I ordered to go so I can only review the food we have gotten a few times in Castro Valley. Every order and item we had was Delish! Our mac n cheese was creamy with melted cheese that tastes like sharp white cheddar! The baked beans have pieces of meat in them. Slaw was chopped and super yummy. And our ribs were perfect! Not fatty like most places.
Good food, fast service. Sit outside and enjoy the nice weather. Never had a bad meal there. The tri tip sandwich is excellent. Thank you Canyons BBQ for being my go to place when in Castro Valley.
The pulled pork sandwich I had was absolutely delicious. The pork was slow-cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, with just the right amount of smoky taste. The bun was soft, with a tasty garlic flavor and provided a great contrast to the savory pork. Overall, a great combination of flavors and textures. My husband got the brisket sandwich, the meat was cooked perfectly and it was very flavorful. Highly recommended! Also, when they run out of meat, they’re done for the day with it! Today they were already out of the chicken and tri-tip and it was only around 1pm.
Not understanding the negative reviews here, still in their soft opening but the service was good. The food was good. There's the outdoor seating area next to the smoker. There's an indoor seating area, there's some street parking and or parking in the marketplace Ordered: Lil plate which was more than enough food Brisket 10/10 Garlic bread 6/10 ok Mac and Cheese side 9/10 The brisket was so tender it fell apart. No knife necessary and very tasty. The garlic bread was okay. Not great, not awful. A little unnecessary. I was torn on which side to order and they recommended the mac and cheese and it was very good They have merchandise for sale inside and a huge mural and the indoor dining area
The breakfast taco was very good, I payed alittle more because I got the brisket taco but I liked the flavor and the meat portion was enough for a taco tender and with that BBQ flavor was a treat! The place look so nice and cozy as well will be returning
Never goes wrong in this local restaurant! Can’t wait to share how much I loved this place, I feel my words can’t describe how amazing they are!they have high quality bbq brisket and pork rib, nice and patio to relax and chill with friends and family gatherings. Definitely would like to come again and again👍
Had 2 meat combo tri tip, pork ribs, side beans & tater salad with corn bread 🍞. Wife had brisket sandwich with fries. Beans had a sweet hot flavor I even added the picked onions n peppers to it, 👍. Everything was great. Corn bread was good. Definitely coming back. Great addition to our neighborhood and business.
Good food! Breakfast is a deal. Santa Maria salad is one of our favorites. All the meats are good, the seasonal turkey offerings are too. Lots of beer options, but I prefer cider and they usually have a few to choose from. The outdoor seating is nice day or night.
Canyons Barbecue is a solid restaurant. We have enjoyed multiple lunches and dinners, both dine in and takeout there This year I ordered a smoked turkey and pumpkin pie from them for Thanksgiving and it was phenomenal. I’m glad they are one of our independent choices for local dining.
I didn't want to try this place because I'm not a big bbq fan. But actually loved it and will be back! All sides and meats I tried were very good.
The staff at Canyon’s BBQ is always so welcoming, and the food is consistently great. I stopped in during the holidays and Debbie went above and beyond to helpful, truly excellent service! I got the large Gaucho sandwich combo with garlic and a mac & cheese side for $24, plus a regular turkey meal with mac & cheese, fries, and a slice of garlic bread for $16.50. All in, it was $45 and absolutely worth it. Would highly recommend!
This review is only for the seasonal Rhubarb pie.. and what a pie it is! Really good rhubarb and probably one of the best. Also comes with a side of ice cream. Easy to find parking, although its difficult to see the restaurant as its on the back side of Philz and on a side street. They must sell out quickly of dessert because this is all they had left at 3:30pm, but this pie didnt disappoint. It was like $9.00 for a slice; i hardly eat out nowadays, but im assuming that's a normal price? Will be back soon to try other desserts (probably get there earlier next time).
As someone who grew up in the south and has been looking for BBQ to scratch that itch, this is some of the best BBQ I've eaten on the west coast. I got the pulled pork sandwich and thoguht the meat was perfectly cooked. I also enjoyed the BBQ and Spicy BBQ sauce that you can pour yourself. Which is great, because I normally like a ton of sauce on BBQ sandwiches.
