Opinions de Sailor Brooklyn
It’s small and intimate with a beautiful interior. The staff are thoughtful and calm. I really loved every dish I tried. The starter pâté was packed with flavor which was enhanced with a bit of lemon. The cod was perfectly cooked and the flavors were delicate and subtle. Really well balanced. I forgot how much I love peas, the peas really were excellent. I tried their special asparagus , tis the season and that was also wonderful. I can’t fault their dishes and their service. Everything was impeccable. I would certainly go back again although probably wouldn’t get the ginger cake as it was decent but certainly not on the same level as the other plates I had.
I love this place. The food is scrumptious, the service is extraordinarily quick, and the atmosphere is relaxing. I adored the devilled eggs, the Caesar salad, and the almond tart! They were all excellent! The service was friendly and fast! We even got a nice view of the kitchen, which looked beautiful! I am glad me and my family went here!
We came here for the French Toast with Maple Syrup & Vanilla Cream. It was nice and soft in the middle and crispy on the outside - all sitting in a pool of delicious syrup. The vanilla cream on top was a fantastic addition that really brought out the flavor. The best way to describe the flavor of the French Toast was that it tasted like Garrett’s CaramelCrisp popcorn - made into a bread pudding.
Everything here is so delicious. I don’t usually have seafood but this place is seafood heavy restaurant so I had no choice but to have those seafood dishes and it was so good. I tried two desserts and those are amazing. Even if they sell only these during lunch, I would come here to have those. Definitely recommend.
Had an unbelievable experience at Sailor. Was a fan of Gabriel and April's restaurants in the past but first time at Sailor and it really delivered! The food, beverages and service were all top notch. And the vibe was excellent too. Will definitely go back!
We loved our dinner here! Really happy Sailor has opened in the neighborhood and their menu actually is in line with being a neighborhood bistro - great food and drinks with approachable selections and pricing. The sweetbreads were hands down the best I’ve ever had - cooked to perfection. The fish was great, sides and desert too. Probably the best part of the night was the service from everyone there - everyone was amazing, friendly and super nice. Lastly, the space is beautiful too, everything is thought out. Not something I normally notice at restaurants, but their bathroom was beautiful too! Hats off to the design team. Will be back!
Exceptional service. Amazing atmosphere. Delightful food. Although the menu was simple, the quality was evident in every dish especially the sea bass, the devilled eggs and the chicken. I believe the prices were reasonable for experience (I was not the one paying however) and overall it was a fantastic time.
In brief, Sailor deserves the praise it is getting. If the menu is not outrageously inventive, it delivers high quality, fresh, French-American comfort food with an Asian-y nod. I had the pork shoulder, extremely well cooked, flakey and moist, the arctic char and proflitoreles. The meal cost a pretty penny but not too outrageous. Its nice and considerate that they have a red and white on tap for $9. Service couldn’t have been warmer and courteous. It might become a destination restaurant but -as others have said- retains a local feel. It was packed the Thursday night I went so prepare to wait.
I had an amazing experience here for a birthday dinner. The server and entire staff were wonderful, attentive and fun to be around. The atmosphere was lovely- great music, not too noisy. The food was fantastic- one dish after the next. My favorite was the carrot and avocado dish… out of this world. Bravo!
Really great edition to the neighborhood. Food was delicious, ambiance is lovely, and the decor is fabulous. Pacing was a bit slow though. Recs - bread with leek butter (incredible), stuffed Swiss chard, roasted chicken (so tender and flavorful), and the ginger cake (omg at that cream).
I think I've been to almost all of April's restaurants, all were great and enjoyable. But this one, ahhhhhh this one is transcendent. It's kind of like a beautiful evening when all the stars align, and life seems perfect. Friendly, warm, knowledgeable. And, the food was even better. Each dish had its particular voice and they all sang in harmony. I would travel a long time to come here. I'm very lucky however.........I don't have to.
Had been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time - set a rest notify and was able to snag a Saturday 7pm table. Beautiful restaurant with a nautical atmosphere. Every course was delicious - started off with the arctic char pate, then the caesar salad and the chicken. Finished off with the vanilla ice cream with caramel. The chicken portion was very generous. Loved the caesar salad - perfectly dressed, and the pate was my favorite part of the meal. Great service and affordable!
