The Beal Bocht! Try it ... If you haven't! Cozy, friendly Riverdale gem! Brona makes sure the machine is well-oiled. Eifa and Megan are the best servers of good food, good drinks ... And the pints!!!!!! The music is ALWAYS good! Mary Courtney on Friday: You MUST see Mary. The loveliest person, very talented musician, Irish historian! Thanks Mary! Check their site for events. 😊👍🍻
Great food, drinks and atmosphere. The staff are amazing and very friendly. We love coming here.
Iconic music house, a place many call home! Always love coming here for the staff and vibes!
Fantastic character for a pub. Great music on the Sunday night that I went. Food is good. Favourite were the Chicken Tenders.
Gaelic bar/restaurant. Good bar food - I keep ordering the burger, it's juicy and crumbles as a well prepared burger should. The shepherd's pie is another prime entree here. The wings may be of small portion but they are well-breaded and have a fine buffalo sauce on top - I always order the wings with dinner. The beer selection is modest but covers most tastes (you can have your local craft brew, your imports, or your bud light). The price is modest too.
A gem in this neighborhood. Come in for good food, a drink or three, welcoming service, and great live music.
It is a beautiful bar, great people. They really support local bands and theater. The shows bring the community together. The staff is awesome, it's one of the best bars around.
This place is a gem. The staff and atmosphere are wonderful! Check out their website, they've always got something special going on. Food is tasty, inexpensive, and there is always carrot cake
A nice little Irish pub with good food, live local music. There's not a lot in this area, and it's kind of a singular place. It has the kind of mom-and-pop old-school charm that you can't fake.
This is a true Irish place that makes you feel welcome regardless of what you order. And the live music nearly every night is so rare in NYC these days. All that for very reasonable prices.
The greatest neighborhood irish pub of Riverdale. Live music, beers on tap, micro brews, seasonal cocktails, guiness to top it off. Reasonable pricing and a chill/ laid back atmosphere. You'd be lucky to get to go there sometime soon!
Such a lovely place to have a drink or eat a bit. The bartenders are always so kind as well. There are some nights when they play live music, which is always a treat.
Great Irish pub. Always good music.
I love going to this local irish pub. I dont drink, but that is never a problem for me. The bartenders keith and caitlin are quick and did I mention, hilarious?! There are also dope open mics and poetry nights. Come check it out ! Welcome for all ages that are over 21.
Great burgers and fries. I lived in Riverdale for 56 years and ate 2x in the past month and felt it was Riverdale's hidden gem of a restaurant. My friend Marty and I highly recommend it.
Love the atmosphere. Feels like being teleported back to Ireland even if only for an hour or two. Catch a trad session. Enjoy a full breakfast. And make sure you got the spicy bloody mary!
An authentic neighborhood pub with Irish pub grub ☘️ A real treat when Trivia Night or live music is on the calendar.
My favorite bar in the neighborhood. Years ago while searching for place to live, I plopped down at ABB with a friend of mine, grabbed the local paper and began looking through real estate ads to gauge prices. It was Saturday morning and Bob Dylan fired up on the stereo. We each ordered one of the best Irish breakfasts that I've had to date. The spring sun was shining in as a few young and old patrons fitered in; some ready to start a serious session, some just popping in for coffee. I knew this place was for me. Fast forward ten years and I still visit ABB at least once a week. It has a fair amount of families during the day and a vibrant, mellow crowd at night. Captain Lawrence is almost always on tap. The kitchen is still the same size but they have an expanded menu of decent stuff. Well worth the visit.
discovered this gem a year ago. took the train to NYC & then the subway to Riverdale. got off a different stop & was looking to spend a coupla hours in a diner or coffee shop as I was early. passed by An Beal Bocht & had to try it. stopped in & had a nice vegetarian Irish Breakfast served up promptly by a winsome lass who seemed to have everything about the place firm in hand. the only disappointment about the place is location. if it were close to me then I could be in there every week for music, friends, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. they'd need to give me frequent flyer miles. Sláinte.
Fantastic food and service, and a very nice outdoor dining area. We came on a Monday, and we’ll be sure to be back other days for live music and brunch.
Fabulous staff, great ambiance and lovely crowd. The music was spectacular. Intimate space, without feeling crowded . Lots of laughter and quick wit to go with your wine . The food is excellent! Great bloody Mary’s as well ! A good ol’ fashioned , authentic Irish pub !
