Outstanding customer service and attention to detail. The ambiance is great, and the jazz music performing in the background was wonderful! The best part was the tasty food. We went there for brunch on a Sunday and ordered the pancakes which were sooooo good!! I also ordered the mushroom bowl. I can’t remember the name but I’m sharing a picture of it. This was my favorite! Filled with potatoes, veggies and mushroom! Very filling as well. I would highly recommend this place. The staff were all very attentive and friendly. My husband and I had a 10/10 experience.

My husband and I held our rehearsal dinner at Black Rail this May and it was an amazing experience! We worked with Brittany for at least a year and she was so easy to work with and patient as we took our time to configure our menu, ask a ton of questions, and work to make our special day a reality. We stayed up the street at the Omni La Costa for our wedding weekend, so the location was prime for us. The private space is beautiful and the team made sure every detail was perfect. Our food was amazing and we loved our menu! Everything was seamless, the bar was perfection, and we were able to rent a mic setup from the restaurant as well, which was perfect for speeches. We were so happy with our dinner and would recommend Black Rail to anyone for a private event, rehearsal dinner, or just a regular date night!

FYI music is only on the weekends. They have indoor and outdoor seating.The indoor seating is very nice.The outdoor is, well it's not completely covered.So it is outdoors, so it might be cold. I ordered the spicy seafood soup. I had it without the extra chili. I also had a small caesar salad and Ice tea.

Exceptional dining experience. Warm and welcoming staff, unique and tasty food, with delicately balanced fresh flavors. Interesting cocktail and wine choices, open relaxed venue with a unique decor (a bit loud on Fri night, don’t try to conduct business😁). Our server Nicole C had impeccable timing and guided our choices with her expertise, curating a wonderful meal from start to finish. Lovely adult dining experience. Would not recommend for children (does not mean you could not bring them, just might be a bit hectic and loud for little ones? … of course we were there on a Friday night). We will definitely be back!

We sat outside so the pictures are a little dark . They have lap blankets , heaters and fires to keep you warm. The drinks were tasty. The chimichurri lentils blew my mind. Steak sandwich was so tender and didn’t fall apart when bitten into . Their desserts were delish. Reservations are suggested as they do fill up

Came here for the Jazz Brunch and it was incredible. Loved the guy on the keys as well as the amazing singer. We had a side of pancakes before our meal that were thin, warm and delightful. My New York Steak and eggs were cooked to perfection and we left very happy. Amazing service by our server and the staff, both friendly and attentive. 5 stars and will definitely be back next time we are in the Carlsbad area.

What is not to like about this place? The food and drinks are excellent. The outdoor seating area is elegantly decorated with warm lighting, cushions to rest your back, heaters, and blankets for cold or windy days. How thoughtful is that? The drinks are pricey but are crafted with unique flavors and a twist of finesse. We have enjoyed both the indoor and the outdoor atmosphere, both are great! The light fixtures and branches over the bar is impressive!

This place is great for a girls night out, business dinner or date. The menu has great variety and their wine selection is really good. I've tried the mussels, pickled veggies, lamb tacos, garlic shrimp, brussel sprouts, steak, potatoes and octopus salad, THEY ARE ALL GREAT CHOICES. Service was fantastic and prices are very reasonable. If you haven't tried it yet, go visit them. You'll leave happy.

This place has a bit of everything… great food, great drinks, great service, and even some great entertainment. First off the entrance is around the corner from where the entrance looks, we sat on the patio since it was such a beautiful day. Our server was fantastic, got our drinks up and running (beer and wine), and then moved onto recommendations. We had a couple friends with us and the server told us to get the charcuterie plate to start, a good portioned out starter. We moved onto soups, salads, margarita Pizza and the lamb meatballs. The food was Devine and the perfect portions. We closed out on the olive oil cake, which was fluffy and light. Another highlight was we got a jazz band playing outside and when they started playing the whole patio filled up. On the way out we headed to the inner part and they had a piano player. So you get two different kinds of music depending upon which part you down in. This place has it all! We definitely are coming back! One word of note the prices are a bit high but it’s well worth it for the food and atmosphere.

