Sandwiches have not changed in size, flavor or filling.
Love this great sandwich spot. They have a super wide variety of different sandwiches. I kind of default to the Johnny roast beef every time because it is delicious! I encourage people to stop by this great little gem in Brooklyn.
John's Deli never disappoints. Their food is always so fresh whatever time of day you go. I also use them often for catering and even with a last minute order they will accommodate me every time. Their service, food and authentic Brooklyn deli vibe is second to none. Best food in town!!
Stellar food, stellar service! Owner was so friendly!! Food was delicious!! Of course we had to get the Johnny roast beef, make sure you get extra gravy! And it was Monday night and the owner said the Monday special, Keyser soze on a pretzel roll was great and it absolutely was!!! We also got fried ravioli, fire, and potato croquettes! Everything was amazing, service was friendly, and because it was a Monday night, There was no wait! Couldn’t have asked for a better experience or better food!
I needed to put together a lunch for a group of realtors. I was speaking to and Johns came to the rescue. They had a great advice and absolute best pricing. The food was unbelievable and everyone was so happy with it. I can’t wait to order from them again these guys are truly incredible. I would highly recommend! Thank you guys again for blessing us.
Very high quality food and service at extremely reasonable prices. There's really no flaw in this place. Been a customer for many years. Never had anything other than a perfect experience
I’ve been coming to The Original John’s Deli for years, and their food is always out of this world. The service is top-notch too! I recently purchased their half tray of rice pudding for the holidays, and it was a huge hit with the family. I think they now want a tray for every occasion! 5 stars for The Original John’s Deli!
Absolutely delicious sandwiches and superb service. The pulled pork in the Dexter Morgan was so tasty, and the Johnny Drama with both the broccoli rabe and spinach hit the spot perfectly, Fresh, quality ingredients in every bite. Cannot recommend highly enough!
I drove from New Jersey to try the Johnny Roastbeef Sandwich and it was the best I ever had in my life. The fresh mozzarella and the perfectly toasted bread and the “Black Gold” that’s what I am naming the sauce on the side. It was absolute perfection. I sat next to someone that has been going there since he was 10 and he never misses a Saturday, that’s the type of deli this place is, a real “neighborhood spot”. The staff was amazing, the atmosphere took me back to an old movie and the food will bring me and my family back for a lifetime. I will bring friends there, and I will bring John’s Deli to my friends-That’s how you know the food is BANGING!!!
This place has the best sandwiches the chicken cutlet and eggplant parmesan sandwich were so good its worth the trip and if you go to the beach buy the sandwich as a lunch
The food was delicious! I got a Johnny's roastbeef sandwich and it was the best. I’m from Philly and I love sandwiches , we were in the neighborhood so of course I had to try. In Philly, this is equivalent to Hershel’s Deli but they have a variety of selections. I ordered fries which I thought was pricey at $8, but to my surprise they were fresh cut fries which made it completely worth it. I’m a sucker for fresh cut fries. Overall experience was great. I can’t wait to come back so I can try another Hero.
I ordered the Adrian Balboa (fried eggplant parm wrap) Best wrap/sandwich I’ve had in a very long time. Eggplant was cooked perfectly, sauce had great flavor. Perfect size and absolutely delicious! Can’t wait to try other items!
I used John's Deli for catering. It was a pleasure to work with Ari. He helped me out figuring out how much food I needed. Everyone loved the food and complimented how good it was. I would definitely recommend and will be ordering from them again.
We order from Original John’s all the time, but finally got a chance to make a catering order— service and food were both wonderful. The best sandwich in Brooklyn!! Edit: I need to say this— I used Original John’s for the catering after my father’s funeral. More people came up to me to ask where the sandwiches were from than to give their condolences. I… think that says it all.
Ok so John's has to be one of the best sandwich joints I've been too. Both when I was a carnivore and now a vegetarian. Everything is always fresh. Not just tastes fresh, but legit has to be fresh. I got the eggplant and mozz. With the tomato salad today and it tasted like they just baked the bread for my sandwich. I love this place. Sucks I live on the other side of the city from here, but I'll always come here as a treat when I'm at my safety classes.
Amazing food, homely staff, great crowd having the OG NYC Italian American accent Definitely worth the trip deep into Brooklyn
Great roastbeef sandwhich with gravy. This placed was on my list and I was in the area so I had to give it a try. Good size sandwhich overall. The meat, cheese, and onions were all very fresh. I was surprised with the taste of the gravy. It was very savory but for some reason I was expecting a balsamic taste because of the color, there was not. The place it self is small but they do have tables. For sure worth a stop in if you're near there.
