A fantastic little bistro with a great lunchtime menu. We try and stop of for lunch on our way to Anglesey for our holidays. It's one of the highlights

Ate here for the first time last night using some vouchers the kids got us for our anniversary. For quite a small place the experience was great. The food was excellent and the service was spot on. We really enjoyed it & will be back.

Finely crafted dishes with no pretension, served in an intimate and comfortable setting. Staff are welcoming and chatty, willing to engage on the details of the food but not pushy about showing off their knowledge. With brief details of particular recipes on the chalkboard, the team are clearly proud of the menu and keen to share their love of fine dining with an interested audience

First timer here. Small intimate restaurant. Absolutely delicious food. Presented so well that we felt like judges on Masterchef. Our server was lovely and friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Easily. One of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. I would put this up there with the forestside, Gilpin and the stamp house in Ambleside. Ordered the steak tartare and to round it off the sirloin sharing board (for two) just for me haha. My other half had the halibut This was honestly phenomenal!!! I will rush back. Staff are sooo sound as well. BLOODY LOVED IT ha

We're not especially fans of American cuisine but as Sticky Walnut were doing it for their set menu this month we decided to give it another chance and expand our taste. It's still not my favourite but the frickles (deep fried, very lightly tempura battered pickles), barbequed Boston beans, and fried chicken with collared greens were all raised to level well beyond the norm. Very unusually for me, the puddings were the standout course; New York cheesecake was delicious, and Honeycomb ice cream served in a chilled glass with cracking good solidified chocolate sauce, absolutely fantastic. Service was lovely, very friendly and charming. Excellent value, £23 each for all three courses. I don't think you can do better in Chester.

We had dinner at Stickey Walnut 20/1 after not having eaten there since last September. It was a lovely meal & the service absolutely outstanding. We will return in the near future. Shame they no longer do a Saturday morning breakfast but I can forgive this after last Tuesday's outstanding eating experience. Well done Stickey Walnut & happy 15th anniversary.

Popped in for a leisurely solo lunch last Friday as so rarely get to stop off in Chester. Was my first time here and was absolutely fantastic. The team were excellent. And the food..sublime. I didn’t have the set menu (which looked to be very good value!) as wanted to try more dishes and have some wine - of it was worth it. The sticky bacon - 10/10. The schnitzel 10/10. The coconut ice cream 10/10

I visited SW with 2 girlfriends this week. They have a new Chef - Luke and a new menu. The best restaurant meal I have had in Chester it was delicious. Great menu - I started with steak tartare followed by the monkfish in lobster sauce. All beautifully prepared and presented the flavours were perfection. The staff were wonderful. Attentive without being intrusive. We had a fantastic evening. Would highly recommend.

Located in a lovely suburb of Chester. Greeted by a friendly waitress where we were seated in a quiet corner. Short bistro menu with a good variety of options. Decent wine selection at reasonable prices. Open kitchen with engaging colleagues. We started with the Crab fishcake and goats cheese salad. The cheese was on a sweet crumbly base. The crab cake had a red fish sauce garnished with chilli oil. Perfect starters. For mains, we both had Seabream with poached mussels in a tarragon sauce. We added carrots and chips. The fish was exceptional, filleted, and delicious. For wine, we chose a French Shiraz, red is always our preference even with fish. Great atmosphere with nice background music and very comfortable seating. Overall, we would rate this restaurant one of the best in Chester fair price for the quality of food and service. Thank you for such a lovely evening.

We always enjoy the food here, tasty with a delicious twist. Lunchtime menu was top notch as a birthday treat. A mistake was made with the bill, charged fir evening 2 courses instead of Lunchtime charge. However this was soon rectified when we rang to explain. Lovely staff, excellent atmosphere of casual smart

The lunchtime Bistro Menu which changes on a monthly basis is such value for money for high end dining. Choose between 2 or 3 courses - prior booking not always necessary. Allow yourself at least a good hour.

Had an amazing lunch, warm atmosphere, felt comfortable and clean. Great service and a very, very reasonably priced lunch considering the quality of ingredients and cooking. Would highly recommend and definitely visit again when back in the area.

One of the best restaurants in Chester for a special meal for two. Highly recommended 👌 . Its also worth checking out their bakery, "Usher's Bakehouse" around the corner too if you're out early enough before it all sells out

Excellent evening once again! Menu changes regularly and there ate often different specials too. We enjoyed 3 delicious different courses each - perfect treat for a Saturday night. Will hopefully be back again soon.

Absolutely phenomenal! We got the pigs cheek, rarebit on brioche, duck confit and venison for mains and the chocolate oblivion and stick toffee for dessert. Every single course was absolutely incredible!