We ordered Sailor’s takeaway Thanksgiving menu and it was AMAZING. There was soooo much food, and the quality was top notch after following the reheating instructions. Sooo easy to set up and clean up. Would 100% do this again. Thank you to the wonderful team at Sailors that gave us such a wonderful home Thanksgiving experience
Update: came here for brunch and verdict is that dinner is much better. The brunch chicken salad was good but didn’t like the gentleman’s relish (toast with anchovies butter)—half the bread was not edible as it was burnt black! Have been here multiple times and the food has been amazing. My favorites were mostly the apps and side dishes: arctic char pate, mussel toast, pumpkin, and the ice cream puffswere all sooooo good—highly recommend all of these. The main entres like steak, sea bass, and another curry fish was good as well, altho more standard. The ginger cake celeriac were maybe my least favorite dishes. Celeriac was a bit too buttery and sour and the ginger cake was dry.
My wife and I celebrated our anniversary by trying our luck as a walk-in last night. It was our first time at Sailor and we had the fortune to sit at their incredibly designed, week-old, new bar extension. Incredible all-around. No detail is overlooked. The service is warm and friendly, the food is better than several Michelin restaurants where we have eaten, and the owner Gabriel was making sure that everybody felt at home. You can tell that the people who work there, like working there. That kind of says it all.
I enjoyed a delightful lunch at Sailor. The interior was charming, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. I sat at the bar and was quickly attended to. The burger was excellent, and I would come back for it again. I am also planning to try their dinner. Highly recommend if you're in the neighborhood and can snag a reservation.
Sailor in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, showcases Chef April Bloomfield’s culinary prowess in a striking comeback. Opting for her signature burger, a nod to her famed dish at The Spotted Pig, I found it rich and expertly crafted, perfectly encapsulating Bloomfield's expertise in meat-centric cuisine. What truly caught my eye, however, was the side of french fries that accompanied my burger. Crisp, golden, and utterly delicious, these fries were a standout, nearly overshadowing the burger itself—a sentiment echoed by many, as almost every table seemed to indulge in a serving. The upscale, nautical decor of Sailor enhances the dining experience, making it a prime spot to enjoy Bloomfield's renowned dishes in an inviting atmosphere.
Although trying to get a reservation is like winning the Lotto, it was worth the effort. We had a fabulous experience last night. From the warm welcome from Allie - to the glowing ambiance, the delicious dishes (especially the fried artichokes and filleted whole branzino!), the expert wine guidance from the sommelier, the attentive service from Kaiden, and the overseeing, attentive eye of Daniel, the manager - we were truly impressed. Kudos to April, Dan and the whole team. We hope to return as soon as we can grab another reservation.
We had a great meal. Our server was helpful and nice. We had a vegetarian with us and there were enough options for them. We tried a lot of the menu, the fish mains were perfectly cooked, some people previously had said some of the food was too salty but we didn't have that experience and the olive oil cake was great
The ginger cake with a huge blot of whipped cream at Sailor is the best. But the profiteroles are sort of magical. The puff pastry crackles as you chew, and the sauce is not the usual chocolate but a rich, dark caramel. There is also a roasted fennel bulb, sticky with caramelized pan juices, laid over creamed goat cheese and herbs — a nod and a wink to Boursin. Slicing into the sphere of wrapped radicchio leaves, I discovered an interior of fragrant rice studded with firm, creamy borlotti beans. Taking a bite of this mixture, I learned later, vegan—was like sinking into a quicksand of warmth and flavor. The leaves of the radicchio imparted a lingering hint of bitterness, a scalpel through the savory roundness of everything else. This is the dish, I thought to myself—the dish of the restaurant, perhaps the dish of the year.
After being quoted a four-hour wait (for one guest) at another restaurant in the neighborhood, I was welcomed into Sailor within minutes of arrival. Everything was excellent from the food to drinks to service, and Tina at the bar was phenomenal. As someone who lives in the neighborhood, this was my first-time visit, but certainly won’t be my last.
Had a lovely dinner at Sailor, from the food to service. Highlights were the smoked arctic char pâté (esp if you’re looking for some bread to start with), braised squid + spinach stew (also came with two slices of toasted bread), stuffed Swiss chard was so unexpectedly delicious, and the Bass as a main was great albeit a little on the smaller side. Leave room for dessert because you’ll want to end your meal with the profiteroles.
Simply one of the best meals I have had. It is recognizable food cooked to such a high standard with a fantastic wine selection. You don't notice the skill that it takes to execute at this level.