I came here on my first night in Carlsbad on a Friday night without a reservation. I was lucky enough to get a table right behind the piano. The restaurant was bustling along with live music playing, which was a nice touch while dining. My waiter was very nice and friendly and the staff brought out the food fairly quickly. The empanadas were amazing, and while the meatballs were spicy, they were very flavorful. The little gem salad was pretty good, especially with the shaved anchovies on top. All in all, from the service to the drinks, the live music and the food, it was a perfect dining experience. I would definitely come back and try other items on the menu and hope they don't run out of the créme brûlée on my next visit.

Great atmosphere! I can’t speak to the food really I just came to see the live band and have the olive oil cake- and both were great! My friend had some drinks and said they were tasty. The cake was great and definitely recommend. The band is the same every week and is great! The pianist is the owners son so him and his friends have a little jam sesh every Sunday and it’s great. Some super talented guys.

The atmosphere and food is very upscale and always an amazing experience! The shrimp is always our go to appetizer and the pasta is great as well! Anytime we want a more high end dining or lunch experience we reserve a spot here at Black Rail. Staff is always friendly and conscious well!

Great restaurant and incredible food. We went there for our anniversary and we were seated by the bar. I was not happy about it. I told The hostess about changing our seat and she didn’t seem to care and said that she couldn’t do anything. So I seeked out the owner/ manager and told him I wanted to be near the piano and main lounge. He immediately got is up and put us in a prime table. Now thats service. This is definitely a place to go for a nice dinner and live music. Food is sensational

We had our 40th HS reunion here and it was perfect! Great atmosphere for large parties or groups but also provides a cozy, intimate setting for more personal dining. The food and service was outstanding. Highly recommend!

They had music outdoors and we asked to be seated away from it. There is tons of seating indoors and outdoors. On Sunday night, they have a 3 course dinner for 2 option for $79+taxes. My friend and I did the math, which was mathing so we chose this option. We got the crispy brussel sprouts, the Moroccan braised lamb meatballs and the tomato basil pasta and the semifreddo for dessert. The food was all very good and we enjoyed our choices. We would recommend all of our choices again and would eat the same exact menu again. The semifreddo was actually surprisingly great. My friend and I are thinking of making this our usual haunt to catch up.

In fairness I'm not a big pasta person, so I probably shouldn't even have ordered it. (But Wanted something different). Would return here next time we're in town.

The pork brine was flavorful and easily one of our favorites of the evening. However, the music stopped around 9 PM and remained off for about 45 minutes. Just as we were reaching the peak of the evening and getting into the mood, the silence felt like a letdown. Last year’s band had everyone dancing—kids, couples, everyone was on their feet, enjoying the music. This year’s band didn’t quite capture that same energy, and the gap in music took away from the festive vibe. While we might return for a jazz brunch (which sounds amazing), we’ll likely try somewhere new for next year’s New Year’s Eve dinner. Overall, a good evening with fantastic food, but a few missed beats in the ambiance.

The place is nice, decor inside and patio outside are inviting and comfortable. The service is excellent. The food is good although on the pricey side considering the size of the portions. In general it's a good place for a special occasion but be ready for the check $$$$

We used to enjoy coming to this restaurant for their salads, wine selection and other variety of food. But lately, we've felt that the wait staff is more "let's add more to the price" "let's suggest higher priced options" and not really that interested in "helping." And a COMPLETE shock from last night's meal - an additional SERVICE CHARGE of $3.30 which our server told us was somewhere " buried" in the menu. When I asked what it was for, he replied "to help offset the restaurant's overhead." I said "What?" He then replied "It's ok, I can take it off. We were planning to update the menu anyway and remove it." Now $3.30 is the price of a bubble gum I suppose. But, it's the GALL that the restaurant will bury this somewhere on the menu and then surprise you on the bill. For that you get a 2 star for sure. How many of you have noticed this on YOUR bill. Shame on Black Rail. We will not be patronizing your restaurant again in the future.

Let the server know the issue, he took it back to the bar, then came back and said this is how we serve it here, I said it’s not I get it here all the time. The bar tender was huffy about it and threw some ice in the glass with soda water. I was super nice about my request and not demanding and even apologized for ordering it in a champagne glass instead of a wine glass originally. The attitude of the server and unfortunately the bar tender was arrogant and not one of service to others. We literally got up and left when we saw that. We come here and spend money. Thought more highly of this place before tonight. Should have grabbed his name. That bar tender does not care about doing things correctly and being of service to the guest who are paying to eat there. The date and time: Friday 12/5/2025 7:45 PM. Whomever the bar tender was at this time needs to be retrained for service.
