Nice old fashioned diner with a nice menu and great staff.
Plenty of choices, great tasting coffee, food is tasty, and service is superb. Friendly atmosphere.
its a great have-to-go place. i love their breakfasts in particular. really nice people.
Awesome old school classic diner. Friendly staff and great food at a good price! Check it out.
A very nice and comfortable old fashioned restaurant giving you a peaceful relaxation feeling as you enjoy your food
Lobster House, favorite spot. Great food and drinks. Love the sangria. Antonia is the best ❤
Not only have I grown up with the management and staff, giving a nostalgic, homey atmosphere. The food is quality on every level and possibly the BEST DAMNED Chili I've ever had! 👍👍👍 I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a TRUE City Island experience 😁
One of my favorite breakfast spots in the New York area. Love it here. Great staff.. good coffee. The kitchen sink omelet is excellent.
City Islanders know the "Diner" can't be beat for perfect pancakes, eggs and french toast for breakfast all day. Great burgers, creative sandwiches and the best Manhattan clam chowder on the island for lunch. Worth a trip just for the heck of it or if you are visiting City Island for the day by land or sea.
The food is fresh and delicious. The staff is friendly and makes sure yr happy.
Nothing fancy, just really good food at a better than fair price served by wonderful people. It's the kind of place where you really want to be a regular, even though they are perfectly welcoming to strangers.
Second time there in 5 years with my sister Jen all is is still great food, service atmosphere love it
Very nice cozy place for comfort food. Staff is very nice.
cozy little spot loved it they have a specific menu to go by that's the only reason I gave a 4 for the food it was def delish
Always go to CID when in town. They have the best cook in the world named Joe. Can't say enough about him...
It’s a diner...diner food. Service was great. Standout for me was the chili. I actually stop in when I’m on the island just for their chili....it’s that good.
Classic American diner. You can feel the family vibe, mostly because it was a family running it haha. Food was good and the prices were even better.
A classic! Straightforward good value food in an old-time setting. The City Island Diner is an iconic wonderful part of the community.
Best burgers/ meat loaf outstanding/shepherds pot amazing
Food was Great and service on point very small place for dining but it's worth it very much. I can just get delivery next time
Our first time there, food was delicious, portions are perfectly sized, they kept our coffee cup full. Wait Staff was very polite and patient. Will definitely return
Came here because of Jerry Seinfeld's visit on his show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Real home town type diner atmosphere, good food and good service. You don't feel rushed to eat and leave. Was surprised to learn there were no meters and you could park on the street for free. Very nice place to visit.
Visited here today to get a cup of coffee ☕️ and Kim waited on me. Best place to eat! The staff is amazing Anna, James and Niko! My personal favorite place to be in while on the island. I always have a great time and my family loves it there too. Sincerely Mike!
This is my favorite spot on city Island. The people know me and my order. Very friendly and accommodating. It's a locals spot in a tourist island. Everyone knows each other and if you come two or three times, they will know you too. Prices are good.
Family-owned and friendly. We've been loyal diners for 20 years +. Always a welcome stop on visits to our island home. Check it put for great grub.
Had breakfast and sat at the bar. Everything was cooked perfectly! Haven't had that solid a breakfast in a while. Crispy bacon and the french toast was so yummy. Saw the cooks making pancakes, didnt order any but wished i had by the looks of them!
The best breakfast on City Island, It's like eating in a country diner in New England. Very friendly, great service. It's where all the townies eat.
A throw back to a different time! Fresh food, homey atmosphere- feels like being on vacation. Makes me remember my best family beach vacation breakfasts from my childhood.
Top 3 diner in the bx. Super friendly and they remember faces. And the food is fresh. Kids love it there also. Take your family and walk around city island. Check out clipper coffee a block over.
Excellent food, great service. I had a cheeseburger deluxe, awesome. Family owned for 28 years.
Fast, friendly and reasonable prices. Their Chicken Caesar Salad is one of the best I've ever had.
Everything here is delicious! I love their salads, wraps and burgers. The baked goods are made in-house and are exceptional. Just a great diner.
Great staff! The food is amazing as always. Mimosas on a Sunday morning are always good.
I visited here on July 12th 2025 and was serviced by Meghan who is customer friendly professional willing and has great mannerism and an asset to city island diner🩶🩶🩶
I really enjoyed my breakfast at City Island diner. The food was tasty and fresh and the service nice. They were very friendly and attentive. They seemed to follow the safety procedures and a sign is posted about maximum capacity. There was some great background music playing and the atmosphere was quite pleasant. I will definitely return and I highly recommend!
