Delicious sandwiches just the way I like em with quality, local ingredients. Tru has a very friendly staff and a neat, lounge-like environment! Very unique place for Chapel Hill.
Tasty beer, very nice servers. I don't love the ordering system, and the sandwiches can be amazing but it isn't consistent, so I just go for the beer, service and outdoor seating
One of my favorite lunch spots in Chapel Hill, Tru always has a quiet, relaxed atmosphere that makes it perfect for catching up one-on-one with a friend. Just order a build-your-own sandwhich or salad at their digital ordering koisks, pay the attendent, then grab a number and sit down while the staff make and deliver your order. (Don't forget to pick up your drinks and chips seperately from the counter though! The infused water is great and free.) The variety of comfortable outdoor seating and location away from the noise of Franklin Street also makes Tru one of the most pleasant places to eat outdoors. Definitely a recommended stop for visitors or residents.
We eat and relax here often. Mellow energy and peaceful surroundings complement excellent, reasonably priced food. We were surprised on our second visit when the manager(?) discovered our meal had been overlooked and she more than made it right before we even realized anything was amiss.
Best combination of environment, staff, food, and beer in town (by far). Great seating options both indoors and outdoors. Fresh ingredients for 100% custom salads, sandwiches, and wraps. Fantastically curated West coast beer selection.
Great design it yourself sandwiches. Not for those who can't build a sandwich, but the ingredients were fresh and delicious. Fun rooftop patio seating makes it a perfect place to go when it's nice outside.
My favorite bar in chapel hill. They have an amazing atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. Some of the best tequila deals you can get anywhere and their sandwiches are superb.
Great food, awesome atmosphere, pet friendly attitude is a huge plus. They have free wifi and it can be a great spot to go study during the day. It's also nice that you create your food a la carte, great if you're balling on a budget!
The best sandwiches with great choice of ingredients. You could put in anything and it always ends up tasting good. Must try in chapel hill, the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere as well.
Hey my brother and wife introduced TRU to us over 2 years ago and we love it. Typically we only go for drinks. A very unique environment. Love the student demographic, it's fun, relaxed and serene place to spend time with your favorite people!!!
So cute! Lauren served us and she was so great! Amazing selection of food and wine. Will definitely be coming back!
This place serves build your own salads and sandwiches and they’re made really well. Always have had a good experience. Tons of outdoor seating and great spaces inside too. They have specials every day of the week.
Tru is a great hangout spot to grab a bite and a drink. They have great drink specials and their sandwiches are delicious. The atmosphere is very relaxed and they've always got great music playing.
Great wine bar. The main food option is to build your own salad or sandwich so I recommend checking the menu before you go. Drinks are great and bartenders are very nice, friendly, and helpful.
Huge fan of heavily toasting the bread! My mouth becomes a casualty only for the next week or so. Atmosphere is so lovely to chat with friends.
Only reason I’m surviving college (lol). Delicious sandwiches, quality ingredients for a decent price, and convenient location. Their customization is amazing and pickup is efficient. All the employees seem friendly. Normally don’t leave reviews but YOU’RE THE BEST TRU!!!
Best place to have a laid back meal with your friends. Your order is completely customizable and is done online so you don’t have to call anyone over or go to the bar for a drink. Sandwiches are always very solid. You can just sit wherever as soon as you walk in. Staff is always extremely nice!
Fantastic little spot in Chapel Hill without the usual college crowd. TRU Deli is a great place for a quiet drink with an impressive wine list, great beer selection, and quality spirits. It offers a "build your own sandwich" menu with a good selection and reasonable price. The staff is polite and happy to recommend a good beverage without being overbearing. Seating is available inside or on one of two patios making it a great spot to enjoy the evening. Cody, the owners lab, is more than happy to show his appreciation to customers outside and welcomes belly rubs. Great concept offers a welcoming and different experience from the usual rush for being close to campus. Can't recommend it enough!
