Opinions de Spoon Chappaqua
Excellent, one of the best restaurants I’ve been in Westchester. Food was delicious, beautifully presented, the pasta with shrimp and sea urchin was the highlight of the evening, as well as the sea scallops! Beautiful warm ambiance, and excellent service! Worth it! We had a great dinner with our friends Mari and Alex. Contemporary Italian restaurant in Chappaqua, New York, led by Chef Peter X. Kelly, known for blending traditional Italian flavors with modern techniques using fresh, seasonal ingredients. It offers a cozy yet elegant atmosphere, praised for its homemade pastas, seafood risotto, and a popular Sunday brunch with tableside service. The restaurant is noted for its warm ambiance, professional service, and dishes like black squid ink pasta, short ribs, and tiramisu.
Very good food and service here. the pastas are great and the fishes are excellent as well. will be returning.
We have dined at Basso twice now. It is a beautiful little restaurant tucked away down a small street in Chappaqua. It is a great find. The service is excellent with a well trained staff who are efficient and non intrusive. The wine selection is extensive and the recommendations by the staff are spot on to your preferences. The food is incredible. Perfectly prepared pasta with creative and delicious toppings. Anything you order is fresh, well prepared, and nicely presented. If you are lucky, Peter Kelly is there when you go and you get to meet this talented and gracious Master Chef. It is a great dining experience. Not to be missed.
Extraordinarily good brunch this past Sunday! Maybe dinners I've enjoyed at River Cafe are competitive, but nuthin else has been. It's like Chinatown dim sum, but Italian chow instead. Many different things are in constant circulation -- steak, pork, pasta, ceasar salad, sausage, chicken cutlet, on and on.... Mimosas.... and a special adult bev concoction -- "green tea shooters" -- that I requested and was right-away served up even though they'd never made one before. Perfect. Chocolate gelato was one of the many excellent desserts, and though I'm not a big chocolate fan theirs turned me right around. Everything was so good that it's hard to point to one thing and say "this was a standout" because they were all standouts. But I'll just say "Fettuccine Alfredo" and leave it at that... It was nice of Peter Kelly to stop by to say hi and ask us if we were havin a real good time 😎. Obvious answer. Special tip of the hat to our server, Johnny, who was a real pleasure! It was impossible to ask him for anything that he was unable to order up for us. Excellent staff, a swell table next to the front window facing the little street scene, and they even hooked up a small space heater for one of our party. Like, come on.....! This joint will be hard to top. We made a reservation for a return engagement before we walked out the door. I've got their phone number on speed dial. It was simply that good.
3 of us went last night and were totally impressed in every way. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with comfortable seating. The service was very polite and attentive. Between the menu and specials there were plenty of options. And everything we ate was superb. I can’t wait to go back
Basso by PXK in Chappaqua was a fantastic find. We went twice, and each visit the food was consistently delicious with a wide range of great options. The chef Peter Kelly was really friendly and even stopped by to greet us, and the service and atmosphere were excellent. Definitely recommend!
We’ve dined at Basso twice in the last couple months and we really enjoyed both dinners. The staff is attentive and helpful - great with our children. The restaurant is quaint and the food is quality. Specials always lovely. Will be back.
My husband and I having been going to Basso’s for a couple of years. We love the food, the people and the atmosphere. Food is consistently good and Sam makes us feel welcomed all the time. A must try!
As a long time X2O customer, my wife and I had to try out Basso. We have had countless brunches at X2O, had my mother's retirement party there, anniversary parties, baby shower, celebrated New Year Eve, engagement party, and even got married at X2O, so we are well acquainted with Peter Kelly's work. However going to Basso by PXK you kind have to remove ever notion of X2O you had food wise and re-calibrate it towards a totally different genre that he never really served at X2O, Bully Boy, or Restaurant X, which were much more new American with fusion flare. Sunday we went for brunch and went at 1:30pm and it was packed but by the time we were sat the brunch crowd was simmering down. At your table you are greeted with an Italian themed charcuterie of Soppressata, chunks of Parmesan, walnuts, a tangerine, grapes, olives, and Italian bread. Again, very different than the baguettes and blue cheese biscuits of his other restaurants. Unlike X2O where the meal was a three course menu of your choice, the meal consists of ten small portions of salads, pasta, fish, and meat, with a mixture of shared desserts at the end. The portions are tasting portions, so small but over 10 courses you are stuffed. My wife's biggest qualm was you are given one single plate, so her OCD of mixing food was heightened. My qualm was, while I enjoyed the tasting aspect of the meal, you could never lock onto one thing you loved. Granted you could also come back and order the full entry and I am guessing this style of brunch was done because it's so much more profitable and economical for the restaurant than making separate three courses, which surely was loss leader at X2O. Speaking of the money, the brunch is still a value like X2O at $42 and you will not leave hungry by any chance, but unlike X2O tea, coffee, Bellini and other Prosecco drinks and soda are note included and again margin leaders like soda, coffee, and alcohol are pretty high priced, ie $3 for a Soda no refills, $6 coffee, and $18 cocktails, although Prosecco drinks were priced at a reasonable $5. The highlights for me were the mushroom risotto which was insanely creamy and flavorful albeit just a tad too Al dente, the roast pork, the alfredo, and the Roman style steak had to be one of the most flavor and tender steaks I have ever had. One of the few misses was the salads, in that the Cesar was just blank with no richness to be found from anchovies, egg yolk, and cheese. It simply tasted like a bottle light version of Cesar dressing. My only assumption this was done to keep the first course very light. The same with the mescaline salad, which again was just okay with a very basic vinaigrette. Not to get too personal, but I believe Kelly in his previous restaurants sacrificed profitability for consumer access and while Basso's brunch is not the value X2O's was, at $42 in Chappaqua, with $5 Prosecco drinks, and kids under 8 eating for free I will save this Peter Kelly still catering to the masses and allowing as many people from every backgrounds eat his amazing food. Well done chef. We will be back.