Highly recommend Enterprise, very tasty.
Love this place. Fast and friendly service. Great atmosphere. Everyone who works there is really nice.
Very cute little diner! The owner is so very attentive and the food was presented well. My friend and I had breakfast omelets and were very pleased. Would have given it 5 stars but the fruit side that I asked for wasn't exactly what had in mind. I would have been ok without it.
Today was our first time here! We absolutely loved everything! The food, the service, everything!
In 2011 I was here in our sailboat docked for ten days before moving up the Hudson - hurricane Irene was on her way. Today the memories flooded back in In a world that is constantly changing is City Island Diner. Good people. Good food. They will always have a piace in my heart.
WE LOVE IT HERE!!! My girlfriend and I come every time she’s in town for breakfast. We like to watch them cook. The food is delicious and priced very well. They have everything here. Staff is very friendly and work so efficiently it’s impressive.
I only go for breakfast but I've never been disappointed. They have a large selection of egg dishes, of which I've eaten most of them, and they're always prepared to perfection. It's a small venue (only holds maybe 35 people at capacity) so try to go on a weekday or for a late morning brunch.
Sime but Excellent home style menue. Soup 🍲 Burger 🍔 and Sandwich 🥪 😋 Very tasty - Specials too. Staff attentive & courteous - Quaint spot.
Great little diner on city Island. Big salad selection, all served in a stainless steel mixing bowl. My chicken Cesar wrap was served in a crispy wrap, full of fresh ingredients and tasty grilled chicken.
Great place to meet locals. Simple delicious American fare. Great takeout dinner options. Staff warm & welcoming. Worth a visit if your touring the island. Attached Snugg restaurant has great beer choices & good for group dinners.
Cozy little corner shop w/ tasty comfort food cooked the way we ordered. Great local vibes and incredible hospitalty. Staff could tell my girlfriend and i were not from the ‘hood, but showered us w/ kindness and offered us a handful of recommendations of things to do on the island while there.
Came here on a sunday for breakfast. I absolutely appreciate and love the Mom & Pop vibe of this cozy establishment. The place is clean. The staff are warm & friendly. The food was delicious. Prices are fair. My friend ordered blueberry pancakes and I ordered the spinach tomato feta omelette. It's definitely worth the trip. Wonderful experience. My new favourite place. Can't wait to come again and again. Enjoy :)
Sooooooooo delicious!!! Best milkshakes!! Delicious burgers!! And the best macaroni salad I have ever had! As good as my mom's!! Great service!!!
City Island Diner and The Snug are true local treasures. They’re owned by the same wonderful people and share a kitchen, but each has its own vibe and hours — and together they’re unbeatable. At the diner, my favorite dish is the Corned Beef Hash breakfast — classic, satisfying, and done exactly right. The fully loaded chili here is hands-down the best I’ve ever had. It’s rich, hearty, perfectly seasoned, and also shows up in their nachos, which makes them next-level comfort food. Beyond the food, what really sets these places apart is the people. Every server is genuinely kind, welcoming, and deeply plugged into the City Island community. You feel like a regular even on your first visit. Great food, great people, and real local character. City Island wouldn’t be the same without them. 💙🍽️🍺
No frills no thrills diner. Cozy vibes and good food. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. You can find your diner classics here. I recommend their disco fries.
Been here twice, very home style atmosphere and delicious food. Definitely worth the stop when in the area!
The Staff at this Diner are Outstanding. Donna, one of the owners is very attentive making sure the Customer is well taken care of. The servers esp . Vera are very friendly, and caring. Lorenzo, Joe, and the Chefs in the back serve well prepared, and tasty meals. Their soups esp. The clam chowders are delicious. City Island diner is very important to this community, and All who dine here for its traditional Diner experience which has been lost to the fast food chains.
Whatever is on the special board, order it! This is the neighborhood restaurant of your dreams. Beautiful people and great food. Kind and generous servers taking care of the regulars and newcomers alike. Excellent breakfast and lunch menus. Don’t skip out on the Bloody Mary with the best pickled green beans you’ve ever tasted.
I love this diner, although I'm not a "clam digger", I've been coming to this diner for many years. My daily routine is oatmeal and a coffee, but there is nothing better than sitting and having a meal here. You feel as if you are home, their service is outstanding, their food is beautifully done with that very caring classic diner feel. The minute you walk in you are greeted with a hello and also that wonderful diner smell. I can honestly say that I have never once had a bad meal here. This place is one of those hidden gems that is a must try!