TRU has a number of attributes that make it a regular part of my restaurant/cafe/bar rotation. They have great sandwiches and salads for lunch, a chill vibe for a glass of wine while getting some work done, and a fantastic patio for a beer while out on a walk with my dog (TRU is pet friendly). The crowd here is eclectic and the staff is always great. The only cautions I will give to those who’ve not been here before are as follows: (1) The ordering system takes a little getting used to. There are no preset items to order by a name or number like at a fast-food place. Every item is ordered a la carte, so don’t forget to add toppings to your sandwich or salad. (2) At very busy times, it can be a little understaffed. Be patient and remember that the kitchen for this place also produces food for folks on campus, so the wait can be kinda long. Consequently, I would not recommend this place for a “quick bite” if time is critical.
As someone who was on a brief trip to the UNC area, I have to say I really enjoyed TRU's sandwiches and ambience. It's a great looking place with nice architecture and unique design. The food was also very enjoyable and I was able to get a very well packed sandwich with a lot of meat and additional toppings for a good price. Overall, this is a great place to visit for a quick bite or to spend a lunch with friends.
Wonderful wine bar with make your own salads and sandwiches. This is one of my favorite spots in Chapel Hill. They offer wine, craft beers on tap, and cocktails. Check for daily specials. Fridays are $4 bottles of wine and one other day if the week is $5 cocktails. The cocktails are always delicious and a good size. Highly recommended, the management and staff are great as well!
Decently sized and great tasting salad for an affordable price
Tru is easily my favorite place in Chapel Hill. It has a very cozy, laid back atmosphere, making it the perfect place to catch up with friends. I do wish the ordering system wasn’t completely virtual. The staff have always been incredibly friendly and helpful.
I love the atmosphere, food and staff! Food is very tasty and relatively inexpensive for bar food. The salads are some of the cheapest and huge! Staff is friendly an engaging and they had good deals on wine when I was there. Definitely adding this place to my favorites.
Tru is a college deli/bar right off Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. They have seating indoors and outdoors, and there are always students sitting with laptops open. It is very casual but the food and drinks are very good!
This is a great place for a meal in the day time and a laid back bar at night. The food is build your own on an ipad, so it can be as expensive or cheap as you want depending on how much you add on (ex. Ham Sandwich vs. Sandwich with double bacon, double tomato, lettuce, avocado and you get the point). Overall, the food it good, the staff are nice, and the environment is very comfortable.
They’ve updated their ordering system and it’s much much better now. We love the chill, cozy vibes and great food. Great place to meet people for drinks after work.
TRU has a distinctly Chapel Hill vibe - easygoing yet classy, and the menu is customizable and delicious. The service has always been terrific, and the daily deals + the $5 cocktail Thursdays make TRU a good decision any day of the week. Definitely worth checking off the Chapel Hill restaurant bucket list.
I met some friends upstairs at Tru for drinks after a long day, and I loved the atmosphere. Relaxing in comfortable furniture outside and starting the evening with a welcoming (and handsome) bartender was lovely. Bustling without being noisy, and great wine. What's not to love?
We were in CH for a football game and lunch here on Sunday. This places checks all of the boxes. Great atmosphere, great food, great staff. Most of all the owner is awesome. He is hardworking and he really cares. I cannot wait to dine and hang out here again
Great spot for a nice sandwich and some cocktails
TRU is one of my favorite spots in Chapel Hill. It offers a wonderful overall experience with delightful staff, a welcoming atmosphere to all, and delicious food and drinks at an affordable price. I'm always impressed at how TRU can keep its prices low with such fresh ingredients. TRU has a laid back and beautiful atmosphere that is always inviting and accessible to everyone, whether inside at the nice wood carved tables or outside on the open patio. It's not intimidating like other wine bars can be and offers food and drinks at price points more accessible than other restaurants in the area. To call TRU classist is simply laughable, given how they've made such an effort to keep their prices low when others in the area have not. And I think we can all agree that ordering online is not some challenging novel experience -- it's 2022, y'all. We've been doing this for years across so many aspects of our lives and it's become a convenient system for most. I love going to TRU and always have a great experience here, whether food, drinks, or both. With a great atmosphere, affordable food and drink, and inviting staff, I know I'll keep coming back.
I actually liked ordering via my phone because I didn’t have to talk to anyone and could easily customize my order. Nice, big tables, pretty interior, and good sandwiches. Nothing wrong with this place.
best sandwich place in chapel Hill so far. my favorite is to get no meat (it s expensive anyway) and to get lots of vegetables (many options). $9 or less gets you a delicious lunch. in the evenings, it is also a great place to get a beer or a cocktail.
