We had an amazing dinner at Sushi-san! The Snack-O and Crazy Shrimp Tempura were absolutely incredible — perfectly crispy, beautifully balanced flavors, and the sauces were spot on. The tempura shrimp was tender inside and perfectly crunchy outside — easily one of the best rolls I’ve had. The Banana Milk Punch and Yuzu Margarita were also outstanding — well-balanced, not overly sweet, and very flavorful. The cocktails paired beautifully with the food. Great atmosphere and attentive service. We will definitely be back!
Oh my gosh! This place was absolutely amazing. The hostess was kind. We were quickly sat at a countertop. We had made reservations via OpenTable and this was fantastic. We got edamame from the happy hour menu and two drinks. We got sake, one hot and one cold. It was absolutely amazing. We had a variety of sushi and each one was better than the last absolutely amazing definitely will be going back. Also the service was top-tier
Sushi San understood the assignment. We went all in and every single bite delivered. Waygu crispy rice that should honestly come with a warning label. Seaweed salad fresh and bright. Spicy tuna and spicy scallops that actually bring the heat. And the beef n bop? Savory, rich, and exactly what you want when you think you’re “just getting sushi” and end up ordering everything. Washed it all down with an ice-cold Asahi because balance matters. And Michelle… Michelle was everything you want in a server. Attentive without hovering, fun without forcing it, and just the right energy to keep the table vibing. She made a great dinner feel like an event. If you’re in the area and debating, stop debating. Go hungry.
This was my first time at Sushi-san, and I had a great experience. For appetizers, I really enjoyed the Tako Taco and Saba noodles. The spicy scallop maki had a rich, well-balanced umami flavor. For dessert, I loved the nama chocolate—the presentation was very cute, with the chocolate served on charcoal, which made it even more special.
We were at Sushi San two years ago and on our foodie trip to Chicago, wanted to repeat. Everywhere else is a first but we HAD TO GO BACK! We bright 5 friends that aren't into sushi and certainly not raw fish. They both enjoyed the Hamachi and Blue Fin Tuna with us. Sushi San was even better than last time. They are less about the crazy look and sauces and serve more traditional sushi with the best taste.
I went during restaurant week and it was a top tier experience. The miso hamachi sushi roll was so fresh, it was honestly the best sushi I've had ever. I was a bit nervous to try the beef gyudon as it had a raw egg cracked on top but the dish itself was still sizzling hot and the egg cooked through as I mixed the ingredients around. Presentation was amazing and all the staff was very kind and attentive, especially the bartender Max! Would definitely recommend this spot for any sushi lovers.
Visiting here from Texas, and this is one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. We showed up with no reservation and sat at the bar, where Francis attended to us. Aside from the food being fantastic, Francis was an absolute champion. He not only provided a fantastic service, but he also educated us on the food and drink we had. If you want to indulge, try the akami, otoro, and chutoro. They are absolutely amazing and just melt in your mouth.
Super yummy lunch special! The special included both miso soup and salad, nice ways to open the palette. It was nice to have a little variety with the sashimi, nigiri, and maki. The rice was cooked fine, but seasoned nicely, and the fish was fresh! Service was speedy and attentive. FYI, a lot of the seating lacks lumbar support. Can’t wait to come back!
Incredible! Would travel to come here. Some of the best quality sushi I have had. The side dishes were very flavouful as well. Highly recommend.
