Opinions de Golden Owl Tavern Charlotte
I dined here three days in a row (3 dinners and one breakfast) during my stay at the UNC Marriott and left impressed each time. Visiting from NYC and being a frequent traveller, I’m used to a high restaurant bar—and Golden Owl Tavern easily held its own. Easily one of the best steaks I’ve had. Even when the dining room wasn’t busy, the food came out fresh, hot, and well-seasoned, with timing that never felt rushed or slow. Service was friendly, professional, and attentive in a low-key way, and the consistency across multiple visits really stood out. A genuinely pleasant surprise for a hotel restaurant.
Huge shout-out to Marcus at the Marriott bar! Great drinks and even better personality. The hotel actually lost power during my visit, and Marcus handled the situation like a complete professional, keeping the vibes high and a smile on his face the whole time. Truly exceptional service! The Deviled Eggs were Cool
Was looking for somewhere close to the pnc pavilion and discovered this amazing place. We sat at the bar and Nikki and Q took care of us. The drinks were amazing. I got the drink with the empress gin. My friend got a dirty martini and an espresso martini. She’s very picky about these 2 drinks and she told everyone to get them. We ordered a few small plates. The Brussels were phenomenal. The spinach dip was some of the best I’ve ever tasted. We also shared the prime rib French dip. All I can say is holy cow that might be one of the best things I’ve ever had. This sandwich made me happy. Planning on taking another trip to Charlotte soon so I can come eat here again. I didn’t take pictures when we got our food because I don’t usually take pictures of my food. Here is after we had eaten most of it
The service was amazing, and the atmosphere was perfect. we went for our anniversary and the place was top notch. The musician playing that night was perfect. He was loud enough to hear, but we were still able to carry on a conversation. The food was beautiful and tasty, I would have given it a 5. However, they overcooked the porkchop, and it was a little dry. All the other dishes were great.
The atmosphere and interior of the whole place is nice. Got the deviled eggs that were delicious, Nashville hot chicken sandwich is a pretty solid paired with the old bay seasoned fries. Wifey is on the fence with the po’boy. Would have gotten dessert but the shortage in the kitchen staff made wait times a bit longer so we opted out.
Absolutely delicious! Food was great and so were the drinks and service. Definitely my new upscale spot in the University area. The steak was delicious and tender; lumps of crab meat in the soup; the oysters were fresh; and the scallops and grit cakes were perfect! Great ambiance and ideal for a date night or dinner with friends.
We picked this as our restaurant week choice this year and really enjoyed it! They were very accommodating when we showed up 40 minutes late for our reservation. Traffic to get there from the opposite side of town during rush hour was no joke! My husband I split our meals. We got the Country Ham & Biscuit, Fried Green Tomatoes, Smoked Mac & Cheese, Bison Meatloaf, Banana Puddin', and Blueberry Cornbread Puddin'. Everything was really good. My favorite things were probably the Bison Meatloaf and the Blueberry Cornbread Puddin'. I'm not usually a meatloaf person, but this one was really flavorful! I loved the substitution of cornbread instead of a traditional bread pudding. The service was a little hit or miss. Our first two courses came out really fast, but then it took forever to get our dessert and then a really long time to get our check. That's alright though. I'm glad restaurant week gave us an excuse to check out this new spot!
This place was great. Spotless, open but cozy, service was phenomenal. We tried a little bit of everything. The deviled eggs and the PUTTIN’ ON THE SPRITZ drink were our favorites. Unfortunately the short ribs mac n cheese special wasn't that great way too much gouda not enough cheddar plenty of short rib though. The hanger steak was delicious and the carrots and mashed potatoes were so good we wanted more. Sad to say though the pecan pie and the banana pudding didn't taste nearly as good as they looked... the strawberry dessert was decadent and very delicious. The pricing was very reasonable and the quality was outstanding overall. Can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu. FYI valet wasn't great might as well just park in the shared UNCC parking deck
We are here for my fiancé’s birthday and sat at the bar. Our bartender, Guillermo, was absolutely fantastic. Very personable and made the most perfect cocktails! The food was spot on as well. We started with the country pate and the fired green tomatoes. For entrees, we shared the hanger steak and the macaroni and cheese with short ribs special. Yum!!