Tru is one of my favorite spots in Chapel Hill. Great food-so many options, always a great beer selection, and really great prices. I always take people here when they come visit. Best spot for some working on a weekday afternoon or a relaxing weekend evening. Ordering is all online which is super convenient. Truly the best spot in town.
Absolutely love this place. The drink selection is generous but not too convoluted; both wines and cocktails are of superb quality. The sandwiches and salads are all delicious, especially as they are made to order with the ingredients and styling of your choosing. The atmosphere is very open and accepting to people from all walks of life. I’ve heard TRU referred as the “LGBT bar” of UNC. Completely recommended!
One of my favorite lunc spots in chapel hill! Delicious sandwiches and salads, the pizzas are a new addition. Everything is build your own which I love - wish they could take Apple Pay tho (they only allow online order but if you want your food to go and a drink there you have to do 2 separate orders). Chocolate chip cookie is underrated from TRU (I am a pastry snob this is one of the only cookies I will buy) I am all for atmospheric lighting, but it's a bit dark even for me. Instead of moody it's just hard to see but outside is better. I wish they put the cushions on the large outdoor chairs bc the picnic tables upstairs fill up quick! I don't love the char from a woofired pizza and the ones I've tried from here have a fair amount of that.
Service here was incredible-I had the best server named Josh, he was so accommodating and kind. Great food with phenomenal service! Cant wait to go back
When a friend of mine invited me out to grab bespoke sandwiches off Franklin, I had no idea what to expect. I never would have guessed that what awaited was a cozy nook with fast service and a great atmosphere. Tru is the perfect meet-up spot, with tons of seating options, low-lighting, and a comfortable feeling I've found in few places in the triangle. You order off of your phone, and the staff delivers you a delicious sandwich in under ten minutes. And when I say delicious, I mean it. I got a vegetable-filled sandwich layered with pesto and pepperjack cheese, all toasted to perfection. It's the kind of no-fuss meal that brings back the sandwiches my mom would make after a full day playing outside. The simplicity is part of what makes it so delicious, and so worthwhile. If you are looking for a quick bite, a good sandwich, or just a great place to meet up with friends, you can't go wrong with Tru.
TRU is a great place to stop for lunch! The outdoor is beautiful and lovely to sit in during spring. The sandwiches/salads are fresh and pretty quick to arrive. I wish there was a better wine selection for being a wine bar, but it was okay. They are not open super late. It seems like a great place to come to work in the afternoon with a laptop.
I was super impressed with this place! I read the reviews before going, and my expectations were: good food, good service, but annoying and cumbersome online ordering. Honestly, I didn’t find the online ordering to be as bad as many have expressed. Yeah, it would be nice to start a tab, as I had to order each round of drinks separately. However, the food was delish, the service was quick and friendly, and it was truly very easy to order online. This is going to become one of our favorite go-to spots!
The place was very nice. The meal with wine was pricey but it was worth it, the roast beef was excellent and wow, the selection of sauces was amazing. I randomly put random assortments of things and it tasted very good, compliments to the kitchen over me concocting some strange sandwich combo. I’m not sure if it would be a regular occurrence since the price was steep and I come to believe that Covid has bumped the prices compared to last year but that holds true to several places on franklin. Overall it was an excellent meal and enough so to justify the price, but don’t come in expecting a bargain of any kind.
TRU Deli is my favorite spot in Chapel Hill. They have yummy sandwiches, wraps, salads, as well as a full bar. As well as being delicious and healthy, all of their food and drinks are reasonably priced, which is rare in the area. The facilities are always clean, staff friendly, with various seating inside, outside, or on their beautiful roof. This is a great spot for lunch, to study, or casual drinks. They have a more bar like vibe after about 10pm, when they stop serving food. My personal favorite part though is they are dog-friendly both in and outside!
Tru has the best sandwiches in Chapel Hill, in my opinion. Their options for toppings are extensive, yet even piled high, their sandwiches are made cleanly and with care. They also have a great wine menu and good beer on tap. The upstairs balcony area is also a great spot for a cozy bite or drink. Truly one of my favorite places!