My first time here after wanting to go for years and boy was it worth the wait. We chanced a visit at lunch time for my birthday treat. We had the 3 course lunch (£40 or 2 courses for £35). The sharing sirloin steak was an additional £30. It was such high quality and they didn't scrimp on portion sizes either 👍. My dog even benefitted with the bone 🍖😁.

Outstanding food, this meal has topped anything I’ve had anywhere! Cannot believe we have only just discovered it when this is so close to home! Couldn’t choose a favourite dish from tonight because each one was perfect! Thank you for a great night! Now my new favourite place and will have to bring my family and friends back here so they can experience it too!

Wow!! A few years between this visit and my last and we absolutely loved it. People lovely, service fab and food outstanding (apologies if my photos don’t do it justice). Simply wow, and also recommend the wine pairing it definitely enhanced the experience.

A gem of a find during our 2 night stay in Chester. I booked it a month ago after reading reviews. Delighted to have celebrated our wedding anniversary here Both menus are really good. I had the 3 course bistro menu ( red Thai fish cake, sticky chicken thighs and honeycomb ice cream,) my husband had the a la carte.(lamb rump and baked yoghurt) Definitely worth a visit if you like good food and service!

Superb lunch. Every element was well cooked and well presented. Spending around £100 on lunch (inc. a small glass of wine each) feels a bit indulgent but every mouthful was delicious and you are really being treated to something special / so indulge yourself. Second visit here. We had dinner a couple of years ago. I won’t leave it that long again. We had pate/halibut and Thai fish cake/steak frites along with honeycomb ice cream. I’d recommend everything!

Always delish and a delight! Our starters were really great. If I ordered again I'd definitely go for the belly bacon over the sea trout. The latter was very nice but the bacon was next level. We had the ham hock to share for our main, which fell off the bone and had plenty of parsley sauce. Very nice wines by the glass too.

Great service and nice staff. The food was very good, the chicken liver paté was amazing. Nice portion sizes and fair prices

We had a great experience from start to finish ! The service was great and the food was fantastic . We could see the chefs hard at work from our table. Went for our 5 year anniversary and had a brilliant time .

We were invited to this gem of a restaurant for dinner and loved everything about it. A really interesting and varied menu, and I would happily have chosen each dish ordered around our table (unusual for me). Not a large place - some seating upstairs I understand so was glad to have booked. The service made the evening - attentive, helpful but not too fussy. Thanks so much all of you, we'll be back.

We went on Christmas eve for dinner and was a lovely meal from start to finish. The celeriac dish was sublime and beautifully presented. Fresh mackerel to start and honeycomb ice cream to end. Good friendly service altogether a great way to start Christmas.

S

Great restaurant with very friendly service. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was great. The best part was the dessert - a choux bun. I’m not normally a fan of fruit with chocolate, but the marmalade a cream went so well! It is quite expensive - £8 for pate seems a bit unnecessary. It was also the only disappointing part of our meal - a slice of pate with a wedge of bread - just didn’t justify the £8 fee. Will come back again!

Fabulous food and service. Everything tasted wonderful. But it was the extra touches... the 'happy anniversary' and the 'do you I require a taxi?' not expected, but very welcome ... lovely evening, and can't wait to return. Thank you 😊

A cosy, unique restaurant where the food is outstanding yet reasonably priced and the staff are so friendly and accommodating.

Just amazing food and knowledgeable staff. Abs a delightful space. Bold food combinations that stay close to the love of food. Could so easily have fallen into quite a few pretentiousness traps. But sailed well clear of those.

This was our first time here- but definitely not our last. Food was absolutely amazing- Atmosphere very relaxed. Special mention to Izzy who looked after us.

The food remains consistent and good, but portions remain small; the price point may be higher than expected because sides are necessary. The bistro menu offers reasonable value.

Very good local restaurant. Well worth a visit & recommended. Chicken schnitzel & sea bream for us.

Truffle parmesan wedges are a MUST have. Best wedges I've had in my life and internationally so far . Order as a side if not included in meal. Starter portion a bit tiny. Mackerel was fresh and perfectly done. Not dry or overdone . Braised featherback could be softer but it is delicious and the sauce is rich !

My wife and I booked the Valentine's Day meal, which was £69 per person, plus drinks. Although we received good service and the food was delicious, the meagre portion sizes left us disappointed. By the time we had consumed the "snack", starter and main, we were considering stopping off for something to eat on the way home, as we were still so hungry! The beef Wellington was advertised as "for two to share" which implied that it was quite substantial. Instead, it was served as two tiny individual portions, there was nothing "to share" about it. It wasn't even served with a potato dish, with the explanation that "the pastry is very rich" which was nonsense. Annoyingly, one of the servings was significantly smaller than the other; an observation which my wife also overhead another table commenting on to their waitress. The dessert was the only course that was reasonably portioned. As the other courses were so small, we got through everything rather quickly. My wife had visited the restaurant previously with a friend and had a lovely meal, so wanted to share the experience with me. Instead, we left feeling that we had been conned and won't be returning.