This deli absolutely needs to be added to the historical landmark preservation list it's a true neighborhood institution. Every kid worth their salt has to have tasted the heroes and rolls coming out of this place if they’re going to claim they're from Bensonhurst or Gravesend. Italian, Black, Hispanic, Asian doesn’t matter every kid growing up around here has had their first bite from this deli. If you’re talking bacon, egg, and cheese, your first one should definitely be from here. The prices? Fair and affordable enough that your wallet won’t file a restraining order the way the $20 is the new $1. If you don’t know now, you know!
This place is a spot! Tons of sandwiches with other items. My wife got a breakfast sandwich, Jesse Katsopolis (at 11:30 AM) and I got the Glengarry (Tuesday special) and some pasta fagioli. The soup was great and I’d definitely try the others based on it. I’d also like to try some of the breakfast sandwiches as they seemed pretty legit. Looking forward to coming back here again soon and getting Johnny Roastbeef.
Unbelievable! Best blackout cake ever! My favorite used to be Mia’s blackout&chocolate fudge cake but ladybird is definitely the best by far!
I literally wanted to try the whole menu once I took a bite of that crispy chicken cutlet hero! The taste just keeps your taste buds going! And let me not forget the delicious fried ravioli bites filled with ricotta cheese and a hot side of marinara sauce! John’s Deli is the reality of 10/10 Italian sandwiches! Can’t wait to go back and bring my jersey friends and family along!!!!! 😍😍😁😁
You're not going to get a better sandwhich in the gravesend/bensonhurst area. They have a sandwhich for everyone from buffalo shrimp, roast beef, pastrami, turkey whatever you want they have it. My personal favorite is the ari gold on pretzel bread, and I also really like their hot Turkey and roast beef sandwiches because the gravy is awesome. The portions are old school where a roll will really fill you and a hero has yet to fill even the most bottomless of stomachs. Dont let the prices spook you, they are exactly where the should be for the quality. I think the subway next door was crazy for opening up next to them, and I think they only manage to stay open because of people not knowing the hidden gem next door (Johns Deli is competitive price wise).
I left a good review the first time I came here. I ate twice again. Today, I had an omelette. I'm sorry, the lady at the front isn't aware of the ingredients. The chefs didn't provide the plate with bread and home fries as mentioned on the menu. It's a little nuance for no reason.
This is just an unbelievable establishment where the staff is so friendly and the signature sandwiches are off the chain. Anytime that you're in New York City or even in Brooklyn or even in New York state, you have to take the pilgrimage trip to John's deli. You can pick from like 150 sandwiches morning, noon and night and you will find something to tickle your taste buds and if you don't then I'm sorry you probably don't even have a soul. So don't make up any excuses. Take the oh hell. I don't remember the train number to 25th Street, get off the platform, walk a couple of blocks south and you'll see a Petco store in John's deli's right next door. Folks it's that easy. It really is get on a train. Go down there. Walk a little bit. Get a sammich. Sit down inside and enjoy your sandwich Reflect as you chew your sandwich that this was one of the best decisions that you've ever made.
We ordered catering from John’s Deli for my son’s birthday, and everything so delicious. My guests are still raving about how yummy the food was. I will definitely be ordering from them again in the future.
I’ve been coming to John’s Deli since before high school, and it’s always been a go-to spot for me and my team. I usually spend $60–$70+ on orders, and the food always hits the spot. The staff works hard and the drivers are quick — I’ve been a loyal customer for years and appreciate having a place like this around.
The best hands down in town. Sandwiches are amazing and fresh to order. Delivery was quick and easy. Affordable and in a great neighborhood. 25th Ave on the D train and 86st on the N. B1, B3, B4. Parking is metered and free parking around the block, or just park in Petco and pick up your order. Highly recommended.
We catered from John’s deli to our nursing home with many large trays and a variety of different food, many compliments were given to administration regarding their food. From the delivery being punctual, customer service, and food was definitely enjoyable. We will definitely cater from then again!
