Opinions de Phil's Fish Market Castroville
Philz’s Fish Market is no longer at Moss Landing. It is now in Castroville CA and the food is still delicious as ever. The Cioppino is one of the best, if not the best dish, to eat here. A big thank you to Crystal at the cash register, she was friendly and helpful:
I came down to Castroville on my annual Artichoke run, and settled in on a full pallet of jumbo Artichokes! And...Man-O-Man I can hardly wait to get back to Napa, for the 4th annual Choke-O-Rama this weekend at Artichoke Joe's downtown. But....First things first...I need to stop at Phil's Fish Market & Eatery for some of their world famous Clam Chowder, and let me yell you...it is Amazing! 5 ☆☆☆☆☆ and well worth the stop!
Fresh seafood market on one side w/ a restaurant on the other side (different buildings). Order and pay as you walk in (no table service). Pick out a table inside or outside and grab a seat. There is a walk up bar for alcohol. We had a limited wait for food and it was delivered perfectly. Would love to go back
Really liked my experience here. The food was tasty. Our group of 4 had the blackened shrimp sandwich which was really good with crinkle cut fries. The soft shell crab sandwich also with fries. The oysters were good and so was the clam chowder. I am a fan of all chunkier chowder and that is the kind they had. Everything tasted so good.
The food, as always, is over the top (literally). Ordered a medium clam chowder for lunch, not sure how the waitress carried it to the table it was SO full! Crackers and fresh bread to go with. Delicious as always! New location is nice, however the lines weren't a mile long, then again, it was a weekday in middle of the day. Love Phil's!!!
I was surprised to learn they moved because they lost their lease. I liked the funky atmosphere at the old place. But the new place is more comfortable and less chaotic with the same excellent food and friendly staff. So when I'm in Moss Landing area I will still make the trip over to castroville
We love driving from the bay for the seafood here. It’s so fresh, and we love the cippiono, oysters, and especially the oyster shooter (with the Bloody Mary and shrimp being a great alternate too). We miss their old awesome location on the beach, but the food is well worth the drive. And yes they’ve had their bar open since mid 2025 despite what Google AI is saying about it being gone.
Always a hit when we go here. Cioppino is a hit here. The halibut and fries were flaky, flavorful wonders. Blue point oysters are great quality. They recently expanded next door for additional inside seating between the outdoor seating and now have a full deli to buy your fresh seafood at the counter like before at the old site. Only sad part i do miss is being able to walk to the beach that used to be right in the backyard of the old site. Otherwise, great food and great people.
What Phil's no longer has in views and vibe, it definitely makes up in food quality and convenience. We had the seafood cioppino bowl and a fried snapper sandwich, both of which were abundant and fresh and perfectly prepared. The cioppino had two large crab leg claws, numerous bay scallops, lots of cod chunks, several shrimp and calamari, and mussels and clams. The enormous snapper filet was very lightly breaded and sort of baked/fried perfectly flat and served on toasted light sourdough slices with fries and tartar sauce with lettuce tomato and red onions and pickle slices on the side. Good thing we skipped both dinner and breakfast before having lunch at Phil's Fish 😉
Oh my gosh, we were gifted by a friend with CIOPPINO IN A BUCKET. And holy mackerel, it was so good, so amazing and the best Cioppino I have ever had. The sauce was pleasant and slightly sweet. It really brought out the mussel and clam flavors and was so good. If we are ever in the area, we will definitely make it a point to stop into Phil’s fish market and eatery and get some Italian seafood. Fantastico!
I love this place. Instructions are a little unclear once you get to the front of the line… and the menu can be overwhelming. But I think they got the best ciopino. Everything else I’ve had there has been outstanding. The new location is nice, but I definitely enjoyed the previous location much more.
New location for 2 years! Its been a while since I was in the area. Food is still great, huge menu - honestly there is something for everyone. We had: Clam Chowder Fish & Chips Cioppino Fried Calamari Green/Dinner Salad Currently they are not serving any alcoholic beverages that's okay for us! Great service !
Very quick ordering process! Menu is on the eraser board. Hard to peruse the menu before forcing to decide what to order as people were waiting impatiently behind you. Dishes simply served with no fanfare : Tasty Ciopino , $31, comes with salad and 1 piece of garlic bread; soft shell crab sandwich served with French fries or coleslaw; and shrimp sandwich also served with the same selection of side dish. Tasty foods!!
Huge menu, featuring all of the fish choices you'd expect plus salads and several artichoke selections (of course). Unpretentious open dining area with a view only of the main street. Shrimp sandwich included a generous number of shrimp and was very tasty; artichoke was good but less amazing than would have been expected in the Artichoke Center of the World.
I miss their old location right by the beach, but this new location is not bad either! It has a spacious private parking lot in the back which can accommodate up to 20 cars. There are also ample free street parkings. As soon as you step inside, you'll be greeted with a nice smell of delicious seafood dishes. They have large menus posted right by the entrance so you can easily look at and debate on what to order while you wait in line. There are also pamphlet-style menus and regular laminated menus available if you prefer to have something in hands to scan through. After you order and pay, you'll receive a number to put on your table. Grab some water and utensils yourself and proceed to either indoor or outdoor seating areas of your choice. I love that the outdoor seating area is really spacious and nicely decorated with a cute Christmas tree for holiday spirit. I have my puppy with me thus opted for the outdoor area. Our dishes arrived quickly. For every main dish you order, they provide free side salads which are freshly made and quite tasty. We ordered Linguine and Clam and Fettuccine with Blackened Salmon for main dishes. The blackened salmon is super fresh and delicious with the right amount of flavors whereas the clams are sweet and refreshing. We devoured our meals with lightening speed. Another thing I love about this place is that their portion is generous. Despite the facts that we were super hangry and their food was tasty, we couldn't finish and had to have them to go. Overall, I enjoy this new location. I take off one star because there were so many flies flying around and hovering over our food while we were there. Hopefully they'll do something to address the fly problem.
