Was looking for a spot to eat in Williamsburg and ended up at Nan Xiang Express, which turned out to be exactly what we needed. It’s a faster, more casual spin on the original Nan Xiang, so you still get those familiar flavors without the long wait or full sit-down experience. If you’ve been to the original, you can definitely feel the connection here same roots, just more streamlined. The space is small and cozy with a relaxed neighborhood feel. Service is quick, and the whole setup is very efficient. It’s self-service, so you grab your own water and clear your table when you’re done, which keeps things moving and fits the express concept well. We ordered a mix of dishes and everything came out fast and tasted really good. The crab meat and pork soup dumplings were flavorful and comforting, with a savory broth made from collagen-rich pork stock that melts into soup when steamed. The filling had ground pork, crab meat, and ginger, giving it a nice balance of richness and subtle sweetness without feeling greasy. The spicy beef soup dumplings had a deeper, bolder flavor. The beef filling was well seasoned, with garlic, soy sauce, and chili adding warmth rather than overwhelming heat. Still juicy, still comforting, just with a little extra kick. The chicken fried rice was simple and satisfying. Made with fluffy rice, egg, chicken, and light seasoning, it was clean, comforting, and exactly what you want alongside richer dishes. We also tried the pork and sticky rice siumai, which felt heartier than typical shumai. The sticky rice added a chewy texture, and the pork filling was savory and filling without being heavy. For drinks, the hot soy milk was smooth and lightly sweet, very classic and comforting with the meal. The grape and lime tea was refreshing and bright, with a slight tang that helped cut through the richness of the dumplings. Overall they deliver good food, fast service, and a cozy, casual experience. Simple, comforting, and efficient a solid spot when you want good dumplings without the wait.
A pretty good soup dumpling with pretty thick skin and mild seasoning. I got the beef one and its not that spicy! Which is nice and you can always add more spice using their chili oils. They offer free infused water too. The sitting available are plenty.
The beef noodle soup was really delicious — the beef was generous and came in big, tender chunks, which I loved. The broth was rich and comforting. The only small downside was that the noodles were a bit too soft, as if they were cooked a little too long. The staff at the front desk were very friendly and welcoming, always smiling, which made the experience even better. I would definitely come back again.
The restaurant's ambiance and decor are truly inviting, providing a pleasant setting for a meal. Every dish presented was prepared with great care, showcasing fresh ingredients and delightful flavors. The presentation of each plate was artistic and added to the overall dining experience. The automated vendor option provided a convenient and efficient way to order. Overall, the restaurant offered a well-rounded and enjoyable experience.
Got the pork soup dumplings, cabbage shrimp pork dumplings, rice cake, and beef stir fry noodles. The cabbage shrimp pork dumplings were unexpected a favorite over the soup dumplings. The noodles were a bit salty but hit the spot. I enjoyed the soy milk which is hard to find!
Nan Xiang Express: Dumplings That Deliver Nan Xiang Express is a fantastic stop for anyone craving authentic and delicious Shanghainese cuisine, but their dumplings are the true star of the show. Specifically, their famous soup dumplings (xiao long bao) are a must-try. The delicate, thin wrappers manage to perfectly encase a savory filling and a burst of flavorful, piping-hot broth—a truly satisfying bite. Beyond the signature soup dumplings, their other varieties like the pan-fried pork dumplings are equally excellent, offering a crispy bottom and a tender, juicy filling. The quality, freshness, and authentic taste make Nan Xiang Express a top-tier choice for dumpling lovers. While the "Express" format means it’s fast and convenient, the rich flavors certainly don't feel rushed. It's a taste experience that will absolutely have you planning your next order.
I did not expect the wonton to be that delicious. The soup dumplings too, OMG i’m so impressed. Such a great restaurant, everything tasted so good. I’m traveling new york but I would come back just for these dumplings.
This is a great dumpling shop with about 6 4-top tables and a small but very nice back outdoor area with some seating. You can order directly from staff or via a touch kiosk. We got most of their menu when we went. The hot and sour soup is good on the sour side with a nice amount of acid but could be a bit more spicy and have more mushrooms in it. The hot sauce on the table is Szechuan pepper based and has a fair amount of mala so be warned. The scallion pancake was pretty good and comes with hoisin sauce to dip it in, came out super hot and crispy but could have used a few more scallions to better hit on the onion flavor. Finally the soup dumplings: we tried every type and all were amazing, they come out steaming and hit but not so hit you can not actually eat them right away, great flavor on the pork, beef and pork+crab. Overall this was an amazing little spot for lunch
Beautiful braised beef noodle soup and drinks!!! Super tasty dish and it's always my favourite Chinese dish for a hearty meal ♥️ Thank you so much ~ friendly service and easy to find on Google Maps. 🙂
These dumplings are absolutely fantastic, especially the spicy dumplings served with peanut sauce! Each bite is bursting with flavor, and the spicy kick perfectly complements the savory filling. The prices are reasonable too, making it an excellent spot to enjoy delicious, high-quality dumplings without breaking the bank. If you're looking for a satisfying and flavorful dumpling experience, this is definitely the place to go!