Tried them for the first time during restaurant wk and I got the winter spritz drink, Brussels salad, bison meatloaf and blueberry cornbread pudding. All were great but that bison meatloaf is the real star of the show. I’ve honestly never had bison so for it to be my first time I was pleasantly pleased. The ambience is very lovely, great for a date night, girls night or even just a solo dining experience. I’ll admit service was a bit slow but honestly just about anywhere you dine now is due to staffing shortages so I always carry some extra patience with me when I dine out. Folks are trying their best and the customer service was great in spite of. Can’t want to go back.
Highly recommend giving them a try! We were staying in the hotel for the weekend and decided to grab some food and didn't want to travel or have a long wait. They sat us fairly quick and the server was very prompt, Anah(hopefully that's spelled correctly) did an amazing job of keeping us well hydrated(10people) and making sure we didn't need anything. My wife and I ordered the smoked wings, BBQ flat bread, and deviled eggs. The eggs were the best I've ever had, the wings and flat bread was amazing also. I'll definitely be going back again. Restaurant was very clean and inviting, atmosphere was awesome, whether a group or a couple wanting to just have a nice dinner and a few drinks. Victoria was the hostess and she did an amazing job getting us seated promptly all the while apologizing for the short wait.
Great surprising experience. An expansive place with tables at a good distance, nice light, great service but the food but the food was yummy. Some of my friends had the meatloaf, they loved it, generous portions that they devoured 😁 The burger was super tasty, with pimento cheese that was incredible and tasty crispy french fries. We all want to come back soon. Not too many diners that day and high ceilings gave us a sense of safety from covid.
Crrrazy busy breakfast (and lunch?) eatery that was oddly the only thing open at a local outdoor mall thingy. Lots of folks getting their breakfast grub on, so you know it is good. Cool view of a manmade lake and the surrounding hotels. Wanted to sample some adult beverages but drinking and showing up for work is frowned upon. Had the Carolina Hot Chicken. Supposed to be hot, right? Nah. I think they were trying to scare folks. Definitely couldn't hold a fire next to some legit NASHVILLE Hot Chicken. Seriously, if you're gonna claim to be hot, be hot! Don't tickle me and laugh and say, "Ha, fooled ya, Old Dude!" Despite the lack of serious heat, it was still a good sammich. Cool theme to the place. Great service. Good view. Probably bring your first date here and they'll thank you. My last "first date" was back in the 90s so maybe I'm wrong. I liked the Golden Owl Tavern. Might go back to try the tavern side of things and write a follow-up review if the drinks are stronger than the chicken.
This place opened recently and I got the chance to drop in and have a bite to eat. Usually nice hotels have good food and a decent eating experience, but this place is new so I wasn't terribly optimistic. Valet parking was free for the restaurant. I had the Bison meatloaf and the peach cheesecake. The meatloaf was fantastic and the cheesecake was indescribable. Caleb and Guillermo were my bartenders and they were outstanding. I loved Caleb's positive demeanor and Guillermo' amazing stories about a brilliant life experience outside the United States.
First time here and I'm so happy it was walking distance from my place. The chicken pizza was so good. You get a good size for the price you pay for. Staff was super friendly and nice. Our waiter was just great! I can wait to try the brunch menu. Decor inside was amazing. They did everything correct with this place. From the food to the decor and staff. I will be coming back for my birthday dinner. This place is a must to go and try.
The meatloaf, the fried green tomatoes and the deviled eggs are to die for! Everything came out very fast as well. Customer service was decent. I love the ambiance of the restaurant too...great date nice place.
