordered an enchilada. I don't usually like enchiladas because they feel heavy and saucy, but the seafood enchiladas at Rita were full of flavor and nicely filled without swimming in oil. Our friends ordered the mole enchiladas which was recommended by the staff. Their only feedback was to have more mole, but every table does get a bowl of rice and another of beans. My boyfriend ordered the ribs, which were the true star of the show - they pulled off the bone so well that one piece slid straight to the floor! They had a sweet barbecue flavor and were tender and juicy without sticking to your teeth. If you want to get $15 off your order here, sign up for the Seated App will my code maria1247
Went here with family and friends for a quiet Wednesday dinner and had made reservations for 7:15 pm which we got very easily 2 days in advance. It was the 5 of us which included our 2 year old, who was seated in his comfortable high chair at our table (indoors). They also have a nice outdoor seating area with heating. Something very noticeably different was how our 2 year old got a small plate with cut avocado slices and strawberries which is his favorite. 1 star just for this thoughtful gesture and something we've never seen in any NYC restaurant. This definitely made us all very very happy! For apps, we ordered Chicken Bunuelo ($13.95) and Vegetable Empanadas ($12.95). The Chicken app was enjoyed by everyone at the table, but the empanadas were very greasy to our liking. In fact, it made me lose my appetite and I couldn't finish my entrée. I am scrambling to find mushrooms between the abundantly present corn. For entrée, tacos was the way to go which include Pork (Cochinita Pibil - $17.95), Grilled Chicken ($16.95), and Vegetable ($15.95) options for our table. My veggie tacos were generously filled up and my corn tacos broke very easily when taking a bite - but not complaining! They were good, but lacked a flavorful sauce. Service was absolutely excellent and noise level was average by the time we left.
Went to this establishment for Mother’s Day on the Saturday right before it. We made reservations & were the first customers for the day! The food was delicious as well as the drinks. The server was exceptional & knew all of the drinks & items on the menu to make heartfelt recommendations for new patrons. The bar was nice & our table faced the open sidewalk which was wonderful as the day was marvelous. We will definitely be back as we traveled from Hempstead Long Island to eat here.
I came here because the other place I was planning on wasn't open yet (it was 3pm). I saw Ruta Oaxaca had some good reviews, so I thought, why not?! I was pleasantly surprised, especially when I found out it was happy hour! Even though I waited over an hour for my friend, I was well taken care of. I sat outside and was the only one there, which was nice as it was a little tight in the outdoor seating hut, and it could be tough getting around if it was full. They brought out fresh salsa and homemade tortilla chips that were incredibly crisp and thick. The salsa was just the right amount of spice and complimented my delightfully refreshing margarita. I got the casafortunas, a spicy, slightly sweet, summery margarita with a poblano salt that goes down easily... so I had two. The cucumber cools the heat down a little, so the combinations of the sweet & spicy mix together nicely. I also got the shrimp flautas, which were absolutely delicious and beautiful to look at! Side note, these usually come with crema, but I asked for it without. (I know, I'm crazy!) But they were still incredible! If my friend hadn't been so late, I would've ordered something else, but I had a time restraint. My friend got the grilled chicken tacos, with fresh, homemade corn tortillas, and those, too, were super flavorful and delicious. It is a little on the pricey side so it's not an everyday restaurant but the food is really great and I am looking forward to coming back here and trying more things!
Ruta Oaxaca in Astoria is my favorite restaurant in NYC for many reasons. The drinks are excellent (and it has a beautiful bar which is also sports capable), wonderful presentation and service and the food is spectacular. On the weekend brunch I would recommend ordering an appetizer, the Heuvos Rancheros, Ruta Chilaquiles, or Ribs and Eggs (the ribs fall off the bone!) A special dessert is the coffee flan. This is not your average Mexican food. The music and ambiance round out a perfect experience.
This place has great Mexican food! Even the salsa they start you with had great flavor! We started with the Ruta Nachos for our appetizer, and we loved them! They were the best nachos we ever had! It was packed with black beans, jalapeños, chihuahua cheese, and queso fresco! They did not skimp at all! For dinner we had the steak enchiladas, mixed seafood enchiladas, and chicken quesadillas. The best out the three was the steak enchiladas. My sister loved them, and gives this place 5 stars! I had the mixed seafood enchiladas topped with a habanero cream sauce. I thought it was very good, but I thought the habanero sauce could have more flavor. My husband had the chicken quesadillas. The chicken in it was well seasoned and tasted excellent! It was a little different than quesadillas we had at other Mexican places because it had more meat than cheese. We had the platanos for a side and that was DELICIOUS! We will definitely be back. I recommend Ruta Oaxaca in Astoria!
It was a good experience to finally visit the first Ruta Oaxaca since I've visited all, but my favorite is still the one of all would be the location in Patchogue because of the staff. The food was the same authenticity at all locations. The chips and salsa were okay, but the Patchogue roasted tomato option is top tier. If you are going to drive, it will be difficult. It is best to use Uber or take the train...it is a busy restaurant filled location. Sorry for not having images of the food. It was good and I wanted to dig in but if you check my other reviews, you dish presentation are the same.
Overall, it was a decent spot. Service was okay—nothing to rave about, but not bad either. The shrimp flautas and esquites were definitely the stars of the night—super tasty and well done. Unfortunately, the tacos didn’t quite live up to the hype; they were slightly underwhelming flavor-wise. BUT — and this is a big but — we asked for their hot sauce when we realized the tacos needed a little help, and wow. That sauce was a total saving grace — spicy, flavorful, and brought everything to life. We might go back just for that hot sauce alone, haha.