Classic 小笼包 (soup dumplings) with authentic dipping chilli oil condiments! Such a comforting meal so far away from home.
So glad they opened a location in Williamsburg. Food is delicious and reasonably priced. The shrimp wontons in spicy peanut sauce are one of my favorite dishes to get anywhere and I crave it. The soup dumplings are just OK, I think something is lost when they aren’t made on site but if you need to scratch that itch it will do the trick otherwise go somewhere in Chinatown. They are open until 2am and there’s no waiters just order at the counter. It’s right off Bedford ave and Grand st. So good! Get it!
Saw this while walking around and it was soooo delicious. Easy to order and quick to get. The crab + pork soup dumplings were so good. 10/10!
Had a great experience at Nan Xiang Express in Williamsburg! We ordered the chicken stir-fry and scallion pancakes, and both were fantastic. The chicken stir-fry was flavorful, with tender chicken and perfectly cooked vegetables, all coated in a delicious sauce. The scallion pancakes were crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and had just the right amount of oniony flavor. The service was quick, and the staff was friendly. Definitely a great spot for a casual and satisfying meal—will be coming back to try more!
Amazing dumplings and siu mai! Cant go wrong. Great and quick service!
New to NYC. Here for a work contract so I’m trying food in the area. This place was delicious! All of the food was excellent and the staff were so efficient and kind. I’ll be coming back here again so I can try everything on the menu. Thank you!
Dry aged New York Strip cooked to absolute medium rare perfection! Japanese stouts amazing! Servic impeccable!! Couldn’t get into Peter Lugers wound up here! So happy I did!! Top 3 steaks in my life!
I cannot think about the food without getting slightly lightheaded from the pure pleasure it gave me. This is a masterclass on how good ingredients prepared exceptionally well can bring pure joy. Flawless! The only fault I could find was that the restrooms could use a thorough clean the ligh switch was dusty and looked grimy but the food made up for everything. They can take all my money going forward.
My recent visit to Salt + Charcoal was absolutely incredible for my birthday experience, from the moment we walked in, the ambiance was perfect cozy, intimate, and ideal for a special occasion. The food, a unique fusion of a Japanese steakhouse and grill, was sensational. We started with the tuna tartare which was incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared by our waiter. The diced avocado and wasabi provided the perfect amount of creaminess and kick, and rolling it ourselves in the crispy nori sheets added a fun, interactive touch to the Japanese style preparation. The oysters were an absolute amazing. They arrived sizzling, bathed in a rich, flavorful soy butter garlic sauce with a pop of fresh cilantro and lime zest. The balance of the smoky grill and the savory butter was perfect, and the texture was plump and crunchy. For the star of the show was the NY strip steak. The New York Strip, cooked medium-rare, and it was perfect. The unique charcoal grilling method gave it an incredible, smoky char on the outside, while the inside remained juicy, tender, and robustly flavored with a satisfying bite. Beyond the exquisite cuisine, what truly made the night memorable was the outstanding service. My waiter, Patrick was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly throughout the entire meal even when it came down to making the payment hint hint Whitney Houston debit card 🙂. Patrick explained each dish with enthusiasm, offered brilliant recommendations, and ensured our glasses were never empty, timing each course perfectly so our never felt rushed. Salt + Charcoal offers a truly refined yet welcoming experience. It's on the pricier side, but for the quality of food and the impeccable service, it's well worth the splurge for a memorable evening. I can't recommend it enough and will definitely be back!
This place is a gem! Sit at the bar, enjoy the sake, and try something new and exciting! Maru, the bartender, made our evening! He gave a very knowledgeable tour through the sake flight - but the wine and cocktail list won’t disappoint either. We started with the “small plate for sake” appetizer, and enjoyed the wagyu sushi, the yuzu wedge salad, and chose the dry-aged ribeye and new york strip.
We had a most enjoyable Sunday brunch here and loved every moment of it. The 36-oz Porterhouse steak was outstanding in flavor and more than enough for our party of four. The salads are a lovely appetizer option and can easily be shared. The spicy tuna avocado wedge salad was absolutely delicious. The staff is super friendly and can answer any question one might have about the choices of meat. There are also many vegetarian dishes which I am planning to taste on my next visit. What a wonderful restaurant to have in the heart of Williamsburg, offering an authentic Japanese cuisine. I’m so glad I discovered this establishment and will return many times. Thank you for the wonderful food!
With every bite I took, I couldn’t stop saying how happy I was. The cocktails were great. The ribeye and duck were super flavorful. The baked onion tasted good, but I probably wouldn’t order it again. However, everything overall was fantastic and we will definitely be coming back. Can’t wait to try the other items on the menu!