Chill vibe/ambiance with nice furniture, especially for a sandwich shop. Ordered several sandwiches with chips. All were tasty & quality, though portions could be larger given their prices. Would go back!
Great, healthy build your own sandwiches and salads. I love the upstairs outdoor seating and couches inside and out. Friendly place. Changes to a wine bar in the evenings. Some day I'll come for the wine :)
Awesome place for a bottle of wine with your friends! Very social table setting, as well as you have the chance to retreat to the back. Friendly enough staff, however not all of them knows a lot about the wines. Can get quite busy!
Great place for a quick drink or two after work. Go for the specials! Especially margarita day; they are delicious. Food is lackluster, but that's not what I go for. The ambiance and seating is great. Excellent place on a warm evening to sit outside.
My food was awesome. The reason for the four-star is they don’t take cash, Venmo, or PayPal so if you don’t have a credit card with you, there is no way to order. Also, as a vegetarian, there was no protein option such as egg salad or hummus.
Still my favorite lunch spot in Chapel Hill, and my favorite salad anywhere. The menu is a little more limited now, and I really don't like the system of ordering on your own phone. Bring back the iPad ordering! But it's worth the hassle. Add extra avocado to anything for $.25 - a steal.
Great environment to sit around talk for a long time. Food service is a bit slow but worth it! The food is delicious and all the ingredients are fresh and good. The upper patio is a great place to work if it's nice out also.
The food is excellent! $5 cocktails on Thursdays! I’ve had a couple of mixups with my to-go sandwiches but the food is affordable and it’s a cute place to hang out with friends or to go to at night! Quick service!
Great place to grab a drink and just relax. Very chill vibe, can stay as long as you'd like. Outdoor seating is great and inside is cozy and comforting. You'll find some low-key cocktails, wine, and some beer, create-your-own salads and sandwiches, and not much else. A few snack-type foods but not really for small plates to share or anything. Lacks variety but makes up for it in atmosphere.
I love this place, I eat here all the time and occasionally host happy hours here. The food and drinks are all reasonably priced and the staff are fantastic. It's getting 4 stars instead of 5 because of one huge problem: The website is awful. Please 🙏 please change it. Allow people to pay for drinks at the bar! Hire someone to make a quality website that works on phones. Hell, use chatgpt to help code a better website! Use squarespace! Anything!!! It's truly always a frustrating experience using the website! EVERYONE HATES IT! NO EXCEPTIONS! EVERYONE! Please. I beg you. Change the website. Other than that, it's a great place.
A bit expensive for sandwiches, but they're great. Excellent atmosphere, ample seating, and right off Franklin Street. You normally order on iPads, but be prepared to wait if there's technical difficulties (there are paper backups). But other than that, ordering is simple and adheres to the recent trend of ultimate customization--with breads, meats, cheeses, veggies, condiments, and sides. While it's not the most expansive menu, what they do, they do very well--and the customization ensures that you'll be able to get something you want. So go there between classes, and enjoy. If you're in Durham like me, I'm not sure it's worth the drive, but if you've got some other reason to go to Chapel Hill, definitely hit it up.
I really want to give this place 5 stars, but can't justify it. The food and atmosphere are great. You order your customized sandwich on an iPad and it magically appears in front of you minutes later. My ONLY issue is that they were completely out of turkey and ham on TWO separate visits.
Good lunch spot, somewhat limited selection. Order through app only, but cute place and decor inside. And my turkey sandwich was very good.
Lovely place to have a quick bite. The only drawback is that when they are busy staff becomes clearly overwhelmed and in result the quick bite becomes rather lengthy bite! But perhaps I’m complaining too much. Times are tough. Economy is not what it used to be, so certainly they do their best. With this reservation food quality and drinks selection are both wonderful.
whoever is making the sandwiches today (at 8pm) has made the best sandwich i’ve ever had here, excellent excellent
Food was exceptionally great. Turkey on toasted sour dough. Mixed drinks subpar. Service lacking friendless to new patrons. Food is delivered to you and your done. No more correspondence. Atmosphere is listening to "valley girls" complain about if tonight is going to be busy. When one of the girls leaves the group to help a patron the others talk about them. This happens each time a different girl leaves the group conversation.