Everything was delicious! The outside seating is lovely. Their corn bread is the definition of PERFECT 4 meat combo plate with 2 side for $50 is a steal ( was able to share with another person and still were both satisfied with the portion size)
I've heard a lot about this place here in Castro Valley. The burnt ends we're okay just a little bit salty for me but other than that they were flavorful and very tender. The brisket sandwich I had was excellent juicy flavorful and the bread was perfect I will definitely come back again
As a former Houstonian, incredible brisket. As a current Kansas City-an, dry/tough burnt ends. Ribs were good apparently though and beans, so 5 stars.
Nice Bbq restaurant in Castro Valley near the marketplace. There is a decent selection of BBQ meats and sides with a couple of choices of sauces. There are a few good bbq restaurants in the east bay but this is a strong contender with nice flavors and good techniques for smoked meat. We like the ribs, sausages and brisket.
Great Smells, Awesome Tri-Tip. Great Staff. Customer Service with a Smile ☺️😁. Great Potato Salad. Neat Clean indoor dining. Outdoor dining available as well. Cool Soda Fountain. Root Beer Floats. Great Desserts. Cool Smoker. Easy to find. Easy to park. Nice area with shopping close. Burnt Ends are a Must. Very Tastee Meal.

I like the food here at Canyons Barbecue, the ribs are 🔥 I also like the brisket!!! On my next trip I'll have to try one of the desserts 🍨 🥧.... I'll say if you're on the fence about trying the food here.... Come get you some grub, you will not be disappointed!!!

What a wonderful addition to Castro Valley. We love coming here! Excellent flavors on the bbq and rotating beer list is amazing. I know it's bbq but I get the bbq on a salad because their produce is always super fresh as well. Cheers 🍻🩷
Nothing but positive things to say about Canyon’s BBQ! We love to split their BBQ meal combo - pulled pork and chicken are our favs! Their cornbread is heavenly so make sure you select that as your bread option. I’ve also tried their BBQ Mac (creamy and delicious) and their Santa Maria salad (perfect for 2 people or leftovers for 1).
I ordered Takeout for a retirement party. The price was reasonable for a party of 12 with package meals and two sides of links. Package comes with choice of side. I requested double order of macaroni and cheese. Comes with plenty of BBQ sauce on side. We enjoyed the tender tasty ribs. One person commented that she normally doesn't enjoy brisket but found thier brisket favorable, tender and juicy.
I didn’t get his name, but the manager working the register on 12/17 around 6:30 pm was extremely nice and welcoming. It was our first time there and he treated us so well & even through in some add ins on the house due to it being our first time. Amazing manager & will definitely come back due to his hospitality. The food was amazing! Definitely listen to his recommendations cause they were on point!
I’m so glad we have this lovely restaurant in town. I can see that many people enjoy coming here as well and they are always busy - I’ve never had a problem that they could not solve. Customer service is excellent always - Everyone is very friendly and they greet you with a smile and they seem to love working here which makes a big difference. And in addition, their food is just fabulous. Reminds me of the time I was in Dallas and I could honestly say that their food is comparable to The barbecue there. I always want to go here on the weekend because I’m so busy during the week. And I have to try everything on their menu, including their desserts so that will be my goal. Thank you again for making it a great experience for me
After my granddaughter’s softball game, we decided to try Canyons Barbeque in Castro Valley for dinner. It was our first time there, and I can say we will definitely be going back. We arrived a little late and unfortunately the ribs were already sold out. However, my husband ordered a rib sandwich, so we still got to taste the rib meat—and it was absolutely delicious. Next time we’ll make sure to get there earlier so we can order the ribs! The mac and cheese was fantastic, the prices were very reasonable, and the atmosphere was fun and relaxed. We sat outside and it was a beautiful evening. While I was waiting at the bar for drinks, there was a very disgruntled customer who was extremely rude from the start. I had been behind him when we ordered, and unfortunately I witnessed his behavior toward the staff. One of the employees—whose name I believe was Rocco (forgive me if I misspelled it)—handled the situation like a total professional. Honestly, if I owned a business, I’d hire someone like him in a heartbeat. Overall, the food was great, the drinks were wonderful, and the employees were amazing. We’ll definitely be bringing our family back again—this time early enough to get those ribs! 😊

Updated August 2024. We’ve always taken out food from here but for this visit, we decided to eat in. Also tried their burnt ends which was good! ——————————— We tried 3 different meats & while the chicken & pork ribs were good, the brisket was the star. We’re ordering that on its own next time so we get more! Among the side dishes, we liked the mac & cheese and potato salad but not a fan of their coleslaw.