I went here for an early dinner around 630, the place was empty 3 tables including us. The waiter took forever to take our order, on top of that he got the order wrong we asked for steak enchiladas and received chicken. We wanted more drink but he came to check on us once after that he didn’t come. He was the only waiter which would be understandable if it was busy but it was empty. When we asked for the check he took forever having a conversation with a women at the bar and then introducing her to the bartender (which also took forever for our drinks) he continued to talk and we finally got our check. Overall service for us was not good, more attentive waiter would have been nice, instead of getting a view of him socializing. I can only wonder how it is when it’s busy.
Service was great, staff was amazing and friendly the environment is superb. Everything about this location was great. The vibes and drinks on point. With that said the food was not to my flavor standards. Guac was just onion and tomatoes no flavor or anything added. The food came out fast and looked great but everything was lacking actual flavor. I’m sorry to say it but growing up on Spanish food especially Mexican I was dissatisfied and disappointed by the taste and flavor. Besides that the food looked amazing and the place itself was wonderful. I would come back for cocktails and free chips with the salsa. Thank you all for a great time. (We only had the tacos BTW) I’m sure the entrées and other food will be more tasty and flavored. (5 out of 10 in the flavor department for the tacos)
Beautiful restaurant with lovely ambiance but the night I went there on a date the service was excruciatingly slow, this was last Friday evening. It took 30 minutes to receive a Cosmopolitan cocktail and I was sitting at the bar. We ordered guacamole that was too salty! And the color of the guac was questionable. We paid and left, never to return again.
The place is beautiful, the fish tacos were great as I was told. The vegetarian tacos were pathetic. Lovely corn tortillas with just sweet corn, and cilantro being the only flavor. Pathetic lazy mess on a plate for $15. We were only a third table out of 20. The fact that the server took away a full plate of food without asking anything as I'm eating a side of rice and beans on slow day with a manager sitting in front of me on the phone says a lot about it. Another fancy overpriced Mexican food place. $98 + tip and I ate rice and beans (which were excellent). Mind you this review is for the vegetarian item. Still match the look and feel of the place.
I don’t know if this was just an off night or what. I’ve been here many times, normally with decent service and decent food. Great drinks normally. But tonight, a Saturday night, was completely off. The bar tenders had no idea what they were doing. They lied to me about giving me Hendrix and soda, which was farmers and soda, and I really think the new bartender was just making drinks up. The food and the vibes were so off. At the end of the meal the bar tender said “here’s a shot on the house of siete misterios mezcal. But grabbed it off the bottom shelf??. It was not siete misterios mezacal. Even the mariachi seemed like the “B” team tonight. So bizarre and very disappointed. Won’t be coming back.
We came here on a Saturday night, we asked the man working if we could get a table to which he replied there were reservations and bar seating was the only available option. We sat at the bar and ordered our food. Once we were done with our meal we asked both the bartender and the manager for the check as we were in a hurry to leave. First we asked the bartender for the check and he replied it would be 2 minutes. 7 minutes had passed and we still did not get the check so I had attempted to ask the manager for the check to which he said yes started to help then proceeded to ignore us. There is a serious understaffing issue in this restaurant I do not recommend, food was mediocre as well. Also throughout the past hour we were there the dining floor was mostly empty, didn't make sense considering the man said they were full of reservations. Overall, this was the worst restaurant experience of my whole entire life thus far.
I was super excited to try Ruta Oaxaca and was a horrible disappointment. The "filet mignon" asada tacos was obviously not filet mignon and the meat was burnt, dry, flavorless and the tortillas cold and from the store. I ordered queso funding I was super excited supposed to come with chorizo and poblano peppers that wasn't chorizo was more like a salchicha para asar and they forgot the Poland when I asked they told me they will bring some and they did 2 tinny pieces of poblando along with a lot of onions and of course they were cold too and the cheese was also cold by then. I would never comeback or recommend to anyone. Please DO better or stop saying that is mexican food is not.

When I arrived, I was received by the hostess with rudeness saying “digame”, kind of “yes”, without smile or saying “good morning” or welcome. I was international flight attendant, I studied in London and here in NYC, and I have attended many times to “Ruta Oaxaca”, I have lived in Astoria for many years, I have not experienced rudeness like this or perhaps it is his personality. When you order Ceviche, the bartender didn’t not mention lactose was in the guacamole sauce in the ceviche. Sunday ceviche (chef’s plate special), it was a salmon toast with guacamole sauce (tastes like chile poblano with milk, didn’t taste like avocado), the sauce was extremely salted. I told the bartender. They just came with a toasted with salmon and cuscus, saying the cream was avocado and it was chile poblano, milk and lot of salt. Then the bartender tried to make a joke and saying me “guapa “ = “pretty” as if we were friends, asking me where I was from and I was north mexican and Spanish but long time in Astoria as film director and writer. I have visited many times Oaxaca. I studied and worked in Mexico city many years. Anyway, I didn’t like the salty salmon toasted nor the service. CEVICHE: at any presentation it is with lemon and one type of fish (fillet, shrimps, clams, octopus in squares). The presentation of the dish was good but not the taste. Definitely, not a dish from Oaxaca. Not staff friendly as people from Oaxaca.