Always a perfect place for a perfect pint. No tvs to interfere with conversations. Big smiles and friendly faces from servers who appear to love their jobs. This Mainer who visits NYC frequently believes it is the best pub in the city.
Simply the Best there is if you’re a musician or a vocalist like me. Eric runs the place every Tuesday nights for open mic. And he runs it rock solid. I’ve never as much seen quarreling going on between anyone there, nice community. I totally enjoy singing at this venue. ,,,,oh and did mention how good the food is there too as well as the bartenders who make awesome drinks! Great vibe going on all the time
This is what a REAL Irish pub is all about: a relaxed ad hoc community center/social club that feels like a little piece of Ireland has been airlifted into the Bronx. Great local vibe, colorful non-obnoxious clientele, great music, great place to fritter away the evening hours. One of the best pubs in the boroughs without a doubt.
A great neighborhood spot that always has a good vibe. 5 stars for the small business/local love, but 3 stars for the food.... The first time I went there pre-pandemic, without asking they subbed whip cream on my pancakes because they were out of fruit. And just recently, I ordered the veggie burger but it didn't come on a pretzel bun like the menu stated.
Good food, good service, good beer selection and a damn good Guinness pour. Cool events like live music or poetry on different nights throughout the week. Also, a good eclectic mix of people that visit; you'll see a young person from Manhattan College sitting with a guy in a suit sitting next to a hip middle aged mom. Tip: if the weather is good, get there early to snag a seat outside.
Great neighborhood bar. I went on a Thursday night and the two bartenders (Keely (sp*) and Keith were very attentive and quick! The live music is a great touch that you don't find often midweek. Since there is no cover charge; be kind, bring some cash and tip the musicians. They just ask you give what you can. My friend also ordered food and she said it was just what she had been craving. She ordered the Irish Toastie and said it was delicious. We cant wait to go back!
My very first day working in Riverdale involved a trip to An Bean Bocht Cafe, and I absolutely loved it. The service was amazing, and the food ... I did not expect pork chops could ever taste that good, and it did. Everyone seemed super-happy to be there, and the live music is something you don't really get to hear in a lot of places. And here's the thing ... it was good, too. The only thing I'm trying to figure out is why I haven't been back there yet ...
Love their brunch! Great place to meet people and experience art, music and culture! An Beale Bocht always cheers me up.
A real treasure of a place in Riverdale, NY. The right size. Live music. Open Mics. A nice bar. Good food. Great people. No TVs. This is not a sports bar. This is a neighborhood bar that feels more like your walking into a friend's place. There's a real homey feel to it.
A truly unique slice of Ireland in the North Bronx. Regular live music and events. This pub is steeped in literary tradition with legendary authors adorning the walls, along with traditional Irish fare. Don't miss the Irish breakfast, including a great vegetarian version.
Cozy neighborhood bar with great drinks, a nice local music scene and delicious bar food. Nice seating outside on a warm day and great for people watching. Friendly staff and decent prices as well. Parking may be a little tricky but you can get lucky and find something right outside on 236 street
An Beal is a neighborhood pub with an eclectic vibe. I've been going here on and off since they opened their doors 31 years ago. Chat it up with the patrons, and catch some live music which they have regularly. The food is pretty standard... you can get a shepherd's pie and chicken pot pie and some other Irish staples. Stop by for some craic!!
Great neighborhood Irish Pub. Fantastic food & drink, plus they have live music, plays, and other entertainment. It is within walking distance of Manhattan College, so it can get pretty crowded, especially on a sunny day when everyone wants to sit outside and enjoy the sun.
A wonderful friendly place. especially if you are creatively inclined. Cafe has its own very active theatre group presenting many original plays. The PoorMouth) Theatre has become a landmark in the Bronx. Concerts- - from folk music and classic rock to classical string quartets are heard on a regular basis. Food is excellent Stimulating conversation. Very friendly. Open 7 days a week
What a terrific little cafe this is! Love the neighborhood vibe and tasty brunch - and the bluegrass music. Will definitely be back.
So full disclosure, the kitchen here is achingly slow. HOWEVER this place is wonderful to spend time in and the food is worth it. Want to spend a lazy brunch drinking a complimentary bloody Mary and listening to live music? Then this place is for you.
