I was surprised of the good flavors of 2 different entrees we had. Not like the usual food from other Mexican Restaurants. Atmosphere was nice and parking on street or in the back. Full bar available.

Visited California for the first time on a business trip and only had 2 days to experience it. I happened to stubble upon El Cholo’s and I’m SO glad I did! I felt like I had the full Californian experience; sunny patio with exotic flowers, authentic Mexican food, and the best margarita I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is 10/10. They also give you free pralines at the end of your visit. Hope to come back one day!

Just had lunch on the patio with my family! Food was amazing and the portions were huge! The pitcher of Sangria is will worth the price, we got 6 glasses from it. Our waiter, Hector, was outstanding! Super friendly, efficient and funny! Highly recommend this place!

B

Food was great and the selection was plentiful. The history of the place was expressed by including when dishes were first added to the menu which was interesting and a topic of discussion among my friends. The staff was really good and everything was brought out quickly. The chip were very good. The women’s restroom had the most amazing faucets I have ever seen. I don’t know if the men’s room have the same one but it’s worth finding the restroom just to see them.

Unbelievable. Top 5 on my list of amazing eats. I had the fish tacos, oh so good! The two waiters were so attentive and nice. We went during lunch around 2pm. My mom and sister loved their plates as well. Beautiful ambience and fair prices. Will be back again!

Went in for dinner after around 530pm or so. They have a great and inexpensive happy hour as well. $7 for 3 street tacos, pretty tasty, not bad at all. The chips and salsa come with a written warning on the tables card holder that is very true. The chips and salsa are so good you cant stop eating them. The salsa is amazing not too chunky and not to thin and watery, its just right to consume until you ruin your appetite.

Phenomenal meal there again today. Best Mexican food in So Cal or perhaps anywhere. Had the Mexican chopped salad and it was delicious, had an abundance of delicious veggies. I added grilled chicken, so fresh and good. It's enough food for 2-3, took at least half home. Must also mention the guacamole, made at your table side and seasoned to your taste with bottomless basket of chips. The service is outstanding, too. 10+++

We’re from out of town visiting and on a random drive I saw this place for a split second and said “i bet that place is good”. The next night we ordered takeout, WOW! Some of the best Mexican food out there. You can tell they have NAILED their recipes. I got the Santa Barbara Enchilada and my husband got the chicken chimichangas. Both super delicious and very authentic. Would highly recommend!!

Dined here last night for the first time and the food and drinks were amazing. So was the service🤩. I had the Blue Corn Enchiladas 👌👌👌👌 and Strawberry Margaritas! The staff was so pleasant and accommodating. So happy to support this local small business restaurant!

Best Mexican restaurant I've been to in years. Originally from Texas. Miss that food. Moved to Arizona, haven't found any Mexican food I like there yet. Visiting here for vacation, fell in love with the music, ambiance and food. Our waiter was phenomenal. Highly recommend this place. Food and drinks were just amazing. Chips and salsa were so yummy.

I choked on a chip here a couple years ago because I was eating too fast and so I went to the the ER to get the chip removed from me and thanks to that procedure; doctors happened to find a malignant lesion in my throat at an early stage. So this place sorta indirectly saved my life ⭐️ Also great food and service

El Cholo is a true gem in the world of Mexican cuisine, delivering an authentic and traditional dining experience that has stood the test of time since 1923. With multiple locations across Southern California and a newer outpost in Salt Lake City, El Cholo consistently serves up a menu rooted in family recipes from the Mexican state of Sonora. Dishes like the Sonora-style enchiladas, layered with corn tortillas, simmered chicken, salsa roja, salsa verde, and a fried egg, or (my favorite vegetarian) iconic green corn tamales, showcase the rich, authentic flavors that transport you straight to Mexico. Their commitment to fresh ingredients—think handmade tortillas, tableside guacamole, and sizzling fajitas with perfectly seasoned meats—elevates every bite. The warm, inviting atmosphere, paired with their famous margaritas and an impressive selection of over 150 tequilas at some locations, makes El Cholo a go-to for both casual meals and special occasions. From the historic Western Avenue location in Los Angeles to the newer spots like Corona Del Mar, every El Cholo delivers the same high-quality, authentic Mexican experience. Highly recommend for anyone craving a true taste of Mexico

I been in this place many times with friends and family. The food is great and service is excellent. Everyone is so nice that you want to go there again. I specifically like the outdoor sitting area. I only have one comment, there is a quotation from Ernest Hemingway on the wall about love and fish that I could not locate in any of my searches.