Ordered 3 different sandwiches- catering size - 3 foot roast beef (their signature sandwich) with gravy and onions, provided separately - 2 foot Eric Murphy - chicken cutlet with mozzarella and roasted red peppers with olive oil and balsamic on the side - 2 foot Wolf of Wall St - eggplant and broccoli rabe The sandwiches were a big hit at my daughter’s 40th birthday party. Ari took care of us when ordering and his staff were on top it when we picked the order up. I will recommend John’s Deli for parties or just when you want a great sandwich!!
“John’s Original Deli on Stilwell Ave is an absolute gem! I recently had the pleasure of trying their Johnny Roast Beef and Jessie Pinkman sandwiches, and they completely exceeded my expectations. The Johnny Roast Beef was succulent and perfectly seasoned, while the Jessie Pinkman with its tantalizing combination of chicken cutlet, bacon, and Russian dressing was an explosion of flavors in every bite. The freshness of the ingredients and the attention to detail truly sets this deli apart. The staff were friendly and attentive, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend John’s Original Deli to anyone looking for top-notch sandwiches in the area. A definite five-star establishment!”
I was craving some pastrami and I was nearby. This is the Ari Gold, it has pastrami, melted Swiss cheese and brown mustard. The bread was crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. This is my second time here but definitely coming back every time I have the chance. I got there around 430pm on a Thursday and it was empty but when I left there was a line formed. They make the sandwiches on the fly so it takes some 10-15 minutes per order, depending on how big of a party you’re with.
The Johnny roast beef is insanely good. Shocked anyone could give it less than 5 stars if they tried it. It’s like a French dip au jus meets a cheese steak and it’s perfect. Less pretentious and juicier than the au jus with a thicker sauce and a little less cheesey than a cheesesteak, but with far superior onions. To anyone who didn’t get this sandwich and gave less than 5 stars, go back, try it, fix your rating.
Stopped in here when a friend recommended it. They have a huge menu with lots of delicious options. Wish I could have tried everything. I got the Tony Montana and the ham and cheese rice ball. The sandwich was delicious and it was huge. I got the 9 inch hero and it was huge. I can only imagine what the 16 inch hero was. Definitely worth the price and delicious flavor. I do wish they did put less gravy on the hero overall, because it can be messy but I enjoyed it none the less. Also the rice ball was awesome and one of the best I have had
This place is great. I’ve gotten plenty of roast beef & mozzarella sandwiches and they’ve never disappointed. Their gravy is like motor oil, it’s absolutely incredible. I went yesterday and changed it up for the first time, got a chicken parm hero & a chicken cutlet, lettuce, tomato, mayo, American cheese… 0 disappointment. They toast the bread to absolute perfection and their quality of ingredients is great. This truly is the best sandwich spot in Brooklyn if you ask me.
Gravy. Is. To. Die. For. Roast beef sandwich... Mozzarella Carrozza... Lester Diamond sandwich... I can't with this place! It's amazing. I just moved back to Brooklyn last year and hadn't had John's Deli in over 20 years so coming back was a dream for my senses. They are NOT stingy with meat here. The gravy is so decadent I order an extra on the side to use on my dinners. I'm not going to lie to you people .. I've also finished it off like it was soup a few times.
I actually found this place while I was looking for a new apartment and I saw the big mural saying "Hero King" and something about being the best heroes in Brooklyn so I defiantly said to myself, "let's see if that's true." I'm from a very Italian part of Connecticut and we know what's actually good and for the most part I've been continually let down by NYC's 'Italian' food, so I was ready for a challenge. All I have to say is wow, they really are the Hero King because it was AMAZING. I always go for the Duchess of Bay Ridge and it's always amazing, as is everything else on their menu (they have a pretty solid Penne alla Vodka, too, which is no small feat). Their tomatoes always taste perfect even if they're out of season, I have no idea how they do it. Needless to say if you're reading this because you're unsure of where to go or where to try from, John's Deli is the place. It's better than the 'gold standard/old school' places you'll read about on every Brooklyn food list on the internet, it's the real deal.
Okay all I have to say is roast beef with extra mozzarella and extra gravy. The eggplant Parmesan is good too but the roast beef for mozzarella is to die for even though ownership change the years ago it used to be owned by Italians now I believe it's a Greek family that owns it but the food is still the same service is good. They still have the same recipe for the roast beef and the gravy sauce... If you like roast beef you have to try this place.
I had heard about this spot from social media. To play it safe, I went before lunch around 11:30am. Luckily, I was able to order quickly. I ordered a chicken parm hero with a bottle of Pepsi. The sandwich tasted awesome. This place surely lives up to the hype.