Cozy, warm atmosphere with sofas and warm lighting. Nice seating and tasty sandwiches. Biggest problem was ordering— when inputting credit card information, you can’t see your card information while typing and on some devices you can’t place the order and the website won’t tell you why you can’t place an order. It was frustrating and I had to use a friend’s phone to order. P.S. the chocolate chip cookies are very hard.
Tasty food for those on tight budgets. Great outdoor seating when the weather is nice. The service is very inconsistent, and they seem to have supply chain issues (they are nearly always out of something). Fortunately the employees are generally warm and friendly.
Really like this place, but there are not really any vegetarian options. I wish their were plant proteins like tempeh, tofu, beyond meat, tofurkey etc. Even mozzarella would be nice so you could make a caprese sandwich. Love the cocktails though and staff is great.
I really want to love this place--it's adorable, and the outdoor seating is so fun for relaxing with friends after work. However, my last few visits have been marred by weird issues. I have been charged for ingredients that were not available (like, if you are out of avocados, ask me if I'd like to take them off my order rather than silently charging me for them anyway), and the service can be very slow, even just to get a glass of wine, when they are understaffed during peak hours.
Came with a group of friends and for the majority of us, it was our first time there. The sandwiches themselves were nice, for deli sandwiches (when you've had one, you've almost had them all). The ordering method (using a store iPad or going online to their store website) was kind of confusing at first, but can be adapted to easily. There was much to be desired of the service, the restaurant was out of ham (a deli restaurant out of ham?? Really??), the sandwiches were slow to be made and come out and most of us had to wait upwards of 45 minutes to get our sandwiches (it was not a busy night by any means). The restaurant evidently doesn't carry much cash, as they were advising customers to either pay with a card or close to exact change- something that was a bit unsettling, that a restaurant was reluctant to make change as a business. That's unacceptable to me, but I usually pay with a card anyway (others in my group were paying with cash and were alarmed by their reluctance as well). The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice and the most redeeming (but not enough) quality was their selection of music, which was nice. Overall, I'd recommend coming to TRU only once in a while, and make sure you have plenty of time if you do.
Beautiful place to have a quiet dinner. The staff was amazing and supportive. To the owners/management: The point of sale scheme ya'll have going on is something else. The menu changes based on how busy the kitchen and bar are, items just disappear. This is a sandwich shop at a bar guys. As an engineer I can appreciate automating inefficient processes, I was overjoyed the first time a server came to my table with a handheld p.o.s. system. A QR code to get the menu? I can deal with that. What you have going on here should change. You have great staff, a gorgeous space, an excellent location, sandwiches, and nice drinks. But you've sullied it with an inane ordering system and absentee management. Should be an easy fix! Innovation always gets push back, at a minimum if you're going to push boundaries have a manager on the schedule during weekends to smooth over the situation.
Pretty good food/wine, unfortunately terrible service. Online system is almost always down. Sandwich orders are a constant wild card, they often mess them up. Long wait times highly possible. I always ask the staff downstairs if they have my order in the system. With that said, the seating is lovely and the food is usually nice.
I’ve been to tru a few times and usually have a decent experience (with the exception of mixed drinks being way too strong most of the time). However me and a group of 7 others came in from 8-10 on October 3rd, and found they were not serving any cocktails except margaritas, and after waiting 45 minutes the one of the two who ordered margs got a completely different drink for no reason. Then, after waiting another hour, another friend asked about his drink and was informed that they had run out of the beer he ordered but the staff had not told him. Isn't that stealing? The table was also dirty the entire time and a staff member cleaned it after dishes sat for two hours. It was busy at first so of course we understood, but two hours is not a great look.
The service is very relaxed and all orders are done via their website, which at the time of this writing, was a nightmare and terrible. However, after only several attempts, we were all able to submit our orders. We were not surprised to learn later, that some of our orders did not come out and we had to re-ordered them; so, bring your patience with you. And no, they do NOT have their own phone application and no, the service people will not take your order.