This is a pretty good BBQ place but you have to come early. I got here at 6:30 PM and when I ordered my food they were already out of most the meats I got what was left their Tri-tip and half Chicken with beans and cornbread. Both the chicken and Tri-tip was so juicy and mosit had good flavor and with their home made BBQ sauce it’s a really good bbq. I would most definitely come back to try their other meats. The beans were ok and I wish the cornbread was sweet but it was still moist too not dry at all. They also have a great selection of craft beers from local breweries and a nice souvenirs section with their rubs and BBQ sauce and clothing. Very cool place with indoor seating with TVs at the bar to catch a game and a nice fireplace outside. Most definitely a place to check out.
When it's good it's amazing when it's bad it's dry like Jerkey. I had family over braging about finding country bbq and when I wanted to show them our favorite like number one! They let me down and the meat is totally dry. I even called to make sure it was tender enough for my greatgrandma. I am so sad I know it's better than that, but now... shame on me for being in the bay and say I found great bbq. I just wanted consistency. I was so proud and then I was embarrassed. I still love them, but now I can't show my out of town family. They don't believe me anymore 😔 😪. But They are AMAZING like sooooo good! They are still the only BBQ we go to. Im just the laughing stock of my family lol yall almost got me committed! 🤣🤣🤣
The brisket is delicious! So soft it breaks apart easily. The ribs are not dry. The mac and cheese gives Olive Garden fettucines at first bite. The corn bread is NOT it but the garlic bread is great, especially with the brisket. One two meat combo, with extra side and bread is big enough for two people.
That is some melt-in-your-mouth brisket! 🍖 I could see some folks complaining that it's a little too charred and a little too seasoned, but for me, it was delicious. Yes, I know brisket is meant to be charred! 🧄 Loved the garlic mac and cheese, but could use a little more excitement in the coleslaw and garlic bread. 🍺 Nice beer selection. Will def go back! You do have to hunt for inside seats on a cold night - plenty of outdoor seating!
Got word that this place existed while looking for something different in the area so I decided to try it because I love BBQ everything. As I arrived I noticed a very beautfiul and large out door seating area right out front. I also noticed there was an unused fire pit which I would loved to come back and sit next to in another visit. The entrance large and as soon as you enter you are settled directly in front of the menu and registers. There's two options to pick from in the sandwhich category, a half and full size options and all of them come with 1 side and there's a plentiful selection of sides to choose from. I order and they took my number to text me to notify me when my order was ready. Right across from the menu was a separate bar area with two televisions on and a wide selection of IPA's to choose from which unfortunately are not my preference which is why, this was a dry run for me... shocker! It happens folks, I can survive with out booze! Behind that was an inside dinning hall and restrooms. The place was nicely air conditioned to boot. I got BBQ Pulled Pork sandwhich with a side of Garlic Bread and a Hot Link sandwhich with a side of Fries. The BBQ Pulled Pork was delicious, they add a container of BBQ that they make themselves which, with out it, would have been DEVASTATING to my experience because that sauce was lit! The Garlic Bread side did not hit the spot the same though, it was lightly seasoned with garlic butter and both soggy and crunchy. I wouldn't call it bad but it does leave a bit to be desired. The Hot Link sandwhich was delicious as well! I didn't know onions were included and I removed them because it just didn't seem right in my opinion, but I left everything else as is. The Fries would have been almost perfect had it not been so salty. I loved salty fries and even I was like "woah nelly!". I ultimately enjoyed the entire joint, I got my order to go but I want to try a couple other items on the menu so I'm going to return, very good work there ladies and gents!