The best of the best! Our class had the absolute best Friendsgiving lunch. Can't wait to plan the next holiday party with the ORIGINAL John's Deli! Thank you for providing such delicious food for us.
Worked with Ari in setting up catering for our daughter’s bday. The food and service were top notch! We had people coming up and asking us where we got the food from. This is our second year in a row working with John’s deli and we will definitely continue. Thank you!
Took an awesome tour of Brooklyn and Johns was one of the spots on our list. Thank god that even after 4 other stops we still made it here. Got the roast beef sandwich with onions and fresh mozzarella since we're taking it to go got the gravy in the side. What a ridiculous sandwich great ingredients put together in a perfect way. That gravy though........magical. I used a lot on the sandwich but want to put it on everything else I eat it's beyond incredible. Ari is a super friendly dude as well unbelievably welcoming and made sure we were good the whole time. Supporting great food and great people at the same time is always great. If you're in Brooklyn put it on the short list. Excited to try more of the stuff on the menu.
This is some good food. The roast beef is tender, and the gravy is not too salty, but still has flavor. Make sure you get a medium cup of gravy because the small cup is like a shot glass sized cup. Great spot to try once in awhile. It’ll really fill up your belly. I suggest the 9” heroes to really hit the spot.
Great sandwhich spot. They offer so many different options all named after a movie character which I liked. It has seating inside and outside which is a big plus. It also has some parking right next to it. I had the roast beef with mozzarella on the 9 inch sub and it was very filling. Very flavorful sandwhich with a good amount of gravy. You can request more but I didn't feel like I needed it. Good amount of beef and you can request as many caramelized onions as you want. I could have used a little more mozzarella but it was still a great sandwhich. I will be returning to try other sandwhiches. Service was quick and friendly.
You can't go wrong with anything you order here! Update Food: 5 | Service: 5 | Atmosphere: 5 Seating type: they offer indoor and outdoor seating but seating is limited. Vegetarian options: they offer a diverse menu with plenty of vegetarian options Dietary restrictions: they staff is very accommodating and will gladly make any changes needed Parking space: there is no designated parking for this restaurant but there is plenty of parking IYKYK Parking options: Plenty of street parking Kid-friendliness: their menu caters to all. My son who is a picky eater loves it but there isn’t anything for kids here besides good food with the family Whenever we come here it never disappoints. From the friendly staff to their diverse menu it’s always en enjoyable visit. Their menu is extensive with over 100 quality food items (mostly named after pop culture and historical icons) which could be overwhelming but to help their patrons they have 2 screens set up that play videos of ever sandwich its contents and how is looks and it’s awesome. Definitely stop in if you’re in the area and if you aren’t close I can honestly say a drive across town is worth it.
In a word amazing! !! If you haven't experienced a roast beef sandwich with caramelized onions & gravy on a toasted hero, you're life has yet to begin. I've yet to eat something here I didn't enjoy. If you don't know what subway means you’re not from the neighborhood, Come early avoid the lines .
So, lemme tell ya somethin' about the roast beef sandwich at John’s Deli in Brooklyn. This ain't just any sandwich, capisce? This is a freakin' masterpiece, alright? I ain't kiddin'. You bite into this thing, you know they ain't skimpin' on the beef. The meat's piled high, juicy, and tender, like it just got outta bed. They slice it thin, just like Ma used to, so it melts in your mouth, y'know? And the gravy? Oh, forget about it. It's like liquid gold, seasoned to perfection, like it was blessed by a freakin' saint. And don't even get me started on the bread. You need that crusty, fresh hero roll that’s got that perfect chew. It soaks up all that gravy, but it don’t get all soggy like some weak bread from a chain joint. Nah, this bread holds its own, like a real Brooklyn guy. And the kicker? They throw some mozzarella on there, melted just right, gives it that creamy, salty kick. You take a bite, you feel like you’re in freakin' heaven or somethin'. If you ain't been to John’s Deli for their roast beef, you're disrespectin' yourself. Seriously, do yourself a favor, head over there, and get the best freakin' sandwich in Brooklyn. It's a freakin' experience, alright? Even Tony would put his diet on hold for this one. So, whaddya waitin' for? Go get yourself a sandwich.