Service was amazing, the owner or manager was very nice, the restaurant was a good size with lots of seating options and decor to look at, we did not have a reservation, but they still took us right away, it was calm just as soon as we sat and got drinks it started to pick up but service was still amazing, I had the filet mignon fajitas, meat and veggies were all very flavorful, my party all enjoyed what they ordered, no complaints anywhere here. If we are back in the area we definitely will be back to try more of the menu. And they ended our dinner with a birthday flan for our friend.

We've only been there twice, once for takeout and another to eat inside the restaurant although they have plenty of seating outside. Our favorite is their green corn tamale! I like that they are very accommodating when ordering! They let you substitute items or add your choice of protein. And they were excellent with our takeout order. The woman taking my order did a great job. The food came out correctly and quickly.

Excellent meal Togo this evening ! Steak Fajitas very tender with a wonderful mix of tender veggies. The Sonoran enchilada is our new favorite item(thank you Brad Johnson for the recommendation) Perfectly prepared and the fried egg even survived the Togo delivery in perfect condition. Green Tamale was good. Tortilla soup was thick and highly recommended. Southwestern chicken Tostada was another winner. The green dressing was excellent. The Server/hostess that took our phone order was great. Repeated the order back to us. Didn’t miss anything including the extra flour tortillas for the Fajitas. 5 stars across the board !!!

Amazing all around! Edwin, Renee and their wonderful staff were the perfect pick! We are from Utah but my son and our new daughter-in-law decided on a wedding in the Newport Beach area. We had a large group to feed for a the groom’s dinner and El Cholo in Corona Del Mar did not disappoint! Edwin and Renee made the experience of planning and coordinating a dinner from afar seem easy! Thank you making it a magical night! If you are in the Newport Beach area make El Cholo your next place to eat! The best Mexican fine dining area around! My favorite is the Enchiladas Suiza or their Molé! Muchísimas Gracias!!

We usually stop here after a day at the beach. This time we went to Corona del Mar Beach with the parking lot right there at the sand. The restaurant was busy so im glad we called for a reservation ahead of time. Food was delicious & the margaritas we good, too. We ordered a burrito, and 2 Santa Barbara Enchiladas: shrimp, chicken, mushrooms, yum! Delicioso!!! I asked for cilantro rice & black beans. We each took leftovers home. They were even good warmed up for dinner the next day.

This is by far the best Mexican food we have ever eaten, as in, my husband has always hated Mexican food but this place has converted him and he already wants to go back!! They had a menu full of unique dishes we've never seen before, and everything was full of flavor and prepared beautifully. Would definitely recommend and will be visiting again.

Enjoyed the food, but not all the guests in our party liked their entree. The custom made guacamole is nice and wasn't spicy (even though we asked for it that way). The avocados shops have been refrigerated - room temperature guacamole doesn't taste the same as chilled.

After moving away from California some things become clear: we missed El Cholo’s Mexican food the most when we remembered our favorite Mexican food eateries. Great food and this location has outdoor seating like your in your friend’s relaxing patio area with cushioned benches and bright pillows. Highly recommend.

I think the night we went the service was slow because our area had a few parties. Overall the food and atmosphere were 5 stars all the way! Fantastic food! Some people might be confused by the Sonoran style enchiladas, but you should definitely get them!

The restaurant stood out for its remarkable combination of excellent food, atmosphere, and service. Staff members greeted guests warmly and continued to check in throughout the meal in a thoughtful way. The menu provided options that were appealing across a range of preferences. Food arrived quickly, with presentation that showed real care. Flavors were outstanding, with freshness in every bite. Drinks were served promptly and complemented the meals well. My favourite restaurant in the USA. Been west coast and east coast as a tourist - and this just was great. Lovely attention, lovely margaritas and genuineness service. My personal preference is to eat on the patio that faces the street. The interior dining seems small and uninteresting when compared to the patio's, vibrant landscaping, and colorful umbrellas. The menu is enticing albeit offering somewhat pricey fare. Having said that, this is not inexpensive fast food. the quality is great. Parking is easy with a lot behind the restaurant.

