Bombolo is a highly-rated Chapel Hill restaurant known for its creative and well-executed dishes, excellent cocktails, and attentive service. The menu changes frequently, offering unusual and memorable flavor combinations. Some found it pricey and the space small.
Tip: The menu changes daily and has unusual choices, so be prepared to try something new. Consider sitting at the bar for a great experience.
Fantastic Cantonese food in RTP! Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The crispy noodles with seafood, walnut shrimp, and steamed fish were standouts. Great service, generous portions, and everything tasted authentic.
Probably the best sesame chicken in the RTP area. The chicken actually tastes like real chicken, not just batter. The sauce is balanced, slightly sweet, and not overly heavy on the ketchup flavor like many other places. I’ve been eating Chinese food around here for years, and Hunam consistently gets it right. Apologies for barging into the kitchen on Christmas Day to snap this photo, and a big thank you to Nelson for being so kind and letting me take it.
High value, high quality Cantonese-style food. Best you can find in the RTP area!
Five stars all the way for what it is: an authentically simple, good quality, great priced, local Chinese restaurant. Takeout is great but we dined in and I actually loved the traditional simplicity of the experience. Nothing flashy, traditional fried wontons complementary to start, quality basic dishes in a simple and muted atmosphere, at a great price. They built out the back room a little bit fancier for parties or meetings. Forgot to take pictures of the dishes! My daughter and I shared chicken lettuce wraps and chicken and broccoli as a dish. The hoisin sauce and chicken lettuce wraps was fantastic (get extra hoisin bc it's awesome), and although the chicken and broccoli looked insanely simple when it came out it actually tasted great and is a new favorite for a healthy but tasty meal.
Love the eggplant chicken salty fish clay pot. Other dishes were good too. The service was excellent.
First time eating food from here. Did takeout. The fried squid was amazing and the sweet and sour fish excellent. My lemon chicken was okay, had better ones overseas and in Raleigh. But it does get the job done. The fried rice was also tasty and they put a good amount of sauces in bowls which is awesome. Overall would recommend eating from here
We are a group of five Chinese adults visited this restaurant for lunch. We ordered 4 food : chrysanthemum crispy fish 糖醋魚,water boiled chilly beef水煮牛肉,chestnut shrimp 合桃蝦,vegetable with Chinese dry sausage 韮菜臘腸. The food are excellent, the ingredients are fresh. I would rank it the top Chinese restaurant in Durham and Chapel Hill. I recommend it if you want to have Chinese food in these regions.
The food here is nice, the boss is handsome and the service is great. It also has karaoke here. Highly recommend this place.
The shrimp with vegetables was delicious. It all tasted very fresh. The egg roll was very small. About half the size of any I have had. It was good though!
Best chicken fried rice in a long time DELICIOUS perfectly seasoned cooked by a Chinese chef. I will definitely recommend this restaurant. Great ambiance clean great staff. Laoson the owner was great.
Incredible food. Everything tastes fresh and flavorful. Incredible service. I will definitely be back!
This is the first time I have ate at this place since the late eighty's and early nineties with my Mother. She loved the food here and the owners. Since I moved back here 9 years ago I have not gone back. What a huge mistake on my part. Yes the place is a little bit old and dated, so is the interior decor, but its as old is the building(1984) But everything was clean and it worked, ve friendly and knowledgeable staff. So please don't judge the place by it looks outside and in...it will definitely be your loss. The service was outstanding and the food was incredible. Plus good portions sizes for the money. One thing I got was the special house fried rice. Yes it's a very common dish. But they elevated it to something absolutely delicious, juicy vegetables ,tender meat and shrimp, flavored great, and the rice cooked perfectly. If you enjoy great Asian food and great service for fair price. Check it out, and you decide. Thank you Hunam for a great experience. You have made a new customer.😁🙌👍
Great good. You also get a LOT, so its worth the price. My family got: lemon chicken, orange beef, honey walnut shrimp. All tasted great and cooked well. The appetizers we had were fried dumplings and crab ragoons. They were good, but not great. All in all, I highly recommend and will be coming back to try even more dishes.
General tso and it was excellent sauce was right on point the portion size was more than enough for two people. For the money the value is great. Love the menue options they have many options some I probably would not try lol.
