If you’ve always wanted to travel to Guatemala, IX Restaurant serves truly authentic Guatemalan food that will make you feel like you teleported to Guatemala with every bite. As soon as I walked in the vibes, music, and energy put me in a good mood. What really sets IX apart, though, is the service. The staff is incredibly warm, attentive, and welcoming. In just my second visit they truly make you feel like part of the family. Between the authentic food, the energetic atmosphere, and the top-notch hospitality, [and the fact my food arrived quickly - I prdered El Patron Burrito] IX Restaurant is a place that inspires you to come back to try every dish. I'm already scanning the menu to plan my third visit.
Dessert here goes CRAZY. Plantain mole, rosemary churros, and chocolate were so good. Excited to come back to try brunch!
Such a vibrant place with a cozy, welcoming atmosphere and truly authentic, delicious food, my heartfelt gratitude to the chef! 👏🏼 Everything I tried was wonderful - the food, cocktails, wine, and of course their famous cocoa, which is something truly special. This place is a real local gem 🐆🫶🏻🤎
Just a wonderful experience. My recommendation: a Famosa beer, a bowl of Pepian stew, and a hot chocolate for dessert. It will cure whatever ails you!
This is my favorite restaurant in the whole city. The soups/stews like the Pepian are remarkable. The cinnamon cocoa is unbelievable. Love the warm ambiance too. Always leave feeling so satisfied and happier than when I arrived.
At the behest of my 7-year-old, I am giving “five stars on everything!” He is happily chowing down on chips and bean dip with a cup of cacao as the snow flurrys down. But seriously this place is so crucial. So delicious, chef Jorge knows what he is doing. Try all the soups. Try all the omelets. Drink the coffee. Why are we here on this earth if not to eat a good soup once in a while.
Great food, we got the fig and goat cheese dip, a few drinks and two of the main soups. Everything was fantastic and they have a live band on Saturdays. Great place to bring a date.
Perfect cold weather food! The ambiance is warm and inviting, the staff are attentive without being overbearing, and the food is excellent. The portions are fair for the price, especially if you get it delivered — I’ve been able to get 2-3 meals out of the soup when getting it to go. Highly recommend the Pepian and Caldo Tlapeño Rojo soups. And if it’s cold out, get the cacao hot chocolate!
One of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn. Delicious food and great service always. They also have live music sometimes! The carrot soup is one of my go-to orders, along with the rosemary cacao drink. The goat cheese omelette is also super yummy and filling. I’m Mayan from my mom’s side, so this cuisine and decor always makes me feel close to my late grandmother, and is total comfort food. Love this place
I have been in this restaurant twice and the food is always tasty! 😋 They give you a complimentary appetizer with mole and nachos, the portions are generous and the flavors are just right! I had the mimosa with Pina Colada it’s cute and goes well with the sauce. The only suggestion is to get a better A/C system I was sweating 😓
One of my absolute favorite spots — it feels like a second home! The food? Always super fresh and packed with flavor. The vibe is amazing live music, tasty national drinks, and seriously awesome customer service. And here’s a little secret… they actually have a secret menu! I love ordering from it; it’s like unlocking bonus levels of delicious, authentic Guatemalan flavors. Every time I go, it’s a fun and tasty adventure. Can’t wait for my next visit!
I think this might be my favorite restaurant in the city. The service is wonderful, the food is so good- the vegetarian options as well. I rarely have room for dessert but this place is worth a stop by during the day for the hot chocolate and dessert and a separate return for dinner because it's fantastic and substantial. The art, ambiance, and music make for a wonderful experience. I learned they have live music on Saturdays and few other occasions as well. 10/10 zingy salad is so good and I usually go for a soup!
Arrived with a large party of 10 and this cozy vibrant spot did NOT disappoint. The food was authentic, delicious and plated lovely. Flavor profile was cilantro and acid based which being Guatemalan tasted just like home this is a spot you should not miss. All in all a great dining experience from apps to meals to the mixed drinks, teas and hot chocolate. *chefs kiss*
Got hungry walking through the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, went to Google to get to a good sit-down eatery, found this. What a treat! The reviews are spot on- the Pepian was superb, but the Jocon was amazing and stole the show. The hot chocolate was just the right balance is sweetness. The lavender hot chocolate was a nice twist to the old recipe. We finished with a round of rosemary churros - perfect ending!
The flavors of this restaurant are so new and fresh to me. It makes me want to go to Guatemala immediately. The soups are out of control delicious. If you’re dining with another person and you can each order a different soup and ask them to divide it and you can try two. I’ve tried all the soups now and always go with the same person. The tres leche is probably the best I’ve ever had. So so good.