Great spot! Patio is vibrant and full of sun/shade spots. restaurant has a ton of history and and the LA location has been around for 100 years or so. Inside is lined with person pictures! We got the fish tacos and the el carbon. Both rice were delicious and the tacos were great. Large portions that are easily shareable. Margarita was okay, nothing special.

Ambiance: nice and clean, subtle, and family style design. Wasn't too busy but a nice atmosphere. Service: amazing service, quick and friendly. Had no complaints at all. Our server was knowledgeable about different tequilas and helpful with the decisions. Drinks: I just came for a few drinks and had a great time. Had a margarita and tequila on the side. Both were delicious!

We ate here, Friday night the 22nd. It’s a Terrific place. The food items, on the menu, have the dates they were first introduced. We had a fiesta platter which comes with chicken and crab taquitos, quesadillas and nachos underneath it all. I had the Sonoran Enchiladas, which comes with an egg on it. My daughter had the shrimp and chicken enchiladas and my wife had a Mexican salad. They were all prepared extremely well. We requested a hot salsa and they provided a dark Smokey flavored salsa that was outstanding. It was delicious yet so spicy it demanded we not use too much of it at once. The restaurant was very crowded but the service was excellent. The wait time for the meals was very brief and the waiter and busboy were very attentive. The prices were very reasonable for such high quality meals.

Stopped by for a light lunch and was really surprised how much we liked the food. The appetizer that we ordered had a little bit of everything so it gave me a good idea as to what the full plates would be like. The Chimichangas were the star though, crispy and juicy. I would highly recommend this place for breakfast lunch or dinner. Cheers

Great service and atmosphere. I got the enchilada mariscos (seafood - lobster, scallops, and shrimp) and my fiancé got the burrito with the rice on the side. My margarita was so good and it came with a little shot of patron too. The guac was nice and creamy, but lacked a little bit of flavor. Everything else was super tasty. The menus have the year of when each item was added to the menu. I loved that!

This is by far the best Mexican restaurant l have ever been too. It is a true dining experience, staff is amazing, very attentive, beautiful table setting. Our waiter Hector made us feel like royalties! Ceviche is a must have, super fresh. Guacamole side table service, yummy! Cheese tamales are out of this world... Fish tacos, chicken enchiladas... everything made here us top notch! Prices are a bargain for what you get.

Seated quickly, chips and guacamole on point, margarita also classic, burrito tasted a tiny bit burnt. The service was quick and the decor was festive, but the price was high for the food to be a bit off.

This place is friendly, festive, very open and lots of servers who help one another. The food is plentiful and though heavy with cheeses and can be oily, everything is very tasty and exactly what you'd want in a Mexican restaurant. We would highly recommend this for a fun family/friends brunch. Seating outside is great and well-shaded; in perfect weather, you can't beat it!

Stopped in for a drink and ended up getting the Mother's Day special. Good value overall since it came with the mini bottle of bubbly.

J

The tableside guacamole was good. My husband ordered the filet mignon fajitas unfortunately the smell did not match the flavor (or lack thereof). The meat was dry and mushy at the same time. The flavor was like cast iron and rotting meat. The other person in my party ordered the mahi mahi fish tacos and they were NOT mahi mahi but instead a fishy, flakey, white fish that was possibly bass or cod.

L
Lorie Sandza

Place has been in business for 100 yrs. That is pretty impressive. However, for me I did not care for the food. Found everything a little bland and lacking depth. We tried a few different dishes and it’s just not for us. However, the place is very popular and has a few locations. if you don’t like things too spicy and milder flavors, try it out.

Lisa Christ

Really cool super old style Mexican restaurant. We were seated in a booth in the late afternoon. The history in this location was really interesting. Lots of old pictures of the past 100 years+ in business on the walls. I ordered a combo plate and the chili rellano was small and round. I guess I am used to a full size poblano. Chicken taco was a corn tortilla, stuffed with shredded chicken and held together with a toothpick, deep fried. No lettuce, pico or cheese. It was delicious but I was kinda wanting the lettuce, tomato and pico. The Paloma was traditional and freshingly perfect. Price wes as expected for the area. I will come again.