The food was great me and my Auntie went here and the steak was mind blowing 5-stars waiter was good too🫶🏾
I'm going to say it: This is the nicest restaurant in the university area. And even though that's not saying much, this is still a really nice place. I think "tavern" is a bit of a misnomer. This is more of an upscale hotel lounge / restaurant. Beautiful interior with a great open kitchen featuring wood burning pizza oven. The location is inside the brand new Marriott hotel and conference center in the University area - on the UNCC campus and directly adjacent to the light rail stop. Parking could be problematic for those not already on campus or at the hotel/conference center. Valet parking is an option and so is parking at the light rail deck, which also isn't free. The menu is interesting and we will be back to try other options. But this time we settled for the duck wings (I think they're actually the legs of the duck) which were really yummy in a sweet glaze. And we try the andouille pizza as the idea of collards on a pizza was too interesting to pass up. The crust reflected the wood burning oven well and was excellent. The collards really added zero and the red chili peppers were a little over the top in the spicy department. So I would get pizza but not the andouille. We had beer and the draft menu was sufficient. Wine did seem expensive though, as the cheapest glass of Cabernet was $14. I imagine many folks drinking the wine won't care as they will be expensing it. It will be interesting to see if this place ends up being a dining destination in the university area, which sorely lacks nicer restaurants, or if it ends up being strictly a hotel restaurant for out of town business folks and people using the new conference center.
Excellent shrimp and grits. Great coffee. The maître d/ manager was very personable. Great servers!
I saw the bartender on the local news here in Charlotte. My friends & I decided to give it a try! Everything was absolutely delicious. The service, food & drinks did not disappoint!!
We had a great experience. The restaurant is inside the Marriott Hotel, the food was delicious totally recommended and the service was really good. Will definitely come back
I came across this restaurant on Google and was skeptical about trying it. I looked at the photos and thought, “why not!?” We arrived and noticed the restaurant was inside of a Marriott, which by the way is beautiful and upscale. We reviewed the menu and tried 5 dishes. The fish and chips, corn salsa dip, french dip, pepperoni flatbread and I can’t forget about the deviled eggs. Y’all, this is a HIDDEN GEM!!!!!!! Let me start with Sayquan, our server, was phenomenal! He was well mannered, remembered every single detail of our order and gave great customer service! Not to mention he has the skin of an angel! (I whispered that to my boyfriend, lol). PLEASE give this man a raise!!! He deserves it! We will definitely be back and will be sure to tell others!! Thank you for such hospitality.
Marcus at the bar was great. Last 5 years our family and friends have made it a tradition to gather at the Golden Owl on Christmas Eve. This year we had 5O people show but Marcus the lone bartender/mixologist handled it like a champion. We had light food fare and it all was good. We will back for a 6th Christmas Eve…
My family and I ate here for mother day and we truly enjoyed our time together. Jordan was the host and he was super polite and friendly , and Marissa was our sever also super polite and friendly. Our food was delicious and Marissa checked in regularly to see if we needed anything. Overall great hospitality and friendly staff , we’ll definitely be back.
The pasta was great. Definitely order this. The service and atmosphere was very nice. I will be coming back.
Located inside the Marriott in the University Area, it is a nice tavern with a delicious brunch fare offered on the weekends. The decor is attractive and comfortable. They close at 2pm on the weekends and reopen at 4pm for dinner service. I thought brunch was good...but dinner fare is awesome. Had the best meatloaf (bison) in my life. Charming dinner atmosphere and there was a soloist, Cameron Moore, with some pretty good pipes singing us through our meal. Great place for dinner!
My wife and I went there this morning for our 2nd year wedding anniversary. We were honestly surprised by how nice the inside of the restaurant was. The décor was really nice and the ambience was perfect. The table we sat at was huge and the seats were extremely comfortable. We ordered the Nashville hot deviled eggs as an appetizer, we had the buttermilk chicken and waffles and the southern benedict. For the most part the food was pretty good. I really enjoyed the peach chutney on top of the chicken. My one big complaint was the poached eggs on the benedict were vastly overcooked. The whole point of a poached egg is for it to run on top of the food after you break it open. These eggs were hard boiled and missed the mark. The potatoes were amazing, nice and crunchy. Our only other complaint was that was asked our server twice for a second cup of coffee and it never came. Overall, good spot and we will be back to try some cocktails and the dinner menu.