John’s Deli is a Brooklyn institution and provides so much history, it was a pleasure to dine here and try the Roast Beef Sandwich. The most surprising thing was that, despite its size and huge slices of beef, it was very light and was complimented very well by the onions and gravy. The beef was soft and easy to eat. This place gets a 5 star from me for the overall story!
I travelled all the way from Ireland via the Bronx to try the Johnnie roast beef sandwich and it lived up to the hype. Great atmosphere in the neighbourhood, friendly staff, great service and Awesome food! It's easy to get to just take the D train to coney island and get off at 25th Avenue. John's is across the street just down the road from the station. 10 out of 10. 100% recommend.
Great place in Brooklyn to grab breakfast, lunch and even dinner, They are open til 10pm. Great selection of sandwiches, heros, and food. The service is impeccable, and everyone is friendly and helpful. The place is very clean so love to see that and place has some dope pictures. Recommend 100%

A little more to pay for incredible portions, quality ingredients, and tradition. They know what they are doing.
Is good place to eat, however they don't have bathroom to the customers.
I had the "Tony Soprano" (roast beef, lettuce, tomato, mayo on a roll) with a side of macaroni salad. Sandwich was OK, the roll was the best part because it was fresh and slightly toasted. Macaroni salad wasn't to my taste. My friend had their signature roast beef sandwich with carmelized onions and dark gravy and he loved it. Service was friendly; a no frills kinda place, prices pretty standard. Gave the place a 2nd chance. Tried a different sammich-- sausage, peppers, onions, mozz, tomato sauce on a roll. Definitely enjoyed it. Upon the first bite, I immediately regretted not opting for a bacon egg and cheese on a roll because their bread is seriously the best part of the sandwich. A breakfast sandwich on their rolls is sure to be a revelation. I will go back and give that a go.
Will have to give a review relative to other Brooklyn Delis. Compared to other local Delis in BYlyn, food is only average. Compared to deli's in the NJ suburbs, 4.5. A bit over priced for the sandwich sizes. Order is always accurate. Usually only buy from here when friends from NJ request it.
Vegetarian review: The eggplant parmesan sandwich (Adrian Balboa) on a roll was absolutely fresh, crunchy and juicy. I added some hot peppers (cherry) but I don't recommend them and instead, request to add red chili flakes into the sauce because the vinegar in the peppers is too dominating. My only wish is that their sauce was a bit more flavorful. Next time, I will try it on the hero. My gold standard for eggplant parmesan is Santini's in Arlington, Virginia and next on my list is Paneantico.
Bensonhurst is the mecca for Italian heroes and Original John’s is a great option. I really like how customizable their heroes are - choose your own bread size, toppings and dressings. I got the Hank Moody on the 12” hero topped with the broccoli rabe spinach mix, fresh basil and pesto sauce. Even though it was prob enough to share I couldn’t stop eating and finished it feeling like a stuffed ravioli afterwards.
The Italian deli is located in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn since 1968. They prepare a wide variety of hot and cold heroes/sandwiches with different names. Breakfast sandwiches and platters are also available. Customers can make their own hero by selecting from many different combinations. I ordered the Tommy Devito named for the football quarterback. It was a chicken cutlet with spinach/broccoli on a long hero bread. The meatballs and riceballs were also very good. I had the rice ball with a pistachio nut filling which was very good and different. Friendly and quick service. Food was packaged well for pickup by customers.
It was close to lunchtime when I was passing by & there were some open parking spots on the ave so I decided to stop in for some takeout. I got a ham & cheese rice ball from their signature sides & a roast beef hero with mozzarella, onions & gravy which they’re know for. Which came to a little over $25. I then noticed a sign for desserts & I couldn’t pass trying a red velvet gelato truffle which ended up being a little less than $8 (I didn’t ask the price). The rice ball was tasty & the roast beef was pretty good & very filling. Later in the day I had the gelato truffle which was ok. If you’re in the area & in want something simple for lunch you should give it a try.
I never took the time to visit and eat and perhaps one day I would consider it. Unfortunately I always ordered takeout so I can not speak upon the atmosphere there . What I can say is that every time I ate from there I was not disappointed. Firstly their bread is top notch . The food is always hot . The food seems always fresh and even cooked with love. The delivery men are sweethearts .The wait on the order is short . The food comes at a timely fashion . I’m sure you can get something affordable that makes your full under ten dollars ; which is hard in nyc , with that being said if you around or driving in this area and want to eat something quick for yourself or family don’t forget this deli in which I got food here November 2024 to be exact getting a chicken sandwich that I still remember to this day that being the one with bbq and cheese and chicken but this one was just as flavorful and fulling . Thank you for reading ; have a grand day . I was told that salad was phenomenal so be sure to look at the menu careful.