As usual, Chef April nails the familiar yet unusual flavour, texture and presentation of her food! Deliciousness in every bite. We made a special trip from LA and was impressed from the moment we stepped foot in the restaurant from the warm greeting from Gabe, the care and attention of our server, the decor and atmosphere and of course, the FOOD. We ordered too much deliberately to taste as much as we could and have leftovers the next day. The toast with green sauce, mussel toast, roasted fennel with goats cheese, artic char, chicken, pork, profiteroles, fig almond tart and seasonal ice cream - a feast for two. It was fantastic for leftovers the next day! Can’t wait to find an excuse to come back!
Been to Sailor twice now (once for drinks & snacks at the bar and once for dinner) and it excels in both scenarios. Came in with 2 friends and ordered eggs mayo, and 2 toasts with a couple of glasses of wine and it was perfect. I visited last weekend and did a full dinner, starting with the arctic char & toast, the beets dish, and the fried onion app (which was excellent). Our mains were the bavette steak (cooked perfectly) and the cod which I liked and my friend really enjoyed. For dessert we ordered the profiteroles and omg, you need to save room for those. They have awesome wines by the glass (white burgandy! And a Nebbiolo blend!) but if you are a martini person, it comes with a sidecar & is excellent, so you should definitely order one. Service is on point & extremely knowledgeable about ingredients, which is always nice. Sailor is a great night out, it feels like a cozy neighborhood restaurant but everything is executed so well, and the cooking is so delicious, you’ll leave on a high that you weren’t expecting.
We had an amazing dinner here (unfortunately forgot to photo the Entree 🤦♂️) The preparation and presentation were both delightful. The service was of the highest class with out being haughty. Will definitely recommend to friends & come back to explore more of the menu. Top marks all around! 🙏
Came with some friends on a Saturday night, we lined up at 4:30 and were able to get in for the first seating. The space is beautiful and service is lovely. We ordered the pork rillette, anchovies, a Greek mashed potato herb dip, Caesar salad, stuffed radicchio, pork shoulder and the bass with sun chokes. The pork dishes were the biggest hits! The rillettes were so creamy and the pork shoulder was the most tender and flavorful I've ever had. Drinks were great, the dirty martini is served with a side car, very classy. For desserts we ordered the profiteroles with salted caramel and the almond tart with rhubarb and creme fraiche. A lovely way to end an incredible meal.
Don’t skip this review… Sailor is all it’s hyped up to be and more. First time here, Brunch is only on the weekends. Amazing. French toast is a must. The French toast is so warm, rich in flavor. Waiter informed me it’s because it’s soaked overnight. Quality is top notch. The mix of the maple syrup and the vanilla cream enhances the French toast flavor. The bacon, amazing. Thick cut, 3 pieces. Highly recommend with the French toast. The Yogurt with Coconut Granola was okay, would not get it again. The pear butter was new to me, didn’t go well with the yogurt. The Soft Omelette with Conte, was good, very “herby”. The only negative, we were in the back and there’s two tables of twos on the side and a table of 4 in the middle. The table of four should be to a side, because during our visit, we had an extremely loud group in the middle that just makes it hard to talk to each other and listen. Nonetheless will visit again.
Awesome dinner here with my wife. The star of the show was the chicken (& the potatoes that come with...maybe the best potato in the city). Dessert was killer - I had the profiteroles, wife had the custard tart. Both elite. She's also pregnant and staff was super helpful and accommodating (s/o Luke & Alexis).
Upscale neighborhood spot. Leans more towards seafood (makes sense given the nautical theme) but still with very well executed meat dishes as well, the sweetbreads were outstanding. Reminds me a little bit of Dame in the west village minus the fish and chips. Walked in without a reservation about 10 minutes before opening time. Definitely want to come back and try the rest of the menu.
Perfect dinner out, we loved everything about this spot. Local feel with elevated vibes and truly outstanding chefs and service. We ate at the bar and genuinely appreciated John’s gentle service. Apps were the staffed radicchio with a delicious red wine reduction sauce, and the baby squid with a tart creamy gravy style sauce. For entrees we had the bass- absolutely melt in your mouth with a delicate near-curry sauce, beef tongue cooked perfectly tender, truly exceptional roast chicken with to die for potatoes and simply delicious halibut with potato flakes. Topped off with the ice cream profiteroles with a burnt caramel that paired perfectly with an espresso. Everything about this meal was just what we wanted for a lowkey and memorable date night, start to finish.