I order takeout often and almost every visit would rate it a 5. The food is fresh and well-prepared. The fried rice has that great smoky wok flavor, a benchmark for me in Chinese food. I have taken numerous other people there, too, and it never fails to impress. A friend who has been going there for over 25 years used to deliver their ingredients and says the owner was always very particular. That shows in the final product still today(same owner.) One huge disappointment to be wary of: fried rice included with the combo meals was left on my plate the one time I ordered a combo meal.It was definitely a different product.
Love this place. Really creative menu and well executed. Excellent cocktails and wine selection as well. Service is good. Barbecue shrimp is a fave and the pastas are wonderful.
What a charming restaurant, with a thoughtful and well executed menu and very attentive service. Service : We noted a few food sensitivities / allergies at the start, and our server was proactive in assisting us. Food : The spicy rigatoni (yes sounds simple) was phenomenal, as were the Brussel sprouts. The menu was ambitious, with French, Italian, Thai influences and they were very well executed. Unfortunately, we were so full, we didn’t have a chance to try dessert. Ambiance : quaint little place, with lots of interesting decor - transports you away. Thank you for a memorable evening!
We loved our dinner at Bombolo. The menu changes daily and always has unusual choices-- so we had to try the wild boar and rabbit dishes. The pate appetizer was terrific, only wish more bread came with it. The bbq shrimp was good. My husband loved the brussels sprouts and the chocolate Budino but I thought the salt levels were too high on both. The fresh pasta dishes were outstanding as was the service. Portion sizes are not too big so 3 courses are feasible, and the prix fixe option made that more affordable.
WOW! as a foodie and talented home cook it has been a long time since I was blow away by a restaurant, but a chance stop in for the Plumb Rabbit Saturday wine tasting and sandwich lunch did just that. We'll be coming back again to try dinners here as well. This is a MUST try restaurant in the triangle! My few poorly taken pictures don't do it justice. We ended up buying wine bottles too.
My friend from Canada came to visit me and we decided to go to Bombolo because of good reviews and an interesting looking old menu. We walked in and were greeted by friendly staff. Almost everything on the menu looked fantastic so we had a tough time deciding but our waiter helped us out a couple times. Everything we ordered was fantastic in taste and presentation. One highlight would be the Nola bbq shrimp which my friend has called me from Canada to say he misses it. I can’t wait to go back!
Review from 2025 Back and this place is still wonderful Menu is completely different This time sat inside by the bar, Layal was wonderful and attentive and offered a delicious Lebanese arak. my favorite this time is the fried carbonara bites and the Caesar salad. Every dish had an extra noche of flavor making it very unique. The inside is also beautiful and full with European art. If you haven't yet, give this place a go. Review from 2023 The shrimps r the bomb. get them. get two of them. ;) had the stuffed shishito peppers which were delicious and the lobster pot equally delicious. sat outside, cute area however had a bit of cob webs and service was a lil slower than inside potentially. parking available upfront
I’ve lived in Chapel hill most of my life and returned for a short visit. I was skeptical when someone suggest a restaurant I hadn’t heard of there as the town, like so many others has become a vast and ever expanding wasteland of chains and bland suburban facades of “fine dining”. All staying in the shallow end of food, where things are safe, towing the lines of what’s accepted and common as not to rock the boat filled with students who know no better and retired boomers who fear change. Upon walking in, I felt like I had entered another time or realm. The staff was knowledgeable about the menu. Clearly happy to be there and refreshingly human. The food itself was innovative. Risk taking, delicious and made with attention and care at every step. Thoughtful and flavorful dishes. I couldn’t help but continue to order long after I was full. The menu was less like an attack on the senses or an attempt to overwhelm with over the top additions and more like an impenetrable castle of creativity and taste, it’s impossible to find something to dislike, to find a weak point in the structure and break down its walls made with purpose and intent. To say I left satisfied is an under statement. To say I’m suggesting you eat here is less than honest. I’m demanding you, if you care about your spirit, if you love food and if you believe in the restorative and inspiring effects a great meal can have you MUST eat here.