I love that it's local! I've already been here twice with my family. The services waa excellent, the food was flavorful, and the coffee was perfect. The waitresses and waiters are wholesome and kind. Please try their homemade olive almond cake - it is outstanding! Look forward to going back next month! Supporting local business.
A delicious breakfast on City Island. I love this place! Just amazing home cooking and a great staff. Feels like you're on a Cape Cod vacation . It's a wonderful environment. Friendly service .This is the place for an Amazing breakfast or lunch to start your day...Comfort food... I shall return. ... 5 stars here !! & Thank you
I'd been looking forward to visiting this place for literally years, since I saw the "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" episode, and I was not disappointed. Cozy community spot with lots of beautiful energy and good vibes. The staff know all the regulars, the conversations you overhear are always surprising, and the community connects beautifully here. The food is also exquisite, and (unusual for a diner) CREATIVE, and the coffee is a very smooth and solid medium roast.
We went to celebrate a birthday with small dog in tow. The establishment sat us outside the patio looking over beautiful water view. Provided nice choice of appetizers and several different breads to nosh on. We ordered spaghetti with clams in marinated sauce; this special included soup or salad. The meal was very tasty. These were two huge plates -- could have shared and still feel full. Will happily try this place again. Our waiter has personality and checked to see if food was to our liking--nice touch. The bill for two people very reasonable.
Cycled 40 miles from south shore Long Island. Got here 9 am and not much options in the area. Spoke to a local jogger and he recommended City Island Diner for its food & comfort. I’m glad I took his advice. Walked in and was politely greeted to an old school diner with counter top seats. I got the front row bar stool facing the cook. Watching the orders come in and the cook dishing out his magic. It’s akin to watching a conductor at a symphony. Close your eyes and listen closely to the eggs cracking and being scrambled. You can smell the home fries with peppers & onions. Hear the sizzling of the bacon. My pastrami omelette arrived in a big way. Fantastic flavor & portion. 👍👍 Really enjoyed the meal and especially the hospitality. Loved the venue 🙏🏻
Being going here for years. Is a small place but very pleasant and very good servive. Love the food, especially the quesadillas.
Local folks serving good food at reasonable prices. They never pressure you to finish and leave.
Good, typical local diner, yet with the distinct ambience of City Island. Very friendly, even to us off- islanders. We had a good, hearty breakfast there.
Overall a nice, small diner. Food came out quick and the staff was friendly.
Very snug, warm place to eat. Friendly atmosphere, where you feel like everybody inside knows each other. Food was good and service was quick.
Excellent friendly local diner, can be cramped if locked but the crowd was moderate for a weekday afternoon. Service was super friendly and food was consistent for diner good.
It's the only diner on city island so options are a bit limited. But it's typical in diner fare. Doesn't stand out but isn't bad either.
Nice little spot for breakfast. A little pricey. But good comfort food. Friendly service. Food came quickly.
This past Sunday we were visiting friends in City Island . We desided to stop into the diner before seeing them . We have been there before . The diner is small , well lite , there are pictures on the walls of old sailing ships . The food is good . They many different foods to choose from . They also have bar right next door . That you can also sit down and have a bite to eat . If the diner is closed .
Called in for breakfast and eggs properly cooked and still moist. Staff very helpful and nice atmosphere. Banana bread to die for. Would recommend.
The City Island Diner is a small neighborhood eatery, long on character and short on floor space. It is often used as a location for television and film productions. The food is for the most part pretty good; the list of specialty sandwiches is huge, and the ones we've tried haven't disappointed. One of the best casual, non-seafood options on the Island.
The restaurant has a welcoming small town feeling. A lot of the patrons appeared to be regulars, and knew one another. The staff are nice. The food was fresh, and reasonably priced.
what a nice time have not been to a diner in 20 years plus had breakfast yesterday with friends and family excellent service and food will be back thank you for a great experience.
It's like walking into a time capsule. Not much has changed here and that's the beauty of it. City Island Diner has a long and narrow dining area, with the classic diner counter dominating a good part of the space. While the surroundings are clean, it's plain and unpretentious. That's not to suggest it's drab; more like it's so outdated that's it back in style again. The place has character and it's got a homey feel with really nice, friendly staff. There's a ton of expensive restaurants in City Island, so it's nice to know that when you're in the mood for no frills and cheap, you can come here for a solid cup of coffee and usual diner grub. Meeting a friend for lunch, I ordered the Mayflower, a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce and stuffing on rye bread. Although a bit dry, it hit the spot. A great go-to when you want cheap, quick and adequate. And true to its time capsule feel, they still don't take credit cards.