Staff is friendly which is why I gave it a 2 star. Payment system made me change my phone settings out of dark mode. Because without doing this I couldn’t see what I was typing in. Everything was black. After changing my settings then it wouldn’t accept my card. After re-entering my information 3 times the option to submit payment finally showed up. My friends had to reset their phone. Another had to bring up the QR code twice for it to work. I’m all for convenience but this was a bit much and annoying
Nice people and decent food. However, I find it really frustrating how I have to order online. I don’t want to make an account, I don’t want to enter my number, I just want food and I want to get what I order. Would come back for the ambiance and food but I’m not coming back until they change the ordering system. I ain’t using my phone data and charge to pay!
Really disappointed with the ordering system here. I find it frankly classist that their system relies upon people having smartphones and cards. Many cities are banning card-only businesses because it creates an unnecessary barrier for people who may not have bank accounts. I know it’s probably to save money, but I’m sure they also don’t mind that lower income folks can’t access their bar…
The ordering system at TRU is terrible. You place your order by using a tablet which is on a counter by the bar. The program on the tablet is complicated and confusing. It is not user friendly or convenient! When I was there, a line quickly formed as people were trying to figure out how to use the tablets. On top of it, you can’t pay using the tablet. You have to pay an employee who stands at the counter. So, you have to wait in line again for that. I wanted to order a salad but the items on the menu in the tablet had no description. There is just a list of items to choose. I selected a spinach salad, turkey, and a raspberry dressing. I assumed the spinach salad would have some additional toppings. Wrong! I literally got a bowl full of spinach with some chopped turkey and dressing on the side. On the bright side, my order came out quickly. The ordering system is so frustrating and disappointing that I will not return to this restaurant.
I used to love this place, but since they've gone solely to the app ordering it's just not the same. I watched three different groups leave when no one came to their table. Not everyone know you have to use the app to order. Signs need to be on every table.
The atmosphere and decor is awesome. However, as soon as you get to the point of purchase, good luck. The process to order is extremely cumbersome and confusing. I feel bad for the staff that have to find who ordered what… Website is absolute trash. We had a group of 20 people and not a single person was able to make an order without help.
Went here for a recruitment event this past week. Decor and cleanliness seemed solid, though the lights in the area we had reserved were incredibly dim to the point of being difficult to make out the expressions of the people you were talking with. I had heard some horror stories about how hard it was to order here because you have to order through a website you access through a QR code. Coworkers said they no longer went to TRU because of the website ordering system. Some people I was with struggled, and repeatedly took five literal minutes to figure out how to place an order, but I didn’t find the system terrible. The wait times were atrocious though. I had ordered a couple of beers and noticed that they seemed to take quite a while. This wait time was particularly annoying because when ordering you (quite reasonably) have to put in your location so the server knows where to deliver your drink to. I ordered a beer while sitting in the couch area as I wanted a drink before mingling with people on the other side of the room. I then had to sit there on by the couches until my drink finally showed up so I could more freely move around wherever I wanted, which was a pain. With my third beer (at a time when things weren’t particular busy) I started a timer as soon as I placed my order. The beer took 21 minutes and 17 seconds to arrive. After the server dashed off to the other side of the restaurant I took a sip and discovered I had been served a fruity cider rather than the simple lager I had ordered the better part of a half hour ago. Seems like a fine place to get food with a friend (wait times wouldn’t be as big of a deal for that), but I will be advocating against my department holding any events here again. The clunky ordering system was just a horrible obstacle to getting decent service and actually mingling with people. If management wants to fix things, they need to make it possible to order a beer by just going up to the bar and paying for it. Until that basic service in available, I wont be coming back, and I imagine the owner/manager will keep defending the website ordering system in their review replies even as more and more of my social circle avoids doing any business with TRU because of it.
The place has great potential but the ordering system is so inefficient. If you just want to have one drink and a meal it’s fine, but after that it’s easier to just go someplace else where you can just ask the bartender to hand you another beer, as simple as that. It also uses single use plastic utensils which in 2023 shouldn’t be the go-to for places this innovative.