I got BBQ meal regular size. Side foods and corn bread made me full. I wish they would offer more meat instead of 2 sides and bread. Tasty food. Very popular place. Avoid peak time or order ahead of time online. There are indoor and outdoor tables. Food menu has variety, sandwiches, BBQ meal...
I had an excellent mixed green salad with berries and brisket. I chose the location for covid safety because the outdoor picnic tables looked inviting, but they didn't have the fire pit turned on at lunchtime. (We should have asked.) They might want to invest in efficient patio heaters, too. (I didn't check out their indoor dining area). The staff was helpful in making my selection at the counter.
02/15/26, I'm glad for "decent" but overpriced at $65 for 2-2 meat plates & 2 drinks. The cornbread is awesome along with the same dose of awesomeness for the mac-N-cheese and potato salad. The meat options are good, the burnt ends were not exactly burnt ends, more like burnt pieces. Chicken was standard, pork ribs were great. No idea about beef ribs, they had a big sign posted that beef ribs were sold out for the next 2 days. The beans were over spicy with no warning for spicy, in KC spicy beans are called Cowboy beans to distinguish hot from flavorful and by all means do pass on the coleslaw, it had no love on it at all. We'll come back but be more choice conscious for the price. Thanks for representing BBQ even though it's overpriced for what was served. $32.50 with a drink and tax for the picture uploaded and you tell me? The soda fountain is BOMB. Oh yeah, the staff is fairly attentive but good enough 👍
Tried this spot because I was craving ribs and Mac n cheese. The brisket definitely not my choice,, mine was tough and dry as well as my ribs. Felt like last nights food just reheated .. the spicy bbq sauce is gats damn delicious I kinda forgot my food was dry. Mac n cheese was fire as well.. was hoping they served greens the beans were spicy as hell and not enjoyable, then the limp cornbread didn’t make it any better.. the service is mediocre, they take your number and text you when your food is ready.
Stopped by to try it. Got a three meat combo, ribs, brisket and link sausage. French fries and coleslaw for the sides and a Pepsi because they didn't have sprite or 7/up? Like what? Brisket was solid, link was a standard polish keilbasa and the ribs were just over being a little too done but solid flavor. Fries were ok but they need to step up their fry game, and the coleslaw was meh. I mean if a place can't come up with a bomb coleslaw then I don't know what to say. Overall very trendy place, not quite hipster burger joynt trendy but for sure leaning into it. And once again asked to tip for fast casual beyond 10% is over the top. It's like if you went to a convince store and they charge you 10-20% more just because. So in the end it's BBQ, give it a try but Canyons was really solid but not quite last meal on earth great. :)
We were out exploring and thought we'd give this place a shot for dinner. The food was absolutely amazing, the inside was pretty cool, but the parking was a nightmare. They're situated right next to a super busy intersection with loads of restaurants and every store you could possibly imagine. They didn't even give us any napkins or utensils with our take out. I'm not sure if that's just them or not. But, we did like the BBQ.
First time at the restaurant in Castro Valley. Friendly staff, cool outdoor dining area with live music, along with indoor seating as an option. Good selection of meats and side dishes. Large selection of beers on tap. Overall food was pretty good. You enter the restaurant and place your order at the counter. Head to a table to start sipping our beers and wait for a text or food was ready. The text arrived very fast, headed inside to pick up our three dine in meals. Not thrilled with the fact the dine in meals are placed on the counter where people are sampling and ordering beers on tap…. Yes, I’ll go back mainly for the cool vibe and nice people.

A little loud, sound echos. Sodas are off a bit, coke tastes like salt water. Beans were bad, chicken appears slightly undercooked, cornbread tasteless if you even imagine that, macaroni and cheese cold and tasteless, coleslaw extremely plain, can't recommend a darn thing. Over priced, $9 for a potato.