I read about Sailor and decided to walk in on a Wednesday night. Thankfully I was able to get a table without a wait, which won’t last long with all the amazing press that’s been coming out. The vibe was very local, low key yet still quietly buzzy. The olives were so flavorful. The server was so hospitable and brought the menu to life extremely well. I don’t typically love mussels but the mussel toast is incredible. The warm small plates were a nice touch. I knew that it would be difficult for any main course to follow the appetizer. I ordered the bass and it wasn’t amazing. It felt slightly tough, and the flavors were good, just more subtle compared to the mussels. The braised chicories were just ok for me. I didn’t want the meal to end on that note, so I contemplated between the pear tart and the ginger cake. I wanted something that packed a punch, and the server recommended the ginger cake, and said it has shreds of ginger. It tastes like a Christmas cake would, and I’m glad I listened to him! It was a wonderful date spot, and hope to return soon before it gets mobbed by all the foodies!
They were exceptional, I went closer to 5:30 with my date on a Saturday and they were fully booked but still managed to served me! Their service is top of the line, food was exceptional and their skin contact wine selection is beautiful! I highly recommend going there and coming back! We had each item from the menu! Definite a top place! We were very pleased.
Sailor is sits in my favorite category of restaurants that serve beautiful, creative, and delicious dishes without relying on needlessly opulent or inaccessible ingredients. We were genuinely really impressed with the composition of each dish, one after another. Also major shoutout to our server, Camille, for being super knowledgeable about the menu and super patient in walking us through it despite the busyness of the restaurant. Overall, this restaurant is well worth its reputation!
Writing this as I’m completely horizontal after having such a decadent brunch meal. The food coma is SO WORTH it. I’ll definitely come back again for brunch and hope to try for dinner. The details: I had a reservation at 12:30pm on a Saturday for a party of 5. We arrived on time but front of house needed a few minutes to get the table ready for us which was no biggie. 1) Ginger Cake - Solid. Sweet but not too sweet and had a good ginger flavor without it being overpowering. 2) French Toast - Incredible and a must order. I’ve never had French toast like this before. Super crispy and toasty outer ring with the most moist and almost creamy center. 3) Burger - Incredible and a must order. It was very salty but I’d rather that than it be under seasoned. Helps that we were drinking alcohol to cut thru the salt. 4) Grilled Cheese & Tomato Sandwich - Meh, you can skip. The crust is quite nice but this was waaay too rich for the table.
Amazing food! Loved the stuffed Swiss chard, and couldn’t believe how delicious the hemp and yogurt dip dish wash! All the other food were also sooo yummy, but as for the desserts I’m not sure why their profiteroles are such big deal when the ginger cake was by far better! We also really appreciate how kind and cool our waitress was. Definitely one of our best food experiences in NYC
We'd been for dinner, but finally made it for brunch. We were pleasantly surprised to get a table for 2 with no wait at 11:45 on a Sunday. The vibe is relaxing and service is friendly, but not too involved. Our bloody Mary's were simple and strong. Since we were hungry we started with the special huckleberry scone and added a side of bacon. We were glad we did because the avocado toast+egg and Turkish eggs were delicious but not not big plates. All the plates were delicious, but I can say hands down that's the best bacon I've ever had. We'll be back!
We had lovely birthday lunch. The light in dining room is beautiful in the afternoon. The acoustics are very good. At nice to be able to hear each other Gorgeous looking and colorful "green" salad with castelfranco, frisee and raddichio and excellent fries. I had a perfectly cooked piece of bass with lentils and Swiss Chard. My friends both enjoyed the chicken and grain dish. The caramel almond tart with pear was both unusual and delicious. The host was very gracious and the wait staff was earnest and friendly even if they seemed a little inexperienced. Would definitely come back!
We stopped into Sailor to grab brunch this morning and had a lovely time! To share, we got the French toast (absolutely to die for - a MUST) and thick cut bacon. For drinks, we got the Bloody Mary and cappuccino. For our mains, we had the everything bagel with lox (so good!!!), Turkish eggs and fennel scramble. No crumbs were left behind - we loved it here!!