This is an old school deli in Brooklyn. I got the roast beef with brown gravy on a pretzel roll. It was good but next time I am going to get a regular roll. I think that would be better. The service quick with no line. The price was okay. The restaurant had an old school feel to it. I love old school delis that have been in the neighborhood for years.
Consistent quality, very satisfying sandwiches. Highly recommend the Honey Bunny sandwich; honey turkey mozzarella sweet peppers and fresh tomatoes on a roll and the fried ravioli for about $9 each. 02/2024 The food was good, the service was friendly. Cash and credit are both accepted, but cash is cheaper. There is an additional 3% charge to credit card payments. The sandwiches are on the expensive side, where a roll costs between $9-10 for just meat cheese and bread. However, the flavors are good, and they make a quality sandwich. I ordered the Rocky Balboa, chicken parm with mozzarella, and the Apllo Creed, chicken cutlet with mozzarella and vodka sauce. Their is a small parking lot on the side of the building for parking and metered street parking available in front. 12/2023
Sandwiches are good. But 18$ for a 8 inch hero is absolutely insane. You're better off going to an actual pork store for a sandwich

I originally wanted to order chicken cheese fries, total came out to $30. I kindly said never mind and instead asked for a chicken sandwich on a hero with mozzarella cheese, total came out to $11. The sandwich was literally chicken cutlet and mozzarella cheese that's it. Perhaps it was my fault for not requesting lettuce, tomato, or other toppings but I mean I have ordered a chicken sandwhich countless of times in hundreds of location, lettuce, tomato is usually a must. Either way, sandwich was good, extremely dry but good. Service was fast and cashier was nice.
We had lunch here last week and we ordered some sandwiches from their extensive menu. Can’t comment on the atmosphere because we took them to go. The sandwiches were not bad, but we had some issues that made them far less gratifying than we expected — the “fresh mozzarella” was an extremely thin slice of something vaguely reminiscent of true mozzarella and that was the most unfortunate negative highlight. So, while we opted to forego a couple of the options on the sandwich (like, the tomato salad comes with fresh onions, which we don’t like) which may make the sandwiches more moist, we were counting on the mozzarella to provide the moisture, and that simply did not happen, causing the sandwiches to be fairly dry… That was really disappointing! The one with chicken parmigiana was saucy and definitely better. Taste overall was good but the price was the same for the order with or without the tomato salad (nothing was deducted from price by not having it) and no additional condiments were offered (or adding more broccoli rabe than the standard amount). The price for the overall value was a bit steep… Up the mozz quality to live up to the expectations, and add more condiment options, please! Other sandwiches than what we picked may have been better, though…
I think my chicken came a little undercooked, but i called the store back and the woman working the phone was super understanding and assured me they would send me a new sandwich and check to make sure it’s cooked. It was super fast and she called me to let me know it was on the way. 5 star customer service for sure.
I was in the area, & in the mood for cold cut sandwich. For starters, they have so many options to choose from, cold/hot sandwiches and hot food. The names of their sandwiches are pretty cool, it’s From movies and famous shows. Although the food is good, the service sucks. Idk if it was me, or the employees, but one of us seemed lost. The guy asked me what would I like to order, but then seemed confused when I ordered. It took him a little while to get it together. It was simple because We had cold cut sandwiches and ordered a side of fried ravioli. I heard this place used to be really good back in the days, but not so much now. I’ll go back again & try a hot sandwich next time.
I got here at 230pm on a Friday and it was not that busy and ordered the Johnny roast beef with onions, mozzarella and sauce. The meat was fresh and the bread crispy but it was missing something that I could boost this review to 5 stars. Price is ok and there is indoor sitting is fine.
I grew up eating the meatball parm hero and I ordered it today and was disappointed. Hardly any sauce or cheese, and skimpy on the meatball. Maybe today was a bad day.
Massively overhyped place. Service is okay for a deli and food is just average. You gotta have no taste buds to call this place great
For the $20 price to the quality of the food I'm a little surprised at how well it was rated. It's a completely normal and average roast beef sandwich with a gravy that has like some molasses added to it which makes it sweet which is fine and has a cool color. 😐 Wacky pricing for complete run of the mill roast beef.