The good: service was great- they were quickly on top of water and (complimentary) chips and salsa, and patiently spilt a check for our party of 4. It’s super cute and fun atmosphere. Heaters on the patio for the cooler nights. A couple of vegetarian options (though limited). Coconut margarita was out of this world! The bad: The food just wasn’t that good. My nachos were drowning in oil and cheese (and I LOVE cheese) with barely any beans or tomato salsa. My friend said her fish tacos were disappointing. The chips and salsa were ok. Wanted to love this place and couldn’t because of the food quality.

Mike D

It's not bad Mexican but it is also not Impressive. It's a great meal for the price. The ambiance is really nice and it feels like there's a lot of history in the building. My wife and I came for a quick lunch and they had a great lunch Special. Wasn't too crowded when we went. We'll probably stop by with friends but it's not on our radar otherwise

T

Was dining here for a birthday celebration. We were greeted promptly by the wait staff and the ambiance of the restaurant was great. Has a very traditional feel and lots of historical reference to the history of the company. This would be the only reason for any type of rating for the place. Our food took well over an acceptable time frame to be served. We eventually had to ask the server to check on our food. When the food did come out my tacos were cold. I informed the server of the issue and was told a new set was going to be made. The tacos that came out for the second round felt and tasted like they had been the original tacos zapped in the microwave. Will not be going back to this restaurant again.

J
Jocelyn S

Good food but took 20min for a server to take our order and only 1 other couple there. I left my jacket there and called and they said they'd keep it for me. I said it'd be a week or so when we'd get it. It was gone when we went to retrieve it! :( I gave my name and am upset. Disappointed overall!!

V

Ordered to go! Taquitos were soggy and like, slop, thru in the trash. Last chance that they get from me. Their food has been going down hill since Covid. DONE!

C
Christi Lott

The worst El Cholo we’ve ever dined at. We’ve eaten at the Western Ave and Santa Monica location many many times over the last 29 years and the food at the Newport Beach location is bland and nothing like the other locations. The chips were bad, salsa bland, the carne asada tacos were completely without seasoning or flavor. I told our server my tacos weren’t carne asada and he said, yes they are. LOL they are not. They are not following the recipes of the other locations. Don’t bother eating here unless you want flavorless food. There’s a reason why on a Saturday night the restaurant was only about a 1/4 full.

G
Getzemany Lopez

Not authentic Mexican Food. The service was alright. It took them 20 mins to take our order and another 30 to receive our food . My boyfriend got fish tacos and the guacamole was all black, lettuce super dried out and tasted like old turtle water. Overall very disappointed & definitely not coming back!!

D
Devery L.

This is not our first bad experience, but one that will make us not come back. My mom and I were going for lunch today. We were not communicated with that it's taking the kitchen over 30-45 minutes to get our orders. We waited, but after 40 minutes of no food, we wanted to just leave. Unfortunately, the waiter had our credit card and charged us for the food we didn't want at that point. I asked her just to charge the one drink we ordered (this is before she ran the card) since we hadn't received food but ended up getting our food in to go bags and being charged for the food we asked to remove from our bill. It wasted the only time we had. Extremely bad service has been ongoing here for a few visits, but this one was the worst service I've received in a restaurant. Will not be coming back and will ensure others know not to dine here. Very disappointed...

Such a disappointment! We chose this location to host our rehearsal dinner because our family friend and owner of the restaurant, Ron, have been close friends for 50 years. Unfortunately, our event was a complete disaster. The onsite Manager, EDWIN, was deceptive, rude and out right disrespectful to our party adding, "If you don't like it, you can leave!" The food service reflected the the Manager's awful attitude. The servers and Manager loitered outside of our space instead of providing service to our guest. Our drinks were watered down from sitting and our food was cold and sloppy. When guest take time to bring these issues to your attention, they are giving you the opportunity to make it right. The way you respond will have a decisive impact on the outcome. If you are looking to host an event at this location, I would strongly advise you to choose another location.

MY WIFE GOT CARNITAS BURRITO AND IT WAS ALSO WITH NO FLAVOR. I WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN. $70 DOWN THE DRAIN. NOT EVEN THE BEANS OR THE RICE HAD FLAVOR. VERY DISAPPOINTING.