We went to The Golden Tavern on Saturday, April 24th. We had reservations for 7pm. It's valet-parking only, but there's no charge. Someone took our car at the front of the Marriott Hotel, where the restaurant is located on the 2nd floor. We were seated right away, and got drinks and our appetizers in a reasonable amount of time. The restaurant was pretty busy, but everyone appeared to be seated a good distance apart and it didn't feel crowded or unsafe. Some time after placing our dinner order and another drink order, our waitress just disappeared. I had to ask a roaming bus girl and/or manager for my drink and to find out what happened to our waitress. My husband would have ordered another drink but we had practically finished our meals by the time she finally came back. That really put a damper on our evening. We shared a dessert and my husband ordered an after-dinner drink. The deviled eggs were not worth it, they only came with 4 halves (2 eggs). The fried green tomatoes were very good and I think the better appetizer choice. For dinner, I got a flatbread which was tasty. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits, which was also very small-portioned and overpriced. The cocktails were a good size and tasty, although the after-dinner drink was a bit too strong. (Although I guess that's hardly a complaint?) For dessert we shared the chocolate pecan pie, which was very good. Overall a mixed experience. Maybe we would come back to sit on the patio and share a flatbread with friends, but not the full dining experience.
It's inside the hotel on second flr. Yes, it's free valet parking for restaurant patrons. The entrance of the hotel is at the back of the bldng, not the lynx train side. Got in the lobby then elevators to this restaurant and let me tell you this does give a chic tavern feel to it. We were promptly seated by the windows in an intimate setting by a very happy host. Looking around , seemed like it's mostly business casual kinda spot. Our server (veronica, i think was her name) was very pleasant and very helpful. We ordered a BBQ chicken Flatbread for apps with tea and I had an old fashioned. Tho I'm not a whiskey kinda gal but the fig syrup and citrus mix just elevated the taste. For dinner I he ordered po boy sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed it. But he took the peppers off cuz it was very spicy for him. I ordered Nashville chicken burger with Carolina potatoes and ordered a side of charred cauliflower as they didn't have the broccoli available. The chicken itself had good breading but I wonder if it was fried in the same oil as chicken tasted like fish. The burger itself with flavors was really really good. I don't think I'll ordered the potatoes next time as it was bland and ketchup had it going. Cauliflower was good and definately worth a try. Rr were very clean . We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here and I was pleasantly surprised how the manager was actually involved in helping the servers and stopped by to check in. Usually, they don't.
It appears my initial reciew made in April was deleted. In short I had high expectations of a higher end restaurant located in a premiere hotel. It missed the mark with delayed service and overcooked yellow tail on a day that was not crowded. The best thing was the deviled eggs.
Had the NC breakfast plate. It was pretty tasty and only needed a little bit of salt for the eggs. They were short staffed so be aware for that but our waitress was good.
Ate here with a group of about 25 people. Our server was excellent. Appetizers (roasted brussel sprouts, wings, and pizza/flatbread) were really good. Only reason I didn't give the food 5 stars was because of the steaks. Everyone at my table ordered steak, and they were all overcooked by at least one level. I ordered medium rare, and mine was more like medium well. Otherwise, great food and service.