It’s a rainy day in Oct and I found myself in city island at 11:30am. I searched for a diner and found a great little place on the main drag. It’s as though time stood still . Friendly staff and customers. I needed a bowl of soup and it was great. According to the online menu it should have been $3. But I didn't complain when the check came with an updated price. The experience was worth it,
Has the first time patron I was pleasantly surprised by the speedy attention and delicious food served in this little diner on City island. The pancakes I ordered with sausage were fluffy and tasty. Depression of his quest hiding that many times and had ordered a full breakfast with an omelette juice and coffee. The service was quick, the staff friendly in this little Diner hidden away. If you are ever on the island drop in, you'll be glad you did.
City Island diner is a very well established, traditional diner. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. The staff reflect this ambiance too. A great variety of food, prepared in the open kitchen; fresh and delicious. Be prepared, the prices are a little high too.
Classic diner with small town feel and better than most diner food. Nice people with good service. Atmosphere is what it should be. I was happy with poor man's Quiche Lorraine (ham & cheese) and side Greek salad. They let you sit and relax.
Great local diner experience. I went for breakfast and enjoyed eggs and sausages with hash browns. I also enjoyed an ice coffee. The diner is in a great location to walk the island, window shop and enjoy the mystic vibe of the island. It is a small spot with a nice "Mom and Pop" vibe. During weekdays they offer breakfast specials for $6.95. One of my favorite aspects about the diner was the experience of being able to watch the chefs cook my breakfast in front of me on a grill visible from the stool seating. If you're not up for a whole meal they also have a small coffee bar available. Great service and staff.
I was at the Snug not the City Island Diner they are next to each other. Good food, I expect mine to be a bit more flavorful or spicy. I ordered the garlic butter wings.
Its City Island. Whats not to love? Great diner however, I ordered some green peas with my breakfast and they came partially hard and uncooked. Food was okay.
Nice friendly, cozy place where the locals congregate over a meat based or grilled cheesed meals. I would not recommend the homemade black bean burger. It's simple composition is black beans but the texture is like grilled mashed potatoes. My salad was just thrown together pieces of bagged salad drowning with an overwhelming vinegar laced house dressing. I gave it 3 stars b/c if I was a meat eater, this place works well. Lastly, $17 for a black bean burger (w/swiss cheese, grilled mushrooms & onions) onion rings, and salad was definitely not worth paying.
Small cute little place. Service was very slow for a Monday evening. Only 2 other tables were there, and it took 40 minutes to finally get our food. Prices are not good, $10 for a wrap that didn't come with an sides. Food was average at best, but I guess that's good for the locals.
I pass by this dinner for many years and I was wondering how the breakfast will be,from outside the place look great,I love dinners..the service was bad and the home fries were terrible...no taste and greasy..but the coffee was great
food is good unfortunately if they don't know you are a local they'll make you feel unwelcomed. it's happened to me on multiple occasions... also i've paid three different prices for a bacon egg and cheese on a roll depending on who is at the register. price varied between 3.75 and 4.75
In an age where everything is moving away from cash, they charge you extra for using a card. Not to mention they practically charge Manhattan prices for their dishes. Gave them 2 stars (instead of 1) because the food and service was okay.
City Island Diner's kitchen also serves the tavern next door and that is where we ate. My husband ordered the Wexford grilled cheese and it was disappointing. The ham is just diced deli meat and the onions were not cooked enough. It just felt like a rushed job. Macaroni salad was fine. Waitress was charming.