Let me start off by saying that the fried ravioli is probably the best I have ever tasted. Their gravy is really good as well. Sandwiches are all named after Italian film and television show series characters all the way from The godfather, to The sopranos, to my cousin Vinny etc.. for what the sandwiches are, variations on Italian classics, eggplant parmesan, chicken parmesan, etc. they are in my opinion Ridiculously overpriced! And taste somewhat the same after a few. The rice pudding which I was told was superb, was lackluster and not creamy at all, very bland in fact. And after spending $50 plus dollars for two sandwiches, fried ravioli and a soda, I asked to try a small sample/spoon of the rice pudding to which I was told absolutely no but the kid at the register. I'm glad I didn't buy more to bring home given the disappointment the pudding was. All in all, in my humble opinion, this way out the way spot to get to, is not worth the trip. Going to your local Italian deli or pizzeria will definitely serve you better and will be much much lighter on your wallet.. but by all means, please don't listen to me, experience it for yourself.
My Uncle raved about how great this place was when he’d last been here 20 plus years ago. I was looking forward to it, but sad to say it was disappointing. A lot of the reviews here wax poetic about the roast beef; I didn’t like it at all. It was not seasoned well and I didn’t like the gravy. The place is understaffed and the woman taking orders was clearly overwhelmed by both phone orders and people ordering at the counter. We opted to eat there; there’s a small outdoor area with a few tables. There’s no table service. I went in to pick up our sizable order and they got a lot of it wrong which required a couple of trips back and forth to sort it out. The previously mentioned overwhelmed woman taking the orders couldn’t be bothered so I had to speak to the guys who were making the sandwiches (limited English proficiency) and we eventually got it straightened out. I think the hype about this place is unwarranted. Best thing we had from there was the chocolate lava cake. They have a help wanted sign in the window looking for a delivery driver, but they need to hire some more staff to help out inside the restaurant. It got extremely busy during the time we were there. We won’t be going back; there are too many other really great delis in Brooklyn and my all-time favorite is Sal, Kris and Charlie’s in Astoria (Queens). If it isn’t on your bucket list, it should be! I think I’ve had better roast beef at Arby’s. The sandwich at John’s and the service left a lot to be desired.
I ordered a simple cold cut sandwich- ham, salami, fresh mozzarella, lettuce and Mayo on a hero and a plain rice ball, nothing special. However, I was really disappointed with the poor quality of the sandwich. They gave me an old stale and hard bread which made the sandwich hard to eat and they literally put a slice of fresh mozzarella yet they charge you extra for fresh mozzarella. Very disappointed!
I just had a hair in my roast beef order I took to go. I feel it's no accident because they always look back at you to see if you're looking at different stages of making your food. The hair was on t…
Might be the worst pastrami sandwich I’ve ever had. I traveled there thinking this place has fresh home made pastrami…boy was I wrong! It was deli style pastrami (possibly boars head) re-heated on a grill, or microwaved, and slapped on a hero for $18.00? Save your money, and go to a local deli for half that price. The only positive thing I can say about this place is the bread was decent…never again!
I went there today order a chicken parm and a small tomato salad mind you I grew up in the neighborhood always went there for years ,the chicken was burnt from the fryer ate half threw the rest in the garbage never again
We ordered Johnnys Roast Beef on a roll and the Leo (tuna salad) on a hero. The roast beef was ultra chewy like meat that had been microwaved and the roast beef gravy flavored like cheap beef ramen. The tuna salad had imitation crab meat in it which cause it to taste like nothing like tuna salad. I also had the pasta salad which was so-so, more oil flavored than anything else. I’m really disappointed in this place based on the reviews.
I recently ordered a roast beef sandwich and to say I was disappointed would be an understatement. The bread was dry and stale, lacking any of the softness or flavour you’d expect. The roast beef itself was dry and chewy, as if it had been sitting out for days! I was really excited to try this place, but overall, it didn’t live up to the hype.
I ordered a Roast beef with fried onions & Mozzerella cheese I can honestloy say DRY the roast beef not as much meat as prior times ordering from them the same item let alone the onions were not at all juicy like they had been in past times very disapointed for another 10 I could have had grilled chicken thighs with rice & Shepards salad but do to past good experiences I ordered the Roast beef instead will not go again especially after a bad review god knows what they would do or put in my sandwhich