Great central location. Historic, charming building. Lovely atmosphere. Comfortable and varied seating. Bartender, Nicco, is warm, intelligent, and engaging. Food is high quality and reasonably priced, but the menu is quite limited. Ordering is weird. What if my phone is dead? Maybe the bartender should have an iPad to help the fumbling boomers who want a glass of wine. Would gladly pay a little more to speak my order to the lovely Nicco. Would also like to have the option to leave a "custom tip" over $3. Even a slip of paper where the guest checks off ingredients they want on the sandwich (like you order rolls at the sushi bar) would be better. Or, consider this amazing innovation: guests could pay in American dollars, which would entail no credit card fees to anyone! Why does my food come to me in a paper sack like they want me to leave, even after I told their computer that I was "dine-in"? Saw lots of students studying and heard some of them try to order coffee...but they don't have coffee. Also, this is a wine bar, why can't I order a charcuterie? They have all the elements on the sandwich menu, so it wouldn't even be a stretch. Is it because they don't have plates and it doesn't fit nicely into a paper bag? This place has so much wonderful potential to be a comfy hangout for adults who want to relax with a glass of pinot after work or meet a colleague during the day outside of the office. You know, the kind of people with a credit card who live in Chapel Hill all year round. The online only ordering feels alienating to this demographic. It's a bar. Let me lay down a card and open a tab and treat my friends. Let me pore over an actual printed menu with my girlfriend. Instead, I must suspend human connection while I fondle an app on my phone. Again. I'm starting to wonder if management is a low IQ AI that has only read about what a cozy wine bar is like, but isn't capable of going to one because they are plugged into the wall, controlling the wrong things. The AI is hallucinating about the kind of business this is. A glass of wine is a luxury, a treat, a discretionary expenditure. The clientele is not in a big hurry or avoiding speaking to people. And they will gladly pay 3% more so you can get an actual POS system and they talk with the bartender about their order. The environs are all there, but the business model better suits a take out window.
Probably the worst drink ordering I have ever experienced. 2 servers for the whole bar and had to order via QR code that didn’t work half the time. Orders didn’t go thru on the app and then it took 55 minutes to get a bottle of wine sent to our table. Did not eat food. Atmosphere was decent. Real struggle for a Friday night without being able to order a drink at the bar.
I really enjoy TRU. I went there for a business happy hour and have been back several times since then. The food and people that work there are great! However, and this should come to no surprise if you have read other reviews, the ordering system is horrible. So horrible that when I first worked with it I thought I was being scammed. I'm pretty good with computers and I have struggled to operate it. Once I just gave up and walked out. It's slow, glitchy, and weirdly you sometimes get totally black screens. I see the owner has responded to several reviews about the system with the same response that due to costs they have gone to a "low-labor high-tech model". Low labor sure; high tech? This system looks like it was designed by a 12 year old in the late 90s. You also must use the system. I talked with one of the bartenders and they told me that the owner just simply doesn't care to change to another system or update the one they have now. That staff commonly have to deal with frustrated customers who can't get it to work. I've wanted to go to TRU more frequently (first dates, after work drinks), but have decided not to because the idea of fumbling on my phone for 15 minutes to order a beer isn't appealing. Also you can't start a tab, you have to use the system for each new order. A new POS might increase costs, but I would argue it would also increase revenue as people would simply be ordering more.
What a disappointment. I literally recommended you in a review a week ago... Ya’ll used to have the best roast beef sandwich in town (when you opened in 2012/2013). Now you serve something even Arby’s wouldn’t touch. Dry, salty, and tough as a well done $1 steak. I couldn’t eat the meat so in the end I paid you $8 for a mediocre tomato-green pepper-spinach-bean sprout Swiss melt. 0/10... this isn’t the Tru I fell in love with.
Will never be coming back to Tru Deli again. Have been waiting outside for 2 hours and was told I would be let on on the phone if I arrived when I did. After two hours we were still waiting outside. They were expecting us to wait outside until the last minute before the DUKE UNC game after waiting for 2 hours. Unacceptable. I don’t recommending supporting them.
I ordered a sandwich to go and waited 30 minutes before leaving to pick it up (online indicated a 20 minute wait). I paid and waited an additional 30 minutes at Tru Deli and never got my sandwich. I tried to catch the attention of a few staff but wasn’t able to so I just left having paid and never having gotten the sandwich.