We like to take our out of town guests here, but found out that they have moved into a new location. (Old location became an office building) A bit smaller and lost the water view outdoor seating area. The clam chowder has a bit too much potatoes in it. The fish and chips, and the fryers combo were done just right. Staffs are friendly but it is pretty much a self service kind of restaurant hence the 3 stars.
For better or worse, this location got a bigger space but it does not have the same feel like the old location. The setting between ordering food and drinks is weird and confusing. I noticed that they got lots and lots of items on the menu now, including Seafood Bouillabaisse. I don’t recall having such menu in the old location, we simply just ordered from the big board above the counter. And the menu was just one page, two the most, with one page dedicated to Cioppino. Anyway, We want Cioppino because that is what we remember about Phil. Not anymore. If I remember correctly, the Cioppino from the old location used to be, not as red, yellowish and flavorful. The Cioppino we got this time was red, very tomato-y and was not just alright. I wonder if they took out the saffron and fennel from the Cioppino sauce to make a new dish called Bouillabaisse. As for others, Raw oysters - fresh and good but raw oysters are usually good, as long as they’re fresh. Clam chowder - good but way too sweet for a savory soup. Fried calamari- it is not tentacles, it is calamari steak cut into pieces, flavor is not bad but over fried and dried, tasted more like a jerky. Very disappointed. Mediterranean pasta - yummy. The only dish that was good. Seafood pasta or Fruiti De Mare - probably the most disappointed Fruiti De Mare I have ever eaten. Desserts: Carrot cake - tasted like someone just dumped a bag of sugar, Costco size, into the batter and bake. Tiramisu- sugar level was perfect but bland. Need more coffee or espresso or something.
Not the same!!!! It was awkward. We walked up to the window and asked for menus, dont ask for menus. Look up at the wall for the menu. I did get a menu and as I was looking over one of the two menus as we got our food, the waitress snatched the menu I didn't have in my hand off the table. Yes I did want to order more than chowder. What was the attitude about and why? We ordered chowder bread bowls and honestly I wanted some/a main dish to share. Didn't seem to happen
The quality of food was below average. Yet, it's a popular spot in the area. I would try other places if you are looking for yummy food.
I was so looking forward to a wonderful experience but was disappointed. When we arrived the entrance was crowded and the lady at the register was hard to understand. We sat ourselves down and our wait wasn’t long but the lady that brought our food needs to be re-schooled on customer etiquette. The female was the oldest of the waitresses but she had a nasty demeanor. The clam chowder was a bit thick and I could taste the gritty texture of sand the child size fish and chips were a bit better. We will try this place again but not to soon.
Came here with the family of 5.. Service is okay.. nothin special, seems like there just here to collect their paycheck, no energy, no vibes.. Specifically my Fettucini Alfredo w/ blackened Salmon was (meh) 😒. For the amount it cost I was expecting something spectacular.. but definately wont ever order again.. the side of garlic bread was (meh) i make better garlic bread at home. My wife loved the scallop plate.. son loved his fryer combo, little one says his burger was okay, eventually only took a few small bites and didnt want no more, so i tried the burger myself and honestly I could have made a better burger at home.. the burger was tasteless, like they grabbed ground beef made a patty and cooked it🙄 ridiculous at least it was a fat one. Lastly, my daughter loved her chicken burger with fries.. Overall this place could have better drink selections not just from fountain. The salad that was included with my alfredo plate was a little stale and dry, seemed like it was from yesterday, which is not how salad is supposed to be.. but hey live and learn right.. hopefully this reaches people out there. Your better off going to Monterey for better quality and similar prices. Final total for a family of 5.. around $170.. again ridiculous..
I really wanted to like this place, but left feeling a bit disappointed. Prices keep going up, yet the quality just isn’t there. A lot of the dishes are mostly thick, greasy batter with barely any real seafood inside. It feels like you’re paying premium prices for something that tastes more like fast food. What’s especially frustrating is that, given how close we are to the ocean, you’d expect fresher, more affordable seafood. Instead, it feels overpriced and underwhelming. Not awful, but definitely not worth what they charge.
Phill's used to be in Moss Landing. They have always had the best sea food ever. They now are in Castroville, CA. The wife and I went there for lunch. We never made it in the door. Appetizers range from $18-$65. A cup of clam chowder $12, not a bowl. Average cost of main course $52. We are foodies and love to eat but if I need to pick between gas for both cars and a week's worth of fresh veggies or 1 meal here... We understand that prices will never go back to being reasonable, but price gouging people is not the way to go either.

Phil's Fish Market: The Catch of Castroville
When you talk about serious seafood in our neck of the woods, Phil's Fish Market in Castroville is always at the top of the list. It’s the kind of place folks happily drive from the Bay Area for, and once you taste their offerings, you’ll understand why. While the old beachside location holds a special place in many hearts, let me tell you, the culinary journey at their current spot is absolutely worth every mile. You can't talk about Phil's without talking about their legendary cioppino.
