Opinions de Norman's Grill Castro Valley
Norman's Grill is the heart of Castro Valley's dining scene, perfectly delivering classic American diner culture in a fun nostalgic atmosphere decorated with 60's music albums. This long standing institution serves a massive menu of hearty comfort food all day. Must try items are the steak & eggs, corned beef hash and country fried steak. Friendly service, quality, tasty comfort food.
Breakfasts are like home cooking and plenty of food. Friendly staff. A favorite place to eat.
If you’re looking for a spot that feels like stepping back into the 80s and 90s, Norma’s Grill nails it. We ordered a burger and a turkey bacon sandwich and both were excellent, simple, tasty, and satisfying in that classic diner way. The whole place is dripping with nostalgia. Sitting here, I can imagine my teenage self hanging out with friends, and as a Gen Xer today, it still feels like the kind of place I would want to linger. The food is solid, the staff is genuinely friendly, and the décor adds to that time capsule charm. Norma’s Grill is not trying to reinvent the wheel and that is the beauty of it. It is comfort, community, and good food, exactly what you want in a neighborhood spot.
As you like it diner style. I'm really pleased with how you can basically have the American breakfast you probably free up with. Country fried chicken steak and gravy has been my favorite growing and glad to have a place to get some. They say fluffy pancakes and did we get FLUFFY PANCAKES. I was pretty happy. I really enjoy the vinyl around the diner walls. It gives the place character.
Norman's Grill has been here in Castro Valley for decades. Has a retro vibe with classic American records and their album covers decorate the walls. Food is tasty, hearty American comfort food (breakfast, lunch, dinner). We thoroughly enjoyed eating the crispy, crunchy seasoned fried chicken & waffles and the chicken parmesan sandwich served on a French Roll and french fries. As of March 17, 2021, in-person indoor dining is available. Kid-Friendly & Senior Friendly -- both have dedicated menus. Easy to get in and out. Wait staff is friendly. Service is efficient and quick.
Great food at a great price. Fast and friendly service .
A solid American diner with waitresses you’ll love. Large portions (too large if you ask me) but maybe some folks like that. The California Benedict was reasonably good and definitely enjoyable. I would like to see a little fresh parsley or paprika on top—just that garnish to make it look *fresher* and have the appearance of being a bit more high quality. The hollandaise sauce was basic. Easy fixes and opportunities to go above and beyond. But for now, no real complaints and glad to have dined there! It put me in a good mood. May go back next time I’m in the area.
In general, everything is good. It's cool that you can sit outside. The food was prepared quite quickly, which was very good because we did not have much time. The scenery here immerses you in the world of music and seems to transport you back 20 years. I would like them to have new cutlery. It can be seen that the forks and spoons were used a lot. In my opinion, it is time to replace them with new ones.
A great brunch spot around Castro valley. Norman is pretty old school, in terms of decoration, food and service. The local mom and pop diner feeling make you feel like eating at home. All the servers are friendly and nice. The food portion is slightly on the big side, I think I could probably finish about 80% of the order. You have classic brunch items like omelette, egg Benedict, hash brown etc. You could also pick a sandwich or a toast. If you wanna something a bit more heavy, grab some pasta, some steak. The store has both indoor and outdoor seating. You are looking at about 25-30 per person.
My Hubby loves the Chicken Fried Steak. I love having Breakfast at Norman's Grill. It gives me a break and have never been disappointed. The Service is Excellent. Once a week I place a to go order of Chicken Fried Steak with am extra patty. It is his Lunch and Dinner at work. I love the cozy friendliness.
So I liked little dive places, they usually offered up decent food, mediocre decor at a great value. This place used to be that. Then one day I took my family in and we ate or meal came time to pay and realized I spent a mortgage payment on breakfast. I looked at the receipt and it was 6 dollars for a glass of OJ. I just never checked and that was the last time I have been here are it is not worth the money. Hills on Foothill is pretty good and a decent meal for the money. Or even JP right next door for a cleaner place and very good food for a little less than this place. I am just so disappointed in what has transpired with his place. If you do have to go the eggs Benedict are pretty good just be prepared to pay for them as if there is gold flakes embedded in there somehow.
This place is hit and miss. Sometimes the food is good and sometimes not. I usually go there for breakfast. The service is the same. Depending on which server you get. The place is busy on weekends. I had eggs country potatoes. The country potatoes use to be really good. Lately, they haven't been cooked all the way. Now, I put my coffee cup in front to get another serving. Or otherwise, the server doesn't come back around.
The food was okay I had a Reuben which had the best corned beef on it but it's a strange Ruben because it hardly had any sauerkraut, maybe about a tablespoon, and it had no thousand Island or any sauce of any kind, or any cheese. The potato salad was pretty good. The service left a lot to be desired and it took us a while to get the waitresses attention when we wanted to leave and pay the bill. They were somewhat busy but the place was maybe half full. I probably wouldn't go back
The restaurant is easy to locate, and it has a parking lot, where it is lack of maintenance. Their service is ok. Food is ok too but the quantity is bit less than other similar restaurants in Alameda. If you live in the surrounding area, worth to try it. Otherwise it is not worth to drive from far away.
Walked in and waiter and manager just stared at me. No one in line, only a few people eating at 2:30. Apparently they had better things to do like count money and organize napkin rings. Manager asked what I wanted, I said I'm not sure is there a menu? He pointed to an area with newspapers, napkins, and other parafenelia. When I was ready to order it was an inconvenience to ring me up. Asking if it was to go or here, I said for here, and they both recoiled in shock saying oh sit anywhere. I'll look on the way out but pretty sure there's not a sign saying that and they for sure didn't ask. Not a great way to greet customers. Guess from the other reviews they already have a loyal following and don't need to impress. 11$ sandwich is toast, hamburger, cheese, onion. No silverware or napkin - had to track mine down, empty ketchup, filthy floors.