Lovely rooms. For brunch there is no menu. Service is similar to Pete Kelly's long closed Bully Boy in Rockland, waiters come around with numerous options (one at a time) that you can have.
What a magnificent restaurant! Chef Peter X. Kelly has another masterpiece on his hands! Everything we ordered was fabulous and I reccommend going for a taste of one of the house-made pasta dishes. The duck was worthy of the highest praise and a favorite of the table. The experience is one which I will return to, for many years to come! A+++
Food that’s at another level - the seafood risotto, the eggplant and ricotta pasta, the pesto pasta, insane! It’s the best Italian in Westchester. Their homemade pastas are so top-notch and fresh, the seafood risotto is SO creamy and addictive, my favorite. Even the apple tart dessert is one of the best I’ve had. Gorgeous backyard patio with tons of outdoor seating with umbrellas. Can’t wait to go back. 5 stars!!!!
The smells from the kitchen were exactly like my home on Sunday while my mother prepared Sunday dinner. The food too tasted just like my mother's. The white bread exactly like my mother's homemade bread which she made daily. Do not miss this place. My parents are from Abruzzo region in Italy and I felt like I was there. LOVE IT!! WILL NEVER SKIP this place each time we come to NYC.
Another great meal at this amazing place- Basso 56. On tap today we decided to go off book , no lunch prix for $24.95 which has plenty of awesome choices....today pic 1. was Grilled Calamari over arugula with a tasty vinaigrette for an appetizer. The entree special I could not pass up, Osso Busso, my dad taught me well never pass up the opportunity to try Osso Bucco.... 2 pic Osso Bucco over saffron rice drizzled with truffle oil....it came out piping hot and was so tender to bite into, it melted in your mouth. A beautiful piece , the shank had plenty of meat on it, cooked perfectly and saffron rice added to complete this amazing meal. The best part was the succulent bone marrow that had been marinating in the middle of this shank just waiting to be eaten .....so delicious..oh my....of course to end this lunch extravaganza of tastes and to cleanse the palate went with their gelato and perfect cappuccino.... this place never disappoints....
An excellent meal! Reservations are definitely recommended. This restaurant has a small town Italian family feel in the big city. Our meals were amazing, all of the pasta is homemade. Despite the smaller size of the restaurant, we were able to hold a conversation easily on a busy night. Staff was friendly, helpful and responsive.
The salad and entrée were both excellent. Ordered the affogato for desert. The waitress (excellent) was at first confused but then said, "oh the ice cream in coffee" and went off the kitchen before I could say anything. And that's exactly what I received. Two vanilla scoops dropped into regular coffee and served. (vs. ice cream with a quality expresso shot poured OVER the ice cream and immediately served (makes for a 100% difference and not in a good way). Because it was very busy and she was working so hard, I didn't complain. Me thinks she might have been trying to help out the staff and simply made the incorrect affogato herself. If not, for such a high quality restaurant, maybe a staff meeting: that an affogato is not the waitress's sequence.
Just went for dinner - very professional service especially for a crowded Saturday night. Atmosphere was perfect for conversation and a leisurely meal. Standout dishes- short ribs with broccoli rabe, black squid ink pasta with tender assorted seafood, tiramisu cake, baked clams. The menu is pretty standard Italian fare. In order to get that 5th star it needs a little more Chef Peter Kelly magic. I will return- this restaurant is recommended.
Came here last weekend for a birthday dinner. Had to wait over 40 minutes for our table even though we had a reservation. There were other families waiting as well and we were shoved by the front door with no room to move. Then, the wait staff rushed our meal and once it was time for dessert, the waiter told us to make a decision because the “kitchen was closing.” It was totally unfair to do that since we were sat down 45 minutes late. The only good part of the night was the food.
I have been here 3 times. The first two visits were good! The food was really delicious. I am giving it fewer starts based on the most recent (and last) visit. We made a reservation over a month out. We were hosting out of town friends and were looking forward to eating here. When we arrived, we were told our table was not ready, nor could they tell us when it would be. The place was packed and we waited outside. We checked back in every 15 mins. For AN HOUR. It was the living episode of Seinfeld — you can take the reservation but can you HOLD the reservation? The whole experience was disappointing and unprofessional on so many levels. Needless to say, we left an hour later as no sign of the table being available was happening. Drove 20 mins to another place and had immediate seating and lovely service —a palette cleanser after such a poor experience at basso.
Unfortunately, I had high expectations for this restaurant. My wife had previously eaten there and enjoyed her meal a lot. She took me there, and unfortunately, both of us thought that the meal was very subpar. We shared Caesar salad, a pasta with eggplant and ricotta, and the steak Florentine. The salad was so so, the pasta was actually pretty good, but the steak was really not very tasty and overcooked. For dessert, we have the chocolate torte and vanilla ice cream, but the menu neglected to say that it had walnuts, which neither of us like, and would not have ordered it had been accurately represented. The service happened to be excellent however. Considering the service, I maybe would’ve rated this a three, but the food was so disappointing, it really doesn’t deserve it.
I would love to review the actual food but I can't since I walked in and my table was given away - seemingly by the chef. We were told we could wait at the bar and I was worried brunch was winding down and realized that it was incredibly loud, maybe ok for some people but not for us. So I asked the other members of my party what they wanted to do and they opted to leave. We did mention it to the hostess and there was nothing really to fix it but it was really disappointing. Especially since we've dined at the chef's restaurants for literally more than 15 years. Super disappointed.