We ordered a Reuben sandwich with a side salad, a chicken quesadilla and fried ricotta cheesecake. My sister raved about the Reuben sandwich and LOVED it. My chicken quesadilla needed more flavor and I thought the fried cheesecake balls were DELICIOUS. I wish I had just ordered the fried cheesecake because it was so rich and sweet but very good! The side salad that came with the sandwich would have been great if not for the mushy cherry tomatoes that were a little past their prime. Everything was delivered to our room HOT so no complaints there. So, the Reuben gets 5 stars, the quesadilla gets 3 stars, and the fried cheesecake gets 4.5 stars. I'd suggest just going downstairs and eating it there because the service charges that were added made the $46 meal into a $65 dollar meal but that's room service for you! lol
Server was great! Amazing attitude. Extremely helpful and makes great whiskey drinks. Spicy shrimp tacos - Not my cup of tea. Tasted fishy, shell was super soft like it was old. Extremely drippy like it was loaded with oil. Didn’t like much. Pasta - Great flavor. Just needed to be hotter temperature wise. Hot Spicy Chicken Sandwich - Oily, bread was way too moist from the “chow chow” which made the sandwich last enjoyable. The chicken wasn’t made properly. The presentation of the food was great. Wings (Buffalo) - Freshly made. Decent.
This meal was “average” but I’ve still enjoyed the atmosphere. The restaurant is inside the Marriott hotel on the 2nd floor with FREE valet parking (that’s a plus). I’ve gotten a burger which tasted okay just a little dry with no sauce on it (I’ve had to ask for some) the fries were soggy and not too fresh. Deviled eggs were good and Arnold Palmer drink tasted great. The Sea Bass fish tasted great as well but mashed potatoes doesn’t taste like your ordinary mashed potatoes. The waiter had a welcoming spirit. Overall it was an okay experience just wanted to try it out.
First time was on Sunday the service and ambiance was very nice! The deviled eggs are a must! The cornbread does not taste like corn bread, more like cake it was a no for me and my guest. I ordered the ribs with house potatoes. The rub on the ribs was very salty but I asked for barbecue sauce on the side which helped. Another guest had the short ribs and we had to send it back. It was really tasteless. Overall the deviled eggs would be the only reason to come back.
This is located in the hotel if you couldn't find it lol. Really nice vibe and atmosphere. Great service. Food is freshly made therefore needs to be really patient with it. We got a niner burger and chicken waffle for $36 plus tax. Quite pricey for the amount of food. But it is in a fancy hotel. Just happened to need a quick brunch without going too far.
Portion size of all plates was good. The deviled eggs appetizer with spicky chicken on top was creamy and had a nice kick. The green leaves used in the salads had a metallic taste, not very pleasant. The bison meatloaf was tasty and did not have an overpowering game taste and the sauce gave it a familiar meatloaf taste. Howecer, the broccoli that came with it was overdone. The two shrimp and grits our table received were not very good. The blueberry crumble cake was tasty but the banana pudding is whipped and missing the creamy texture. Atmosphere and ambiance was nice, tables were adequately sized for the number of seats per table (table of 4 had ample space for 5 apps, 8 drinks, 4 small plates, plus dinner plates) without feeling cramped. Bar area was open and light, but didnt sit at it.
Entering the hotel on the campus side was confusing. No signage indicating where the restaurant was located. Wait staff was very polite & attentive. The food was average
The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice and the deviled eggs were pretty good. However, our initial waiter was not very attentive. The manager did come to help us and a waitress in the area ended up helping us and she was amazing. Once our entrees came that is when it went downhill. Me and my friend ordered the Cajun crab and it was beyond salty. We only were able to take 1 small bite and had to send it back. The manager came and took the items back and asked us if we wanted replacements. We did receive 2 desserts of our choice and they were pretty good. My only suggestion is that they have the cooks not overcook the sauces because on the fig pudding the sauce tasted bitter almost burnt. Unfortunately, we will not be back even with the managers efforts. If you visit I suggest not ordering the Cajun crab.
The best item we ordered was the cornbread. The romaine salad was thrown together! The salad did not fit the description on the menu. I was so excited about tasting the deviled eggs. They were very cold, chicken topping was delicious but Nashville hot sauce was overpowering. Also, be prepared for a little wait on your food. The food is nothing to rave about. Our server was very good. The seating is questionable. The tables are so long you have to read lips to understand anything during your conversations. Also, you are sitting too close to other tables---very awkward. First and last time visit for me.