This is our second visit to Bombolo, the first since they were recognized by The James Beard Foundation. I am happy to be able to say that they still maintained the same quality of food, service, and ambiance they had prior to the recognition! Came as a table of four as they opened. Parking was a little easier to get this time around because we were earlier than the normal dinner crowd (5PM). There were a few standouts from the dinner: Our waitress was excellent! She was on top of everything, friendly, and managed our requests perfectly! The Chanterelle and Morel Fricassee had a wonderful presentation, and the person who ordered it recommended it highly. The Cinghiale Pappardelle was a respectable portion and delivered on our recent memories of Tuscany. I had the fried chicken plate, which was delicious! The meat was succulent and the fry coating was well seasoned. The accompanying biscuit and Mac 'n Cheese was also delicious. If it sounds like a lot of food it was! This is something one could split or take home. We ordered a white chocolate cardamom and ginger cheesecake and the Bombolo. The cheesecake's flavors were well balanced. The cardamom did not overpower. The Bombolo was our favorite, however. I recommend anyone visit if they're in the area. It's worth the trip!
From the outside, it's a small store front in a small plaza but that's why they call 'em hidden gems. One page menus make me apprehensive. But after talking with our waiter, there were several entries I wanted to try. Decided on the duck & wild boar pappardelle. Not sure if that the correct pasta but it was flat, wide, & house-made. Wife had the halibut, upon the chef's recommendation the sauce was switched because of an allergy issue with the original one. We tried some of the small plates as well. Every interaction with the staff was top-notch. From the phone call with the hostess, the greeting from our waiter, to actually meeting Chef Garrett, we had an amazing experience. One for your foodie bucket list.
Bombolo was recently named “North Carolina’s Restaurant of the Year”, but after dining there I’d say that “North America’s Restaurant of the Year” is a more apt title! I was deeply depressed when I learned Big Belly Que (my fave restaurant as a UNC undergrad) had closed after the pandemic, but knew I had to make a trip back when I learned Chefs Garret and Eleanor were opening their own spot. These chefs are mad talented, and my meal at Bombolo was well worth the redeye from California! Everything from the service to the eccentric decor (don’t miss a trip to the bathroom while you’re there) was spectacular! We ordered enough food to feed a small village and every single bite we had was spectacular. Some of our favorites were the Uni pasta, the octopus, the Thai halibut dish (I forget the name), the Nashville hot soft shell crab, and a secret off menu bao bun that we strongly recommend makes it to the menu soon! ;) every dish was so unique and flavor packed, and they change their menu often! I am already trying to figure out when I can make it back to NC. :) This place is not to be missed during your next trip to the NC Triangle, and if you live here and haven’t been to Bombolo yet - GO! I promise you’ll become a regular!
Bombolo is the 2023 NC Restaurant of the Year by Eater Carolinas, tucked in a quaint shopping center in Chapel Hill! We shared a delicious four-course meal that included chicken oysters, crab and lion’s mane mushroom tagliolini, and a wagyu rendang, and we ate to our heart’s content! We would love to return to try more innovative and delicious dishes from Bombolo’s menu!
We definitely enjoyed the atmosphere in Bombolo - interesting decor, old classics for music, and a cozy vibe. The food was pretty dang good, with our favorite being the bolognese or the “girthy” andouille sausage! Our server was nice but not super knowledgeable about the menu, and the tables were mildly cramped but to be fair it’s a small space. 10/10 would recommend popping by Flyleaf Books and then having dinner here for a fun date night!
Seriously amazing place that I honestly did not know was here!!! Our waiter was SUPER nice and patient with our party of 5 crazy ladies and the food was absolutely delicious!!! Don't sleep on the brussel sprouts..it was so good we put in another order!!! I also had the Halibut Khao Soi and it was DELICIOUS. And of course we had to end our night with some desserts and our waiter actually brought out the candle as well because we told him we were "celebrating life" 😂 Overall, amazing place. Would absolutely go back!
Great little place in Chapel Hill!! Menu has many interesting and creative dishes. Sat at the bar with a friend, we tried many dishes. For starters, Lamb Belly, Crispy Pig Ears, and Tonno Tonno. Course Two: Tortellini & Summer Truffles and Rabbit Something Pasta. So good!! Course Three: Octopus and Lobster Pot.....we enjoyed them all! Menu is a little on the rich side but I Love that so...:) Service at the bar was attentive and friendly. We will be back!