Sailor in Fort Greene is an absolute gem! The food was exceptional from start to finish. We started with the French toast topped with vanilla cream—yes, it’s sweet, but it’s worth every bite! Then, I shared the hamburger and Turkish eggs, and honestly, it’s hard to pick a favorite. The hamburger, with its perfectly cooked patty and caramelized onions, will definitely be on my mind for a while. The Turkish eggs were also incredibly flavorful and satisfying. Great vibes, great food—can’t wait to come back!
We loved brunching here! Delicious food, great service (thanks, Lea!), and cozy atmosphere. The juicy burger is making my mouth water just thinking about it, served with perfect fries. The yin to my yang ordered the chicken salad. It was light and healthy (everything that my burger wasn’t) but also good. We ordered the French toast for dessert and it was so good that it made me moan with joy. It’s surely the best in NYC. The vanilla cream served with it is whipped heaven. Thanks, sailor!!
Sailor is an absolute gem! From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome with their friendliness and attentiveness. The cleanliness of the space was impeccable, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Now, let’s talk about the food, hands down, the French toast is the best I’ve ever had. Every bite was perfect! Beyond that, the rest of the menu was incredibly unique and full of bold, delicious flavors that you don’t find anywhere else. I can’t wait to go back and try more. Highly recommend!
We celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary at Sailor and it did not disappoint. Ella, our wonderful server, made us feel special right away and was knowledgeable of the menu. We had the deviled eggs, Caesar salad, bass, roast chicken, and ended with profiterole ice cream sandwiches with two candles. Everything was delicious. Highly recommend!
Wow, this is the best dinner meal that I have had in a while. All the dishes we got were amazing. Perfect seasoning, and some twist idea of the flavors made the food very unique. The staffs were friendly and professional. Overall, the experience feels high quality and yet comfortable. I will visit here again soon, hope they wont become too popular that I will have difficulty to make a reservation.
Such a cute little brunch spot. We decided to share everything, which felt like the right move because we could sample each dish. The burger was delicious, cooked perfectly medium rare with that juicy, just right center. But my personal favorite? The Turkish eggs. Absolute saucy perfection. They came with a puffy flatbread that paired amazingly with all that rich, flavorful goodness, though I do wish the bread had been bigger. The sauce was just too good, and I needed more to soak it all up. The true star of the meal, though, was the French toast. Thick and drenched in a maple syrup with a vanilla cream dollop. I highly recommend ordering it almost as a dessert and eating it right away. We waited a bit while finishing the savory dishes, so it wasn’t piping hot by the time we dug in, still delicious, but it definitely would’ve been even better warmer. Definitely a spot worth returning to 🍳
We had a really great experience here, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was great. The inside is decorated with lots of ships and nautical-themed items. The bar itself feels a bit like a ship with almost gantry-like washrooms. The burger was fantastic, among the very best I’ve had in NYC and while maybe not top 3, worth a mention to anyone who likes burgers. The cocktails were also great - while I don’t think they were the very highest in mixology, they were delicious and inventive. The orchard margarita was very interesting and tasted super unique.
I would give this a 4.5. The waitress was a sweetheart and the atmosphere was beautiful—I loved all the decor. We started with the deviled eggs, sunchokes, and squid salad, and the appetizers were amazing. For entrées, I ordered the cod and my husband had the pork shoulder. The pork shoulder was absolutely delectable with a delicious sauce; however, with only olives on the plate, there wasn’t anything to soak up and fully enjoy the sauce. A mashed potato or even a piece of toast would have really elevated the dish. The cod was cooked perfectly—flaky, light, and fresh—but the flavor was a bit subtle and could have benefited from a sauce or crust to add more depth and punch. Overall, a lovely experience with excellent service and thoughtfully prepared dishes.
This was such a treat! A $100 brunch for two isn’t usually in our budget, but this time it was absolutely worth it. The French toast was our favorite—so delicious! I highly recommend it!!! The thick-cut bacon and fries were also amazing. The croque monsieur wasn’t my personal favorite, but it seemed to be a crowd favorite since everyone around us was ordering it. The décor and boat-inspired theme were adorable, and the atmosphere was a perfect 10/10. Highly recommend!
Immaculate, and just so welcoming. We were supposed to celebrate my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary here, but my dad fell ill, so I just went with my mum—and they couldn’t have made us feel more at home, more looked after. And, naturally, the food was stunning. Thank you, thank you so much.