Me and the Mrs found this place a bit meh to be honest. Cold red wine served with food with average taste. Resorted to warming the wine on the radiator as the waitor wasn't interested in resolving. Service could have been more attentive too. For the price, we were pretty disappointed. Perhaps we were just unlucky that night.

L

Great wine list and decently priced menu. Inventive cooking with very interesting elements, not done as well as it could be but very decent. Their signature beef dish was good - flakey meat and lovely sauce but very dry still. The spinach and potato cake lacked flavor and, again, was dry and heavy in texture. Tomato miso salad was well seasoned and the cardamom doughnuts were light and interesting. Mains are £11, sides £3, starters and desserts £5. Service, however, is painfully slow but polite.

We visited Sticky Walnut last night after hearing great things about it from several people. The restaurant has a strong reputation, so we were really looking forward to the meal. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t quite live up to expectations. The menu had just changed and was quite limited. For our main, we had little choice but to order the double steak for two — not ideal since my partner prefers rare and I like medium. The steak arrived cooked somewhere in between, but it was on the small side and definitely not enough for two people. The potatoes were under-seasoned and rather dry, and while the salad looked pretty and fresh, it felt more like a garnish than a proper side. For starters, we had the bread and butter, but the butter was simply smeared on the side of the plate and the presentation was disappointing for a restaurant with this kind of reputation. Service was mixed — it took about 15 minutes before we were served, though once Camilla came over, she was lovely and chased up our drinks promptly. The wine was on the expensive side but unfortunately not the best quality. We did raise our concerns, and to their credit, the staff were understanding. They offered complimentary drinks, which was appreciated and did make us feel better. However, even after the discount, the total came to around £100, and we still left hungry — we actually stopped for McDonald’s on the way home. Overall, while the service was friendly and they tried to make things right, the food and value for money just didn’t match the high expectations or the reputation

After hearing good things from locals and seeing the good reviews online we had high hopes for this place, but honestly we were very disappointed. The only positive was the service, staff were attentive and friendly. The atmosphere on the other hand reminded me of somewhere that you may go for breakfast. It didn't have that upmarket intimate feel that you would expect when paying the type of prices that this restaurant commands. Upstairs was hot, cramped, and poorly lit. The toilets were like something you would find at a takeaway - tiny, old, badly decorated. Remember this places charges you £50 per head and £52 for a bottle of average Malbec. Let's be real here. The food was mediocre at best. We had the braised pig cheek to start, the meat was dry, hard, about the size of my thumb and the sauce lacked any depth of flavour you expect with this type of slow cooked dish. I went into my second course hungry and disappointed. The venison (two ways) turned up well presented but in a bowl. Why? Completely the wrong type of plate for this dish. This dish had a very well cooked piece of meat some celeriac puree, smoked bacon a roasted onion and a venison sausage (dry). It was ok and an improvement from the starter but again nothing that wowed me or left me longing for more. Lastly the desert with was a thimble full of ice cream, chocolate sauce and a huge piece of honey comb balanced on the top. A confused dessert that seemed like an after thought by the pastry chef. I wanted this place to shine but it was such a disappointment.

We ordered the sirloin with two starters and although it was cooked to the requested doneness, the overall quality was disappointing. The steak lacked flavor and tenderness, and the sides didn’t taste fresh or well-seasoned. Unfortunately, the meal didn’t meet expectations.

M

Very poor experience unfortunately. Food is great. Service was slow and the experience was poor. We were moved after being settled from a nice warm room, to a cold upstairs table with no atmosphere. Nice staff but need better planning needed.

My partner and I booked here for the Valentine's set meal for an eye-watering £75 per person (!) and we felt utterly conned. We had the duck spring roll and the soup for starter, which were both fine but tiny in portion size. For the main, we shared the châteaubriand steak, with some broccoli stems and fries. Again, this was just okay and a big let down as the apparent main focus of the meal, but there simply wasn't enough to share. The dessert was exceptionally awful. We ordered the fig cake and the passionfruit pastry, both of which were disgusting. The fig cake was topped with camembert, a choice that simply didn't work. Both desserts had a couple of very reluctant bites before being pushed aside. The stand out of the evening was the fries, which aren't exactly difficult to mess up. The place also lacked any atmosphere, and we left still feeling hungry. However, the service and members of staff were absolutely fantastic and looked after us very well for the evening. They are a true asset to Sticky Walnut.

Ema Linaker

If you want to pay 45 pounds a head for an average sirloin steak this is the place to be! Frankly the lunch menu is misleading and sadly the staff don't get what the problem is when in Hoole you charge a premium for a pub quality piece of meat