Visited on Father’s Day and was embarrassed by how long it took for our food to arrive. The restaurant was short staffed. Wished I had thoroughly read the reviews. Upon leaving this tall male wearing a gray suit, who appeared to be a manager, just stared at me and my family without thanking us for visiting. No wonder the reviews are not good. The only positives were the staff who were trying their best serve us although under staffed and the tasty food. Please get rid of the current management. The restaurant and its location is too nice to have slack management.
The service was perfectly fine but the food was just okay. We went for restaurant week. The biscuit was tasty but we are in the south so you can't try to tell me that prosciutto is country ham. I did enjoy the bread and butter pickles with a zing of spice. My shrimp was very good and cooked well but the grits tasted strange. There also were no mushrooms that I could see in the dish. Finally the bread pudding was fine but nothing I would need to order again. I wouldn't go back for full price.
I dined here on a Saturday night and it was not very busy. The restaurant has plain modern decor, and the seats were very comfortable. Quiet atmosphere, and good impressions at first. Wait staff were not so great. The manager on duty was very kind and attentive, but the 2 other waiters were disinterested and not attentive. I went with the 8oz steak and it was underwhelming. The char marks tasted like an unclean grill, and the potatoes are cut into large chunks and very crispy. I would probably come back and try a burger or sandwich, but their pricier options aren't worth it for my tastes.
Took an hour and a half to have 2 eggs bacon and potatoes. Cost $20 although the server was nice it took far to long.
This is our 2nd time eating here. Our 2nd visit was terrible! Our waitress was very rude. I ordered a ginger ale and it was clear as water. I tasted it and it tasted like chemicals. I told the waitress it tasted like chemicals no sorry, no nothing. She only said do you want something else. I said I want a ginger ale if you have it. She then came back with a ginger ale, she took the straw with the chemicals still in it from one drink and placed it in the other. I told her I do not want this because the straw still had the chemical remnants in it. She had a attitude and began to act nonchalant. I asked her can you bring me a can and I will just use the cup on the table. She was not friendly to us at all. She went above and beyond for the white people that was sitting at the other tables. She placed our ticket way across the table we had to stretch to reach. If you do not want to service people this isn't the industry for you. Your Nora F. Waitress is a racist and needs customer service training. Food was good but we will not return due to the terrible service.
Our server and the vibe was great! However the food was not good at all. My sandwich genuinely tasted like soap and my husbands pasta as bland. For what we were pay we were expecting a totally different experience. We both took 2 bites of our food and decided to go to chilies afterwards. Manager only took off 20% even tho the food was basically untouched.
So I know the workforce issue that restaurants are experiencing with covid but went for Saturday brunch, the place wasn't busy at all, but service was extremely slow , they ran out of chicken for the chicken and waffles and deviled eggs , we ordered fried tomatoes and the tomatoes were cut very thin and covered with thick breading , it was basically breading . The smoked Bacon eggs Benedict was very basic , the bacon was a slab of fat and their definition of Carolina fries are these thick lumps of breakfast potatoes with tasteless seasoning . Also their menu is expensive for the quality of the food , I won't be back .
Ordered a salad and added salmon. It was the tiniest most pathetic piece ever for a $30 salad. The manager came by and asked me and I said it was a very small portion and he just shrugged and walked off. He shouldn’t have asked if he didn’t want to hear the feedback…
This was my second time here. We had reservations both times and still had to wait to get seated. The first time was over 20 minutes and the second time was 10 minutes. I wanted to give them a second chance because the service and food was great the first time. Once seated, things continued to get worse. They were out of the two appetizers that we wanted and the food came to our table cold, soggy, extra salty and burnt. We were offered free appetizers for our wait to be seated and remakes of the dishes that were messed up (3/4 dishes). After receiving the remakes, we noticed that the steak wasn’t cut like before and the chicken was unseasoned. We spoke to the manager whom went back and forth about our check being covered and him giving us a discount. In the end we paid for all the dishes except the appetizer and 1 of the entrees and received a 15% discount. That was not near enough for the wait and horrible food experience we had. If your workers are spread too thin either only take reservations or close the restaurant.