TL;DR version- Some high highs and some very low lows. Hot Figs was a fun app. By a mile, the soups were the favorites, so I would recommend the Pepián or Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo. Nice happy hour and a large chocolate drink selection. As per usual, removed some of the extra things in this review from the start due to space There were a few nice hot sauces on the table, with the red one reminding me of salsa macha as it had a smoky kick and a spicier green sauce reminiscent of ají verde. They gave us some complimentary blue corn chips and a very mild black bean dip, which was tasty enough and hard to complain about, as it was free. From the appetizers, we got the Hot Figs for $15.95, consisting of honey goat cheese, corn tortilla chips, and plum + pumpkin seeds. This was a unique and fun blend and reminded me more of something you would find in a wine bar. The mix of sweet and salty, with a bit of crunch from the seeds, was nice. This was good, and I would recommend it for a table rather than for a solo diner. There was also The Zingy Salad for $21.95, featuring zucchini spirals, yuzu, tomato, onion, cilantro, pumpkin seeds, and a jalapeño infusion. $18.95. The salad was fine with a bit of crunch and a mild spiciness. It was fine, though a bit wet, for lack of a better word. The best dishes of the night were the soups, which each had its own distinct flavor profile. My sight presence went to the Pepián for $21.95, consisting of chicken, pumpkin/sesame seeds, green tomatillo, cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, carrots, chili coban/pasta/guaque, and potato + rice. There was plenty of tender chicken inside, with the soup having a nice roasted flavor with some spice and a bit of sourness. The potatoes and rice on the bottom added more sustenance to this dish. Almost equally delicious was the Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo for a dollar more with shredded chicken, tomato, black pepper, garlic, onions, peas, chickpeas, corn, achiote, chipotle, Monterey jack cheese, and crunchy blue corn tortilla chips. By comparison, this was a bit heartier, with the melted cheese and shredded tortilla chips inside, similar to soups found in Mexican cuisine. While I also liked the mix of veggies a bit more in this one, as it added a bit more texture, I still slightly preferred the flavor of the other soup, as I usually prefer a bit more spice. The rest of the food was fine. The TPC sandwich for $19.95 with chicken, peanut butter, coconut cream, ginger, cilantro, pickled carrots, and lime was fine. For the number of ingredients, I found it a bit sweet, likely from the cream and the peanut butter mix. The bread was nice, but it also fell apart. It came with a nice side salad with a good vinaigrette. The most expensive at $24.95 were the Slow Cooked BBQ Ribs, consisting of baby back ribs with rice and beans. The ribs were almost a bit too tender as they lacked any bite, which was nice, but the sauce was a bit too generic tasting, reminding me of Sweet Baby Ray's or something similar. The rice and beans were standard. This was also OK. Next came some dessert. There was first the $12.95 Rosemary Churros served with dulce de leche & chocolate dips. While I'm not sure if it worked, the rosemary did add a unique smell and a bit of flavor, and at least it wasn't generic. The churros themselves were hot, and the sauces were standard, with my preference being the dulce de leche. I also ordered a Champurrado for $7.95, which was fine. It wasn't as thick as I expected, though perhaps the style is a bit different than the champurrados I rarely buy from Mexican street carts. The chocolate flavor was very nice, though, and I like that it wasn't too sweet. Another person got a $4 Alfajor, which I got a bite of, which was standard. This place is a bit hard to rate. The two soups were wonderful, I liked the appetizers, and I found a couple of the other dishes just OK. Overall, it was a good meal, but I'm not craving to go back. This would be the perfect 3.5, but I'll round up as that doesn't exist.
The food is delicious and I will keep coming here. I love the carrot soup, the heuvos rancheros, the sandwiches are terrific. Lots of vegetarian options. The coffee is not great. At this point, I have tried all their coffee drinks and unfortunately, they are all pretty blah. If you are going to serve breakfast and brunch, coffee game need to be good. Also, this place does not give you an itemized receipt. They just tell you what your bill is and then show you the tip screen. Please stop doing that. The person paying a bill has the right to know exactly what they are paying for. If you’re not going to bring a paper receipt, at least show the receipt on the screen instead of just asking for a tip. Don’t make it awkward for your customers. The people running this place are very sweet and I wanna keep supporting this business, but the bill-paying moment is shady and awkward.
Pepian soup was 4 out of 5, besides the great flavor and taste that I was getting from each ingredient I couldn't stop tasting the bitter note at the end of each spoonful, perhaps too much cinnamon was added. The sandwich veg, egg, and cheese was 4.8 - when I held the sandwich, the bottom bun was soggy but the flavor was very good. The salad served with the sandwich was a 5. Simple, flavorful and pleasant smell. The best part was me and my partner planned to divide our food when we got it, but we received two separate dishes, each had a small sandwich and bowl of soup, I was so excited! Top tier customer service.
Good place. The pepian soup let the cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, pumpkin, and chicken stand on their own. Highly recommend. The ründstuck sliders had a pernil too dry for me. The tortilla de huevos had the kind of egg that is really fluffy and wide with crisp on both sides, which you either think is fun or think is weird. I think it's fun. Coffee was good as well. The ambience is so cool, very much an inviting place to eat and socialize.
Amazing Guatemalan food! Loved it here! Great ambience & atmosphere. Beautiful interior decor with so much color and life. Place is tight though. Inside and outside dining available. Loved the cardamom cocoa, but wasn't a fan of the iced chai. Got one of the most recommended soups. The soup/stew was devine! The green eggs sandwich was delicious! The service was a little slow but definitely will return & Highly recommend.
I was in the neighborhood and was looking for a place where I can sit to drink and eat something. The bartender took a few minutes till she got my order. I went with baby ribs with black beans and rice&green beans and I can say that I was pretty disappointed. The ribs were drowning in the bbq sauce which I really dislike this. I also had to eat separate the ribs and the beans since I didn’t feel like a good taste. I did not like the rice. Nobody asked me how I was doing, if I liked my food or if I want another drink. After I finished my food, the plates were sitting there and I was totally ignored. Other bartenders/ servers don’t look at you and the person who took my order was busy with an order on the computer God knows what. Someone else pre bus the plates. Since it’s Brooklyn probably the service here is expected to be too low.
Yeah no, first and last time there, they don’t give a … about their new customers, was excited to try the food but instead got completely ignored, waited for 10 minutes like idiots in the doors to realize that we have to sit ourselves, tried to ask a guy on a bar about it and he just ignored us looking straight to the face, while we were waiting a lot of tables got busy and we had to squeeze ourselves in because again didn’t know we had to sit wherever we want. Didn’t even try the food and left upset.