Fantastic food and service! Worth the hype. A harder reservation but not the hardest place I’ve been to, people cancel a lot. Definitely the best French toast I’ve ever had. Custardy, vanilla, crunchy and pillowy soft. Not too sweet. Shocked how good it was. Worth every dollar. The burger is really good and I cleared it. The caramelized onions were perfect and the burger was so juicy. The everything bagel with lox was sneakily great. Not a crazy amount of cream cheese, just right. Really good food despite looking like a boring menu. Cannot wait to go back for dinner. I do wish they had more non alcoholic options, I love a good mocktail menu. Try the phonograph cider, really good.
I would give 5 stars if the prices were a bit more modest, the flavors were a bit more interesting, or the portions were a bit larger. Overall, the food was good but I was expecting more than "good" given the hype. The bavette steak came out lukewarm and the entree portions were pretty small given the prices. But the service was friendly enough and the cocktails and vibe were good. I would try coming back again.
We visited Sailor recently and were overall very happy we came in. The mussel toast was absolutely incredible - though we wanted slightly more on the plate (bigger slice of bread pls). It was just so good and wanted enough for one more bite each. The pork shoulder fell apart cutting right thru it in the best way possible and the sauce was brilliant. The poached radishes were very unique, I’ve never had a dish quite like that before. The arctic char pâté was very good, but the bread crackers were a bit too hard and took away from the flavor. I wonder if a thick slice or two of sourdough would be better used here but hey, what do I know. For dessert, the ginger cake was great with the vanilla whipped cream. The fig + almond tart was a bit of miss for us. We showed up around 5:45pm as a walk in and was sat at the bar at 7pm, so expect a bit of a wait. No worries though, plenty of bars nearby to grab a drink and wait it out. It’s worth it. We want to come back to try the cod and chicken mains - the people next to us at the bar ordered and raved about them.
Had a great lunch meal at Sailor. The staff was really friendly and it’s a quintessential neighborhood spot. Had the spring omelette and some fries, both of which were excellent with a glass of the chenin blanc, although the omelette could have had a bit more depth to the taste. My fav though were the olives they brought out to snack on while you waited for your food. Nothing beats high quality olives as a snack.
I came for the Caesar salad which was pretty good but missing something. Crunchy croutons, anchovies and lots of parmesan cheese but I think the sauce was just not enough to call this the best I've had. The burger was a pleasant surprise with caramelized onions, gruyere and fries. The bun was soft and the burger was tender. Seemed overpriced but pretty good. Overall it was nice, but not worth a trip just for this place.
Upon arriving, you can't help but appreciate the interior design, warm and cosy setting and the lovely front of the house team. We arrived an hour early and due to a full house, we went for a stroll and enjoyed the seasonal Fort Green Brooklyn buzz. Another warm reception on our return, I ordered the most perfect gin martini and made some selections. A note for pescatarians, all of the fish entrees have either a meat stock or element that makes it highly restrictive. April Bloomfield has a reputation for her lack of flexibility in the kitchen so we were not surprised when our server politely said no. After briefly discussing with my brother who suggested we leave, I found a few items that worked and we gave it a go. Green Salad with Oregano Vinaigrette Burrata with Parsnip Purée + Mushrooms Seared Squid with Cilantro Butter + Chickpeas Stuffed Radicchio with Red Wine Sauce After we ordered, our server returned to the table. She had overheard our disappointment and spoke to the manager who made an exception to leave the lardo off the cod which we gratefully added to order. I am glad we stayed. One after the other, each dish was a 10/10. The Stuffed Radicchio was a solid 8/10 and we left full, appreciated and seen. Great meal!
We happened to walk by this little restaurant a few days ago and were instantly drawn in by its cozy and charming vibe. It really lives up to its name and theme. Luckily, I managed to snag a reservation shortly after, and it’s clear this place is popular. There was already a line forming for walk-ins when we arrived. We ordered the burger, Caesar salad, and French toast. To be honest, I’m usually not a big fan of French toast, but this one completely won me over. It looked like a giant foie gras. The inside was incredibly soft and it paired beautifully with the vanilla cream. The presentation was also stunning and honestly made me even hungrier. Overall, I really enjoyed the food. The only downside was that our waitress didn’t seem very cheerful. Maybe she was just having a rough day, which I totally understand. That said, the food more than made up for it. I’d definitely come back!