I decided to try this place after seeing the incredible reviews on Google, and it definitely lived up to the hype! I was warmly welcomed by the receptionist and seated promptly. At the bar, I was served by John (an Asian gentleman), who made me feel genuinely welcome and even offered some thoughtful recommendations, which was a lovely touch. The waiter also took the time to walk me through each dish as it arrived, which I really appreciated. I’m super happy with my first experience of modern Javanese fusion cuisine here – it was fantastic. Highly recommend! 🍣 🍱 😃 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Had an amazing experience at Sushi-San! The Beef ’n Bop Sizzling Rice came out hot and perfectly crispy , the meat tasted great , easily one of the best sizzling dishes I’ve had in Chicago. The Spicy Tuna, Sesame Salmon, and Yuzu Yellowtail maki rolls were all fresh and well-balanced, with the Yuzu Yellowtail standing out for its bright citrus flavor. Service was friendly, quick, and attentive even though the place was busy. The vibe is upbeat and lively perfect for dinner with friends or coworkers. Definitely good quality, I’ll be coming back for sure
Great service, food, and atmosphere. 5 rolls for $10 or 10 for $20 (give or take, depending on what you get) at a highly-rated restaurant in river north is not bad at all! i got the spicy salmon and sesame salmon roll and they were at least an 8/10 each! the best thing we got were the chicken nuggets, easily a 9/10 and a 9.5/10 with the lime they give you. also, shoutout to the young woman with the curly hair and a bun, she was very nice and attentive to us!
Amazing fresh sushi. Visiting town and found this place based on Google review and I wanted contribute it, highly recommend it. You won’t be disappointed. We got 4 rolls of sushi and every single one of them were amazing!!! Service was very fast and personable.
Enjoyed some exquisite food with my son here last night. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious, but we especially loved the Miso Salmon and the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice dishes
This one of me and my girlfriends date night spots. The food here has great flavor. The shrimp tempura and the crispy chicken app. Get order 100% every time we go.The crispy avocado roll is are main sushi roll we have. All in can't go wrong coming here.
BEST SUSHI IN CHICAGO. I’ve had sushi from alllll over the world and Sushi-San, it was yabai delicious. I pigged out. I got drunk. And it was only lunch time. Each nigiri is made w precision and executed meticulously and visually perfected. I’ve had not had such amazing sushi in quite some time. The BEST.
If in Chicago and you want sushi, visit this place. Last minute decision, place was slammed on a Tuesday night, so make reservations. I got lucky and sat at the bar, but the wait was 1.5 hours at 630. App was good, Tako taco. Followed by Otoro Otoro Nigiri, was tremendous. I have had this at other places and this was one of the best. Also had a yellow tail roll, Mexican roll, lobster roll and spicy tuna, all were fresh and very good. Service was great, also had very good Japanese whiskey, recommendation from the bar tender. I will visit again without a doubt.
I had the best crispy wagyu beef. I strongly recommend this for your lunch if you’re not a sushi fan, but the Sushi-San also has very tasty sushi options as well. Tuna quality was great, and reminded me of tuna nigiri I had at the Japanese restaurant in Hawaii. Worth to try this place if you’re looking for a Japanese restaurant in Chicago.
this is single handedly the best sushi restaurant i’ve been to in a long time. they have their flavor profiles down to a CAPITAL T and you can’t go wrong ordering a single thing on the menu. our server chris was patient and accommodating and helped make recommendations for our sushi. could not love this place more, this is the shizzzzzz 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Is spectacular anniversary date! Was gifted complementary sake (yuzu. SO GOOD.) shots and chocolate. With the FRESHEST fish money can buy. highly recommend the snack-o sushi roll. It does not play.
Amazing service and food! We had a reservation and they were running a little behind. The manager brought us sushi to eat while we waited because i said i was starving so we might leave. Such a polite person. That one comment prompted food instantly! I will definitely be returning
Our bartender was amazing. Great personality, knew the food and the drinks in detail to provide perfect recommendations. I loved being at the bar and watching the sushi chefs craft roll after roll. I will be back. (Also shout out to their 90s/00s hip hop playlist- which I was told is on Spotify as Sushi San)
We went in for happy hours on a Friday. The happy hour items are amazing for the price. We ordered every item on it and enjoyed all of them.
Great service, and the place looked nice. I loved the food, the sashimi was fresh, and the sushi rice had great taste. I will definitely come back.