I decided to come here before going to work. Hoping it would be a quick lunch, I ordered a pretty simple sandwich and salad. After waiting 30 minutes I approached the server about my order and was told that my sandwich was made incorrectly and that they were remaking it. I sat there for another 15 minutes before someone from the kitchen brought my order to me, no apologies were given for the wait. I got to work late and wasn't even able to eat my sandwich till later. I'm not sure if they are understaffed right now but I didn't expect my lunch to take 45 minutes to make. This was my first time coming here, so not a great first impression.
Had my last drink at Tru last night. The app makes for an impersonal experience with the staff (who was very nice as we tried to get the app to work) and limits the bar entirely to what’s listed on the app. For example, I wanted a simple drink - a French 75, which is gin + Prosecco + lemon juice … the bar has the ingredients, but it’s not in the app, I couldn’t order it. Again the bartender was apologetic, but his hands were tied as that was the only point of sale available. Husband wanted an old fashioned but again, not possible here any more. The app is logical for food but created such a complicated system to get a cocktail that we didn’t really want.
required ordering from your phone only, no exceptions, and the app didn't work. So we went to one of the other dozen restaurants within the square block offering a human server, and had a great meal.
I really dont like giving this review but after the experience yesterday, I have to. First, you have to order on your phone. They do not accept any physical payment here. Not only the inconvenience, but during the "sign up online to order" process, they get your phone number and email for marketing purposes. Secondly, the beer selection is horrendous. All craft beer without any selection of domestic. (I get the whole North Carolina craft beer thing but come on man). Finally, I ordered the new EASIEST drink known to man. Vodka neat with a splash of water. What I got was vodka on ice with a lime wedge. This whole process from opening the door to getting my incorrect drink took about 10 to 15 minutes, and that includes the sign up process. A few years ago this place was kinda cool but what the hell happened?! The vibe feels like a cigar bar lounge atmosphere whereas before, it seemed a little more inviting. Needless to say, I will not be back.
We have been here before but our last experience was the worst. We walked up to the bar that was 80% empty and ordered beers. The bartender told us we would have to order online. This has never happened before but ok, whenever, so we do. I typed in our entire beer order online, entire my credcard number, expiration date, code, etc. all while the bartender just stands there hanging out doing nothing and the app doesn’t register anything. I ask the bartender for help and she says oh yeah this has happened a lot lately. So she takes my phone and enters everything again. Entered my card number and info again. And in all of this time she could have already just poured our beers and swiped my card at least 2-3 times. But nope. Still ordering on the phone. To each his own but just seems a little lazy to me. Service was much better at the bar when a bartender just asked for my order and got my beer. This was Annoying.
The online ONLY ordering system is a disaster. Spending seven minutes an having to register on two online platform to order a few beers is unacceptable. It's a killer of a vibe (though easy reason to leave zero tips) and a reason to NOT go to True. The management shall stop emotional attachment to this horrible human-less robotic apocalyptic cumbersome online ordering system and use a simple easy bartender-led old-school payment way. Outside of that, amazing bar, five stars for the vibe, zero starts for the payment system, 5*0=0.
I ordered a sandwich with tuna salad. I got all of the toppings except tuna salad. What else is there to say, this is trash.
It's a nice enough space. Would have been a happy repeat customer along with academic friends (4-12) who meet at least once per week in this area. Having to order through the most hopeless app is a major no. Won't be back. A dumb, sad reason to lose business, but ordering drinks should be a convenience; certainly not a hindrance.
Went here for a post work happy hour with out of state guests. The ordering system is a mess - the QR code didn't work, the tablets they provided didn't work, and you can't order with a server. We ordered sandwiches and they came in paper bags like cheap to-go food. They don't have anything on the menu for table sharing. It felt like an indoor food truck and not in a good way. There wasn't a single NC based beer on the menu. It took over 45 minutes for our party of 10 to get any drinks or service because their system wasn't working and the servers didn't know what to do. The one redeeming quality was that our guests said the sandwiches were delicious.
They mixed up my friend and I’s order, I ordered roast beef and she if FULLY vegetarian. She only realized a quarter through the sandwich that she was eating my order. She is Hindu so she doesn’t eat beef !!!! Ridiculous, they also messed up my other friends order, put pickles and forgot avocados.