Sailor delivers cozy charm with serious cooking. The roast chicken is juicy with crisp skin, the bass is delicate and buttery, and the profiteroles are a playful and perfect finish. The space feels warm and romantic, like a secret worth keeping. I did feel like it was a bit overpriced for what it is but all in all it was an enjoyable meal
Sailor is a gem of a restaurant — warm, welcoming, and delicious. The menu is well-executed, and everything we ordered was really tasty. The standouts for me were the bass and the Swiss chard. There was a pork special which was very flavorful and, tender. I also had an excellent martini. The meal was deeply satisfying, atmosphere felt effortlessly cozy yet elevated, and would highly recommend
My second time here. First time I walked in and sat at the bar with a friend. Great bartender/server who was very friendly. We had the half chicken, raw hamachi, and some veggie dish (cant remember exactly). But all delicious. Decided to bring my husband in this time. Squid dish was good but a bit too acidic. The cod was just okay and the bass with mushrooms was excellent. We asked for fries but they were very salty - especially for the Belgian! The skin contact wine smelled like roses and went perfectly with the squid. Desserts didn’t look that interesting so we skipped it but last time we had the profiteroles. Staff was a bit serious this time. I guess that’s true of so many restaurants in our hood of FG these days. (We’ve been in the neighborhood for over 20 years.) Expensive and very serious! Our bill for one starter, one side, two main dishes, 2.5 glasses of wine (yes, you can get a half glass) was $146.45 including tax.
overhyped! a pretty non-descript brunch experience. we got the roast beef tartine, shakshuka, burger and french toast. the roast beef tartine came with a horseradish creme fraiche that barely had a suggestion of horseradish, no punchiness at all. the shakshuka was truly nothing special, one note, no pizzazz/spice. the burger and fries were very good but I wouldn't go back just for that. French toast was pretty soft/soggy, after receiving borderline burnt bread with all other items frankly we expected a bit extra crispiness! so-so experience, menu doesn't seem to have an identity.
Came here for brunch the bar was available so we took it . THE FOOD TOOK forever to come the burger definitely needed more salt and cheese the French toast was good but over all this place is insanely over priced for what it is the burger is a 16-18 dollar burger the French toast 13 dollars max it’s one slice a glass of oj 7$ I go to many fine dining establishments with better pricing this is far from fine dining it’s solid not amazing
As usual, we New Yorkers are misled by “lists” declaring a few trendy places to be the best of the best. The food was so uninspired and basic, not to mention oversalted. I’m disappointed but mostly feel duped after the experience. Certainly not worth a 3 hour wait or obsessing over Resy for tables 14 days in advance. Save your money and find a local restaurant without the fake clout/hype to enjoy.
Finally snagged a reservation, and to be honestly unsure why everyone is clamoring to eat here. It’s decent food and great service but nothing seemed to blow us away aside from the people. Service was outstanding, I’ll give them that - the team here seems pleasant enough (for NYC) and pretty attentive. Tried the half roasted chicken with yogurt + jalapeño + cilantro - it was tasty and a great portion, but worth $40? Not quite. The entree that stood out the most was the Bass with Swiss Chard and Lentils + horseradish cream. I’d come back for that dish and maybe some of the overpriced deviled eggs but can’t see being drawn to come back anytime soon. The cod with braised market beans was forgettable (sorry!)
Honestly kind of mid. Cool bar area that looks like a boat (re: Sailor), friendly enough service though nothing outstanding, and good but not mind blowing food. The french toast is DIVINE, but everything else we had (croque monsieur, burger, cocktail, wine) was fine. Ambiance kind of felt like meh. Clean and elegant sure, but cramped and a little cold in energy. Service was fine - a little uptight and not super warm. All in all, it was ok, but I wouldn't make a special trek out for here. With that said, it was packed and super hard to get a reservation.
Disappointing Experience at Sailor Restaurant I recently dined at the Sailor Restaurant and was disappointed with the service and food quality. The Caesar salad was overly salty, the smoked arctic char pate portion was minuscule, and the COD dish contained cilantro which wasn't mentioned on the menu, despite my severe allergy. When seeking a recommendation, the waiter was unhelpful and simply said everything was good. I left the restaurant hungry and unsatisfied, although the wine was enjoyable. Improvement in service and menu transparency is needed.
Delicious food but disappointing service. Table was near kitchen and could hear every order shouted to kitchen staff which disrupted our conversation. Ordered dishes did not arrive at the same time and had to wait for everyone to receive their order. Then we were asked to vacate our table due to another party waiting . Would have been ok if they handled every table the same way but we seemed to be the only ones asked to accommodate. Disappointing for a restaurant of this stature.