I walked in and I formed the employee it was first time there and asked her for recommendation on what to order. She gave no advice. She said everyone different. I ordered Tri tip meal with 2 sides and a drink over $20 for 1 person. On the expensive side. Tri tip was very dry salty came with 3 barbecue sauces which was highly needed in order to palate the tri tip so dry and served cold. French fries were good hot and fresh. It took 20 min to get my order. Mac and cheese was hot white sauce and cheese simply but good small portion. Corn bread was horrible its cooked on a baking sheet thin and slapped on the grill to warm and was greasy with no flavor. While I waited someone came in a tasting for catering and his food was platted and ready in 5min. Diffentley the food is on the hot table. Service was rated lower because lack of intrest from the employees. Employee lacked the ability to provide a friendly service to customer. Atmoshere is rated high because the restaurant hold outstanding decor and vibe for a place to gather. Indoors tribute to Castro Valley. Out door shaded picnic tables and chairs around a firepit. Diffently A+ for Atmoshere. As far a price for quality and value I think the place is lacking business model. Pre-cooked and prepared food for a family of 4 you are looking at over a 100$. This may be why the the restaurant during prime lunch hours only had 2 customers. I would revist to give a second chance on a different menu items but the cost for food I would way on side of just one guest not bring family
The guy who was working seemed like he'd rather be anywhere else and we felt like a burden trying to order or ask for things, like butter. The tri tip and ribs were good. The salad was disappointing, which sucks because its the only vegetable they have. The corn bread was just awful. Dense and way too moist and zero fluffiness. And they were stingy with their butter. the Stubborn soda flavors weren't good, i only took one sip of mine. The berry cobbler was more like pie, but it was pretty good. 100$ for 2 people. And they make you bus your own table. I would not go back there.
Dropped by for the first time. The place is quite loud as there are no acoustic materials to absorb sound. There are a number of seats inside but there are more seats outside. We got here for dinner, but not sure if thats why the meats we ordered seemed dry. As if they were sitting in a warmer for a while. The bbq sauces did help out a bit. The chicken, tri-tip, and pork ribs were okay. But the burnt ends and brisket were dry and chewy. Oddly the coleslaw was too. The fries seemed dry, but the outside did have a crispness to it. The mac cheese was okay, but didn't taste like cheese. Reminds me of powdered cheese. As for the atmosphere, we noticed that some of the tables were wobbly and some were even skewed to one side. Overall a 3 star place.

Um...no! Not for me. I've been to Food trucks that had better BBQ than Canyons Barbeque. While not all that common, there are definitely better BBQ spots in the Bay Area, Good size venue with plenty of outdoor seating. Your typical BBQ joint with a decent amount of seating inside including a few Bar seats. Everything is just OK. I'd avoid this place if you are craving goof BBQ, unfortunately NOTHING was good for us here. We had a big group too, birthday celebration outside, we took over 5 tables outside! Nobody raved about the food...in fact some folks went to neighboring venues and picked up some other eats... #MediocreBBQ: 2 Meat COMBO: ~ BRISKET - 3/5 The best thing here, but still not all that good compared to other places, doesn't fall apart or melt in your mouth. ~ TRI TIP - 2/5 Um...very mediocre. Tough and chewy, we struggled to cut it with the knife provided. At least the flavor was decent. SIDES: ~ Beans - 2.5/5 Nope. Nothing special. The sauce is OK, a bit of a warm mouthfeel. ~ Mac & Cheese - 2/5 Edible, that's about it. I can make a much better Mac & Cheese. I had better store bought Mac & Cheese! ~ Garlic Bread - 2/5 Umm....this was just toasted bread. Couldn't taste the Garlic and barely had any butter. At least it was toasted. PASS... Only reason I haven't given this Canyons Barbeque a lower rating was for the healthy beverage selection and the interaction with the staff. Beer Selection on tap and cans is very healthy and they also have a Craft Soda machine. I wouldn't say you're missing out if you didn't come here...

They have a funny way of treating regulars. I have been here plenty of times. I tried calling to place an order and they have a policy where if it's more than $100 you must pay with a credit card. I told him I would be there in about 20 to 30 minutes to pay with cash and I would pick up the food in the next 3 hours. They came up with a funny story. They only have seven racks of ribs and if I was buying that many I was cleaning them out(don't they sell ribs?) and they could not do that so they cannot help me. Really just making it difficult for the customer even though they look up your account through your phone and can see your previous history! With all that back and forth I decided to go somewhere else since they only have seven racks and this is all coming from the Manager.