Sat at the bar for lunch and was taken care of by Max who did a great job. Loved the yuzu margarita and paper junglebird. Sushi and appetizers (Brussels sprouts and San salad) was 10/10. Highly recommend whether you’re just visiting or a Chicagoan
The vibes are VIBING at Sushi-san! Incredible sushi, great atmosphere and seamless service. I loved being able to use the QR code to pay for our bill. I would get a reservation but there are tons of tables with an efficient wait staff and impeccable sushi chefs so it’s worth the wait if you can’t grab a resy. We loved trying the Nigiri deluxe to get as may chef curated fresh fish options as possible! I’ll never get over the mouth feel of that nigiri 🍣
The fish tasted very fresh - the salmon avo hand roll, snack-o roll, spicy salmon roll, spicy tuna crispy rice, and the matcha oreo ice cream were all delicious. Good ambiance as well.
I visited Sushi San for the first time during my trip back to Chicago after 12 years — and I couldn’t have picked a better place to start. Everything about this restaurant was absolutely amazing. The food was incredibly fresh and flavorful, beautifully prepared, and presented with care. Every dish felt like a work of art. What truly stood out, though, was the service. The staff were warm, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome from the moment we walked in. They struck the perfect balance between being friendly and professional. Sushi San turned out to be one of the highlights of my return to the city. I’ll definitely be back — and I won’t wait another 12 years next time.
Wow, what an amazing experience. The service is so friendly and they’re so knowledgeable. The drinks are cold and delicious. You can get a simple super cold beer, some delicious sake or a well crafted cocktail. The sushi is some of the best in the United States. They are able to buy their fish so fresh and it really shows. I asked for something not on the menu and they were happy to make it for me. If I could rate it 10 out of 5 stars I would. Don’t walk, run to sushi-San. Ask for Adrian and Romelo. You can thank me later.
I love this restaurant to come and enjoy excellent sushi 🍱 it’s always full so I recommend you make a reservation so you don’t have to wait all the staff is very polite and helpful whenever I go they give me the best attention I love sushi 🍣 I have come several times the first time it was without an appointment and in 5 minutes they assisted me with a table and gave me excellent service I really enjoy the place, I love the cleanliness, the colors of the place I love everything, the place is always full and if everyone speaks in a low voice it is normal if you want there are not many people go one day during the week and early because almost always in the afternoon at night it is full If you want to pay from your comfort they have a QR service at the table where you only scan vi. Your mobile camera and you can already pay I always choose this option is the most comfortable for me If you want some delicious sushi you should come here you will love it
Great quality food and drinks! We’ve ordered from here several times, but the in-person experience can’t be beat. Food is served quickly, so it’s easy to add more items if you didn’t order enough the first time.
Great restaurant. Delicious and fresh sushi! A+ Nice ambiance and excellent customer service.
Hey sushi lovers! This place is a must-visit for a delicious sushi experience and a great time with friends or family. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the music selection is top-notch. I was also impressed with the service, which was very easy to navigate. Overall, I highly recommend this place.
I had an excellent experience at Sushi San. The quality of the sushi was unbeatable, with fresh ingredients and authentic flavors. The service was very attentive and the atmosphere welcoming. Without a doubt, a visit that is worthwhile and that I will repeat. “very easy payment system
I’m from out of town, but every time I’m in Chicago, I’ll try to stop by Sushi-San because not only is the food flavourful, bold, and consistently good, the overall vibes are fun! The restaurant is always packed, but the bar is first come first serve. Also super easy to pay your bill (or split the bill) with their QR system. My favourites: any of their crispy rice bites, yellowtail anything, crispy seaweed tacos
Took a trip down as I was craving for some good Japanese. Food was beyond good.. it was great! Sashimi is fresh and the miso soup flavorful. But the sizzling rice was the true winner!! It's a definite must order.
The sake was perfect, the nigiri was perfect, the sushi was PERFECT! And the delicious little chocolate squares were absolutely mouthwatering memorable. It has been a long time since ive had sushi this fresh and well made.