Second time at Sailor. First was great, a year ago, so we came back for more. This time we really wanted the burger and the french toast. When we finally got a reservation we chose to go at 13:45 even though the restaurant closes at 2pm. We did it anyways because there was a note of Resy saying that even getting there at 2pm you would have the very same experience and all the meals they offer. This was not the case. The normal Sailor burger was sold out, they only had a smaller version (maybe resizing to be able to serve more?) and no more french toast. I also ordered a freshly squeezed orange juice and got a store bought juice with no warning. We let the waiter know our frustration and she was really considerate. They did not charge us for our drinks. Recommendation: don’t promise something you can’t deliver. We would have made the reservation for an earlier time if it wasn’t for that promising note at the time of reservation… and the juice, man, just let me know and I could have chosen something else.
Ambience is lovely. Beautiful bar and dining room. The dishes were hit or miss. While nothing was bad, I couldn’t say it was worth the price. The cod left me hungry. My partner ordered the chicken which was better, but at the end of the day, it’s still just chicken.
Really average food for the price. A few standout dishes like the pork and artichoke salad. However everything else was really average and nothing special. Such a shame because the service and atmosphere were amazing! We visited as we had been gifted a voucher by friends so still had a lovely time but would have been very disappointed had we paid on our own.
I’ve lived in Fort Greene for eight years and have become a big fan of many of the neighborhood’s restaurants, so I was genuinely excited when Sailor opened as it offered an elevated experience. The ambience is warm and welcoming, and while the service had a few slightly awkward moments, it was generally good. Unfortunately, the food didn’t quite meet the expectations, especially with the elevated price point compared to neighboring restaurants. The deviled eggs, for example, were something I could easily replicate at home—I was hoping for a more unique or elevated take. The crudo was excellent, and the halibut was delicious as well, but the pork dish was simply a large cut of pork without much finesse or balance. Dessert ended the meal on a disappointing note. The caramel hardened on the ice cream, making it difficult to eat and overwhelmingly sugary. Again, missing the mark for a restaurant of this caliber. All in all, despite the cozy atmosphere and a few solid dishes, the overall experience fell short for me, and I don’t see myself returning at this price.
Cute spot in ft greene. Very popular but justified. Food was more elegant and sophisticated than you might expect. Had fish that was cooked perfectly which sounds standard but really more rare than you’d think. Waiter was excellent like fine dining level service even tho we were literally eating on the sidewalk. Vibe was like park slope but more bougey. Not a destination spot but if you happen to be in the area then worth a visit. Also anywhere that serves martinis with a sidecar is good in my eyes! Verdict: would return if in the area.
Sailor started out feeling like this perfect little neighborhood gem: cozy, simple, great energy, and those early dishes felt like a steal for the quality. Then the hype hit, and suddenly it’s $11 for 4 slices of bread.
I went in with high expectations given how hard it is to get a reservation and the overall positive reviews. Unfortunately, I left quite disappointed. Aside from the space being warm and cozy, the experience felt overrated and overpriced, clearly targeted at wealthy diners who may not have much exposure to true culinary craftsmanship. For example, we ordered the Deviled Eggs with Pickle and Dill ($9) and received just one egg, cut in half, with a slight twist; nothing memorable. The highlight of the meal was the halibut, which was fresh and well-cooked. However, the Pork Loin with Mustard Sauce ($37) was simply a very large piece of meat with a sauce and some parsley on the side. I had to ask whether a side was included (it wasn’t) and the suggested fries were an additional $12. Dessert was another letdown: profiteroles, a classic of French cuisine that doesn’t need reinventing, were served with caramel instead of chocolate. Since caramel hardens on cold ice cream, it turned the dessert into a chewy, overly sweet candy rather than the hot–cold contrast that makes profiteroles great. After a couple of drinks each, the dinner came to roughly $100 per person. Overall, a major disappointment with nothing memorable.
My husband called to discuss the best way to bring our 3-month-old baby, suggesting he could wear him (which takes up no space in a restaurant and we have done many times before), or use a bassinet/pram (also which many restaurants in the city happily accommodate). He was told even having a baby in a carrier would inconvenience the restaurant to the point that they told him to cancel the reservation, and this the day before NYE for a NYE reservation. Extremely not child-friendly. Yuck.