TLDR in terms of Covid-19 safety and general dining experience this was about as bad as it gets. I'll break it down piece by piece trying to be accurate. Food- My girlfriend ordered two eggs with potatoes and whole wheat toast. It took about an hour from order to delivery which was harder to be O.K with as a group ordered after us ate and then left. The eggs and potatoes were brought alone and without the toast. I was going to speak up but my girlfriend said they will remember. After 5 minutes I asked and the waitress came by, she seemed overwhelmed because she was always focused on something else and never made eye contact. It made her hard to hear and meant she often misheard us. It took 4 tries for her to hear my girlfriend say whole wheat. My girlfriend always finishes her food and did not finish this which was partly due to the fact we ended up leaving but also she said the food was pretty average and the eggs were cooling off by the time the toast came. I ordered a BLT with a side of fries and a coffee. The coffee was quick and good. I had to turn down about 5 offers for a refill which was very well done and a high point. My food took over 75 minutes. The man at the front repeatedly asked around for my food. (I heard because we were seated next to the kitchen) about 15 minutes after my girlfriend got her toast my food came out of the kitchen and was brought outside. She came back in and was redirected to me and I immediately noticed it had mayo on it. I do not eat egg yolk or vinegar so I alerted the waitress. Her response was to tell me to let her know next time because they would never leave it on had I let them know. This is not a very good response in terms of hospitality and is only made worse by the fact they don't list it on their menu. When I told her that she said I'll let ownership know as that's on them, once again a reasonable response but not delivered with any hospitality or more importantly acknowledgement of the fact I was just accused of mis-ordering. That for me was the final straw and I declined the offer to have it re-done. I went to pay immediately so I could leave and the man at the front decided to comp us for the wait, delays, and mix ups which felt fair and right. Waitress- Didn't make eye contact when talking to us or handing me the menus or food. It's small but it would have prevented us from having to repeat as many things or feel like we are "catching" things instead of being handed them. Covid Safety- The outdoor dining was full so they said we could eat indoors but we would have to have our temps taken and give a phone number, for contact tracing I assume. It was empty, the extra precaution at the door felt comforting, and we we very hungry so we went in. Immediately my girlfriend looked uncomfortable and when I remarked that half the staff seemed to have their masks hanging below the nose, (Which is the ok in some areas I think? Who know with all the levels of contradicting ordinances) she said look at the chef. One of the two chefs we could see had his mask under his chin the whole hour and a half we were in there. All staff, but ESPECIALLY the chef, should wear masks correctly if not for health at least for optics seeing as the kitchen is visible from the dining area. It was overall just sad to bring my girlfriend to a diner me and my family have loved for years operating in this state. To sit for an hour for food that didn't come out right as we could see staff maskless and often arguing.
Don't understand the good reviews of this place at all! Cramped and stale, ordered a soda- brought me a can- I'm used to diners having fountain drinks. We both ordered fish and chips- not good- I have had better at Long John Silvers. He brought our check- saw that I had a credit card in my hand- said cash only and also took check with him and said would be back. He added an extra dollar to each of our orders- the menu said 14.95 and he put 15.95. So not only did our server intentionally rip us off- the whole experience was a let down- this place is a major SKIP!
This past Saturday I went here with my family for the 1st time and the heavy set Caucasian women I believe she was one of the owners. Greeted every Caucasian table asking how was there food and service. She decided to skip around our table and continue on. The fact was was with a child and she noticed the poor manners of the owner. On top of that, they have one waitress ( Asian) who is very attentive, sweet, and provided great service. She went out front for 5 minutes the same heavy set women told the cashier in front to watch our table. We provided feedback before leaving to the cashier who is also an owner. Simply stated that was surprising. NO APOLOGY!! NOTHING!! I’ll never return to this establishment.
We had a very bad experience at City Island Diner and won’t be returning. We clearly explained that my wife is gluten-free due to celiac disease and asked specifically about the salad she wanted to order. We were told the goat cheese and the dish contained no gluten. When the salad arrived and she began eating, she discovered gluten in the goat cheese — something that should have been communicated and taken seriously when we asked. For anyone with celiac or food allergies, this felt careless and unsafe. On top of that, the first thing we always do when eating out is order food for our daughter. We ordered her pancakes with fruit, and only later found out the order was never even placed. We ended up waiting for food that was never coming. The whole visit felt unprofessional and frustrating from start to finish. We chose to leave and did not end up paying. Based on our experience, we would recommend staying away if you value accurate information and proper handling of dietary needs.
used to come here frequently until I had to wait for 1 hour and 15 min for my food. To add on to the wait, the table that got there 15 minutes after me got their food served first. I stood up and walked out because how was that ever okay,...? that's beyond me. I'm a good tipper & polite, but that pushed it. I got up and left. Haven't been since, I drive to another dinner in new rochelle.
This diner needs to keep longer hours. Closing at 3PM for a diner is a joke and bad for business. Diners want a place they can go to that fits their needs, circumstances and schedules. The drink prices are absurdly high here. Two decaf cappuccinos should not cost $16! Worst yet, they weren't that large and tasted terribly flat. They were also out of caffeinated cappuccinos which I wanted! The brownie my friend ordered was hard, old and dry tasting. When I wanted a regular caffeinated coffee after drinking the lousy decaf cappuccino I was refused service because they told me the restaurant was closing. How to ruin my afternoon out with my partner! After all this I then asked for the bill and then needed to contest the outrageous prices of the decaf cappuccinos. The waitress was not willing to compromise on the price at all. We will never be returning. This is no way to treat the public or run a business.