A small and quaint setting with delicious food! The meat balls and tinned fish for appetizers were outstanding. The lobster and mahi-mahi ravioli should include a slice-or-two of bread to capture the tasty sauce. The octopus dish was flavorful and cooked perfectly. Courteous staff and prompt service. Parking on premises. Indoors and outdoors seating. Reservations advised. Highly recommended
The spring roll was amazing and crispy, the house fried rice had very little flavor, but the cashew chicken was pretty tasty. The food was hot when I received it and I was pleasantly surprised by the lunch specials.
A really solid Chinese restaurant. The menu is fairly tight, not overbloated, which can be a pro or a con depending how you like it. There is a mix of classic Chinese-American dishes like sesame chicken, as well as some more traditional Chinese dishes like some Szechuan hot pots (we got the eggplant hotpot, very tasty), and shrimp walnut. You won't find any of the more adventurous Chinese dishes like intestines, lotus root, lamb, etc. Overall however, we enjoyed the food. The salt and pepper fried squid in particular was a treat.
I came early on a Saturday evening and sat at the bar to experience the 2023 North Carolina restaurant of the year. Joy, a law student, was the bartender and my server. She was outstanding, and the wait staff and hostess deferred to her throughout the night. I started with the barbecue shrimp. My plate arrived with four shrimp in a rich sauce with bread. Although a little salty, it was quite good. I was mildly put off that request for additional bread elicited additional charge. It was worth it though as I soaked up all the rest of the sauce waiting for my next course. I chose the octopus as my main course. This plate was robust with plenty of octopus potatoes and sauce. Again, the sauce was quite rich and enjoyable. I chose the bombolo for my dessert. I wish I had known there was so much orange flavoring in it which was a little overwhelming when what I really wanted was chocolate and hazelnut. It was a miss to not include that in the menu description. I gave the atmosphere a 4 because the restaurant seems to draw a clientele with an average age of 70, and the Willie Nelson old timey country music just didn't seem to fit with the rest of the vibe. I would certainly return.
Food is okay, but not worth its price. Several of us had unhappy stomachs in the night after dining. The restaurant is very small, and it doesn't feel like you're in a fine dining establishment. No bread.
The food is good with a few suggestions for consideration. We tried their shrimp and two pasta plates. Our top favorite was the pasta with bass. The shrimp was good, but because they serve a few pieces of entire shrimps, most of it isn't edible. I think they should just put the edible pieces of the shrimp on the plate. The dessert was fantastic. We had the Bombolo and the fig desserts, and both were excellent. The staff are amazing and very attentive. The prices are a bit too much for the quality and the quantity of the food served. The atmosphere is okay, but the place is a bit too dark and overcrowded with mostly kitsch artwork hanging on the walls.
It hurts me to have to leave such a low rating for this restaurant. It was so good but now it’s really hit or miss for many things. The spring rolls and pork egg rolls are delicious and the soups are good. I’ve had mixed results with entrees, once I ordered shrimp egg Fu yung and it was amazing the next time it had frozen fried shrimp instead of fresh. Now it seems they are double frying things like crab Rangoon which makes them extremely oily and overcooks the filling. I tried two orders with the same result. I just can’t recommend this restaurant.
I have dined here for years and use to enjoy their food for lunch on a weekly basis, but this will be my last time. I normally dont leave reviews, but I feel the need to do so to hopefully prevent someone from wasting their hard earned money and expecting a descent meal and not receiving one. This place has gone downhill in the past few months. No meat in the one Noodle I got in my Wonton Soup(See Pic below). I have called them back in the past to inquire about what happened to the quality of the Wonton Soup, and she said they would put more noodles and meat next time. They didn't. Nothing Changed.I have ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken before but started being hardly no chicken and all dough, so I started ordering the House LO Mein and was very disappointed again. I keep giving them a chance, thinking maybe it's just an isolated instance, but the last 4 times have been very disappointing. I dont know what has changed for them, but I hope they get it fixed.I will be taking my business elsewhere. So I recommend that you don't waste your time or money either!
This was their general tso chicken. It is not like any i have ever had before and also not good at all. I normally love spicy but this was unbearably hot. It was very orange to be general tso. We even called to make sure we had the right plates and the man said it was correct. Its not a place i will ever return.