Friendly, cozy, personal, casual, intimate Irish pub. The food is pretty good, but the service and atmosphere are what set this pub apart from others. The Irish folk music on Sunday afternoons are delightful. One can tell it is a definite neighborhood haunt in Riverdale. Great place. Cheers!
As an Irish person I gotta say this is a must visit in NYC! Not only do they have a great range of Irish food and drinks but the Trad on a Sunday ja the best in the city. It’s a one of a kind spot and well worth a visit.
A+ I had the best veggie burger for dinner. They can be hard to find.
Super friendly staff. Two rooms which gives it a cozy feel, but also lots of capacity. I only ordered a sour from the bar, so I can’t comment on their food yet, but next time I plan to try their Irish fare. There’s a little live music jam here sometimes, and the venue is very appreciative of the music and seems to get it. I really enjoyed my time here.
An Beal Bocht is a special place. Food is good, people are better. Nice warm environment with a strong emphasis on live music. If you're driving, parking can be a bit tough, but something always comes up.
The best Irish pub in New York, hands down. I have been coming here for 5+ years now and it just feels like home every time. They have wonderful live music, in-house theatre productions, and really tasty food and drinks at reasonable prices. The people who work here are what make it as great as it is. Everybody is so friendly and warm. You can and should just cozy up and spend hours here.
Great Irish pub, fantastic atmosphere. Live music throughout the week. The staff is phenomenal. They’re frequently busy so table service can be a bit slow, but it’s always good fun—my go to neighborhood spot
Cool spot. Very kind staff, very cold beer. Didn't eat but food looked good.
This place has my heart. It's so easy going, the bartender was so kind and even though she was the only one there we were never left waiting! Love music was fun too. Love the ambiance. You can really feel the local love when you're there. My only complaint is the fish in the fish and chips was just way too big and oily. But the fries and beer were awesome!
Went for trivia night the past two months. Love the dedication from the hosts they put on a great show. Bartenders are cool and the guinness is solid. Have really enjoyed all the food I've had here too. Fun spot overall.
Incredible local old school Irish pub with live music, good food and exceptional service. No better place to have a drink during the evening.
Snug, cozy little Irish bar close to Gaelic Park. About 8 or 9 outdoor tables for at least 4 ppl, including a couple of 6 person picnic tables. Was there on a nice weather late September Saturday afternoon. Sat outside with the bride & another couple. Very nice Guinness pints. Service was good. Both couples each split a burger & curry chicken. Both dishes very good. Wish my local was this good.
What a wonderful restaurant and bar/pub. It's filled floor to ceiling with ambiance. You get very personal service from the amazing staff (sometimes in that uniquely Irish way). The food is better than the traditional basic pub fair. They have a great dinner menu with Shepard's Pie and the lot. Today I had the Chicken sandwich with a side of fries. It was very fresh, and the bread cracked slightly as I bit into it. This is a must for a toasted bread. If you're in the neighborhood, please, please stop by and enjoy An Beal Bocht. They have both indoor and heated outside seating!
Took a trip up to Riverdale for lunch. Met a friend up there who recommended Au Beal Bocht cafe. An absolutely adorable little place. A short walk from the subway.(Up a very steep staircase) Very charming place. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Had to wait a bit for a table. There was a large party in back that I believe took up a lot of the seating this place has. Food was great. We had the traditional Irish breakfast and the omelette special they had. Delicious! Brunch came with a free drink. We got the mimosa. It came in a medium size ball jar! It was yummy and left me with a nice buzz. I totally recommend this place. If you're up in Riverdale or wanting to visit definitely stop here for your meal.
This is a Jewel in Riverdale. Tiny but great. I had the Bangers & Mash when I was there. The serving size was good for an early meal but the price was a little steep. However my overall experience was great.
I've been here many times with my husband who is from Scotland originally. He says it reminds him of the pubs of his native Edinburgh.
Friendly, down-home, cozy, fresh&flavorful food. Always a tad on the dirty side but hey...its part of the experience! Fantastic gem in this neighborhood. Very quiet when school is out for the summer.
Outstanding brunch at very reasonable prices. Cozy & colorful ambiance with plenty of personality. Good place to hang out with a pint or whatever and no pressure to get moving. Spirited live music with no cover.