This place answered the call when we were looking for sunday night late dinner. I was in the mood for sushi while my husband wanted steak. How appropriate that this place marries those two dishes. When we arrived, we were seated in the back. Dimly lit quaint decor. Having the whole place to ourselves added to the romantic vibes. Service was wonderful. We based all our food choices based on our water's recommendations. I ordered the Azabu whiskey sour. Love a good egg white cocktail. It was perfect not too sweet with yuzu sake, lime and japanese whiskey. The Branzino sushi arrived with 4 juicy pieces. Then we feasted on the shrimp crunch and salmon roll. My partner enjoyed the New York strip steak with cheese fries and grilled broccoli. Everything was wonderful but standouts were the shrimp and the broccoli for me.
This review is long overdue ☺️🙈! Amazing restaurant with above par service. Went as a graduation dinner for my son. My son loves Asian cuisine and is an avid meat eater so this was a perfect combo choice for us. Due to NYC traffic, we were going to be a little late for our reservation. Called to update and they were able to push us back 30-minutes. As a family, we had fun celebrating this milestone and it seemed like we have the restaurant to ourselves. Most of the other customers were seated outside. Food was fantastic, savory and hit all the spots to make us return and recommend to friends & family. Our server, was very attentive, fast and provided insight on things we should and did try. Was a great day in all and would recommend it to everyone.
I've come here to share special moments with my loved ones. If you are a steak connoisseur and have not been here yet, you need to make a trip here. This is by far the best Wagyu Steak I've ever had. The price is well with the experience. I don't think there is anything on this menu that is bad. The cocktails are also great.
I stopped by this place for a quick solo dinner. It’s a well-known Chinese eatery famous for its soup dumplings, with multiple locations around New York City. I’ve been to their original spot in Flushing before, and this one in Williamsburg feels like a smaller satellite version — cozy but not ideal for large groups. Since it’s mostly self-service, you order from a screen inside, take a seat, and they bring your food to the table. I ordered a bowl of pork and shrimp wonton soup and their signature pork and leek soup dumplings (the green ones). I’ve had these dumplings at their Flushing location before, and they’ve always been excellent — flavorful, juicy, and perfectly steamed. At this location, though, they were still good but not quite as impressive as the original. The wonton soup was decent, but nothing special. The standout here is definitely their in-house chili oil — super spicy, aromatic, and full of flavor. If you visit, don’t skip it. Overall, a solid stop for dumpling lovers, though the Flushing branch still reigns supreme.
Food is amazing! The cucumber salad is to die for. So fresh and flavorful! Would come back just for the cucumbers. The soup dumplings are pretty good too, each bite exploding with hot pork soup. It’s a self service place and food comes out quickly. It’s a small cozy restaurant, limited seating.
Signature soup dumplings were great! Not a fan of the beef ones, has a weird taste and didn’t seem fresh. I’d come back for the other ones though 😊 Guy at the register can be more friendly and communicate more kindly.
Had an amazing dinner here! The steak was absolutely delicious, and the service was great. The only downside was how hot it was inside. The air conditioning seemed to be off, and my guests and I were really uncomfortable because of it Hopefully that gets sorted soon, because otherwise everything was excellent We’ll definitely be back once the A/C is fixed. LOL!
Absolutely loved this spot! The porterhouse steak was incredible, perfectly cooked and packed with flavor. The tuna tartare with nori sheets was a fresh, delicious starter, and everything we ordered hit the mark. Cozy atmosphere, great vibe, and I’m already looking forward to coming back for another steak night. Highly recommend!
Food was served on a water damaged tray. Hate leaving negative reviews but this tray should not have been given to a customer. I thought the dumplings were average but was grossed by the tray and would not come back or recommend.
We went this weekend with friends. The appetizers were great and the rolls were solid. The porterhouse, though — at about $70 per person — was surprisingly plain. Not bad, just missing the flavor you’d expect at that price. Grilled veggies were $28 for a few small pieces of pepper, corn, and yuca. Hard to justify that one. They also add a 3% credit-card fee, which feels out of place in a spot positioned as high-end. Nice interior, good service, chairs could be comfier. Overall we had a good time, but the value just didn’t match the bill.
Service is very slow. Ordered a second martini when the food arrived, and 20-25 mins later, still did not receive it. Waitress gave an excuse that downstairs is a large party, but frankly for a table of two spending over $400 on a tab, I’d expect a single drink to get out to me in under twenty minutes. This was not a great way to end the night, and the waitress continuously was hard to get a hold of as she’s seemingly manning far too many tables. Nothing done to make it right, other than an excuse and apology. On top of this: 1. Unexplainable credit card fee. Seriously? 2. Extremely loud environment, can’t hear the server and she can’t hear me. Will not return. One & done.
Didn't meet expectations. Porterhouse was decent but overall didn't hit the spot. Wagyu tasted like a regular medium-rare filet steak and not good portions for the price they charged (4 measly slices). Service was slow with only 1 server in a full restaurant. Appetizers were two pieces and server offered to do three but did not quote extra costs to do so. On top of the high costs, they stick a credit card fee on top of the bill that other steakhouses in the city don't do. Would not return.