I have eaten here twice for their lunch sets and it’s so delicious and such a good deal. The more recent time I’ve gone, you get to pick any three items from the express lunch options. Everything I’ve had here is super flavorful. The food here is amazing, as is the sake selection.
Sushi was fresh and delicious, upgrading simple classic rolls. Highly recommend the beef n bap sizzling rice! It’s one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. Service was great even though it was packed when we arrived.
Great spot for amazing sushi. I was terrible with taking photos, but added two for you all. The sushi was fresh, tasty and had perfect presentation. Our server was amazing. Enjoyable experience, we would return anytime! Otoro is a must, don’t miss out!
Had an amazing experience at Sushi-San. From the moment we walked in, the energy was vibrant but still intimate enough for a date night or small group dinner. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the food? Top tier. The sushi was incredibly fresh the nigiri practically melted in my mouth. The specialty rolls were creative without doing too much, and the crispy rice bites were a standout. You can tell they care about quality and presentation. Definitely a spot I’ll keep in rotation. Great atmosphere, great music, and even better sushi.
Fiancé and I visited to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. Atmosphere was lovely, and nice without feeling too fancy for us to be there. Everything we ate was so high quality and after each first bite we ended up saying “That’s the best ____ I’ve ever had.” For everything. Service was impeccable. Multiple staff congratulated our anniversary and brought us our dessert with little candles. We never had empty plates on our table for long and always had fresh water. Our server, Grant, was amazing. I had silly questions and requests and Grant was fun, respectful, and always helpful. Grant checked in on us without being overwhelming (and never when our mouths were full haha!) Loved it here and worth the 4 hour drive!
This is an exceptional location for sushi and Asian fare. The bar service by Eli and his colleagues was great! I had two DELICIOUS whiskey sours with egg-whites (highly recommend!) and the wagyu tartare, followed by the D-Luxe nigiri special. Very fresh and filling. I capped off the night with the Nama chocolate which was yummy as well. Great atmosphere, somewhat crowded, good service. Will be back and highly recommend!
Eggplant tempura was amazing!!! Atmosphere is amazing! The seats are what are uncomfortable, Sat at the high top don’t recommend if you’re short. Wagyu tartare with the crunchy rice was a little bit too hard to eat.
I really enjoyed the cucumber salad & edamame. The miso soup was warm and comforting & sushi rolls tasted fresh.
Crispy rice spicy tuna was amazing, but the rolls were not as much. We tried the eel, both the salmon options, and the tempura shrimp. Maybe it is because it wasn’t our taste, because i could tell the ingredients were good quality and fresh.
The sushi was amazing but the specials are not really worth it. Make sure to see the pictures before ordering. I had spicy salmon and sesame salmon and they were great. Ribs and corns were not anything special. The seaweed salad was bland.
Not great customer service. Interactions were limited, and all payment was done online. There was also about 25$ taken from taxes and a surcharge, which I haven’t usually seen. The food itself was delicious, although I wouldn’t spend that much for sushi again. Would recommend, just be prepared for the service and pricing.
Service here was excellent. Drinks - excellent. The food was alright considering the price point it's at. Wagyu crispy rice - rice was cold and too hard 4/10 Mega box - the yellow tail was fresh and tender 8/10. The bluefin tuna had a really tough piece of sinew running through the middle of the sashimi, made it quite unpleasant to eat 5.5/10
Sushi-san has great drinks and wonderful hospitality but the actual fish was lacking, given the price. We got the mega set, wagyu tartare, and 4 combo handroll. The yellowtail was the best cut of fish hands down. If every fish was of that quality, the meal would have been 5 stars. The bluefin torro had a thick sinew that was very unpleasant and not chewable. The other fish were fine but for the price was lacking. The sushi rice was also quite salty and chewy. So overall disappointed by the fish (due to the price) but they do have really great drinks and our waitress was super sweet.