This was a very collegiate, cutely decorated Irish pub. The service was great (thanks Dan) the food a bit "Diner-y". Guinnes on tap, yum! 5$ for a half pint...🫣
Charming cafe with live music most nights. I appreciated that they didn't charge a cover and did not demand that I buy anything. The only drawback is that people smoke right outside the doors and around the outdoor seating so I had to stay indoors to listen to the music. Despite that, I will return.
Great Bronx cultural, social and food bistro. We had a screening of our work and the management and crew were super supportive. Providing a great space. Nice atmosphere on the hills of da Bronx
Easily the best bar in Riverdale, though that's not saying much. Families are welcome during the day and they have great bands at night without a cover charge. Bartenders are friendly and drink prices are reasonable. The only downside? The food is absolutely horrible. Go eat somewhere else, then hit this place on your way home.
Cocktails were a little too sweet for my taste. Service is good. Happy hour appetizers, prices, and sizes, and the food in general is good.
Overall a nice place for lunch or grabbing a drink. Foods pretty decent though the fries could definitely use more seasoning. The outdoor atmosphere isn’t bad but the table is kinda far away from the booth seats and the back to the seat isn’t very comfortable. Other than that I have no complaints, the service was good and the outdoor area is definitely dog friendly. Would recomendable 👍
Awesome spot. Super cozy. Irish breakfast is a must. Lots of meats, to the point they offer ‘half meats’ for about $4 less. Even their “vegetarian” Irish Breakfast is 🤤. One of those businesses that charge you for using your card, so try bringing exact change. Not sure why they don’t give back coins, but just bring the exact change so you don’t have to pay an extra card surcharge or have to wonder why anyone would think it’s ok just to not give you your correct change. One of the best restaurants I’ve eaten from in Riverdale.
No TVs or anything but that forces you to talk to different people. As someone who goes to bars often I can say I stayed there longer than I usually do at other bars because of great conversation. Met several cool people while I was there. I felt like I was in a pub in Ireland or a bar somewhere out west. It was really a cozy little spot. The food was good too. The prices are also decent. I would'nt go there when there aren't a bunch of people to talk with simply because I'm social like and there isnt much else to keep you entertained except live music which is ok but that is the only reason I'm giving 4 stars not 5.
An excellent Irish pub. Great atmosphere with the session music. Good food and good Guinness. Bartender was a blast and very helpful
An Beal Bocht Cafe is a nice hidden gem restaurant! This restaurant gave really homey and cozy vibes. They have traditional Irish brunches like fish and chips, English beans, grilled cheese sandwiches, and sunny side up eggs. But what takes the cake and beats everything are their fries, their home fries are so good! The service here is also very good, the waiters are friendly and informative. The food also comes out pretty quick and they even have live music on the weekends. This place is very festive, and can also get pretty busy and crowded. It’s very old school, traditional, and cozy here! The prices are also decent, you can get meals from around $10-$20! So if you’re in the area, stop by here! The only criticism I have here is that they should just have the name of their restaurant more visibly written, so people can know the name of the place. Price:$10-20💸 Rating: 8.5/10 📝
Their food is good, but their drinks are weak. This is more of a casual place for teachers and professionals, not your average drinker. Their venue is beautiful, to say the least.
Local mainstay Irish bar near Manhattan College in the NW Bronx. Close to public transit. Feel food food veggie options nice variety of hard alcohol, mixed drinks and beers on tap.
The wait staff is excellent. Super friendly and fast. The food is…not great. I had the chili. I’m not a drinker but I guess it would be great for just grabbing drinks. Typical NY pub.
The food is okay, but it's probably not the attraction for this place. The menu is pretty limited as the kitchen is as big as my closet. If you are looking for an irish pub with good food, Riverdale City Grill is a better bet. But this place is a bit more relaxed for having a few drinks (and the food is merely a bonus).
We love Beal Bocht for its atmosphere, good drinks, people, staff, decor. We have been coming here on and off for years. We have had lunch and dinner and the food has always been good, nothing fancy but comforting and just right. But today, a Sunday, we arrived during Brunch and we were excited about the opportunity of something different and of course the complementary Mimosa. I ordered the traditional Irish breakfast (1/2 portion) with eggs over easy, my husband ordered the American breakfast with eggs over easy as well. Our orders arrived extremely fast but (and I wish I took photos), the eggs were overcooked, the home fries completely dried, almost burned, unappetizing and not to be eaten, my husband's bacon looked old and dried. All looked as if it had been cooked the day before and was reheated in the microwave (I am pretty sure this is what happened!). Thank goodness the mimosa helped the food go down...We told the waitress when she came to clear out the plates that the home fries were absolutely horrible, she agreed that they looked overcooked and apologize but did not offer to rectify the issue. I will never have a brunch at Beal Bocht again, too bad, they have a great opportunity to make it very special. I will come back for a drink, music and atmosphere. But really, I am wondering how it is possible to mess up eggs and bacon!
Two stars as both the Guiness and Captain Lawrence were diactyl bombs. It's a lovely pub, but you need to clean your taps.
Let me start off on a positive note: The server was awesome and so was the bartender. Their personalities made up for the rest, that was very disappointing. The last positive is that it is a lively group of people. It was certainly an eclectic mix, making everyone feel welcome. I am very familiar with traditional Irish food. I've traveled to Ireland more times than I can count, my best friend is Irish, and if I do say so myself, I've made some pretty good Irish dishes with their stamp of approval. I ordered the Shepard's Pie. It was mostly edible. Should I return, I'll never order it again. I also ordered their spicy margarita. It was not only not spicy but it had some sort of a smoky flavor to it that wasn't listed on the menu. I would never have ordered it had I known. I actually thought I was given the wrong drink. As phenomenal as the server was that night, she was so busy that I didn't bother complaining about the drink. When I was able to get her attention, I asked her about the drink's ingredients. She confirmed that it was not a spicy drink and yes it indeed had a smoky ingredient that was not listed on the menu. I'm still confused as I write this review. My friend ordered the cobb salad. She didn't finish it. She said, "It just wasn't that good". Now, onto the crowd: It was a nice healthy diverse crowd. The college is close by so there was a young crowd. It's an Irish pub so there were quite a few Irish folk. Lots of people coming and going throughout the evening. It's a very busy area so the streets were loud, upbeat, and very much alive. As were the patrons. We chose to sit outside at the lovely new "Covid Structures" as I call them. I was born and raised in Manhattan with many sidewalk cafes. When the outdoor seating became necessary due to covid, I was actually thrilled. Part of their outdoor seating is covered. The tables are quite large. They could easily accommodate a party of six. The problem with the seats is they are too far away from the table. I had sit at the edge of the seat in order to belly up and eat over my food. Perhaps this design is for different sized people but it made my stay very uncomfortable. My friend is even smaller than I am and she was terribly uncomfortable. The last thing I will say about An Beal Bocht is; lots of smokers hang out there. They are not smoking at the tables nor in front of the restaurant, but they are smoking within arms reach at both sides of the outdoor seating area. I sat there eating bad food, drinking a bad cocktail, on an uncomfortable bench that was too far away from the table, all while inhaling cigarette smoke. I thought I might give it a second chance between when I was there and my writing this review. Putting all of that experience together made me realize that there are many restaurants in Riverdale that I enjoy. It's just not worth it
1. An Irish pub should not serve Magner’s cider! 2. What kind of Irish pub is out of fish & chips at 7pm on a Wednesday? 3. An Irish pub should be capable of making a shepherd pie that is edible. 4. How does anyone screw up grilled cheese?? Positive: decent fries (small portions); they had Crabbie’s ginger beer. Cannot/will not recommend. Won’t be back for the food, that’s for sure.
I ordered bbq wings and it was drenched in sauce, it was unappetizing. My friend ordered the house cheese cake and the waiter brought out this (picture below). The service wasnt the best, when we kindly asked if we can be served a different plate instead of this cheese cake the waiter still charged us for it. The atmosphere was alright not the best but they tried. It was honestly not a great experience overall, I would definitely recommend Blackstone Bar and Grill which is a couple of blocks up the hill.
I'll never go back. I've been in a number of times, and every single time there has been some sort of controversy. Whether it's been over charging for drinks I didn't order, or complaints about tips, and now money comes off my card when I'm in NJ!
I’ve been here multiple times and they’re always giving me and and my friends attitude when they ask for our IDs. I was just there 2 nights ago and ordered a bunch of drinks and tipped and when I asked for a water they said they were too busy and I have to buy another drink if I want a water. The bartenders always seem miserable and have an attitude. I will never come back after they denied MULTIPLE people water.
